Hey, hey, hey, everybody. Welcome Back to episode 61 of Something Wrong with the Podcast. It's your boy, Julian. And if you are watching on YouTube, you may see a new background behind me and I have a really fun reason why. I'm recording live from Mexico City. Yes. My next two episodes will be from cdmx, which is pretty exciting. I'm posting up here for quite a while. I'm in a really cool spot, amazing neighborhood. If any of you are in Mexico City during this time, please reach out. I'd love to grab a drink. I'm continuing my solo travel for context. So if you recall, I did Paris and Barcelona and then I spent a couple months back home in New York, and now I'm back on the road live from Mexico City. Super happy to be here. So if you are listening to the audio, the audio may be a little different. I'm not using my professional podcast setup. I came out here just pure raw laptop, but I want to keep the pod going, especially with everything that's going on. We're going to get to Jay Z in a second, but this is a pretty setting, a nice background. We got some really nice, you know, plants, the, you know, south of the border aesthetic here, which I'm a big fan of. I landed, was starving, had two of the best tacos I've ever had in my life that were huge. They were loaded everything down to the corn tortilla was homemade and it cost me $3. So I will be eating like a king here and trying a bunch of amazing restaurants. I love those. Like, new top restaurants in North America recently came out and Mexico City has plenty of them on there. I think, like five of the top 10 are on there, which is pretty awesome. And I'm not too far from most of them, so I'm really happy to be here. Gonna, you know, get out walking again, get some workouts in, get some, get darker than I already am if you can't tell. I'm also growing my hair out, keeping the beard a little short. These days. But all right, nevertheless, let's get down to brass tacks. Couple things that are going to change the dynamic of this episode as well. I Because I'm doing all the recording itself on my laptop, I will be on my phone quite a bit just because I have the Jay Z freestyle lyrics on here and I'm going to be reading them. And I'll also in post, add the audio in here. But I can't do this live right now because again, I'm just working purely off my laptop. There is no other equipment with me other than a MacBook. So I'm telling you, I'm making it work, guys. I promise. As I alluded to Jay Z, Roots Picnic, he returned. His return to Roots Picnic is his first time performing in quite a while. I've had a great history at Roots Picnic. It truly was not was. It's Still Going is one of my favorite festivals. Traditionally, it was a festival that Rory and I would go down to every year. We would either drive down or take the train down, have a little like bro Bro day together. It was very fun. Hung out with a lot of artists, listen to some amazing music. It was always a great balance of old school with the. The tribute that Black Thought would do. Every year we get a nice taste of that pause. I remember one of the highlights we saw Chief Keef a few years ago. But then also you get, you know, you get a taste of the new school and R B as well. I remember watching Snow Allegra singing with Rory. So great memories, great festival. Obviously not aware if the team and those guys went down this year, but needless to say, this is one that I would have loved to have been at. Obviously I'm here and life has certainly changed since I've last gone to Roots Picnic, but it seemed like a great time. But without further ado, let's just jump into Jay Z. And this is an interesting time and I think position for Jay Z to return back to the microphone. Last we heard, Jay Z was in an interview with Frazier, Frazier Sharp, who's an incredible journalist. I'm a big fan of his style of journalism. I believe he's editor over at GQ now. I believe that interview was done via. Via gq. Via. Via. I don't know how I. It depends on the mood I'm in, which version of that word that I say. But during that interview, we got Jay in his stoicism, stoic ways, in his mature ways, where he went out and said, I'm not a big fan. The quote was more or Less the lines of I'm not a big fan of division and hip hop. I think it's played out, I think it's corny. I think we've moved past that as a genre and as, as a community. Right. And obviously he's referring mostly in the context of Kendrick and Drake and more so speaking to the fallout of that beef and how much it has fractured hip hop fans, hip hop media and just the industry as a whole. We seem to be a clear split. This isn't like we can all piece it up and go back to programming as usual. There seems to be a like in politics, a hard line in the sand. And if you feel one way, you are therefore alienating yourself from the other thing. Meaning if you enjoy Drake's new albums, therefore you have to hate Kendrick's work. And everything that Kendrick does, which we know as a listener base here, because I love how educated you all are as listeners, is just objectively not true. And it's just a really lazy and demeaning. It's a cheap way to avoid accountability in the middle ground and the give and take that comes with artistry and understanding the complexity of this beef. Right. But let's continue. Jay z does a 180 on this. So Mr. Let's piece it up. Let's not be divisive. Takes to the microphone and we're hearing an angry Jay Z. We're hearing a pressed like full court press, you know, who wants it. I'm dishing out this is Jay Z and we'll go through the disses. But he starts, he starts with, he comes at Tory Lanez, his father, Dame Dash, Kanye, Jaguar Wright, which I think is insane that he still mentions her. Drake obviously, which is the big one, Oskino and there's a couple others as well. Again, I have the lyrics up here. I'll go through all of them. But this is a Jay Z, honestly, in the same vein in which Drake has been positioning himself for the last two years. There's quite a parallel here, right? And let's go through what's happened to Jay Z since he's last rapped on a record. Jay Z has survived and was smattered and, you know, named in the Epstein files. His name got brought up and we saw him have to claw his way out of that with, with sharp statements posted on, you know, Roc Nation socials. Again, not hearing from him at all, just seeing those pieces go up. He did a long form piece, a long form sit down interview with the New York Times as well. That's the other like direct word of word from Jay Z's mouth content that we've gotten. But we haven't seen him in music, we haven't seen him on a stage in quite some time. And it's funny how the paradigm shift of his energy and attitude in those more structured sit down, long form editorialized interviews into when it's his time to communicate in him using his own platform, literally his own festival to get his message across. And his message is quite sharp and it's quite angry and it contradicts a lot of what he'd been saying up to this point. Right. So let's go through the lyrics here.

The verse starts and you can say right out the bat, he's pouncing on one of the biggest controversies obviously being the Epstein files. Had he's turning 100, if she would have transitioned before I cleared my name, I would have hunted him. Meaning Hattie is his maternal grandmother. Obviously some of these referenced tons of times during his career. Jay Z's relationship with Diddy was, was quite bad. And people were saying, you know, Jay Z's a big player in all these things, all these parties. And luckily, you know, Jay Z was able to clear his name and he said the thought of his grandmother passing before he cleared his name would have led him to a violent spree because it would have tarnished his name, his reputation and his goodwill with her. Right. So let's continue. I'm not going to read every line. I'm just going to read ones that kind of bring up certain people. That 1-800-ambulance chaser would have wish on wish would have wished on camera that him referring to Tony Busby who was the lawyer, if we remember the lawyer that was coming after Jay Z and filing the lawsuit against Jay Z during that time. Let's skip ahead. The rock's not crumbling. The leprechauns. The leprechauns have magically run out of pranks your son on a federal jail line mumbling something about having too much in his drink. We have a little annotation here. This is obviously in reference to Tory Lanez and also shot at his father. This next line is also shot at his father. He said, the rock's not crumbling. Remember when Tory Lanez father's like the rock will. Jay Z will fall. Roc Nation. You will crumb that joke. That became a great meme for quite a while. This is him directly saying, we're not crumbling or falling to anything. The next line is obviously reserved for Dame Dash. There's that famous video of Dame Dash talking directly to camera. His teeth fall out. It's during a live. The line is niggas teeth tumbling out they mouth. And somehow I am the one who done it. That's a murder mystery game. The Jay Z Dame Dash beef will just forever take on, you know, many forms. I'm kind of happy that they're still doing their things, to be honest. Well, let's continue. Here we go. Y' all trying to get under skin. I really got under skin. Ask Unhelm playing Jay Z. I mean, this is insane. I mean, yeah, this is him referencing his own stabbing. The incident where he stabbed on Lance Rivera in 1999. The case that, you know, Jay Z had to go to court for and fought to get out of. Quest introduced me to Jaguar. I don't know why I still fuck with him. This is just again, just like a fucking ricochet off Jaguar, right? Because any. I feel like this is someone that Jay Z has always had it out for. This is the part that Jay Z now gets at Nicki Minaj. That lady back on that stuff Sounds like love with him. Her Ken. Remember her man's name as Ken. Can't even pick up. Can't even put they. They kids enough of them. Jay Z did this thing where he would like allude to finishing a line and pause, which, like, is quite popular in freestyles. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of it. I think it's like overly used as like a device. And it's just. Just say the line, you know, Just say what you want to say and mean it. You know, own the lyric. Right. I'm not a big fan of like the. The oh, let me stop or don't get me. Don't get me started. He did it like three times on this. And I have criticism throughout this, but this. That's consistently one of them. But Nikki Slander. I'm all here for. I. I hate Nicki Minaj. I Mean, I've never had a nice thing to say about Nicki Minaj. I think she's an awful person personally and an awful person for hip hop in the community at large. So anytime anybody wants to take shots at them, by all means. I am seeing on the timeline people calling Jay a hypocrite because of his affiliation with, with being seen at dinners with the Kushners. And you know, also just like operating in those circles, I think it's always an interesting balance or a delicate balance. And this is not me shooting J. Bale. I think, how do I say this? When you're operating in billionaire roe, like that level of rare air, you're defined by like you're, you're elevating on, on purely classism. Race matters. But at that, at that level of financial gain, it's not, it's not, it's not one, one A, it's like one and like C, it's just, it doesn't play as much as it does to the brokies, like where we operate. And by brokers, I mean like literally just like the person, the common hard working man or woman, the people that middle class or even, honestly even upper middle class or even upperclass, like there's a clear switch where classism trumps the race in itself. And Jay Z has operated at that level for so long that I'm not saying he's removed from the black experience. I think that's absurd to say out loud, but within certain circles, he has to play certain games. And this is me not cutting him slack for, you know, canoodling with these people and doing dinners with them or like vacationing or whatever, what have you. But I think certain things have to happen for him to advance whatever his next venture is, this NFL deal, you know, that's dealing with, you know, fucking basically slave owners and people that have, you know, led to the destruction of many black and brown lives. But if you want to play ball, you have to, you know, buddy, buddy, get to know the Jerry Joneses of the world and be in their circle. And being in their circle doesn't mean you have to be the good black. You just have to have the money to get invited into those rooms, which Jay Z has been able to do. So but, but I mean, point being, I don't, I don't think, I know the smatter online is kicking in his back and saying it's hypocritical that he's critical of people in MAGA when he's been associated with them. But I think association and Affiliation versus support and championing certain things is like just. They're two very different things. Like his wife Beyonce was campaigning for Kamala. I know personally things that they've done for the Democratic Party that may not be publicized that have to do with a lot of money and financial influence. So, like I. There's a, there's, there's two worlds that have to coexist. Not everything. Again, like the Drake Kendrick example I just stated is black and white. And sometimes you just have to insert yourself in a lane. Even though publicly facing that may not look great for who people perceive you to be, but on the back end, it could be better for the greater good. I'm not shooting J. Bale. I just think that's just how this game operates. On that level. Sometimes you have to take the meeting with Trump.

the mom Donnie example. Mom Donnie has to do this one on one with Trump because they play ball and they play the same type of game. They're both playing ball. He takes a photo with Trump in the Oval Office. He shakes his hand. They laugh and giggle. They share jokes with each other. They don't fuck with each other. But there's a game to be played, and Trump is playing it just as much as Mamdani is playing it. They both are well aware of each other's worth. That's a great example. This, it's politics. Like, this isn't, you know, ooh, I want to pull up on Trump and let's take photos and get lunch together. Fuck Trump. Fuck that whole administrator. Like, he's not doing it out of the goodness of how he feels about Trump. He's doing it for the betterment of the people, in which getting on the good side of someone like that can then bring on to those people that they directly are in charge of or influencing. So in Mondani's case, being the mayor of New York City, in doing so, he was able to get things done for the city of New York that Trump may have otherwise not have put into motion because of how well that first meeting went. Right? Okay, let's continue. Here we go. Here's the big one. This is the. The lines of Drake. The jig is up. Obviously. This is the Janice STFU, the number one song. Drake raps. We know how OG's rocking already. My. The jig is up. In reference. In reference to Jay Z's one of Jay Z's many nicknames, Jigga man. So Jay Z starts this line. The jig is up, nigga. I'm ten up. Wrong chart, champ. You got to look up again. Look up to hov. I never looked up to them. Them crackers got you publishing. Them crackers got you publishing. Gangsta. Go talk tough to them. The whole crowd went. This is also him referencing to Whisper My Name and Too Hard for the Radio. This is because Drake says on those records, respectively, I'll take the 500k, not the dinner. I can never learn shit from y', all. Right? And then he said, damn, y' all was really island hopping back then, huh? Now y' all names got redacted. Yeah. Now a nigga fact check. What? Meaning Jay's. Drake alluding to Jay's involvement in the Epstein files. Correct. Not great for Jay. So this is Jay's response. Basically, like mock. I mean, it's crazy to say this is a sentence, but he's mocking Drake's $400 million publishing deal, which he signed in 2022. He's saying, like, you know, again, you're. You're playing. You're playing low. You're playing child's play. Compared to the figures and numbers that I'm dealing with, that chart means nothing to me. I'm operating music charts are what you're focused on. You're focused on beating your adversaries and going number one in music while I'm climbing the chart of being a billionaire. We're playing two different games. Go focus on Kendrick while I focus on these B's. Right, Continue. He does say, where's the other line about the B? Damn, it's not all the lyrics. I'm reading these lyrics. So sorry, guys. I'm trying to parse through and find all the good parts. But I mean, in short, like, this is. It's funny that Jay Z is coming at this angle so heavy handed because we do know his advice to J. Cole during the beef was to be the bigger person and bow out and remove himself. And honestly, in doing so, in doing this, in responding and airing all this stuff out on a freestyle does it doesn't do Cole any favors. Honestly makes Cole's decision look worse than it. I still think Cole made the right decision and is probably riding high on peace of mind at the moment. But it's really tough when other people's actions can still influence the weight of the decision in which you made, even though that decision you made was better for you, yourself, your mental health, your family, and the people that you love. It's really tough that a decision now that Jay Z makes months later, after years later, after all of this is now resurfacing. The, you know, conversation you had that led you, that was partially led to you bowing out and now it's you, it's. It's being thrown against you again as you looking like a weak person or someone that you know was never belonged in the conversations that you obviously were a one time mentioned in or else they wouldn't keep bringing up Cole's name. As one of these top artists in the game, I can't imagine how frustrating that is for him. And I'm curious. I haven't spoken to anybody on the team about this because it all just happened and I've been traveling. But if I get some information that I feel comfortable sharing, I will. But not today. Yeah, I mean I don't see this stuff going away anytime soon. Curious to see how others respond, if at all. Will he get to Tory Lanez from a jail phone? Will what's. I mean Drake is the king of subs. I mean I'm sure, I'm sure this has put the badger in his back to drop a scary hours. I wouldn't be surprised if Drake dropped more music. I would say the biggest thing that would keep him away from dropping more music is because of how well Iceman, the records from Iceman are charting. I saw that the STF Janus STFU was number one yet again this week and there's I believe two others in the top 10 shebang is I think number five. And then there's another one down on that list somewhere. Again, don't know. My computer. My computer's in front of me but I'm not using it so I'm just kind of going off top here. But it look selfishly is a fan of music. I like this and if this, if the beef that this beef is taking on a second wind and it seems like these sales, the. The winds that propel these sales of this beef are now deriving again from the music itself which I prefer. Like the way this beef worked is one song was released, another song was back for classic back and forth Structure, whatever. And then for a while there, Kendrick had released Gen X. Drake was king of subs on, on his Plot Twist account and on, you know, Instagram. But Drake wasn't doing anything musically to retaliate or retort, which got tiring after a while. So I'm, I'm at least, look, I'm grateful that we're back to the music and the music is becoming the vehicle for responses. And I'm happy that Jay Z took his response, used his platform, used his festival to respond to this as well. I didn't talk about the new hair look.

cool. And look like people kill Jay Z over his look. He was never like a hot, pretty dude. Like, I don't think he ever came in the game. Like, I'm, I'm asap Rocky with this. I'm a pretty. I think he just, he's a rapper. He's just a rapper. Like, that's his thing. So I think the hair is cool. You know, it's funny. He took the locks out, took the fro up, and then just got to talking, got to talking a lot of shit. Do we expect more from Jay? I. I don't know like this. I don't, I know why he did this, but I'm curious as to like, what else is this leading up to? Or was this just. It's hard for me to believe that this was just a knee jerk reaction that Jay just decided to do because it just happened to line up with the festival. And shortly after Drake releasing his album. I knowing how someone like Jay Z operates in a similar way that Kendrick and Drake operate, there are. There have to be other dominoes and other things, other moments that are ready to go or trigger ready to go. Metaphorically, of course, not literally where he can continue this and get more shit off. He knows what he did. He knows this is doing exactly what he expected and what it was supposed to do. But will, are we expecting more from him? I would like that. I don't know, but it's good to see this happening. And it's funny that one of the funniest things about this is the split in the timeline. Jay's an older guy. Drake is now looked at as like an older guy as well, a bit of an OG. He's been in the game for fucking forever, since 2009. We're now seeing the split the way in which like my generation looked at like, who could I even reference here? Like a KRS one or you know, the, the early, the, the first wave of hip hop guys as like, man, they're not like the Kanye's. Like we would, you know, appreciate them, but kind of talk down or greasy on their career because they're not the people that we grew up with, the people that we with. It is really interesting to see the divisiveness on the timeline between the youth and the people. Obviously Drake stands are. Drake stands. They, they go, they ride harder than anybody. Pause. But it's, it's, it's interesting to be like, to see how people choose to criticize Jay Z and how, how they choose to slander him because now we're seeing like the pseudo intellectual crowd that, that's kicking in his back for the hit, the company that he keeps, and him just being in this billionaire class, which again, that classism can go the opposite way where people look at you like a villain because there's the, the tall tale saying is there's no ethical billionaires. But then you're seeing the, the younger kids killing him because he's old and being old is whack and he's corny and all that shit and he's ugly and all that stuff. It's. But you know, and the people that are just Drake haters that want to see Jay, you know, all the, the Rockefeller stands and the Hovengers are like saying that, you know, this is like the, the second coming of Christ. It's just very funny to me to go on the timeline and see like this level of split reaction. But, but I think regardless of reaction, I think everybody would agree that this is, this is, this is good for hip hop. This is great and this is exciting and this is something that, you know, I, I don't think anybody has a problem with in the long run. I do also want to bring up step outside of hip hop for a minute because I just want to talk about two great films briefly. I saw Obsession and Backrooms recently. Both in both great. Well, Obsession's much better, to be honest. You want my honest opinion. Obsessions by this curry barker who had a shorts channel, on YouTube and on Instagram, which are really funny shorts. 26 year old did this film with a shoestring budget, 750k. The movie's pacing to gross over like I think 200, 100 million something. Something ridiculous where the margins are just like so ridiculous they extended its length in the movie theater. He already got greenlit an eight figure script for his next film that doesn't even exist yet. It's quite exciting stuff. Horror and new horror and original horror is really becoming the most exciting space in film at the moment. Backrooms was done by an even younger director. The director of backrooms is 20 years old. He created a YouTube series which is also called Backrooms, if you wanted to check that out. It's like 24 episodes. They're really short. It's scary. It's like a found footage era kind of thing where you toggle between reality and this mirrored reality where just the set design and the movie. Movie itself is incredible. You're seeing so many cool set pieces, rooms turned upside down, walls converging and slants and kind of like a funhouse esque, but in a horror sense. And then there's figures of sorts that lurk in the back rooms themselves. I shot well colored, well set designs, incredible. The narrative and storyline for Backrooms felt short for me, but I just think that's because we're talking about the, you know, the leadership of a 20 year old. I think he was focused much more on the visual part, which he smoked. But this is also produced by A24 Back Rooms, which has also been one of their most profitable. The budget for this was quite hefty. It was a good budget, but it's grossing over, you know, already over 100 million. I think that's approaching 200. It's really exciting stuff. These are great movies from young directors and I know I like to talk about films a lot, but if you haven't seen either of these, even if you're not a horror person, go see them. Especially Obsession. Honestly, I'll stick my neck out more for Obsession. Conceptually, really fun. Not even that scary, funny when it needs to be. And when I say not even that scary, it's creepy as shit and it's like suspenseful as hell. But there's no like real jump. It's just like. It leaves you with an uncomfortable feeling rather than you're like, oh shit. Like there's no spooky like slasher moment, none of that. It's. There's a couple gruesome, brutal moments, but you still Kind of laugh through those because of the absurdity of them. But, yes, go see those films. I'm going to keep this one a little short today. Honestly, not that short. I'm two hours behind New York time here in Mexico City, so it is approaching dinner time here. Locally, I need to eat, and I'm gonna go have a couple cervezas or a cocktail. I cannot drink the water here. The only way I'd miss the next episode is if I have extreme diarrhea from the water. I have been warned by every single person not to drink. I'm aware of this as well. It's not like I didn't know this, but it's, like, the one thing. It is honestly incredible to me that I'm in such a beautiful country and city, and it's wild. Like, as much as critical as I am of America and back home, there are some things that we really take for granted that even a metropolitan city like Mexico City doesn't have. Like, I can't imagine living in a place where I just couldn't drink the water or even have the ice cubes or take a shower and, like, you know, run your mouth out or something like that. Like, it's. It's pretty, you know, crazy to think, like, how underdeveloped a lot of infrastructure is in other bustling and thriving cities. But needless to say, I'll just. I'm buying bottled water again. Everything here costs, like, 10 cents, which is amazing. That does not mean for lack of quality. It just means the. The cost of living is much lower than it is in New York, which is. Which is a luxury that will not go underappreciated for me. Yeah. So I'll keep you guys updated. I might hit a little sound room tonight. There's a really cool sound bar. Sound room near where I am. Mexico City is one of those cities where they appreciate their days off. So Monday, Tuesday, a lot of places are closed. The city really wakes up on Thursdays. But I will be out and about tonight. And honestly, every night while I'm here, I'm here for a while. I'm here throughout the entire NBA Finals. I will find a place to watch every Knicks game. Believe that. I think I'll be home if there is a game seven, I'll be back home in New York, which obviously would be sick. But I've accepted where I am and I'm going to enjoy this trip and enjoy the Knicks from afar. Also, there's the World cup starts while I'm here. Mexico is playing in Mexico City while I'm here. Tried to look into tickets. Maybe we'll see. But regardless, the city's going to be on 10 for that, which I'm super excited to to be here for that. That's going to be a lot of fun. So great, great great week, great month. June, great month for sports and shout out psg. PSG won the Champions League Cup Boss flew out to Hungary and went and then flew to Paris to celebrate. I mean I've just been following his stories, texting and DMing a bit. It just looks like such a fun time to be there. Back to back champs. Pretty exciting. I watched it in the city and there's quite a big fan base of PSG fans in New York. So it's cool to walk around and see see people sporting the jersey and giving them a head nod and a shout out. But yeah gang, I really appreciate y' all again. Live from Mexico City, thank you for tuning in. This is episode 61 of Something Wrong with the Podcast. Love y'. All. Peace.

In this episode of "Something Wrong With The Podcast," Julian Delgado broadcasts live from Mexico City. He discusses Jay-Z’s surprise return to the Roots Picnic stage and delivers a deep-dive, track-by-track reaction and analysis of Jay-Z’s headline-grabbing freestyle. The episode explores Jay-Z’s shifting public persona, his responses to ongoing hip-hop feuds, and the ripple effects within hip-hop culture. Julian also draws broader connections about class, power, and the industry’s social divides, while sharing personal updates and a brief jaunt into recent horror cinema.
Julian frames the Jay-Z Roots Picnic Freestyle as a generational event—crucial not just for lyrical content, but for how it reveals hip-hop’s underlying fault lines: age, money, and media vs. music battles. He celebrates the return of music-centric beef, questions the sustainability and meaning of these public moves, and weaves in pop culture notes for flavor. Ultimately, Julian sees the good: "this is good for hip-hop...this is exciting."
