Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Welcome to the Standard of Truth podcast. In this podcast, Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat and Dr. Richard Leduc explore the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and the life and teachings of the prophet Joseph Smith. They examine the original historical sources and provide context for events of the past. They approach the history of the church with faith, expertise and humor. Foreign. Hi. Welcome to another bonus episode of the Standard of Truth podcast. I know we're spoiling you and you're thinking, I didn't even want the regular ones that I accidentally subscribed to. I've asked them to stop putting it in my feed and yet I still get them every week. There doesn't seem to be a way to discontinue getting this podcast. Please help me. And then of course, we don't help, but we thought, you know, maybe, you know, for fun we could, we could have another talk. So. Thank you for joining us. I am your host, Dr. Garrett Dirkmont, and I am joined by my friend, Dr. Mo Buckets, Richard Latook.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Well, Garrett, we had, we had a pretty decent, pretty decent showing of those that are participating in the bracket for your life challenge. And my, my niece is tied for fifth place. I'm really proud of her. Hallie, way to go.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I like the fact that she named her picks Kansas champions, which you would assume would immediately eliminate her from any type of, any competition whatsoever. But then she picked against Kansas, so, so she wants Kansas to be the champions, but then pick for them to lose.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah, but Halle, Hallie came in strong. She got, she has Houston actually winning. So it's been, it's been pretty fun. I'm, I'm ranked 24th, tied with my son currently on a mission where, where we picked over, over his p Day. I don't know, do you want to say who's in the front now or who has the greatest likelihood of winning?
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
So, I mean, let's just, let's let's give a little bit of gravitas to the people who, the, the people who at least right now feel like they have a chance to win. And, and then we'll, then we'll, as we like we are want to do on this podcast, then we will crush them.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Okay.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah. With reality. The reality that is, you know, that they, that, that they got no shot. So, like right now there's someone, you know, Brent has a, he's number one. He has the most points right now. His bracket is in the 99.9 percentile of all brackets submitted to ESPN. Now that is pretty impressive.
Dr. Richard Leduc
That's pretty impressive. Yeah.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
And he's followed very closely on his heels by Sacrilegious, which is Eric Orchard. And then also I proposed on Moroni Day. All of them are 99 in the 99 percentile. And then the last one tied for third is third string delights, which makes it really well with Michael there. So all those people, you know, they're feeling really good about themselves right now.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yes.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Much like you were when you saw you were 24th.
Dr. Richard Leduc
I was 24th. I was pretty happy about that. I never win. But the whole point is not embarrassing yourself. And 24th, I think is. Is right in there. So Dabbles in Phonics, formerly Hooked on Phonics, is 24th. I have zero percent chance to win. Garrett.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, there are fortunate part.
Dr. Richard Leduc
There are people that are ahead of me that have the same picks I do. So I have zero percent chance to win. That is. That is humbling. We have. We have quite a few people that are participating. And so it's not like this, you know, out of 10 kind of deal. Now, my wife promised a prize, a family prize. So whoever in my family is leading. And so that's currently my niece, followed relatively closely by my son, who is on a mission in Peru, won't be hearing this. And so we intend. If he does beat us, we will not pay out.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
No, that's the best thing to do. By the time they get all of the parasites out of his system, he won't even remember this year's marshmallows.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Our bishop sent us a thing from the handbook that says if you're. If the missionary has experienced diarrhea for more than two weeks, that you should contact a medical professional. And my response is, well, is 20 months longer than two weeks. I'm not sure if he's experienced a problem.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
We've gotten even more great names. Like someone did implied referrals. Right. Because.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Oh, that's great.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
They're just cozying up to Richard. But one of the best is the crossovers from Kolob. Now that now these are of the people that are in the top, you know, 30, basically. Now a lot of them are tied because the points are, you know, very similar. So people are tied in a lot of ways. My wife, though, she's tied for 14th.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Wow.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
How about that? Yep. She's crushing it. Mrs. Dirk Moss is what she put as her name. But, you know, I'm glad to see King Noah's jaguars also holding up their. Because, you know, that's very good. If they lose, they become carpets. You Also have, you know, apostle, apostate and apothecary. I mean that was, that was a.
Dr. Richard Leduc
That was a crowd favorite for sure. Well, so, so now if we go to the forecasting now, Garrett.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yes.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Oh, boy. We have Phoebe Palmer's fan. That's a 4.9% chance to win. They've got the most and they've got Auburn winning.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
A 5% chance to win out of 192 brackets is pretty incredible.
Dr. Richard Leduc
That's pretty good. Yeah, it is pretty good. I proposed on Moroni Day has Duke winning at a 4.7. Bad podcast, worst bracket, 4.2. Dr. Philastis picks. One is 3.7. Now. Now there is one. Now this is, you know, this is going the other way. You have non PhD historian at a two point. But that's because they have Alabama winning. So now obviously we want Alabama to lose on Thursday.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Well, non PhD historian right now is ranked 127th. But because he picked Alabama to win, if Alabama wins, so many other people will be shattered that he actually has a chance to win.
Dr. Richard Leduc
This is the thing, people overthink the first weekend and it's whoever has the most in the Elite Eight Final Four, those are worth just a ton of points.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
You know another one that's like, this is the Ask Jeeves.
Dr. Richard Leduc
That one. Yeah.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
That was because they picked Texas Tech. Even though they're ranked 83rd right now, if Texas Tech pulls off the Lubbock Miracle, then they have a 2% chance of winning the whole thing.
Dr. Richard Leduc
So I was down in Vegas last weekend. We took the kids to a Nate Bargazzi show. It was hilarious. And so on the Saturday, we were watching the BYU game. BYU wins in dramatic fashion against your, you know, your unofficial team, the Wisconsin Badgers.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, I was cheering against them as hard as I've ever cheered.
Dr. Richard Leduc
And then we drove down the strip listening to Tabernacle Choir and screaming, go Kooks. It was, I feel, a very reasonable response to the. The outcome of the game.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, I think we got looks. There were some bad calls that, you know, that, that were upsetting the people in my basement watching.
Dr. Richard Leduc
You're going to get an elbow in the groin, Garrett. It's going to happen.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I don't think I've ever seen an ejection like that in my life. And I know that they keep changing the rules. But you know what's crazy? Legitimately in the next game, in the ucla Tennessee game, the defender jumping out on someone who was out on the three point line, like, you know, jumped towards them to make sure. They couldn't shoot the three. He need the guy in a very special area as well.
Dr. Richard Leduc
You're going to get a knee in the groin, Garrett. Yeah, and knees, elbows.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
And it dropped the guy.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Head, shoulders, knees and toes.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
He's the one moving towards the guy because he's the one jumping at the guy out on the three point line.
Dr. Richard Leduc
He was startled.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, well, so they go review it. Not only is this defender not ejected for clearly moving his knee into the guy, they don't even call it a common foul. They just. It's not a foul play on. Even though literally the same thing happened. So in one game, the guy's ejected, it's the end of the game. Flagrant 2. In the other game, it wasn't even a common foul after they reviewed it.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Well, I mean, you know, some refs have more groin sensitivity than other refs.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
That's going to be one of our new catchphrases on the podcast, Roy.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Sensitivity. Well, so it's very exciting. Here's hoping for Phoebe Palmer's fan, who if Auburn completes it, they're going to be in really good shape. So way to go. That's exciting. Exciting. I have zero percent chance to win. I can only really go down from here, but that's. That's exciting.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
So anyway, yeah, I mean, look, there's other people that seem like they have no chance, but they do. Like, like Cameron picked Michigan State to win the whole thing. So even though they are ranked 115th, they have just below a 1% chance of winning.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Well, you've got, you've got women in labor that, I mean, if Tennessee wins, they have a 1.1% chance to win.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
So it is crazy how some people, you feel like you're completely out, but actually there's still a chance. Unless you're me and Richard, in which case there isn't a chance.
Dr. Richard Leduc
What's, what's your ranking, by the way?
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Oh, it's like it's tied for like 89th or.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Oh my gosh, Angie's crushed you.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I'm tied with like 50 people for 89th.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Oh, that's. That's unfortunate. But it has been, has been good fun. Now, Garrett, there's so many exciting things in this bonus episode. We have, we have quite a few emails to read here, but did you want to spend any time and talk about the tour for next year, 2026?
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yes. We've actually received numerous inquiries about when our tours are going to be next year and we've nailed down the dates, our dates. It's A little tough because I have children that are both serving and planning to come home from a mission.
Dr. Richard Leduc
We had all these dang kids just ruining everything.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
We didn't think about what these kids would do to us. Now, in an attempt to not be like Richard, who is neither going to be there when his son goes to the mtc, nor when his son comes home, we're going to try to do both of the tours in June next year. What are the dates on that, Richard?
Dr. Richard Leduc
So last year we did this back.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
To back, and it was good work.
Dr. Richard Leduc
It was great, actually. We had a couple.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I was very tired at the end.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah, boy, we were. We were really dragging into Springfield, Illinois.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, we're like, there's Abraham Lincoln. He hated Mormons. You don't even want to see his statue. Good.
Dr. Richard Leduc
So my. My uncle, by the way, he commented on he was unaware of some of those things and loved how much you trashed chat GPT.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
That's been very popular. We've had a lot of people say, I love the fact you attack the answers from AI.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah, no, it was good. And that was. That was a fun one because we were just driving in the car and we were. We were going back and forth with. It's essentially like the episode of Seinfeld. This is the show. This should be the show.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, the show is just us fighting with AI chatbots.
Dr. Richard Leduc
So the first. The first one, we're doing Palmyra, Kirtland again, flying into Baltimore and then. And then heading north. That would be Sunday, June 14, and then coming back on Saturday, June 20, where then we would actually fly from Cleveland to Kansas City, Missouri, where we start the second tour. That would be June 21st, coming back June 27th. So.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
So we'll get those up on the website. I know we've had a lot of people ask, and so I would say if you're thinking about doing it, make sure you book it earlier rather than later. Just because we. We honestly had probably in the neighborhood of three dozen people who wanted to get on the tour this year. And their. The bus is no more room. It's completely full.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah, it's pretty packed.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
So we really appreciate everyone who's willing to support us that way. The tour groups are. They're just the most fun ever. And a lot of our inside jokes really come from, you know, Richard getting his hand trapped underneath a car, the front seat of his car. So that's, you know, I should say trapped underneath the car. That makes it sound like at least there's a better explanation.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Well, if I Had a. If I had, like, a Flintstone car, it's possible, then that way it could have gotten trapped underneath, but no, that'll be. That'll be great. So we look forward to 2026 and Garrett leading those tours, which will be a grand old time. And so Garrett, now we have Phoebe Draper Palmer Brown Mailbag. We start off with a couple of missionaries. My favorite of all of the missionaries comes to us from Elder Young. It says, can I have access to your podcast? I'm in the Florida Orlando Mission. My mom said I need to listen to it. Thank you, Elder Young. Your enthusiasm will be rewarded with access to. To the Google Drive. Never in all my days has anyone been so excited for access.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, I feel like he may not have caught the spirit quite yet.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Elder Young, we love your mom and thank you for all she does.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
My mom's been bugging me to email you guys, so, honestly, I gotta tell you, when I was on my mission, I had a companion that was assigned to me in part because I think he was not as enthused about being on his mission as a missionary. Could be he would been out much, much, much longer than me. And his door approach. It's going to sound like I'm making this up, but after twice of him doing this, I said, I'll just take the rest, Elder. Which is what he wanted anyway. And this was his door approach. He came, hi, we're missionaries from that Mormon church. You wouldn't want to listen to anything that we have to say, would you? And that was his door approach. Now, it was not as effective as you think it would be.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Still better than my door approach, though.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
So, yeah, yeah. I mean, meanwhile, my door approach was like, you want to learn about how God became God? I mean, so, I mean, I'm not saying that it was. It was much more effective, but, yeah, so I'm not saying that Elder Young is. Is. Is that unenthusiastic. It's just, you know, he's like, my mom says I should listen to this garbage so I can get it.
Dr. Richard Leduc
That's not bad. That's not bad. Well, well. So you're in luck. I gave you access to the Google Drive. And our missionary madness continues. We've had, I mean, it's been crazy, actually, hundreds and hundreds of missionaries every week. It's just this. I updated it on Thursday, and then in just a couple of days, we had over, like, 60 missionaries that we added. It's been a lot of fun. Now, Garrett, this next one comes from Elder Evanson. He is serving In a part of Brazil that you're not going to attempt to pronounce. I mean, there's just.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Don't, don't do it. Let's let the veneer that we are intelligent maintain its intact.
Dr. Richard Leduc
I feel like I lost that, like four years ago, but. Hello, standard of truth, people. I'm Elder Evanson. I am serving my mission in Brazil. My parents have been listening to your podcast for a few years now, and they talked about it all the time. I listened to a few episodes before my mission. It was pretty interesting, but didn't listen a ton. Now that I am on the mission, which. That's usually how these things go.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
That's how we get you. That's how we get you to buy.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Our tray when you have nothing else to do. You want to reference. You want to explain that? Reference.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
There's an old Jim Gaffigan video where, you know, he's like, why are people putting, you know, a great comedian right where he's talking about, why are people putting, like, recipes on everything? You know what I mean? Like, he's like, you expect to get. And I'm not doing him justice here. He's like, ridiculously funnier. And I'm trying to remember this from 20 years ago, but he said, he said, you know, you expect to see a recipe on everything nowadays. Like, you get a bottle of water, what's it gonna have as a recipe on the. On the. Oh, you can make ice with this. Oh, well, apparently you just freeze the stuff. Oh. Oh, they want you to buy their tray. That's the catch. They want you to buy their tray.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Now that I'm on my mission, I would like to be able to listen and learn more about church history. During P Day, I have been reading saints and have really loved it. I have also read through various gospel topics, essays, and other things of that sort on Gospel Library. And I thought I would finally get around to sending this email. My mom recommended asking for the Google Drive with the podcast. Pretty much my first week of my mission. And now I'm on into month five. You're just around the corner. Elder Evanson, you're about to burn a tie or a shirt or. I can't remember what it is. It was a tie, six months and a shirt. Although that was banned in my mission because one of the fires got out of hand and we weren't supposed to do that anymore. I don't know.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Okay, all right.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Did that happen in Wisconsin? Did you burn a tie and a.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
So there were missionaries that burned ties and shirts and Then eventually, whole suits, depending on when they're like 6 months, 12 months. It was a very much frowned upon thing.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah. Because of the fire and things.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Well, I mean, yeah. But also, like, it's kind of like you're celebrating what is the message that you're sending? You know what I mean? Like, you're not, like, in the Chateau d'oeuvre, you know, you're. You're not.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Learning defense in your. In your friend's prison cell.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
This is not the, you know, the can of Monte Cristo here. You know what I mean? Where. Where you're scratching on the walls. I.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Were some weeks, though, man.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
There were some weeks. Yeah. Okay. There were multiple Chateau d'il weeks in my.
Dr. Richard Leduc
I think I've told this before, but I remember there was one week. There was one week when it was a brutal week. And I am. I'm serving in Murrieta, California, and we come home for lunch, and we. We kneel down to say prayers, and I forgot all of the basic general rules for prayers, and I just said, could you please help us?
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Like, it was just nice. And. And the answer you got back was no, not just for praying, right?
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah. No, man, There's. There's some days where he's like, what.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Were you, like, singing to yourself in the background? Like, after the trials, we will be blessed. But this love. Are you doing that? Because that's all you can listen to, right? That's all I can do. Yeah.
Dr. Richard Leduc
It's all Janice Cat Perry all the time.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Amazing, amazing songwriters. So blessed that the church has had them. And also, I hated every note of every song that they ever.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Oh, no way.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
By the time I was done with my mission, Morris Hill.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Oh, my gosh. Oh, that was the best. That was the best.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I. I remember that one of my companions had the Jazzed up in the Leafy Treetops cd.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Brett Raymond.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah. Brett Raymond.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Primarily for. Yeah, whatever.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, Primarily for grownups.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah. Oh, man, that was great.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Like, almost like a scat jab.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Oh, my gosh. Absolutely changed my life. Primarily for Grownups was tremendous.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I was not as big a fan, and I think maybe it was just. I listened to it too much. It's like camping for me. You know, I once was fine with camping. Then I grew to hate camping. Now I loathe it in a way that only a Calvinist describing their version of hell could come to a similar explanation.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Well, Garrett, on Thursday, we have an episode dropping Calvinism versus the Standard of Truth podcast, and we're very excited for that one. That was that one's a little long.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
We kind of. We only. We only covered a couple of the Calvinist points.
Dr. Richard Leduc
It's an hour and a half episode. It's. It's a long episode.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Maybe we should have broken that into two.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah, we should have. We get two weeks out of that thing. Way less content to produce.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Maybe we should stop doing bonus episodes and do things that matter.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Well, we wanted to get into the. The basketball action and read a bunch of emails, but anyway, he goes on to say, elder Evanson does I want to continue learning about church history because it's super interesting and it is also awesome to be able to understand and know the context of the common criticisms of early problems in the church. I also would like to share a scripture that I think works really great for talking about complicated church history topics such as plural marriage. This is Nephi, a prophet of God, talking in First Nephi 13:22. And I said unto him I know not. I think that's pretty much it. That's. That's good. I love that. It's good advice. I think that you guys should use this scripture at some point. We just used it now and we'll use it for always. Anytime anyone asks us to talk about polygamy, we'll just reference that scripture. It can be really useful in responding to people's questions. Thank you, Elder Evanson. So thank you very much, Elder Evanson. That's very nice. We have a couple other missionary email. This one comes from Elder. Elder Grant. I've been listening to your podcast for a couple of weeks now and I just wanted to thank you for all the hard work that you put into your podcast. I also had a question. I'm a missionary serving in Panama and recently had an encounter with an American here where he said something that kind of bugged me in this conversation. He seemed to blame all of the world's problems on organized religion. I believe his exact claim was more people have been killed and harmed in the name of organized religion than have been helped by it. I've heard this argument before in the States and it seems so wrong and unacademic, but I don't really know how to respond to this. Thanks again, Elder Grant.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, boy. Well, thank you, Elder Grant. Maybe this would be a whole episode that we could do this on, but at the same time, I don't know. I think the best response to some of those questions would be that Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, and Chairman Mao Mount exist. Anyone who's blithely saying that more people have been killed by organized Religion than have been helped by it is not. Is discounting that in the 20th century alone, the greatest mass murderers of population were essentially atheists and those outside of it. I mean, one can have a debate and an argument about, you know, Hitler's religion. He was certainly into the occult and, you know, but not a whole lot of debate when it comes to Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot and Mao. It's. They are working against organized religion in the tens of millions of people that are murdered in those cases. So it's a pithy saying. People say it because it makes them. They think, they think that they sound smart when they say it. But it's also a. It's also a little bit misleading. Even if you threw out all the horrors of the 20th century, essentially.
Dr. Richard Leduc
All.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Cultures in the world have some form of religion to them. And so, yeah, there's going to be an aspect of religion in a lot of things that are going on. And you can focus on the obvious excesses of religion like the Crusades where there are tens of thousands of people killed and murdered in the name of advancing religion, but. Or the Spanish Inquisition. You know, at the same time, it's not something that you ever hear a historian say in part because assigning the reasons for why people have been killed is a such more problematic thing. I mean, why were Latter Day Saints murdered in Missouri? Well, you could say, well, because they, you know, were practicing the wrong kind of religion. Okay, so that's on the Latter Day Saints side. But do you think it's like some atheistic drunk Missourian who cares whether or not the Mormons are praying to the right Jesus? They couldn't possibly care. So, so how do you determine that person's, that person's motives? Right. So I think historians are much more careful, at least careful historians, before they start assigning, oh yeah, it was because of religion that this happened. And I think that that's the broader thing. So you know what people say a lot of things. Don't let those things bother you. Regardless of whether or not someone thinks that organized religion has been a net negative for the world. Joseph Smith, in his revelation from the Lord Jesus Christ and from Heavenly Father in that first vision is told that the religions of the world have to one degree or another have gone astray. And so frankly, the whole reason why we need a restoration is in part of what this guy has to say. He's claiming, well, organized religion's done more damage than it has good. All the more reason than if there is a God, that he intervenes and creates a Restoration, which is exactly what you're there to share.
Dr. Richard Leduc
I imagine that the person that made this comment looks like Wayne Knight, the guy that plays Newman in Seinfeld in Jurassic park. And he's wearing a Tommy Bahamas shirt and he's got a white hat and he's sipping on a Corona. So arrogant. In his pithy, stupid comment in Panama.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Does he have a kind of high pitched raspy voice like, like Newman?
Dr. Richard Leduc
I, I imagine that he does and that he somehow smuggled in some sort of Barbasol can the the secrets of unlocking dinosaurs and bringing back to Earth.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
You know, that makes sense because in the original Jurassic park, the island was off the coast of Costa Rica, very close to Panama. So maybe they were trying a different island this time.
Dr. Richard Leduc
That's what I assume. That's what I see. This person just arrogantly being pithy with a comment that he's got life figured out, even though he just spouts things that are stupid. All right, what you said was much nicer. This next email comes to us from Elder Bensley. I'm writing to humbly request a podcast link with premium content to your podcast. I am serving in the Copenhagen, Denmark mission, Icelandic speaking, meaning that I will only serve in Iceland for the entirety of my mission. While there is no way that the Icelandic missionaries could compete with the other missionaries in numbers listening to your podcast, by allowing me and my companion to listen to your premium content, you will be heard in roughly 16% of all the young missionaries serving in Iceland. So that's very good. My parents really like listening to your podcast and I know that I would appreciate having something to listen to as my companion and I make our regular, almost twice a week, one hour drive from where we serve in Selfoss, Iceland. I'm sure I pronounced that perfectly. To the capital city of Reykjavik for mission meetings and events. Thank you, Elder Bensley. It's very nice, very cool.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I'm glad that we finally touched the shores of Iceland. There's actually a really big celebration that's going on there this summer with Icelandic authorities celebrating the Latter Day Saint converts in Iceland who many of them came to Spanish Fork where I live and settled. And so there's actually a presentation that's being done in Iceland that's involving some governor government officials. I don't know who they actually are going to be having with the, the Ensign Peak foundation, which used to be the Mormon Historic Sites foundation, now it's called the Enzyme Peak Foundation.
Dr. Richard Leduc
How about that?
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
And there's a big old presentation there. I, I wanted to go But I would. I think it might have fallen at the same time that some of the tours were going on, but I can't remember what that. And I'm sure I wasn't invited, but.
Dr. Richard Leduc
It'S never stopped before.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, yeah, yeah, That's. Those are the best things to crash, the ones that are not in any way that you're invited to, so.
Dr. Richard Leduc
So this next email comes to us from Jane. Hello, my good PhD friends. I'm just wondering if you have any church history tours scheduled for 2026. Oh, my gosh, Jane, it's as though we assumed that you were going to send this email and put that together. Any idea of those dates? We mentioned those. So that'll be essentially the entire month of June of 2026. And so they're not currently available. We'll get them available on the website here in the next month or so, which will be great. We're just a bunch of goofy Idaho women interested in having a laugh or two and learning a lot about church history.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I want them on the tour now. Of course.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Thank you, Garrett. Or Garrett spelled different for your last Voices of the Restoration. With Hank and John, I learned so much about history and Emma and Joseph. It was fabulous. I'm also wondering if there are a lot of walking on the tour, like 15 miles a day or what do I need to get a gym membership before I go? I mean, maybe.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
It'S not an Ironman. Like, we're not having you swim across a reservoir somewhere, but there is moderate levels of activity. I mean, the biggest things that you need to be able to walk for are if. Depending on which tour you go on. I mean, if you're going on the Palmyra one, there's a considerable amount of walking at the Sacred Grove, you know, just to get around. If you are going to hike up the hill Cumorah, there's a considerable amount of walking, although they do have missionaries with golf carts who are more than willing to take you up there and hopefully not pitch you off the side as you're going up there. I mean, imagine if you were called on a mission to the Hill Cumorah Visitor center, and your job was to drive a golf cart on some back paths. That sounds amazing, you know, is awesome. But really, though, the biggest thing is, I mean, and there's a lot of walking. If we end up going to Niagara Falls, there's a lot of walking because there's no way for a bus to get close. So you do have to walk basically a mile to get to where you can get on the boat to see the Vols. But honestly, the biggest thing that you'd have to prep for is you'd have to get on the Stairmaster, right? You'd have to get on the Stair climber because we go to the Kirtland Temple. And in order to see all of the Kirtland Temple, you have got to go upstairs that your ancestors designed in a Dungeons and Dragon esque attempt to prevent you from going up the stairs. They are steep, they are straight up, and they are tall. And when it. So that's the biggest thing. I mean, you can always go to the lower floor of the temple, but if you want to see it all, you've got to get. You got to get your legs ready to pump to get up the. Get up those stairs. So, I mean, everyone should be in, you know, moderately good physical condition, but, you know, hopefully, you know, the things that you can't do, you can. We can work around.
Dr. Richard Leduc
All right, this next email, Garrett, comes to us from Randall, not Randy. Since this is an international podcast, I think that was a very funny joke.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah, he was a little worried that we'd be offending our English listeners. Don't worry, Randall. We have none. So you don't have to worry about. Yeah, we. We have a missionary in Iceland, but.
Dr. Richard Leduc
I'm pretty sure he would be of the non senior missionaries in Iceland. Garrett. 16.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I need that elder to push that number to 30%. That's what I need.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Likely. Wait, no, no, 32%.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
No, I want it somehow. 30, like, only.
Dr. Richard Leduc
All right, so, Randall, it's hard to overstate the impact your podcast has had on me. I appreciate the time you both have put into this podcast and you're striving to fill the world with the good news of our savior, Jesus Christ, living prophets, proper historical methods, critical thinking, and how to show love for your friends and enemies. I don't know the enemies part. We've done a very good job of showing the love, but yeah, I mean.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
I believe that you call it me being hard in the paint.
Dr. Richard Leduc
You go hard in the paint on people. I just called the person that said the thing about, you know, organized religion is the, you know, the chubbier guy from Seinfeld that causes all of the.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Dinosaurs to get out and eat everyone.
Dr. Richard Leduc
That's right. Yeah. I served a real mission in Argentina, 1997-1999. I'm amazed at how you are sharing and increasing your talents with usury. That's very funny. I feel that you're not working very well.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Just so you know, Randall, I feel.
Dr. Richard Leduc
That your episodes on Doctrine and Covenants 93 and are Mormons Christian helped me to understand some of the high theology of why I've been told I believe in the wrong Jesus, including by my own son. I was also deeply touched and troubled by your episode on the Prosperity Gospel, which caused me deep introspection on how I think about my own and others trials. Overall, my testimony of calling Joseph Smith, of the calling of Joseph Smith has been strengthened. Thank you so much. However, I am facing a problem. Recently I started listening to your podcast from the very beginning as recommended by Hank Smith on Follow him because I want to catch up. I have some unhealthy completionist inclinations. So. By the way, my wife has the same thing. If we start a series, she has to watch the entire series. No, Angie, like.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
So it's actually Angie likes to watch, you know, like a reality show. She likes the thrill of like a Survivor kind of thing.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
But she cannot watch it before it's actually completed because she doesn't want to wait a week to see what happens next. Now that the problem with that is we have to wait till the season's over to start watching it.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
But then you're getting, you know, someone's on the Tonight show, like, hey, can you believe you won Survivor? Oh, it's amazing. How about that? You know, so then, you know. So there's nothing but spoiler alerts everywhere.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Yeah. So the completionist inclinations. Listening to your podcast has consumed my time. I listen while walking the dog, while working in the yard, while I should be reading my scriptures or focusing on my employment. I work from home science.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Should be reading my script. Please still read your scriptures. They're way better.
Dr. Richard Leduc
All right. Well, you know, sometimes I listen around my family instead of interacting with them, and I'm tempted to skip church to listen to you instead. It's the last thing on my mind at night and the first thing I think of in the morning. I can't wait to find out if you'll ever get to what the people cry out for, if Richard will ever be Dr. Dick or just hear your voice. By the way. That's what Jeff England calls me, by the way.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Yeah. And he. And you know, spoiler alert. He. He is a professor no more. He is now. Well, he's still a professor, but he is. But Dr. Richard.
Dr. Richard Leduc
Well, so he was my bishop and he before it wasn't doctor, so it's. He's classed it up. I do appreciate it. Thank you, Jeff, for classing it up and Throwing a doctor at the beginning of that, or just to hear your voice transition to a high whine when trying to talk without laughing? As I'm sure others have definitely written to you about this same problem, I'm looking for your feedback on how I can get this under control. In all seriousness, though, I do have a question or recommendation for a future episode or series. My son, early 20s, is now a proper Christian, and one of the things he brought up were how Joseph Smith was a false prophet, since not all of his prophecies have come true. For example, his prophecy about the Civil War and how the south would petition Great Britain for help. My ear was turned to here during season one when the Civil War came up. And although you mentioned Great Britain becoming involved, you didn't mention whether the south specifically requested their aid. A cursory Internet search didn't help me much either. So I'm wondering if a series or any of the specific prophecies of Joseph Smith would be a worthy topic. Thanks, Randall.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Well, so we did do a podcast all about Doctrine and covenants, section 87, and we talked about this a little bit. So we can. We can maybe point you to that. But let's just say, you know, before you go and look for, you know, our discussion of this is. I mean, I don't know who's giving your son the information, but I do know whoever's giving him the information doesn't know what they're talking about. In fact, there are an entire bookshelf of books written by historians talking about the South's desperate efforts to get the British to join their side in the American Civil War. They have ambassadors that they send to England. They try shutting off the flow of cotton to England in order to goad England into getting into the war. They do everything they can to get England into the war. I don't think you could find a single Civil War historian who would say the south did not call upon Great Britain to get in the war. But while my dander's up, let me just say this. Just think about how ridiculous, ridiculous this argument is. Joseph Smith gave his prophecy of the coming of the American Civil War in 1832, Christmas Day of 1832, almost three decades before the Civil War. Now, it's easy for Americans today to say, like, you know, because all we ever think about when we talk about that era is, well, of course there was going to be a Civil War because of slavery. Like, that's. That's easy for us to say, because we know that there was a Civil War just Like, it's really easy for someone today to say, well, I mean, everyone knew that if Hitler came to power that he was gonna. He was gonna kill everyone and invade the whole rest of the world. I mean, well, yeah, everyone knows that now, but of course, everyone didn't know it then because it hadn't happened yet. Nobody believed that there was going to be a bloody, horrific Civil War in 1832. In 1832, people believed that if there was any conflict over slavery, it would be the exact same thing that happened in South Carolina with Andrew Jackson marching an army. Andrew Jackson, the slaveholder, by the way, who, when South Carolina refused to pay the tariff and asserted their own independence, Andrew Jackson marched the federal army out down there. And before the army even got there, South Carolina's like, oh, actually, we were just kidding. We're totally fine with all tariffs, and everything's okay. Everything's fine. Everything's fine here now. And very much like the scene from Star wars when Han Solo is trying to hold off the. The. The. The guards when they're breaking into the detention level of the Death Star. And, you know, someone rings and he answers while they're shooting the place up, and he's like. He's like, what's going on there? And he's like, oh, everything's. Everything's fine now. Everything's fine. You know, large. We had a slight weapons malfunction, but everything's fine. Everything's all fine. How are you? You know, that is how South Carolina reacted. And so you actually have a really hard time finding any Americans who believe the Civil War is legit when the south secedes. The majority of people commenting on it don't believe that it's actually going to be Americans killing Americans any more than you would believe today. If California voted that they became an independent country because they're not happy with the current administration. You would have a really hard time believing that F35s are launching missiles into the. To the, you know, California State House. You would. You would think, okay, a little bit of a temper tantrum. This is going to go to the courts, and everything's going. You know, that's what you would expect. No one expected the war to be long. The first battle of the war, the first pitch battle in it. Battle of Bull Run or Manassas Junction, if you happen to be from the South. So few people thought that there would actually be any real fighting, that rich people from D.C. went out in their finest gowns and carriages to watch the first battle because they thought what would happen is The Union forces would array themselves in front of the South. The south would be like, oh no, that's a real army. And they would retreat and it'd be a fun little, you know, Sunday school picnic. So the very fact that Joseph Smith is saying that it's going to be over slavery, not taxes, that it's going to be horrific, that it's going to terminate in the deaths of many souls. So let me get this straight. All of those, Joseph is dead on. Correct. On 30 years before they happen. And whoever is feeding your son information thinks that the proof that it's a false prophecy is that the south didn't really ask for Great Britain's help. Which whoever is telling him that is legions of stupid because like I said, there are two dozen Civil War diplomacy books out right now that the entire point of the book is either the Union trying to convince Great Britain from getting involved on the south side or the south trying to convince Great Britain to come to their aid. So I think whoever your son's getting his information from is utterly inept. And frankly, it means that he is at a great level of horrible anti Mormonism. Right? That's not the kind of anti Mormonism that you're getting just from, you know, someone walking by on the street saying, by the way, Brigham Young was a polygamist. That's the kind of thing you're getting from someone who is absolutely desperate on seven levels of a subreddit on, on anti Mormonism. And there's a reason why historian wouldn't say it because it's stupid.
Dr. Richard Leduc
So that was. That's in Episode or Season 1, Episode 10, Joseph Smith's Civil War Prophecy. And Garrett, we. We have several more emails, but we, we are out of, we are out of time. On a bonus.
Dr. Garrett Dirkmaat
Let me say one more thing before we, before we close. We've had. We need to have a shout out to Hiram who sent us an email once hoping that we'd give him a shout out. We then did not give him a shout out because it was, it was, you know, we, we get hundreds of emails, right? So most people don't make it. He then emailed again telling us that because he rolled his ankle, he couldn't do anything but listen to us, which was against his will. But he said that he wanted to. He wants a simple shout out on one of yalls free episodes so I can flex to my friends and family about my new claim to fame in being mentioned in Yalls standard of Truth Empire. Pretty sure Hiram's from Texas, but you know, we're we are going to go off of that. He says in all seriousness thank you and Garrett, he's writing to you, not me for all that you do. It's strengthened my testimony the prophet Joseph Smith and made me feel more prepared for my mission. And he said from a future boy C spelled with a boy C Idaho missionary neighboring the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania mission. Hiram. So not only did he do that, he actually had another friend just email in begging us to please mention him on the podcast. Hiram, you have a great network that of people that support you now get on your mission.
Dr. Richard Leduc
That's right. And also we will now make this bonus premium so we can't hear it.
