Caller
But I'm calling him. Got this friend who was addicted to a few different things for a while. Not sure all the drugs, but definitely alcohol. Either way, cleaned up his life, moved to Costa Rica to teach people how to speak English and had been doing good and everything. But he'd only been down there two months and he met someone and he married them.
Stav
Oh wow.
Caller
And apparently this was a very bad idea because he didn't know her very well and she is a abusive alcoholic and a chronic cocaine addict. And every time he tries to help her to get off these things, she makes him get back on this.
Stav
Oh, wow.
Caller
Well, basically she's kicked him out of the house and told him that he's not allowed to live there anymore and that he doesn't have any money, he's lost everything and so he's living on the street is what he's saying. And he recently created an account to help to buy him a plane ticket. And his plane ticket would be back home here in Georgia. And it's $1,000 for the ticket because he wants to leave right away. My issue is I don't know if I can trust him at all because yeah, of course. One, this sounds very, very sketchy. He needs money. I can get it for him right now. This is the first time I would be able to in a very long time. I just recently inherited some money and he knows about it and I'm wondering if he won't use that.
Stav
This is fucking incredible, this guy. Actually, let's finish it. But I just mean it's so awesome to be like, oh, my wife is making me do cocaine. Like my addict friend who's like, went to go teach English, okay, Immediately gets married. His. His wife is really abusive and forces him to do drugs and then kicks him out. Why? Exactly. I don't like it. Just like, why are you listening to this guy? But let's finish. And. And now. And this all happens when he knows you have money. All of a sudden he needs it really bad. Keep going, Elders. Sorry. It's just so funny.
Caller
And I think the best case scenario in this situation because I don't think if I bought him a ticket, I would get it back no matter what.
Stav
Of course not.
Caller
But best case scenario would be he shows back up, gets his life together and just never pays me back, which is terrible. Sucks, but. Or the worst case scenario is he ends up taking the money and just using it with his wife to keep continuing what they're doing.
Stav
Right.
Caller
I don't know. I want to be a good person here, Stav. I really do. And I also know I need to set boundaries. I'm in therapy for this kind of thing. Like, give me some advice, baby, please. Eldest chime in Anything else?
Stav
You didn't want to move this one to the front of the line?
Eldis
Wait, wait, wait, wait. I also need a thousand dollars. This guy can help me out.
Stav
When did he send this?
Friend 1
Call him?
Stav
Yeah, he needs to be okay. Well, by the time this comes out, it'll be quite. Just be like, look man, we're covering this on a few. You should text him and be like, look, we're covering this on a future episode. Do not give this guy money.
Eldis
Yeah.
Stav
I mean, because this is insane.
Eldis
Definitely just either. Most likely just not going to get the ticket.
Stav
Right.
Eldis
Just stay there and be like, oh, I have $1,000, baby. Like, I can give you drugs.
Stav
Yeah.
Friend 1
The round number of $1,000 that he needs.
Stav
Wrong, eldest. Look up Eldis. Look up flight to Costa. Costa Rica to Atlanta.
Eldis
I guarantee it's like $400.
Friend 2
I did it. I did it one summer for like four or five hundred dollars. That's round trip during summer.
Stav
So this is probably a 250 ticket season. Yeah.
Friend 1
I want to know how they're friends.
Stav
Yeah.
Friend 1
Like how does a guy who sounds like this get wrapped up with.
Stav
Well, I don't want to say. My knee jerk reaction is that he's in love with him. You know what I mean? Like a very kind gay guy.
Friend 1
Why would you say that?
Stav
Sounding guys in love with some straight train wreck. It's a classic kind of like trashy.
Friend 1
Yeah, he sounds trashy.
Stav
Friendship, you know what I mean? Oh, yeah. This guy who's a. The Costa Rica.
Friend 1
Yeah, the guy in Costa Rica.
Stav
Yeah. He probably got himself a nice wife.
Eldis
You know, he does sound hot. You want to imagined him as a attractive person.
Friend 2
He's like, yeah, I'm gonna Go teach English in a surf town known for just a bunch of young, like, yeah. Beach bums going there and off.
Stav
Yeah, that's where. When you. When you have a cocaine problem, you want to go to a vacation town in South America. That's where you clean off of cocaine.
Eldis
When I. Whenever I'm trying to get off cocaine, I go right to South America.
Stav
So, I mean, that's my one. That's a possible guess. Maybe this guy's not even gay. He's just southern. But. And he could just be a really nice guy. He's clearly somebody with guilt. He's already feels guilty for not giving him the thousand dollars. Like, buddy, you're out of your mind. This is. Yeah. Good thing you're in. You're in therapy and working on this. Wait, are you texting him right now?
Friend 2
I'm definitely gonna forget if I don't do it. This.
Stav
I can do it right now.
Eldis
So funny. Right now.
Stav
Yeah, but this is so important that I think we need to do it. But yeah, I mean, this is just. Like, we know this. This guy clearly has some kind of. He. This, our caller comes from some kind of horrible, like, background where there's some kind of shitty parent that constantly asks you stuff and guilts you and he's attracted.
Eldis
Because it's not even a family member. There's no, there's no other bond beyond just two people being friends that he feels this kind of like, oh, I should. It's like, this guy is an adult. He can get himself a plane.
Stav
Also, this guy, what do you do? He save you from a burning.
Eldis
That's what I'm saying.
Stav
Like, look, if he saved your life, maybe give him the thousand dollars and never speak to him again. But if he didn't, if he did anything short of saving your life, don't give him the money.
Eldis
Easy out. No, I'm sorry. Oh, he knows about the inherited money.
Stav
I mean, that's the thing, dude, this is fucking. Yeah. You know the answer.
Friend 1
And you're not helping your friend by giving him the money.
Stav
That's actually.
Friend 1
You're enabling him.
Stav
That's a great point too, because he's also just lying to you and he's gonna buy cocaine and he's trying to get enough cocaine to be able to his wife for three more weeks before she sends him away.
Eldis
So true. It's. It's also just not even if he did come back and clean himself up, which is not going to happen.
Stav
Right.
Eldis
It's still messy.
Stav
Like, it's so weird and not your fault. Not your problem. And by the way, I don't believe a single thing this guy said.
Friend 1
No.
Stav
Does he. Is any of this true? Did he go to speak to teach English? Probably not. Is even married? Probably not. Like, is this really. This. This woman forced him to do drugs? That's what happened. And he's on the street now and he needs a thousand dollar plane date because he wants to go right away. Offer to buy him the plane ticket directly. See how he fucking. How his behavior changes.
Eldis
There you go.
Stav
Offer to be like.
Eldis
When you're like actually like someone on the street. Like, yeah, I'll get you some.
Ryan
Fuck you.
Stav
So, yeah, this. This is crazy. You're a sweet guy. Don't do this. Do not give this guy any money. You. And he's like. He's even like, I couldn't in the past, but now I can. I know he said that. That it's like, dude, no.
Eldis
It's really sweet.
Stav
He's a sweet guy.
Eldis
You're gonna be my friend and I want to take advantage of him.
