This episode of Stylish is brought to you by Nespresso and their new Vertuo up Coffee Machine Press to explore a world of coffee possibilities.
A
Remember how last week I introed the show? Well, I'm back to do that again.
B
You're doing amazing.
A
This is Stylish, the podcast for all things fashion, lifestyle, brand and beauty. Except I can't do it off my heart, actually.
C
I think always forget one word.
A
Yeah, same.
B
I always add in a random word.
A
Oh, what works. What do you want to add today?
C
Oh, cleaning.
A
Yes, I like that one. I'm joined by Ana Kijoshi Smith and Naima Fatima. And I'm Joanna Fleming. And today we're going to be chatting about a lot of different things, mainly skin. Now, I want to start off by talking about the World cup because some very interesting things have been happening in the brand world. Yeah. Especially with Levi's. I really loved this moment from Levi's and you actually brought this to the forefront, Naima. So I want to get your take on all of this stuff that's been happening.
B
Well, as you know, we're obviously a sports podcast, so we had to cover this today. Top of the charts for sports. I saw this earlier in the week and I love stuff like this. I love cheeky marketing. I love when people find a little way around. So FIFA at the World cup, there's like official sponsors. Costs a lot of money to be an official sponsor. What they ask of brands that exist there, they have to remove their logos if they're not an official sponsor. So. So, you know, there's stadiums that are named after certain brands. There's obviously condiments that are in these stadiums that have the brands. There's players with headphones on that also have brands written on them. And FIFA actually has asked all of these brands to cover up their logo. So what actually started this was Levi's stadium, which is in San Francisco, had to cover up their logo and they actually put like a big white, like a top over it and then they
A
had a bit of a rollout.
B
So they changed their Instagram logo to like the covered up version of the logo and they like rolled it out across multiple different stores.
A
I think the funny part about that as well, though is that they so neatly tucked the top around. You know how Levi's has a really distinctive shape to their logo. It's almost like the Batman shape.
C
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
A
And so you could clearly tell it was Levi's.
B
Yeah.
A
Even though you couldn't see the word.
C
I just Thought this was hilarious. Like, honestly, it's genius. It's reverse marketing in all the right ways. Like, imagine being a brand spending what, in excess of hundreds of millions of thousands of dollars. I don't know what the figure was, but it's so genius to actually then go and create this iconic rollout, making it like your logo is so iconic. It shows that your brand can be more than just a name. And that symbol, like you said, Jo, people know it, it's recognizable. So then to go out and roll it out, put it on your storefronts, put it on your social media, it's like the biggest piss take. But also free sponsorship and free marketing that's getting more exposure, I think, than the actual brands who have probably paid.
B
I took a screenshot of the caption when they like captured it. Sorry, I've got it on my phone. But it actually, it's just. As a social media girl, it's the best caption ever. Welcome to the world's most beautiful redacted stadium.
C
I love it. And then I think the chatter that has then come from this online, like Gillette responding, bing, bang, yes, they got us too. And then they covered their logo in shaving cream. And I'm like, this is so comical. But they, this is getting my attention. I'm more into these brands than the brands that, I'm sorry, can't even tell you what these brands are that have paid big bucks.
A
I actually don't, couldn't name a sponsor, but I can name all of these brands. They're calling this the Streisand effects. BBC reported that they're calling this a Streisand effect because it's a phenomenon that happened when Barbara Streisand tried to remove photos of her house from the Internet. And then more people ended up seeing them because everyone was like, why are you trying to hide from us?
B
What are you.
C
It's just like that human psychology, like, you want what you can't have. I want to see, I want to know more, I want to be involved in that. I don't really care about all these other brands. And it's actually quite funny how bootleg though, some of the COVID ups have been like, they put sticky tape on Heinz bottles, sticky tape. Like, guys, it's a multimillion dollar sport and we're putting sticky tape and boxes over our condiments.
B
And then they made the PR press rollout. Heinz actually made like a press rollout where they put the sticky tape over their bottles. I actually think like the marketing teams in these Businesses must be like, this works. The stuff we've been doing for years, it's working. Everyone's been asking us for roi. Look at this brand recognition.
C
It's also just wild to me because it's like, it's called Levi's Stadium, so how do you expect to cover that up? Levi's Stadium.
A
You would think that they've paid enough money for to have their stadium called Levi's Stadium.
B
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
A
You think that would be enough. But apparently when the World cup comes along, it's not.
B
It's redacted stadium now.
A
Yeah, exactly. All right, let's jump into the swap. Annika, do you want to go first? You're sitting in a different seat today, and it's really thrown me.
C
I know we're playing musical chairs here at Stylish, and it's actually quite fun. It's like a little hot potato, hot seat. Something I love about my job. So anyone who doesn't know what I do, I work in wholesale fashion and I work with a lot of emerging brands, and we like to kind of bring them to the forefront, give them a platform to help expand their market share in different regions. And a brand that I have had my eye on is a brand called Tisa.
A
And.
C
And they are really. They're two beautiful girls, and they have just kind of taken their culture. It's all about east meets west design. And they've incorporated the classic sari, but reimagined it with a modern lens. And I just love this because I don't know if you guys know this, but I'm actually half Indian. My family's from Punjab up in the north of India. And for me, seeing my culture blended in such a modern way, that still, like, shows cultural appreciation and still shows our roots and, like, what's really important and traditional to our culture through a modern lens is so beautiful. And I think what's really cool as well, just seeing these two girls bring their culture to the forefront, but actually having a really curated concept and now the recognition that they're getting from so many Westerners as well, it's just beautiful to see they've executed their brand in a really, really cool way. And it's again, just like the really classic saree. So have you guys worn a saree before?
A
I've just done a live Google of this brand. I love.
B
I love this brand.
C
Isn't it stunning?
B
There's a DM in their TikTok, like from when they had 5,000 followers or something from me. Cause I wanted to wear them to Australian Fashion Week and they weren't like, they hadn't got the stock yet. I literally, like, the second I saw it pop up on my for you page, I DM them and I was like, hello, I would like to buy one today.
C
Isn't it stunning? I love that. And I think as well, like, Naima, like, you will know this as well, probably from when you put a sari on. It is quite intricate. It's the drapery.
B
The hardest job in the world.
C
Oh, my gosh. Like, honestly, I'm the worst. And even, like, my mum and I, when we put saris on, like, we literally have to, like, help pin each other. And there's just like such an art
A
to it, which I've done.
C
So if you're invited to an Indian wedding or if you just want to celebrate our culture, I think this brand is a really beautiful way to do that.
B
Bonus rack one of the owners, her Vogue wedding feature.
D
Yes.
B
Oh, my God, her wedding was so incredible. But she made individual outfits for each of her bridesmaids and they're like, similar to the style of this brand.
A
Okay, we're gonna have to link that in the episode.
B
Yeah, I reckon we post the carousel of it. It's so incredible. And it's such a beautiful.
A
You do social. Yeah, I'll do it.
B
I thought her wedding was such a beautiful blend of, like, her two cultures and also with her partner. I remember when I saw it on my feet stopped, I was like, this is beautiful.
C
So beautiful. Yeah, I actually kind of envisioned this for you.
B
Oh, thank you.
C
Take some notes.
B
I'll message her.
A
All right, what's your swap nightmare? I've got two.
B
I'm so sorry. One is just an announcement that Vintage has launched in Australia. Lucy, head of podcast, was very excited about this because whenever she goes back home to London, she like, buys stuff ahead of time and like, orders it to her parents house. It's really, really good. There's no seller's fee, so you keep 100% of the money that you make. And they're also running a deal at the moment where there's free shipping from the uk. Oh, so very good. And also a lot of the time famous people from the UK also put up their clothes on it. So a tip for the girlies who love secondhand clothes. Number two, I've got a creator called Talia Madden. She is a TikTok creator and she does interiors. I have just moved apartments and I have moved into like a little bit of a. I really love our apartment, but it's Quite new.
A
It's a new build.
B
My aesthetic isn't quite like a new build apartment. I quite like eclectic things in my home. And sometimes when you put it in there, it just looks a little bit, like, out of place, in my opinion. But she has such good tips around decorating your space. And she introduced me to the word patina, which is like, you kind of need things in your space that have a bit of, like, rust or like a bit of lived in feeling.
C
This is my house. It's covered and spit up.
A
Yeah,
B
yeah. Poppy knows patina.
C
Poppy knows patina.
B
But it's like she has this good approach where it's like, I think a lot of people go, I want to warm up a space, but if the space itself isn't like a warm wooden or like a brownstone or like an older house, that'll look kind of weird in there. So she's kind of reframes it and goes, add softness. And I was like, that's such a good. Nice. Like a nice way to think about decorating my space. And she has really good recommendations on where to find art, including search terms.
A
I need that. I actually need that because I need to buy art for my house because we've got a lot of bare walls right now. I'm like, the art that I had from my old place, I'm like, it's barely, you know. Yeah, it's covering one room.
B
She also gave me personally, my close friend. No, she also gives really good tips on, like, framing. She'll be like, oh, maybe you don't have to go all the way to the edge. Add in, like some paper in the background. This is the level that you need to hang your art at. Ooh, I'm gonna follow her for sure. Yeah.
C
This is a great shout out. It actually reminds me of this concept called Wabi Sabi. I've got this book called Wabi Sabi. Welcome. It's one of my favorites. And it's all about, like, appreciating things just for as they are. So it's like at home when your flowers droop and maybe the petals fall.
B
Yeah.
C
I love that you would naturally pick them up, but it's all about appreciating them, just being there. So when you come to my house and it's an absolute bomb. Appreciate everything. Just being there.
B
It's actually purposeful.
C
It's intense.
A
We've both done an extra swap today.
B
Now it's your turn.
A
Now it's my turn. I've only got one. Uh, but you never know. I might Throw in another one later. So I love to throw a little random recommendation in here that has no relation whatsoever to the genres of Here We Go. Mine is a TV show and it actually, I came up with this swap because we got a DM on Stylish Socials the other day and someone was addressing Maddie, but then they were saying, I'm actually on a walk listening to true crime. So I guess I'm also addressing Joe. Yes, you are. So I have a police drama to recommend to you. It is called Blue Lights. It's on sbs. It is an Irish police drama. It's got three seasons and they're all on sbs. I think it's also maybe on Stan or something, but they've only got two of the seasons and I found all of them on sbs and I think there's another one coming out in September. I love this show. It's really, really good. There's like, there's a love story in there. There's like, there's a lot of drama that goes on. It's a very good show. So if you're into like crime adjacent, like police dramas, UK crime dramas, this would be right up your alley.
C
Yeah, I'm so into this. I'm into like gangster shit when it comes to like my teaching.
A
Oh, you might like this.
C
I might be into this.
A
Yeah.
C
Yeah. I've just finished a lot of Harlan Corbin's Netflix series.
A
I did not pick that for you.
C
Okay.
A
I know, you've surprised me. Yeah, you should get onto this.
C
I'm full of tricks over here. And the image teach. Yeah.
A
All right, well, today we're talking all things winter skincare, which is obviously my area of expertise. We've asked some of our favorite creators and industry professionals for their best tips, tricks, recs, advice. We've got some audio snippets from them and we also got some input from you, our audience, on some of your favorite winter skin products. But that's going to be after a word from today's sponsor.
B

Thank you so much to Nespresso for making this episode of Stylish possible. I am so excited about this episode because I feel like I get like a session with you in the room for me. I know I'm getting a console, but like we mentioned, we've got a few voice notes to go through from people in the industry. We've polled you guys as well. But before we actually get into it, we've got our resident skin expert here, Jo, and I'd love for you to give us a bit of a rundown about why winter actually impacts our skin.
A
I appreciate the fact that we've got the creators voice notes. Gives me a chance to like have a sip of my drink between me talking. So dry skin in winter. Look, this is a very common concern that I have clients coming to me with at the moment. Like a lot of people are saying my moisturizer isn't quite cutting it for me. I'm feeling really dry. What I often say is like, how do you describe that feeling of being dry? Are you flaky or are you feeling quite tight after you've cleansed in the shower? And then when you're jumping out before you do your skincare, you're feeling like a little bit of discomfort, maybe even like tingling because your skin's feeling so tight. So I'm often having these conversations. What's kind of important to set this up is understanding that dry skin lacks oil, dehydrated skin lacks water. And these are two different concerns. So dry skin is a skin type and people that have a tendency towards being a little bit drier, like me, I would say that I'm normal to dry in terms of my skin type. So when winter rolls around, I experience more of those dryness symptoms. So I can experience, you know, a bit of flaking, bit of rough texture, those types of things. But our oily skins can also experience dehydration. So you may be experiencing signs of dehydration rather than signs of dryness during winter. And we can often experience that dehydration because humidity drops quite significantly in the winter months, especially if you're somewhere very cold like Melbourne, Our indoor heating is absolutely the worst for your skin. And then like sharp changes in temperature, you know, you might be in a really hot office like we are right now, and then walk outside into like blistering cold winds. I'm sure the people that are living on the Gold coast and listening to this can't relate hot showers as well. Stripping away your natural oils, they can all impact your barrier function. And so our barrier is what creates, creates this bricks and mortar kind of protection from external irritants, bacteria, pollutants, and it stops your moisture from escaping. And when that barrier is impaired from a variety of reasons, like I just mentioned that low humidity, indoor heating, etc, all of those things kind of impacting your skin, we can then start to experience those signs of dryness or dehydration. And that could be things like delayed healing, it might be flaking, it might be sensitivity, it might be redness, it could be breakouts. There's lots of ways that an impaired barrier can show up or signs of dehydration and dryness can show up. So it's very important that we support our skin more when it's impaired. And so over winter, you might have to do a bit more TLC for your skin than you would in summer. Like in summer you might just slap on whatever and it works well, but in winter you kind of slap on whatever and it's like, oh, that, that's not working for me. My makeup is not sitting the way that it normally does. So sometimes cutting back on the actives is worthwhile. Selecting appropriate formulas for your skin type or opting for different ingredients during winter. So we're going to go through all of that kind of stuff together today and get the input from our creators as well. We ask some of our creators what they change about their skincare routines during winter and the issues that they face with their skin. Our first answer is from beauty content creator Claire Bridget. I'm going to play that for you now.
E
I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way, but I feel like a shriveled up raisin in winter because my skin gets super dehydrated, making my pores and fine lines look 10 times worse. So because of this, I focus on my skin barrier and hydration. Always, always love a milky toner as my first step after cleansing. And on that note, always making sure I'm using a cleanser that isn't going to strip my skin, especially in winter.
A
I love those tips from Claire because sometimes that cleanser that you use in summer, you might be using a foaming cleanser or a gel and it really does strip the skin too much in winter if you are experiencing a little bit of an impaired barrier. So opting for a milky or creamy cleanser could be a really good option. And also just throwing an extra milky toner in there to your existing routine can just help to offset those signs of dryness a little bit more. Makeup artist Yarn Don also weighed in and he actually suffers from eczema is what he had to say.
F
My biggest skin concern in winter is definitely dryness and itchiness. I have eczema prone skin so heaters, hot showers and the colder weather can really strip my skin skin. The biggest change I make is switching to a richer, more emollient moisturizer and I still layer my hydrating products underneath. But that thicker moisturizer really helps to lock everything in and supports my skin barrier throughout the day.
A
He knows what's up. And then we have Michelle, a makeup artist who goes by Gucci paints on socials. If you don't already follow Michelle, you'll absolutely love looking at her work. She oh, and her own skin. Beautiful. So she's shared a snippet with us as well.
D
The first thing I'll always do in winter when I'm changing up my skincare routine is address my cleanser. I find that in summer I can get away with the cleansing oil and then a nice gel cleanser to just get a deeper clean. But in winter I really just can't do that. I will just stick with my oil cleanser and I'll double cleanse with that instead. And of course in the morning, for me personally, I don't really like to wash my face with any cleanser at all. I just like to use water. I will point out I'm not super breakout prone so I don't find I really need a deep cleanse in winter.
A
It's funny, a lot of clients say to me, should I be cleansing in the morning? I'm not cleansing in the morning. Oh, sorry, I don't cleanse in the morning. I'm like, I don't care if you
C
cleanse in the morning, it's optional.
B
Live your life.
A
As long as you're cleansing at night, I don't give a shit lots about cleansers.
B
I wasn't expecting that.
A
Do you change your cleanser up? I'm Keen to know what you guys experience in winter in terms of your skin.
B
I haven't thought about my cleanser as much as I should be. Apparently, I just stick to the same one, but maybe that's what's contributing to the dryness, actually, the dehydration. I've learned the difference between the two words now, so thank you for teaching me that.
A
Do you think that's what you're experiencing?
B
Yeah, for sure.
D
Yeah.
B
I don't have. I think that, like, flaky kind of thing that you were saying, that I don't experience that. Whereas I just feel quite tight.
A
Yeah.
B
In my skin.
A
Yeah.
B
So dehydrated.
A
Yeah.
B
So maybe that's something that I need to look into for my routine. But, yeah, I would say overall, very dehydrated skin over this time of year, I'm definitely similar.
C
But I think I find as well, and I think because I'm also currently breastfeeding, that I'm extra dry. Like, when Claire dropped in about looking like a shriveled pr, I completely relate. I just feel so tight. And because also, like having a newborn in the house, our air conditioning and heating is always on. Like, the house is set to 23 at all times, just for her comfort. And I find myself, like, just so dry, especially through, like, my nasal area and around my mouth. And I've actually changed up my cleansing quite a bit. I've been using my oil cleanser. I usually double cleanse, but I've actually stopped doing it in the morning. I really just focus on more hydrating and more nourishing products. And something I do every single winter is I'll go and pay a visit to my trusted skin specialist, Mel at Studio Wang, and she will kind of just tell me what I should focus on and what I shouldn't. And I think it's so easy to think I need to put on more products, but she actually told me, you're doing the right thing. Let's actually strip it back and focus on just what your skin needs. And I found that to work really well for myself.
A
Yeah. A lot of people don't apply. The less is more.
C
Yeah. And I think you'll easily go, oh, shit, I've got to slap more on because it's so cold out, so it's got to be thicker and more products. But then, now, correct me if I'm wrong, but is that going to create potentially, like, more clogged pores and then
A
again, just increase congestion depending on what your concerns are and what your skin type is? Absolutely. Like layering on more stuff could then present more issues. It's funny that you mentioned that lower face as well because that's a really common area to experience perioral dermatitis. And so when you start getting very impaired around that area, then that can obviously increase your chances of developing something like that, which can become quite a chronic thing to deal with. Okay.
B
And I feel like when I get sick, like if I have a cold, that's kind of the first.
A
Yes.
B
We're not on video, but I'm pointing to my nose and mouth area. But I feel like that's the first place I experience a lot of dryness.
E
Yeah.
B
So true about the heater. We work in an office with 20 something women, so the heater is always on and it's normally on at about 25 degrees. And same with my house. I'm pretty like because I haven't gotten the new a bill at this new place. I'm the same. I haven't had a bill yet. So I get up and go here on and just that's me at the moment. The house is hot, so I'm blasting a lot of heat onto my face.
A
It's not even just the heat. It's the fact that like that type of heating and air conditioning going all the time strips all of the humidity out of the air so there's like no moisture in the air.
B
Perfect me every five seconds. But I think for that I've kind of changed up my moisturizer going for like more of a thick one. I know that probably goes against what you were just saying, Annika, but I've just swapped it out. So I normally just go for like a cerave like moisturizer. But I have gone into a thicker, more hydrating moisturizer which is the Kiehl's Ultra facial cream with Squalane. I will say really expensive. So I apologize in advance. It is $142, but I've been on a bit of a TikTok rabbit hole and I've read it Rabbit hole. Tried to find a few dupes but apparently the go to very useful facial cream. The Mecca Max Thirst Impression. Thirst impression. That's funny. Thirst Impression Priming Hydrating moisturizer and the Nivea Soft moisturizing cream are all really good swap outs and significantly less money.
A
Speaking from my experience, also the Laneige Water bank moisturiser. Yes, there you go.
B
Talking about products, we actually also asked our creators, our judging panel what their hero products for winter are. We're going to start off with Claire. This is what she had to say.
E
That's actually so easy. La Roche Posay Cicaplast Balm B5 Plus I preach it so much on my socials. This is a godsend. It's the best multi purpose product. I kind of think of it like a skin barrier repair balm, but I personally use it as a thicker nighttime moisturizer when my skin is feeling dry, irritated and sensitive. It's even so great on those dresses. Dry, flaky spots of skin so many people get in winter.
B
You guys on social also loved this. I think it was like 30% of the answers of people's hero products.
A
That's a lot.
B
Yeah.
C
It's so interesting because I have the reverse effect. Like it actually makes me break out.
A
Interesting.
C
Yeah.
A
So I actually like that you say that because Claire made a good point in her voice note of when she uses it. It's when her barrier is impaired or she's really dry or for flaky spots. Some people use it as an ongoing moisturizer and they've got the wrong skin type for it. So really dry, more mature skin could probably get away with using it as a nightly moisturizer with no issues. But if you're more of a congestion prone combination to oily skin, it's not really going to be the right fit for your skin type. So unfortunately it's one of those like, you know, it's very TikTok popular and I love Cicaplast like and I've got a drier skin so I can tolerate it as like a repair balm. And where my barrier is impaired and post procedure as well, I like to use it. But it's just not getting too caught up in these TikTok trends where you're buying things that aren't appropriate for you.
C
Totally.
B
I'm definitely guilty of that. Next up we've got Yarn's hero product,
F
Byoma's rich moisturizing cream. My skin just drinks it up in winter. It's really nourishing without feeling heavy. And because my skin is eczema prone, I love that it focuses on supporting the skin barrier while keeping my skin hydrated for longer.
A
Great brand. I love the price point of this brand. I've actually swapped in their milky toner before and their barrier repair treatment I think I spoke about as well, which is in purple packaging. That's also a great product for dryer skins.
B
And we've got Michelle's as well at the moment.
D
I'm loving the airy day night rain sleep mask. The texture of this mask is rich and hydrating, but it's not sticky at all. So I love it on top of my skincare at night. And when my skin feels a little bit tight, I usually lather it all over the face. And if my nose or mouth is feeling a bit dry and irritated, I focus on those areas and I pop
A
a really generous layer on Another great tip. Love these creators, all of them. When we asked you guys what your Hero products were, the LaRoche Cicaplast P5 was obviously number one. We then had the Go To Face Hero. Have either of you use this product?
B
I love the Go To Face Hero.
C
It's so beautiful on the skin, isn't it?
A
Yeah, it is a really nice product. The Road Barrier Butter. The Avenecicle Fate Restorative Protective Cream. And then the Summer Fridays Jet lag. Jet lag.
C
March jet lag.
B
Huge fan of that one.
C
That one goes so hard on my skin.
B
Yeah, she's using it as a moisturizer sometimes. No, I am.
A
If you're drier, you definitely can. I've used all of these products and all are very suitable for dryness for sure. What I'm not identifying here is any products that are really designed specifically for dehydration in isolation. So we're going to talk a little bit more about that. Our community's favorite dry skin lip balm was the Dermal Therapy 1. This is a goodie. I'm not surprised by that. Someone also said that they love the dermal therapy nappy balm. I think you mentioned a nipple balm before Annika, but someone said the nappy balm. This is a 15.4% zinc oxide and 5% panthenol cream. This person says, I swear I'm glowing. And look. I'm not surprised. That is a very similar ingredient. Makeup, I would say, or concept to the sicker plus B5.
C
Gotcha.
A
Yes. So I'm not surprised that that is is working wonders. And someone also said that Vaseline has saved their dry eyelids. Another very common concern in winter. And that's often like the start of dermatitis on the eyelids. And so having that just supported with a barrier product can really help that skin to recover and stop getting irritated. Even things like makeup can irritate the eyes, especially in like a drier, more dehydrating environment. What are your guys favorite products? What I'm probably reaching for the most in terms of moisturiser at the moment is the Astura ATO barrier 365 CRE, which is a really Nice moisturising product. Really great for barrier function. I'm using quite a few of the Bioderma Hydrobio range. What are yours? What are your products?
C
I have literally been using different types of face mist religiously in winter, and I've just been finding that it's really helping with absorption whenever I go between my products. So I kind of like to do a really nice layer of misting. I'm that girl in the office that's just constantly misting her face. I just find it super soothing and like, very Zen of me as well.
A
That is a good way to address the feelings of dehydration. Like, if you're feeling quite tight during the day, having a little mist on your desk is a good idea.
C
Honestly, look at me, you guys. I'm a skin pert now.
D
Is that it?
C
Skin pert skin expert. I don't know. Anyway, but the brand that I'm using a lot is the Road Glazing mist. Like, guys, it really is that good. It's $52, so it is a bit of an investment. But it is such a good product. I love using it between my makeup, between my skin care on top of my skincare and makeup. And then another one that I really like to use is MV the Ro Mist, and it's $48. It has a really beautiful scent, but it's such a great, like, just calming smell as well. How about you?
B
Naima Ultra Facial Cream. For me, I absolutely love it, but we've already talked about that. But I can talk about a habit that I try to do more, which is drink more water.
A
Oh yeah, that is a good one.
B
So just I think upping the amount of water that I am having, I think it kind of has to come from within too. So I think in conjunction, I just feel so, like dehydrated in general. So I think obviously I can put lots of things on my skin, but I do also need to look after myself in that element too.
C
I love that.
A
I wanted to talk about that kind of experience with both dryness and dehydration and differentiating between those concerns so that you can address them more successfully and that you'll see a bit more result out of your skincare. So lots of my clients with dehydrated skins are using just a facial oil to try and combat some of those concerns that are related to like feeling tight and uncomfortable and those types of things. And then coming to me and being like, why is my skin feeling more congested? I'm having more enlarged pores. I'm getting more breakouts, I'm getting more blackheads. And so that's where it's important to identify what ingredients are in your products and make sure that you're addressing both things at the same time. So for our drier skin, we want to tick off more of our emollient and occlusive ingredients. So that would be things like Ceramides Squalane, which is in your Ultra facial cream, Jojoba oil, shea butter. And you want them alongside your humectant ingredients like your glycerin, your hyaluronic acid, your panthenol. And then for our dehydrated skins, you want to lean a little bit heavier into those humectant ingredients. So we want to be looking for things like our hyaluronic acid, our glycerin, our centella, our niacinamide, and our panthenol, even phas, our polyglutamic acid, to help with gentle exfoliation, but also hydration at the same time. We still want to lock those things in with a moisturizer on top of if you're using a serum with those ingredients. But it doesn't necessarily have to be something super thick and rich. If you've got an oilier, more congested type of skin, it can be something that's lighter weight.
C
Okay, so next up, we'll be discussing how to combat dull skin this winter. But that will be right after a word from today's sponsor. There are some makeup products that simply cannot be beaten, no matter how many years they've been in our makeup bag. And when it comes to mascara benefit, Bad Gal mascaras will always come out on top. If you're a fan, you'll want to listen to this. Benefit's best selling range has had a glow up at Maya with the Bad Gal Bang Mascara now in Electric purple, Badgal Bounce Mascara in teal and brown, and Hyperliners in teal, midnight brown and black. Better yet, from tomorrow you can get 25% off Lancome in store and online at Miya only for a limited time. TNCs and exclusions apply. Visit maya.com for full terms. A huge thank you to MHI' Ya for making this episode of Stylish possible.
A
Michelle gave us a really good tip for combating dull winter skin and bringing back brightness to her complexion over winter. So we'll play that for you if
D
you're going somewhere in winter and you just need that little boost in the skin to brighten it up. I love the tier two ceramic milk ampoule. It's basically glass skin in a bottle. When you don't have time for your vitamin C or retinol or exfoliate to kick in. I just think no matter what state your skin is, I think it gives you this gorgeous glassy glow on the skin and it has these reflections, adaptive properties in there. And it's a beautiful skincare product as well. It's super hydrating.
A
I have to agree with her on that. That is a really nice product. My tip for restoring radiance in winter is to not forget about exfoliation. But you don't have to go heavy on the exfoliants. You don't have to be using like a physical scrub. You could be using a gentle chemical exfoliant with mandelic acid, for example. Or you could use something like the Aspect fruit enzyme mask, which uses enzymes to exfoliate instead. So you can still do these gentle forms of exfoliation to make sure you're still turning over your skin cells. Because the problem with dryness is that you get all these dead skin cells kind of building up on the skin surface and then you apply all these hydrating ingredients and they can't really penetrate the skin as effectively. So exfoliating regularly really helps to improve your hydration.
B
Overall, I'm a big fan of the Paula's Choice 2% BHA. I find that whenever I use that, the next day when I am putting on my moisturizer, I do think it, like sinks in more. And I also think my makeup sits better.
C
Y. Yeah, Nice.
A
Probably does. I feel like this flows on nicely to prepping your skin for makeup in winter. We actually asked makeup artist Claire and Yan how they prep their skin for winter. We've got those for you now.
E
Okay, so I'm about to put you on because for context, I've been living between Australia and Japan this year, and my Japanese friend gave me the best skincare tip that all the Japanese girls do. To get that glass looking skin. Instead of one layer of hydrating toner, they do multiple. My friend actually puts on nine layers, which seems really crazy. But everyone here has glass skin. And since doing this personally, my makeup has never received so many compliments. But as a pro makeup artist, people don't realize nine times out of ten, when they're complimenting my foundation, they are actually complimenting the skin underneath, which is entirely true in this case.
A
I love that that's working, working well for Claire. But I do think the more that you layer underneath, the more chance that you have of being like, oh, my foundation is Slipping off. But if it sinks in, well, then do as many layers as you feel you need to do.
C
That's an expensive habit. Like, I've been using the Rhode Milky Toner, the glazing milk, and I'm just thinking nine layers of that would be so expensive.
A
That is a lot.
B
It's the whole bottle.
A
Yeah.
C
Okay, interesting. I mean, look, I'm going to try it tomorrow, so we'll see.
A
Now to Jan's tip.
F
I've been using Paula's Choice's new 1% BHA Gentle Exfoliating Gel Toner. Say that 10 times a couple times a week because it's designed for sensitive redness prone skin. It helps lift away those dry, flaky patches. So my skincare absorbs better and my makeup sits much smoother. I also love that it's gentle enough for my eczema prone skin. So I get the benefits of exfoliation without feeling stripped or irritated.
A
I actually recommend that product all the time because sometimes the 2% is a little bit too much for sensitised skin. Or if we've got other actives in the mix or we're like introducing a retinoid for the first time, having that 1% BHA from Paula's Choice is often a really good option.
B
I didn't know that was a 1%.
A
Yeah, there is, there's a sensitive.
B
I love that.
A
Yeah. I would say ease up on the powder during winter. Like, you won't necessarily need a finishing powder. If you're finding that you're getting quite dehydrated throughout the day and you're getting a bit flaky and your makeup separating, then you might be better off with like a finishing mistake instead of a powder over the top. My other hack would be don't just slap your foundation straight on your skin. That's obvious. Like, you don't necessarily need a primer, but having a nourishing moisturiser that's suitable for your skin type is going to stop dehydrated skin going. Looking for those humectant ingredients in your foundation and kind of absorbing those ingredients and then leaving a patchy finish on the surface.
C
Right. So interesting. I've actually tried to stop wearing foundation in winter and I think it's probably because I am probably doing a lot of my base maybe wrong. I do have combination skin, so sometimes I do opt for like more nourishing products and with the combination that I usually do, it might be slipping and sliding around. But what I've actually been loving and sorry guys, this is again another Expensive wreck. But the combo of the road glazing milk and by Terry brightening CC serum, that's all I've been wearing lately. And I might put a little bit of like concealer on just in those like spots that need a little bit more life. But it really, really does a good job at that instant glow and like that's what I've got on today and I find it just sits really nicely on my face and does kind of the heavy lifting for me with the glow.
B
Yeah, I reckon I'm similar to you, going for more of that like glowy base and then when all else fails, I just go heavy on the blush.
A
Yeah.
B
Because then I just feel very alive. So focusing less on my face and more on a pink blush.
A
More attention away.
B
Yeah.
A
And finally we asked Jan how to manage eczema during winter. A skin condition that often flares up in the colder months. Here's what he had to say.
F
Whenever my eczema starts flaring up, I strip my routine right back to the basics. I use a gentle cleanser, the Paula's Choice 1% BHA just a couple times a week, a really nourishing moisturizer and sunscreen during the day. I also focus on products that support the skin barrier because a healthy barrier keeps moisture in and irritants out. And I also think it's really tempting to keep adding products when your skin isn't behaving. But what I found that works for me is that keeping things simple and consistent always work best.
A
Eczema can become really problematic during winter. Like a lot of people that have these atopic dry skin conditions will really struggle over the winter months, especially in really like low humidity places like Melbourne in particular. There are a couple of ranges that I often recommend like constantly to clients that have have eczema on their bodies or you know, experience dry patches and itchiness and those types of concerns. The Avenzera Calm range is really good for that. Bioderma's Atoderm range and Laura Jose's Lipicar range. So all of those are your French pharmacy style brands and a lot of them are quite barrier focused. So if you're in chemist, warehouse or Priceline or wherever you are and you're looking for something to use on the body like a shower oil or a rich balm that is going to nourish your skin, those are the ranges that I'd be looking at.
C
I love that I've actually been using the Bioderma body oil in the shower and oh my gosh, even James My husband will talk about how nice his skin feels, which I'm like, okay, sir, he's not a skin guy. He'll use my products. And whenever I do, like, a mask at home, he's like, ooh, lather up.
A
But, you know, it's good if a man's being like, this is good.
E
Yeah.
C
And I was like, okay, we're into this. I was like, good, because I'm gonna keep buying that in bulk. It's like, a really big one. It's worth the money. Like, it's honestly so beautiful on your skin. And I think we actually spoke about this off Mike Naima. But how our skin tones can often go a bit ashy. And I find my legs, in particular, will always go a little bit more ashy, get a bit more dry. Well, not with this product.
B
Yeah. Especially because it's like, I'm not. I'm wearing more pants, so, like, I'm paying less attention. Whereas in summer, I am actually, like, paying attention to my legs more.
A
Do you guys ever take, like, your exercise tights off and you can just see the skin, like, coming off? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Story of my life.
C
There's just. You don't want to know what's going on downstairs with me at the moment, but honestly, it's just. Yeah. Bioderma is all I got to say. Thank you. Thank you, sweetie.
A
Not sponsored. We have not sponsored before, but that is a genuine recommendation.
B
I've got one question for the room. Oh, yeah, One last question. Are we all on tinned fish talk? Sardine talk.
A
My husband is.
B
Yeah. So that's actually something I have been putting into my routine.
A
Okay, again, niche.
B
Yeah, niche.
A
I know.
B
Not niche. It's, like, blowing up on TikTok.
C
I haven't even seen this. So, like, yeah, we are under the rock again.
B
Well, I follow a creator called Tony Bravo, who everyone here should follow. Her Body Care, like, Body Glow routine is incredible. Like, when she does this, like, before and after, and I'm like, the before incredible. And then she's like, oh, no, this is the before, this is the after. And I'm like, whoa, it can look like that. But she got me onto Tin Fish because it's really, really good for your skin because there's lots of Omega 3s, obviously. But then I also found that Anok Yai, who is the Victoria's Secret model, she also had that, like, amazing look at the Met gala with the Swarovski crystals. If you remember, she said that ahead of the Victoria's Secret show. She eats a tin of sardines every single night and she found a huge difference in her skin.
A
So this randomly started putting them on
C
toast and I was like, yum.
A
And then he was putting them.
C
Anchovies on toast.
B
Yeah, anchovies as well. Delicious. Very, very good for skin.
C
I'm a fishy girl. Like, we will have like salmon broth bowls at least once a week. Like maybe sometimes two to three times are the easiest go to. But do you guys feed your dog? Like.
A
Yes, that's what I was gonna say. Cause Adrian started putting sardines in Axel's food.
C
Yes, yes. Miso's coat is really scrumptious and I actually think it's because of his fish intake.
B
They'll be doing the next round of
A
tips your dog, they can come on to talk about fish talk.
B
