This episode of Stylish is brought to you by Maya. Layers, textures and statement coats. Winter has arrived in store and online at Maya.
C
This is Stylish, the podcast for all things fashion, lifestyle, brand and beauty. I'm joined by my lovely co host, Rhiannon Joyce and Joanna Fleming.
B
Ooh, she got it right this week.
A
I know.
C
Past you.
A
Third time's the charm.
C
Oh, not quite. Because my name is Madison Sullivan Thorpe and I also co host this podcast. You know what, there's always next week.
A
Your voice is so distinctive. We know who you are.
C
Thanks, Ray. But if you are a first time listener, welcome, welcome. What has been going on this week?
B
Well, there's lots in the algorithm this week. I tell you what, if I see one more person scrubbing their face with a toothbrush, I'm going to scream.
A
Oh, my Lord, is this my barrier? Hurts thinking about it.
B
Oh, me too. I just wish people would stop spreading this misinformation. I'm like, what in the 2000s, Clarisonic brush is going on here?
C
Clarisonic brush. What a throwback. The chokehold they had on me. I remember working in store at Mecca at the time and they started stocking Clarisonic and me thinking all the Christmases had come at once, that I could redeem my 40% off to buy something to scrub my face and they weren't
B
know what it is. It's like it was a. A self oscillating brush head, like a circular brush head and it was to be used while you cleansed in the shower.
C
Looking back, it could look like something else.
B
It could look like something else.
A
I'm not getting there.
C
I just think the way that Jo was explaining that I was like, oh,
B
oh, the way I positioned it.
C
Yeah.
B
Anyway, not recommended because not great. Fear barrier. Let's not even. Let's not do that.
A
Also, in the skincare algorithm, I saw that Victoria Beckham spoke about her daughter Harper launching a skincare brand. Did you see this?
C
I did. It was a hard one to miss.
A
Yeah, I. I've got feelings about this one.
B
Go on.
A
Harper's 14, Mads. I feel like Harper Beckham is a bit of our Roman Empire. We've had a few chats. Can we wait? Can I break the fourth wall here?
C
Breaker. Right.
A
We did. Maddie and I did our first Fortnightly Friday episode. It was like a pilot episode. We actually spoke about Bran Beckham and Harper was like a key discussion point in that episode. And you and I were going back and forth on what. What are they doing with Harper like, clearly she's the next iteration of brand Beckham. You know, they've made a real conscious effort to not have her. So in the limelight, like, she's definitely there. She attends Victoria Beckham's shows. She's obviously present in some like award ceremonies. Like she presented Victoria Beckham with an award not that long ago. I can't remember what it was, but it was super cute. But she doesn't really done anything. And we were kind of going back and forth saying that we really think that she's either going to launch a campaign. I think it was Marc Jacobs at
C
the time, I think we were like, if we had to pick a brand that she would front, we were like, Marc Jacobs. Daisy would make sense being a friend of baby.
B
That would be really cute. Yeah, really cute. Good call, guys.
C
We thought that was great.
A
But she didn't do that. She actually just decided to go out on her own and launch her own skincare brand. And Victoria Beckham actually dropped this on the Aspire podcast last week. So it's made headlines. It's literally everywhere. 14 year old Harper is launching an acne skincare brand. I will say up top. I've never seen a photo of Harper with acne. And that's not to say that she doesn't have acne. But I feel like if this is your narrative and this is a story that a lot of children, and I'm saying children because she's 14, are experiencing, it feels like I would have seen more of this up top as opposed to just coming out. And also we're coming from her mum feels really interesting.
B
We also look at the comparison of Alex Earl's range that's just launched where her whole narrative basically for the last like three years, I would say has been her battle with acne.
A
Exactly. And that's maybe a bit of recency bias as well. Yeah, like, I'm seeing a lot of that and being like, okay, that's why I expected it just wasn't the move I thought they were going to make.
C
Honestly, I was really quite surprised by this because totally to your point, Ray, I'm with you. And even taking the recency bias into effect, I'm like, you know, Alex Earle is still a grown woman. To make this decision, like, is this going to be her push into the limelight and the spotlight? Because I think about all of the criticism that comes with starting a beauty brand and what Alex Earl herself has faced. I think for me, I'm like, oh my God, is like a 14 or when she launches 15 year old, ready for what the conversation and controversy and potential backlash may be on her. Because I don't think we are a forgiving audience when it comes to. And I say we as a general population are a forgiving audience to anything to do with a celebrity brand.
A
Apparently they've been working on it for two to three years, so they're really playing the longevity piece, saying that this is something she's been working on. The background. Harper came to her mum when she was experiencing, you know, the stress that comes with acne as a teenager. Having been someone who had severe acne growing up, I can completely understand the anxiety that comes with that. Obviously, Harper being in the position that she is incredibly privileged, I'm sure she has access to the best skin technicians, you know, the best products and everything. So, yeah, I. It did surprise me and I agree with you, Mads. I feel like there's going to be a layer of criticism that follows this. One, because she's a celebrity. Two, she is 14. And three, if they make this her first moment, I'm just so curious to see how this plays out.
B
Well, we'll no doubt be covering it on this podcast when it does launch.
A
Absolutely.
B
Having a bit of a deeper look into it now. Ri, you are flying to Sydney?
A
I am.
B
Well, we're recording on Monday, so tomorrow. But when people are listening to this. Yesterday you got there Australian Fashion Week. Tell us what's going on up there with Stylish.
A
I'm so excited. For the first time, Shameless media, Stylish in particular have partnered with Australian Fashion Week and we actually have a formal spot on the roster this year week, where the wonderful Naima and Annika actually leading a panel alongside Bianca Spender. So they're going to be unpacking all the trends that they're seeing. They're going to be doing a bit of a Q and A with Bianca to really understand what the inspiration was and behind her collection, which I also believe is showing Tuesday. So I'm so excited for Naima and Annika to be on this panel because I don't think you could have two better people place to be talking about trends and personal style. So I'm excited to be seeing them. I'll be cheering from the sideline going, woo, go, girls. But yeah, we'll be able to give a bit of a deep dive and a bit of a snapshot of what they cover after. I've got a few assets coming out so we can make sure that we share as much as we can. But I'm Just excited to be in Sydney as well, although the weather's not looking too fab.
C
Well, we're from Melbourne, so I think that you will be okay.
A
Yeah, well. Well, it is quite a nice day today, though.
C
I'm so excited as well, because I feel like this is Annika's, like, 8th or 9th fashion week, so I feel like she's a seasoned veteran, so you've definitely got, you know, boots on the ground. I'm so excited to hear, like, her trend report, both offline and hopefully on. We'll be getting some of that as well. But I feel like she's Wonder Woman right now. She's, like, literally up there already with little baby Poppy and just first flight. Poppy's gonna have more stamps in that passport by, like, year two than I do.
B
And we've got some commentary from Annika in this week's episode as well, which we will get into very shortly. What's on this week's episode, guys? Before we get into the swap.
A
Big bumper episode today, guys. Big, big bumper covering all things winter styling. Aw. Is what we're gonna say. Uh, we're also asking a few industry experts, friends of the pod, who are going to weigh in and share their expertise. We've obviously got our wonderful Annika, who is technically on break at the moment, but we did ask her a little favor, plus a few more who we know and love. We're also going to be talking about the CSB and Alex Earl collab. This has just hit the feeds Monday morning, so we're recording Monday night. So we're getting to it quite quickly. And I'm excited to get into that one because it's just really exciting to see Australian brands absolutely. Kill it on the global stage. And having Alex Earl involved and partnering real active right now, that's pretty major. All right, who wants to go first with the swap?
C
Go, JoJo.
B
Oh, me again.
C
Yeah.
B
Okay. This is gonna be TMI, I'll warn you, but I'm not gonna apologize for that, because I think this is gonna be very helpful to our audience. So I woke up the other morning, and I had accidentally leaked through my pajamas. If, you know, you know, we've all been there. And I was like, damn it, these are my favorite pajamas. They are these beautiful, like, soft. I think the fabric is tencell. Is that what they call it?
A
I don't know.
B
It's like that really soft, like, almost bamboo y kind of texture.
A
Like, breathable. Yeah.
B
It.
A
They're.
B
Oh, they're so comfortable. They're so soft. The Brand is homebody. And I love these pajamas. And I was like, damn it, they're gonna have stains on them now. Like, I really struggle to get blood stains out of clothing. And I'm like, okay, well, these are just done for. They're always gonna have some kind of discoloration. And then I whipped out the CO stain remover and. And I've used this a few times and had quite a lot of success with it. I actually used it on a red wine stain on one of Adrian's shirts the other week, and I was not expecting it to come out. And I was pissed off at him about spilling the wine on the shirt. It was a really nice Cezanne shirt, but I managed to get the red wine stain out anyway. Tried it on my pajama pants, washed them, not a single remnant remaining. Like, you could not even tell that anything was there. I'm like, okay, this shit is legit. I think it's made. They say it's like a foaming enzyme cleaner or spot cleaner, and it's designed to be used on clothes. So. Highly recommend. I just thought I'd drop a cleaning hack in there. It's been a while that need it.
C
Thrilled to have it.
B
There you go. That's mine. Mads.
C
Is it mine?
D
I.
C
Sorry, Mum. If you're listening to this, I did have to buy a Mother's Day gift last minute. Now, my gift to Mum was the activity, but, you know, guilt just got the better of me Sunday morning and I thought, no, I can't physically go without a gift. So I went to Oryton, which I haven't been into for a while. I have shopped their stuff previously, though, and I bought her the most beautiful pale blue cashmere knit. It wasn't cheap. It was definitely like a really nice gestured gift I wanted to give Mum, but the fabrication was absolutely beautiful in all of their knitwear. And I was like, I think we've been sleeping on Oryton a little bit. Anyway, Mum was a massive fan, so I just feel like we've been sleeping. I really wanted to get myself one, but I thought, probably not cute at 31 to be matching with your mum. Jump.
B
Oh, that's cute.
C
Allow it. What is yours?
A
I have a really wholesome swap as well. On Friday night, I spent the night with my mum. It was quite spontaneous. She sent me a text message and was like, I've got a spare ticket to this symphony orchestra. It's like a Candle at Symphony Orchestra. Have you been?
B
Yeah.
A
Oh, my God. I was obsessed with it. It was so cute. So I saw Fleetwood Max Symphony Orchestra with my mum. Went for an hour, 6 till 7pm we went to dinner after. It was such a beautiful night.
B
I've actually been twice.
A
Oh, yeah.
B
I went to an Adele one and then I think I might have also done the Fleetwood Mac one.
C
Oh, amazing.
A
Yeah, they do all different, like, covers, but it's candlelight concerts if you want to Google it. And then they have a full roster of all different ones that you can go to. The one I went to was at Collingwood Town Hall. It was so cute, guys. I loved it. Except I really wanted to have a little. But a little sing along, but it wasn't quite the environment.
C
I've actually always wanted to ask you this and can't believe in the duration of our friendship, I haven't. Are you named after the Fleetwood Map song, Rihanna?
B
Yes, I am.
A
And when I got there, they started their first song of the set was Rhiannon.
C
And I went, ah, it's meant to be.
A
And everyone, like, looked at me like a freak.
B
And I was like, this is my song.
C
And your mum's like, this is her son.
A
It was so cute. I absolutely adored it. So I highly recommend. They're all over Australia and all around the world, I'm pretty sure.
B
So, yeah, it's huge, their reach.
C
I get served paid ads for them all the time. Maybe this is my son to go.
A
Someone said that to me today.
C
Who was it?
A
Oh, I was in a store picking up a dress and they were like, I've been served an ad for that. And I'm like, well, you should go.
B
Yeah.
C
All right, next we're going to be discussing Crop Shop Boutique and Real Actives collab. But that's right after a word from today's sponsor.
B
There's something about winter style that feels a little more intentional. In summer, you can throw on a dress and sandals and call it a day. But winter is when the style obsessed come alive. We get more experimental with layering, we play with textures, and if all else fails, our denim knitwear and statement coats are there to make us look cool with very minimal effort. This is exactly what I love about Maya's new Winter drop. It's centered around real winter wardrobe building. Not just trend pieces you'll wear once, but elevated staples you'll wear time and time again. The campaign is fronted by Bajoura and Olive Taranto, who both have such different personal styles, but show just how versatile winter dressing can be. It's less about following rules and more about finding what works for for you. And when it comes time to shop, Maya is your one and only destination. All of your winter basics, layering elements and statement pieces can be found under one roof from some of the best Aussie and international brands like Mossman, Topshop Only and Veromotor. This winter, build a wardrobe that you genuinely love and feel excited for the season ahead. Shop new arrivals in store and online at Maya. And a huge thank you to Maya for making this episode of Stylish possible.
C
I'm excited to talk about this one. Crop Shop Boutique. Now if you don't know what Crop Shop Boutique is, I'm willing to bet you haven't been to the Gold coast in the last three years. But Crop Shop Boutique is an Australian founded activewear brand. It was founded in 2019 by Rachel Dillon and to say this brand is going off is the understatement of the century.
A
They're everywhere.
C
It was reported by Rag Trader that last year their sales were up 113% year on year. Let me just say in the current economic climate and e commerce world, most businesses would be like snapping a 1.3% rise. Like these numbers are astronomical.
A
I've seen them on like every celebrity as of late. Pedestrian also ran a piece a few weeks ago. They had Dua, Lipa, Hailey Bieber, Kylie Jenner all rocking the Pilates fits. It feels like they're everywhere.
B
We also probably should say as well Crop Shop Boutique also AKA csb. Csb. Yeah, a lot of people might know them as csb, not Crop Shop Boutique, but that was their original name. I don't know if they're now officially csb.
A
I think they are. That's their logo. We can just refer to them throughout the episode from here on out as CSB because I love an acronym. So let's grab on that.
C
Yeah, I love an acronym too. So look, they had an incredible pop up over the weekend in Miami and they did it in collaboration with Alix Earl's Real Actives. Now I would say in terms of social celebrity currency, right now Alex Earl is arguably one of the hottest celebrities and her conversion cannot be denied. Based on every piece of material you will read and the fact that brands have knowingly thrown equity at her rather than giving her a paid fee probably says it all. But they did a really chic Pilates studio takeover in Miami and had all of the activewear matched in Alex Earle's Real Active's colorway.
A
It was so cute. It was like so fresh, so clean.
C
It was so cute and so French. And I actually hadn't seen this until I saw Rach Wild's TikTok on it. So, for those of you who don't know, Rach Wilde is the founder of Australian skincare brand tbh. And she was like, this is probably the best collaboration we've seen from an Aussie brand in some time. And then, you know that kind of thing that happens in the algorithm when you watch something the whole time and then suddenly that's all you get. All I could say after it was that and Alex Earl herself actually attended and then uploaded a photo in that. And I would love to know what the conversion was there. But what were your thoughts when you saw this? Did you guys see it?
B
Well, I assumed, like, this has to have been planned long before real Actives actually came out.
A
Yeah, definitely. So they actually had a partnership together. They did a collaboration in the Hamptons about a year ago, which Rach touched on in the video. But I actually followed Bronte, who's one of the employees for csb. She is a Gold coast girly. She's really great to watch, but behind the scenes of, like, the business. And she builds a lot of her content around her family, but also her work life. And over a year ago, she was the one who did this. She. I think it kind of went semi viral. A video where it was like 24 hours until I meet Alexel, and then it was like every hour showing until she actually had was at the Pop up with Alex. That was really cutie. But that says to me this relationship has been going on for a while. And Rachel also touched on how important it is that these partnerships look like they've been built over time. Yeah. Just from, like, for it to feel really very authentic and meaningful. Yeah. But, yeah, I feel like it was definitely in the works probably since then. I believe that was the first time they'd actually worked together, but there were no deliverables attached to it in that partnership at the time. So they've come a long way and
B
it was, like, highly under wraps, Real Actives. So they must have had quite a close relationship to be sharing that kind of, like, info to be able to do a partnership like that.
A
Did you see the setup? It looked absolutely gorgeous. Have you seen it?
C
It looked so elevated. I felt like this event matched where they're trying to go in the trajectory of where they want to be.
A
I also love that Rachel was highlighting another Australian founder and really lifting her up. And also she spoke a lot in the video about how big of a deal this actually is for an Australian brand. And Left with this really encouraging feel good, honestly video to watch on a Monday morning. If I'm being honest, saying that this could be you. Like, don't ever give up. Like, you, you can do this even if you are a small Australian brand. Like, this is what you can strive to achieve. And I just, I just loved it.
C
How do you feel when you see Aussie brands doing things like this?
A
So much pride. Like, I get really patriotic when I see stuff like this because it's so hard to be Australian founders given how isolated we are, you know, the economic climate and how difficult it is to build a brand in the us We've spoken time and time again on this podcast about how many established brands have gone over and not succeeded. So when they do, it feels good.
B
Agree. Really love the message that she left on that TikTok. All right, now we need to jump into our winter, autumn, winter, autumn, winter.
D
I say.
A
Aw,
B
styling in trends. I guess we've got some input from Arnica and other friends of the show as well to jump into, but we're really relying on these very knowledgeable people in the industry to gather their expertise for this winter styling episode. So let's start with seasonal trends that we're seeing come through. And obviously we're leaning on none other than our very own Annika, because if she was sitting in your seat, Rhiannon Joyce, she would be dishing out this information. She's very generously done some voice notes for us. Now. The trends that we're seeing coming through are trickling down from these big fashion houses like Chanel, ysl. We see these trends on the Runway, they trickle down to the high street and that's what we end up wearing.
C
The people in the everyday people.
A
It just reminded me of the devil I know. I was like so humbled.
B
So she described a lot of what she's seeing at the moment as joyful dressing. So a lot of texture coming through. Faux fur, classic prints, stripes, paisley, animal print, you name it. The pattern is patterning. This year, speaking of pattern, by the way, I got popsy, Adrienne's 91 year old grandma, a little leopard print, faux fur.
A
I saw this on Instagram. So cute.
B
Yeah. She was loving herself. Sick. And she cannot wait to wear it. So she's on trend.
A
She's always been on trend.
B
Yeah. So I'm glad to report this back to her. She doesn't have a mobile phone, so she can't really listen to this, but I'll report back. So something in particular that Annika called out, which I thought was interesting was velvet, which we're going to play for you. Now.
E
We are seeing some really beautiful takes on, like, velvet, which is always, I think, quite autumnal. Also a lot more cord and. And suede. And, you know, I love fringing, so we're always going to see fringing in a lot of our dressing as well. Now, in terms of silhouettes, sharp tailoring is obviously forever when it comes to autumn winter dressing, I'm talking straight and skinnier legs coming through in our trouser pants. Paired back with a little bit more volume up top. I've also seen a lot of colorless blazers coming through.
C
Sitting here in my little colorless place,
B
I'm feeling like I've got the AJS kick of approval.
C
I felt my little grin wide, said that I was like, oh, goody.
B
And we know I'm obsessed with color analysis, so I am very keen to hear what Anika's color predictions are for this season. Re. Can you hear that?
E
For me, I think the palette is just inherently a lot darker, so we're seeing a lot of Burgundy plums wines, purple accents coming through, paired back with pops of red. And we're also seeing quite a bit of blue, so cobalt for something a little bit more sharper and electric. And then cornflower, which is just really beautiful and a little bit more firm, as always. We've got olive and khaki, which are personal faves of mine, and chartreuse accents. Now, I think chartreuse is a color that has been so underrated. Do not sleep on this color. I think whether you're doing it in, like, a full outfit is so beautiful and so fun. Or again, just an accents. And chocolate is obviously forever.
A
I.
C
We love to hear that they say sitting in chocolate.
A
I know we're all quite smug. I have issues with color in winter. I feel like I usually shy away from it, but I found a way to inject it into my wardrobe without it feeling like it's taking over.
B
Go on.
A
Shoes. Oh, yeah. I'm really investing in a pop of color and shoes. I just bought a pair from Ryland Studios, which is a Sydney brand.
B
Yeah.
A
Red and suede. So I've actually ticked two of Annika's boxes today. Go me. Red suede, closed toe. I think they're just going to be perfect for jeans. They're on their way, so I'm really excited. I'm gonna wear them this week straight away.
C
Heel or a flat?
A
A little heel, like, you know, I like a little micro heel for work.
C
Clocky meal Cute. Yeah. Say that again.
B
I like that color as well, that she mentioned. The Chatruse shade. It's. That's like the yellow kind of almost green.
A
I think it's like brat green almost. Am I wrong? That's what I thought of. I'm gonna glue that up.
C
I'll do a live, live Google. Oh, we love a live Google. Live Google. Yeah.
A
It's giving brat.
C
Bumping that, bumping that. Do, do, do, do.
B
Oh, wait, that does actually look a lot like Brat. I thought it was a bit more yellow than that. Okay, I did.
C
I was going with you, too. Rapid fire. What color would you like to flirt with this season? Is red gonna be your favorite?
A
Red's mine. I do love red in summer, but red in winter as well.
B
I like a little bit of blue.
A
Yeah, I can see you in blue. Blue and burgundy.
B
That corn combination that she mentioned. Yes. Blue with brown also looks gorgeous as well, so I feel like I can get away with a bit of blue. Yeah.
A
You.
C
If anyone will ask.
A
Sorry. She was waiting for us.
B
I just knew it was going to be the red sweater, so.
C
No, I'm actually. I have probably for nine months lusted after a cobalt blue bag. And when I saw it on the Met Gala carpet, I was like, is this a sign that I am supposed to invest in a cobalt blue? I love that color. I just think a little pop of cobalt blue. So good.
A
Do you know what you're really good in winter at doing texture. Oh. I feel like you're always in, like, a faux fur or you've got, like, a croc going on, and it's always adding a lot of depth to your outfits.
C
For those who are concerned, faux croc, it's okay.
A
I said faux. At first. I thought I covered that.
C
Faux fur.
A
Everything faux, of course. But you're adding a lot of texture, and I like it.
B
Well, you guys already jumped into the accessories. That's what Arnik is going to be covering next. So we're going to hear from her on sunnies and footwear.
C
That just felt like a perfect segue to me.
A
There you go.
E
I love a sunglass option, so the bigger the better is what we're seeing all over the trends at the moment. Big sunglasses for sure, are a personal fave for me. And to finish the look, a square toe when it comes to your footwear, I think as well. Chanel have really done an exceptional job as bringing the square toe back into the forefront, but we're going to see this across our loafers, across our heels. I think they're really going to be the way to finish a look this season.
A
Annika and a square toe match made in heaven.
B
Oh, damn. I don't like a square toe. Really?
A
I love a square toe.
B
It feels wrong on my foot.
A
Okay. Mads is squinting as well.
C
I just don't know how it makes a short gal look.
A
Yeah, see, maybe it's a big foot girly thing because I feel like it looks better on my feet. But I'm size 41.
B
I do really love a pointed toe, but I have an extremely small foot.
C
It's more that you're tall re I think when you're short and then the like shortness of a shoe, like if it elongates a little bit. Although someone told me I had a big foot for a short girl the other day.
B
What size are you?
C
Size eight. Well, that was pretty standard.
A
I wouldn't know.
B
I think that's probably a standard size, isn't it?
A
Usually I tell people they're Jesus.
C
You know what? I was not that friend though when we met. I was like, oh, cute. My mum's a 43. I was like, that's cute. You can buy a standard size shoe.
A
But Annika did mention was creeping in with loafers as well. So not just heels.
C
Well, I was in Tony Bianco recently girlfriend of mine was buying some little ballet flats and they. I did notice a lot more square toes because I was looking at the loafer section in the ballet flats and there was a lot more going on there in the square toe division.
B
I just really struggle with a flat in winter. I really do. I can't quite style my outfits right now. I'm struggling.
C
We're all sitting here laughing at our footwear. Like Joe was like, I didn't realize Snake like you're back in the sneaker thing. I was like, you know what? I was just so lost. And now I'm back. It's like one pair of Tony Banco loafers and these are all I'm rotating. Oh, and I got my horse girl boots.
A
Yeah, the horse girl boots are quite good. A few of the girls in the office are rocking the knee high leather horse girl boots. Again. Too tall and too no, tall is not the issue. Too big of a feet, Too big of a feet.
B
Too big of a feet.
C
Do you know what that does work though, Feet too big and too big of a feet.
B
Anyway, next we're discussing those must have winter stables for your wardrobe. But that's right after a word from today's sponsor.
C
There's something so chic and effortless about investing in good quality staples. Yes, in your wardrobe, but also in your beauty routine. And we love the idea of a capsule beauty routine. Fewer products, better products and everything earning its place in your makeup bag. That's exactly why Merit has become one of our go to beauty brands. Their whole approach is about simplifying your routine with curated essentials that make getting ready feel effortless, polished and quick. Their best sellers set is a really good place to start. I definitely do from one of my favourite fashion creators in the Australian landscape. Her name is Katerina Riley. She's a fashion fashion designer and she also creates so much content around how to spot quality winter staples. So we're going to play a little voice note from her right now.
A
Okay.
D
I have three key winter staples. First is a fine sheer close to the body merino wool long sleeve. You actually have such great longevity throughout seasons with this piece because merino wool has fantastic thermoregulation properties. So it keeps you warm when you're cold and cool when you're hot. It's like magic. It's also super versatile. I find styling wise you can wear it during the evening with a cute bar underneath. I think. Definitely a key knit. Whether you prefer chunky for fluffy a turtleneck. I'm actually loving a high V neck this season. Personally we're looking for natural fibers in our knits. I'm an absolute no to acrylic. Personally. Acrylic fiber length is generally short and weak so will peel like crazy. You won't have any longevity in it. I love cotton wool blends. It's acceptable for me for a bit of nylon in there for performance benefits too, especially depending on your niche structure. Finally, a staple jacket. I know everyone's shape preferences are Different. But I'm going to say a funnel neck bomber jacket is the shape of the season. Whether it's a faux leather version, suede, just a heavyweight cotton version, or a more sporty nylon version. Always check your care labels when purchasing. And happy shopping.
B
This is the shit you need to know.
A
I know.
C
Honestly, she is by far my favourite person to follow on the Internet. I became obsessed with her a long time ago and I think I put a comment like, brands need to do paid ads with you dissecting their new season. And I think it's the most liked comment I've ever left on someone's video.
A
Didn't Venroy do an ad?
C
They sure did.
A
Smart.
C
I'll send you my bill. Do you know what? I love this. I never knew that about merino, but now that explains why I'm okay outside and indoors in it.
A
So last autumn winter, all the girls in the shameless media office were rocking the Cosmerino wool knit. And it's like thin enough that you can wear like a sheer bra underneath at a night out. It's so, so cute. Or you can layer it. They have dropped it this year, but they've got it in different colorways. I haven't quite found the ones that work within my wardrobe, but I'm still using the ones from last year. The quality is so good and they're really easy to wash. I just wash them on like cold, delicate wool setting. Keeps it nice and fresh. Joe's stoked. Joe's looking at me very happy.
B
I'm gonna recap our knitwear care at the end of this episode. But Kat actually did a video recently on cos newness at the moment. Okay. And she had a look at a few knits that they had right now and she was like, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick. She also did witchery and seed as well for our more like kind of mid price range item.
A
Yeah.
C
Can I give another merino shout out?
B
Yes.
C
Uniqlo. They do some of the best merino knits and they're like 49.95. They do like a little button down polo. They do them in a V neck around neck. Honestly, like choose your player. But a great tip that someone gave me once is to get two of the same jumpers. Especially if you love this kind of like over the shoulder or you love this like scarf. Look at the moment to do that in the two fabric like the same color or find like a complementary color and pair them together.
A
I did that with Suzanne and Jo. I know you're a Big Cezanne, girly.
B
Love Cezanne. And also they do knitwear really well because I feel like they're actually built for cold weather. It's like sometimes Australian brands, I just feel like they don't really put a lot into the knitwear because it's like, oh, well, it doesn't really get that cold in a lot of parts of Australia, so they don't really bother to make it full of mohair or cashmere or whatever they using. It's kind of, as Kat alluded to, a lot of it is acrylic, I
A
find I always layer them with a singlet underneath as well. And I've got them in bright colors as well. So when I am trying to inject a bit of colour, I've got a red one that's really cute. And then I've got them. I think I've got. I've got a red, black and a cream.
B
You know what I got recently from Suzanne, actually is like this little triangle shaped scarf that you can like wrap around your neck and you can also use it as a little. What do they call it that you could put around your head. Like a.
A
Almost like a bandana or something.
B
Yeah, like kind of a bandana.
A
That's so cute.
B
A wool one.
A
My big head could never. Big feet, big head.
C
I love that trend at the moment and I feel like I'm seeing a lot of it too. I like when it's included with the jumper and I don't have to buy it separately.
B
I love those scarf jackets at the moment. I really want one.
C
I feel like they're everywhere. Not as much as the funnel neck jacket, which Katerina spoke about as well.
B
Yes.
C
Which I would like justice for the funnel neck right now because we were talking about this actually before we recorded last week and Kate was like, I love your funnel neck jacket. That's really having a moment. And I was like, like it is. But let's discuss. Is this a trend or is this something that's always been around and is now just surging? Because I remember running over the road one very hard day at work and just needing a dopamine hit. Going to friends with Fang and buying this great funnel neck jacket about, I want to say, four years ago, they're still cutting it now. I feel like they're still selling a lot of them. Given that four years in, it's still being cut, but I just think we're seeing it everywhere at the moment.
A
I do not think it's a trend. I think it's timeless and it reminds me of Max Mara. I feel they are the OGs who do a lot of funnel necks. Their coats like so high neck. I also love that you can layer them with scarves and have more of a statement moment on top.
B
Sorry, guys.
C
Also just great in the season when you're a bit sick and your lymph nodes might be a bit swollen and you just want to cover up.
B
Seriously.
A
We do actually have a voice note as well from fashion content creator and she's a layering expert. So this is the perfect time. Marissa Leps just going to apply that for us now.
F
Hi, Stylish Pod. I have to say, one of the few things that excites me about winter is the opportunity to layer my pieces. The main thing about layering for me is that it doesn't have to be complicated. I try to not think about any rules and just have fun with my wardrobe. Usually I'll start with something cozy and soft as a base layer and then just build from there. So think chunky knits, oversized coats, woolen pants, maybe some colorful tights. Speaking of color, why not break up the dark, dreary, moody winter palette with a pop of blue or a deep forest green? Color doesn't have to belong exclusively to spring and summer. Sometimes seeing color in the depths of winter feels like a breath of fresh air. So listen to your body and be intentional with your choices and yeah, have fun with it.
B
I really love the call out to tights because there's so many ways you can play with the color and the texture and the pattern of tights and also make other items in your wardrobe, like your mini skirts and mini dresses, so much more trans seasonal and able to wear them throughout the year. Like I feel like in Melbourne you kind of have all of these separate wardrobes, whereas if you lived on the Gold coast, you don't really have that diversity in your wardrobe.
A
Not at all.
B
So we're spoiled for choice, but it just means that sometimes for most of the year we're not wearing the items that we have.
A
I have this black micro mini from Sur the label. I've had it for like five years and I always just throw a blazer over the top. I wear closed toe shoes and a pair of thick tights and it's like go to nighttime outfit in winter.
B
Yeah.
C
Might I suggest your micro shorty shorts from sir could also get a whirl this winter?
A
Yes, they could. I do love a micro short at the moment.
B
I like the short with the blazer trend right now.
C
Yes.
B
Yeah, it's Cute.
C
I feel cold looking at them without a tight, though. Like, I feel the chill in my bones.
B
Needs a tight.
A
If I was 21, I would totally wear that without wearing tights, but I'm not
C
really. I had no idea.
B
I will say since I've been on this podcast, I have invested in so many more quality pieces from like, what I've learned being on here. So I hope the audience feel the same. Yeah. Especially with my winter items and knitwear. And I honestly don't think a single piece of my knitwear has peeled since I've started buying A, more quality pieces, but B, paying a bit more attention to how I look after them as well. We did that whole episode. I can't remember what that was titled. We can always link it in the episode notes. But it was all around like caring for your clothes and washing, which was obviously like one of my favorite episodes ever.
C
Yeah, I think winter's just so much more conducive of it. Like I. I was talking about it recently. I'm like self confessed lazy dresser. Like, I am okay to be in a little fitted knit and a pair of jeans with a great coat on and that coat to be worn four out of seven days every day, you know, every week of the winter season. But I just think like buying an investment piece, I don't know, I find that I'm like not donating or selling things that I'm buying for autumn or winter the way that I would for summer because I just kind of go like another little sundress. Like there seems to be more variety
A
required in summer or it's anchored in an event. So it's like a lot of events usually are in summer. So it's like trying to, you know, make space for something new, sell it on depop. And then, you know, if you've got to buy something for another event, it's.
B
I'm going to put you guys on the spot. Favorite outerwear piece in your wardrobe.
A
Oh, I'm going to say right now, oh my God, this is really tough.
B
I'm.
A
Oh, I'm. I'm going to say I have this Camila Mark blazer. It's structured and kind of is almost like pep kind of comes in and then peplums out. I wore it with my black ser. Mini and my black so mini shorts. It's really, really cute and I've had it for like three years now. But again, it's just, it makes me feel so put together. What's yours?
C
Mine is actually the Marcella Henny coat, which I purchased after seeing it on Georgie in your team. Ray here in the Shameless media office. It is just a great black wool coat that I will have in my wardrobe forever.
A
My build on that. Both you and Georgie look amazing in this coat. It feels like made for short girls as well. Like, I think so often. I'm not trying to offend. I actually, I. Hey, I set that up with big head, big foot.
B
Remember, small girl.
C
Great coat.
A
You look amazing in that coat. So does Georgie. But so often you have to get coats taken up because they drag on the ground. That coat looks great on you guys.
C
I think they've actually done it in a petite version now because I think both Georgie and I wear heels a lot, so maybe that, like, I can still wear it with a flat, but I think in an ideal world, you wouldn't mind it being ever so slightly shorter.
A
Jo, what's yours?
B
Mine is a leather trench that I have from Anna Pelley. It's chocolate and it is so warm and it just always elevates an outfit. I could just throw that on. I could honestly have the shittest outfit on underneath. Put that on. I'm like, it's a 10 out of 10.
C
You look amazing in that coat as well.
B
Thank you.
A
The thing is as well, Jo, when you're investing in good quality pieces, so if you're looking at the fabrication and you're taking care of your items, the reality of it is you're less likely to have to buy or repurchase items year on year. I find that I've only had to purchase, you know, a handful of products over the last four to five years. And I still have these knits. I still have a P. Johnson knit from three winters ago and it is in immaculate condition because it's 100 cashmere. So, yes, it can be a little bit more expensive, but generally speaking, I would say you get more longevity and therefore it's more sustainable as well.
B
100. And for those people that don't want to go back and listen to that entire episode about knitwear in particular, some top line notes from me is store them folded, lay them flat to dry, hand wash or knit cycle if you're me. Because I hate hand washing and specialty detergents specifically made for knitwear covered it perfectly.
C
Beautiful. I love how many cleaning slash caring hacks got put in today. Jo's, like, back in her element.
B
I am. I am. I took a little break from it, but I'm back.
C
It reminds me of that. I took a little minute. Now I'm back,
A
