Host

Danny Brown
What's up, Retta?
Host
You dress so cool, dude.
Danny Brown
Thank you.
Host
Is this like your New York look or. You look like that in Austin, Texas, too.
Danny Brown
I mean, it's hot out there.
Host
I know.
Danny Brown
So I gotta, you know, I gotta pick my poison.
Host
Do you like layering kind of like an autumn autumnal kind of fits? Yeah, yeah.
Danny Brown
I mean, I plan for it. I like buying clothes. Preseason.
Host
Exactly.
Danny Brown
Like in the summer, I'm shopping for
Host
fall and you get. You put on like a slouchy Saturday morning and you go to the farmer's market with your. No, I don't know why I said it that way.
Danny Brown
I really. When I'm home, I'm really more like. Just because it's so hot. So whatever you can wear just to not be hot.
Host
Yeah, I guess so.
Danny Brown
They're too big.
Host
They're big over there in Texas. The people.
Danny Brown
I mean, they eat a lot. Have you seen the portions?
Host
Yeah, it's disgusting. But if you came here, you'd be a. You'd be a tall gentleman. You're probably like five eleven, six foot six.
Danny Brown
One, two, three, maybe. Oh, in New York, I mean, on my Wikipedia, they say I'm six' three. So let's go. Yeah.
Host
I'm just saying, you're like a New York 6, 8. Then. I'm just saying, you're like. It's a good feeling.
Danny Brown
Okay.
Host
Yeah. Yeah.
Danny Brown
Okay.
Host
Yeah. Danny DeVito is basically the normal, common New York. Yeah. You see a lot of them guys, like, dating, like, elevens, and you're like, how does that work?
Danny Brown
Money.
Host
I was at the Zo Ron Mom Donnie election party last night. I got. I'm hungover.
Danny Brown
Yes.
Host
I mean, it's pretty lame to.
Danny Brown
I'm not jealous of you. Some things happen.
Host
Some things. Some things happened last night. And I can't say because it's kind of a secret.
Danny Brown
Sounds like a great time.
Host
I'm just not talking to AOC again.
Danny Brown
All right.
Host
You know what you did? You know what you did. Do you feel like. Do you know that Zoran was a rapper?
Danny Brown
He was.
Host
He had. He was a hit. He was a rapper.
Danny Brown
What's his rap name?
Host
Do you feel like representation knowing that there's a Rapper, Mayor of New York.
Danny Brown
No, no, that has nothing. I mean, rapping.
Host
He's got smoke with 50 too. You know that?
Danny Brown
Really?
Host
Yeah. 50 is talking. He said that because he's gonna raise my taxes or something.
Danny Brown
See, I've been staying away from social media, so I don't know what's going on.
Host
Me too. I just learned all this in the last, what, 30 minutes before the interview?
Danny Brown
Okay.
Host
No, but, yeah, famously nearly signed by G Unit back in.
Danny Brown
I mean, Tony Yayo took a liking to my music, so he was helping me out.
Host
But there was something about your pants or something.
Danny Brown
I mean, they didn't like. I mean, 50 didn't like that I wore skinny jeans. Really? Yeah.
Host
He said, why are your pants so tight?
Danny Brown
Yeah. That's so pretty of him.
Host
So you're on Team Zo Ron in this beef right now.
Danny Brown
I'm not on no team because we don't know in two years.
Host
Zorron is two of the finest rappers.
Danny Brown
I don't trust politicians, really. So in like two years, we don't know what we gotta see. We gotta see his work.
Host
Yeah, yeah.
Danny Brown
You gotta show improve first. So. I can't.
Host
I think he's. I met him and I think he's just pretty. Like, he's just a millennial. He likes soccer.
Danny Brown
Cause I remember when Detroit had a real young mare, really, Kwame Kilpatrick, and.
Host
Oh, yeah, he caught some charges, right?
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
What was the scandal with Kwame Kilpatrick?
Danny Brown
I mean, it was a lot, but I feel like it was like just misusing funds type of situation.
Host
If Michigan. Let's say Michigan, had a governor race, right? And for the Republicans, you had Kid Rock and Democrats, you had Eminem. Who do you think would win?
Danny Brown
Eminem.
Host
Eminem. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Would it be close, you think or.
Danny Brown
I don't. No.
Host
Yeah, I think I would go for Eminem, too.
Danny Brown
Yeah. I think I'd vote for Em.
Host
Do you have a relationship with Marshall?
Danny Brown
I met him.
Host
Yeah. He really is so good at rapping. It's really like. But sometimes it's like, I. You're rapping too good.
Danny Brown
I mean, when Em first came around, it wasn't really too many white rappers, so it was like he had to really go extra, extra to really be, you know. And I feel like he was just a fan, so he cared more about the genre than, you know, the average rapper, I would say.
Host
Yeah. Do you think there'll be more opportunities for white people?
Danny Brown
It's a lot of opportunities for white rappers right now.
Host
I. Why am I Being. Were you part of the 8 mile thing? Was that a real thing?
Danny Brown
I wasn't. I'm not from 8 mile.
Host
But did you do. Did you go to the mom's spaghetti kind of battle kind of place?
Danny Brown
No, that was kind of like before my time. Yeah, that was like. Right. That was like the generation before me, so I would have loved to be a part of that world. When I came around, it was more like open mic. It was like open mic situations, but they were kind of like. It was kind of like dying out.
Host
Were people doing standup at the open mic?
Danny Brown
No, it was just rap.
Host
Just rap. It was just rap. That would be so funny.
Danny Brown
It used to be sick, though.
Host
Yeah. If someone was just, like, talking about Tinder in the middle of it and getting booed.
Danny Brown
I mean, you would get booed if you was trash.
Host
Did you ever go end to 8 mile mode where you're like, I live in a trailer. I never lived in lunch houses. No, but you say all the things embarrassing about yourself.
Danny Brown
Oh, I think I do all the time. I mean, I just think that's self awareness.
Host
You were inspired by B. Rabbit to do that. Was he kind of like a. I
Danny Brown
think m inspired a lot.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
But far as like that, I think. Yeah, I guess.
Host
So he never unked you as, like, a newer Detroit rapper?
Danny Brown
I mean, I will say. I mean, at the time we met, I was still deep into, like, my alcoholism and still getting, you know, up and all that. So I'm sober, so you don't want to be around that, you know.
Host
Yeah, because.
Danny Brown
And I wasn't, you know, I was still having fun, so it wasn't. So I totally understand that.
Host
You drank a fifth vodka and. Would you dare me to drive? Did you ever say that to him? That would have been funny.
Danny Brown
Nah.
Host
You were on the verge of signing for G Unit.
Danny Brown
I wouldn't say on the verge. I mean, 50 started to. I mean, you know, I would make songs at Yale Crib and he'd play them for me. He eventually started to take a liking to me, you know, But I still. I just was.
Host
I was too old.
Danny Brown
I kind of feel like. So I was already stuck in my ways of what I wanted to be as an artist, and he wanted to mold me into something else.
Host
Was there ever a moment where you were gonna just, like, they wanted you to just fucking sell out?
Danny Brown
I wouldn't say sell out. It's just more what they thought would be more appealing to what the masses of hip hop or the average hip hop fan would like.
Host
Did they pitch you on like an outfit or like.
Danny Brown
No, I mean 58. He gave me some clothes one time.
Host
Like just wear this back of your pants.
Danny Brown
It was some big ass pants with like some gold hundred dollar bills on the back pocket.
Host
Why didn't you put on the pants?
Danny Brown
I did put on the damn pants. I wore them a little bit. Then I was getting no bitches, really. And I was like, hold up, let me get these skinny jeans back.
Host
Do you conceive of like the fact that like in hip hop today, like there was primarily just a coastal thing happening and it took a while for like, I guess first it was Atlanta, maybe a little Houston, maybe a little.
Danny Brown
I mean, but that's, that's just where like the bigger companies was at. So if you was somebody that was in the Midwest, if you wasn't traveling to New York or LA to get a record deal, you wasn't really doing them. But I still think it was like a lot of scenes still bubbling. Like Memphis been doing they thing for a real long time.
Host
Since the 90s.
Danny Brown
Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Host
Have you ever listened to those early like DJ Paul tapes?
Danny Brown
They're amazing.
Host
Yeah, Little Fly Lord, infamous.
Danny Brown
Oh, that shit. I like Coops the nigga, but the
Host
music just sounds like it's coming out of a shoebox or it sounds like it's coming out of hell, actually.
Danny Brown
I mean that's the, that's the vibe.
Host
It just sounds insane.
Danny Brown
That's the vibe.
Host
It's the best music I think ever.
Danny Brown
Like, I love that they took to it in like Asian countries now and it's like three six mafia style rap groups in like Tokyo and shit. Yeah, they make drifting videos to that shit.
Host
Your dad like was a house dj, Correct?
Danny Brown
He hates that I say that. He, he just DJed for fun, right? But like DJ house music, that was his style.
Host
Detroit was techno, right. Chicago's house. And like the cool thing is like it's bigger in Europe basically. Like those, those artists are bigger in Europe than they are in the States, basically.
Danny Brown
In Germany and Germany, yeah, yeah.
Host
Why there?
Danny Brown
I think it's always just like Berlin. Berlin just always took to like, like you have been a trezor.
Host
I'm never gonna go, why, what's wrong with Berlin? That's fool me one situation. Oh, I'm not going back. When did you like, when's the first time you felt like you like popped like or.
Danny Brown
I mean, it was, it was a year I was playing at south by Southwest and you know, I was just doing the normal shows like, and the biggest show at the time was, like, Fader Fort and Rafael Sadiq couldn't make his flight, and so they needed to fill the spot. And, you know, I was just starting to get a name, and it was bubbling, so they had me to come fill his spot. And, you know, I did great at the show. I started to see, like, my social media started to go crazy. I was gaining followers. And then maybe like, a year later, I was on the COVID of the Fader. So that was, like, my moment.
Host
I felt like, yeah, it sounds like an old story, right? Like, there was a cancellation on Johnny Carson. And then I had a big. I had a great set. It's kind of like there's something like, oh, yeah. There's something sweet about it.
Danny Brown
Yeah. Because, like, I was. It was just like, I had my moment, I was prepared, and I killed it. And so, yes. And then the next year, I was, like, headlining Vader for it.
Host
We had a great idea for a documentary. I know your manager's here. You want to pitch your manager on what our idea was.
Danny Brown
Yeah, we're gonna go back to my motherland, which is the Philippines.
Host
We're gonna go to the Philippines and connect with the A Wakanda. Kind of like retracing the ancestors.
Danny Brown
I want to find out who speared my uncle.
Host
Someone speared him, like, Bill Goldberg style.
Danny Brown
Like, no talking about with an actual spear. No.
Host
Who did that?
Danny Brown
We gotta go find out. That's what the documentary about.
Host
Oh, so this is more of, like,
Danny Brown
a revenge murder mystery.
Host
This is a revenge true crime.
Danny Brown
Murder mystery. True crime.
Host
Just call Netflix right now. What are you doing?
Danny Brown
Niggas are still getting scared.
Host
He's on his phone right now. Who you texting? Netflix. He's bored.
Danny Brown
I heard Netflix don't pay nobody, though, so.
Host
What?
Danny Brown
Netflix ain't paying nobody, so.
Host
I know, dude. It's not true.
Danny Brown
Go to Tubi, man.
Host
Tubi's paying.
Danny Brown
I think so, yeah.
Host
Yeah. Who, like, who did you look at as, like, your kind of influences? Like what? Like, what was the thing that kind of inspired you to get to get started making music?
Danny Brown
I mean, I knew I wanted to rap the very first time I heard LL Cool J. I can say my favorite rapper was NASA growing up.
Host
Illmatic.
Danny Brown
Yeah. And then, you know, Wu Tang. And then, you know, of course, like, I had a West coast face. Snoop and Death Row and all that. But my. I think my biggest influence is a UK rapper, Dizzy Rascal.
Host
He's the best.
Danny Brown
Yeah, he's a goat.
Host
He's the best.
Danny Brown
He's a goat.
Host
Have you met him before?
Danny Brown
Yes.
Host
Is he cool?
Danny Brown
A few times, yeah.
Host
He's like, dude, how classy is that?
Danny Brown
Yes.
Host
Check it out, dude.
Danny Brown
It's like Don Dre living the life.
Host
Yeah, I'm hungover. I'm Don Draper, dude, I can't believe I'm hungover from a politics party. I gotta tell you, I would have
Danny Brown
to be drunk to go to that.
Host
There was, of course, you had a famous incident once on stage. Pretty cool.
Danny Brown
I wouldn't say so now that I look back on it.
Host
I mean, you were young. You were probably.
Danny Brown
I was in my 30s.
Host
You were in your 30s?
Danny Brown
Yeah. Too old to be doing that kind of.
Host
Oh, yeah. Well, how old were you?
Danny Brown
In my 30s.
Host
How old in your 30s?
Danny Brown
I can't remember. I was on a lot of Molly.
Host
You could only run for president at 35, so that's pretty.
Danny Brown
No, I think I was probably before 35.
Host
Okay, so you're 33.
Danny Brown
Come on, you gotta go maybe about 33.
Host
Yeah, yeah, 33. So you can't even be the president yet. Yeah, you can get your dick sucked.
Danny Brown
30s are still young, though.
Host
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So in retrospect, it was like. I mean, come. But it's not like the worst thing in the world.
Danny Brown
I mean, I would like. I mean.
Host
Yes, it's a little.
Danny Brown
I would like to forget it.
Host
Yeah, I don't want to bring it up. It's probably annoying because you get like, asked about it.
Danny Brown
Yeah, it's so long ago. That was like 20 years ago.
Host
Yeah. And you weren't married to her either.
Danny Brown
No.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
I think it was a CIA psyop. Really?
Host
CIA sector. Jake on stage.
Danny Brown
I think. I think they was put. I think she was planted.
Host
That's so them. That is so CIA. That is so CIA. I should have known. That is exactly the kind of thing they would do. They would do that. Why doesn't the CIA stand it?
Danny Brown
Is a conspiracy theory behind that?
Host
Do you have baby boys? Baby bruhs? Are there younger rappers that you look out for?
Danny Brown
I mean, there's a lot of younger artists that I connect with, but I wouldn't say look out for her. I mean, if they, you know, when ask me some advice, I'm always here to talk, but I can't say I'm that hands on with anybody like that.
Host
Is it like a lone wolf kind of world? Like, it's like, kind of like, ain't
Danny Brown
comedy like that, too?
Host
I'm the only one that's comedy.
Danny Brown
Definitely some lone wolf backstab. But with Rap music, it's a little more communal.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah. Like you can help each other lose
Host
your best friend in rap.
Danny Brown
Best friend in rap. I would say I have best friends because you know how that is. And I'm old. When you getting. I mean, I don't know. I'm not like hanging out, you know,
Host
as a man, you should be friends, Right?
Danny Brown
I really like hanging out with Quadeca. That's my homie. We went to go see Weapons. It was a great time.
Host
Was it a good movie?
Danny Brown
Hell, yeah. I like that.
Host
Yeah, that's nice. You go to a movie with your friend from work?
Danny Brown
Yeah, you know, he was in Austin. He's like, you wanna go see Weapons? I'm like, yeah, I feel good. I wanna go on a date.
Host
What's the fattest? You go with a girl?
Danny Brown
I don't hit some big bitches.
Host
What's the biggest?
Danny Brown
I mean, my 20s, my entire 20s. I was broke and just living couch to couch kind of situation. So. Yeah, for a hot plate and a couch.
Host
Oh, good for. Yeah, yeah.
Danny Brown
I used to be on them phone chat lines. And then the fat. They used to be sounding good too. Really? You'd be like, damn, this boy should notice me. Show up £300, like, all right. I just always used to have a pep. I used to have a pep talk with my way. While I was on the way over there and be like, man, it don't matter, man. Whatever it is, I'm hitting it, man. Yeah, you just gotta be strong.
Host
I only did it one time.
Danny Brown
You know what I'm saying? You just gotta be strong. Get over there. Like, yeah, If I knew, see, you'd be mentally prepared. I remember one time I hit a bitch so big and we were sleeping in the bed together. Yeah. And like, her roommate had came in the room. She didn't even know I was in the room. We was laying next to each other. She didn't even know a nigga was in that bed. Yeah, that shit was crazy. That's what I was like, yeah, this shit gotta stop. I'm fucking so big, I gotta hide behind them.
Host
You didn't know that it was a two man situation.
Danny Brown
I was hungry that night. She said she was buying pizza.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
She had weed. I'm like, man, I'm tired of sleeping that grandma crib. Let me just get a night away. And then it'll make you start to appreciate the grandma crib. Cause you be like, damn, that was hard work. I can't do that every night. That was some shit.
Host
It was some heavy lifting.
Danny Brown
I mean. Yes.
Host
You know, I only did it one time, and it would feel like she. Every time I've been with a lady, I've been like, she's an idiot. What is she doing?
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
What a fool. Like, imagine your father. And then. But with the. The bigger one, she was like. She was like, thank you. She appreciated me. She made me feel beautiful. Yeah. She made me feel beautiful.
Danny Brown
I have purpose, man.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
And if it does feel like you've kind of.
Danny Brown
So I don't got no. Like, I don't got no type.
Host
Yeah. No type whatsoever. Yeah. It's kind of gay to have a type.
Danny Brown
Yeah. I like. I'm all about personality.
Host
Come on. But you wouldn't be with some sort of.
Danny Brown
If I hate you, I can't be around you.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
But if you're somebody that's, like, with
Host
an eye hanging out of the socket, you wouldn't do that. If it's a great guy. Girl. I mean, I'm hungover.
Danny Brown
I'm trying to think about it. Like,
Host
imagine a small hand. But she's, like, funny as fuck now
Danny Brown
for basically like Toxic Avengers.
Host
Yeah. Yeah. Acid burn victim.
Danny Brown
Yeah. You know what I'm saying?
Host
And it's no shade. I mean, we could be friends.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
Can you be friends with a girl?
Danny Brown
I don't think so.
Host
I don't think so either. They always fall.
Danny Brown
I try. I try.
Host
They always fall in love with us. And they say things like, you're not there for me. And I'm like, you're not my girlfriend. You're not my girlfriend.
Danny Brown
I mean, it's possible, but it's possible. I just. I think I just wasn't at the right place in my life to be friends with women when I were. Because I kind of now miss those kind of relationships.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
Because you kind of talk to them about different. That you tell one of your homemade. Man, shut your gay ass up. Right.
Host
You could be sensitive with them.
Danny Brown
Yeah. Sometimes you need the outside perspective. You need to talk to a. About a bitch.
Host
I know. You could, like, say a little, like, gay thing once, and then it's kind of. She'll. You could be like, I know.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
Yeah. And she'll like. They like it.
Danny Brown
You can be yourself.
Host
You can be yourself. You can watch me. You watch reality TV.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
You'd be like, let's see how 90 Day Fiance. See how real these housewives are?
Danny Brown
That's my thing. 90 Day Fiance.
Host
Yeah. Yeah. I love that. Do you find that you end up hating the American every time. I think I do.
Danny Brown
Every time no, because.
Host
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Danny Brown
I'll be rooting for the scammers. Yeah, I kind of the African niggas with the fat white. I'd be like, that was the best one. That was the best one.
Host
The Nigeria guy. The Nigeria guy. And she went to Nigeria and gave
Danny Brown
all that Trump stuff. She had cornrows and all type of shit.
Host
So disgusting. That woman, He's a good man. She's like. And then I saw he had 2,000 other women on his social media. And then she felt betrayed.
Danny Brown
That's some shit right there.
Host
Yeah. And he's wearing the trumpet. He's like, He's a great businessman. Yeah,
Danny Brown
he had moved. He moved with her, didn't he? She tried to like, make him like he was just babysitting kids and shit.
Host
Oh, she was one of those you can't see the roommate on the other side kind of ladies.
Danny Brown
Yeah, no, she was. She. What I'm talking about was crazy Mountain.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
It was a mountain.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah. That was like three or four of them. I'm talking about like the 600 pound type shit. Really? Like, you see. Yes.
Host
I'm telling you, like, they can't leave the house. So how did.
Danny Brown
She left the house, But I'm telling you it was painful. I know she used to be in pain.
Host
How did you know that? She was offering the pizza. But she's like, you have to exchange some services.
Danny Brown
That's how she wooed me.
Host
So you were out. Where did you see her? Do you remember. Do you remember the new series of things? No.
Danny Brown
This was back in. This was in the early 2000s. This is the day where you can call one of them party lines up on the phone and it'd be like. It'd just be. You could just. You be listening to Profile and be like, I'm at the crib right now and it's hot and juicy. Really don't pull up. And then you gotta press the number. You gotta press the number. Leave her a message. And then she immediately leave her a message. Like, just hit my number. Then y' all will call or whatever. And then you link up. Really?
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
She's like, I was just about to order a pizza. I got some weed, I just need some dick. I should have knew she was big when she said that, though. I'm like, all right, this sound like a good night?
Host
That sounds great. Yeah.
Danny Brown
I mean, I'm not saying it was a bad time. You had a great time. I mean, I was the way I felt about myself. The next day when I got back to My grandma.
Host
That's self hatred. That's self hatred. You didn't hate her.
Danny Brown
I was really ashamed.
Host
She's a great person.
Danny Brown
I was ashamed. And I only was ashamed because then in the morning, I was like, damn, I need to get some cigarettes. She's like, ah, you can walk to the gas station. I remember we walked to the gas station together.
Host
Took forever.
Danny Brown
And didn't know I was a nigga. He was pumping his gas and just the way he was looking at me, like, I just knew in my heart that's something where he was like, no, no, no.
Host
It's like he called the party and
Danny Brown
I tried to just be proud, look him in the eyes, like, yeah, I'm with the big, but I ain't want to go through that no more. That's all it was.
Host
What about it, sir?
Danny Brown
Public perception is everything, man. I wasn't that mature in life, man.
Host
Did you tell her, what did you say to your grandma when she came back?
Danny Brown
It just was a ghosting. I mean, my grandma, she wanted me out the house for the night. Like, damn.
Host
So she was like. Your grandma was like, just go find one of these.
Danny Brown
No, she didn't care. I'm just saying, like, I'm, you know, when you.
Host
She didn't say, how was last night?
Danny Brown
No, my grandma, she was happy I was gone somewhere.
Host
She wasn't, like, telling me all about it. She's like, I hope.
Danny Brown
I hope he move in with the bitch.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
Is she still with us, your grandmother?
Danny Brown
Hell yeah.
Host
She kicking the shirt. How old is she now?
Danny Brown
I don't know. She old.
Host
Does she know that you have money now? I mean, or does she still treat you like you're, like, on the couch?
Danny Brown
My grandma was a boss man. My grandma owned like five houses. Me, my money, she probably like, he still ain't got money like that. My grandma, that caught her.
Host
My grandma's a like, grandma, too.
Danny Brown
It couldn't even be real money to her side.
Host
My grandma, I will, like, you doing
Danny Brown
all right for yourself.
Host
I, like, will not see her for a year. And then I'll see her and she'll be like, you have problems. I'll be like, you lady.
Danny Brown
Mine is my grandma. My grandma cuss a lot.
Host
Mine is.
Danny Brown
My Filipino grandma is pretty cool, but she. She's very strict.
Host
Is she good at karaoke or no?
Danny Brown
No, my grandma. I mean, my grandma been here since the 60s.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah, she goes back every blue moon. No, I don't think my grandma, she good at sewing.
Host
I don't know if that's a Filipino thing.
Danny Brown
I mean, that's her job. That's what she always did.
Host
They're unreal.
Danny Brown
They're seamstress. I thought that was always like. That was like more of like a Japan.
Host
No, no. Karaoke is a Japanese word. But the Filipinos really gave it a new meaning.
Danny Brown
I know they love it over there in, like, the uk, too.
Host
Yeah, but they don't do a Filipino style like that.
Danny Brown
I mean, I never was a karaoke guy, to be honest. I feel like I'm working for free.
Host
Cause you make your own songs.
Danny Brown
Yeah, I'm working for free at that point.
Host
For me, I feel like it was fun.
Danny Brown
I've been one time and I saw Chief Keef.
Host
You went with Chief Keef?
Danny Brown
No, that's the song I performed. Was Chief Keef. Oh, no, I did Kevin. You did Kevin. It's going down.
Host
I'm yelling.
Danny Brown
Tim Burton. That's so good.
Host
Actually. Put that on. Put that on.
Danny Brown
Yeah, that's a great karaoke song.
Host
Did you ever meet Chief Keith? Yeah, he's the best, right?
Danny Brown
Yeah, he's amazing.
Host
He's amazing. He's like a normal guy now, too. Have you seen.
Danny Brown
That's great.
Host
Because he was just. He was on drugs when he left.
Danny Brown
I mean, he left la. I mean, he left Chicago, you know. Yeah, he spent his whole twenties in
Host
LA now, but everyone thought that he was, like, potentially mentally retarded.
Danny Brown
But, like, I mean, he got Asperger's, don't he?
Host
Yeah, probably. But that. That's why the hooks are so good. I think he said that's why the hooks are so good. But, like. But then I saw an interview with him like a couple months ago. He's like, yeah, just need to get out of Chicago. Pretty much. Pretty much happy here in LA. Just like a normal guy.
Danny Brown
I mean, he, like 39. I think he like them.
Host
He's like 30.
Danny Brown
Yeah. So I'm saying he spent his whole 20s in LA. I feel like that was a pivotal time in his life. So, yeah, definitely changed him. He definitely a different person than what he would have did if he grew up in Chicago. In Chicago?
Host
Yeah. Yeah. Was Detroit as crazy as Chicago when you were growing up or. No?
Danny Brown
I mean, I think Chicago just going through a real hard time right now. I feel like every city has those phases of just spikes of crime type. But I think Detroit has definitely chilled out from when I was a kid.
Host
What was it like growing up? Because it was like post like Autoboom.
Danny Brown
I mean, it was. I just remember all that kind of like, going down, you know, as time progressed. Cause my grandma worked for Chrysler, you know, so. And I just. But she got hurt on a job, so she had retired real early.
Host
She did, yeah. And your parents, were they in the auto industry or.
Danny Brown
No, no, no, no. My mom had me at 18. My dad had me at 16. They had four kids by the time he was 21.
Host
Your dad's 16, your mom's 18. Mm, that's pretty cool.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
Did you respect him for that?
Danny Brown
I mean, my dad was like. I mean, they were young.
Host
Well, he pulled.
Danny Brown
It was like kids growing kids. I never thought about that.
Host
Did your dad hurt his hand?
Danny Brown
Yeah. How you know about that?
Host
From all the high fives?
Danny Brown
Oh, no, no. He did lose a finger, though.
Host
Oh, never mind. From all the high fives?
Danny Brown
No, he worked somewhere.
Host
Oh, in a factory.
Danny Brown
Yeah. Some type of.
Host
Oh, you're closer with your mother or your father?
Danny Brown
I would say it's equal.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
It's equal. I grew up. I mean, they were together all the way till I was about 18. So my pops is in and out the house.
Host
What music do they show you?
Danny Brown
Growing up, my dad, he was a super hip hop fan.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
So, like, he was the first person ever. He bought me Wu Tang. First cd. I didn't even know what Wu Tang was, really. Yeah.
Host
You're like a cool dad.
Danny Brown
Yeah, definitely. Like, even, like, just with. Even, like with clothes and sh. Like, my dad would get the Jordans the first day they came out. Whatever new console, video game console was coming out, we'd get it the first day, but then he'll play it all the goddamn time. So then you had to wait three days before you can even try it out.
Host
My dad got it. My dad did that with my nes. He got addicted.
Danny Brown
My dad was addicted to Madden, man.
Host
Yeah. Yeah. But I was addicted to Super Mario. I was like, can I play? He invented a new hand hold.
Danny Brown
Like, he's like this.
Host
What are you, 14 year old Asian kid? What are you doing? He's like. He was like up late, like. Yeah, yeah.
Danny Brown
That kind of shit.
Host
That kind of stuff. It's really annoying when our dads are kind of trying to do kids stuff like that.
Danny Brown
I mean, it was a gift and a curse because I was happy to have all the games and shit.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
You know, and then, you know, like I said, my pops was in and out, so sometimes he might be gone for like three, four days, but then
Host
he come back with the coolest gift ever.
Danny Brown
Mm.
Host
Oh, my God, that's so awesome.
Danny Brown
Yeah, I know, right?
Host
Yeah. Yeah. Did he have a cool car? Yeah, my dad, he was one of those dads who rolls up in a cool car and he's like, I'll see you around the way.
Danny Brown
I think, yeah. The coolest car my dad had, he had the. Remember the Eddie Bauer Explorer trucks? When they first dropped, we had that.
Host
We had that.
Danny Brown
He would be wearing Eddie Bauer and driving in the Eddie Bauer Explorer. Didn't you know the green one? Yeah. The real you.
Host
Remember the tires exploded. The Firestone tires.
Danny Brown
Did they?
Host
Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was like the most popular car in America. Then there was like a huge recall because the, the tires, the tires were exploding on the Ford Explorer.
Squarespace Ad Voice
Sa. Hey, listen, I know I'm not who you're looking for. I know I'm not the usual type of girl that gets the guy at the end of the movie. I know I'm definitely not Matcha Girl. But when I saw the words on your website that you made using squarespace.com, it made me want to be wanted the way that you wanted Matcha Girl to be wanting you. Look, I know I'm a loser. I'm a freak. And I can't imagine why someone like you, who could make such an amazing website on Squarespace using their built in tools like AI assisted blueprint and search engine optimization and their. Oh, scheduling.
Host
Yeah, they're scheduling.
Squarespace Ad Voice
Could ever want me. But just so you know, if you ever did, I'd love you. I'd love you until the day.
Host
Yeah, yeah, yeah, sure. You want to go? Oh, all right.
Danny Brown
Okay. Yeah, yeah.
Squarespace Ad Voice
Thank you.
Host
You never, you never like left like your hometown? Like most. Like I've been.
Danny Brown
I've been gone for four years now,
Host
but like, kind of like most, most people like go to New York or la.
Danny Brown
I feel like I've had my stints, but I just always felt like I couldn't handle myself. I wasn't disciplined enough to be in LA or New York.
Host
You were like with Paris Hilton kind of situation?
Danny Brown
No, I just knew that I partied too hard.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
In Detroit, you know, you get them winners. You can't do shit, stay in the house. And I work on music really, you know, so I think it was great that I didn't try to leave Detroit too soon because I just wouldn't know how to handle it.
Host
Do you have like a production partnership that you've maintained or is it. Do you kind of just.
Danny Brown
I think, yeah. I keep a relationship with everybody that I work with in some sense, but I feel like every album I'm always trying to find A new. New sound or something to influence me. So it's always good to, like, work with newer people coming up and stuff.
Host
I have some. I have some stuff I can show you.
Danny Brown
Okay. Yeah.
Host
Let's talk about the new album. Like, what was, like, what was the new thought? You say that you try out different things each time. What was, like, the thought process this time around?
Danny Brown
I mean, I was just really influenced by, like, what was going on in, like, the hyper pop break core scene. So I wanted to reach out and work with a lot of those artists
Host
who produced on it.
Danny Brown
I got underscores, Jane Remover, Quadeca. Holly did a lot, you know.
Host
Did you get British folks? That sounds British style to me.
Danny Brown
I have a Polish rapper on there, Ty Yukrenka.
Host
Really? You know, the Polish, they get a rough rap, you know, I mean.
Danny Brown
Cause she. That's what I'm saying. Hers, when she rap, it almost sounds.
Host
Oh, it's a girl. Polish.
Danny Brown
Yeah. It almost sounds Asian, almost.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah, the way she. She's sick, man. Tire's sick.
Host
When you're saying you're getting interested in, like. Like break core. You called it.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
What? Just describe what that.
Danny Brown
Break core. I mean, digicore, breakcore. Is this more like.
Host
Like, is it like, dance? That's what it sounds like to me.
Danny Brown
I would say it's kind of like a cousin of, like, drum and bass and jungle.
Host
So it sounds British, right?
Danny Brown
Yeah, yeah, it's. It definitely influenced. Definitely a lot of samples from that.
Host
Yeah, yeah. It's music that, like, on a rainy day, you drive like a VW Golf, like a gti.
Danny Brown
I just walk in the rain.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
That's beautiful.
Danny Brown
Yeah, you just walk in the rain.
Host
Do you conceive of, like, when you finish the song? Have you ever. Do you ever conceive of, like, I've written the. That's a perfect song or do you like.
Danny Brown
I never say perfect song. Cause I always want to get better. I feel like with music, it's never. You never. You know, like, even Bowie did it till he was gone, you know, so it's like you get. And it's one of the Ellis albums he made.
Host
Is he your goat, Black Star? Yeah, it's so good.
Danny Brown
That's what I'm saying.
Host
So, like, I could only listen to
Danny Brown
it twice because I ain't about to go back. I'm not running Black Star back.
Host
He's your number one. He's one of your number ones.
Danny Brown
I mean, definitely a huge inspiration, but I will say I wasn't around for that. Time to where I'd seen the impact. But just reading, you know, studying, doing the history, I definitely could get some inspiration from there. I would say Prince too. Kind of like that.
Host
Yeah. Midwest. Mm. Did you ever meet him?
Danny Brown
No, I wish.
Host
I wish too. Yeah. Yeah. He would be so mean to me.
Danny Brown
That same thing. I was literally thinking in my head, like, he probably imagine how mean he would be.
Host
I'd be like, I mean.
Danny Brown
But I wouldn't have it no other way.
Host
The artist. I'm so excited.
Danny Brown
I mean, I wouldn't be disappointed by that. That's what I would say. You know how they, like, never meet your idols type shit. I would just, like, expect that he
Host
was mean to his friends.
Danny Brown
If he was nice to me, I'd be like, oh, shit.
Host
He hated Michael, and Michael just was completely unfazed by it. That rivalry was the funniest rivalry in the world.
Danny Brown
I can't pick between them two.
Host
I was Michael growing up.
Danny Brown
Of course I was too. But once I got old enough, I realized the genius of Prince.
Host
When Michael did the dick grab thing when I was a little kid, I would see it on TV and I started doing it, and then I would get in so much trouble.
Danny Brown
Mike fucked me up, man. I got my ass whooped with Mike.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
It was not cool to like Mike.
Danny Brown
I mean, that bad video came out, and you remember he was in the subway being bad and shit.
Host
And you know, and those are real bad guys in the video. He got real bad bullies.
Danny Brown
I know. I was getting bullied on the playground
Host
and I thought you thought your butt is mine. You were trying to do your butt is mine.
Danny Brown
No, I just thought, do what Michael do and get up out of this. You know what I'm saying? So I hit the. Oh. And got punched right in the mouth.
Host
You thought that was real fighting?
Danny Brown
I was dilute. Music ran my life. You know, it was always.
Host
You thought that was how a person fights.
Danny Brown
I didn't know. But yeah, I did try to break out the bad routine before the scrap and got my.
Host
Imagine if it worked.
Danny Brown
So embarrassing. I'm glad we moved, dude, you have to move schools.
Host
You have to move schools after that.
Danny Brown
Yeah, I think. But, yeah, I got my ass whooped.
Host
I mean, that is something I didn't
Danny Brown
even realize you can punch people in the mouth to then, like, damn, this nigga just. I just saw that shit on tv
Host
was like second grade and it sounded the same.
Danny Brown
No, this was kindergarten.
Host
Kindergarten?
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
Oh, that follows you to 12th grade.
Danny Brown
Oh, shit.
Host
Oh, yeah, you got. Cause it had to have been so
Danny Brown
far or no, maybe it was first grade.
Host
It would have to be like this.
Danny Brown
And maybe it was first. Cause I remember. Yeah. Cause we moved mid. We moved mid semester type shit. So it was first grade.
Host
You had the nicest parents in the world.
Danny Brown
No, they were already planning to move.
Host
Getting out of Dodge when you embarrassed,
Danny Brown
they were already planning the move. It just lined up, right. But yeah, I got punched in the face.
Host
Did you have to learn how to fight?
Danny Brown
I don't think I ever did.
Host
I don't think I ever did.
Danny Brown
I just realized just punch him in the mouth first.
Host
You have to go first. Yeah.
Danny Brown
That's all. Even if you get your ass whooped after, everybody gonna remember you fouled on him first. So yeah, I just took that motto. Anytime I felt threatened, I would just punch a nigga in the mouth.
Host
Did it like sometimes it didn't work hard enough.
Danny Brown
I mean, I don't think I never knocked nobody out. So.
Host
Yeah, I guess, like moving forward, what are some goals that keep you going as an artist?
Danny Brown
I mean, I feel like music is something, like I said, you can never. It's a never ending quest to get better at it. And now I understand more. So like it's a legacy thing. Like maybe fucking 30 years after I'm dead, some kid is sampling my records and making hit songs out of them or whatever the fuck. So right now I'm just making music for my legacy now.
Host
Do you see some early records and you think like, oh, that like I'm better now?
Danny Brown
Hell yeah. Yeah, Hell yeah.
Host
Or you like that guy's a better.
Danny Brown
But it was a different way of going about making songs at that time.
Host
Yeah. How did Nas do that at 17 then? It's so weird.
Danny Brown
Just born with it, man. But then, you know, I feel like him having a jazz musician father.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
And you know, like your parents, if you haven't any record collections in the house and they really into music, like that shit definitely plays a huge part. But yeah, I like that, like doing the history of music, you know, like going back and like, just really like figuring out records that stand the test of time. And maybe one day I'll have a record like that where people are still talking about like 30 years later.
Host
So instead of top five rappers, what is your five of that?
Danny Brown
I mean, I have my. I mean, I feel like five of my favorite rapper records may not stood the test of time versus records that I know stood the test of time.
Host
Yeah. You know, so what would some of those be?
Danny Brown
Records that I think stand in Touch, like, even. Shit. Just look at something like Marvin Gaye, what's going on? Shit, look what the fuck going on right now. You get what I'm saying? Records like that.
Host
Sometimes when I listen to Future, I think that actually.
Danny Brown
Oh, no, definitely.
Host
Or like, when I listen to, like, Future, like, blues. Well, when I listen, like, March Madness, he's like, even, like. He's, like, in a club, right? And he's, like, on so many drugs, right? And his head can't, like, keep track. It's like he keeps changing tracks. And he's like. He's like, damn, the cops are killing people. Should I fuck this girl even if she's ugly? You know? And he's just. But he's like, also, like. Like, I'm maybe too fucked up right now, and I'm super famous, but I still feel all alone.
Danny Brown
Yeah, Future is.
Host
It's just kind of how it is. A very alienating time. Cut that plea. All of that that is sucks. Just sucks.
Danny Brown
I understand what you're saying. Because Future. Future is kind of like blues music for toxic niggas that owe child support.
Host
It's true.
Danny Brown
And Gaslight, it's like gaslighting for them. You know what I'm saying?
Host
But don't you buy it when he's like, I cheated on you, but I'm so sad. You're like, damn, he's having a tough time. It really.
Danny Brown
I understand.
Host
Don't buy it. I'm like, wow. Yeah, he really has a lot going on.
Danny Brown
Sounds like a struggle with discipline.
Host
Yeah, well, rap used to be, like, when we were kid. I mean, you're a little bit older than me, but when I was a kid, it was about, like, I had nothing. And now I'm. And then I made a lot of money, and now I'm celebrating it, right? And now it's kind of like I have. I got to the top, but I, like, don't trust anyone around me.
Danny Brown
Drake started that. I don't know. I think. I mean, one thing, I feel like hip hop always been rooted in. And this tradition has always been originality. So I like just hearing different stories. And I like hearing, like, regional rap, where you can. Like, you've never been there before, but you can close your eyes and hear them describe it. And you'd be like, ah, that's what's going on in the Magnolia Projects in New Orleans. You know, like, listen to Illmatic. Like, that's Queensbridge, you know.
Host
Right.
Danny Brown
So that's what I loved about rap. Oh. Even when I listen to Dizzy Rascal I'm like this London, betting the greens. You know what I'm saying? So, yeah, take me to your hood. That's what I like. I want to know what's going on. It's like news. It's like our ghetto news. But it ain't like that no more. Cause the Internet, everybody merged in, so everybody make the same sounds now. You know, it's just some regional shit everywhere.
Host
But you think it's fucked up that a kid could listen to like. Like Spotify? You listen to any song ever?
Danny Brown
No, I think that's actually great, to be honest. Cause I know a lot of kids
Host
and we miss it for two months.
Danny Brown
I think that is great. Cause a lot of kids do. Could go back and do their research and do homework. I really do think that's the great part about it.
Host
But I don't get as deep, though.
Danny Brown
I know. I know some. I mean, kids that are into music, they get. Indeed. I can't say, like kids that I've known. But they all making music though, so. They do. It's some kids right now, more knowledgeable old school than me. And I'm like, what the fuck?
Host
Yeah, for me, it's just like. I think that, like, when I. I would go to the mall, I get one cd.
Danny Brown
Yeah, same.
Host
And it'd be a month.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
And I would just like. I think that I needed that time to like, just listen over and over and over again to get something. But these kids, I feel like you could just keep changing to, like, different things. I wonder if they could like, really just absorb it. Like, I remember me and my cousin got Dark side of the Moon and we. We were like 11, and we turned off all the lights and we pretended to be high. Oh, we like, imagine like one day we're gonna be high. And it worked.
Danny Brown
I've done it before. I think everybody needs one acid trip. Dark side of the Moon.
Host
Oh, you've done it too. Dark side of the Moon on real record.
Danny Brown
I mean, it made me appreciate it a lot more.
Host
Really? Yeah, I like it regular style.
Danny Brown
I didn't. I can't say. I mean, yeah, it's definitely a different experience.
Host
I love the Floyd dude. What's your favorite song on Dark side of the Moon?
Danny Brown
The first one.
Host
The time. Time isn't the first one.
Danny Brown
I definitely don't know the track.
Host
Yeah, that's time. No, no, the first track is. Yeah.
Danny Brown
What is it?
Host
How does it. What is it?
Danny Brown
The way that should start.
Host
Keep going, Zach.
Danny Brown
Yeah, yeah, that. That's the hardest shit.
Host
It's so sick. Best man ever. Dude, do you remember that song? I don't wanna know. Yeah, if you're playing me, keep that on the low.
Danny Brown
You know what song that guy's like getting?
Host
This is the cuck anthem, bro.
Danny Brown
Yeah, that is correct. If you listen to a lot of those songs and you just think about it, like, you be like, man, they tripping. I remember that one backstreet song where they just singing about getting a boner on the dance floor. Which is that called, like, when we always grinding. I get so excited. It's all about getting a boner. I can't fight it. Dance for real.
Host
So as a bar misfit, you're making
Danny Brown
it hard for me. They just sing about boners.
Host
Just Rebecca Schwartz and the angriest boner you ever had in your entire life. Just like I need to 13 year old boner.
Danny Brown
They're singing very aggressively about getting the boner too. Dude like it excited, like, damn. It's like the blue ball started kicking in. Like, ooh, how I like, try, but I can't fight it. You making it hard for me. How was 4N in the booth singing in unison? You. You making it hard for me without breaking a lap.
Host
It's with your friends. Yeah.
Danny Brown
Who wrote that shit, man? Honestly, it is actual. That's like songwriting genius. Yeah.
Host
What is the girl part? The girl feel a little poke coming through.
Danny Brown
Yeah, the girl part says feel. I feel alone coming through. Oh, you. Oh, you know I can't help it. Those are some freaky niggas, man.
Host
Rfe has to come back.
Danny Brown
Yeah, man, just six. They trying to be too cool. They trying to be too cool. They don't want to sing about boners and shit no more. Cause we all couldn't relate to that. Like, yeah, I remember them bitch grinding on me. That motherfucker. You got to put the mushroom under the drawband, under the elastic. You got your dick on your belly button.
Host
You like, man, just these guys. Like, I'm so rich and I'm so sad. Like, that was the purest shit.
Danny Brown
You got your dickhead peeking out the bushes. Yeah.
Host
12 o'. Clock.
Danny Brown
Yeah, he's just up there like, yeah, but how did they. How did they convince her to sing that part? I feel like as a woman, I'd have been like, hold up, man. Y' all niggas are here tripping.
Host
She thought it was a cool song, probably.
Danny Brown
That's like dance. That's like wedding reception.
Host
I know you've like, people have danced with their grandmas to that song.
Danny Brown
That's what I'm saying. It's crazy now. It's crazy now when you really think about who was cutting the rug to this freak.
Host
Dancing for the. For us boys was bar mitzvah era. And it was just our parents were there and we were just like, yeah, like, I have a couple friends just let it go inside the pants.
Danny Brown
In Detroit. In Detroit, we had ghetto tech, though. So that's like the most like blatant, like, sex over sexually music ever. So that's what I was growing up, like teenagers and shit.
Host
There was nothing left to DJ Assault.
Danny Brown
Yeah, DJ Assault. Ass and titties and shit.
Host
Oh, he. That's ass and Titan.
Danny Brown
That's what I used to. That's in Detroit as a kid. That's what we used to hear when we go to like parties and we didn't hear like top 40 radio. It was just DJ assault mixtapes. There's some holes in his house.
Host
I wonder how he came up with that.
Danny Brown
Yeah, he's amazing. He has so many.
Host
He's like the kind of the DJ Rashad of Detroit. Is he like the local legend?
Danny Brown
He's a super legend. Super duper legend. I mean, he was way before DJ Rashad, so I can't even say DJ
Host
Rashad in the sense that like footwork or like Chicago.
Danny Brown
Yeah. I mean, I don't know if it was more jit music because that's what we did in Detroit was more jitting. So I don't know if Assad was just more about hoes. Step up your clothes, hoes get naked.
Host
And it would just be like not even a full sentence over and over.
Danny Brown
And then I just remember just being like, you know, you in the eighth grade, you just literally just humping a on the ground. You just doggy styling bitches. Just all clothes at the school. Homecoming luck. Yours is in that. You wonder how teenage pregnancy was running rampant around that motherfucker.
Host
Remember how angry the boners would get. Those are the most raging.
Danny Brown
That's what I came for these days.
Host
I'm like, what are you? You're a loser.
Danny Brown
I remember especially high school.
Host
They'd be like shaking. They'd be like, you don't remember. You're like Super Saiyan.
Danny Brown
You don't remember them. Terry Cloth Aniche joggin suits and shit. The Fat Farms boners in them was insane.
Host
Well, terry cloth is good for.
Danny Brown
That's what I. That was my strip club where.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah. Fat, firm, drunk and so what are
Host
Detroit strip clubs like?
Danny Brown
I haven't been in over 20 years. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Host
Were they more industrial?
Danny Brown
I mean I would be scared. That's what shit happened at. Shit.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah. That'd be gangster shit. It's too. I'm too. I'm a bitch ass nigga.
Host
Did you ever. This is a stupid question and I'm embarrassed, but did you ever have that, the eight Mile style sex ever?
Danny Brown
What's that?
Host
When he's like in the factory with Brittany Murphy? Because it was a good.
Danny Brown
I got my dick sucked in a Burger King freezer.
Host
That's pretty much the same thing.
Danny Brown
Yeah, yeah, I guess you right. It was the same. I was working at Burger King.
Host
It's probably romantic. Yeah.
Danny Brown
Bottom onion rings and shit. Yeah, yeah. And it was. It was like my first time really getting a blowjob and I couldn't really respect it because it was in a cold ass freezer. So I didn't really know the powers
Host
of it your own self.
Danny Brown
I mean, I'm just saying I wish it was in a more comfortable setting. Then I really would have, you know, been like damn. So I didn't really. I don't really count it because I didn't know how good it really could get.
Host
Well, my first handy was in the back of a girl's parents car. And it took an hour and a half.
Danny Brown
That was great.
Host
It was the most painful experience of my entire life. She was like starting a. Like a fucking lawnmower. She was like pulling and I was like, stop.
Danny Brown
And I was like, I just wish I wasn't a horny kid like that. I wish. I just.
Host
But then I was like, I have to like come otherwise I can't call it a hand job.
Danny Brown
Oh.
Host
So then I was like.
Danny Brown
So you were committed to the bit?
Host
Yeah. And then I busted him. I busted my face.
Danny Brown
Oh yeah.
Host
My first hand job. I busted my own damn face. I mean after an hour and a half of just.
Danny Brown
Yeah, definitely. I'm sure that would happen.
Host
Humiliating. I know her full name and I, I want to say it. I would, but you know where you are in your parents infinity.
Danny Brown
That's crazy.
Host
It's so funny. The only part like not having money sucks.
Danny Brown
Oh.
Host
But. But getting like the, the girl part is kind of like the one thing that was kind of a little bit fun.
Danny Brown
What do you mean?
Host
It was like a video game. Well, it's just like I, I had a. I remember. So I had no money and so I say, well, you know all guys take you out to like a, to like a restaurant or a bar and I didn't like have the Money for it. So I was like, why don't I cook for you? And I had this, like, spaghetti bolognese that I priced down to, like, $7.30.
Danny Brown
See, this is different cultures going on, right?
Host
So then I make her this. This heavy meat sauce spaghetti, and then. But I would buy ground turkey, which was cheaper than ground beef. And then I realized, years later. I know. I realized that it's got like. That. It's not. They didn't go to sleep or anything, but it's like a tryptophan. And I was like. I was making, like. In retrospect, it was like a date. It wasn't a. No, I'm. Come on. It's not. I know. They. Nothing like that happened, but it was like, you shouldn't give a girl a sleepy meal. You know, it's just not the right thing to do. But it was affordable. It was an affordable sleepy. But I was like, in retrospect, I'm like, turkey does Is a sleep. It's not Cosby. I'm not Cosby.
Danny Brown
But. Yeah, see?
Host
Thank you for your support.
Danny Brown
I don't know. When I was broke, I was moving mountains.
Host
I know. So I should have gone that route.
Danny Brown
Yeah. Put the dick on the truck.
Host
It sounds like you've conquered a beast.
Danny Brown
No, never felt like that. It never felt like that. It just felt like. Cause, you know, you're doing something you really don't want to do, and I feel like anytime you're doing something like that, you're not gonna feel.
Host
But didn't you think that you're being like, you're giving them, like, the ple. You're being a nice guy to them?
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
To the mountains.
Danny Brown
Like charity. Yeah.
Host
And they were like, thank you.
Danny Brown
I don't know. Cause they be like, he ain't pulled back up.
Host
Wait, they insulted you afterwards?
Danny Brown
I mean, they want you to come back.
Host
Oh, they want you to come back.
Danny Brown
Yeah. I don't know if I can do it.
Host
I don't know if I could do it.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
And then you hit rock bottom, and then you're like. Yeah. Then you're like, bro, that's the worst walk on the way to the.
Danny Brown
Oh, the walker's round two.
Host
No, the round two of that.
Danny Brown
I caught the bus over there to that bitch. The bus at the bus stop. Cold as hell. Leaving, like, what the fuck I got going on? Oh, in the Detroit window. Yeah. You just looking out the window on the bus like, man, what have I done with my life? Just staring down grand river like, this
Host
is the misogyny episode. I love it. I'm having such a good time. And don't get me started on their stories.
Danny Brown
Can they go, I'm not like that no more. I'm definitely a changed man. I meditate 30 minutes a day now.
Host
Me, too. I used to be like that, too.
Danny Brown
So, you know, that was my 20s, man. I feel like once I got, like, of age to. My frontal lobe was developed.
Host
Yeah. I feel like mine is still developing.
Danny Brown
I didn't make those choices because I could think about shit I used to do, man. I'd be like, I can't believe. I'm definitely. No, I can't believe I even thought about doing shit like that.
Host
Yeah, but you live, you learn, bro.
Danny Brown
Yeah, definitely. Definitely. I'm so happy now.
Host
When you look at Patrick, can you tell, like, do you have, like, a sense of, like, how many times he said the word when it was in a song?
Danny Brown
No, I look like he paused.
Host
What?
Danny Brown
He look like he paused.
Host
He paused. He's gay. What?
Danny Brown
No. He'll pause on that part, then continue on.
Host
He looks like a pauser.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
What about Zach over here? How many times is. Do you have, like, a sense of how many times?
Danny Brown
Roughly 56.
Host
Zach, he's Jewish.
Danny Brown
Roughly a 56. But just while he's. Is it like in the shower or something?
Host
In the shower, and then he's still gonna. Oh, shit, it's so funny. It's like masturbating, right? It is like locking.
Danny Brown
Why. Why are y' all so obsessed with saying that word in the song?
Host
Because it looks so cool.
Danny Brown
I have found myself.
Host
I've never done it.
Danny Brown
I do say nigga a lot, but it's almost like a. It's like an assist. Yeah, it's like a pass. No, I'm talking about when words like. Cause you can fit another word there. But it just rolls so great into another word.
Host
It just, like, in rhyme form, when a black guy calls me that, it feels like flying.
Danny Brown
Cause sometimes I'll be like, hold up. I'd be like, hold up, man. It ain't enough niggas in here. Let me throw some niggas in this bitch.
Host
I agree. There aren't enough.
Danny Brown
On my third draft. On my third draft, I drop some more niggas in there. But this new album I've actually made, I don't really even cuss that much much. It's very. It wasn't done on purpose, though. But then all this stuff like, damn, I probably cuss.
Host
Is it. You think cussing is hack?
Danny Brown
No, definitely not. It just came out that way.
Host
No, it's easy.
Danny Brown
I think cuss. I think you know what it is. Rhyming cuss words is hack.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
So if you. Anytime you do that. Oh, man.
Host
Yeah. Yeah. Duck. You could rhyme with fuck.
Danny Brown
But if you say fuck twice.
Host
Have you ever rhyme fuck with fuck?
Danny Brown
Nah, but I rhyme. I do rhyme twice.
Host
Rhyme twice is fun. If it's an emphasis on.
Danny Brown
Cameron is like the best ever.
Host
He's the best at it.
Danny Brown
He created that kind of, you know.
Host
I love the watch. Trying. It's great.
Danny Brown
Dude, I'm trying.
Host
You should move to New York and chill with fuck.
Danny Brown
No, it's too cold. And I would get fat.
Host
Why would you get fat?
Danny Brown
It's just because you can get whatever you want at any time of day. Like, I'm not trying to eat chopped cheeses at 4am but you want to
Host
be around those people.
Danny Brown
I mean, where I'm at, Austin, where I'm at, it's more of a communal situation. They don't even like me ordering Uber eats in my neighborhood.
Host
Really.
Danny Brown
They only want like outside motherfuckers hanging out over there.
Host
Oh, you're like a hippie commune situation.
Danny Brown
It's like hill country.
Host
Hill country. Hill people.
Danny Brown
I guess.
Host
Yeah. Sounds.
Danny Brown
It's real communal. I really like it. I go to the market. They want you to. It's all like, only local shops, really. So.
Host
Yeah, you wave at your neighbor. Hey.
Danny Brown
I mean, you got to Jeff. Everybody just drive golf carts.
Host
Do you do a nod?
Danny Brown
No, we kick it. They pull up, them motherfuckers talk. Cause they like. I say, they want to know who you are. You living over here? Pulled up. They in your business?
Host
Yeah, yeah.
Danny Brown
You know, so it's fun.
Host
Who's your favorite one in the neighborhood?
Danny Brown
In my neighborhood? Oh, I got a. It's a lady up the street from Michigan.
Host
Oh, she's family.
Danny Brown
Yeah. So, you know, she always invite me over to watch the Lions game and. But I like to smoke and so
Host
she doesn't like you smoking in there?
Danny Brown
I wouldn't say that. I just don't even want to bring it up, really.
Host
She's like a mom.
Danny Brown
Like, I can't just sit there and watch football without, you know, with a blunt, you know.
Host
Why don't you just ask her? Why don't you? Why don't you? Why don't you ask her if she plays it?
Danny Brown
But I'm not the biggest football fan. I like watching football. If I'm betting on it, I'm more of a basketball. And they. They were. They're not basketball people.
Host
Maybe you should get all these just.
Danny Brown
But they do though. Like. Like in the summer they were watching like the. The Stanley cup finals and on like a big ass projector just.
Host
Oh, in the neighborhood?
Danny Brown
Yeah, Just outside. Everybody just hanging out, watching them.
Host
Do they know you're a famous rapper?
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
Yeah. And they think that's cool. I mean, that should make you the most popular guy.
Danny Brown
I'm definitely like the youngest. It's like, so you're living with like 60% over 60 years old.
Host
You're living with 60 year old hill people?
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
And you're like Jeff.
Danny Brown
Mm.
Host
Yep.
Danny Brown
They real passive aggressive too.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
Yeah. When you be fucking.
Host
You the only black guy? Yeah. Yeah. Really?
Danny Brown
I think so.
Host
And you got green ass hair.
Danny Brown
Yeah, they like it.
Host
Really? They're like, look at this hippie over here.
Danny Brown
Yeah. They always be like, yeah, but you know, Austin is kind of like that. It's cool. Keep Austin weird type shit.
Host
So I fit in mother shit.
Danny Brown
Well, like I say, I'm more. I'm literally like maybe an hour from downtown Austin.
Host
Oh, so you're in the sticks?
Danny Brown
Yeah, like I said, hill country.
Host
You got a gun?
Danny Brown
Hell yeah.
Host
What kind of gun do you have?
Danny Brown
I got a staccato.
Host
What does that sound? It sounds like music to me.
Danny Brown
I mean, staccato, it's very expensive. It's really used for like Olympic shooters and like that. It's like one of those type of professional shooting guns. That's why I don't hear rappers rap about it. Cause they cost too much.
Host
Really?
Danny Brown
You never heard nobody say, don't got the staccato. But they like talking about expensive things they don't buy. They talk about the cheapest guns, though.
Host
They do.
Danny Brown
The worst guns. That's a plex. Yeah.
Host
Who's the biggest dickhead in rap that you've ever met?
Danny Brown
What's the definition of dickhead?
Host
I don't know. Just being a dickhead.
Danny Brown
Like, being mean?
Host
Yeah, being mean.
Danny Brown
Probably mean. Really?
Host
Are you mean other rappers?
Danny Brown
It was a time.
Host
You're like Patrice o'.
Danny Brown
Neill. Yeah, definitely.
Host
You're like.
Danny Brown
You're a f. I definitely. I really look up to Patricia o'. Neill.
Host
How did you do that? Like, how did you. Like, how did that. Like, how did you act mean to them? Like, how did you establish dominance like that?
Danny Brown
Just get drunk as fuck and say the first thing to come to your head.
Host
You'd be like, you suck at rap.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
Yeah. You're a bitch.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
Who? Is there someone you.
Danny Brown
I wouldn't want To. I wouldn't want to.
Host
Is there something. Have you made amends?
Danny Brown
I mean, I made amends. Whatever. You know, once you get sober, you gotta. You gotta do that thing.
Host
You gotta like, hit up Drake and be like, I think you're a good guy, actually.
Danny Brown
Yeah, I'm not Drake. I never met Drake or anything.
Host
You've never met him. We gotta chill with him.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
It's so incredible he got to be famous. He's like, how is that?
Danny Brown
Oh, because he gives all you Jewish guys.
Host
It's our dream, Hope. It's our number one dream. It was so meaningful to me.
Danny Brown
What about Jack Harlow?
Host
He's Jewish.
Danny Brown
I don't know.
Host
I don't know how to look at him, knowing everyone who's Jewish. No, he's not Jewish. He's not on my list.
Danny Brown
Okay.
Host
Shin Blizzle.
Danny Brown
Who are some Jewish rappers?
Host
Bob Dylan, technically.
Danny Brown
Yeah. I could say by Dylan. By Dylan had some bars.
Host
Yeah. Subterranean. I don't know. We shouldn't. We shouldn't talk about Jewish anymore.
Danny Brown
Okay?
Host
I don't want to talk about it anymore. I'm sick of it. I wish I could quit. I looked up foreskin reattachment, you know.
Danny Brown
Why would you want to do that?
Host
Because BB was being such an ass. You can do that though, apparently. But you don't regain it ain't going to look sensitivity. It'd be cool if I got a different color.
Danny Brown
Oh, I guess. I guess you could imagine if I
Host
had a different color at the end. Helmet.
Danny Brown
You can. You can get the style. A different style?
Host
Different style.
Danny Brown
You can get a style like pick your. Switch your up, like go hoodie or turtleneck.
Host
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, mine would be an intellectual. He'd be like a beep. Nick.
Danny Brown
You can get like. You know what I'm saying? You want to leave extra skin right here, you know?
Host
Yeah, yeah. Get a little.
Danny Brown
I'm all down for dick surgery, man.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
I'm all down with it.
Host
I'm too scared, like, about.
Danny Brown
I don't give a fuck if I get to like 60. Like, fuck it. Just give me the long dong Silver.
Host
Yeah, yeah.
Danny Brown
And just stay hard all the time.
Host
Yeah, yeah.
Danny Brown
I don't gotta have no feeling in it.
Host
Yeah, yeah.
Danny Brown
That's the only reason. It's the only reason why I work out, really. It's just to be able to fuck with them in my 60s.
Host
Yeah, it's true. Because I. I did realize, like, I would always think that, like, if you can't have sex anymore, you.
Danny Brown
That's why they. That's why you see old people and they be angry all the time. I mean, because they ain't talking.
Host
They got the. You could just take a thing, though.
Danny Brown
But no, I mean, yeah, but it's all about your physical prowess.
Host
Yeah, but my grandma's doing unspeakable.
Danny Brown
You know, like I told you, these hill country, these motherfuckers. Oh, and in shape.
Host
So you think that they're having key parties.
Danny Brown
They definitely getting freaky.
Host
Yeah. Really? And they're judging your ass for being a rapper.
Danny Brown
No, they don't judge me. They like that shit. They like you because they like, man, he cool.
Host
Yeah.
Danny Brown
You know, and then they know, like, they know I had got sober and all that kind of. So.
Host
So they're impressed.
Danny Brown
Yeah, I mean, they just. They know I'm not partying all no wild shit.
Host
Yeah, it's cool, Jeff.
Danny Brown
I mean, because, you know, it's a rapper moved to your neighborhood, you think you're gonna be having parties and. Or something. I don't know.
Host
Yeah, free bodies, perhaps. Baby oil. I mean, were you ever invited?
Danny Brown
I was never that cool.
Host
You is cool to. I agree.
Danny Brown
I don't think I was cool enough for the free.
Host
I would have been like, I did it. You know, I'm freak off level now.
Danny Brown
Yeah.
Host
I'm white part.
Danny Brown
I mean, you got it. Sometimes you got to do shit for the story.
Host
Yeah, of course. Yeah. Did you know that stuff was happening?
Danny Brown
Fuck no. But I was definitely entertained by the trial.
Host
Yeah, it was pretty good.
Danny Brown
Yeah, I was tapped in.
Host
What was your favorite. What was your favorite little moment?
Danny Brown
I'm just. I mean, to be honest, like, the way it all started out and how much was said and what the allegation like, you know, like you thought it was way more like crazier than. Did you sound like, just to find out he was just hiding behind curtains in hijab, jacking off, squirting baby oil. You know what I'm saying? We thought it was like huge orgies with all famous people and politicians, but nah, this nigga was just jerking off at hijab, squirting oil on niggas. It's basically like, yeah, now he doing fine. That's the worst jail time ever.
Host
If you film that. That's Jackass 4, you know, now you gotta. You go to jail for it.
Danny Brown
But I mean, he was beating on
Host
and he was a. Yeah, that was not good.
Danny Brown
So. No, but. But what they said, jerking off, baby. What the rumors was that was happening versus what was presented in the courtroom is. Is two different worlds.
Host
Well, I. I heard that he was having sex with the dad from.
Danny Brown
Yeah, like all these rumors.
Host
Dad from Urkel show.
Danny Brown
Yeah. And then Carl Winter, TD Jakes and all that shit. Like, and. But it was none of that. It was none of that. When you heard he just hiring.
Host
So he did have sex with Carl Winslow.
Danny Brown
I don't know. I don't know. But I'm saying that wasn't in the trial. None of that shit was.
Host
Go home, Steve. Imagine walking down to the movie, he goes, go home, Steve. That's like the shit of Urkel Carl Winslow.
Danny Brown
Imagine Carl Winslow ain't never met Diddy in his mother life. He just chilling at the crib. And all of a sudden he just look up and everybody talking about he diddy fucked him. He like, what the fuck is going on right here, man? You get what I'm saying? And n believe it. And motherfuckers believe this shit. Like you still. That shit happened years ago. I believed it. People that rumored been out. But I'm just saying, like, I feel bad for him. You gotta have some sympathy for the guy. Like, he ain't like, he like some crazy A list actor. Like, he working all the time. Who knows if he trying to get new jobs and shit now. Like, he like, man, I been doing auditions. They thinking I did he at the freakos. Like, who came up with that?
Host
It's such a random guy. And I've been.
Danny Brown
That's what I'm saying. That's why I feel bad for him. Cause I don't believe that shit.
Host
Of course he Carl Wizard.
Danny Brown
I don't believe that shit. I don't believe that shit. No, man.
Host
It's so easy to believe anything you're told these days. Yeah.
Danny Brown
Especially after hearing the trial. Diddy ain't fucking. I'm just saying, I feel. Just imagine Cars Winslow just chilling at the crib and you just on Twitter, like, ugh. His mentions just started going crazy. He getting memes and shit. He like, oh, it's not true. Like, that kind of shit make motherfuckers jump off bridges and shit, man.
Host
It's so not true.
Danny Brown
Like, I feel bad. Like, duh. That's why I'm off social media, dawg. That's why I'm done with that shit, man. I don't want to know. And then just imagine if you is a motherfucker that's off social media. You ain't watching. If you don't even know these allegations is out here, then you. You just hanging out at Chipotle niggas looking at you crazy. Like, everybody giving me the one eye. Like, what's going on?
Host
Doesn't even know that. People think.
Danny Brown
Did somebody just say. Somebody get bold and say some weird to you. You're like, what the fuck is going on?
Host
People are like snickering looking at you. Yeah, come on, dude. That's amazing. I think that's great.
Danny Brown
That's why I hate the Internet.
Host
Yeah, I hate it too.
Danny Brown
And no one does any fact checking to find out ain't nobody checked on their homies. There's a lot of car. Check in on Carl, see how he doing, man.
Host
All right. If he wants to come on the show, I definitely.
Danny Brown
He do need to speak his part.
Host
Can I say something?
Danny Brown
I think maybe that's why it's still lingering like this, because he ain't never really addressed it.
Host
We need to hear from him.
Danny Brown
Is he still living?
Host
I hope so.
Danny Brown
Imagine if he did and then n just started saying, you fuck Diddy. That's my legacy now.
Host
Danny Brown, everyone. Did you have called Starbucks.
Danny Brown
Thank you, brother. Sam.
Episode: DANNY BROWN Talks Diddy, BBWs, 50 Cent
Date: January 2, 2026
Guest: Danny Brown
This loose, wildly candid episode features rapper Danny Brown in conversation with Adam Friedland. The two bounce between memories of Detroit and coming up in rap, wild tales of relationships, and sharp commentary on hip-hop culture, media rumors, and the experience of being famous and growing older. They blend crude humor and earnest confessions in a way only the Adam Friedland Show manages, with Danny bringing an unabashedly honest voice to topics from industry near-misses to personal vices and social perceptions.
Danny Brown’s episode is a raw, unguarded, and often hilarious tour through the realities of fame, the awkwardness of male youth, and the weirdness of online gossip and modern hip-hop. With candor and wit, Danny weaves stories of struggle, wild escapades, self-reflection, and ultimately, growth.
Notable Closing Quote:
"I feel like music is … a never-ending quest to get better. And now … maybe 30 years after I’m dead, some kid is sampling my records and making hit songs out of them … I’m just making music for my legacy now." —Danny Brown (43:20)
