The Advertising Hour is just an excuse for me to take at least 60-minutes every couple of weeks to explore the goings-on in my curiosity-plagued mind.
Part therapy, part meditation, part study.
Mostly, I'm hoping to learn a little more about myself, my contemporaries and my obsessions through the study and discussion of all things advertising.
I expect to get plenty distracted along the way.
At very least I hope to light-up a few unsuspecting synapses.
It's a bonus for us all if this helps to surface unique marketing insight.

Sabrina is a marketing agency owner, author, chess master, chess commentator and soon-to-be host of the podcast 'No Bullsh*t Talks'. I admire Sabrina's approach to transparency and authenticity. Truly I'm envious that she works for an agency that brands themselves with the tagline 'The No Bullsh*t Agency'. To some, this might seem like a bold statement, but I see it as liberating. I love marketing, but it's true that the industry is full of bullsh*t. It's a beautiful thing when you meet someone that's committed to cutting through the noise and focusing on creativity without a hidden agenda. ***Check the links below to connect with Sabrina and look out for her upcoming podcast, 'No Bullsh*t Talks'*** In this episode we discuss: Is Zoom a suitable solution for recording podcasts? The pros and cons of leading with the 'The No Bullsh*t Agency' branding for Complex CreativeThe role of honesty and candour in creativity and leadershipIs Clubhouse here to stay? What motivated Sabrina to write her popular 'Chess for Children' books?Skills learned from chess that can be applied to business and marketingIs The Queen's Gambit good for chess? Sometimes I feel like every marketer secretly wants to be an entrepreneur. That their goal is to build passive income through a side-hustle, quit marketing and then work remotely from the jungles of Peru. I'm not sure why I think this way. Maybe because I've felt this way. Dave Schneider has lived this very experience. I wanted to know whether his experiences matched my expectations, or whether I've mis-sold myself. Dave sold links in the early 2010s and that helped to fund his travel around the world, before he eventually embarked on a SaaS journey with outreach software, NinjaOutreach. Dave later sold NinjaOutreach and is currently on a mission to reinvent marketing agency practices with Shortlist.io, the unagency. In this episode we discuss: Dave's advice in building SaaS products for non-developersThe trigger moment that led Dave to consider exiting NinjaOutreachLessons in successfully exiting a SaaS productHow selling NinjaOutreach impacted Dave's lifeDave's thoughts on influencer marketingHow Shortlist.io was born and what is an un-agency? I think curiosity is a characteristic, but it's also a skill. I think it takes persistence and passion to remain curious in life, as there are many obstacles or temptations that can stifle curiosity, if you allow them to. I like to think that I am curious and that I am in touch with my own curiosity. It's something I think about a lot. I love it when I stumble into conversations on this podcast where the guest and I settle in to our curiosities and it leads to new truths, lessons or thought patterns that perhaps I've never explored. Or maybe it shines a light on topics I've thought deeply about, but that I have never attempted to articulate my thoughts on. In this episode, we have two very curious minds and an hour to explore. Sam Brake Guia is the host of podcasts Brains Byte Back (where psychology meets technology) and The Loudspeaker (the definitive guide on using PR to scale a startup). In this episode we discuss: The biggest differences between podcast hosting and appearing as a guestHow to accelerate learning through asking questions (keep the mind of a 4 year old, Sam!)Approaching sensitive questions as podcast hostHow Sam ended up in Medellín and how his journey into podcasting beganDoes Medellín have a PR problem? How a positive and encouraging workplace culture helped Sam to rapidly develop new skills (shout out to Publicize!)Two of the hardest challenges faced by podcast hosts Referenced on this episode: 2 Dope Queens Podcast: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/dopequeensThe Podnews Newsletter: https://podnews.net/The Podcast Marketing Academy Course: https://counterweightcreative.co/podcast-marketing-academy/ CONNECT WITH SAM / BRAINS BYTE BACK / THE LOUDSPEAKER : Brains Byte Back is available on your favourite podcast platform. Note: Sorry that my mic audio is a little sub-par in this episode. I have no idea what happened, I might try and fix it up and re-upload this at a later date with better audio if I managed to improve it. I think it's still plenty listenable, though. This episode was not only fun, but it was inspiring. Max's positive mentality is impossible to miss. He's Mr No Excuses. We talk in detail at the beginning of the episode about Max's former life as a carnival owner and this episode felt like a late night walk home from a fair with a new friend. If it were a carnival, I feel like I take the role of the stand-in ringmaster, filling in for the veteran Master of Ceremonies who was unable to fulfil his duties due to indulging in one too many Jack and Cokes earlier in the day. Max is the star attraction. The unmistakable showman that people travel from neighbouring towns to see. I think given his visual impairments, he probably doesn't entertain with a trapeze act, but he's so damn determined that, that's a challenge he won't let escape him forever. For now, he does a little magic, cracks a few jokes and maybe belts out a country hit or two to close the night. In this episode we discuss: Maxwell's former life and career as a Texan carnival ownerLessons in persistence and confidence that Maxwell took from his fatherHow Maxwell learned the skills to sell carnival equipment online, despite his visual impairments and having no previous online business, website building or online marketing experienceCommon website accessibility issues that Maxwell encounters and his advice to businesses on how they can make their websites more accessibleMaxwell's thoughts and experiences with smart assistantsThe motivation for Maxwell's transition into blogging and sharing his experiences as a blind entrepreneurThe story that led to Maxwell publishing his first book 'Leading You Out of The Darkness Into the Light'Lessons Max has learned from public speakingHow Maxwell sets himself challenges and what challenges he's planning for the futureThe personal and business benefits Maxwell has found through podcastingOur thoughts on podcast sponsorships and monetisation Referenced on this episode: The Web Accessibility Initiative: https://www.w3.org/WAI/[Book] Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert: https://amzn.to/3tslNTUMarsedit 4 Blog Editor App: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/marsedit-4-blog-editor/id1198319098?mt=12Podcorn, the podcast sponsorship platform: https://podcorn.com/ CONNECT WITH MAXWELL: https://theblindblogger.net/https://www.linkedin.com/in/maxwellivey/https://twitter.com/maxwelliveyhttps://www.facebook.com/maxwelliveyhttps://www.youtube.com/maxwellivey SUBSCRIBE TO THE ADVERTISING HOUR: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-advertising-hour/id1517577846Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZC5jby90aGUtYWR2ZXJ0aXNpbmctaG91cg==Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3G3YLFN2TbxV9W9m93KnYWYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI2HuVI4QQkLKaZ2O3H4uOAStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcastdotco/the-advertising-hourTuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Business--Economics-Podcasts/The-Advertising-Hour-p1331527Acast: https://play.acast.com/s/the-advertising-hour ... or your favourite podcast platform! I remember back in 2001 not being able to watch the film AI because it freaked me out too much. My mind wandered and I became overwhelmed thinking about the potential impact AI might have on the world. I still haven't watched that film. I have a love/hate relationship with AI and what I know of its current use and its potential. I'm still not 100% sure whether I study AI because I deeply love the potential positive impact AI could have on the world, more simply because I'm a geek, or whether deep down I want to just arm myself with knowledge so that I can protect myself when the inevitable robot wars commence. It's easy to get carried away with the science-fiction and potential technological possibilities of AI. More recently I've been thinking a lot about systemic biases in society and how they'll develop into the future. More specifically, I've been thinking about how these systemic problems in our current society can creep into the AI solutions being built or planned. I'm worried. I want us to take control of what we're building. AI is undoubtedly a big part of our future and so we should be paying attention to all of the ways systemic biases impact us as a society and trying to ensure these biases are removed from the structures we build for our futures. Today I'm joined by Kasia Borowska to explore these topics. Kasia is has a background in mathematics, marketing and cognitive science. She is currently the Managing Director of Brainpool AI, a network of over 500 global AI and machine learning experts. Brainpool AI is on mission is to bridge the gap between academia and corporations when it comes to using AI and machine learning. They want to provide corporations easier access to the latest research and best minds in artificial intelligence. In this episode we discuss: How marketing will benefit from access to AI/ML researchWhy it's important to understand the differences between machine learning and artificial intelligence, and what these differences areWhy data bias in AI should be one of your first considerations before embarking on building an AI projectExamples of the gender and race bias risks in AIOur views on AI governance and legislationHow AI might help us to save the planet Referenced on this episode: https://www.wired.com/story/best-algorithms-struggle-recognize-black-faces-equally/https://cbmm.mit.edu/about/people/tegmarkhttps://brave.com/https://www.coursera.org/learn/ai-for-everyonehttps://www.sitevisibility.co.uk/blog/2020/12/10/applications-of-ai-in-marketing-with-kasia-borowska/ CONNECT WITH KASIA /BRAINPOOL AI: https://brainpool.ai/https://twitter.com/brainpoolaihttps://www.facebook.com/brainpoolai/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChxnWsbZgdsaRPdvi4d57VAhttps://www.linkedin.com/company/brainpool-ltd/https://www.linkedin.com/in/kasia-borowska-79a82147/ SUBSCRIBE TO THE ADVERTISING HOUR: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-advertising-hour/id1517577846Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZC5jby90aGUtYWR2ZXJ0aXNpbmctaG91cg==Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3G3YLFN2TbxV9W9m93KnYWYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI2HuVI4QQkLKaZ2O3H4uOAStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcastdotco/the-advertising-hourTuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Business--Economics-Podcasts/The-Advertising-Hour-p1331527Acast: https://play.acast.com/s/the-advertising-hour ... or your favourite podcast platform! Raj shares on the show that when he told his mother he was planning on studying AI, she thought it had something to do with UFOs. I think that she still might be right. Our episode encompasses everything from Raj's life as the founder of a content production agency, Goodman Lantern, to his experience and interests in the world of marketing technology, his history in software engineering, his ambitions as an investor and his study and thoughts on artificial intelligence. In this episode we discuss: The Goodman Lantern origin storyHow tier based pricing can help acquire customers who you may upsell more bespoke work to at a later dateHow to retain brand authenticity when outsourcing contentOur appreciation for product managersWhat does an Innovation Consultant do?Why Raj is an advocate of remote workingWhat Raj looks out for as a MarTech investorMarTech product trends, including how AI is being used in content production I tried to get clever with this podcast title. I feel uncomfortable for feeling uncomfortable about typing these show notes. I feel pathetic for even saying this in context of what Iain is experiencing. Earlier in 2020, Iain was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer following the discovery of a tumour during a medical trial. He's 31, has a background in the fitness industry and had no symptoms prior to the diagnosis. He later had brain surgery while awake. He's still being treated and has a prognosis of 5 years. Iain has set himself 2 massive challenges for the years ahead. To set a world record for the fastest marathon run as a video game character (2 hours, 57 minutes)To raise the single most amount of money for charity from a marathon run. Cancer impacts us all and yet when we discuss it, it's really easy to not discuss it. It's really easy to not talk about the things we're curious about or care about. I think this is the case for both the cancer patient but also their friends and family. It didn't come up on the podcast, but my Mum passed away from cancer just 6 weeks after being diagnosed, and with no prior awareness that she had cancer. My Mum was in the same hospital and same treatment rooms at the same time as my Grandad, who also had cancer and passed away just a few months after she did. I thought about this a lot going into the podcast. It gave me a bit of a moral dilemma. Do I record something knowing that the process might be uncomfortable for me, or do I just ignore it so that I don't have to face it? I decided the best thing was to record with Iain because to not record this would be really f***in selfish. Ultimately, I realised it wasn't about me and I just wanted to do the best I could to give Iain a platform to share his story, messages and goals. There is a little selfishness in that I wanted to explore my comfort zone as a person and as a podcaster. One of the things I learned most about when spending time in hospital with my Mum over those 6 weeks was selflessness. I think it would have been more selfish for me to have not recorded this podcast and so that little lesson helped me in recording this episode. Thanks Mum! I still am slightly concerned that people might think I recorded this episode for clickbait, or that I'm taking advantage of someone that's experienced something bad for the benefit of a podcast. I just hope that you can hear in our discussion that this isn't the case. 11 episodes in and I haven't spoken so much about hip-hop on this podcast, and so I was hyped to jump into conversation with Tom Libelt. Tom is the owner of We Market Online Courses and host of the Smart Brand Marketing podcast. The journey to where he's at today hasn't been a linear one, though. Tom was born in Poland but grew up in America. His love for music led him to train as sound engineer at Full Sail University and he quickly secured a dream rolein the early 2000s, working as a sound engineer in New York with artists including The Fugees, Alicia Keys, Gang Starr and T.I. Tom eventually jumped on the mic himself, having plenty of success with his own hip-hop group in his native Poland and carving out a niche following in Green Point NY. That wasn't all she wrote, though. As you'll quickly find listening to Tom, in the spirit of hip-hop, he keeps it moving forward. He pivoted his career and hustled hard, learning SEO, online marketing, sales and achieving early success in helping a Muay Thai world champion launch their online courses. A few years and a few business stops later and we sit here as Tom dominates the e-learning space with his business We Market Online Courses. In this episode we discuss: Tom's entry into sound engineering, inspired by his early love for music and in particular, hip-hopLessons from working with some of the world's most loved hip-hop artists, including Raekwon, ODB & Gang StarrWhy Tom decided to leave the music industry and learn sales skills from corporate environmentsThe mindset you need for unrivalled confidenceHow Tom generated his first few online marketing clients, within a few months of learning new SEO skillsTom's transition into the world of online courses, by first helping a world Muay Thai champion launch their first online course CONNECT WITH TOM: https://smartbrandmarketing.com/wemarketonlinecourses/https://smartbrandmarketing.com/https://twitter.com/tomlibelt REFERENCED ON THIS EPISODE: [Book] Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield: https://amzn.to/3pW29y2[Book] The Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss: https://amzn.to/3nEJ8y4[Book] Anything You Want by Derek Sivers: https://amzn.to/3pNKnNa[Freestyle] Fred The God Son on Hot97: https://youtu.be/xYMud_XWuBw[Song] Environment by Dave: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZMNO0BPYE0 SUBSCRIBE TO THE ADVERTISING HOUR: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-advertising-hour/id1517577846Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZC5jby90aGUtYWR2ZXJ0aXNpbmctaG91cg==Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3G3YLFN2TbxV9W9m93KnYWYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI2HuVI4QQkLKaZ2O3H4uOAStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcastdotco/the-advertising-hourTuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Business--Economics-Podcasts/The-Advertising-Hour-p1331527Acast: https://play.acast.com/s/the-advertising-hour ... or your favourite podcast platform! About Alex Williamns Alex is a serial podcaster, marketer, brother and soon-to-be teacher. He produces, hosts, edits or contributes to more than 5 podcasts, many of which in are in collaboration with his siblings. The podcasts he produces have diverse themes, but the constant between them all is that they all allow time for him and his siblings to bond, learn new skills and are expertly produced and packaged in ways you might expect from leading podcast studios. I love Alex's resourcefulness. I love his attitude. I wanted to know what it takes to produce, host and edit multiple podcasts. How do you fit that in? What do you learn? What keeps you going? Alex also adds a silent 'n' into his surname for marketing purposes (it makes it easier to find him). How smart is that?! This Episode I was going to title this podcast 'Working for sandwiches', but I realised that's probably not a useful title for a relatively new podcast that nobody is yet familiar with. Still, if you want to know how someone early in their media career applied their skills in exchange for the Lord's favourite carbohydrates... That's just the crust of this episode, though. The rest of this podcast is jammed full of audible delicacies including: How Alex built his podcasting skills and career alongside his full-time jobHow Alex used podcasting to improve his listening skills and how you can tooAlex's thoughts on career management and being at a crossroads between marketing, media, podcasting and training to become a high school teacherAlex's secrets to managing, editing or contributing to 5+ podcastsHow to find inspiration in the world around you to inspire podcast conceptsUncovering great stories from spending more time listening to your friends and familyTechnology and software that Alex and I have used to start and manage our podcasts CONNECT WITH ALEX: https://www.mechoradio.com/https://twitter.com/alexwilliamnshttps://www.instagram.com/alexwilliamns/ REFERENCED ON THIS EPISODE: The Art of Manliness podcast https://www.artofmanliness.com/podcast/One of Alex's favourite podcasters, Kyle Marshall https://twitter.com/thekylemarshall'She Has a Name Too' on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shehasanametoo/Episode 73 of My Wax Musuem https://open.spotify.com/episode/4VxDo9ruVCNzxdK2ewt56m?si=k0l7O9ugROiYWcgf_SOY-QEpisode 15 of My Wax Musuem https://open.spotify.com/episode/4PiMIzUdkhlPEiXzFGz5F1?si=HIeOEHBsRie3bwHVRioZUQDungeons & Daddies podcast: https://www.dungeonsanddaddies.com/360 Degree City podcast: https://360degree.city/ SUBSCRIBE TO THE ADVERTISING HOUR: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-advertising-hour/id1517577846Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkLnBvZC5jby90aGUtYWR2ZXJ0aXNpbmctaG91cg==Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3G3YLFN2TbxV9W9m93KnYWYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI2HuVI4QQkLKaZ2O3H4uOAStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/podcastdotco/the-advertising-hourTuneIn: https://tunein.com/podcasts/Business--Economics-Podcasts/The-Advertising-Hour-p1331527Acast: https://play.acast.com/s/the-advertising-hour ... or your favourite podcast platform! How much of procrastination is disguised as learning? Can anyone help you more than yourself? How do you know when self-help is being delivered selfishly? Sometimes I feel like there's so much self-help that I can't help myself. I consume all of it or I ignore all of it. I want to learn everyone's secrets just so that I don't miss out on the one thing that's going to untether me from all insecurities and surface whatever it is that I'm meant to be contributing to the world. I never find it but I always thank myself for trying. This is enough to make me feel better about the the week. It's a constant practice to find balance between advice and action. Patience in a pendulum. This is why I was interested in speaking with Natsune Oki, Host of LifeUpEducation.TV. Natsune has just released a book, 'The Game of Self-Domination', where she shares practical frameworks, guidance and stories that can help you achieve mental clarity, improved well-being and put you in the right frame of mind for helping you to achieve your goals. I really like Natsune's drive. I think she's more selfless than selfish. It's hard to find people like that.
