This episode blew my mind. Don’t miss it. I’m talking with John Lash. At 18, he pulled a pistol on someone and shot them dead. He got a life sentence in a US jail. But inside prison he went on a journey that led him to a passionate belief in the ideas and practices of nonviolence. In an environment where nonviolence can be risky for fear of being seen as weakness, he started to try these ideas out for real. He taught them to other prisoners. Now a free man, the ideas and practices of nonviolence are integral to John’s life. John shared his experiences of implementing nonviolence in prison. In doing so, we get a remarkable insight into prison life, how to create peer learning, and what would be better than punishment. You will also learn how nonviolence can transform your life and relationships too. Alan Donohoe is an independent film maker in his 20s. Without industry backing he managed to write, fund, direct and star in a full length feature film. It’s called “I Have A Bad Feeling About This.” It is an impressive, inspirational feat in itself – added to by the fact that it’s a very funny, enjoyable film too. They say every film is a miracle. With no industry support, this was a miracle of miracles. How did it happen? Listen in to find out. David Alnwick is a successful comedy magician. There are many things I admire about Dave. He’s super good at what he does. He is someone who is really up for life. Wherever there’s something fun, there’s Dave. And I’ve always been really struck by how good his social skills are. His interactions with people always seem so easy. I always put that down to Dave just being Dave. He’s a magician after all. I guess you need those social skills when paid to do close up magic at parties and the like. But Dave describes himself as a geeky, socially awkward teenager. He transformed himself into an optimistic, confident, socially at easy person by becoming an expert in social psychology. Then applying it himself. This is a completely different interview than the one I had planned. It’s utterly fascinating. You’ll learn how to be an attractive person, the psychological formulas involved, and some of the experiments Dave used himself to get out of his comfort zone. Sarah Ludford has spent the last several years of her life immersed in the practice of Non Violent Communication (NVC). NVC was developed by the inspirational psychotherapist Marshall Rosenberg. He sought to find a way to ensure that we all get our needs met without conflict. He wanted to understand why some appear to get pleasure from contributing to the lives of others, while some seem to get pleasure from causing hurt. He found that we all have universal needs that we seek to get met. He developed a way of communicating that gets us in touch with each other’s needs. Sarah trained directly with Marshall, and now trains people about NVC herself. Marshall’s ideas have been profoundly life changing for me. In this fascinating conversation, Sarah shares her insights into the process of Non Violent Communication, and how to use it in our daily lives. Show Notes Sarah Ludford can be reached at Connect With Compassion Check out Marshall Rosenberg teaching NVC on YouTube I massively recommend Marshall’s book Non Violent Communication The topic of Non Violent Communication is also mentioned in Episode 9 of the podcast – How To Live A Happier Life If you want to hear me trying to apply NVC, you might also enjoy listening to Episode 7 – Talking With The Enemy – where I chat about politics with someone who sees the world completely differently to me. Sarah recommended the book Reweaving our Human Fabric by Miki Kashtan.
