I can get super specific with dealer listings and see cars based on my budget. You can really have it delivered or pick it up. Mommy's walking. I think kid is walking up the slide. Really? Auto trader. Buy your car online. Really? You're listening to the archers omnibus from BBC Radio 4. Do you think dad needs a hand with her? I just let him get on with it. He offered to have her. Much my surprise. Don't complain about it, Alice. Oh, I'm not. Believe me. Anytime someone wants to take Martha for an outing is fine by me, especially at half term. I'm still looking for someone to babysit Friday evening. Friday? Pip and Stella's engagement party. Oh, yeah. I expect you're going, Marie. Yeah, probably. Oh, that's the trouble. Everyone seems to be. They're really making a big thing of it. Well, it's only once, isn't it? Hopefully. Half the county seems to be invited. I wonder how they're all going to fit into the events Barn. It's too cold to spill outside this time of year. Well, they'll manage somehow. Yeah, you're right. So, have you got the day to yourself now? Unexpectedly, yeah. What are you going to do with it? Well, I know what I should do. What? No, it's embarrassing. Well, you've got to tell me now. It's Fallon's fault. I mentioned it on Friday. Go on. Well, I told her there's someone I like and I'm never going to tell you who, so don't ask. And she said I should ask him out. Oh, well, if you like this mystery man, you should. I know. And you've got no excuse now. I know. But on that bombshell, I need to leave You, I'm afraid. No problem. Somewhere I need to be. You're right. Are you Marie? Me? Yeah, yeah, of course. You just seem a bit subdued. No, everything's fine. Okay, you enjoy your day. Thanks. And don't chicken out. Neil, I didn't think you were in today. Oh, well. Have you got a minute, Hunter? Yeah, of course. Got a bit of news. We've got a new trainee starting. Have we? Rory, Brian's son. Rory Aldridge. Well, actually he's Rory Donovan. Donovan? Yeah, long story, but yes, him. I thought he was co managing home farm with Adam. Yeah, me too. So what's changed? Oh dear. Martin Gibson rang me yesterday and told me it's happening. Just like that. Oh, you know, Martin, we did try to get hold of you and. Oh yeah, I had a hell of a time with mum. I just didn't have the energy to follow up. Any missed calls? Oh no, I understand. So this is very sudden. What's brought it on? Well, all I know is what Martin told me. Apparently Brian wants Rory to get more hands on farming experience and we're going to be providing it. So it seems. Oh, that's all I need. Hand holding a little posh boy. Well, we are a person down at the moment. I know. Since Thomas Laugh went back to Bulgaria. A know nothing kid is hardly a substitute for a skill worker. No, Hannah, I can't pretend I'm happy about it either, but. Oh, that's him. He's at the gate. Starting today. Yeah, that's why I've come in. Show him the ropes. Didn't the stream used to run quite fast here most of the year? Yeah, but because of the dams, the beavers have really slowed it down and they've made these pools. Wow. Does that mean less chance of flooding further downstream? Oh, totally, Alice. Yeah, I mean we've already had evidence of that with some of the heavy rain through the winter. Yeah, well, the pools just expanded and then they gradually let the water out over time. And all done with branches and twigs. They really are natural engineers, aren't they? Oh, Rex. Yeah? This tree, did you cut it down? Oh no, no, no, no, no. Justin and Sigourney did that. Look, you can see the teeth marks. It's huge. Yeah, it must be what, 30 centimetres across? Something like that. Astonishing. And when they felled it, that's where they get the branches for the dams. I suppose some of them, they eat the foliage too. But do you see them much? Oh, well, not really. Well, I'm sure you know they mainly work at night, but if you come in the hour or so before sunset and sit quietly. You can occasionally catch sight of one or an hour after dawn, the same. Phoebe will be fascinated to see these. Yeah, of course. Oh, thanks, Rex. You're welcome. Oh, did you hear about the Valentine's Day business with David and Ruth at the ball? No. No. It was so funny. So David thought he'd booked a really rubbish table for Saturday. Actually, not even a table, just a couple of stalls at the bar. But he'd kept it secret from Ruth. Said they had to work on Valentine's. Okay, so Ruth decided to book a table for the Friday. And then, of course, Kenton had to tell her about David's booking. I. I think I'm following this. So, to get David to the pub on Friday. Friday. Kenton pretended they were shorthanded and they needed David to do a shift in the bar. Yep. He has helped out in the past in emergencies, you know. So there was David collecting glasses and not very pleased about it when Ruth walked in all dressed up. Surprise. I mean, Fallon and I went to a comedy club that night because Harrison couldn't make it back. I thought would be a good diversion for her. That's nice. I. I didn't really do anything else for Valentine's. Well, aside from help Martha make a card for Chris. What about you, Rex? Sorry, what? Did. Did you do anything yesterday for Valentine's? Oh, no, no, no. Just worked. Big night for taxis. Yeah, of course. Are you alright? Oh, sorry, I'm in a bit of a fix. Valentine's related? Oh, I wish. No, no, My private hire license is up for renewal and normally it's just a formality, but. Was there a problem? Maybe. Probably. Oh, I don't know. There was this fair on Friday. Very flash, very drunk. Shouldn't have picked him up, really, but thought he'd make more fuss if I refused to take him. What happened? He made a complaint yesterday to Borchester Taxis. What about you? Reckons he left an expensive watch in my car. Well, did he? Well, didn't find anything when I was cleaning it out, but he's saying I must have stolen it. Oh, Rags. Took advantage of his inebriated state. That's awful. Yeah. Just as I need to prove that I'm a fit and proper person, I can't. And no license. Oh, what a horrible man. Totally complete jerk. But if he carries on with his complaint, that could be the end of my taxi earnings. We can't afford to have anyone messing around here. No, it's a serious business. Yes, I know that, but you haven't worked with livestock before, have you? Well, there are deer at Home Farm. It's not the same at all. No, no, I get that. Yeah, the deer are semi wild, aren't they? They are kept in paddocks. So as Hannah says, that's a big contrast to this indoor unit. And even compared to the outdoor unit next door, the one I manage. Well, there are lots of differences. That's why I'm here, Neil, to get wider experience. Okay, well, if there's one word you need to take home today, it's biosecurity. It's at the heart of everything we do. This is absolutely crucial, Rory. It even extends to our working clothes. All the staff wear these overalls and boots and they don't leave here. So how does that work? Well, you change into them on arrival, then at the end of your shift they go into the laundry. We'll show you where they're washed overnight. We hang up the wet ones in the morning and then they're dry for the next day. Strict rotation. Got it. In fact, we might as well get you togged up. No. Okay, then we can talk some more and maybe get you started on something simple. So where did you pick this guy up? The brew house in Mitten Street. But that was certainly not the only place he'd been drinking at. What makes you say that? Have you heard of the Felpersham Mile? I remember it. Only two belt wrecks for my drinking days. Yeah, well. Well, he was boasting about doing that and more. Well, but the Mile alone must have eight pubs in it. Nine. Well, no wonder he was in a state. So would it be worth bringing around the places he might have been, see if anyone's handed it in? Yeah, I did wonder about that. But would people really give up a valuable watch? How expensive this is? Supposed timepiece. You reckoned it was worth over ten grand. What? Yeah, gold Rolex. According to him, anyway. That's ridiculous. You must have more money than sense. Couldn't agree more, Alice. Oh, but actually, that might be to your advantage. In what way? Well, a person would have to be a real villain to walk off with something that pricey. Take some nerve. Oh, well, you might have a point, I suppose. I'm just a bit worried about being fobbed off on the phone. Maybe call round in person, talk to the man managers directly. I can give you a hand if you like. You. You split them between us and it would only take half the time. Oh, well, if you wouldn't mind. No, no, I'd like to Help I couldn't do tomorrow. I've got lessons. How we fix Tuesday? Yeah, yeah, I could do anytime, really. Afternoon, evening. Whatever works for you. Thanks, Alice. You're welcome. It's nice to be doing something about it, not just worrying. Right, first thing is to get the sow out of the ark. And the best way to do that is with a bit of feed. Now, you get that scoop into those nuts there. Okay? Nice and full. You can see she recognizes the sound. Now just dump them on the ground here. Yeah, yeah. Now grab that board, Rory, and get out of her way. Right. Keep the board between her and you. That's it. That's it. Now, while she's eating, you've got a couple of minutes to get into the ark and muck it out. Okay, Neil? Just rake it all out. Yeah, that's it. How's he doing? Oh, he's just started, really? You got him on the good stuff? Might as well. Hannah. If he can't cope with this, he's not going to cope with anything. Is that Hannah? Yeah. Just come to see how you're getting on. Actually, Hannah, there was something I wanted to ask you. Right now, you should focus on the job in hand. Oh, just very quickly, you mentioned some compulsory trail. We've all done it. Oh, lovely. Not always as soon as that, mind. Okay, lesson learned. You've got to concentrate, Rory. Fair enough. I'll. I'll talk to you later. You see what I mean? I can't see him last in the week. I mean, you know, no shade on Adam. I beg your pardon? Oh, you know, it means no criticism. It was a great worker, very resourceful. But Akram's just got this personality, you know? He's certainly been a big help to us recently, Tom. Just seems he gets on with everyone he has contact with. Yeah, he was chatting to a couple outside the shop yesterday, saying how good the tea room was, so they went and had their lunch there. Brilliant. Oh. Ah, cram. We're just singing your praises. What a way to arrive. Don't knock it. And you, you can be the first. Ooh, what's this? A packet of seeds. Are we planting these today? No, no, they're for our own personal use. It's my 75th birthday. I didn't realize. Happy birthday, Tony. Thank you. But surely I should be giving you something, not the other way around. None of us are this year, which is my choice. What do I need, really? More socks? Yet another loco for the model railway? No, I thought instead I'd give a present to the village what an innovative idea. So I'm going to spend the day going round everyone handing out these packets of seeds. All organic, I presume? Of course, harvested from the farm. Well, some are sweet pea. Bean and pea seeds. So they're flower and vegetable? Oh, yes. The rest I got from the organic seed merchant. And people can plant them in their gardens? Not just gardens. Anywhere. Guerrilla gardening encouraged, I see. In the churchyard, outside the shop, on the green. Anywhere they think could be improved with a bit of growth. In that case, I know just the place. There's a little patch at the end of our clothes. One of those bits of no man's land, you know. Doesn't belong to any of the houses, but the council doesn't seem interested either. Oh, that sounds perfect. I knew this was a good idea. Thank you, Donny. My pleasure. And happy birthday. Right. That was a very good start. I'll see you both later. Yeah. Have a good day, dad. Yeah, thanks. I think I'm going to. So it's just you and me, then, Tom? It is. Although obviously I don't begrudge dad taking his birthday off. Of course not. And Slavko's doing both milkings. Susan was saying they're flat out in the dairy at the moment. Yeah, this New Orleans really put the pressure on with the Easter rush as well. And not that Helen's complaining. Indeed not. Did seem like the ideal time for Clary to come back, but Susan couldn't quite persuade her. No, she needs to find someone sharpish, though. Mum's working her socks off in there at the moment. Perhaps Tony could give her a spare pet. So, anyway, Akram, can you cover the packing shed today? Of course. You know how it all works now. Sure. It'll mainly be on your own and afraid. Oh, no problem. I'll be on the veg beds most of the day, digging manure in, ready for planting. Oh, lovely. Smelly job. But somebody's got to do it. Oh, yes, of course. I didn't mean. So, any questions? No? Great. Well, I'll see you later, then. Absolutely. You're well organized as always. Did you say carving starts middle of next week? But you know what it's like. You think you've got plenty of time and then suddenly it's right on top of you. Ah, yes. I had half an hour, so I thought I'd make a start on the pens. And have I got this wrong, Pip, or are you trying to keep busy? Trying to take your mind off Josh not talking to you? If I am, it isn't working. Oh, he just Needs a bit more time to get used to the idea. That's easy for us to say. We've scooped the pot, haven't we? Not entirely. 30 acres isn't nothing. Well, it is compared with the rest of the farm. Plus a cottage. I don't think that's how Josh sees it. I mean, have you seen the state of it? Did I tell you about Hannah's news? Said Stella, trying to change the subject. She was spitting ve this last night. Why? Rory's been foisted on her, like, with no advance warning at Barrow Farm. Apparently Brian's decided the boy wonder needs to learn all about pigs. That's very sudden, isn't it? Typical Brian. Well, yes. Has an idea over breakfast and expects it to be implemented by lunchtime. You're so well out of that. You're telling me. He's such a contrast to Louis. I mean, like this week, despite it being short notice, he had no problem with me taking the time off. Will Louis be coming to the party? I hope so. I mean, I did explain to him about Zach coming, having been away over Christmas. When is the last time you saw Zach? Ages. It's so different from my family. I can't tell you how excited I am that you're going to meet him at last. Me too. And it'll be great to have him in the run up. I mean, my brother loves a party. He's bound to have some great ideas. More the merrier. Literally, I hope. What about Isabelle and Lila? No, no, definitely not, I'm afraid. Neither of them? No, Lila's skiing and Isabelle's on this course in Inverness. It's a long way to come. Yeah, we will hook up sometime. But you know those two, they're always more of a team anyway. Yes. You're obviously closest to dessert. Absolutely. Me and my little bro. Akram. Afternoon, Tom. What's happened in here? Ah, I'm trialing a new system. Instead of bringing the veg to the boxes, I'm bringing the boxes to the vet. Shall I show you? Box on trolley. Box to weighing station. Weighing station. And then you're filling up all in one place. Okay. But you don't seem to have done very many boxes yet. No, it did take some time to think it out and rearrange everything, but now that's done, I think we're going to zip through. Just half an hour. Tell you, Rosie. All right. Oh, wow. Yeah, that's the effect I usually have on women. What's it like? Pip, this is my brother. So nice to meet you at last. Pip. Likewise. But what's happened to this kitchen? It looks like Underwood's Food hall in here. Well, I didn't want Stella having to cook tonight, so I picked up a couple of things on the way. A couple of things? Including my favorite crisps. Oh, here's any good. And it's your birthday, Pip, isn't it? Well, actually, that's not till tomorrow. Well, close enough. How old? 33. Oh, and you've got two brothers, right? Yeah, Josh and Ben. Boss them around, do you? Yeah. Chance to be a fine thing. Quite right, too. I never took any nonsense from Stella. Cheeky. I'll get it. Just take everything he says with a picture. Anyway. There you go. Oh, thank you very much. This all looks so delicious. It's my pleasure. Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize you had company. Oh, don't mind him. It's just my brother Zach. How you doing? Very pleased to meet you. Tony. Is Pip's some sort of uncle? First cousin, once removed, I think. My father was Pip's great uncle. Right. Look, I don't want to intrude. I just wanted to give you this. Oh, your birthday seeds. Thank you. One for you, Pip. Thank you. It's my birthday today, Zach, so I'm giving people packets of seeds rather than us giving him presents. Bit random or is this some sort of local custom? Oh, no, no, it's just I thought it would be a no bother. If it's your birthday, you better have a glass of this. Oh, well, if you're sure. Totally. We're already celebrating Pip's birthday, which is actually tomorrow. There you go, buddy. Thanks very much. Act. Cheers. Cheers. Back in a minute. Oh. Where are you going? Just to the car. Got a bit more food to bring him. Where's he going to put it? That's my brother for you. Never does anything by heart. He seems a very, very nice chap. Yeah, doesn't he? Oh, do you think so? What's that? Delight. Oh, I'm so pleased. Right, I think we'll call it a day. There again, Tom, I am very sorry. Don't worry about it. I really thought I was helping. Oh, there you are. What are you still doing in here? Oh, yeah, my fault, I'm afraid. Donnie, I was expecting you in the farmhouse any minute for my birthday meal. Really, Akram, it's fine. What's going on? I thought I'd come up with a better way of organizing the pecking, but it didn't work out. We had to put everything back. Back how it was. But it's great that you care and that you've got ideas. There are always ways we can improve. Just not that way. Well, actually, can I be frank, Tom? Of course. If given a choice. I do really prefer the outdoor jobs. Oh, right. Today, I'd actually rather have been doing what you were doing. Really? Oh, yes. Even if it was shoveling manure. Good night, Rosie. Can't you come back after you've put her to bed, Pipe? She can't leave her on her own, can she? I'll see you tomorrow, though, Zach. Okay. And thanks again for all the food and the drink. Oh, you're welcome. Bye, then. Bye. See ya. Sweet girl, Rosie. Yeah. And what about Pig? Oh, yeah, her too. You seem very happy together. Yeah, we are. Good. But. What? Is this something you're not saying? No. Well, just that Pip comes with a farm attached, doesn't she? Well, I'm not marrying her because of that. I know you're not, Stella. What? I mean, she's not gonna be moving away, is she? Ever. So you're gonna be tied to this village probably for the rest of your life. What's wrong with that? Oh, I get it. What? I saw your face when Tony was here. I could tell what you were thinking. I wasn't thinking anything. Yes, you were. But Ambrose is some sort of inbred backwater, weren't you? No. Well, come on. With the seeds and his great first cousin twice removed. We're just a bit wicker man, that's all. No, it isn't. And the whole setup here, you've been working on massive farms. And now it looks like you're settling for toy town. I'm getting married. I'm not giving up my job where I have an influence on thousands of acres of land, as it happens. That's good. Thought you were happy for me. I am. As long as you thought through all the consequences. I have. Good. So there's nothing more to say, is there? Hannah. How's Rory been getting on in here? Well. Oh, not good, actually, Neil. I was gonna say he's doing better than I'd expected. Oh? He's thrown himself into it and he seems to pick things up quickly. Yeah, well, there's no denying he's a bright lad, but. What? I'm still not convinced he's gonna last long term. Yeah, I know what you mean. It's all very well doing this kind of work for a day or two. And quite another making a career out of it. Don't get me wrong. I've got nothing against him personally, but you've got to look at his track record. He disappeared off to have this fancy career in London and he obviously failed at that. To be fair, we don't know that he failed. As I understand it, after Stella resigned, he came back to help out at Home Farm. How long has that lasted? A few months. And now he pitches up here. I just don't know about his stickability. Well, let's just take it one day at a time. Sure. How's the head? Oh, that's fine. Because if you don't mind me saying, you didn't look at your best first thing. You can blame Zach for that. Stella's brother. I'm really not used to staying up that late on a school night. Right, then, what's on this afternoon? Ah, have you had your lunch, Rory? I have cheese sandwich and crisps. No pork, no ham, no bacon. Good, good. Are you going to be with Neil this afternoon in the outdoor unit? Okay. Yeah. You need to learn how to work around sows with piglets. Great. But I hope I'll be working with you again soon, Hannah. Yeah, I expect so. You've got a real passion for these animals. And the way you set such high standards, it's very inspiring. Oh, well, you know, we all try to do our best. I didn't realise when you said the other day, but isn't it half term this week? It is, yeah. But Martha's with Christmas Chris this afternoon. Oh, great. So is that a map of the city? Yes, and I've marked all the pubs and bars on the Philpersham Mile. Oh, it's very organised, Rex. Oh, what are the ones in red? Oh, they're the obvious student bars, plus a couple of really rough pubs. What, the sort of place you don't think your man would go to? From the look of him, yeah. We can always try them if we don't have any luck elsewhere. So I've just split them in half each east, west. As good a division as any. I'll take the east, shall I? You are sure about this, are you, Alice? Well, I wouldn't be here if I wasn't. It's just, you know, going around a load of pubs and bars. I won't be getting any pangs, if that's what you mean. Well, yeah, I suppose so. Alcohol's everywhere, Rex. I just have to deal with it, really. Okay. I just thought I ought to ask. And I appreciate it, really. So, shall we aim to meet up at the brewhouse? Well, isn't that where you picked the guy up? It was, yeah. Or wouldn't it be better to start there. If he'd realised he'd lost his watch once he got in your taxi. It might be, but on Mondays and Tuesdays it doesn't open till five. Ah, fine. So that's your half. Oh, thank you. And I guess I'll see you in a bit. Now, The thing about pigs, they make really fierce mothers. Like any parent, really. Nothing's more important than protecting your children. I know exactly what you mean, Neil. Sows are very protective of their young, so you got to treat them with a lot of respect. When they're in the arcs with their piglets, you just leave well alone. All right, Noted. If you go sticking your head in, you will find a 200 kilo guided missile with her mouth wide open after your daft backside. I promise you I'll keep my daft backside well away. Neil. What's up? Something wrong? Nothing to worry about. I just had a message from Nick the Nuts. Nick the Nuts? That's our name for him. One of the reps at Bossage of Eats. He's running a bit late, so can he see us at 4:30? Oh, yeah, that's fine. Joined by me. Oh, great. I'll let him know. Maybe you should sit in on the meeting, Rory. Yeah, yeah, I'd like that. If that's all right with Hannah. Yeah, why not? It's all part of the business, isn't it? Awesome. How's it going out here? Good. Yeah. Yeah, I was just going to talk about fostering on. Cool. So, how many teats does a sow have? 14. Technically, yes, but one pair isn't as good as the others. So if a sow has 14 piglets, we need to take two offer and give them to a sow with 10. I'll get Jassa or one of the other guys to show you how it's done and then you can have a go. Great. Bring it on. So? No, nothing. No one's admitting to finding a gold watch anywhere. As I hadn't heard from you either, I assume. Yeah, same. I'm sorry, Rex. Oh, nothing for you to be sorry about. I just feel bad about getting your hopes up. I feel bad about you wasting all of this time, Alice. Sure there are lots of other things you could be doing. Well, it has been an education. In what way? I visited quite a few places I'd be happy not to go back to forewarned is forearmed sort of thing. Yeah, well, I did try to rule out the roughest pubs. Oh, no, no, it was the other way around. If any Anything. Some of these places have really upped themselves, aren't they? Oh, I see what you mean like the. Oh, what's it called? The Paradise Garden Bar. Oh, yes, yes, I know it. Yeah. Pretentious March. I mean, a side street in Felpersham, not an arcade in Milan. Yeah, so that's a small consolation, anyway. Well, it's good of you to look at it like that. Oh, it looks like they're opening up. Oh, so they are. Right, then. Excuse me. So, what did you think of that? Yes, very interesting. Neil, you and Hannah drive a pretty hard bargain, don't you? Oh, you've got to. Feed is one of our biggest costs. And though Borsenshire Feeds have been supplying us, well, pretty much since we set up here, we never want them to feel that they can take us for granted. Like you said, there are plenty of other feed suppliers who'd be glad of your custom. Absolutely. Well, thanks for letting me sit in. You're welcome. While you're here, Rory. Yes? I just thought we could have a quick chat about how you're doing so far. Oh, all right. How do you feel you're doing? Well, it's early days, but I'm learning a lot and I'm enjoying it. Ah, or the cold and the mud not getting you down. Well, comes with the territory, doesn't it? Ah, true. No point complaining about. That's a good attitude. Hannah seems to think you've made a good start. Oh, great. And she doesn't impress easily, I can assure you. No, I got that impression. So if you carry on like this, we're happy to continue with your training. Excellent. Now, one of the things we need to sort out for you is the online AHDB Welfare Handling course. That's the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board. Spot on. Yeah, we need that for our Red Tractor Assurance. It takes about 90 minutes and then if you're keen on a career in pigs, you could look at the stock person training. Oh, yes. Yeah, give me a sec and I'll just show you on the computer here. Thanks, Danny. Yeah, yeah, not half as pleased as I am. All right, Bye. Bye. My boss is gonna ring the guy and say it's been found. Oh, what a relief, Rex. I think it's quite a relief for the bar manager too, having something like that in her safe. She was bit. A bit worried. I bet no one had claimed it by tomorrow. She was going to take it to the police. It's pretty unbelievable, though. How do you leave an expensive watch like that in a toilet? Must be so drunk. Anyway, Danny's going to tell him to come here and bring proof of ownership and then it'll all be over. Yes. Oh. So hopefully your license renewal should go through now without any problems. Fingers crossed. And if that man has any decency, he should be giving you a reward and an apology. Yeah, I'm not holding my breath for either of those. But, you know, if he does give me anything, I'll share it with you, of course. Oh, no, there's no need for that, Rex. No, no, no, I mean it. I really am very grateful. Well, I was pleased I could help. So we. We should celebrate, really, shouldn't we? Do you fancy a drink? A mocktail or something? Oh, actually, I need to get off, I'm afraid. Yeah, of course, that's fine. Got a table booked for the bulls Pancake day. Me and Kirsty and a few others. Oh, that's a coincidence. I'm meeting up with Chris and his parents there. And Martha, of course. Neil. Oh, hello again. Rory. Evening. Didn't realize you'd be here. Decided to make a family thing of it this year. Well, Martha did well in the pancake race, didn't she? She was so determined to keep up with Rosie, her face was a picture when she realized she'd beaten her. Yeah. Listen, while I've got you, I should have said this earlier, really, you know, when you were talking about the online training. Yeah, what about it? Well, obviously I'll do the welfare handling. That's compulsory, isn't it? Yeah, pretty much, yeah. But I'm not sure about the stock person training. Well, I'm sure you'd find it fairly straightforward. Oh. Oh, yeah, yeah, it's not that. It's just dad wants me to get a properly broad farming education, so I'm actually not sure how long I'm going to be at Barrow Farm. Oh. Oh, I see. I wouldn't want you to go to the trouble of organizing something if it didn't have a long term use. Not to mention the expense. Well, it's not hugely expensive in the great scheme of things, but if you don't think you're gonna be with us for long. Probably not. Well, that's a shame. But thanks for letting me know. Thanks for understanding. Well, I better get these drinks to the table. Sure. Oh, sorry. No worries, Rex. No worries. All right. Rory. Hi. Yeah. Do I hear you're working at Barrow Farm now? Yeah, for the time being, yes. First time with pigs? Yep. How are you finding it? Yeah, yeah, it's good. They're great animals. Very Intelligent. Yes. So I'm discovering. Oh, Jolene's free. Look, pint of lager when you're ready, please, Jolene. Can I get you one? No, thanks, but I'm getting around for the table. Okay. Enjoying it? It's bonkers, isn't it? Yeah, always is. Have you ordered any pancakes yet? No, no, I've only just got here. Well, I've heard the chicken and mushroom ones. Yummy. Oh, sounds good. Thanks, Alice. And that was a good bar, I thought, where we ended up. Oh, well, the brew house. Yeah, I suppose it was. Yeah, a lot better than some of them. True. I was wondering if maybe we could go back there sometime, make a night of it. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Oh, great. Rory? Yeah? Do you know the brew house in Felpersham? Oh, what, near the cathedral? That's the one. Would you and Paul fancy going there sometime? Yeah, yeah, why not? Oh, a Lily would probably like it as well. And Ben, if he's not on shift. Ah, awesome. Sounds like it could be a proper big night out, doesn't it, Alice? Yeah. Wonderful. I don't think you realise quite how busy. Not only am I working long hours, I'm driving long distances every day. But you don't work all the time, surely? What are you doing this Sunday, for example? And the more you drive, Stella, the more you must see the need to control speeding motorists. I thought I heard voices. Linda's trying to recruit me for the local Speedwatch team. Speed watch, is it? This is my brother Zach, and I am Linda Snell. How do you do? So you get to play with those guns, do you? We do use speed measuring equipment, yes. Saving the world from all those villains doing 35 in a 30 limit. And I was just explaining that while I know it's a good cause, I'm just not able to help directly. I am sorry, Linda. Well, as you have family visiting, I won't intrude any longer. If things were different, I. No, don't worry about it. I'll see myself out. Hey. Happy zapping. Stop it. Whoa. She's a good person. I don't doubt it. And I'm still not pleased with you. I know. Why do you think I've been keeping out of the way? Well, that's not what I want, though, Zach. It certainly wasn't the idea of you visiting. Well, I didn't mean to upset you the other day. I know. I just want to look out for my sister. You can understand that, surely. Thank you. But I can look out for myself. I know. I'm sorry if I overdid it. How about a cup of tea? Can't, I'm afraid. I've got a hairdresser's appointment. Oh. Judging yourself up for the party? You can come with me if you like. Nah, you're all right. Actually, I've been thinking I should have a bit of a walk around. Okay. Take a closer look at things here. Well, it's a nice afternoon. Work out what the big appeal of the place Is. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Don't go that way. What? It's all right, or you'll have to disinfect your trainers. I can see the signs. I'm Stella's brother, Zach. Oh, hi. Are you Josh? That's me. So, avian flu? Yep. It's a nightmare for poultry keepers like me. I bet. My birds are usually free range, but they've been locked up for weeks now. Well, it sounds tough, Josh. It is. You want a hand with that? Yeah, go on, then. Farming's a bit of a mystery to me. Thought I'd take a look around and see why you guys like it so much. Or not. There's just such a lot of uncertainty. Too much of it's out of your control. Go on. My mum and dad have tried to reduce their input costs as much as possible. Yeah? How do they do that? Mainly by relying heavily on our own grand Grass to feed the cattle. Okay. But the climate's getting madder and madder. Right now we're trying to eke out the silage until the grass starts growing again, but we've had to buy in feed at stupid prices. Huh. Everyone's hoping for a decent spring and summer, but if it doesn't happen, next winter is going to be really sketchy. Yeah, like you say, that's out of your control. Then you've got governments coming and going, new schemes stopping and starting. I like these inheritance tax changes. Oh, don't get me started on that. But has it forced farmers into certain actions? Definitely. Can you smell that? What? Well, me. Well, that's pigs for you, Rory. I'm going to have to keep on top of that for the sake of my social life. Good scrub. Damocarbolic. That's what you need. Paul and I might be hitting Felphisham soon. Oh, yes, with Alice and Rex. Rex Fanbrother and a few others. I don't want everyone edging away from me holding their nose. Anyway, before you go. Can it wait, dad? I'm knackered. It won't take long. I really need to have a shower. Rory, why are you turning down training opportunities? Sorry? Stock person training. Has Neil been talking to you? I've been talking to Neil. Naturally, I'm taking an interest in how you're getting on and he seemed pretty pleased with you. Generally. That's good. But apparently he'd recommended a course and you turned your nose up at it. No, I didn't. Did Neil say that? He said you didn't want to do it. I did the welfare handling module, which was mandatory. As I understand it. But as I explained to him, I'll be moving on from Bero pretty soon. I didn't want to waste his time if I'm not going to be working with pigs long term. What gives you the impression you'll be moving on soon? Well, arable's quiet at this time of year. Adam can easily run things by himself. Yes, but isn't the idea. And I've decided that at the moment, Barrow Farm is the best place for you. And it'll be the best place until I decide otherwise. Okay, Sorry. All right. I do get it, dad. Get what? This is about what happened on New Year's Eve for what you did on New Year's Eve. Yes, to Neil's grandson. In fact, I really am very aware of that every time I see him. And honestly, I do feel so guilty about it. So, yeah, I get it. And I'll take my punishment for as long as it's needed. No, that's not it at all. I'm not punishing you. No, certainly not. I'm doing what I should have done a long time ago. Taking you in hand and giving you a purpose. Oh. If you want to run Home Farm, eventually you're going to need more than a bunch of fancy ideas. You've got to be grounded in reality. I see. And there are few things more real than pig muck. Hello. Oh, good Lord. Is that Linda Snell? You'd better get it, Rory. I can't, can I? Not smelling like this. Yeah. I'm the only boy. Three sisters plus me. Right. So I've always been the odd one out. Me too. I mean, I've got a brother, but. But, yeah, after our dad died, it was like the pressure was on me to step up, that I had to make my own way. What do you do, Zach? Financial advisor. Wealth management. Sounds more lucrative than farming. Yeah, I do all right. It's not about the numbers, it's security. Having money gives you options, you know what I mean? I do. And this is your business, right? Yeah. Completely separate from Brookfield. So you've had to fall forge your own path, too? It hasn't always been with eggs, though. No, I started off quite young, buying and selling farm machinery. How young? 19 specs. Well, maybe it was a bit too young. Nah, I mean, it didn't end very well. Well, you say you learned, though, innit? Well, I definitely learned a lot. It develops you as a person, too. You should be proud, taking chances despite not having everything handed to you on a play. I'm glad. So someone Sees it like that. Although, yeah, you were saying about inheritance tax, am I right? That when your sister gets the farm, she'll be on the hook for the tax bill? Could have been a lot worse with Stella, too. Assuming they're married by then. Not sure, probably. Which sounds like some sort of prenuptial agreement. Would be a good idea to protect Pip as much as Stella you'd know more about than me. I've no idea if it's even been considered. Hasn't the family discussed it? If they have, it hasn't been with me. But that's just par for the course. And as I understand it, you're basically retired from farming now. Well, that's something of an oversimplification. So, could I put you down for a refresher session? Nothing too demanding. We'd go over the basics. How to operate the speed gun, how we record the offenders and so on. I'm sorry, Linda, but at 82 years old, I'm far too ancient to be standing by a cold roadside. Oh, nonsense. Robert's almost exactly the same age as you, and I myself am not that much younger. Still. Well, Speed Watch isn't just for the benefit of the community. It's a very sociable activity, Brian. Well, forgive me if I find that hard to believe. Giving lectures to boy racers doesn't exactly sound like positive social interaction. Oh, no, no. I met with the other volunteers. We work in pairs, you see, and there's always plenty to chat about. We even get together for occasional coffee mornings. Coffee mornings? Oh, yes, and very convivial affairs they are, I can assure you. It's vital to keep active in retirement, you know. Is this about Speed Watch? It is indeed. Linda's right, dad. Everyone knows how important it is to maintain social contact as you get older. It too. Rory, loneliness is as bad as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. I'm far from lonely, thank you. I already have plenty of activities, so I'm sorry, but I won't be adding Speed Watch to them. You're welcome to sign up if you want to. I already have. Really? The other day. Oh, yes, and he took very little persuading, I can tell you. Well, good for you. But I won't be following your example. Oh, shame. Linda did tell you about the coffee mornings, didn't she? Yes, and I'm afraid even that tempting prospect wasn't enough to persuade me. There you go, Linda. You'll just have to be happy with one from two. Oh, dear. I suppose you're right. I won't trouble you any longer. I'LL see you out. No need. I know the way. Farewell. Boo. Goodbye. See you. Well, thanks for nothing. You're welcome. I'm amazed you volunteered, though. Surely you've got better things to do. Ah, well, signing up is one thing. Actually being available for any of the sessions is another. You cunning devil. Yeah, if you'd been a bit smarter, you could have saved yourself a 15 minute lecture there. Well played, sir. And I have actually volunteered for something that you will approve of. What's that then? After my shower, I rang Neil and told him I'd like to do the stock person training after all. And what did he say? He was really pleased. Well, so am I. You're right, Dad. I do need purpose in my life. And if right now that's pig farming, then I want to be the best pig farmer I can be. Whoa. Let me give you a hand with that. Oh, hello. Good timing. Where's it going? Down the back. Oh, you farmers. You don't have to do everything by yourself, you know. Yeah, I just thought it would look better over here. Is this for the dj? Thanks. Welcome. Hi. Let's take a look. Oh, yes. Oh, nice hair, by the way. Thank you. You have booked a dj? Of course. He's Pip's cousin. Freddie. Pip's cousin? No. Yeah, he. He does know what he's doing. We've asked him to go for a sort of barn dance feel. What? All that spin your partner do? Si. Do stuff. Which is actually great fun, Zach. I'll take your word for it. But no, no, nothing organized, no cooler. Just a bit of old folky country feel style music as befits a farming couple. Speaking of which. Yes? I've actually had a better look round now I'm starting to understand Stella. Are you? Ambridge is a lovely part of the world. Not my sort of place. Well, no, you know me get twitchy if I'm more than 10 minutes from an all night convenience store. But I can see why you like it so much. I'm glad to hear it. And as far as the marriage is concerned, no pressure, but maybe you should have a think about putting some paperwork in place ahead of time. That would protect everyone involved. Yeah, maybe, but there's plenty of time for that. Oh, totally. Well, you've got a party to organise first. Yes, we have. Have you got any sort of dress code? There's no theme, is there? No, no, just party clothes. Oh, that's good. People can get so hung up about that sort of thing. And what, the booze arrangements? Well, that's all courtesy Of David and Ruth there in engagement present to us. Oh, wicked. And they're gonna run the bar all night as well. Hey, I can help out with that. No, it's no need. No, I'd like to. We want everyone to have fun, don't we? That's the idea. Although I'm not sure if Josh will be in much of a party mood. Why? Oh, nothing. Has he said something? No. Ignore me. Where do you think the speakers will go? So Will's on veg boxes? Yes, I'm feeding and bedding the Anguses. Then afternoon milking. How about you, Tom? I'm at Sawyer's with Morris most of the morning. Morris? He's your butcher? Yes, he is. Oh, have you met him, Akram? I have not, Mr. Cheerful never been known to crack a smile. But what he doesn't know about sausage making isn't worth knowing. True then. I'm meeting potential new customer. Oh, who? Beckwell Garden Centre. Interested in having our bangers for their cafe. Oh, good stuff. And I'll drop the photo board over to Brookfield on the way. For the party, you mean? If you could give me a hand getting into the van, dad. Perhaps I could help with that as Toddy seems busy. Actually, you need to crack on in the big polytunnel at cram. Oh, all right. It's time to clear the winter salad Brassicas. It's all either bolted or we've cut it right back and used it in the veg box. Winter salad brush. You know, pak choi, rocket mizuna. Okay, they're all on the left hand front side right. Left hand side right. Can we get this board loaded right away, dad? Yeah, sure. I need to get to the radio before Morris or we'll have his awful easy listening music all morning. I hope David and Ruth don't mind. No, I think it's better there, Stella. They only usually put the DJ at the end because if it's a sit down do, the place is full of chairs and tables. Yeah. Oh, and Zach said we should make sure there's a microphone as well in case we want to say anything. You're not planning on making a speech, are you? I am not, Pip. Are you? Oh, perish the thought. But you know, we might want to say thank you for coming or last orders at the bar. Or will the owner of the blue Fiat please move it as it's blocking the exit? Exactly. Yeah, fair enough. I'm pretty sure Freddie brings a mic with his DJ gear. I'll message him. Thanks, love. Righty. So what Sort of decorations you can doing in here? Oh, the usual bunting. Oh, that's really classy. Yeah, some of Grand's WI chums ran it up out of fabric off cuts. How very green on them. There's lots of balloons in there and a helium cylinder out the back. But I thought we'd leave those until tomorrow, make sure they're nice and fresh. Oh, yeah, there's nothing sadder than a deflated. Yeah, exactly. Oh. Didn't realize you were in here. You sorting out the decorations? Well, don't mind me. I'm gonna stop the bar. Well, that's nice of you. Wasn't my idea. Oh. Mum asked. I'm doing it for her. Yeah, I think that might be Tom with the photoboard. I just. Just go and check. Okay. There's the board was Henry's idea. You know, it's the sort of thing you get the seaside where you stick your head through the hole. But this one shows you milking a cow. Yeah, whatever. Yeah, it's very popular at their open. Can I ask you something? Yeah, of course. You and Stella, this marriage. What about it? What's happening about a prenup? A prenup? Prenuptial agreement. I know what it's short for, but why are you asking? I'm asking because to me it looks like you're playing Russian roulette with Brookfield's future. What? You do know if you get divorced, it could rip the farm apart, right? Josh Brookfield should be something to pass on to future generations. If you're not careful, it'll end up as a hobby farm. Oh, it's really good of you to bring this over, Tom. Consider it our engagement privilege present to you and Pip. A second gift from your family this week. Sorry? We got all the packets of seeds from your dad. Oh, yeah. Are you okay solo, Rex? Yep, yep, fine. Got it. Such an unusual idea, isn't it? That's my dad. He's an unusual fella. Do you know where you'll plant the seeds? Well, not yet. Been a bit of a busy week with party preparations. Ah, of course. And my brother's been here this week, so. Oh, yeah? That's nice. Yeah, mainly. Well, there's plenty of time anyway. Absolutely. And the bungalow has a decent sized garden. Oh, I remember. Bert Fries. Pride and Joy. After Frida, of course. Yeah, well, I'm afraid I haven't been able to keep it the way he did. Hard act to follow. Is Bert in the garden department anyway? Yeah. Poetry, not so much. There are plenty of corners that would Benefit from a bit of planting, actually. Yeah, sure. Right, into the barn then. No, no, no. Just. Just leave it with me. We'll take it from here. I'm sure you've got lots to be getting on with. Well, that is true. Got a sales visit to make. Although first I need to check on things back at the farm. Great. I'll see how Pitt's doing in there. Thanks again. All right. See ya. Oh, hello, Tom. Hi. I'm not interrupting your lunch, am I? No, I'm working through. Oh, right. I will be for several weeks. In fact. Ramadan started on Tuesday. Ah, I see. Oh, good. Well, I just wanted to see how you're getting on with taking the old veg to the compost area. Yes, making good progress. I'm in the polytunnel now. Okay. Although I must say, the stuff I'm disposing of looks pretty green. It seems a shame to dig up greenery. But if that's what you want. Greenery? Well, yes. Akram, can you describe exactly what it is you're digging up? Well, sort of pointed green, leaves a bit curled. Oh, no, a bulb on the end. Akram, just stop, okay? Stop. Don't do anything. Just take a break, all right? I'm coming straight back. You're talking like I don't care about Brookfield. Stella and I haven't discussed a prenup. I knew it up to now, but that doesn't mean it isn't gonna happen. We haven't even fixed a wedding date yet. Anyway, I'm pretty certain Mum and Dad never had a prenup. That's different, Pip. Mmm. How is it different? Because Mum and Dad aren't you. It's like they've forgotten your history. What on earth do you mean by that? Well, let's take a look, shall we? Remember when you were gonna work in Brazil and got as far as high wicked? Yeah, the job wasn't right for me then. How you wanted to rewild half of Ambridge until you didn't. Well, it wasn't as simple as that. And as for your love life. Gosh. Remember Jude, who you were gonna chuck college for to go travelling with? That's ancient history. Well, what about more recently then? Having a baby with Toby when you weren't even going out. Why are you being so horrible? Then about five minutes ago you suddenly decided you were gay and now you're getting married. Oh. Oh, no, I see. No, I get it. I get it because this is my first same sex relationship. You don't think it. It's real. And the marriage doesn't count. That's not it at all. You surprised me, Josh. I never had you down as a hobophobe. I'm not. It's nothing to do with that. It's everything to do with you being a complete flake. What? And as for mum and dad supposedly making their announcement to all of us at the same time, I don't buy that for a second. What are you on about? Don't tell me you hadn't been discussing things behind closed doors. It's a classic stitch up. You knew they had a deadline because of the inheritance tax and you couldn't get in quick enough. That is not true. How come you just announced you're getting married at the same time? What they decided was as much a surprise to me as it was to anyone. Liar. It's true, Josh. Why are you being so vile? Hey, hey. You will never believe what he's been saying about me. And I should have said it a long time ago. Look, look, whatever your disagreement, getting nasty isn't gonna help. You need to know what you're hooking yourself up to Stella. How dare you? I think you should leave worry. I'm going. You can stock your own bar. I feel so embarrassed. How could I not recognize Dulex? Oh, Akram. It was probably just because you weren't expecting it. Well, yes. I had no idea you grew flowers here, Tony. I just assumed they were one of your exotic ventures. But to be fair, they are a fairly new line. We sell them in the shop in the spring. I planted tulips of my own a few months ago. It's not to worry. You only dug up half a row. Lucky you rang when you did, Tom. Yeah, and Lucky the cafe manager was happy to delay our meeting. I am so sorry. Never mind. Let's just replant them and hope for the best. I was so happy working, I just got carried away with the fall. Well, that's good that you were happy. I mean, I thought you wanted the whole of this site taken out. Perhaps we could have been clearer. No, I did say the left hand front side of the polytello. Maybe, but as it's the first time Akram's done the job anyway. Never mind. Worse things happen at sea. I'll replant them right away. Actually, I've finished with the Anguses, so I'm happy to do. What about the afternoon milking? It'll be done well before then. If you're sure, Donny. Because there's something that needs doing. That Akram's better qualified for than any of us. What's that? The outdoor tap by the workshop started to drip. Could you take a look at it? Of course. Have you got your tools? In the van. Don't you worry. I'll soon get that sorted for you. Thanks. Well, that was a narrow escape. The tulips sold really well last year. Mum would have been furious if they'd all been chucked away. Good save, son. Thanks. But I do wonder, have we made a mistake by employing Akram? What? No, definitely not. With this and the reorganizing the packing sheds. Well, Tom, I think you need to accept at least some responsibility for the mix up. Me? Yeah. You were in quite a rush this morning. I had a lot to do. I know, but it might have been an idea to bring Akram here and show him the actual job rather than issue a quick, garbled instruction. I really don't think it was garbled. No. All right, maybe that was unfair, but it was very quick. So let's just learn from this. Everyone has to find their feet. But I think Akrams are really real asset to the farm. Weren't you saying so just the other day? I guess. And okay, he might mess up occasionally and have mad ideas, but so do we all. You know how hard it is to find good workers. And now we've got him, I want to keep hold of him. Fair enough. So if he's happiest with the outdoor work, then let's keep from finding him jobs like that. Oh, come on, Pip. It's all right. I knew he wasn't very happy, but I had no idea he felt like that. I know. How much did you hear? Well, I got how it ended, but not where it started. He asked if we were doing anything about a prenup agreement. Yeah, I don't know where he got the idea from, but, like, he just assumed that we weren't gonna have one. I think I know who might have put that in his head. Who? Zach hinted at something along those lines yesterday. Zach? Why was he stirring it with Josh? I do love my brother, but he doesn't know how to cause trouble. Look, I mean, I suppose it is something we should talk about, but not like this. Not because of a huge row. No, it's not ideal. I know. And you must realize, Stella, that no part of me thinks we're gonna get divorced. Me neither. A prenup isn't something I'd want for myself. I know that. And if we were to set one up, it would just be to reassure the Family. I understand. And if you didn't want to, then we wouldn't have one at all. No, no, look, look, it's a perfectly good idea. If Josh hadn't jumped the gun, I'd probably have suggested it myself. Really? Yes. I'm not marrying you to get half of Brookfield. Oh, you're so lovely. So are you. What are we gonna do about Josh? Look, I really don't know, but right now we need to get Tom's head through the whole thing. Inside the hilarious Milking the Cow photo board? Yes. What a way to be going into a party. It can't be helped. There's clearly stuff we'll all have to work through. Yeah, but for everyone's sake, we need to put it to one side until afterwards. Easier said than done. Well, we must, Pip. Tomorrow is for celebrating. As you can see, you're one of the first. At my sister's request. What can I get you, Zach? Oh, I'll have a beer, please. Lager. Okay. Good of you and David to run the bar tonight. It seemed the least we could do. I was saying to Stella, I'm happy to stand in for a bit, give you a break. Are you sure? Yeah, totally. Ruth, I've done bar work in the past and there's no till to get your head around, is there? Well, we might take you up on that later. Thanks. No worries. Do you want a glass with it? No. As it comes. Cheers. Cheers. Well, this place scrubs up well, doesn't it? I wasn't really sure when Stella said the party was going to be in a barn. Ah, this isn't just any barn. Evening. Hi, Alice. Have you two met? No, I don't think so. Zach. I'm Stella's brother. Alice. Friend or family? Oh, family. There'll be lots of us here tonight. Yeah, that doesn't support Surprise me. What can I get you, Alice? Oh, there's Stella. Would you excuse me? Oh, of course. She wants a word before it all kicks off, so can you do a lime and soda? Absolutely. Thanks for getting here early, Josh. That's all right. I just wanted us to have a quick get together because Zach has something to say to you. Don't you, Zach? Yeah, I have. You alright, Josh? Oh, yeah. Dak. Yeah. I just wanted to say sorry for winding you up the other day. I can have a big mouth sometimes. More than sometimes. I didn't realise how strong everyone's feelings were. Should have kept my nose out. Honestly, Josh, Pip and I want Brookfield to remain in one piece as much as you Do Totally, mate. You can trust them to do the best for everyone. I understand. And yeah, I know I went over the top yesterday with Pip. I don't want to cause any trouble between you and your sister. No, no, it's okay. Don't worry about it. Great. So, all sorted then? I suppose so. Hey, what are you drinking, buddy? No, it's all right. I'm not staying. What? I hope the party goes well. No, Josh, you mustn't go. Look, I. I know you and Pip said some things yesterday, but really should be even more upset if you weren't here tonight. I'm so pleased for you. Oh, thanks, Rex. And I know Toby is too, though I'm sure he's told you that himself. He has. Several times. Yeah. He was sad not to be able to come tonight. You know how much he loves a party. Oh, yes, but people have busy lives. Whatever date you set, not everyone will be able to make it. I'm glad you did. Well, there was always a better chance of that happening. Toby has a much livelier social life than me. And more girlfriends. Well, who knows? Maybe you'll meet someone tonight. Actually, Pip, there is someone here who I like. And I think she might like me. Well, then. But I also think I might have got the wrong end of the stick over something. Okay, but if I do something about it and I had it right all along, then that's just going to be so embarrassing for the both of us. I just go for it if I were you. Really? Yeah, if I need to settle things one way or the other. You never know unless you try. Oh, you're right. I know you are. Just need to man up about it. I just wanted to say congratulations. Thanks, Josh. A good party, isn't it? It is. But I might not stay for much longer once the dancing gets going, you know, though, Right? Not in much of a dancing mood. Oh, there's Ben. Kirsty was saying he'd like to take a look at the beavers. I'll just. Sure. No problems. Hey, Ben, do you want to sort a time out to come over to Rewilding? So I see Carol Trorren's here. Is she in the corner with Gran and Rosie? Oh, yeah. She doesn't get out much nowadays. No, I guess not. I mean, she must be about the same age as Gran. So nice of her to make the effort. Yeah, I expect they'll be going soon. Grand and Leonard are going to put Rosie to bed. Right. So you know Carol has the tenancy for Glebe Cottage. I'm not sure I dare venture inside. She's pretty weird, isn't she? Look, Pip, yesterday I said some things I probably shouldn't have. Well, likewise. I was taking a lot of stuff out on you that was really more about me, where I am at the moment. Well, I'm sorry for some of the things I said, too. Oh, you might as well know. I've decided I'm gonna hire a manager for the egg business and then I'm gonna look for work on a farm overseas. Really? Where? Don't know. Could be anywhere. Do Mum and Dad know? Not yet. They'll be devastated. I don't want to spoil the party for them. But you don't mind telling me. I didn't mean to. It just came out. Yeah. They'll think that they've driven you away. I can't help that. Because of the succession plan? Well, that is part of the reason. But it's also something Uncle Brian said put it in my mind. Well, what sort of work are you gonna do? Don't know yet. But with any luck, I'll at least get some cash together. Maybe even find the idea that'll make my fortune. When are you gonna tell them? Tomorrow, probably. They might not take it as hard as you think. They've done something similar, haven't they? Have they? Dad worked on a farm in Holland when he was young. Oh, I see what you mean. And Mum spent that time in New Zealand. Yeah, they both got a lot out of it. Do you think they might understand then? Hopefully. But if they don't. Well, look, I can't help that. It's my life, my decision. Sure. And what have I got to lose? Especially now I know I won't have much of a stake in Brookfield. Hello, Speed watch lady. Oh, good evening. We met the other day. I'm Zach, Stella's brother. Yes, I remember. Not wearing your high vis vest, then? No. Have you got your speed gun with you? We better watch out when the fast music comes on. Mr. Zack, please. Zack. You clearly think that caring about speeding motorists is a subject for hilarity. No, I didn't say. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. You made your attitude very clear when we first met. But I can assure you that they can make people's lives unmissable. It's just a bit of banter. You'll excuse me if I feel defeated. Excessive speed is a factor in over half of all fatal collisions. This isn't really party talk, is it? Well, you brought it up, not me. And I do think that making it a subject of mockery is, if you'll forgive me, me. Not a very grown up thing to do. No, Fair enough. I beg your pardon? I apologise, Linda. I'm an idiot. Well, I wouldn't say that necessarily. How can I make it up to you? Get you a drink? Could I have your attention, please, ladies and gentlemen? Thank you. So, David had wanted to make a speech, but as tonight is all about the women, I overruled him. When Stella first came to Ambridge, she and I hit it off very quickly. She was obviously very good at her job, but she was also a really nice person. Straightforward, loyal, funny. The sort of woman you could tell would make someone a lovely wife one day. But little did I realize that the person she would make a lovely wife to would be our Pip. But I'm glad to say that while their relationship has grown closer, my friendship with Stella has grown stronger. So when they told us they were planning to get married, you can imagine how happy I was. Both of us. David and me. So we're really looking forward to welcoming Stella into the family. And if she's a farmer, we'll always have something to talk about. I know they're going to have a wonderful future together. So could you please join me in a toast to the happy couple, Pip and Stella. Pip and Stella. You're not dancing. I'm just having a rest. Come on, come and dance. Fine. Zach. Oh, am I in the dog house with you too? You're not in the dog house. Oh, what's happening here? You causing trouble again? I knew it. What? Seriously, Stella. I mean, haven't I eaten enough humble pie for one evening? What was Pip's brother and what's her name? Speed Watch Woman. Linda. Can't remember. Just forget about it now and have some fun. No, because. Do you mind if I tell Zach about. As long as he doesn't tell mom and dad. What? What's the big secret? Josh is leaving. He's going to look for work abroad. Oh, well. Well, that's not a bad thing, is it? Well, you know, it sounds to me like he's running away. Partly because you can't resist stirring things. Oh, come on, there's a lot more going on than that. Well, whatever the reason, I'm worried about him leaving before we've made up. Made up? Yeah, come to terms about the inheritance. But you won't be losing contact with him. It's not like Victorian times when you get a letter from the colonies once a year. It is very easy to keep in touch now. And Josh is young, if he feels he needs some space. Then this could be really good for him. I hope so. I know I wasn't sure when I arrived, but you too. You seem really happy and settled. Here we are. Which is great, but it doesn't mean it's right for Josh. Not right now. So this could actually work out well for everyone. My brother, the spin doctor. Come on. This is your party. Enough to talk. It's time to dance. Good party, isn't it? Oh, sorry, Rex. What did you say? Good party. Oh, yeah, Yeah, I. First time I've had a chance to talk to you, Alice. Oh, I've been here all evening. Yeah. So would you like to dance? Okay. Yeah, I guess so. Freddie's doing a good job. What? The music. Not Freddy's usual style? Oh, yeah. No, I guess not. He's doing well with it. Yeah. And the. The decorations are really nice. Oh, yeah, they're very nice. Yeah. Oh. Oh. Oh. May I have the pleasure of this dance? Thank you. I'd be much obliged. Oh, it's been a funny party, hasn't it? Good, though, Pip? Oh, yeah. People having a great time. Yeah. Except Josh. Well, yeah, but what can you do? I know he's my little brother, Stella, but he's an adult. Precisely. So I'm not gonna let him spoil things. Good. Well, you know what we need to do next, don't you? What? Set a date for the wedding. Yes. Yes, we should. I love you. I love you. Oh. Oh, that's so sweet. It is, isn't it? I love a happy ending. Alice. Yeah? I may have got this very wrong, but the other night when you were talking about going back to the brew house. Yes? Did you really mean just the two of us? Actually, I did, Rex. Like a date? Maybe. Okay. And would you say still be interested in that? Well, going to the brew house with you. Yeah. Were you sure you wouldn't prefer to have a gang along? Oh, God. So sorry. Safety in numbers. Oh, I just misunderstood. Yes, I'd love to. You would? Totally. It's what I was angling for in the first. Sa. Hello, I'm Alan Davis, and on BBC Radio 4, we're off into alternate realities mapped out by science. This is life without, where I pull one thread from the magnificent fabric of life and watch what unravels. Scientists around the world would be crying themselves to sleep. A bunch of mammals would be worrying about where their favorite snack was, and we bring it down to earth. David Beckham. I can imagine him putting that on the socials. My bees of my girls have all disappeared. Sometimes we patch it up and crack on. We will survive. We will survive. Humans are ingenious. That is our hallmark. Property we should prize above everything else. But sometimes it's bigger than us. Join me to find out just how far the unraveling can go. Subscribe to Life without on BBC Sounds.
