Welcome to the Slam and Jam here on the Athletic NBA Daily. On today's show, we've got Law Murray on to discuss first time All Stars. We do it every year and we're doing it this year with LA Murray. It should be very fun. And then we're going to close with some trivia. Trivia that Alex said to me earlier. I've got some really good trivia and he said it in a menacing way so I'm terrified.
Alex
No, no, I, I think it's fun trivia. I think you guys are gonna really enjoy it.
Andrew
Okay, that, that feels, that feels, that still feels menacing with us. Law Murray of the Athletic. You know him from player tiers, you know him from power rankings and you also know him for covering a team that is endlessly interesting in all the bad ways. The LA Clippers Law what's up?
Law Murray
I'm really happy to see you guys and really happy to not talk about the LA Clippers.
Andrew
Yeah, yeah. This is not a Clipper centered podcast. We're talking about guys that we think could be first time All Stars. Alex, will you help walk us through this exercise?
Alex
Yes, we, we're going to do a draft. But before we get to the draft, I do want to give some preamble because it might, it might influence who you pick. So we've done. This is the Fifth year we've done this. And originally when I did it, I went back 25 years so to 1997. So now I have 29 years worth of data on average every season. There are 6.1 firsttime All Stars every season, which always surprises me that the number is that high and yet it keeps happening. Even last year we had six first time all stars happened again. Now I broken them down by years of like years of service in the NBA. Just to give you an idea of like who you might be wanting to pick because when it comes to rookies, extremely rare. The last rookie who did it of course was, speaking of the Clippers, Blake Griffin. Blake Griffin, he was 21. He was technically in his second season because he had missed his first season due to injury. Before that you got to go back to 22 year old Yao Ming. Before that you have to go back to 24 year old David Robinson. It's very rare. It can happen, but it's rare. Second year guys, that happens a little bit more frequently, we get like 0.7 per year, but it's been happening more frequently recently. Wemby being being an example. Third year players, we get about one per year. Fourth year players, it's about 1.2 per year. The majority of first time All Stars tend to be guys who are off their rookie scale deals. I would consider them vets. So these are guys who are in their fifth year or later. They make up 3.1 of the first time All Stars every season. And there's always names that surprises. Last year we did this draft, there were four of us and we each picked three players. So 12 guys and still none of us picked Jalen Duran. And none of us picked Norm Powell. And Norm Powell falls into that vet bucket. And there were four vets last year, six in total. One other thing I wanted to bring up that could influence you is the difference between the conferences. So law, I went back through your tiers. Now your first five guys, I mean Giannis and Ant are in there are both in a tier. But if we say Ant is number five, those first five guys all from the West. However, if you look at the top 20, so this goes all the way through Tier 2B. Only eight of those guys are currently in the Western Conference. Twelve are in the Eastern Conference. Two West All Stars from last season, LeBron and maybe Kawhi move to the East. Plus we're getting a full season of Jason Tatum and a full season of Tyrese Halbert. Two guys who I would think would be traditionally an all star. Lock if healthy. So just something to think about. I would say based on that there's. There's a lot more room in the west to. To. To make some moves. If I look at like locked in guys in the West, I really only see like Curry, Jokic, sga, Wemby, Anthony and Luca. Now there's. There's some guys who like, I mean, I don't know, would you consider kd. But a lot of the other guys, you know, Denny, Devin, Booker, Jamal Murray, Chet Shen, Goon, Fox Market, Garland, like these are all guys who.
Andrew
JDub.
Alex
JDub, in any given year could make it, but I wouldn't consider them locks to make it. Okay, so. So we're all in agreement with that. Okay. So last year Andrew went three for three, Law. Okay. He predicted all three of his picks. Correct. Okay. So that's what we're aiming to do here today. We're trying to beat Andrew.
Law Murray
Okay.
Andrew
Which means I will get zero correct today. I think I just, you know, it's just a year at a time here.
Alex
It was, it was a great year for you. You picked, you had Jalen Johnson, Shett and Denny.
Andrew
Yep.
Alex
As your last pick. So congrats to you. I did get one with Jamal Murray, but our other picks did not come through. So we're going to go four rounds this year, which might seem like a lot, but again, there's three of us. That's 12 guys. And like I said last year, we missed completely on two of them.
Andrew
Yeah, 12. 12 picks last year. And we, we did talk too much about Hanson Young last year too. Just so everybody knows. Okay.
Alex
And we'll be talking about them a lot this year too. Now Law, you are a guest. So in the interest of you trying to beat Andrew's record, which you could do, you could go four for four. Would you like to pick your draft slot? Would you like to pick first, second or third in this draft?
Law Murray
You know, I don't. I. I got a few guys that I like and I'm going to go with an even number here, so I'll go two. But before I do, you mentioned David Robinson. Would you. Did you mean Tim Duncan there? Because Timmy was an All Star his rookie year. I was thinking I did. Which. Which year was that? Was that the lockout year? But not that would have been 1998. We had an All Star game. Timmy was in it.
Alex
Yes, thank you for the correction. He was probably older too, though. He was probably. What is.
Law Murray
He absolutely was. Tim Duncan was the first pick of the 97 draft. That dude could have been the top five pick either of his previous three years at Wake Forest. And it was a heck of a draft to be the number one pick in 97.
Alex
To your point and to my point. Andrew, where would you like to pick? Would you like to the number one overall pick or would you like to go a three? You could get two picks in a row.
Andrew
Yeah, I'll take number one.
Alex
Okay. I really wanted number one. It's not a big deal. It's not a big deal.
Andrew
Don't ask next time, Al. Just take it.
Alex
Well, last year I, I got number one, so I, I felt like it was only fair to give you the option.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
Okay, Andrew, so you're going to start us off. First of all, do you feel like there's a clear. Maybe there's not a WIMBY level prospect, but is there like a Cooper Flag level prospect for you?
Andrew
Yeah. Okay. Yeah. Cooper Flag is my selection. Oh really? Yeah, yeah, there's definitely a Cooper Flag level prospect here. Coop was unbelievable the second half of the year. I mean he had a 50 point game. I feel like if he had his second half of the season in the first half he would have clearly been the youngest All Star ever. I think he would have been younger than Kobe, um, who was the youngest all Star ever. So like to, to me like this one is a slam dunk. Especially when you think about like wings in the Western Conference, like forwards in the Western Conference. I think like to me he's like one of the best ones already. And the fact like I hopefully Kyrie Irving's back that I think part of what held him back at the to start the season is that he was playing a lot of the off as the offensive initiator like the primary one. And I think not having him be that will be very helpful to him. And so Cooper Flag I think is like a shoe in for an all Star. He's also like a very fun player, somebody that you want to get into the All Star game in general. So to me, yeah, I will take Cooper Flag.
Alex
It's a good pick. I will say when I was looking at the second year players because I felt like, well, I'm going to choose, I'm going to pick at least one. Yeah, I do feel like Cooper has the clearest pathway to the all Star for sure. Because you have the questions with Harper about like is he going to start or not? We'll eventually talk about that, I'm assuming. And then with Khan, you know, the adjustment post Lamelo coup, he's going to get to play with Kyrie, which is a huge boost. And I think that that team compared to those other two teams has the best chance to significantly improve upon last year's record. So I'm not saying they're going to be like amazing or anything, but it's going to be hard for Charlotte to be significantly better than last year. It's going to be hard for the spurs to be significantly better. So I think it's a good pick.
Andrew
Yeah. And Kyrie has played with a forward that is very much like Cooper flag before and has been extremely helpful to set forward.
Alex
Law, you were up pick number two.
Law Murray
Yeah, I love the Cooper Flag pick. And I will say like if that three ball gets better because I mean he wasn't just a bad three point shooter. He was, he was an, he was an awful three point shooter last year. But adjustment to the pro game and as young as he is, if that thing is consistent in any way and he will certainly get more catch and shoot opportunities, you would hope. Jury is really out on Dallas's offense and how they'll play, but um, I think that's going to be really exciting to see. Um, another guy with a questionable jump shot who plays in Texas that I think could have a real case as a first time all star in 2027 is Stefan Castle of the San Antonio Spurs. We got to see Steph Castle play for a team, a very good team last year, obviously a Western Conference champion. And I was in LA when the spurs visited right before the All Star game. I think it was a week of the All Star game actually. And Mitch Johnson, who doesn't have the public Persona as someone who's going to, you know, bang the table for guys or anything like that. Well, he, he looked around the room after his pre game media availability and he was like, we only have one All Star so that must mean Wemby's an MVP candidate. Or it means that de' Aaron Fox or Stefan Castle should be in this All Star game because at the time Fox was not a selection. Yet about 48 hours later Fox got in there. But I think that if you look at who could be the second Spurs All Star, maybe it's Fox or maybe it could be Stefan Castle who still I feel like has another level to grow. He will be in his third NBA season. We know that that dude can get two feet in the paint very easily. We know that he is bolstering a reputation as a two way player as far as not just his defensive aptitude, but who he guards as well. Like He's a tough dude, incredibly athletic, huge for his size, and now is coming off of real playoff experience. Like they went to the finals. Those are all the ingredients to having a guy. And obviously he was the rookie of the year of his class. Right. So we already know that he's on a trajectory that suggests that he should be a star and we could, we could see a push. And if he plays the way that we think he will, I think he's going to be a real candidate for that spot.
Alex
Wow. Andrew, were you surprised by Steph Castle at number two?
Andrew
I had Steph Castle at three on my list.
Alex
Wow. Okay.
Andrew
So not super surprised.
Alex
Okay. Well, you both have left me the top player on my board.
Andrew
Wow.
Alex
Which I. Thank you. And it is a vet because as I mentioned, vets are the most likely candidates for a first time all star. Is of course, Austin Reeves.
Andrew
Dang it. That's my number two guy.
Alex
In 23 games before his injury, Reeves was averaging 27, 5 and 6, getting to the line almost nine times per game. In 16 games without LeBron last year, he put up 28, 5 and 8 and got to the line almost 10 times a game. And did you, Were you aware that the Lakers lost their third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh leading score from last season? They had one and two, but they lost three through seven. Now they did add like Quentin Grimes. Okay, he's going to score a little bit. Colin Sexton will probably score a little. But I think a ton is going to be on Austin Reeves shoulders. And I'm, I buy into the idea that regardless of how you feel about the Lakers long term outlook based on their moves this off season, I do still think they're a very strong regular season team.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
And so Austin Reaves to me feels like a shoe.
Law Murray
A shoe.
Andrew
Agreed. To me, I, I almost had him number one. I just feel like it's, it's, it's easier to choose Cooper flag for me. And also if the Lakers aren't that good, it'll be harder for them to get two all stars. Yes. But they could be good. And if they are, I think like Austin is, he's a, he's a slam dunk. Yeah, he was my number two guy.
Law Murray
Yeah. It's going to be the same thing as last year. He, he easily could have been an all star last year. And what interrupted that conversation was the fact that he didn't play after Christmas until the first week of February. Durability, given how last year's regular season went and given how the postseason went, is going to be the biggest thing for Austin Reeves. He's shown durability in previous years. But when you are going to be expected to be that guy as far as how much you will be used offensively if you can hold up. Yeah, your ceiling is an All Star possible All Star selection and the Lakers are in a perilous state as far as their floor. I think this their their expectations. They'll be fine if everyone is on the floor, but they got three guys that if any of those guys miss so much as 10 days, it's going to be really challenging to see how they're going to be able to maintain and uphold a certain level of performance. So there's a lot riding on Austin Reeves. He we know he's good. He needs to be available.
Alex
Okay, so I get to go back to back here with my second pick. I actually thought that Law might be taking this player at number two when he said a wing who with a questionable shot in Texas. This is a player who last year was I know we drafted him in the first round. It seemed obvious coming off of his second season that he was going to be a future All Star. I'm of course talking about Amend Thompson then he has this season last year that felt like a disappointment in the moment and I think that a lot of that disappointment came from the fact that he was probably more affected by the absence of Fred Van Vliet than anyone else on that team in his second season. Just as an example of how things changed, he had he averaged 39 passes per game. Fred Van Vliet led the team with 59 passes per game last season. Amen. Thompson led the Rockets in passes per game with 53. So much more was put on his shoulders and as a result we came away feeling a little bit disappointed. But what I'm thinking of is one, I thought he got better as the season went on Post All Star Break 28 and five 64% true shooting. The other thing I'm betting on is that Sengun is not going to make it. I think that after two consecutive playoffs where he shot under 47% from the field as a center, I just feel like public opinion has swung against Shengoon, which could potentially affect his All Star candidacy. Maybe open the door for Amend Thompson. And I don't have any necessarily positive things to say about Amen shooting. I don't think he's suddenly going to shoot threes. But but I do think it was notable that he shot 78% from the line last year on 4.9 attempts per game. I do think if he's going to break through the ne that next level, that could be a way it could happen. He may never develop a shot. He's probably not a point guard, but I think that he can be a super impactful player in a lot of other ways. And with KD being 38, Fred Van Vliet coming back from injury, I think that the window has opened for, for the Amen Thompson All Star candidacy.
Law Murray
I love the, I love that pick because we never described a game like this and I feel like I am going to make an effort to change that. Amend Thompson led all, how can I say it? Non bigs in paint scoring. And I think people have to understand he was doing that while being the primary playmaker. Which, yeah, like Cooper flag, just not what I feel like is the best usage of Amend Thompson. Right. Like Amen Thompson is what we would call a playmaking wing. He can be a guy who can create for others, but for that to be the main thing that he did for a full season, I don't think is a. I think it's a disservice to him. He should be relieved from that and it's going to be very exciting to see what that looks like. That was not the plan for last year's Houston Rockets. Fred Winkley tore his ACL right before training camp. I don't know what Fred's going to look like, but this is not about Fred. It's not about kd. It's not even about Albie. It's about the fact that you have a special guy, your only top five pick that is on this level that could really break out in a way that we thought the breakout was going to be. Last year we saw how we ended the previous year, the 2025 season. So the paint scoring, we didn't even talk about his defense. The paint scoring for a man even in the absence of a jump shot, even with everyone knowing he has the ball because he's got to be the quote unquote, nominal point guard, I think that guy showed he's going to. He has a very exciting ceiling and you can see it manifest itself next year.
Alex
And doing all that paint scoring on one of like the worst space teams in the league, like just getting any help shooting wise, this upcoming season is going to be huge.
Andrew
Yeah, that's what I was going to say is like Van Vliet is a guy that like teams will guard because he takes a ton of threes. And that will be helpful because they really only have. They really only had two other guys that you had to guard from three last year. Like I just think that that's, that's a tough position to put. Amen. And so I think that will help for sure.
Alex
Okay, Law, your second pick.
Law Murray
Yeah. From the defending NBA champions, which is a pretty damn good place to try and get a first time all star. I gotta go with OG Anunoby. Okay.
Andrew
Yeah, yeah.
Law Murray
I mean he's done a lot in his career without having an accolade like this. He's got a very simple job and I think we're talking about guys who are more than likely going to be selected by, by coaches because the head coaches pick the reserves for all star teams. And I mean when you went on that level and when you perform the way he performed, when you are that kind of a difference maker when you do all the things right, like coaches love rewarding guys like that. I feel like one or two guys a year get something, get, get something like that. And I mean og, so it's not like he's any kind of old. You know, OG Anunoby is a player who even though he's been around for a while like OG isn't going to be 30 until next summer. So like, I mean it's not like he's a cliff threat in any way. If that dude is healthy, if he's going to lead the league in corner threes like he does, we know he scores inside the arc, we know how well he defends. He was an all defensive team selection. He's going to have the counting stats. He's going to be contributing to winning. I think that the coaches. There's increased competition in the east but I think if the Knicks are, if the Knicks have room to grow as far as their regular season performance, if they do that, there's room for either three All Stars or maybe OG gets a Carl Anthony talent spot. And, and the other part of the All Star is the international aspect that was introduced and OG's got that passport.
Alex
I really like that pick because I stared at OG for a really long time trying to construct the case in my head for, for how this could happen because he is not like he doesn't put up the traditional All Star numbers. But I agree with you that coming off of that finals run, the public perception of OG is at an all time high. If it's ever going to happen, it will be this year. He will ride that wave from that playoff performance into an all star game. So I do think if it's going to happen it would happen this year and he would be kind of like your classic one time all star. I think, I think that would be a. I really like that pick.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
Andrew,
Andrew
your second pick. Speaking of international players.
Alex
Oh, international. Okay. All right.
Andrew
I'm taking Franz Wagner.
Law Murray
Oh, man, I love that pick. I love it.
Andrew
That's my next pick. He. So his health is like the biggest issue. Only played 34 games last year in the month of November where he played the most games. He played 14 games. He averaged 23, 7 and 4. And is a guy that like does have like these traditional all star numbers. He is a very good player that I think because he is international, it might help him a little bit too to get onto an all star team. There aren't that many good wings in the NBA and he's one of them. Now this is going to hinge on like Sean Sweeney making the magic good enough to get two all stars. And I think it's possible and I think if he can put up like the numbers that he has, to me he's kind of a shoe in. And he's going into his sixth year. So he's a vet. He is a vet, which kind of checks that box. So I will take Franz Wagner.
Alex
And. And one thing you didn't mention that I think is really important is this is one of the first summers where he did not play for Germany.
Andrew
Yeah, true.
Alex
So he, he has had this extended break which seems like needed more than ever because of his injuries, like dealing with the high ankle sprain and then the calf strain. The only thing that I was questioning was his field goal Williams dropped from 19.4 per game two seasons ago to 14.9 with the addition of Desmond Bain. Just wondering like is he going to have enough scoring pop? Because I think two years ago he was like at 24 per game, dropped down to 20 per game. But the one thing that. Oh, go ahead, go ahead, Law.
Law Murray
I was going, I was going to say a lot of that 2025 season was with Palo out when Franz was out.
Alex
That's true.
Law Murray
And. And they both tore their obliques. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen. Okay. That is a rare injury. The other thing you got to add though, Alex is. And which is why you gotta really like Franz. You saw how Denny got to the all star game last year. That dude own the free throw line. And Franz Wagner has ascended on that level every season of his career, including this past season. So the field goal attempts drop. How did he still maintain 20 points per game even with a healthier Paolo Banchero, the presence of Desmond Bain, who takes a lot of shots. Even more. More health from a guy like Jalen Suggs and more touches for Anthony Black. It's because that dude is huge for his position, has a good handle and he utilizes it and weaponizes it to get to the free throw line at a high rate. It's something that people don't talk about because free throws don't make the highlights unless you're slandering Shay Gil, just Alexander. But that guy gets to the line at a high rate and if that continues, if that guy is over six free throw attempts per game going into next year for Sean Sweeney's team, he's going to score a lot of points for a good team or at least a competitive team.
Alex
That was exactly what I was about to say, love, because that was my final point. That it wasn't just that like he started getting to the line better. He significantly changed his ability to get to the line. His free throw attempt rate had never been above 30 and it was 39.1 last year. And so yes, I completely agree with you like that. That is how it's going to happen. I took Franz number one last year because I was so excited about him. Maybe it'll be a similar thing to Amen where, you know, we just kind of have like this weird season, disappointing for different reasons, and then we finally get like the real breakout that we've been waiting for. Andrew, your third pick.
Andrew
My third pick goes to Brandon Miller of the Charlotte Hornets. I mean this Guy is a 20 point scorer. He's been at the last two years. He was recovering from that wrist injury, which it takes time to come back from that. It took him a long time to come back from it. And now he's like a year removed from that recovery, which I think will be good for him. And he's a guy that in his second year took 10 threes a game. They weren't all great shots, but like we're dealing with like one of like the best shooters in the NBA. I know that like Con Canopel is perhaps better than him as a shooter, but Brandon Miller I think will like make himself known as like one of the best shooters in the NBA this next season as he kind of cements his career. It's a great score. I think that Charlotte now, even though like they don't have a lamelo and they're going to be a very different team, I think like everybody just thinks a lot more positively about Charlotte, which I think makes an impact on guys getting selected for an all star team. If you play for a team that just like feels hopeless, I think that you're less likely to make an all star team. And I don't think that's the direction of the Hornets. So I will give it to Brandon Miller for my third selection.
Law Murray
I want to say about Brandon, that guy is to Charlotte with Jalen Brown was to the Boston Celtics last year. Yeah, Someone is going to have to force a double team for the Charlotte Hornets. Lamelo ball absorbed so much defensive attention, especially once all those guys got healthy and they didn't just beat teams, they destroyed teams the second half of the year. And Brandon Miller con canopy they benefited from Lamello ball's gravity significantly. Well, that guy's not there anymore. But now Brandon Miller, who I don't think is the most efficient 20 point scorer around, well, he's his, his opportunity for volume is significant and he is going to be entering year four. I think you might hear about a contract extension for him before the start of next season. That guy's numbers could explode like, like you guys said just on volume alone. The fact that he attempts as many threes as he does. If he adds any level of like proficiency as far as how he's scoring in the paint, how he gets to the free throw line, I mean the ball is going to be in his hand so much more and it might not look pretty, but if they can tread water and he gets better, like that's the sweet spot for a guy who's going to put up numbers that are very hard to ignore.
Alex
So law, that brings us to your third pick.
Law Murray
Yeah, I think the line for me being excited about this has, has passed.
Alex
Okay.
Andrew
Okay.
Alex
That's exciting. That's exciting for me. I want to hear who you're gonna pick.
Law Murray
Yeah, man, I'm not, I'm not pounding the table for the, for, for these dudes. Now that is no disrespect to Aaron Gordon. I, I do want to put him on my board. He's a guy that. Look, man, didn't he have a 50 point game to start last season?
Alex
He sure did.
Law Murray
Yeah man. Like Aaron Gordon has put so much work into his game and we saw that Denver got their second all star. They finally happened for Jamal. And I'm very happy that Jamal Murray got his selection. I've told Aaron just in, in meeting him, you can do this. Like I've seen the work and obviously that team is good. It's feared because they won a championship. I don't really look at The Nuggets as that caliber team anymore. It's been three years and you got to reestablish yourself. New coach, front office been flipped over. We thought they would be deep last year. I did not. It turned out that their depth was overstated significantly. That team is in a weird space. Their one opportunity for surprise, for ceiling is for Aaron Gordon to continue to show all the skill improvement. The numbers have been great. The health has not. He looks like a guy who has just done way too much in terms of beating the crap out of others. I think that has taken a toll. You saw he missed playoff games last year. You saw he didn't even play half of last year's games. He's more perimeter oriented. I don't think his. He's 30 now, so it's not like a shock. But his bouncing what it was when we were debating, you know, dunk contest with Zach Levine a decade ago. But he's really skilled and if he can stay on the floor, demonstrate that skill and Denver can be as good as they usually are, then I think he's a pretty good candidate for a first time all star.
Alex
I'm really proud of us for how many vets we've selected today.
Andrew
We're trying to nail it. We're trying to get all of them.
Alex
My next pick, it may not seem that spicy at this point in the draft, but I want you to know that this player was ranked fourth on my big board originally on my big board which was 1212 deep. He wasn't even on it. And then I thought about some more. I was like, okay, I'll put him at 12. And then as I did more research, I kept bumping him higher and higher and higher till he was number four on my list. And I don't think you'll get is Nikhil Alexander Walker.
Andrew
That is the exact next player I was trying. I was hoping to take.
Alex
Listen, listen to my pitch.
Law Murray
Okay.
Andrew
No.
Alex
So he increased the scoring average, as we all know, from 9.4 to 20.81 Most Improved Player. He closed the season even stronger. He led the Hawks in scoring post all star break. Averaged almost 24 points per game over his last 20. He is an elite volume 3 point shooter. Did you know that among players who attempted at least eight threes per game, there were only 13 of them. He had the highest three point percentage at 39.9. Now shout out to Khan for only taking 7.9 per game so that that stat would be true. But speaking of Khan, did you know that Khan knipple and Nikhil Alexander Walker have basically the identical catch and shoot stats. Khan shot 42.4% on 6.1 catch and shoots per game. NA shot 42.6% on 5.8 catch and shoot threes per game. I think that the Hawks are going a little bit under the radar with everyone else's off season moves. But you look at who were their biggest losses from a 46 win team. It was Zachary Richache and Jonathan Kaminga, right? They added Dort and Wiggins, two guys who are definitely NBA rotation players. They're also not going to be taking shots away from Nikhil. After Trae Young's last game for the Hawks on 12 29, Atlanta went 3118 which was a 52 in pace, 8th best net rating in the league. And finally 11 of the last 13 most improved players made an All Star game. Now the two who didn't happen to be on his team, Dyson Daniels and C.J. mcCollum. So maybe that's not the greatest argument but still should be mentioned. I just think there's a possibility that Nikhil Alexander Walker is averaging close to like 24, 25 points per game this season and he has taken over someone like Jalen Johnson for the All Star Game. I get it. It's, it's, it's, it's a little spicy, unlikely to happen. But the jump he made last year and the way he's shooting the three ball, I just think there's potential there for something that we're not expecting.
Andrew
I love it. I think that if, if you are going to get a second Hawk on there or if Jalen Johnson like just has injuries like he struggled with throughout his career, I think like he could be a shoe in.
Law Murray
How do I. Yeah, yeah. Nikhil, his. It's, there's the volume part like last year like 20.8 points per game after never averaging more than 11 in his first six years. But the work that he put in on his shot was inspirational. Like that dude became a 90% free throw shooter. He became a 40% three point shooter. He showed that he could play the one, he could play the two. He come off the bench, he could start like he was, he was tremendous. And, and yeah, like I love the point about the fact that like guys that took minutes and shots are not going to be on the team this year. You know, like you're not trying to force a number one pick to work. You're not trying to force a guy who you traded for after giving up Porzingis to work. Like I think they're going to have a pretty stable. You're not, you're not building your team around Trae Young anymore. Like that team was built around Trae Young through camp. And we're not going to remember the 2026 Hawks like that because Trey wound up only playing 10 games for them. Like, there's, there's a real chance that you should believe Nikhil's improvement and sustainability going into next year.
Andrew
Counterpoint contract year. Dort.
Alex
I don't even know what that would mean.
Andrew
I'm just joking. I was going to bring this up though, one of his nicknames. If I got to select him, I was going to bring this up, but I'm going to bring it up anyways. One of his nicknames on Basketball reference is Popsicle.
Alex
Popsicle.
Andrew
And it's because people would make fun of him because he had such skinny legs. They look like popsicle sticks when he was growing up.
Alex
So yeah, they used to call me Chicken Legs.
Andrew
Shout out Popsicle.
Alex
My final selection. I still got a lot of names I like.
Andrew
Do you?
Alex
I know that law doesn't. Hasn't felt good for a while. I still feel really good. I got like six names I could talk about. I'm going to go with a guy who, if he hadn't been on A team that was 11 and 27 on January 14th when All Star voting ended, may have made the All Star game. And that is Michael Porter Jr. Pre all star break was averaging 25, 7 and 3 on 61% true shooting. That team. I don't, I'm not predicting they're going to be like a playing team or anything, but by adding Julius Randle, adding some of the other players, seeing what Jaeger Dillman did in summer league and actually just what he did in his rookie season, I'm feeling more confident that that team is going to be competent next season. Again, not predicting playing or anything, but I don't think they're going to be 16 games below.500 on the last day of All Star voting. And if that's the case, I think there's a chance that that MPJ could sneak in as either the last All Star pick or maybe an injury replacement wouldn't blow my mind because he's, we know he's going to have the stats. He's one of the, I mean the, the three point shooting season he had last year was absurd. So I'm, I'm betting more on the nets just being a slightly more competent team and him getting that recognition because usually if you're going to Be a first time all Star. You have to be on a somewhat decent team. Otherwise they're going to just take someone like Pascal Siakam like they did last year, who was also on a terrible team at the deadline. But they, Siakam's been an all Star before. The coaches know Siakam. So I think it's going to take a little bit more from the Nets for MPJ to do this, but I
Law Murray
think it's possible and I think the possibility increases for things that don't even have anything to do with actual basketball games. The Nets do not control their first round pick in 2027. It is a swap with the Houston Rockets, a team that we all expect to, you know, be interested in swapping with the Nets when the lottery happens. And so, you know, you make that Julius Randle trade, you have a very good head coach in Jordy Fernandez who has been hamstrung by the priorities of the front office and the organization. And yeah, I thought Michael Port Jr would have been an appropriate all star in 2026. So the fact that the Nets, they can't tank, you know, this is beyond, you know, the, the, the new lottery reform anyway. It's like the Rockets have that swap. So the Nets are going to be trying to win games. And it helps that MPJ is not new to Brooklyn. Like he played very well before y' all start break last year.
Alex
Salah, that brings us to your final pick. I'm assuming he's feeling great about it.
Law Murray
Yeah, you know, this final pick is not sentimental because I don't do that, but I would understand if people thought it would be. And it is a Vitza Zubots of the Indiana Pacers. He will be, he will be their starting center. You might as well treat him like their lottery pick given that the Pacers after the worst season in franchise history, donated their pick to the LA Clippers after the results of the lottery. Avitz's Zubots has a lot of pressure because of what he represents. Also, if it's Azubas is really good at doing what he's supposed to do on the floor. And now he's going to be playing with Tyrese Halliburton who is going to be making his return. We know that Tyrese does two things really well. Take care of the basketball and get the ball to players in spots where they can do something with it. And so this is probably Zhu's last best chance to show that he can do, do it, be an all Star again. Helps that he's a front court Player helps that he is international and helps that he's playing for a team that will be trying to win at all costs and trying to get back to the status that they were before Tyrese's injury. So I again, there's a real ceiling on Zoo. That dude doesn't shoot threes. He's not a guy who's going to get to the line at a high rate. There will be games where he just disappears because like, he's just not. It's not the right matchup or he's not in the game plan, but he's going to be as rested as he's ever been and playing with a team that's going to be pushing the pace. No pun intended. And pushing the pace means more opportunities to put up counting numbers. So I think he's got a great shot.
Alex
This is the second year in a row that Zubots has been drafted in this draft. Andrew, that brings us to your final pick.
Andrew
I'm going to do something that I'll probably regret and that's taking a rookie. I'm going to take Cam Boozer. I think Cam Boozer is the best player on the Grizzlies and I. It's not really like a shot at anybody else that's on that team. I think they're going to be a surprisingly decent team. I think they have like a nice roster around him and I think they are like, obviously like very ready to turn the page to this next group. And they've kind of cleared away pretty much the former group. They've brought in this new group of guys. I think Cam Boozer is like their guy. He's their A1 player and I think he's going to put up a ton of counting stats. I think if they are surprisingly good by like around the All Star break, I think like he could, he could make the All Star team. I think he could be the first rookie since Blake Griffin to, to break the mold here. So I'm going to take Cameron Boozer.
Alex
I do believe he would be the youngest All Star ever.
Andrew
Yeah, he would. He and the way his game kind of like fits out a little bit. No one says like, oh, he's raw or like he's got a lot of development needs to happen. Like he's the one guy that everybody says is like, he's NBA ready, he's got the NBA body, he's got the game. He was a better shooter than we thought he would be in summer league at least. He's like a more willing three point shooter than I thought he would be. And he was loud about it too. He was. So I. I just think. I don't know that I like anybody else. Like I consider probably like Josh Giddey. I considered Con Canipple but I don't think that they will get both Brandon Miller and Khan. So I may just. It's possible that I just miss and Con will. Will make it. I. Trey Murphy's on here but like Trey's on a team that I just don't know that anyone will even talk about when it comes to all star teams. So I just. I feel pretty confident that Cameron Boozle will be the best player on the Grizzlies and that will give him a shot.
Alex
I'd like to address two players that I have a feeling people will be surprised we did not draft.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
One you mentioned Khan, Knipple.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
I just want to say the reason I did not take con was looking at his on off numbers with Lamelo. His true shooting dropped from 67% to 60%. LaMelo was off the court.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
His points per possession 1.2 to 1.0. I think there's going to be a transition period figuring out what life looks like in Charlotte post Lamelo and that's probably going to happen in the first half of this season. I still think he could have a great season. We'll be, you know, at this point next year we'll be talking about how great Khan is, but there's going to be some type of adjustment which is why I couldn't get there with Khan. The other one is Dylan Harper, which we haven't mentioned yet. Averaged 1863 in the NBA Finals as a rookie. Shot 61% on two pointers. I can. I could not pick him because I do not know if he's starting. And it is incredibly rare to make an all star game as a bench player, especially as a second year player. Everyone thinks that Manu did it. He didn't. When he made it in 0405, he started 74 of 74 games. When he made it in 2010 11, he started 79 of 80 games. You have to go back to like Dwyane Wade and Dirk's final seasons, which those were, you know, I mean they were, they were still players. They don't really count.
Andrew
Yeah, I'm with you.
Alex
Before that you have to go back to Kobe, which was kind of his own thing. He was voted as an all star starter at 19. In a season where he started one game like really to find like just a normal bench player. You have to go back to Chris Gatling in 96, 97, who started one of 47 games. Kevin McHale is, like, the classic example. He did it several times. But now we're going back to, like, the 80s. Dan Marley did it. It is extremely rare, which is why I just can't get there with Harper until I know that he's starting.
Andrew
Yeah, yeah, I. I tried to make the case because I really like him. If we were, like, going off of, like, players that I like most believe in moving forward, he would be very high on that list. As far as, like, making the All Star team next year. I think it is. Yeah. Like, the case you made is perfect. Like, it's going to be really hard. Other players that I consider it, modest, Bozealous, I think has a chance to have, like, a really good year in Chicago, and then that might be kind of the end of the guys that I would, like, truly consider. Derek White is somebody that, like, will get brought up, but other than that, that's. That's probably the end of my, like, real list. Yeah.
Law Murray
You see my list right here. There's a reason I said what I said. You guys checked it off. Everyone appreciates y'. All.
Alex
Well, you guys prevented me from having to make my Kobe White case, which I did prepare because I was trying to think of, like, a vet who could come out of nowhere to make an All Star Game. And Kobe White was wildly productive on a per minute basis In Charlotte last year, this offense was built for his game. Like, per 36 minutes. I get it. It's per 36 minutes. He averaged over 29 points per game. Like, the only guys doing that are SGA Wimby, Luca Kawhi, Donovan Mitchell, Jalen Brown, Ant, Giannis Embiid, Curry, and Ty Jerome. But I. I just think there's, like, a chance that he steps into that lead guard role and he's averaging, you know, 24 points per game next year, and maybe he gets some buzz. And then the only other two I was started to make a case for was Zach. Edie. Yeah, for similar reasons to Cam Boozer. Like, what if the Grizzlies are the surprise team and Edie's averaging, you know, like 15 and 14 as they're starting center and he has crazy on offs, maybe. And then the other one was Walker Kessler.
Andrew
Like, what.
Alex
What if Walker Kessler goes to LA and all of a sudden he, like, does fix their defense and similarly is getting a ton of rebounds? He's. He's being fed by Luca. It's like the the easiest points he's ever scored in his life. And similarly, he's like at a 15, 14 stat line. Those are the last two guys I considered.
Andrew
Yeah, he, I mean, for the Lakers to get three guys would be pretty wild considering like all like the really, really good teams in the Western Conference.
Law Murray
Right.
Andrew
That like, it would be, it'd be hard to argue that this particular Lakers team deserves three.
Alex
Yeah. Okay, so our final results. Andrew drafted Cooper Flag, Franz Wagner, Brandon Miller, Cam Boozer Law drafted Steph Castle, OG Anunoby, Aaron Gordon, Evitza Zubots. And I drafted Austin Reeves, Amend Thompson, Nikhil Alexander Walker, and Michael Porter Jr. I think we did good.
Andrew
I think we did good.

Let's take a quick break. We come back, we're gonna do some trivia. And we're back after that quick break. Now it's time to just embarrass myself with some trivia.
Alex
Al that's right, Andrew. It's time for Andrew versus the Beat weekly tribute show. Now bi weekly or it's twice bi monthly, I suppose where Andrew goes head to head against NBA beat writer this week. Lawn Murray now in honor we talked about first time All Stars. All of the trivia questions to today are going to be about one time all Stars. Okay, one time all Stars players Who made the All Star Game once? And I think these are some of the most fun questions I've ever come up with.
Andrew
Oh, no.
Alex
Okay, so Law, you know Law, you know how to play eight questions. I see a number between one and eight to get us started.
Law Murray
Oh, man, we are in August and. Yeah, I'm going to go with the number eight then for sure.
Alex
Number eight number. Oh, wow. This is. This is a good one. This is actually the hardest one. I apologize up front. There are six one time All Stars who missed the actual All Star Game due to injury or in one case suspension. Can you name one of those players? These were guys who were. They made it to an All Star Game, but they didn't actually get to experience it because they were injured or in one case suspended. Can you name one of those players?
Unknown/Interjection Speaker
God.
Law Murray
Lord have mercy. Oh, man. Can I name. The easy answer is no, I can't. I'm. I'm really trying to jog. How long you gonna give me, man? We already been talking for a minute, huh?
Alex
I'll give you as much time as you want. Yeah, you can always edit it.
Law Murray
That's who got to be an All Star.
Alex
And then Chuck in that sad. It made the All Star Game and you don't.
Accenture Announcer
One time.
Alex
The one time you get to do it and you don't get to play.
Law Murray
Damn. I feel bad not even guessing like a player who's not that good. Man. I know this is not it. I just want to put a record, a name on there and say. Chris Gatling.
Alex
Chris Gatling. That is incorrect. Andrew.
Andrew
Um, God, I don't. This is an incredibly difficult question.
Alex
It is. But you can get one of these. I would say you get two of them.
Andrew
Say it again. Say. Say what the criteria is again.
Alex
One time All Stars who didn't play in the actual All Star Game due to injury or in one case suspension.
Andrew
Okay. Goodness. The guys I'm thinking of that got suspended were multi time All Stars. So I'm having trouble thinking of who the suspended player would have been.
Alex
You will not get that.
Andrew
Okay, I should stop. I should stop. Just stop.
Alex
I will tell you who it was.
Law Murray
Okay? I don't. I don't know.
Andrew
I have no answer.
Alex
Okay, the two I thought you had a chance to get. Kristaps Porzingis.
Andrew
Okay.
Alex
And Jameer Nelson.
Andrew
Jameer Nelson. I would have not gotten there.
Alex
Theo Ratliff, Cedric Ceballos, a guy named Steve Johnson, and then Jack Molinas. Have you ever heard that name in your life? Jack Molinas?
Andrew
No.
Alex
Okay, listen to this. Story. So this guy played at Columbia and bet the entire time he was there on his team against his team. Wasn't caught during school. He then goes to the NBA. He joins the Fort Wayne Pistons at age 22 in the 5354 season. Makes the all star game as a rookie. But he had been betting on the Pistons against the Pistons his entire rookie season. They found out right before the all star game suspend him for life. And he never played in the NBA again. Now as it would turn out.
Andrew
Wow.
Alex
Jack Molinas would go on to lead a pretty crazy life because all that betting, all that point shaving scandal. He was involved with the mafia. And he would eventually be killed while standing in his backyard by someone still unsolved to this day. But two days after his death, two days after he was murdered. The Los Angeles Times reported a possible link between the shooting of Jack molinas and the 1974 murder of his former business partner Bernard Guse Off. Guse off had been beaten to death in his Los Angeles apartment the year before and police never solved his murder. But molinas had collected $500,000 on an insurance policy on Gusev's life because he and Gustav held life insurance policies on each other as partners in a fur importing business.
Andrew
And this dude was a Hooper.
Alex
And he was a Hooper.
Law Murray
We needed NBA Twitter in the 1950s. Clearly.
Andrew
Wow.
Alex
That's just so crazy. To make the all star game as a rookie and then suspended immediately never to appear again.
Law Murray
Wow.
Andrew
And to be murdered because you're involved with the mafia. Unbelievable.
Alex
Yeah, there's a. There's a book written about it. I found some great stuff about Jack. Go look him up. Okay. Andrew, board is yours
Andrew
number one.
Alex
Okay. Number one. There are two. I forgot to do this part. There are seven one time all stars who have been elected into the Basketball hall of Fame. Name one.
Andrew
Oh my gosh.
Alex
This is kind of the sister question to that first question. These are the two hardest I would say.
Andrew
Yeah.
Law Murray
Wow.
Alex
So seven one time all stars that were elected in to the Basketball hall of Fame.
Andrew
I'll say. Is Horace Grant in the hall of Fame?
Alex
I don't know.
Andrew
I don't think he is.
Alex
But he is not on the list.
Law Murray
Law.
Alex
You have any guesses?
Law Murray
Yeah, I'm going to guess. Vladi Divas.
Alex
That is correct.
Andrew
Wow.
Law Murray
One point.
Alex
That was really a Vlad a question because I think that's the only one
Andrew
you had a Hell yeah.
Law Murray
It was a Vlad a question. I can't even remember who are the other ones? I wasn't watching the All Star Game. Like that.
Alex
That's Calvin Murphy, Dan Issle, Bill Bradley, Dick Barnett, Nat Sweetwater Clifton and Don Barksdale.
Andrew
Yeah, you gotta go back. You gotta go way back.
Law Murray
Yeah, Blade was the only one I was gonna. I was gonna get off Rip. I'll tell you that much. Barksdale remember a damn thing Vladi said in his hall of Fame induction. So.
Alex
I read a lot last night about Nat Sweetwater Clifton. So he was the second black player to sign an NBA contract. And he is also the oldest first time All Star in NBA history. He was 34 when he made the All Star Game.
Andrew
Wow.
Alex
All these guys have awesome Wikipedia entries, by the way. Just look up any old NBA player. They all have interesting lives.
Andrew
That's wild.
Law Murray
Telling you, we cover a marvelous gang.
Alex
All right, Law, you're on the board and the board is yours.
Law Murray
The board is mine. I. Let's go. Let's go with three.
Alex
Question number three. All right. We talked about how we had six first time all stars last season. Danny Avdia, Jalen Duran, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Johnson, Jamal Murray and Norm Powell. But they aren't the only active players who are one time all stars. There are 15 other active players who made one all star game as of right now. And we're going to name them all. So Law's going to give me a name, then Andrew will give me a name. We'll go back and forth. So these are active players in the league right now who have made one All Star game. But not from last year's class.
Law Murray
Not from last year's class. Well, we gonna start with Mike Conley Jr. Mike Conley.
Alex
That is correct. Andrew.
Andrew
Dlo.
Alex
Dlo. Correct.
Law Murray
Not from last year's class. Right.
Alex
Not from last year's class.
Law Murray
Christaps Rozingus.
Alex
Christaps Porzingis.
Andrew
Dang it.
Alex
That is correct, Andrew.
Andrew
I was gonna. You mentioned him earlier. I think Van Vliet has only made one.
Alex
Yep. Fred Van Vliet. On the list. Back to law.
Law Murray
Back to me. Back to me. Tyler Hero.
Alex
Tyler Hero. That is correct.
Law Murray
Yeah.
Alex
Andrew.
Andrew
Jalen Williams.
Alex
Yes. J Dub. On the list.
Law Murray
Law. Pal. Ben.
Alex
Carol Palan Caro. Also correct. You guys are doing great, Andrew.
Andrew
You guys doing great. Andrew Wiggins.
Alex
Andrew Wiggins. One time allstar. The Golden State Warriors. Back to Law. We have seven names remaining.
Andrew
Seven.
Law Murray
Seven. And I guarantee you some of these dudes played before 4K was introduced. Lamello Ball.
Alex
Oh yeah.
Law Murray
Lamelo.
Alex
On the list.
Andrew
Andrew Brooke Lopez.
Alex
Brook Lopez. One of the old guys. He's actually the oldest on this list. In terms of when he actually made the All Star Game, how long ago was that? Was that like 09? No, that was his rookie season. It was 12 13.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
For the Nets.
Andrew
To the Nets. Yeah.
Law Murray
Yeah. All right. All right. Let's lock in. Let's figure. Let's figure out who.
Alex
Okay, Law is locking in.
Law Murray
Yeah. Let's figure out who we're missing, man.
Alex
There are five names remaining, all active players who have made the All Star Game one time.
Law Murray
Can't believe this All Star stuff.
Alex
And I'll let you know now, all of them will make you mad when you hear them.
Law Murray
God, that's such a threat, bro.
Alex
I'm just letting you know when I read off these names.
Law Murray
Yeah, yeah. I'm already mad. And I have. And I'm still. I'm still eligible.
Alex
Still in it.
Law Murray
Yeah, I'm still in it somehow. Damn, man. Who the hell do we be like? Oh, he was an All Star, and that was it. God damn,
Alex
Andrew, how many more do you have?
Andrew
I. I think I have two.
Law Murray
Two. Okay. I can't believe there are only 30 NBA teams.
Andrew
Only 30 remind me of the ones that we've named.
Alex
Tyler Hero, Jdub, Paulo Lamelo, Van Vliet Wiggins, Mike Conley, Dlo Porz, Brooke Lopez.
Law Murray
Okay. Okay.
Andrew
I think I have three.
Law Murray
Yeah. This is going to really want to come down to whether I want to donate this to Andrew or not. And I mean, I can tell you, I, I, I really, I really don't. I really don't. Okay. This will be a swing because I'm just going to say it. Dejounte Murray
Alex
is correct.
Andrew
Wow.
Alex
Law stays alive with Dejounte Murray.
Andrew
DeAndre Jordan, I believe, only made one All Star team.
Alex
DeAndre Jordan made an All Star team and is still in the NBA.
Andrew
Let's go.
Alex
That means there are renames.
Andrew
Yeah, no kidding.
Alex
He got two guaranteed years, right?
Law Murray
Yeah, yeah. Shout out to him. He's going to get to. He's going to get to 20. He deserves it. That's my guy.
Alex
I feel like that would be a good biography, the DeAndre Jordan biography. Oh, he played with so many guys.
Andrew
Agreed. It would be very fun. He played for, like, some very notable teams.
Alex
Andrew saw him in an airport before. He was.
Andrew
That's true. That's true. I did. I ran into him and he. I was like, hey, would you mind if I took. If we took a picture? And he was like, you know who I am? So, yeah, you're DeAndre Jordan. He was like, he was just bewildered that somebody knew his name. So cool.
Alex
That's so cool because he's so tall.
Andrew
I feel like he's so tall. He's so tall.
Alex
So you all have gotten 12 of the 15.
Law Murray
There are. There are, man. Man, so damn, Andrew, I almost wanna like, I almost want you to eat on this, man. Like, shout out to you, Batman,
Unknown/Interjection Speaker
who
Law Murray
is still in the NBA, bro, I don't even wanna. I don't. I don't wanna slip because Alex gonna count it. Damn, man. Like, I'd be thinking of guys who are like, coaching right now. That's not the answer. That's not. It's not what we're answering right now. Oh, my God. One time NBA player, one time all star and played in the NBA last year, which means they're technically active. And you said it's gonna make me mad. Like I said, I'm already mad. So, yeah, I'm already mad. Man, My brain is so broken right now. Bro,
Alex
you've gotten 12. You got to give yourself a little credit, Law.
Law Murray
Yeah, but this is a competition, man. It's a competition. It's a competition. So I can't give myself too much credit because this ain't gonna be it. Who's a one time All Star dog? Like, that's what's killing me.
Andrew
Like,
Law Murray
You laughing. I'm about to. I'm bothered. I'm about to. I'm gonna give it. I'm gonna give this back to you, bro. You laughing at me.
Andrew
But
Law Murray
this is. This is actually torture. Like, this is. I. I'd rather take us one of them Singapore sticks. Y' all gonna keep this banter in there? Damn. This is not cool. Like, I'm. I'm so, like, not happy to be here right now.
Alex
That should be like the slogan for Andrew versus the be. We should play that up at the beginning.
Andrew
I'm so not happy to be here right now.
Law Murray
Like, oh, my God. Oh, wait. Not last year. Not. Not 2026, but 2025. Evan Mo work. Evan Mo was a first timer. He didn't make it last year.
Alex
You got there. Okay, so there are two names remaining. I think Andrew has one more name.
Law Murray
Yeah, that's. That's what I'll. That's what I was thinking of.
Andrew
Marketing.
Alex
Yeah, Lowry Marketing. Which means for Law to get the point.
Law Murray
I gotta get the last of these modes.
Alex
You gotta get the Last guy the 15th name. I don't want to give any hints.
Law Murray
Oh, man. Who the hell made it and decided they were done with the All Star Game? Like, and not on purpose because there's been Dudes who obviously decided on purpose that they ain't, like, all Stars, right? So, like, like, 90 of the league, they want that vacation. Damn. Who just, like, lucked up in that John? I'm trying to think of the season where, like, everybody, like. Like, we had Covet, but, Man, who. Who could be that last guy? All right, Alex, on a scale of 1 to 10, how mad am I going to be?
Alex
Like, how what? How mad are you gonna be on
Law Murray
a scale of 1 to 10? Like, how mad I'm gonna be? And. And I would say base it off of how good they were last year, like, because clearly there's some dudes that I'm not thinking of, and it's because they're not, like, dudes that I was really invested in last year. You see what I'm saying?
Alex
Based on last year, I would say, like, 5.
Andrew
A 5. A 5.
Alex
6. But I think it. I think you'll be a 10, though, for a different reason.
Law Murray
This is so not cool, bro.
Alex
Like, you've made it all this way.
Law Murray
Yeah.
Alex
14 of the 15 names.
Law Murray
Like, who could it be that wasn't a pick last year? Like, who's going to, like, make me thoroughly and comprehensively upset, man. And I feel like if somebody that's really freaking, like, like, you gonna tell me? It's, like, somebody who's about to make a minimum this year, Like, God damn.
Andrew
I actually think I know who it is.
Law Murray
Damn. Damn. That's Taunton right there. That's not cool, bro. That's not cool, bro.
Alex
Are you trying to get me to call a foul on Andrew?
Andrew
Oh, no. Oh,
Law Murray
Jared Allen. Yes.
Andrew
That's it.
Alex
Oh, wow.
Andrew
I cannot believe that we got there.
Alex
Okay, I'll be honest. The reason I said potentially 10 out of 10 is because you just had said Mobley.
Andrew
Yeah, it's like.
Law Murray
I mean, Evan Mobley got to be better, man. Evan Mo can't be on this list after this year, bro.
Andrew
Yeah. For real. Yeah.
Alex
I think. I mean, marketing, J Dub, Mobley, they all have a shot.
Andrew
Yeah. Yeah.
Alex
Wow. So, Law, after all that, you were up 3, 0.
Law Murray
That's not true. Yeah, that's not enough, bro. You. Regis filled in the hell out of that segment.
Alex
Doesn't that feel good? You don't feel good? How can you not feel good right now?
Law Murray
I prefer to sweat after I put in work on the. On the. On the bench press, man. Not before, man. Oh, yeah. I'm definitely dressed for the gym right now. So who.
Andrew
Who's up now?
Alex
Andrew.
Andrew
Okay, two.
Alex
Two. Okay. I'm gonna Name three one time All Stars who are now retired to earn the points. You're going to tell me the last NBA franchise that they played for. Okay, so you get one point per correct answer. So I'm gonna read off three names. You're going to tell me the last team they played for. Here are the three names. Chris Kamen, Tyson Chandler, Danny Granger. And you could go in any order, whichever one's your.
Andrew
Chris Kamen.
Alex
Tyson Chandler. Danny Granger. Danny Glass uniform they wore in an NBA game.
Andrew
Yeah. Wow.
Law Murray
Danny Granger.
Andrew
Who did Danny Granger play for last? I think that Danny Granger was on the Heat last.
Alex
Wow. That's correct for one point.
Andrew
Chris Kamen.
Alex
Chris Kamen, the caveman.
Andrew
Wow. It's hard to imagine him not wearing the Clippers jersey.
Alex
It's hard to imagine him not in the NBA. You know, Just feels like he's always been there. I can't believe it's been so long to watch Chris Cayman play.
Andrew
It's crazy that he made the All Star game.
Alex
No, it's not. It's crazy he didn't make more.
Andrew
It is crazy he didn't make the all star game. You're both right. I think he played. I think he played for Portland, but I don't know if that was his last stop, but I'll say Portland.
Alex
He did play two seasons in Portland, so that is another point. And can you get Tyson Chandler?
Andrew
Tyson Chandler. I should be able to get Tyson Chandler.
Alex
Are you just swapping jerseys in your head?
Andrew
Well, I'm just trying to think. He went Chicago. He played for the Hornets. He played for. It's funny because like the Thunder fans really wanted him to be on the Thunder. But he did play in Oklahoma City for the Hornets.
Alex
Chris Kamen, the year he made the all star game, he was like 19 and 9. A shot 49% from the field.
Andrew
Wow.
Alex
As a center.
Andrew
Wow.
Law Murray
Golly.
Andrew
I, I want to say, I want to say the Lakers was his last team. Tyson Chandler.
Alex
Law, you have a chance to steal a point. Do you remember Tyson Chandler's last team?
Law Murray
I remember when he played for the Lakers. I also remember the Suns. I'm gonna go with the Suns.
Alex
That is also incorrect.
Law Murray
Damn.
Alex
Jason Chandler's last team that he played for during the 1920 season bubble season was the Houston Rockets.
Law Murray
Oh, wow.
Andrew
I forgot about that.
Law Murray
The year they canceled centers, by the way.
Andrew
That's true.
Alex
They canceled centers that year. Yeah, but the year before Lakers, year before that was sun. So you guys.
Law Murray
Damn.
Alex
Okay, Law board is yours. It's now three to two, three to Two.
Law Murray
Game six.
Andrew
Game six.
Alex
Okay, it's not that question. There's one question that's going to infuriate you both. Okay, question number six. In 2004, there were six first time all Stars. Now, as we've discussed, that isn't very unique. We get an average of 6 first time all Stars each year. What is somewhat unique for 2004 though is that all six of those first time all stars would also end their careers as one time all stars.
Law Murray
Oh, that's name two.
Alex
That's rude of those players.
Law Murray
Oh my God.
Alex
So all you got to do, there's six of them. 2004 All Stars.
Andrew
2004. Who made an All Star game
Alex
in 2004 and never made another one?
Law Murray
Oh my gosh.
Alex
Six of them. Isn't that crazy?
Andrew
Yeah, yeah, sure.
Alex
Yes.
Andrew
This song is awesome.
Alex
Yes. That's very interesting. Alex, thank you for all this deep research you did. That interests me very much. Do you have any other fun tidbits to tell me?
Law Murray
Hey. Hey, Andrew, you watch Are you afraid of the dark before?
Andrew
Yes. Yes.
Law Murray
Yeah. You remember the first episode with the phantom cat?
Andrew
Yes.
Law Murray
Yeah.
Andrew
Yeah.
Law Murray
Alex, is that cab driver that.
Andrew
He is the cab.
Law Murray
He's absolutely the cab driver from that episode.
Alex
Are you afraid of the dark? What was that on Nickelodeon? Oh, did you watch Guts?
Andrew
Do you have it?
Alex
Do you have it? Guts?
Law Murray
Oh, man, I didn't even. I don't even know if I had NBA Live 04. It ain't helping me now.
Alex
I definitely did NBA Live before. Oh, you know, it'd be a fun game to try a trivia game to remember who were the COVID athletes for all the old NBA games. I'm trying to think 04. My body wants to say Carmelo.
Law Murray
Okay, so do you want. Do you want a. Do you want an 04 all star?
Alex
It was Vince Carter bc you want
Law Murray
an 04 all star? Yes. I think I got one for you. Ron Artest.
Alex
Yes. He was a one time all Star. And that was the one all star game he made.
Law Murray
You damn right it was.
Alex
There are five other names. Could you get another one?
Law Murray
Can I get another one?
Alex
Law, did you ever play NBA inside drive for the original Xbox?
Law Murray
Nah, I wasn't an Xbox child. And if I was, it probably would have been corrupted.
Alex
Well, if you're in a store and they're selling an old Xbox with MB inside drive, either 2002, 2003 or 2004, I'd recommend picking it up. Best basketball game ever made.
Law Murray
I thought you were going to tell me that there was a 04. I once hit one time All Star on the COVID of all three of those seditions.
Alex
No, I know. Vince Carter was one of them. AI was one. Thank you for giving me this trivia. So all I want to talk about is NBA inside drive.
Law Murray
Who was a damn 04 all star. All right. Because. Because I sweated enough on. I'm going to say Jamal Mashburn.
Alex
That is incorrect.
Law Murray
Andrew. Sorry. Sorry. Law.
Andrew
I think. I think this was the Jamal McGlore.
Alex
Yeah.
Accenture Announcer
Wrong.
Alex
Jamal. Jamal.
Andrew
Damn it, man.
Law Murray
That's. Man.
Alex
Now the one I thought you guys would get is just like the classic one time All Star. Michael Redd.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
Kenyon Martin. Andre Kirolenko.
Andrew
Okay.
Alex
Sam Cassell.
Andrew
Oh, wow.
Alex
Which makes sense. That was the year they went to the conference finals.
Andrew
Correct? Okay.
Law Murray
Yes, that is correct.
Alex
Okay, so it's now four to three. Andrew has control of the board. You're down by one four. Hell yes.
Law Murray
Oh, no.
Alex
I'm going to name four NBA players from the 1950s. Three of them are one time all stars. One of them made the all star game five times in his career. Which one is it? Okay, so I'm going to read four names for you.
Andrew
Which player from the 1950s made the all star game five times? Yes.
Alex
Out of these four. Because three of them made it one time. One of them made it four times.
Law Murray
So in other words, one of these is not like the other.
Alex
Correct. Here are the names. Woody, Slingshot, Salisbury, Max Slats, Zaslovsky Vinegar. Vince Barilla or Andy the Wizard Philip. Would you like me to read those again?
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
Okay. We have Woody, Slingshot, Salisbury, Max Slats, Zaslovsky, Vinegar, Vince Barilla or Andy the Wizard Phillip.
Law Murray
It's funny because he actually said that in black and white.
Andrew
God. I'll do the. The Philip one.
Alex
Andy the Wizard Philip.
Andrew
Yeah.
Alex
That is correct.
Law Murray
Yes.
Alex
And not only. Not only is that correct. Callback. You know who replaced Jack Molinas in the All Star Game when he was suspended for betting on his own team?
Andrew
Andy. Phillip.
Alex
That's right. Andy Handyman Andy. His other nickname. Philip.
Andrew
Unbelievable.
Alex
Unbelievable. Unbelievable.
Andrew
Can you believe it?
Law Murray
That's crazy. Like he. Alex got these questions with the morning newspaper and a glass of milk.
Alex
Okay, two questions remain. Law. You're now down by one. Either five or seven.
Law Murray
Let's go. Let's. Let's. Let's go at five. I feel like this is going to be a comic relief episode for me.
Alex
Okay, which of the following one time All Stars was the only one to not be a replacement selection? Okay, so I'm going to name five recent one time All Stars. Four of them were replacements, meaning someone else got hurt. And that's how they got their one All Star. One of them was just selected to the team. So the names are Goran Dragic, Kyle Korver, Chris Kamen, Devin Harris, Mo Williams. Again, those names are Goran Dragic, Kyle Korver, Chris Kamen, Devin Harris, Mo Williams. Only one of those made the All Star game without having to be an injury replacement.
Law Murray
Right, right. I'm gonna. Man, I'm gonna go with Mo because the Cavs are just that good. Mo Williams.
Alex
That is incorrect.
Andrew
Okay, so the other ones are Kyle Korver. Who are the other ones?
Alex
Chris Cayman, Devin Harris, Gordon Dragic.
Andrew
They all feel very replacement coded. Every single one of them. Rude.
Law Murray
Very rude. Only one of those can hurt me, by the way.
Andrew
Devin Harris.
Alex
It is Devin Harris.
Law Murray
Yes.
Alex
Now that brings us to our final question. Andrew, you're currently ahead by two.
Law Murray
Is this the question that you said both of us would like?
Alex
No, I thought. I thought you would be annoyed by my 1950s NBA names, because how would you possibly get that correct? But Andrew, did he guess the Wizard? Which is kind of unfair when you think about it because his name is Andy the Whizzer. And Andy. Andrew, I bet that's where your brain went.
Andrew
I had some. I have some Andy biases.
Alex
It's true. Inside job. Okay, number seven. The only way that this game can continue. Oh, I'll let you know in a second. Mehmet Okur made his only All Star game during the 2007 season, playing for the Utah Jazz. O' Kerr was one of the earliest stretch bigs, being only the fourth player 6' 11 or taller to hit 100 threes in a season following Dirk Sheed and Rafa France. What was the most three pointers Okur ever hit in a single game? Now you get to choose who answers first. Andrew, you can make Law answer first and you go higher or lower. Or you answer first and then Law would go higher. Lower. The only way this game can go on, Andrew, is if you make Law guess and Law gets it exactly correct, he would get a bonus point which would tie the game.
Andrew
I'll give. I'll give Law a chance to tie.
Law Murray
Oh, Law.
Alex
Okay, Law, all you have to do is tell me the most threes Mehmet Okur ever hit in an NBA basketball game and you can get two points and tie the game.
Law Murray
I'm gonna say. Yeah, I'm just gonna say six.
Alex
All right, Andrew, would you like to go higher or lower?
Law Murray
Wow.
Andrew
Mehmet Okur. I will say, Golly, that's a good number. That's a good job. I'll say under and the correct answer is
Alex
six, which means Law has tied Andrew six, sending us into overtime. And I've got a doozy of a tiebreaker question for you. Would you believe it, we're going to do another over under question. Okay, now last time Andrew got to choose who answers first. So this time, Law, you'll get to choose who answers first. The question is what is Chris Kamen's career high in points?
Law Murray
Oh my gosh.
Alex
Now you can make Andrew answer first and then you go higher or lower or you can answer first and then Andrew will go higher or lower.
Law Murray
You got an Andrew the Caveman.
Alex
Chris Kamen career high in points.
Andrew
Chris Kaman the Caveman. Golly, 31.
Alex
31. Law, would you like to go higher or lower than 31 to break the tie and win this week of Andrew
Law Murray
versus the beat Higher.
Alex
Chris Kamen once upon a time scored 29 points in a game which means Andrew wins the he never scored 30. He never scored.
Andrew
All star team.
Law Murray
How you almost score 20 a game without a 30 point game?
Alex
That actually is kind of crazy.
Law Murray
That's crazy to me.
Andrew
Levels of consistent we can only admire from Chris Kamen.
Law Murray
That's wow. Oh my God. Wow.
Andrew
