On today's show, we're talking to Sam vesini about the 2026 NBA Draft. We're just gonna pepper him with so many questions. It's gonna be amazing. And then we'll finish with some trivia. With me, as always, is my good friend Alex Spears. Alex, what's up?
E
Happy Thanksgiving.
D
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody. This is publishing on Friday, so we're recording earlier in the week but publishing Friday. So if you're maybe driving or flying somewhere, you get to listen to some NBA draft talk with the best and the biz, Sam Bassini. Sam, thanks for coming on Slam and Jam.
F
Andrew. I'm so happy to be here. I'm so thrilled. We had a great conversation to start this episode offline.
D
We did.
F
I am just so, so thrilled and so excited. I just got done talking for two hours for my show and not even A second of that has left me not energized because of the energy that particularly Al has brought to the show as opposed to what Andrew's bringing.
D
That's right. Let's, let's start with the top three prospects. We haven't gotten to see much of Darren Peterson yet due to a hamstring injury. He was number one in your most recent mock draft and is billed as a do it all guard who can play on ball, off ball. How does he currently project as a playmaker and would you expect him to be like a primary playmaker at some point in the future?
F
Yeah, I do. I think that the way that he improved throughout his high school career is really what's most impressive to me. He's somebody that kind of added something to his game every single year in high school and particularly in the senior year. You know, while he played it prolific it was. He got so good at making reads out of ball screens and was so consistent at reading that backline defender and finding what was available. I thought he was so, so sharp in terms of his timing. I thought he was so sharp in terms of his just reads, you know, never seemed to be rushed. He's a very strong ball handler. He's somebody that can deal with the pressure of, you know, when you blitz a ball screen. He's somebody that's very happy to just slice and dice defenders and drop coverage. Because he's such an effective pull up shooter. I think that he's just one of the most complete guard prospects I've evaluated is the reality. He is very explosive around the basket, be able to finish above the rim in half court settings. He has a real mid range game as a shooter. He can get to a floater. He can just get to a pull up jumper on sidesteps going to his left or to his right. He is a real pull up three point shooter as well. There's just very little he doesn't bring to the table at the end of the day. And those guys tend to be guys that you want the ball in their hands for the full game. And everything that I've seen from Darren throughout high school and the little bit we've seen of him at Kansas to this point continues to reinforce that.
E
So Sam Camp Boozer has been very productive at Duke so far, averaging 21, 10 and 4. In your last draft article you wrote about the concerns from some scouts surrounding his finishing against bigger opponents. But you've also written in the past about how good his footwork is on the block. So I was wondering why do you think the footwork hasn't translated in some of these tougher matchups?
F
Yeah, so I, I think that this was a mis evaluation on my part in the assumption that the footwork on the block would translate quicker to footwork on his gathers, on his drives and things like that. Right. So my working theory on Boozer right now, and I've kind of said this a couple places, but he's incredibly productive. He's going in the top three of the draft. To me, like, no questions asked, he might go number one is the reality. Like, I think he is that good. And I think we have to couch every single conversation we have with these top three guys as we are grading them on a different standard than everybody else. Right. Because they are potential franchise alters in some way, shape or form. My current working theory with Cam is that he was basically this size or close to it from the time he was like a freshman sophomore in high school. Right? Uh, maybe not quite as strong in his physical. And he like wasn't 245, 250 pounds, but he was big. He was bulkier than everybody. He was strong. Like he's been able to play the same exact game from the time he was a freshman until now. And he's not even that ineffective playing it now, even as a score. But because of that, finishing at the rim in high school statistically was just never really a problem for him. Right? And now that he's going up against bigger, more athletic players, it is because. Of course it is. Because you have to adjust and you have to figure out ways to win based on skill as opposed to based on just being stronger and bigger than everybody and more powerful and having touch. Right. I think that where in Boozer is like known as this really high level worker, somebody that will tirelessly try to improve his game. I think that where he focused a lot of his energy on improvement was with his perimeter game, right? Figuring out how to handle in ball screens, figuring out how to knock down shots off the dribble, figuring out how to knock down shots off the catch. And for all those reasons, we love his game, right? Like, we love what Cam has become as this well rounded player who's awesome at reading the court when he gets doubled, who can make passes out of ball screens, who can short roll effectively and make passes, who can actually operate ball screens. In four or five actions with Pat and Gongba, and even with four two actions with Isaiah Evans shooting across. That's kind of one of my favorite actions that I've seen in the early portion of the year because of how much of a problem it creates in these ghost or slip actions with Isaiah, because of how good of a shooter he is, how much of a mismatch problem Cam Boozer is, everything that goes into that. But I think that because he has always been that size and has always been so strong and physical, he hasn't really had to worry about the footwork on his gathers and on his drives. And he's always been able to go through guys once he gets ahead of steam. Now that he's not able to go through guys, he's had to adjust and so far the adjustments haven't been amazing. He's just kind of trying to power up and go off two feet and go through guys and throw up more difficult shots at the rim. And I think that it's just going to take a minute for him to adjust is the reality. He's not overly big. He is 6 foot 9. I don't know if he's going to measure at 6 foot 9 without shoes, frankly. He is not wildly long like he. It's not like he's a guy that has like a 73 wingspan at 69, I believe. Like, I think it's probably going to be more like 7 foot 71, something like that. So we have to win with touch and we have to win with Euro steps and decel and gathers and all, all things that he's very capable of adding. We see them in different portions and parts of his game. We see the touch, we see different things. I think it's just going to take time for him to figure it out and that will be the next step in Cam Boozer's evolution. But right now, in the two games that he's played against Texas and Kansas at the time of this recording, I think he's like 7 for 19 at the rim or something, which is not a great number. And he's just going to have to figure out how to adjust.
E
So a lot of the talk has been about his offense. Could you just remind me, like, what are your expectations for his ceiling as a defensive prospect?
F
So I think he's actually like a way underrated defender. He's not going to be like an all defense guy necessarily, but he is really smart. He is constantly aware, like this is what held true at Duke, from the scouts I've talked to and just from like watching on tv frankly. But when I went to Hoop Summit, he was like very clearly the loudest, most communicative player on defense. Even in that setting where everybody's just like coming together. Maybe not for the first time in a lot of cases, but, you know, a team that is being brought together for the week with a new coach and everything like that. He was the loudest guy that was communicating and talking and making sure everyone knew where their reads were and everything that continues to hold true at Duke. I think he's a really, really smart, talkative defender and he knows where he's supposed to be. Very hard to go through his chest. I think he's somewhat underrated laterally as a mover. North south is a little bit more of a question mark. Not terrible, but not amazing. Positioning is always really good. He's just a very fundamentally sound defender. Not necessarily a guy that's going to be a, you know, all defense guy.
D
I would guess AJ DeBance, the guy.
F
That he reminds me of. It's just like very similar to Kevin Love to me, just like more advanced in terms of perimeter, you know, game and honestly a little bit more advanced on defense than where Kevin was. But, you know, if I told you you were getting, you know, more advanced Kevin Love, you'd be like, oh, cool, I'm getting a Hall of Famer. Great. Like, you know what I mean? Like, that's exciting. Now he has to improve in the areas that I've mentioned already. You know, I think that he will need to become an even better shooter throughout the course of his career because Kevin got to the point where he was pretty lethal as a shooter, but that's what it reminds me of. Like Kevin Love at ucla, who went in the top five and is probably going to end up in the hall of Fame at some point. You know, is terrific, terrific player. And I think Cam is an even more advanced version of that, is what it feels like to me.
D
Let's talk about Debancer, who is also off to a really strong start this season for byu. Everyone talks about his physical tools, but how would you compare his physical tools to other like wing prospects like Paulo Tatum, RJ Barrett, it that were like high level prospects.
F
Yeah, I mean, spectacular in terms of the tools themselves. They match up with just about anybody, like physically listed. I think at 6, 10, I think he's probably going to be more like 6, 9, long enough, you know, 7 foot, 7 foot, 1 wingspan not going to be like crazy, crazy long, but long enough to where when you combine it with his height, it's a real difference maker. Explosive, very explosive off the ground. But the difference for him compared to, you know, some of the other more questionable guys, even like RJ Barrett I think is probably somebody that you can draw a real differentiator with here is that AJ is so flexible. Like the way that he plays with bend and is able to gain leverage. Like that's why he lives at the foul line right now is because he is just able to out leverage his opponents in significant ways. When he gets downhill, like watch how low that he gets on his drives in a straight line it is different than most other very high level guards and wings. Now AJ I think has a few more like, a few more like non negotiable questions maybe is the way to put it where like Cam is going to be an effective NBA player in some regard. He's too smart, he's too skilled, he's a great passer, he's a smart defender. Like the upside might not be quite as high as what AJ could bring at some point, but I think AJ has like more improvement areas to his game that he has to improve to get to a certain level in the NBA. Like defensively I think he has not been awesome off the ball so far. I think it's been somewhat messy. The jump shot is fairly flat. He can make them from the mid range from three, it's a little bit more of an adventure. And he doesn't seem wildly confident with the three point ball. In terms of his passing. He's an unselfish player. He's not like a live dribble passer necessarily. Like he doesn't throw those, you know, just with one hand like where he's coming off of ball screen and like throws like a whip to the corner or something like that. Like you don't really see that with him. But he's unselfish. Like he'll jump, stop, find where the defense is coming from, find where the help is and then hit the kick out. It's. There are holes to his game that he will have to improve. But I think that because he's starting at such a massive, massive advantage point in terms of being able to get paint touches in a straight line. The other thing I would mention is like he's not a great ball handler right now in terms of changing direction, being able to shake a defender. I think he's kind of loose with the ball right now, frankly. I thought we saw that in the first half of the Connecticut game, particularly where Connecticut was able to like really dig into his handle and frustrate him. But if you give him a straight line to the rim, like it's curtains. He's either getting the line or he's Scoring at the rim. So it's a, it's an interesting skill set. And he will be somebody where, if you're a team that is like, desperately looking for somebody who can just create advantages across the court constantly, he's somebody that you will be immensely interested in if you're. If you're a team that feels like you have the advantage guy already. Like, if you're Oklahoma City where you have Shea and J Dub and you might have this Clippers pick, I might be a little bit less enthused about AJ And I might be a little bit more enthused about Cam or definitely more enthused about Darren because Darren kind of just fits everywhere as a, you know, guard, lead guard, scorer, who can play both on and off the ball. AJ Might be a little bit more fit, dependent. But is a player that has as high of a ceiling once he gets to the NBA as he wants to have, frankly, it's kind of up to him how great he wants to be, because if he's able to fix the shot and he's able to really engage and hone in on what he can do defensively and everything, like, the ceiling is immense for AJ it's just kind of up to him on improving the little areas he has to improve.
D
Is there anything personality wise with these top three guys that sticks out? Just because I know that that's a really big deal. Certainly when you're picking in the top three, you want to make sure that you got the right person as well as the right skill set coming in.
F
Yeah, I'm still kind of digging on that. So, like, not nothing I've gotten red flaggy yet is what I would tell you on any of these guys. You know, like, Darren's a hyper competitor. Cam is definitely a guy that is a worker and is, you know, you know, has long been like, leader of his team, but is also just like happy to fit into, like, you know, good dude. Caleb Wilson's the guy that, like, is the most fun stuff that I've gotten so far. Like, immensely confident, immensely funny from everyone that I've talked to, like, like really is like a, like energy giver and like joy to be around kind of guy.
D
Okay.
F
Is, you know, very, very smart kid is what I've gotten in a lot of the stuff that I've been told.
E
So, moving on to the next group of prospects, Mike L. Brown Jr. Is currently projected to be the first point guard off the board. How would you compare his game to Kingston Flemings, who is the Houston point guard? That's already rising up draft boards.
F
Yeah. So look like I'm just going to say like blanket as well. There are people who consider Darren a point guard. Like they think Darren's going to be that like kind of on ball operator in the NBA. Right. If you want to consider him like a combo or a two guard. Totally get that. I don't really care about the delineation between positions necessarily. Darren can play both on and off ball. I think that Mikel is more of a. They're very, very different Flemings and Mikel Brown. So Mikel Brown is one of the best intersections of three point shooting. Both off the catch and off the bounce and like passing and vision and like live ball, like live dribble passing ability that I've seen in a while. He is very athletic now. He had like a later growth spurt and now he's like really added some vertical pop and added some first step to where he can just like reject and get by guys and screens, read the court, make high level passing reads like almost like a left hand dominant live dribble passer. Despite being right handed, which is really fun. Like he will throw these crazy angled passes that somehow find their way to teammates. He's just, he has incredible vision. His flaw is like finishing at the rim, consistently getting to the rim. We'll see what that looks like throughout the portion of the ACC season that matters. With Fleming's crazy burst in athleticism, I would guess a little bit shorter than Brown. I don't know about the length right now. I don't have a length like even estimate really on Flemings right now. But Burstier, very comfortable in the mid range. Getting to those shots is his counter, has like a floater, has a really nice mid range pull up jumper. We, you know, in the scouting community we all just kind of want to see a little bit more of where the Flemings thing is going to land. You know, in the game that you know occurred against Syracuse on Monday was very up and down. Had a couple of moments that were very positive. Had some very negative moments defensively. I think both Brown and Flemings are quite poor right now. Like yeah, it's, it's, it's a problem on both ends frankly for both of them. I think that Kelvin Sampson is letting a lot more go than what I may be expected with Kelvin with Flemings and with Cenac as well on the interior. Knowing how talented these guys are and knowing that if he can go through the bumps and the growing pains early that maybe by the time March rolls around that they, they have a higher ceiling than any team in the country if those guys are ready to go. Yeah, interesting players, but Fleming's Flemings is more bursty. Mikel Brown is a little bit more like shooting, passing skill. Not to say that Flemings can't pass. Not to say that, you know, Brown doesn't have burst, but you know, Flemings has like this tendency right now where he'll get in the air to try to jump pass without a plan. Kind of like jump passing is fine when you have like a. Okay, I have a plan. If this defender comes at me, I know where I'm going with the ball. If he doesn't come at me, I know what I'm doing with the ball. With Flemings, I feel like he doesn't have that quite yet.
D
Let's talk about Caleb Wilson, who came into the season with a strong defensive reputation, but a lot of questions about his offense. He's now averaging over 20 points per game at UNC. What about his offensive game has been most surprising so far?
F
Well, it's an interesting offensive game to be honest with you, because it's a situation where he is really thriving in transition against a lot of the bad teams that they've played. And frankly, they have played quite a few bad teams as of the time of this recording. Really the Kansas game is the only game that was, you know, worth evaluating really in terms of the way that I do it. But you know, really getting out and transitioning as the bad teams and enforcing his will athletically there and then against Kansas, what I saw was a guy that really moves well without the ball creates interesting, you know, advantage situations because of that movement, was comfortable hitting shots in the mid range in that game in a way that I think that we as the scouting community wanted to learn more about where his jumper was entering the season. Defensively, it's funny, like the offense has been a little bit better. The defense has been like slightly worse. I don't want to say it's been bad because that would be way too aggressive. He's been like totally fine and solid on defense and like bordering on good. But I think we expected him to be like a genuinely great defender this year and it's been like a little bit less than that. But offensively it's just the athleticism. Like he is able to finish from the two point range at an exceptionally high level. He is drawing fouls at a really prodigious level at this point. I think he's taking like 40 free throws in five games and then he Rebounds the ball, rebounds the hell out of the ball. Chases the offensive glass, you know, really, really good on the defensive glass as well. His passed it well this season. He just kind of hasn't had a hole outside of the willingness to shoot threes to this point. And we will see if teams can kind of figure out, you know, okay, if we can make him a guy that has to shoot threes and we decide to try and slow him down getting to the rim, you know, how effective will he be? But there's a lot of reason for enthusiasm right now, I think, about Caleb Wilson.
E
So LeBaron Filon returned to Alabama this season after withdrawing from last year's NBA draft. What questions could he answer with another year in school? And how has he looked so far? Do you feel like he's already improving his draft stock?
F
Yeah, it was like the last guy to decide to come back. I think he's probably improved himself. I think he's helped himself. Like, he would have gone late first last year. I think that he would definitely go in the top 20 this year. Could very well go in the lottery this year. Wouldn't surprise me by any stretch. His looked really effective and impactful. Was awesome. Against Gonzaga last night, I thought, you know, had 29 points and just kind of got wherever he wanted. Had the seven assists. Turned it over a little bit too much. But that was, you know, really the first game where I thought it was a significant issue. Has been great in three of their four showcase matchups. Like, Alabama is the only team in the country that has played for top 15 teams in the country. And, you know, against St. John's he had 25. Against Illinois, he had 24. Against Gonzaga, he had 29. The Purdue game was really the only one where I thought that it was a struggle, and I thought that Braden Smith, like, really caught him because Braden is just probably, if he's not the best player in college basketball, he's, you know, certainly one of the five. Yeah, I mean, LeBaron, like, teams wanted to see if he can shoot from three. That's a real thing. He's drilling 41% from three right now. They wanted to see what he looked like as more of the primary offensive creator because he played with Mark Sears last year and played a little bit more off the ball consistently. We're seeing more of that where he's able to really create plays for his teammates at a high level, and it's done a really good job of, you know, finding open targets consistently. I think the turnover number continues to be a Bit of a problem for the usage, but yeah, I've generally really liked what I've seen from Filon to this point. I think he's been quite effective and I think that he has been. Essentially he has taken the leap that you really hope to see from a player that decides to return to school after having, you know, potential to go in the first round.
D
Bennett Sturtz stands out from other prospects currently Ben Sturtz, he is in the lottery.
F
The Oklahoma City Thunder. Love child. Bennett starts if there's ever been one.
D
Oh, the love child. What does that mean?
F
Just everything that they want. Like everything that the Oklahoma City Thunder organization tends to value processing shooting, positional size. Like it's.
D
He's like the same age as Kayson Wallace, I guess because he's 22 years old, then I think it'll be 23. Right. Whenever he's ready for the draft process.
F
22 on draft day. But yeah, okay.
D
By the.
F
23. By like.
D
Okay. Okay. Do you think, do you think teams spend a lottery pick on this guy?
F
Well, look like they haven't played anybody yet. And what teams want to learn is, you know, as of the time of this recording, like they play Mississippi tonight. So, like, this conversation might look really stupid in four hours. Right. But what teams want to know about Certs is how does he deal with the physicality, game in, game out in the Big Ten. And when he's. He's like a skinnier kid from what I understand. He's like a low key dude, like very calm, relaxed. Like, I think that this kind of came quickly to him is my read. You know what I mean? Not in a bad way. Just like, you know, I don't know that if he. I don't know if he was expecting last year at Drake to have to make a decision on if he's staying in the NBA draft or if he's like declaring for the NBA draft, you know what I mean?
D
Okay.
F
You know, because he just came up from. With McCollum. Where was McCollum? East northwest Missouri State, if memory serves. One of the Missouri schools. I can't remember. But he came up with McCollum and was just ready to go from the jump and it was stud and was maybe the best decision maker in college basketball last season. He's like a true extension of McCollum out there on the court. I think Ben McCollum is one of the 10 best coaches in the country. You know, I get that he's only been at the D1 level for a year and change now. But everything I've seen in terms of what that guy runs, in terms of his defensive alignments in like all of it, he's just, they're running like NBA caliber actions. And Sturts is the guy that's like orchestrating all of it on the court. Even when he's like getting active rest, he plays like 40 minutes a night. Right. Even when he's getting like active rest by playing off the ball, you see him like orchestrating what's happening on the court because he's just one of those guys who's incredibly smart, incredibly sharp, and knows what he's doing out there at an elite level on the court. And I, you know, am immensely impressed by the fact that, you know, he's an elite catch and shoot guy, can knock down shots off the dribble. Unbelievable passer, playmaker, just very skinny. And we'll see if he can consistently get paint touches and consistently, you know, get into difficult areas in Big Ten play this year.
E
All right, Sam, it's time for lightning round. Super fast question, super fast answers like always. Okay. Each of these.
F
Good luck.
E
Just gonna name, just name one prospect. Okay? One prospect.
F
Yeah.
E
And this is just through the first couple weeks. It's not like projecting out. Who would you say is the most polarizing prospect currently?
F
That's a good question. Maybe Chris Cenac at Houston.
E
I was wondering about him because I was looking at mock drafts and I was like, there's not a lot of centers in this class.
D
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
F
I'd say Senak, do you want an explanation? I know this is the lightning round.
E
Very quickly, very quickly. Lightning explanation.
D
Lightning quick explanations.
F
Developed perimeter game. For a guy that is as big as he is, teams want to see if he can rebound consistently, if he can defend consistently. It's been hit or miss so far at Houston. The good news is that they have a million guys and he's going to have a ton of time to be able to kind of work through all of these things. But, you know, was really good in the syracuse game, had 12 rebounds, and then, you know, in the Oakland game he had four rebounds. In the Ryder game, he had one rebound. Right. So, you know, it's, it, it's just going to be an up and down process with Senec all year.
E
Who'd you say the best shooting prospect is?
F
Um, might be a guy that we haven't seen yet, to be honest, in Braylon Mullins in Connecticut. I mean, just in a. You play, I think averaged like nine and a half threes per game and hit them at like 42%. And we're talking, like, flying off of actions, like sprinting at high speed off of actions and like, drilling shots off of, like, NBA caliber movement. You know, of a guy that has played so far, I don't know, like, Bruce Thornton's like, a pretty incredible shooter. I just don't know if he's, you know, an NBA prospect yet. Well, I'll. I'll answer Mullins, even though we haven't gotten a chance to see him yet.
E
What about best international prospect?
F
So we're not counting the internationals in college here, right?
D
Correct.
F
Because, like, Avdalus, it. Virginia Tech was with Paris area last year, but he's now not international. I guess I'll say Dash Daniels for this. Like, it's not a loaded international class. Yeah, we'll see where Dash falls. Dash just has, like, an NBA skill in terms of. I know that that guy defends at an NBA level. Like, right now. Go back and watch what he did to Jeremiah Fears in the preseason game that the Pelicans played. It was like, honestly, a little bit rude, like, to welcome. To welcome a visitor onto foreign soil here in our beautiful country of Australia. You know, it was. It was a little bit mean and unseemly for somebody trying to welcome a visitor.
E
Who would you say is the best center prospect.
F
The one with the highest upside is Senac.
E
Okay.
F
I think the answer that I would give you that, like, if he comes back healthy, is Jaden Quaintance. Because I think Quaintance is like a genuinely monster defender who can do just about anything that you ask him to do on defense, offense. I have a lot of questions, but defensively, I think Quaintance is, like, genuinely pretty elite. But, you know, he's coming back from injuries. So, like, I named a guy that I just said is the most polarizing player in the class on the previous question and a guy who hasn't played because he's coming back from an ACL injury.
E
Yeah.
F
So what does that tell you about the big class this year?
E
Yeah, I know.
D
Coming back soon. Yes.
F
Sure. Like, he. In the portal process, like, his dad was like, he'll be ready to play for the start of the year.
D
Yeah.
F
He's like, dude, he just had freaking ACL surgery. Like, what are you talking about? He's not going to be ready to play. Yeah, he's practice. He's like, starting to practice here and there. It feels like hopefully he'll be back soon. I don't have a. I haven't talked to the Kentucky staff about when Exactly. He's going to be back, so I'm not going to give a date or anything.
D
Okay.
E
I'm interested in your answer on this. So prospect you're worried will be limited by their situation? I feel like every time we get to the draft time we're talking about players who maybe you didn't like the way they were used in college and maybe that masked some of their true skills. Are there any prospects have jumped out in that way for you so far?
F
It is a good question. I mean I will just say like I think Kansas around Darren Peterson is like quite under talented compared to what Kansas has been. So I do wonder if once Darren gets back he's going to be asked to do so much for this team that like it might lead to some inefficiencies from time to time.
D
Okay.
E
Yeah.
F
But by and large I don't know that this is a class yet where we have seen a whole lot of like, like Yaxel Linda Borg is playing the 3 for Michigan a lot of the time right now. But you know, Yaks is probably just like a borderline first round pick or like, you know, maybe a second round pick. Right. I don't know that any of the guys that like I think are truly awesome prospects are being held by, you know, held back in some way, shape or form.
E
Well, that's great. That's great news.
F
Yeah, we'll see if that changes throughout the year. That could, who knows.
E
It does feel like when I was going through the stat lines for all the top prospects, like man, everyone's playing pretty well right now. I know it's like non conference schedule for a lot of these guys. But speaking of that prospect you most want to see how they perform in conference play. I feel like last year at this time you're talking about Jeremiah Fears because he got that hot start. We're like, let's see what this looks like the Big 12. So anyway, yeah, and he was pretty.
F
Bad in conference play and it didn't matter, he still went seven. Yeah.
E
So anyone that you're like, oh, I just really want to see them against some tough competition.
F
Yeah. I mean like quaintance given the fact that he hasn't played yet is an answer. Senec is definitely an answer here. Just I'm interested to see Senec how he improves from game one to game 30.
E
Yeah.
F
You know what I mean? Like it being non conference player conference play, like what is the growth like throughout the course of the year? Mullins hasn't played that. That'd be another totally Reasonable answer. I'll give you one here. Neoclass Abdullah, I mentioned him a second ago at Virginia Tech. Like they just haven't played a whole lot of interesting teams yet. I think that the Providence team that they played is frankly not awesome, especially on the defensive end. They're 93rd and Ken Palm according to defense. Right now they finally had a game where they allowed under a point per possession, which is great recently. But I thought their defense early on was not very good. You know, I would like to see Abdullah. Abdullah, I'm sorry, play some real teams here. They do play Colorado State, South Carolina, George Mason coming up. You know, reasonable opponents. Not what I would call great opponents necessarily, but then they'll get into ACC play. They play Virginia on December 31st. Like this is a team that has one of the weaker non conference strength of schedules in the country. So how he plays game in, game out against conference play will be really interesting.
E
All right, last question. In the fastest lightning round in podcasting, biggest riser on your personal big board since the start of the season so.
F
Far is definitely Flemings. I would say. I just hadn't seen a lot of Flemings, to be honest. You know, just one of those, you know, we all end up having like random blind spots in these recruiting classes entering. I'd seen like a game or two and, and just like wasn't sure what it was entering the year.
E
That must have been a fun one because he's like, very entertaining to watch.
F
I mean, the burst just immediately like jumped off the screen. It was just like, okay, what else? Yeah, kind of thing. Yeah, because like, he, he didn't have to do anything else in the games that I watched. Like, it was like, oh, he's just way more athletic than everybody. Cool.

E
All right, Sam. Well, thank you for answering all of our draft questions. Is now time to play Andrew versus the Beat. Now this week all the questions are about this year's rookie class. The current rookie class, great. Led by Con Canipple. But there is a. There's a nice little bonus just for Sam Vicini. I want this to be a big points battle. So every question, if you get it right, there's a bonus question attached to it which you can, you can earn an additional point.
D
Oh no.
E
How exciting is that? So Sam, eight questions. Just need a number between one and eight to start us off.
F
Seven.
E
Question number seven. Which rookie has the most shot attempts in the restricted area so far this season?
F
Okay, so. I would guess Cooper. Flag for this answer.
E
That is incorrect. Andrew, you can steal a point.
D
Is it vj?
E
That is also incorrect. Any more guesses? Any more guesses? This is exciting for me. Leading Derek Queen is number two. He's number two. That would have been the bonus question. The number one guy, 89 field goal attempts in the restricted area, Jeremiah Fears.
D
Fears.
E
Wow.
D
Okay. Huh.
E
That's pretty good.
D
That is pretty good.
F
He's played a lot so far, so I buy it.
E
Okay, Andrew, board is yours. Number one question number one. How many rookies have scored 30 points in a game this season? You just have to tell me the number. You don't have to give me the name.
D
Oh my. Okay. Oh my, oh my, oh my.
E
Six. No, Sam.
F
Four.
E
That is correct. Sam. Now for a bonus point. Sam, can you name all four?
D
So.
F
VJ did it in the opener.
E
Yes.
F
Yeah, I believe Queen has done it.
E
Yes.
F
Kh.
E
Yes.
F
And then who was the. Oh, Cedric Coward is the fourth one that I thought.
E
Unfortunately you don't get the bonus point. Oh, unfortunately, Andrew, you don't get the bonus point either. It wasn't your question. You shouldn't have answered right then. The correct answer was Will Richard.
F
That's right. Yeah. He had the crazy three pointer game. Yeah.
D
Wow.
E
Remember that? Remember that?
F
Yeah, man. I thought I would be interested to know how many Coward got at one point because he had the big game.
E
I feel like he got up to like. I mean, I'll tell you right now, but he got up.
D
I think all these guys have had big games.
E
Yeah, that's probably. Is that why you said six?
F
Cooper got to 29?
D
Yeah, it is.
F
I knew that that was his career high.
D
That's exactly why.
E
Okay, Coward got up to 27.
F
Damn.
E
Okay, Sam, board is yours.
F
Number five.
E
Question number five. Among rookies who have played at least 300 minutes, a lot of minutes, there are three players who have more three point makes than two point makes. One of them is concanipple. Who are the other two? And you get one point per correct answer. So these are rookies who have played a lot. At least 300 minutes.
F
300 minutes.
E
They have more three point makes than two point makes. And I don't remember the exact number but it's something like 12 to 15 guys have played 300 minutes. Somewhere around there.
F
Yeah. So the guy we just mentioned is on the borderline there and I'm trying to decide if I think he's played 300 or not. I will say Will Richard, for one of these, I am gonna have to get there at some point.
E
No, Andrew, you have a chance to steal.
F
I'm gonna be so mad if will has played like 285 minutes or something.
D
No, he's.
E
No, he hasn't. He hasn't played that many minutes. Let's see. He has played. Oh, he has played 302 minutes. Yeah, but he has more two point makes than three point makes.
F
Really?
D
Yeah.
E
He is shooting. He is shooting 40% on threes but he has more I appeal. Wow.
F
That's stunning to me.
E
He's shooting 74% on his two pointers.
D
That's wild. What about Jaegor, how are we saying his last name now?
E
Joman.
D
Joman. Sure. I'll say him.
F
You got it. Jobin.
D
Jobin.
E
I'll take Jaeger.
D
Jobin for this one, please.
E
That is correct. That is one of the answers.
D
Yeah.
E
Can you get the other one?
D
Andrew? Oh boy.
F
What about. Is it.
D
Is it Sion? Sion. How do you say his name? Sion. James?
E
Sion.
F
Sion.
E
Sion.
D
That's why I question it.
F
I'm like.
D
I've heard. I've heard it both. I've heard both of these guys names being said all these different ways since the season started. I'm like, I'm so it's confused. Sion.
E
Yeah, Sion. Jaegor Dioman. Well, because if you go to basketball reference, his last name is it. It's DY Is the phonetic spelling D, Y, O M A N D Omen Adrian. That was correct. Which means you get. You get a chance for the bonus question. Yes. Who is the only rookie that has not attempted a three pointer while playing at least 150 minutes? There's only one rookie.
D
He hasn't taken one.
E
Hasn't taken one.
D
That's a Tough question.
E
It's a bonus question. It's. It's not supposed to be easy.
D
I don't know. Is Kalkbrenner taking one?
E
He has taken one. Sorry. It's Musa Sise. Okay, Andrew. Don't. Don't come on me. He's played 150 minutes. All right, Andrew, board is yours.
D
Number two.
E
Question number two. Okay, there. Okay, listen closely, all right? Focus. I don't want to have to repeat this one because it was annoying to write. There are currently three rookies who lead their team in at least one of the five basic counting stats. So total points, rebounds, assists, steals, or blocks. Name two of the rookies.
F
And to be clear, total, not per game.
E
Total, not per game.
F
Okay.
E
Total. Name two of the rookies who lead their team in a basic counting stat.
D
Oh, wow. Okay. Gosh. Okay. Because, like, made threes one. Well, no, no. Okay, never mind.
E
I mean, I. I just gave you the list. I just told you the list. It's rebounds, assists, steals. That's why I said you have to listen, because I didn't want to repeat it.
D
Trying to. I'm telling you, my brain as you're talking, there's just things floating around.
E
Yeah, tell me about it.
D
I just can't.
E
I have to do podcasts with you every week.
D
I can't focus.
E
You black out every time I start speaking.
D
It is absolutely true. It is absolutely true. I don't know, man. Cooper Flag. Rebounds.
E
Okay, you just had to tell me the name. Okay, so Cooper Flag is correct for one point.
D
Okay, can you get.
E
Can you get another one?
D
What about Caulk Printer?
E
That is correct for another point.
F
Now, that would have been my guess.
E
A bonus point if you can name what stat they lead their team in. So Cooper Flag and Ryan Cockburn. You got to get both of the stats correct. What stat do they lead their team in?
F
I mean, he guessed rebounds for Cooper already, right?
D
I did, but I feel like maybe that's wrong with the way that he talked to me.
E
The way he talked to me.
D
Caulk Printer Blocks.
E
Printer blocks. Yes.
D
Coop Cooper. God. Okay, I'll say. I'll say rebounds, but I don't feel good about it.
E
It's incorrect. It was points. The other player. The other player.
F
Derek.
E
Derek Queen.
D
Oh.
E
Derek Queen leads his team in rebounds, assists, and blocks.
D
Yeah.
E
Wowie. Okay, Sam, the board is yours.
D
That is. That is wild with the amount of like that he didn't play in the first few games.
E
I know.
D
That's crazy.
F
Is it? Well, is it?
C
Is it?
E
It is it is. I don't know. Maybe it isn't.
F
Yes.
D
The only opportunity I had to see him in person, I didn't really get to see him. I saw him for like five minutes.
F
Oh, yeah, that's true. Okay, three.
E
Three. There are four first round picks that have played fewer than 10 minutes this season. Of the four, name the one who has scored the most points.
D
Oh, my gosh. So that is just a sick, sick question.
F
So.
E
So I, I narrowed it down. It's a, it's a first round pick. They have scored in the NBA, but they've played fewer than 10 minutes total this season. Yo. Okay, so Samson picking some landmines today. These are not the easy ones.
D
What's the. What was the minute total that you said? Fewer than how many minutes?
E
10.
D
Seriously?
C
Fewer than 10 minutes?
F
That's pretty 10 total, right?
E
Yeah. That's pretty good though. I mean, there's only four out of the first 30 picks that have played fewer than 10 minutes. And one of them is, spoiler alert, Thomas Sorber. So there's. There's one off. Narrow down to three for you. 10 minutes.
F
So I've, I've got one, I think.
E
In my head got one name. I really hope you get this because the bonus question is really good.
F
Is it who is second?
E
No, no, it's. It's way more fun than that.
F
Oh, there's a chance that essen gay top 10 minutes last night in the Bulls game, like for the season. I mean. Cause I think he's played the last two games. I will guess Essen gay.
E
That is a good guess because he was at 6, 6 minutes played as of last night, but he has not scored a point.
F
I didn't remember him scoring was the issue, but yeah.
E
Andrew, any guesses?
F
But 10 is just so few minutes is the problem.
E
It is, it is.
F
So there were guys in my head and I'm like, I think he's played more than 10.
E
It is the problem with the question.
D
I don't feel like Danny Wolfe has like, played at all for the. The Nets. I'll say Danny Wolfe.
E
Andrew. That is correct. It is Danny Wolf. He has two points to his name, which means you get a chance at the bonus point. Andrew.
D
Oh, okay.
F
Ready?
E
You get a bonus point if you can name another player on the Long Island Nets that isn't a current Nets rookie.
F
That's amazing.
E
Here we go. If you can pull this off.
D
No, I don't know.
F
I have no idea.
E
Just throw out a knit. It could be anyone.
D
That'S not on the Nets roster.
E
Although that's not a rookie. Like not Nolan Traore, basically. I didn't want you to say his name. Okay, so not want you to say his name.
D
EJ Liddell.
E
Andrew. That's correct for a bonus point.
D
EJ Liddell.
F
He's on a two way. Yeah, he's.
E
Oh wait, he's on a two way. Oh, but he's not a rookie.
D
He's not a rookie.
F
The way you asked the question like it's, it's about, it's valid.
E
Okay.
D
Okay.
F
Yeah.
E
You could have said. You could have said J. Scrub. You could have.
F
My answer was going to be Tyson etn.
E
Yeah, Tyson etn. Yuri Collins, Hunter Couture. Hunter Couture.
D
If I said Hunter.
F
Can you name where any of these players went to college? Andrew?
D
Not many of them. No. EJ went to Ohio State. I knew he's the only guy I know because I really like.
F
Etienne went to Wichita State.
E
Where'd Jay Scrub go?
F
He was like John A. Logan and was committed to Louisville at one point.
E
What about Terry Roberts?
F
Terry Roberts, Bradley. Is that the Bradley guard?
E
I don't know. I don't have the. That's just the name I had. No, I, I.
D
What about Terry Roberts?
F
Is that. Check, check to see if that's a Bradley guard. If I got that right. 63 guard.
E
What about Hunter Couture, Virginia Tech.
F
Is that right?
E
Terry Roberts. Now isn't that the name of the Terry Roberts he played for Georgia.
F
Did. Was he at Bradley before Georgia?
E
Was he. Oh my gosh, so many questions. Yes, he was transferred to Georgia. He was at Florida Southwestern State, then Bradley.
F
Terrifying that I know that.
D
That is horrifying.
E
I want to take a point away for you.
F
You probably should, honestly.
E
Okay, Andrew, the board is yours. Three questions remain. You have a commanding lead, number four below this, number four concaniple has 63 three pointers through his first 17 games. That's the most ever. There are nine other rookies who hit 40 plus through their first 17 games. I want you to name two.
D
Oh my gosh.
E
So guys who got off to a really hot start as rookies hitting three pointers, not as hot as Khan, cause he hit 63, but still pretty hot.
F
By the way, I have the grossest name that I know is an answer to this.
E
Oh really? Oh, I'm excited. Oh, I, I know what name. You must know. Why did my face just get so white?
D
You're so white.
E
Are you okay?
D
You're gonna throw up.
E
What just happened?
D
I don't know.
E
Oh, there it Is.
D
I don't know. I don't know. So this is past rookies that it got off to hot shooting starts is the question. Okay, you're kind of freaking me out right now.
F
This is like Undercover Brother, Caucasian overload right now. Oh, my gosh.
E
What happened to me?
D
I don't know.
E
That's actually what I really look like. The filter just went away.
D
Oh, man. Gosh. Keegan Murray. I don't know.
E
Keegan Murray. No. Okay, Sam, you can steal two points here.
F
Okay, so I've. The funniest thing is I have the grossest answer and I don't know if I have another one. The grossest answer on this list is definitely Armani Brooks.
E
That is correct.
D
Oh, gosh.
F
I knew I had, like, that one.
D
Yeah, that is something.
F
Yeah, I know. Okay. Oh, God. Is it. Oh, I'm, like, really trying to think through this now. Is Steph just on this list? Like, am I overthinking this?
E
He is not. He is not.
F
Yeah.
E
The other names. Jordan Hawkins, Damian Lillard, Benedict Matheran, Luka Doncic, Larry Markkanen, BRANDON Jennings, Jared McCain, and Kendrick Nunn.
F
Yeah, Lillard was the other name I almost threw out and I just went Curry instead. Because I was like, this is the Easy. Like, it's. Why would I. Why would I go against Curry as a shooter?
D
Right?
F
You know what I mean?
E
Okay, Sam, you have control of the board. You're down by four. Okay, comeback starts now.
F
Six.
E
Concanipple has scored 329 points through 17 NBA games. Only 11 active players scored 300 plus points through their first 17 games of their career. And we're going to name them all. So these are active players who scored 300 plus points through their first 17 games. Sam's going to give me a name then. Andrew's going to give me a name. We're going to go back and forth until one of you stumbles.
F
Okay? LeBron.
E
LeBron. He is not on the list. How is that possible? Lebron James. Let me. Let me Google this guy. See here. LeBron.
D
Let me Google LeBron James.
E
LeBron James. That doesn't seem right. I mean, looking at it, he did score a decent number of points, I gotta say. 298. Oh, my gosh. It was true.
F
That's so gross. Wow.
E
Oh, that sucks. Well, that sucks for you, Sam. That's the only time that won't be the right answer to a question like that.
D
That's crazy.
F
Unbelievable.
E
298. Wow.
D
Really?
F
Well, Andrew.
E
Andrew. Yeah, go ahead.
D
Kevin Durant can You get one.
E
Kevin Durant. Yes, he is one of the names.
F
Gotta be.
E
Yeah, can you get another one?
D
Derrick Rose.
E
Derrick Rose. No other names. Zion Apollo, Benedict. Matheran, Luka Doncic, Victor Wembanyama, Damian Lillard, John Morant, Ben Simmons, Jaleel Okafor, and Chet Homegrown.
F
Yeah. Wemby was the other answer. I was like, immediately thinking, oh, I'm sure this is right. And I was just like, yeah, but there's no way LeBron is wrong.
D
Yeah, that's wild.
E
Okay, Andrew, you get first stab at the last question. Okay. You have a pretty big lead, but it could all go away right now.
D
Really?
E
No. If you. If you add Yong Hansen's total made threes with Jeremiah Fierces total blocks. What number do you get now? You get to. You get to choose who answers first. You can make Sam answer first and then you go higher or lower. Or you can answer first. Sam can go higher.
D
Fears blocks.
E
Plus Young Hanson's threes.
D
I got to see Young Hansen's up so close the other night. He was spectacular.
F
Very, very big.
D
Very, very, very big guy. I don't know.
C
Five.
E
Five. Okay. Sam, would you like to go higher or lower than 5?
F
I will go lower.
E
That is correct. Because it was four. Yong has had four. One. Three. And you're my four.
F
Was going to be my number.
E
Three blocks. Oh, you do get a chance at a bonus point here. It doesn't matter. But just for fun, who is the only rookie to have double digit blocks and double digit three pointers?
D
Ooh.
F
Okay, so I had a name immediately that came to my head. I'm just not sure if it's right.
D
Okay. Yeah.
F
Queen hasn't made threes yet.
D
This feels like a trick question. Oh, they all feel like a trick question, but this one specifically does to me right now.
F
I'm gonna guess Coward.
E
I think Andrew was on the right track. It was a. It was a reverse trick question. It's Cooper Flag.
F
Cooper flag.
D
Yeah. It has to be Coop. I was like, I don't know who else that would be. Yeah, yeah.
F
Honestly, I wasn't totally sure that he'd made double digit threes because he's shooting like 26 from 3 right now.
E
Yeah.
F
So I thought he might be like nine for like 30 or something.
D
Yeah. Yeah. Hey, go listen to the Game Theory podcast with Sam Pacini and our buddy Bryce Simon, who's.
E
And sign up for this. For the substance.
D
Go sign up for the sub stack. Go read the Sam at the Athletic. Anything else that you want to promote before we get out of here.

D
That's so true. Come on guests.
F
You did enough of that for me ahead of time. I didn't have to.
