Welcome to the Athletic NBA Show. I'm Dave Capour here with our intrepid reporter on the ground now in Paris, Mr. Joe Varden. Joe, how you holding up, buddy?
Joe Varden
That's a good question. Vegas, Abu Dhabi, London, Lille, and now Paris. It's the, it's the last leg of the trip, so, you know, we'll find a way to push through in the most beautiful city in the world.
Dave DeFore
Well, hey, listen, from what people have been saying about le, it sounds like it's sneaking up on Paris a little bit. Did you guys all fall in love with this, this town while you were there watching these games?
Joe Varden
You know, as we said, the lat when, when we've talked previously, Leo is great. It's beautiful. It's like Vienna except without the traffic there. You know, the, the people were wonderful. The cafes, the, the buildings, the town square. It's just, it's breathtaking. The only issue was just the team USA play practiced in Paris. So for the, those of us who are covering the USA team exclusively, we just had to take trains every day that they didn't play from LE to Paris and back. So that, that is the taxing part. Otherwise it's great. And now it's amazing, of course, to be in Paris. The athletics hotel is near some really cool stuff. This is a great neighborhood. So it's a wonderful, just a wonderful way to finish up another amazing summer of, of fortunate travel for me.
Dave DeFore
Yeah, I mean this Olympics has just been kind of epic. When you, when you think about some of the photo opportunities that we've seen, I don't know if you caught the men's cycling finish that was right under the Eiffel Tower. It's just, it's going to be an iconic photo that we see for years. So it's kind of very interesting that the basketball, you know, is now moving to Paris with everyone else. So I think we'll get, you know, maybe some more footage of these guys out and about. Let's get to the Games. Because the group play is now over. We're looking ahead to the tournament play. Team usa, they go three and oh, in the group, they secure that overall number one seed by, by beating Puerto Rico the other day, you know, you wrote the story about it. This team, they wanted to go three and oh, I mean, they were very serious about not losing a game, period, at the Olympics. How did you feel about them? Let's start with the Puerto Rico game and then we'll, we'll move to overall. But how did you feel about their performance in the Puerto Rico game? Did you feel like they look sharper now than when they got to the Olympics?
Joe Varden
Yeah, I mean, I, I felt really good about the last two and a half quarters of the Puerto rico game. And LeBron said something interesting. He's right. They hadn't, they haven't exactly gotten off the great starts really in a while, whether it's exhibition or now. Certainly in the Olympics, all three of the Games, they were just okay and maybe even a little poor to start these games. And LeBron said that part of it is because these opponents are so excited to play them. And so they all start with a little extra oomph. Whereas USA's talent and attention on defense, certainly, like they are really playing hard defensively in the Olympics. That seems to take over as we, as we get into the game. So, you know, you had a little rope to work with in the, in the knockout or in the pool play. You can even, you can lose a game certainly if the, if you're the US in advance. And now that is no longer the case. So, you know, they're, they're, I saw today they're like a 27 point favorite against Brazil, something like that. Brazil has seven guys who were NBA players. They're not now, but they were good enough to be in the NBA at some point. So when we talk internationally about one of the advantages that teams have over the American team is how like, together they are and how much they know each other, I think that's overblown. But Puerto Rico is a team that plays together and knows what they're doing. And certainly we saw that in the first half. You know, Jose Alvarado was awesome in the first quarter. And then Tuesday night with Brazil, man, you know those guys. This team is largely the team that, for instance, beat USG Leaguers in a World cup qualifier and is a team that like, has had to kind of play its way into all of these things to get a chance at the Olympics. So, you know, the United States is supposed to win in a blowout, but I. I could see this one being close at least early.
Dave DeFore
And what did you feel about Team USA just overall in group play? Did you. Did you think that the defense at any point was where needs to be to just go ahead and close out the gold medal round?
Joe Varden
Yeah, I. I like the defense, I guess. I like. I like overall where they are. I mean, they won by combined 64 points in three games, which is significant because we've spent all this time talking about how the world is not a bunch of Angolas anymore. This is not the world that the Dream Team was in when they came and just dominated global basketball. These teams can play. So the fact that the United States is winning these games by a lot, that matters. No one has gotten to 100 points on them. I think that matters. All these scores, I think, are in the 80s. And then, you know, they're averaging 103 points a game, and Steph Curry is not shooting well. So, you know, they're. They're doing it without one of the great shooters of all time, like, contributing in that way. So I do like what they're doing. I don't like. The turnovers against Puerto Rico is actually the best they've done there. They only had 11. There's been nights when LeBron has had six turnovers. Some of that is because Joel is having a tough time catching the ball, but some of it is LeBron making silly passes. So. So they got to get rid of that. And they are, even with this dramatically increased size from last summer with. With Embiid, Bam and Davis, they're still vulnerable on the offensive glass. They're still getting beat there. So, you know, Brazil made 17 threes against Japan, and they're. They lead. I think they lead the Olympic tournament in offensive rebounding. So there's a lot to love here. But. But, you know, they. They still, even in this, like, mighty state, have some vulnerabilities.
Dave DeFore
Oh, and offensive rebounding is going to be a weakness for Team USA until it's not, because we're just not used to that style of play.
Joe Varden
Our. Our.
Dave DeFore
Our guys in the NBA, they're not used to the amount of rim pressure that comes from. From crashing glass and international basketball. It's super effective. I mean, and this is the thing that, that beat Team USA in the World cup last year in that game against Lithuania. The. The pressure on the offensive glass. I mean, that's what the international game's all about. And you know, in a way, you're saying that they're a little bit too small on the glass, but I want to go into one of the ways in which being too small is a positive. Joe, you got a story over at the Athletic just posted literally like 3 hours ago. Read it first thing this morning, because it's up my alley talking some hoops. And Team USA has been running what they have dubbed the too small quotes action. Now, this is an inverted sort of pick and roll situation. And warriors fans are probably so upset right now because one of their least favorite things to do is to watch Steph Curry screen for other players. But it is incredibly effective. And Team USA has been maximizing on Steph Curry's ability to screen and the gravity that he creates through this action. And I love that you wrote about it. It's a great story. Tell me about, about this play for them.
Joe Varden
Yeah, I mean, this is something I've wanted to write about for a little while. I saw them do it in practice while in Las Vegas. And Steve Kerr said when this team came together, one of the first things they thought of was, was using Steph that way as a screener. And it's Basically, it's a two man action with LeBron. And there's, there's two things, there's a number of things that can happen, but basically you have this 6, 8 monster who's still as fast as anyone going straight downhill. And if they switch that pick and roll now the player who switches on to LeBron is too small to guard him, and that they've been catching all these teams in that, in that action. And LeBron is shooting like 63% for the, for the summer, which is an outrageous number for him. And it's because he's just getting to the rim and getting to the rim, he's using this action. The other thing that happens is Steph, after he sets the screen, he slips backwards towards the perimeter. And if they, if the defense collapses on LeBron off of the, the, the screen action. Of course, Steph Curry is wide open. LeBron hits him often. He's hit a couple, especially against Puerto Rico. I think he had three threes there, but he's only shooting 33% from three for the tournament or for the, for the summer. So, you know, I think I liked writing it today because we are in the situation where Curry is not giving you statistically what you thought you would get from him and what you're used to getting from him with the warriors, like, and, and obviously you got to allow for some changes there because of who his teammates are, but he's not playing like we're used to. So how is it that he still impacts the game? And that's, that is one of the main ways is that his mere presence scares the Jesus out of these guys. Someone's got to stay with him on the perimeter. And then when they get into this two, two man action with LeBron, it's, it's lethal.
Dave DeFore
You know, let's talk a little bit about Steph, because he has struggled offensively and I've actually been a little bit critical. I, I think that lineup changes, especially in a tournament, you got to be pretty fast on this. You see a world in which, you know, if he's not hitting shots, and I'm not saying that he's not going to play, but he's not hitting shots, maybe he's not out there closing because his defense, while it has been good and an international play, you know, with the ability to camp out in the lane with the bigs, you can, you can funnel, which Steph is, is very good at from his time in Golden State, but he's not a lockdown, one on one guy like Derrick White or Drew Holiday. You see a world in which Steph's minutes start to decrease as the tournament goes on. If he's not able to, you know, hit the big shots that, that they need.
Joe Varden
I do see that. I'm, I'm glad that you brought it up. He's played pretty. He's averaging 21 minutes a game. He and LeBron are playing the most minutes on the team. He only played 18 against Puerto Rico, and I know that was a blowout in the second half, but I, I do see this. And the main reason I see it, I guess there would be two. One is that Durant did not play in the sun in the summer exhibition games. So when the South Sudan and the Germany games were close, Steve still felt he needed that offensive guy out there. So lots of times you saw Curry with Derrick White, but now that you have that scorer in Durant who has the accolades he has as a score, there is a scenario where Steph is not playing as much at the end of a close game if he's still struggling because Steve brought up Derrick White again, Steve said he's not worried about the Steph game and the, you know, hoping that Steph detonates offensively because this team is built on defense and they know how they need to win a FIBA game. And he said that that's why Derrick White is getting the minutes that he's getting, because of his point of attack, defense. And so like the inference there was that there is a possibility that, you know, if it's not working out offensively, that they could even go away from Curry, which is astounding in a way. But, you know, and it's. I know this is something else that we've been talking about and writing about lately, but when, when you get to the end, and now we're at the end, there's three games left. Steve Kerr's only job is to win. And when you put together a team with 11 all stars, somebody who's really, really good is not going to play or not play the minutes that they're used to. Neither you nor I are saying that that's going to happen with Steph or not, but it's possible in a tight game, if he's 1 for 9 again like he was the other night, that you go away from it. If you need to stop the offensive.
Dave DeFore
Firepower, though, when you know Steph Curry can end the game in a three minute stretch, it makes it very difficult to pull him out at any point. So I completely understand and I don't envy being in that position. Let's talk about some of the other guys that have been in and out of the lineup. Of course, controversially. Joel Embiid. I'm gonna start with him. He has not looked good the entire tournament. He starts game one in group play, doesn't play at all in game two, starts game three. What do you think about Embiid after the Puerto Rico game? Does he look like he's in any better shape?
Joe Varden
He does. He does look like he's in better shape. It's been a weird summer for Joel. He clearly was not in shape when he came to camp in Las Vegas and he actually began to play his way into it. And if we're being fair, his last two games of the summer exhibition were, were better. He was sort of ramping up in the, in the right direction. And then he gets sick. Maybe the day of the opening ceremony, maybe being out there on the rain in that boat. On the, on that boat. Like it got to him. He did not practice that Saturday and he plays against Serbia and he stinks like he just. The numbers weren't there. He only played 11 minutes. Jokic looked faster. They rode Bam and Davis a lot in that one. And he also. That's the first game he plays in France where the pro France crowd just booze him mercilessly. Every time he touches the ball, he says he's played through worse, but I don't know that that's true because anything they say to him at Madison Square Garden, you know, is in jester. You know, it's in the process of like NBA rivalry, whatever. This is different. This is a country ex expressing its displeasure in him for, you know, what they felt was a promise to France that he didn't hold up. So all this is happening to Joel and then they feel like they need to get Tatum in there and they're. They go up against South Sudan, who's got a bunch of smaller guys that run really hard and they play a faster game. You're not going to take Derek White's minutes away in that. You're not going to take Drew Holiday's minutes away in that. All the other guards so embiid, I guess, was kind of the logical choice. So you go from getting booed and not playing well and being sick, now you don't play at all. So, you know, he, he looked about like he's looked all summer against Puerto Rico. Like he ended up with 15 points, I think. I think, which is a summer high for him. He played more minutes than he's played. He was like gasping at the end, like when he was talking to us. They, he's on this team, so he doesn't play for France and keeps them away from having three seven footers in the starting lineup. And they need him against bigger teams. So Brazil, they think is a big team. He should. He, you know, hopefully he for usa. He plays well in this one. Then you might see Serbia again, need him there and then you're probably going to get, I mean, you're either going to have Germany or Canada in the final. And if you get Germany, they are huge. And Joel had a big, played a big role against Germany in the friendly. So they're going to need him. You know, they don't need him to be mvp, Joel, but they, they're going to need him here in the next week.
Dave DeFore
And the other guy who got the start against Puerto Rico again after, you know, the DNP in game one and then starting the next two games, Jason Tatum, he's looking pretty good. I mean, the things that he brings to the table, you know, Team USA could use. The issue is that he's just doesn't have the playmaking that they really need in his position. And that's what I think has caused this entire disconnect. It's been made to be about Jason Tatum as a player, and it's more about him as a shooter, I would argue, than anything else.
Joe Varden
Yeah, I think that's true. You know, he played more like the game that they need from him against Puerto Rico. I think he had 10 rebounds go out there and be a rebounder and he was good there. You're right. Like, like they could use him as a spot up shooter. That's not really his game. His first shot as a spot up shooter against South Sudan went off the side of the backboard.
Dave DeFore
Backboard.
Joe Varden
That was a rough look. You know, he was the second leading scorer for this team at the Tokyo Olympics. So this is way, way different for him. And I'm not sure he's, he's like super thrilled with it. I know he understands how this works. You know, it's going to be fascinating to see what happens here over like how Steve divvies up these minutes. You know, they're, they're playing a team, as we've been saying, who's going to crash the glass. And Tatum's coming off a game with 10 rebounds. So can he give them 15 minutes that way? Yes. But then who doesn't play? It's, it's fascinating to see bigger picture.
Dave DeFore
Team USA stuff here. Just the way that this works. And I don't want to say politically, because this isn't politics, this is basketball. This is basketball fit. This is trying to make guys happy also. But first it's about putting the, the best players on the court to win the gold. Looking ahead to 20, 28 Olympics in, in LA, I mean, I think everyone's starting to think, well, who's carrying the torch for this team? I mean, we have LeBron, Captain America on the boat. You know, who is that going to be for us in 28? The old guard isn't going to be there anymore. And I think we all look at Anthony Edwards obviously, but to me, I look at Jason Tatum and I'm worried a little bit, Joe, that this experience is not great for Tatum. And what does that mean four years from now when we need Tatum to kind of lead the team?
Joe Varden
I think that this is an excellent thing to keep watch on. And it's, it is the reason why these lineup, these minutes, decision that Steve's, has, Steve has to make in a vacuum of trying to win this gold. Why they really matter for USA Basketball's big picture. And it's because of this very thing. Like they need Jason Tatum in four years when the Olympics are in Los Angeles and they need Booker, who's played every minute that's been available to him. And then, you know, they need Bam and they need these other guys who are not, you know, in their upper 30s to come back. So it is a balancing act. You know, I asked Tatum about this about. Because he's only in his late 20s. You know, does he. Is. Is the Olympics something he wants to do with Team USA long term? I mean, he easily has two more in him. And he said, I don't know, which I found fascinating. Bam. Jumped at it was like, yes, yes, of course. This is awesome. You don't get to do this very much. Like, most people don't get a chance to do this play for golds. So Jason's answer, I thought was telling. And, you know, I do think that the page will turn pretty quickly after these Olympics are over about the state of American basketball and who is next are Tatum, Booker, Edwards, Adebayo, Halliburton? Is that group good enough to dominate in other Olympics? I don't know. I mean, it's good enough to win. It's good enough to win a gold, but it's also, you know, you could get beat there. So Zion Williamson and John Morant, obviously, for various reasons, have not risen to their potential or their perceived potential. So you're waiting on them. And then, you know, the, the best players in the drafts recently have been, you know, from. From countries outside of America. So, yeah, this is a fascinating topic. You know, you think about Jalen Brunson, but he was on a team that finished fourth at a World Cup. You think about Donovan Mitchell. Okay. You know, smaller players don't necessarily do great at the Olympics or in feeble ball. Look at Brunson, look at Steph, look at Dame Lillard three years ago. Kemba Walker, 2019 World Cup. Like, this stuff is real. It's harder to be small in FIBA basketball. So, you know, it's going to probably be the next big story for international basketball is, is what direction USA goes in after this.
Dave DeFore
Well, one of the big things about the tourney play is the amount of familiarity with the best players on these teams. I mean, the best players in the world are in this tournament. And at every single turn, Team USA is going to have to face NBA level talent, some of the most elite. I mean, if they face Serbia, that's Nicola Jokic, the best player in the world. This first matchup they've got against Brazil, you said seven NBA players. The path to gold is. Is not going to be all that easy. I mean, you know, we can talk about it like it's a cakewalk, and we definitely know we have more talent than every other team. But basketball is a sport anybody can lose. I mean, and when you look at this tourney, Joe, who are the teams that you think have the best shot at knocking off Team usa?
Joe Varden
Well, I think they all have a chance. I think. How do I want to start this? I think when you think about Canada, who they could, they might not, they wouldn't see until a gold medal game. Canada has the second most talent in the world. They have either. They have at least 10 NBA players. It might be 12, I forget. Like they, they. Maybe it's, maybe it's 10. They have 10 NBA players, including one superstar, a second star, and then two really good players, three really good players in RJ Barrett, Dylan Brooks and Lou Dort. You know, I mean, like, they are, obviously they are beyond serviceable NBA players, but they don't have the size and they would play pretty much how the Americans want to play. So you. So for as good as Canada is, I feel like they would have to play exceptional because they're playing the US's game. Beyond that. All right, Serbia is that old adage, you know, that we have in the NFL where you, it's hard to beat a team three times with that third time being in the playoffs. The U.S. has pounded Serbia twice this summer, once to start the Olympics, but a third time it's almost like, you know, you're worried that, that the Serbians had been sandbagging. So you better make sure that the game plan that has worked the first two times is there for the third. Jokic hasn't really gone off yet. And then that would be in the semifinals. And then, yeah, the other possible teams, I mean, you have Greece, who I don't suspect to win twice to get there. So that leaves you Germany, who is the defending World cup champ. They're massive. They have a seven footer in this Voatman guy who doesn't play in the NBA, but he's still a massive skilled player. Daniel Tice plays way above his weight in feeble ball. Dennis Schroeder is, has the potential to erupt as a, as a feeble player. And then, you know, you have the Wagner boys who are very good anyway, and in the FIBA game, they're tremendous. So, you know, the, the US Germany game was fascinating last summer and then was certainly fascinating with the current teams in the friendlies in London. So, yeah, I would say, you know, there's concern for Germany, there's still concern for Serbia and, and then, you know, the Canada game would be one to watch. Just the sheer talent factor. But I hate to be the coach speak here, but you you got to make sure you dot your eyes and cross your T's against Brazil. Don't allow them. Like the two things they do, they hit the glass and they shoot threes. That's your underbelly. Don't allow them. Don't expose yourself against a team that does not have the talent you have.
Dave DeFore
I actually think that this is one of the, one of the takeaways if you're new to watching international basketball. If you go watch South Sudan, you watch team like Brazil, you see, they maybe don't have the talent. So they come up with this style of play that is, is you're able to pull it off in international basketball in a way that you can't in the NBA. It's, it's about pace. You're. You're playing fast, you're crashing the glass, you're shooting every shot that's open. And that high pressure, we saw it in this South Sudan showcase game for Team usa. You can get caught if you slip up. And so a team like Brazil, I mean, more talent than South Sudan, so. Can be scary. Yeah.
Joe Varden
Yeah.
Dave DeFore
Any predictions? Any predictions? They're going to win the gold?
Joe Varden
I think so. I, I mean, I, you know, it like you, you know, we were talking off air last summer, didn't have the talent they had now, but we love the way they were playing. They were nine and oh, getting into knockouts or get, yeah. Getting through the first round of the World cup. They lose three of four. You don't see that coming. So you would pick them. You know, at the outset, this team has way more talent than anybody in the world. LeBron is playing like 2018 LeBron, basically. And Durant has returned. So I think in a really crucial situation, the maturity of LeBron and Durant will probably bail them out. And to your point, with fit, Derrick White fits. And so I think those three guys can really help you. So, yeah, I'm, I'm picking them to win the gold. I, I imagine at least one or two more tense moments. Games closer in the second half than we've seen, but yeah, go gold for the fifth consecutive year.
Dave DeFore
Well, potential gold medal game would be Saturday, but we've got two games before that. Join me and Mo de Kill for post game shows. We're going to do some post game, on the tourney play after the game against Brazil and then after the, the quarterfinal, semifinal. What is it? Semi final, which would be the next game. Yeah, you know, these tournament formats, you know, you got to think about how big they are. Joe, when. When do you get to go home.
Joe Varden
I go home in eight days. Eight days left of a, you know, 43 day trip, I think is what it turns out to be, I think. But yeah, eight more days.
Dave DeFore

Team USA's Performance in Group Play
Securing the Top Seed
Team USA concluded the group stage with an impressive three-and-0 record, clinching the number one seed after a decisive victory against Puerto Rico. Dave DeFore initiates the conversation by highlighting the significance of this achievement:
"Team USA, they go three and oh, in the group, they secure that overall number one seed by, by beating Puerto Rico the other day, you know, you wrote the story about it. This team, they wanted to go three and oh, I mean, they were very serious about not losing a game, period, at the Olympics."

Improved Team Dynamics
Joe Varden responds by emphasizing the team's resilience and improved performance in crucial moments:
"Yeah, I mean, I felt really good about the last two and a half quarters of the Puerto Rico game. ... Otherwise, it's great."

Strategic Strengths and Weaknesses
Defensive Prowess
The hosts commend Team USA's defensive strategies, which have been pivotal in their dominance:
"So, you know, they're, they're, they won by combined 64 points in three games... No one has gotten to 100 points on them."

Offensive Challenges
However, vulnerabilities remain, particularly in offensive rebounding and ball control:
"So, you know, they're getting beat there. ... There's a lot to love here. But they still, even in this, like, mighty state, have some vulnerabilities."

Innovative Playmaking: The “Too Small” Strategy
Maximizing Steph Curry's Impact
A significant focus of the episode is Team USA's unconventional "too small" play, an inverted pick-and-roll tactic leveraging Steph Curry's strengths:
"Team USA has been running what they have dubbed the 'too small' action. ... Steph's mere presence scares the Jesus out of these guys."

Effectiveness Amidst Challenges
Despite Curry's lower shooting percentages, his strategic positioning continues to influence the game positively:
"LeBron is shooting like 63% for the summer, which is an outrageous number for him... Steph is not giving you statistically what you thought you would get from him."

Player Spotlight: Steph Curry and Jason Tatum
Steph Curry's Balancing Act
Dave raises concerns about Curry's offensive struggles and the potential adjustments Steve Kerr might employ:
"If he's not hitting shots... you can see a world in which Steph's minutes start to decrease as the tournament goes on."
[13:59] - Dave DeFore
Joe acknowledges the possibility, highlighting strategic minute management to optimize team performance:
"Steve's only job is to win... somebody who's really, really good is not going to play or not play the minutes that they're used to."
[14:46] - Joe Varden
Jason Tatum's Evolution
Jason Tatum emerges as a crucial asset, despite criticisms of his playmaking abilities:
"He played more like the game that they need from him against Puerto Rico. ... it's fascinating to see bigger picture."

Challenges Ahead: International Competition
Formidable Opponents
The discussion extends to potential threats from other national teams, including Canada, Serbia, and Germany, each bringing unique challenges:
"Canada has the second most talent in the world... Serbia is that old adage... Germany is the defending World Cup champ."
[27:00] - Joe Varden
Strategic Imperatives
Dave emphasizes the need for Team USA to remain vigilant against teams that exploit their offensive rebounding and three-point shooting:
"Don't allow them to hit the glass and they shoot threes. That's your underbelly."
