Good morning and welcome to the NBA Daily for July 3rd, 2026. I'm Dave Defour here with Sam Amick. Coming up, I'm going to pick Sam's brain on all the deals we've seen so far in free agency. Like what the heck happened with Jaylen Brown? Good morning, everybody. What is up, Sam? How's it going? Sam Amicking, our national NBA insider at the Athletic.
C
What's good?
D
Tell me everything you know, man. Good to see you. Listen, it's been A pretty fun and eventful time I think since the NBA Finals. Like this has been a pretty busy post Finals. You know, draft was, was kind of crazy. We got the Giannis trade, we got John Morant traded and then you know, a couple days ago, Jalen Brown Shock trademark legitimately shocking because it seems like he was a salary dump in a lot of ways. So I'm assuming that you've had a crazy summer so far. What's the, is this Jalen Brown thing just like occupying all your life right now?
E
No, I mean it's, it's, you know, spread across the, the landscape. Certainly since I saw you in person during the finals, it feels like a lifetime ago. I keep seeing these graphics that people put out of these all star level players in their new jerseys and just kind of shaking my head at, you know, the craziness that has been this off season. The Jalen move to Philly certainly didn't see it coming. The Sixers had not been one of the teams that were even bandied about. Even though we knew that Jalen's market was not great at all for the Celtics. You know, nobody foresaw or reported or speculated about a, a Paul George, you know, and picks deal that really, I mean the Celtics understandably just getting widely panned for that trade. We're going to get into that. But yeah, man, I mean, you know, all stars flying around left and right and changing jerseys. We still got LeBron to track, figure out where the old man's going to go. So lots going on.
D
You know, we've been thinking free agency is dead the last couple years. Maybe with the lottery reform and the second apron. It's not really about who gets signed anymore, but it's about this is like really become a secondary trade deadline in a lot of ways. That July 6, you know, before we roll over to the, to the next year. Teams ducking the tax, teams deciding to move on from players like a lamello Ball gets traded because the Hornets don't want to pay that next contract. I think it's probably a similar situation here with Jaylen Brown. When you're asking around, you know, around the league, around, you know, our colleagues at the Athletic. I mean, what are you hearing about this deal and, and what happened with Jaylen Brown and the Celtics? Is it something behind the scenes or is this just time to. Time to get out of the Jalen Brown business?
E
I mean, to me, Dave, there's, there's two tracks that we can have this conversation on. There's like the Celtics specific stuff in terms of interpersonal dynamics, relationship stuff. To be honest, the, the stuff I enjoy reporting on in terms of understanding people's actions and their motives and why things happen. The other track is good old fashioned business and I'm going to check that box first real quick. You and I were just talking off air about this a little bit and the economics of the situation are such Jaylen Brown is on track to be the seventh highest paid player in the NBA next season. And I'm cheating and looking at the screen to my left, $57 million next year, $61 million the year after that, roughly $65 million in the 2829 season. In today's league where the second apron and I hate to like endorse, you know, what James Dolan has been saying out there after the Knicks won the championship. It is brutal the way that the league operates now because it's not just about the exorbitant cost of the financial penalties. It's about losing all of the roster building levers that you are normally used to having if you go into the second apron. So if you're going to take a guy on like Jalen or if you're going to have two of them like the Celtics did, you better really believe in that guy's talent. And that is where, as it relates to Jalen, the market, there was such a massive gap between what his contract looks like and what, how the league values him. And I know, you know, understandably he rages kind of when he hears that, doesn't agree with it, uses it as fuel as well he should. But that is also the reality. Not that there's a monolith here, opinions vary, but you can't really find anybody who looks at that contract and says, yep, that's about right. 7th highest paid player in the league. So that suppresses the market big time. The Boston specific stuff is that they chase Giannis Antetokounmpo quietly at the February trade deadline, revisit it in the summer like so many other teams. And I had a GM tell me today that he thinks, you know, one thing that, that really tripped them up in the process was they had never truly shopped Jalen outside of the Yanis situation. And as a result they were blindsided in his opinion, by the market and the lack thereof. Oh, and that's where you look around and, and not only was the market not great, but you know, then you're losing leverage by the day potentially. You know, the reporting is that he didn't ask for a trade, for example, but but, but the, you know, but there was some tension there. Well, what if he did right going forward? Well, now you lose even more leverage. Now the market gets even worse. So to try to put myself in Brad Stevens shoes and that front office, you know, you're, you're looking at this Philly deal. I mean, if we talk about my opinion, like so many others, I just cannot believe that they did this trade with Philly. Like, it's Philly. Yeah, I know I'm the west coast dude, but I understand that rivalry. I understand the history between those two teams. You just lost to them in the playoffs. It's incredible. It's like, let me, you know, let me hand, you know, package a guy who, yes, he doesn't, you know, meet his contract, but he's a hell of a player. And I still can't believe it was Philly.
F
I.
D
Listen, as far as meeting the contract, I just don't, I think we, we existed in this world for a while where the number two guy also got a big max, and that's clearly done. And I, I, as this, this sort of salaries all start to reset, it's one thing. But this guy was a finals mvp, Conference finals MVP recently. He did have a great season last year. You know, I, I think you throw the analytics out the window a little bit when you're talking about the year that he had. He was so far and away the, the number one option on that team. And I, I think the defenses just, they approach you differently and so efficiency is always going to go down when you have a volume increase. But I, I think that, you know, they also, they made a rival better.
E
Right.
D
Immediately. And I don't understand. Let's say you still wind up making this trade. Let's say you, you value Paul George and your system higher for some reason than Jalen Brown. Okay, let's, we'll say all that. Why not do this in August, September? Why did you do it now? Like, it seems to me like you could have spent the summer checking things out, trying to mend fences with Jalen Brown and, and maybe run it back because you made your team worse and you didn't really get much for it. But also there is a failure there in, in not understanding the value of your own guys. Like that is actually, that's why teams have a pro personnel scouting department. Part of your job is to get intel on your own guys from other teams.
E
Right? No, I mean, that all lands, I think, to your last question, though, about why not do it in August and July? I know, I'M Or I'm sorry, September. I know I'm repeating myself, but, you know, the sense I got was that it might have just gotten worse, you know, and, yeah, I mean, listen, Brad's a smart guy. They have very smart people in that front office. I trust that they know that the Sixers, for whatever reason, weren't going to do this down the road or, and this is where, you know, still trying to get clarity is if you look at the personal dynamic side, some of this stuff is common sense. Dave, put yourself in Jalen's shoes. You. You have been considered the 1A to Jason Tatums one for your whole career. At times, you were not even given 1A status. It was 1 2. Then you win a championship, your finals MVP, the conversation still has Tatum as 1 and you as 1A. Tatum gets hurt. You carry legitimately. I know they're a deep team, but carry the Celtics to a wonderful regular season that nobody really saw coming. You know, Joe Missoula, coach of the year, things like that. Everybody's getting their flowers. You get second team, all NBA again, sixth in MVP voting. It's not like the media disrespected him. But. But on the league, you know, all those things happen. And your employers who have floated you in trade discussions in the past, most famously with Kevin Durant a couple years back, do it again with Giannis. And so in terms of the urgency to do. Makes perfect sense to me that even absent a trade request or at least a spoken one, the vibe was clearly not good. I mean, the relationship stuff was clearly strained. That's why Boston tried to keep the Giannis pursuit quiet. And that's why I think ultimately we saw it land where it did.
D
Yeah, I mean, listen, we're going to probably be revisiting the almost Giannis trade for Boston for a while, but it feels pretty crazy to. To look at the Celtics roster and you were in the mix for Giannis. You didn't want to send out some young guys that, you know, like, frankly, like, how good are they even going to be? We don't know. And you wind up with Paul George and no Jalen Brown. I mean, that's a failure of a. Of an off season right there, in my opinion. And by the way, Paul George might be totally fine for them. You know, they may be able to. To cover for the places where he's not still Paul George. He was obviously really good as a role player when he was healthy with the Sixers last year. I mean, you know, he can shoot Dave.
E
And how's this for irony to tie a bow on that part of the conversation, you know, and this is Bill Simmons reporting, but Bill put out there today, you know, known Celtics adjacent media member that the Celtics had balked at the prospect of giving Giannis a third year on his extension in, in that situation. And, and just, you know, trusting Bill's reporting have not confirmed that independently. But I only bring that up because of the financial conversation, like how, you know, I can hear Alanis Morris said in the background. Isn't that ironic that you.
D
Right.
E
One of the reasons you potentially and reportedly didn't get the Giannis deal done is for these similar economic concerns that compelled the rest of the NBA to not want to pursue the guy that you were trying to trade. So they're no different than any team. But the problem there was once you opened this Jaylen Brown door in the Giannis discussion, you kind of needed to land the plane. And the inability to land that plane for whatever reasons that, you know, came into play put them in a really compromised spot.
D
Yeah. And now they've got in Paul George, what Danny Larue is called the fourth worst contract in the NBA. So, yeah, life comes at you fast.
E
What's, what's 1, 2 and 3?
D
Yeah, I have to, I'll have to dig that up. Guys, we're going to take a quick break and when we come back, I'm going to pick Sam's brain about the Lakers and what the heck they're doing with Walker Kessler.

D
The Lakers had a pretty splashy day two of free agency. Hot on the heels of the announcement that LeBron Braun was leaving. They make a huge splash and they they engineer assigning trade to get Walker Kessler four years, $130 million contract. They send two first round picks in 31 and 33 to Utah. Two pick swaps in 28 and 30. And then they signed a bunch of guys. They signed Sandro Mahmoud kelishvili to a four year $52 million deal. Colin Sexton, two years, 19 million. Quenton Grimes, four years, 60. And now the powder is all gone. Not just, I mean they kept their powder dry for this summer and it is all gone. Sam, if this team doesn't work out, I am very nervous for how the Lakers pivot. What do you think about getting Walker Kessler and adding him to Austin Reeves and Luka Doncic?
E
Well, it's the theme of this pod, Dave is us trying to reconcile basketball talent and basketball fitness with cash. You know what I mean? So in that respect, the, the Lakers are the, you know, the, the anti Celtics and then all these other teams that, that had sticker shock and didn't want to do certain moves, they have just gone all in on a guy in Walker Kessler who while very talented and while fit wise and this matters a great deal. Luka Doncic, you know, known to be a massive advocate of this move and somebody who saw Walker as a perfect fit and a, you know, a lob threat and a rim protector and all those things. I get all that, but it's a huge investment in a guy who was hurt for a lot of last year. Now in his defense, some of the games he didn't play were because the Jazz were tanking. And I don't think he enjoyed, you know, being shelved in that way. But you're right, between that move and all the other moves they made, they are all in. This is a very expensive team. That, and this is admittedly like an overly simplistic framing, but I saw a tweet yesterday that struck me and hopefully I don't mess it up. But it was something to the effect of, you know, that the Lakers had just spent a quarter billion dollars on five guys who had not made an all star team. And you know, so fit is going to matter. And their scouting is and has been for a couple of years that Walker Kessler is the type of five that they needed. I am from a negotiation business standpoint and this is the Lakers and Walker's camp at CAA with, with Aaron Mintz leading the way. I am admittedly impressed that, that they got the deal done. And I'm just talking about their ability to kind of finally get Utah to crack now. You know, because Utah had signaled that they were going to match everything, they were going to not cooperate and signing trades. They were not going to trade this dude. But you know, the Lakers with those two firsts they've been holding on to for a while, they, they get this thing done and we'll see. I mean, you and I don't have skin in the game. It'll be fun to see if with no consequence whether or not it works, but lots of pressure in that situation Now.
D
Now there was talk that they were also in on Jalen Duran who right now still, still a restricted free agent. He hasn't, he hasn't re signed with the Pistons or sign an offer sheet or anything as we record this. How do they, how did they kind of make the choice? Or is this, was this their number one option was Walker Kessler and Jalen Duran was just, hey, if this doesn't work out, we can always throw a big contract at, at him?
E
Yeah, I mean they're, you know, promise might be strong but, but you know, their, their messaging to Luca last year was that we're going to get you an elite five. And you know, and of course, as you probably saw, Dave, Anthony Davis was loving this whole conversation because you know, on social media he, he puts up a bunch of laughing emojis saying that they finally get a five. Basically saying, finally get a five when I'm gone. Because he had asked for one for years when he was with the Lakers, but they told Luka, we're going to get you a five. My sense of it, and having covered that Jalen Duran situation really closely was that it appears that Rob Pelinka and their group were on two tracks. Walker clearly was the top option. They got that deal done simultaneously. They had met with Jalen, had a really good meeting. The messaging coming out of that for him was that they saw him as a max level player. Now that doesn't mean they were prepared to put that money on the table. That part was to be determined. They had wanted to meet with him the next day as well. And then by the next morning. And it goes back to the Jazz here. That's when obviously the trade discussions had been continuing between both sides and Utah does the deal. I even think again, just basketball wise, depending on how this Lakers group performs next year. I think there's a what if scenario that I'm always going to think about with Jalen because the type of money they commit to a guy in Walker whose resume at this stage pales in comparison to what Jalen Duran did last year. Third team, all NBA. Obviously struggled big time in the playoffs, but you know, he was a massive part of a 60 win team. You know, I wonder how he would have fit with the Lakers, you know, giving Luca another all NBA type talent instead of going for what they did, which is the fit and maybe, maybe it works. But man, lots of cash, lots of, you know, lots of pressure here again and we'll see if it works.
D
Let's touch on Duran real quick. I mean, what's, what's the latest with him? I know that we, we've been hearing that the Pistons plan to match any offer and are not interested in a sign and trade, but doesn't seem like anything's happening at the moment.
E
Yeah, I mean nothing new today. They, I do think they're in a bit of a pinch in terms of scenarios and we'll see if anything else emerges. But the Kings thing that, you know, one of the strategies died on the vine pretty quickly which was going to be demonic Sabonis going to the Pistons potentially in a sign of trade and the thinking being that that if the Pistons didn't want to pay the full freight for Jaylen, the Kings would be willing to. And, and they are absolutely huge fans of Jalen and would not lose any sleep over paying him. The type of contract that we have been talking about. These massive. They, they need a guy and they just got Darius Aoff, he's going to be on a rookie deal. They, you know, they're trying to get off their old money and but the, you know, the, the part of that whole premise that that did not last very long was that the Pistons would have interest in Sabonis and they don't. So that's a huge obstacle. Even beyond that, they have continued to signal that they have no interest in cooperating and signing trades. And so coming out of Jalen's meeting with the Kings, the messaging was that they were going to keep looking at sign and trade scenarios. But honestly, going forward and we'll see where it develops, it's on Jalen and it's on the Pistons to see where this goes. I mean, so far there is no indication that Jalen is truly considering signing the qualifying offer. As you know, that's the only way to, to really get, not only get on the pathway to unrestricted free agency, but if the team is then fearful enough of losing you for nothing, then before then, then maybe I do think, for example, in the Walker situation that was a very real threat was him signing in Utah. And so then you're faced with the prospect of do we want to spend a whole year worrying about losing this guy for nothing or take this bag, so to speak, that this other team is willing to give us in terms of draft assets. So we'll see how Jalen plays it. He, you know, the chance certainly remains that Detroit ups its offer and they get a deal done and he goes back. But we'll see.
D
Pistons haven't had a good summer so far, so they better not lose Jalen Duran. Yeah, it is. It has been like they're taking a step back at a time where the east is starting to actually get pretty deep. I don't know if I mean this is a kind of flying under the radar a little bit, but the east is no longer a laughing stock. No, it is going to be pretty brutal next season. And I mean The Pistons won 60 games last year. I don't see that happening this year. I think they'll be lucky to be 50 because of just teams are going to be more competitive. Some of that's lottery reform and guys just kind of, you know, dispersing around the league, but also been some artillery going.
E
No, the east is loaded, man. And I was actually listening to friend and colleagues Zach Lowe's paw the other day and Zach made a good point. You got eight teams that think they're top six in the east, you know, like if not more so. I mean, I agree that you can
D
get to 11 that that think they have a shot at the six seed, you know, at least I think if you really talk about it, you know, like we didn't even talk about the Charlotte Hornets. Like they maybe didn't take as big of a step back as a lot of people are thinking. Moving on from Will Mellow. Kobe White can do some of that stuff. I think adding Nas Reed is going to be really big for them. You know, I know you're a big fan of Nas Reed.
E
He's Just throwing that love for me, aren't you, buddy? Look at you.
D
What an assist, man.
E
I've been begging Dave to, to let me, you know, share this joke on the pod. It's more for the video audience, but behind me you see the elliptical. I have this habit of using the team issued towels from like swag for awards contests that, that they send our way. You know, we don't ask for these things, they just show up every once in a while. But talk about the NBA and life coming at you fast. This is the featured famous Nasri Timberwolves towel. And I mean, now it's a collector's item, so I better watch. Really is in. Hold on to it. But yeah, I mean, that, that trade with Minnesota and Charlotte and obviously Nas going to the Hornets, it's just part of this explosive summer that honestly, it's going to make for a pretty fun season. Like I'm dying to see.
D
I think so.
E
And Lamelo together in Minnesota, they're trying to get bigger out there and work on the front court and we'll see where they get. But like that's, you know, that's the Gen Z team right there. I mean, I got kids that, that think Lamelo and Ant are like the top two players in the NBA, so that'll be fun.
D
Oh yeah, the YouTube algorithm loves those guys. I can't wait. We're gonna have, we're gonna have a big blow up on YouTube next season talking about those guys. Hey, look, before, before we go from here, I gotta ask you about LeBron. Not so much. I'll just put it like this. Not so much. Where do you think he's going? Okay. Cause the realistic options to me aren't as much fun. I feel confident, yeah, he's not going to Memphis. I don't think he's going to go to Boston. Yeah, but where's the. Where's the most fun place or the most competitive place that you could realistically see him going?
E
I mean, if you just. If you take away narratives meaning like
D
ties to the, like the Cleveland. Right?
E
Yeah, I mean, honestly. Yeah, like I. Let's put him in Denver. You know, I wrote a little bit about it yesterday because Denver I'd confirmed and it was first reported by Bennett Durando of the Denver Post that the Nuggets have registered interests and LeBron, but just basketball wise, he is a huge fan of Joker, has a lot of respect for him. It's funny. I mean, this sounds silly, but it's true. Like, he's a 41 year old who now loves golf. So as I wrote this thing, I was cracking up and it was a little tongue in cheek, but I was trying to figure out, because I'm not a golfer, I was like, all right, like, how is Denver's quality of golf? And I look it up and hey, golf.com had Colorado was top 10 in the country. Like, that's, you know, that's a, they
D
get all that sunshine year round.
E
Well, and as others have pointed out, the, the altitude means your, your drives go a whole lot farther. So LeBron feel like he's a stud because he's kind of new to this whole golf thing, but basketball wise, it would be fun to see if he could, you know, help them inch closer back to San Antonio and okc. Because, you know, as, you know, going into last year's playoffs, like, we thought Denver was still right there and they. Right, they didn't get the job done. So Denver comes to mind. But I do think all the other stuff does matter, you know, with Cleveland, Golden State, Miami being widely seen as the top three. Just right now as we sit here, you know, it could Change the Cavs 1. It just feels like you got, we got to keep our eye on that one. I don't know if he's waiting to see what other moves they make to maybe further entice him, but in terms of the combination of tying a bow on your career, where you started a team again, not just LeBron, elite players really like to go places where, if it works, they get perceived as the hero, you know what I mean? And the Cavs, you know, they, they fell on their face in the playoffs last year, and if he was able to find a way to, to pick them up and get him farther or even get the job done and win a championship, that would be a hell of a. A back end to his career, but with a capital B, there's, you know, nobody. Like, I don't know where Vegas would have the cap, excuse me, the Cavs right now as title contenders. I mean, they'd be top 10, I think, but probably on the lower half of the top 10. So, yeah, I think it's going to be sometime, probably a next week thing for LeBron at the earliest he's going to take his time and technically speaking, he is considering all 30 teams. I know that sounds crazy.
D
Yeah.
E
But he's told his agent, Rich Paul, basically go on a fact finding mission, just go collect all the data, collect all their proposals, all the roles, and, and have those conversations, and then they will get in a room at some point and. And break it all down. So an interesting process that I think you and I, we could be talking about this when I see you in Vegas for summer league. I mean, who knows if a drag.
D
Oh, yeah, yeah. There's a very good chance that this all breaks next week. I mean, listen, he's the last domino. Norm Powell signed. Tobias Harris signed again. Week, week, free agent class, when we come down to it. But LeBron, I don't know. The more fun spots to me, I love Denver. I think Minnesota would be a lot of fun, but it's feeling more and more like it's going to be. I think Cleveland the golf, man, the
E
golf's killing Minnesota's chances. That's, you know, like just.
D
You can Cleveland. Cleveland too, right? Like, do they have indoor golf in Cleveland? I don't know. It didn't feel like that kind of place.
E
Allegedly. That's true. Yeah.

In this episode, Dave DuFour sits down with The Athletic's national NBA insider Sam Amick to dissect a bombshell offseason: the Boston Celtics’ shocking decision to trade Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers. The pair dive deep into the business and relationship dynamics behind the move, Boston’s failed pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, the state of NBA free agency, and reverberations elsewhere — Lakers’ splashy trades, Jalen Duren’s uncertain status in Detroit, and the wild LeBron James rumor mill.
[02:30] Major Shock:
Both hosts express surprise at the Celtics offloading Jaylen Brown, especially to a conference rival.
"A couple days ago, Jaylen Brown shock trademark legitimately shocking because it seems like he was a salary dump in a lot of ways..." (Dave, 02:30)
[03:07] Market Dynamics & Financials:
"...the economics of the situation are such Jaylen Brown is on track to be the seventh highest paid player in the NBA next season..." (Sam, 04:56)
[05:40] Boston’s Trade Strategy & Market Misread:
"...they had never truly shopped Jalen outside of the Giannis situation. And as a result, they were blindsided in [a GM's] opinion, by the market and the lack thereof..." (Sam, 05:20)
[08:24] Why Trade with Philly, and Why Now?
"I just cannot believe that they did this trade with Philly... It's Philly!" (Sam, 08:08)
"The vibe was clearly not good. I mean, the relationship stuff was clearly strained. That's why Boston tried to keep the Giannis pursuit quiet. And that's why I think ultimately we saw it land where it did." (Sam, 09:52 & 11:52)
[09:10] Could They Have Waited?
Dave questions Boston’s urgency, suggesting they could've tried to mend fences or shopped longer:
"Why did you do it now?... You made your team worse and you didn't really get much for it." (Dave, 09:10)
[12:38] Irony & Offseason Regrets
"The Celtics had balked at the prospect of giving Giannis a third year on his extension..." (Sam, 12:38)
[15:56] Splashy Moves Post-LeBron:
"...they are all in. This is a very expensive team." (Sam, 16:54)
[16:54] Kessler’s Fit and Risk:
"They just spent a quarter billion dollars on five guys who had not made an All-Star team." (Unnamed tweet via Sam, 16:54)
[19:32] They Considered Jalen Duren Too:
Walker Kessler was the top target, but Jalen Duren was also in consideration. Duren’s superior resume noted but fit over star power ultimately won out.
"The east is no longer a laughing stock. No, it is going to be pretty brutal next season." (Dave, 23:55)
"Let's put him in Denver.... just basketball wise, he is a huge fan of Joker, has a lot of respect for him." (Sam, 27:03)
"If you're going to take a guy on like Jalen or if you're going to have two of them like the Celtics did, you better really believe in that guy's talent. And that is where, as it relates to Jalen, the market, there was such a massive gap between what his contract looks like and how the league values him." (04:56)
"Put yourself in Jalen's shoes... at times, you were not even given 1A status... then you win a championship, your finals MVP, the conversation still has Tatum as 1 and you as 1A." (Sam, 10:26)
"You end up with Paul George and no Jaylen Brown. I mean, that's a failure of an offseason right there, in my opinion." (11:52)
"Lakers had just spent a quarter billion dollars on five guys who had not made an all-star team." (17:56)
"He's told his agent, Rich Paul, basically go on a fact finding mission... and then they will get in a room at some point and break it all down. So, an interesting process..." (Sam, 29:47)
