I’m sharing a recent interview I did on Ashley Dealye’s podcast because the original release sparked so many thoughtful comments and questions that I wanted to make it available to my own community. In this wide-ranging conversation, we challenge some of the conventional assumptions about eye care and explore a different way of understanding vision. We discuss: • Why eyesight and vision are not the same thing • The biggest misconceptions about traditional eye care • My own journey from severe nearsightedness to naturally improving my vision. And much more!

Can your eyesight actually improve? In this fascinating conversation, Dr. Sam Berne shares why vision is about far more than reading the eye chart. Drawing on over 45 years of clinical experience, he explains the difference between eyesight and vision, how the brain and body influence perception, and why stress, posture, movement, nutrition, trauma, and the nervous system all play a role in how we see. Topics include: • The difference between traditional and holistic eye care • Dr. Sam’s personal journey from severe nearsightedness to 20/20 vision • Why glasses may not always address the underlying cause of blurry vision • Vision therapy and neuroplasticity • Birth, development, and how vision begins in infancy • The connection between posture, movement, and eyesight • Craniosacral therapy and visual function • Nutrition, inflammation, liver health, and eye wellness • Cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and natural strategies that may support healthy vision* • Why vision is truly a whole-body process Whether you’re experiencing blurry vision, eye strain, reading difficulties, or simply want to understand how perception shapes your experience of the world, this conversation offers a refreshing perspective on vision and human potential. About Dr. Sam Berne Dr. Sam Berne is a holistic optometrist, filmmaker, storyteller, and creator of Perceptual Ecology™, an approach that explores the relationship between vision, posture, movement, nervous system regulation, and awareness. What if an eyeglass prescription is more than an optical measurement? In this episode, Dr. Sam Berne explores the deeper meaning behind myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism through the lens of the nervous system. Learn why nearsightedness often reflects patterns of contraction, fear, and hypervigilance, why farsightedness may represent a different adaptive strategy, and how posture, primitive reflexes, trauma, and visual development are woven together. Rather than seeing vision problems as isolated eye conditions, discover how they can become valuable clues about the body’s relationship to safety, regulation, and perception. Vision isn’t just about seeing clearly. It’s about how we experience the world.

Could unresolved trauma be affecting the way you see? In this episode, Dr. Sam Berne shares a remarkable case of a woman whose headaches, eye strain, and poor night vision weren’t solved by multiple AI-generated eye exams. The missing piece wasn’t sharper eyesight—it was understanding how trauma had changed her visual orientation. Discover: Why vision is more than 20/20 eyesight How trauma can narrow peripheral vision The surprising role of yoked prisms Why regulating the nervous system changes perception Where AI helps—and where it falls short This conversation explores the intersection of neuroscience, vision, posture, and perception. Can your vision improve through neuroplasticity? In this podcast episode, Dr. Sam Berne explores the connection between neuroplasticity, the nervous system, and visual function. Drawing from his recent Vision Sanctuary Retreat, he explains how the brain and visual system stay adaptable throughout life and how certain experiences can stimulate change. Topics include: • Neuroplasticity • The brain, eyes, and nervous system • Attention, focus, and visual performance • Fight, flight, freeze, and sensory processing • Interoception and self-awareness • Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory and vision • Clinical experiences with brain injury and special needs patients • Vision as adaptation and learning If you’ve ever wondered whether the brain and visual system can change, this episode offers an introduction to neuroplasticity and its practical implications. In this episode, Dr. Sam Berne explores the timeless story of The Odyssey as a metaphor for embodiment and the journey back to ourselves. Drawing parallels between Odysseus’ temptations and today’s digital distractions, Sam reflects on why vision, perception, and direct experience matter more than ever in an age of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and constant stimulation. The second half of the episode features a live lecture on iridology—an observational practice that examines patterns, colors, and markings in the iris to reveal constitutional tendencies related to metabolism, digestion, stress resilience, personality traits, and overall health. Sam discusses: The three primary iris constitutions How the iris reflects inherited strengths and vulnerabilities Connections between eye patterns, digestion, liver health, lymphatic function, and nervous system regulation Nutritional and lifestyle strategies to support vitality Why individualized health approaches matter more than one-size-fits-all recommendations Whether you’re interested in natural health, embodiment, vision, or understanding yourself more deeply through the eyes, this episode offers a unique perspective on the relationship between perception and well-being. How Perception Can Be Altered Through Orientation and Regulation Today I am revisiting one of the presentations from the Perceptual Ecology Series. We will explore the relationship between aromatherapy, the respiratory system, immune resilience, and perception. When most people think of essential oils, they think of pleasant scents, relaxation, or natural remedies. However, from a Perceptual Ecology perspective, aromatherapy offers something deeper. The sense of smell is one of the fastest pathways into the nervous system. Unlike vision, hearing, or touch, smell bypasses many of the brain’s filtering systems and travels directly to areas associated with memory, emotion, survival, and regulation. This means that aroma has the potential to influence how we orient, how we regulate, and ultimately how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Perception is not fixed. The way we experience ourselves and our environment is influenced by countless factors, including breathing, sensory input, stress levels, movement, and nervous system regulation. Aromatherapy offers a simple yet powerful way to enhance mental clarity, support emotional balance, and help manage stress by directly engaging our sensory and regulatory systems. By supporting orientation and regulation, essential oils may help us gain greater clarity, emotional resilience, presence in daily life, and a stronger sense of connection to ourselves and others. Thank you for joining me for Lecture 3. Thank you for being here. Enjoy the show

In this episode, Dr. Sam Berne explores the concept of Perceptual Ecology — a framework that views vision as an integrated function of the brain, nervous system, movement, posture, breath, balance, and emotional regulation. Through patient stories and personal experiences, Dr. Berne explains how symptoms like dizziness, visual overwhelm, headaches, anxiety, and balance problems may arise from disorganization in the nervous system rather than isolated eye dysfunction. This conversation dives into: • Functional vision • Peripheral awareness • Vestibular regulation • Somatic movement • Nervous system safety • Feldenkrais principles • Embodied perception • Orientation and healing A powerful discussion for anyone interested in holistic vision, nervous system health, neuroplasticity, and embodied healing. 🌐 Learn more at: www.DrSamBerne.com #PerceptualEcology #FunctionalVision #SomaticHealing #DrSamBerne #Embodiment #VestibularSystem #PeripheralVision #HolisticHealth #Neuroplasticity #MindBodyConnection
