is to look back on your teenage years or your high school years or whatever years it was when she had her first boyfriend with rose colored glasses. You know, everything was better back then because you're looking back on it. And I think also because you've got like so much, I don't know, emotion and hormones and all that stuff when you're younger that I think it makes it more dramatic and seem more passionate or, you know, deeper love that you experience then because you're a teenager and your hormones are all over the place

and coupling that with the fact you can't see each other all the time. So as teenagers, you're sneaking around, you, you don't, you know, you're not living together. You can't live together. You see each other in class, you see each other. You don't have to clean up each other's lawns. Yeah, Dutch ovens don't exist, you know, except with your siblings. And anyway, so you made a bet

with somebody nine years ago that you'd get a dollar for every time you said Dutch oven.

[Jeff]

You know, whatever. So. So, yeah, but I think that, yeah, it is def comparing apples to oranges.

And it's not like to me, and I'm sorry, high school students, that's not even the real world yet, man. That's not even the real world. That's like your hormones are so different. You got love and you've got hate and that, that fire that burns in high school is so different.

I think it's real love though, for the top.

For a 17 year old, it's a real 16 year old love. But when you look back at it, that's not love.

I think it is when you fall in love anytime, I think it's real love. But I don't think that she can compare that looking back on it to what she has with her husband now. Does that make any sense?

So what are you saying, like the definition of love changes with your age? Because Certainly love at 25 or 35 years old is way different than love at 15 years old.

[Jen]

It's definitely different. But I wouldn't say that teenage love isn't love.

I would say that it's not love.

I think, I mean, like my high school boyfriend, I think I really loved him.

I think it's real love, but I just think it's different when you're older. It's a different, it's a Different, maybe form of it, but I would still, I wouldn't say it's not real.

It seems to me that when people say this, they are confused. Comparing it to something like two people are two completely different people. I will say that. I mean, loving more than one person in your life, which is what you do, they're different people. And it's going to be expressed differently. It's going to feel different. And I think by comparing to. And especially what Jen said, looking back on just the good times with somebody, I mean, you got to let that go.

Someone is going to have to explain to me as a guy that phrase, Wendy, that you love them, but you're just not in love with them. Call her Wendy. Because as a guy, I've never understood that. It always has sounded like an excuse to me.

It's really not an excuse, though, because with my husband, he is so great and the total opposite from my ex husband. But there's just things that's missing in our relationship. I mean, it's not exciting anymore and I don't want to leave him, but

just not in love with him.

I mean, it sounds like you're bored, but you still. But you have more feelings, stronger feelings for your ex husband than you do your current.

She says she's not in love with him anymore. And she knows that because she had stronger feelings for her first boyfriend than she does her current husband. And this first boyfriend was years ago.

Yeah, I know that feeling. I'm in the same situation.

What's going on?

[Caller - Married Woman]

I've been married to my husband for nine and a half years and we have three children together. He's a great guy, but, you know, put behind everything else in the life, in his life. And, you know, started, you know, talking with friends of mine, male friends, who are, you know, friends of both of ours. And, yeah, I have feelings, very strong feelings for an old boyfriend. However, when I told my husband I was not in love with him, but I did love him because he was the father of my children and because he put me behind everything else. He was. You know what? I gotta fix this. It's not worth losing you because I've put myself first. So it does happen.

[Jen]

But was he able to turn it around? Were you guys able to turn it around?

It's a work in progress. We are work. He is working on it. I'm working on it too, because, I mean, it does take two to goof up a marriage, not just one. I'm not perfect by any means. It's working. But, you know, there's always. Well, what if.

It's always been my experience with women that once you fall out of love that it's really tough to turn that switch back on.

[Melissa]

That's what I was gonna ask her.

[Jeff]

Well, I just also. And I brought up the word bored earlier or frustrated or overwhelmed, because I do think there are some women that misinterpret what they're feeling. I mean, I do think there are women that have totally fallen out of love with somebody. But I also think that there's some women that are frustrated, tired. You know, like she said, neglect feels neglected because an old boyfriend was not the father of your children. You may not have lived together. You may have been able to do fun stuff because you didn't have responsibilities. I just. I do find it sad that as people's lives progress that they don't enjoy what they've done. They don't enjoy the fact that they've had children with somebody. They don't enjoy because they let the fatigue and the busyness of it, you know, kind of water down the emotions for each other.

[Bird Show Host]

You don't agree, Jen?

[Jen]

I think it's different for every couple, I think, because each individual is so unique and so different. I think it's so different for each and every couple that get to a stage like that. I think some women could be exactly What Melissa said, just like, tired and caught up in the day to day and sort of lose that emotion. But I think also people can get so far apart from each other that there is no way to get back.

[Bird Show Host]

But if you're comparing it always to the first boyfriend or the first girlfriend and you think that you're going to keep that. That flame going for 10 years with your current husband, I think that's just a mirage.

[Jeff]

And the funny thing is, I look back at teenage romance and I find it kind of silly compared to what I'm doing. Not that I'm not diminishing it.

that the people that I was with back then would say the same thing about me.

I think that's the point I was trying to make when Jen said that love back at 16 years old is the same now as an adult. To me, it seems that love seems like a silly life.

[Jeff]

It was fun and it was spontaneous and it was cool, and it was something we did because we were bored in Columbia, Tennessee, and, you know, all these things. But I'm sure, you know, if I went to them and saw their life now, it's far more. Well, you know, the feelings I have for who they're with now is far deeper than they ever were for me.

[Jen]

What I disagreed with you on is you said teenage love wasn't real love, and that's why I disagree with you. I thought it was real love. I think it is real love. It's a different form of it, and it's at a different time of life, of course, but I think teenagers that are in love are really in love.

It might be a shallower version of the love that you have when you're in your 20s and then 30s and then for your kids and then whatever, but it's.

But to me, I don't think you can say it's not real love.

Good morning. Hi. So, okay. My first love and I broke up over 12 years ago. And we broke up for valid reasons. I was 19 and all of that. But I still love him and I'll never forget him. But your first love is your first love for a reason. It's always going to be the most, in my opinion, the most powerful. I've never loved anybody as much as I've. I've loved my first love.

You know, I mean, he. He was my first for. For everything.

I mean, I understand that he's very important in your life, but nobody, it seems to me, for some people, nobody else has a chance.

Basically, my philosophy is now. I mean, I'm 30 and I'm still single. But what. The guys that I'm meeting, all the good guys are either taken or they're gay. There's really just not any. Not the ones that I've met. There's just not really any good guys out there. And my first love and I. I mean, we broke up for valid reasons. It would have never worked, but, you know, still, he was my first love for a reason. And it's. I mean, it. I'm sure I'll fall in love one day. But, I mean, he will always hold a special place in my heart because he was my first love.

Hi. I just called because I get so frustrated when I hear this stuff. I love him, but I'm not in love with him anymore. I'm currently divorced from my high school sweetheart and the father of my children because I felt the same way. I wasn't. I loved him, but I wasn't in love with him anymore. And I live with the regret every day of taking him for granted and treating him the way that I did and pushing him away because I didn't think I was in love anymore.

It drives Me crazy. Melissa's right. It's bored and the excitement's not there anymore. And after a couple of years, that every relationship and it's on you to make things exciting and to bring that spark back. I'd give anything to redo the mistakes I made and it just, it drives me insane.

So what's the definition of being in love and not in love then? I'm in love. I just don't love you. What's the definition there?

I'm with you, Bird. I think it's an excuse you have that when you first meet somebody, you have that tingling and excitement and you do everything you can to make each other feel special and everything else. And I think after a few years you quit doing that and so you lose that excitement and you don't feel special anymore and you look for that somewhere else when you should be looking for it inside your marriage. And I would, like I said, she'll regret if he's a great man like she said, and she just doesn't feel like she's in love anymore. She'll regret what she's doing. Just appreciate your husband, love him, and bring the excitement back.

Especially once she goes to her 10 year high school reunion and sees that the guy that she thinks she's in love with is 70 pounds heavier.

So I totally think it's normal to be married and not be in love, but you have to work at that, you know, and as far as, you know, comparing it to your first love, though those feelings may have been genuine, it's different. I mean, you're married now. You, you stop trying to impress each other as much as you did before when you were had your boyfriend. But I've been married 27 years and we've had our moments where just hearing him breathe would annoy, you know, when you just get that annoyed and I'm thinking, I really just don't even like you anymore. But we talk about it, you know, and you're honest with each other and say, I need you to woo me. I need, I want to kiss you and be turned on. You have to talk through it, push through it. It is normal.

See, that's why that kind of love to me is like a real love that you have to push through. And like 16 and 17 year old

And I think that the first true love ordeal is just a bunch of psycho babble for women who think that they're still in love with their first boyfriend because they realize what they had and they let it go and somebody else came along and took him. And I'm just speaking from experience because I'm married to my husband and my. His ex girlfriend and I got into an argument and a fight, and she's already married to somebody else. And she just came up to me when I first met her and said, I'm his first true love, and I hold a spot in his heart that you will never feel. And I think that's just ridiculous.

The time spent with the person you're with as an adult is far more. Is far greater than it was with the time you spent when you were a teenager with somebody. And so, yes, there's gonna be times where you're bored. There's times where you're just gonna sit on the couch. Well, if you have an iPhone, you can send as long of a text message as you want. Like, there's no stopping and starting.

So the world should go on iPhone. Get creative with your cell phone camera. I know a lot of you high school students have Done that, and it's gotten you in trouble. And also, if you're asked out over text, be sure to respond within a few hours. Okay, so that is the standard now to which if you're going to accept or you're going to ask for prom over text, that's your standard. Check out these stats. So 40% of teens between 13 and 17 say they'd consider asking their date to prom via text, and 64% say they'd accept the invitation by text.

Because it's just so normal. It's just regular language now. It's sort of just the mode of communication. And I don't think that it carries the same weight that we put on it, the same meaning that we put on it that it does for teenagers, because they've always had it. They've always come up with it. I mean, think about it. I didn't have a cell phone until I was in college. And I mean, they've had cell phones since they were 10 or 9 or even younger than that. Like their parents are giving them cell phones. So this texting mode of communication doesn't have a diminished value like we put a diminished value on it. Even though I still believe that it's not the right way to go and it's not proper and it's not, you know, it's not being a gentleman to ask your date to prom via text message doesn't have that same meaning if you're younger as it does to us. So, I mean, yes, I get it, why they're doing it, but I still disagree with it.

Okay, I agree. I agree with what you're saying about the age thing and how I agree with that, but here's where I disagree, is that you're starting to set the bar so low for dudes that when they get older, you won't be able to reverse this.
