Actually there's a couple of them because I remember I told Melissa about one last night. This isn't that one. This is a situation where somebody said something to me that made me feel like I'm about 5 10, 5 11. Made me feel about 110, 111.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
What happened? I usually have such a thick skin.
Bretzky
I have been calling someone who I wouldn't consider a friend, but an acquaintance by the wrong name for over a year.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
And they just corrected you?
Bretzky
Yes.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
What happened? Who was it?
Bretzky
So much so that they were in my phone incorrectly.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
No way.
Caller/Guest
No, no, no, no.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
How did you Figure this out when
Bretzky
she finally had enough of it and said thanks with a couple of drinks in the system.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Oh, no. Oh, no.
Caller/Guest
Oh.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Foot and mouth.
Caller/Guest
What happened?
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Was it like you were calling her Laura and it's Lauren, Amanda, Andrea. Oh, that's a little bit of a difference. What were you calling her?
Bretzky
Andrea.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
And her name's Amanda?
Bretzky
Yes, ma'.
Announcer
Am.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Oh, and you did this for over a year? No, I could completely see me doing the same thing.
Bretzky
And I think what happened was. I think the first time that I met her. Cause I don't. I have crappy hearing in, like, bar scenes and club scenes and at concerts and stuff like that. Like, I just. If there's loud. Ambient noise.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Yeah.
Bretzky
My hearing is lousy. So just so you know, your headphones
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
are almost as loud as Burt's.
Bretzky
Yeah, they're getting. They might be getting louder. So in situations like bars and stuff, bear with me if I ever laugh at an inappropriate time, because all that means is I didn't hear you. And it's the same thing I do to people with heavy accents. I just assumed the last thing you said was funny. If I couldn't understand it.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Smile and nod and laugh.
Bretzky
So I think what happened was that she said I screwed it up already. What's her real name? She said her real name's Amanda. Amanda? Yeah. And I just heard Andrea, and then it just stuck.
Caller/Guest
Oh, no.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
But she allowed you to call her for over a year. Call her by the wrong name before she said something.
Bretzky
Yeah, but it's a person that I have contact with once or twice a year, but I have sent emails, and I have not gone back yet into my email to look and see if I. So, you know, sometimes you just send an email that just starts with, hey, hope you're well, blah, blah, blah. And then other times it starts with Andrea, comma, how's everything with you? I saw your husband the other day at the. Blah, blah, blah. You know, try to be nice about it. And for once in my life, I'm hoping I wasn't nice in my emails.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Oh, people tend to call me Michelle a lot. Like, I don't know why they. If they miss. If they. If they call me the wrong name, it's always Michelle. And so the first time. There's been plenty of times where I've just let it go because I feel like rude and a jerk by just, you know, saying no. It's actually Melissa. But I wonder how long it would take me to correct them if they continuously did it. And it would take me a While. Because I would just feel so awkward. I wonder how often I've done it to other people and they don't correct me.
Bretzky
Now, Jessica always gets Jennifer for some reason, and sometimes we just let that go.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Just let it.
Announcer
Yeah. I get Whitney, so. I mean, you do Whitney. Wendy.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Wendy.
Caller/Guest
Yeah.
Announcer
Especially if you're in your loud place. So I just let it go for
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
the most part because I feel I don't want to embarrass them, you know?
Bretzky
But it's not. I mean, they shouldn't be. Isn't it. It should. That embarrassing.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
It should be embarrassing, right?
Announcer
Well, one correction's fine. If you have to do it multiple times, then.
Bretzky
No. Hey, Candy. Welcome to the bird Show.
Caller/Guest
Hi.
Bretzky
What's going on?
Caller/Guest
I've done the same thing at work. There was a guy that worked there, and I called him Steve. I introduced him as Steve to other co workers, and over a year later. Oh, no. Found out through his girlfriend that his name was Jack.
Bretzky
Jack.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Jack.
Bretzky
He's not even close. Did you apologize to him or what? Like, did you just.
Caller/Guest
Yes, I. You know, I went up and I said, I don't know how I ever come up with Steve.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
But that's funny.
Bretzky
I thought. I was sure that she was gonna say, like, Scott or something.
Caller/Guest
Yeah, yeah.
Bretzky
Not even close.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Something even close.
Bretzky
Hey, Rebecca. Welcome to the show.
Caller/Guest
Good morning. I'm a big fan.
Bretzky
Oh, thank you very much.
Caller/Guest
Well, don't feel bad. Cause my neighbor across the street called my father by the wrong name for eight years.
Bretzky
Oh, no.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Oh, no. Oh, yeah.
Bretzky
Okay. What's your father's real name?
Caller/Guest
Paul.
Bretzky
And what did the neighbor call him?
Caller/Guest
Fred.
Bretzky
Fred. That's not even close. You know what? Thank you so much to the bird show listeners for making me feel so much smarter.
Caller/Guest
Yeah.
Bretzky
Because at least I had the same first letter.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Yeah.
Bretzky
If it's talked about, rumored, or gossiped, you'll hear it first on Jen Hobby's Entertainment Buzz Q100. All right, the entertainment buzz is gonna be on pause for a minute. Okay. I can't. Joanna typed this quickly. What's your name? Is it Margie?
Caller/Guest
Marjorie. Yeah.
Bretzky
Marjorie.
Caller/Guest
Yeah.
Bretzky
Okay. Marjorie. How are you?
Caller/Guest
I'm great. How are you?
Bretzky
Good. How long has your co worker been calling you by the wrong name?
Caller/Guest
Since I started, which is almost three years.
Bretzky
Three years.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
And you haven't corrected him?
Caller/Guest
I corrected him once and so called me Maggie. And he's told my boss my name is Maggie.
Bretzky
How often do you have interaction with this guy?
Caller/Guest
Almost every day.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
And he calls you Maggie?
Caller/Guest
He calls me Maggie.
Bretzky
And you're Marjorie.
Caller/Guest
My name is Marjorie.
Bretzky
All right, listen, Marjorie. It's time to stand up.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
We gotta call us.
Bretzky
It is time to take a stand. I want you to hold on, okay? I talk to you after entertainment buzz. And we want. Today is the day you're gonna fix it, okay? All right.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
We're gonna hold your hand while you do it.
Bretzky
You have to hold on to your identity, sister.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
That's right.
Bretzky
Do not let Maggie Sayers put you down.
Caller/Guest
Yeah.
Co-host (possibly Jen or Melissa)
Do not let him steal your name at work.
Bretzky

This episode dives into one of life's most awkward (and relatable) social blunders: calling someone by the wrong name… repeatedly. Bretzky shares his mortifying experience of referring to an acquaintance by the wrong name for more than a year. The cast and callers chime in with their own stories, creating a humorous, candid exploration of name-mangling, embarrassment, and why we often avoid correcting each other over small—yet painfully awkward—errors.
The Confession:
Bretzky opens up about a recent incident where he realized he'd been calling an acquaintance “Andrea,” when her actual name is “Amanda."
How It Happened:
He suspects the mishap began in a noisy environment—highlighting how simple misunderstandings can spiral when left uncorrected.
Extent of the Mistake:
Not only did Bretzky use the wrong name in person, but he’s unsure if it extended to emails as well.
Awkwardness in Correction:
Co-hosts discuss the discomfort around correcting people who use the wrong name. Many admit to “just letting it go,” even when it happens repeatedly.
Empathy and Relatability:
The entire cast agrees this is an easy mistake to make and difficult to undo after time passes, generating group laughter and camaraderie.
"My neighbor across the street called my father by the wrong name for eight years." – Rebecca (05:59)
“At least I had the same first letter…” – Bretzky, reflecting on his comparatively minor error (06:20)
Marjorie has been addressed as “Maggie” by a coworker almost daily for nearly three years, despite correcting him once.
Encouragement from the Team:
The hosts rally Marjorie to stand up for herself and reclaim her name—infusing the segment with humor and support.
The mood is self-deprecating, humorous, and empathetic. The Bert Show crew, through real-life blunders and listener confessions, manages to turn cringe-worthy moments into collective laughter and validation. The episode is a lighthearted yet relatable dive into the ways small social mistakes can linger—and the power of finally (or never) addressing them.
Bottom Line:
Everyone gets names wrong sometimes, and sometimes it isn't “just you.” Whether you laugh it off, awkwardly let it slide, or finally take a stand, you're in good company.
