The Bird Show.
Radio Host
What? Came up in a meeting.
Tracy
The hair. It's not a secret. It's not my theory.
Radio Host
It's just you have sort of been. I don't want to say obsessed about it, but you think it's odd.
Tracy
Well, she brought it up. Her. Yeah, I don't think it's odd. I think it's interesting. That.
Radio Host
Interestingly odd that.
Tracy
That. One, she would do it and two, admit to it.
Co-host 1
What are you talking about? Wanna fill us in?
Radio Host
What you talking about?
Co-host 1
What you talking about?
Tracy
Tracy lightened her hair so she would look more like her daughter.
Co-host 1
You did?
Tracy
Yes. I heard about this.
Co-host 1
Wait, what?
Tracy
Okay, so here's the thing.
Radio Host
And then Jeff puts his head down. Okay. And my part's done.
Tracy
Yeah.
Co-host 2
And Bert you don't think this is odd?
Radio Host
I think it's. I have never heard of anybody else doing it either. Yeah, I think it's kind of odd.
Tracy
She was born with brown hair, and my hair is obviously brown. And I was all excited that she was gonna look like me. She was gonna resemble. You know, she was gonna look like my daughter because she is my daughter. My husband has blonde hair and had very blonde hair when he was little. And as her hair has been falling out and new hair is growing in, it's blonde. My daughter is going to be blonde, and I don't look anything like her. If I take her to the store, people are going to assume she's my niece or she's my friend's daughter. They're not gonna think she's mine.
Aren't all. Aren't many babies blonde and then their hair darkens? Like, aren't many babies born with blue eyes and they darken to different colors?
Okay, well, maybe I wanted a little mini me, but I can't highlight. I can't dye her hair, so my only option was to highlight my own. So I'm gradually lightening my hair so I'll look more like my daughter.
Radio Host
Wow.
Tracy
Gradually.
Co-host 2
So how light are you gonna go?
Tracy
Like gens? No,
Co-host 1
no.
Tracy
I mean, I think I'll stick like this for a little while and see how blonde her hair gets. And I just want. I want her to look like she's mine.
Radio Host
I have never looked.
Co-host 2
You are willing to go blonde if Ella's hair turns blonde?
Tracy
Maybe not as blonde as, you know, you guys, but lighter so she looks like she's mine.
Radio Host
Are you using this as a. Is this a hair color that you've always wanted and you're using your daughter as the excuse?
Tracy
No, I've always been brunette and been fine with that until now, since your daughter's had brunette.
Co-host 1
That's hilarious. I mean, what's the harm in it?
Co-host 2
Who cares?
Co-host 1
Do what you want to do. But I just think it's funny that you've got that sort of. Maybe it's an insecure. I don't know if that's the right word for it, that people will think she's not yours.
Tracy
Well, I mean, it's not so much that. I just think it's adorable when, like, when you go to the store and you see, like, a mom and their child, and it's clear, like, Stacy and Hollis. Like, Hollis looks like Stacy. I mean, Stacy goes out with Hollis, and you can say, that is Hollis's mommy, right? But if I go out with Ella. People are gonna think she's my niece. And I just think it's cute when it's like, I understand her little.
Co-host 2
I always assume a baby with a woman is that woman's baby, just so you know.
Co-host 1
Unless there's two women there. So if you had a friend, like a best friend with blonde hair, and it was the two of you at the grocery store with Ella, then maybe they would think that. But if it's just you and just her, they're gonna know you're the mommy
Tracy
or they're gonna think you're her mommy.
Co-host 1
That does happen with my best friend, Shay, because her daughter's blonde. So when the three of us are together, a lot of people do assume that her daughter is mine because of the blonde hair connection, but I don't think it makes her mad. I need to find out now. I never thought about it before, just
Tracy
for the record, because we had only spoken about it brief during the meeting. This extended conversation has made you crazy enough that I'm starting to not like you, right?
Co-host 1
That's not that crazy.
Tracy
Yes, it is. It's nuts.
Co-host 1
How harm does it do you're physically
Tracy
changing your appearance so that people you don't even know make assumptions that you don't even know they're going to make that fit into the mold that you have preset for those assumptions.
Radio Host
How's it any crazier than what you've done? The same thing for her daughter. You've been lightening your hair Before Ella was ever here, before she was ever even here, you had predicted she was gonna be that hair color. Good morning.
Tracy
I put sun in. Go out in the sun for me
because there's been so much sunshine lately.
Radio Host
Good morning, Q100.
Caller 1
Yeah, I'm calling because you. Tracy was saying how she didn't want to be mistaken for her daughter's aunt or niece, but I mixed, and my mom's white, so is my mom supposed to, like, paint her skin brown so she looks like me?
Radio Host
Creating a lot of problems there.
Tracy
I mean, it's not so. I'm not worried about what other people think. I just think it's cute that. I don't know. I just.
Radio Host
So instead of having matching shirts on, like some moms will do with their kids, you're just going with the matching hair color?
Tracy
It started when I was holding her. I looked in the mirror, and I'm like, I have dark brown hair and she has blonde hair. She doesn't look like my daughter. And I mean, blonde hair is pretty. Why not?
Radio Host
Daisy Good Morning. You're on Q100.
Caller 1
Good morning. I understand entirely what Tracy is going through. Wow. I have a beautiful daughter who happens to have dark brown skin and I don't. And I went to meet her teacher once and her teacher told me that she wasn't my child. And what's very interesting is her name is Daisy too. So there was no reason to misunderstand that I was her parent. And the lady argued with me that that was my daughter.
Co-host 2
I can't believe she did that.
Caller 1
I had to tell her three times. I had to ask the class to let everybody, all the students know me. So they're like, yeah, that's Daisy's mom. Yeah.
Caller 2
Because I.
Co-host 2
It doesn't matter what the child looks like. It doesn't matter the skin color, the hair color, the ey, whatever. If it is a single woman. I guess you're right, Jen. If it's a single woman with a child, I assume mommy and daughter.
Co-host 1
I do have a friend of a friend who's married to a black man and she's white, but their baby came out like real black. So she goes to the store with her child who's way totally different skin color than her. And people question it all the time. And she has this. She just looks at him, rolls her eyes and is like, yeah, this is my kid.
Radio Host
And I know I've seen this on like the playground before where some mothers will approach a woman that they think is like the nanny, but it's really the mom because there's zero resemblance whatsoever, really.
Tracy
And I think I'd be okay with it if like, maybe some of her features resembled me. But I look at her, I don't think she looks anything like me. Like if I didn't birth her, I'd question whether or not, like, she was mine.
Radio Host
Here's Terry. Hey, Terry, good morning. Here on Q100.
Caller 1
Hey, good morning. Love your show.
Radio Host
Thank you.
Caller 1
But yeah, I have two very brown skinned kids and my sister's brown skin. I am very light skinned. And every time I took them to the mall, they'd say, oh, your sister's kids are so cute. So I would tan like crazy just so I'd match them.
SpinQuest Advertiser
That's awesome.
Tracy
Doesn't Scott have blonde hair?
Yeah. I mean, she looks like skin. We got skin for him, but not me.
Co-host 1
Tracy's gonna have another baby. So that, that second one, darn it, comes out looking like her.
Radio Host
Hey, Karen, good Morning. You're on Q100.
Caller 1
Hi.
Caller 2
Hi. I just wanna tell you, Tracy, you're not crazy. I'VE done the same thing. My daughter has the most beautiful red copper hair, and it's actually my hair. But my hair started turning white when I was like in my 30s, so my hair is almost completely white. And I've had so many people ask me if she's my granddaughter and it's heartbreaking. So I now have red hair. I look like my daughter.
Radio Host
You changed the hair to match your daughter's hair?
Caller 2
I did, because it's actually my natural color. But we in my family, we turn white at young age.
Tracy
Yeah, blonde is my natural color too.

In this lighthearted and relatable episode, the cast delves into the topic of parents—particularly mothers—who alter their appearance to resemble their children. The conversation is sparked by Tracy's recent decision to gradually lighten her hair so she’ll look more like her baby daughter, whose hair is becoming increasingly blonde. The segment balances humor and empathy as the co-hosts and callers weigh in on parental identity, social perception, and the sometimes unexpected lengths people go to feel connected to their children.
The conversation is warm, candid, and filled with humor, yet it touches on genuine feelings of parental pride, vulnerability, and the importance of feeling connected to one’s child. The show pokes fun at the lengths people might go to foster that bond, but also invites listeners to share their experiences—ultimately revealing a shared human desire for belonging and identification.
The Bert Show’s segment turns an unusual parenting choice into an engaging exploration of identity, appearance, and societal assumptions. Through personal anecdotes and live caller stories, the episode combines laughter with thoughtful consideration of how parents see themselves—and want to be seen—in relation to their kids. Listeners come away with insight into the little (and sometimes not-so-little) things parents do out of love, pride, and sometimes, insecurity.
