This episode sponsored by Lettuce Financial. Nobody tells you this when you become self employed. The second you stop being a W2 employee, taxes suddenly get way more complicated. And a lot of freelancers, creators and consultants end up overpaying without even realizing it. That's why I started using Lettuce Financial. Lettuce is built specifically for businesses of one. It helps simplify the entire solo back office 10 taxes, bookkeeping, payroll, healthcare, and retirement planning all in one streamlined platform. So instead of stitching together a bunch of different tools and stressing every quarter about what you owe, you actually have a system built for self employed people. One thing I really like is that lettuce helps you understand what money is actually safe to spend versus what should be set aside for taxes. Honestly, it just makes running your business feel way less overwhelming. If you're self employed, there's a good chance you could be saving more money and spending a lot less time managing your back office. See for yourself at Lettuce Co today, that's Lettuce Co. If you, your parent or spouse served in the military, you could join our family. Our members saved an average of $70

Hey, the Birch show.
Host 4
Heather. Here is her situation where she can't quite make out if she's got an inappropriate gift or not.
Host 3
I think she knows it's inappropriate. The question is, does she accept it?
Host 4
Hey, Heather.
Caller Heather
Hey.
Host 4
How are you today?
Caller Heather
Okay. How are you doing?
Host 4
Okay.
Host 3
All right.
Host 4
Do you feel comfortable telling us in what kind of industry you work?
Caller Heather
Okay. I work in real estate.
Host 4
Okay. All right. And you have been working there for how long?
Caller Heather
For four years.
Host 4
Four years. And the relationship that you have with your boss has strictly been a work employee relationship until this point?
Caller Heather
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I have a couple bosses. Like, it's not that I work just for one person. I actually work for four people.
Host 5
Okay.
Caller Heather
And like, I see a different person each day essentially.
Host 3
Okay.
Caller Heather
And this one particular person, he has been there only two years and it's strictly, strictly work relationship. Like, I. I'm very clear on that. Mm.
Host 5
Okay.
Caller Heather
He, on the other hand, is. Has kind of made it clear that he has a crush on me.
Host 4
In what kind of way?
Caller Heather
I mean, just sort of like I can. You know, a woman can kind of tell when a guy is trying to just like, be a little extra nice or like a little extra complimentary or, you know, he's made it really clear that he's single and looking to date, you know, I don't know, it just like.
Host 5
Is he flirty, Flirty with you?
Caller Heather
He's flirty, and not in a way that I ever feel uncomfortable, but I'm always kind of, like, aware that he. He thinks he would like to go on a date with me. And I'm like, no, I'm. You're my boss, and that's it.
Host 5
Okay.
Host 4
And in. In all honesty, have you ever used that to your advantage in the office?
Caller Heather
No. No. I don't even know a way that I could use it to my, like. No.
Host 4
Yeah, like by sleeping with him or something.
Caller Heather
No, that would be wonderful.
Host 4
Okay.
Caller Heather
So basically yesterday, he was the person that I was working for, and he gave me an American Express gift card, a 1500 dollar. And he was like, I really want you to have this, and I want you to do something special with it this weekend for Valentine's Day. I was like, $1,500.
Host 3
Buy yourself a new car.
Caller Heather
I don't know what I'm supposed to do, but I know that of the four people that I work with, for example, he's the one that's made the least money this past year. He's not a wealthy guy, so $1,500 is a lot of money for him to be giving me.
Host 5
My expectations for Burton Jeff have just increased.
Host 4
You better think again.
Host 3
Don't give yourself anxiety over that.
Host 4
Are you the top seller in the company?
Caller Heather
No, no, no, I'm not personally an agent. Like, I sort of am an assistant for all these people.
Host 4
I'm just trying to think of in somehow some way that he's trying to tie in, like, a bonus angle to the whole thing.
Host 2
But a Valentine's Day gifts?
Host 3
Yeah. Even if it is a bonus angle. That's weird. On Valentine's Day?
Caller Heather
Yeah.
Host 2
Give it to her in March at the end of the quarter or something. But yeah, I do agree that I think that's inappropriate.
Host 5
Have you told him you've had any financial problems at all?
Caller Heather
No, and I haven't. I'm fine.
Host 4
It's just coming out of nowhere.
Host 2
And he's not giving anybody else the same thing.
Caller Heather
No, and it's specifically for Valentine's Day. He even sent me an email already being like, so what are you gonna do? What are you gonna use it for Valentine's Day? He was like, I'm not doing anything. Like, weird.
Host 4
Hey, Lisa. Yeah, it's a little weird.
Caller Heather
Yeah. I would take the money and run, you know. He gave it to you as a gift. Don't Look, a gift. Trust in the mouth. Go have a great Valentine's Day.
Host 2
Now he's expecting something from that. Like, you're not gonna hear the end of it. Yeah.
Host 3
He doesn't want you. He's the gift horse, and he doesn't want you looking at his mouth. Say that, guaranteed.
Caller Heather
I'm thinking, if I took him out, if I took him out for like, a thank you for the gift, don't do it.
Host 2
That's what he's trying to get you to do.
Caller Heather
I, like, kept it very platonic and very, like, thank you so much, you know, Would that be.
Host 2
No.
Caller Heather
Weird. Like, then. Then I'm not just, like, taking his money. Then I'm sort of like, I don't know.
Host 4
If you open that door little bit, it might as well be all the way open. In a guy's mind, that would be you opening the door, and it will become a huge hassle.
Caller Heather
Just dinner?
Host 4
Yes.
Host 2
I mean, you sound surprised by that. I mean, you said you have how many bosses? Four bosses?
Caller Heather
Yes.
Host 2
And you take him to dinner, like,
Caller Heather
essentially with the money that he's sort
Host 2
of paying, let me just tell you, is the co worker. Okay, so I'm your co worker, and we're, you know, everybody, your co workers. But you're almost sometimes in competition for bonuses and salaries and everything. And that would not go unnoticed that you went out to dinner with a boss, you know? Yeah. I would notice that. And it would come back to haunt you in the future.
Host 4
I am still with caller number one and saying, taking the money. Take the money.
Caller Heather
Really?
Host 4
Yes. Yes. Take the money.
Host 3
Just say thank you and never thank you. That's it.
Host 4
It was a gift. They have. It's in his head. Take the money. It was a gift. Thank you very much. Buh. Bye. Gotta go.
Host 2
Here's the thing, though. You just said that in a guy's mind, a little crack in the door is opening the door in his mind. Don't you think her accepting the gift he will interpret as, oh, okay, she might be a little interested.
Host 3
No, she might be a little broke.
Host 4
Take that cash. Hey, Angela.
Host 3
Good morning.
Caller Heather
Hi. I think she's an administrative assistant. I don't think it's that unusual. I mean, I work. I work in the law firm industry and we get bonuses all the time. You know, anywhere from 1,000 to $5,000.
Host 2
Valentine's Day.
Caller Heather
It's kind of weird that it's on Valentine's Day.
Host 4
Like, I don't think that that's a mistake, that the timing there happened on Valentine's Day.
Host 3
I want to work.
Host 4
He is your boss. He gave you a fifteen hundred dollar bonus. It's not for you to try to figure out what it's for. Take the money and get up.
Host 3
Yeah.
Host 2
Even with the emails that says what are you doing Valentine's Day? And what are you gonna.
Host 4
She's got to shut the door on
Host 5
him and say email him and tell him you're going on a date with a guy and you're using the money for the date.
Host 3
That would go over swimmingly.
Host 5
Mine as well.
Host 2
My take is just give it back because I wouldn't want the drama that comes with it.
Host 3
If you have three other bosses, are they or any of the other ones single?
Caller Heather
Well, two of them are women and one of them is married, so no.
Host 3
So he's the only single one. You can take them to dinner?
Host 6
No.
Host 5
You're crazy, man.
Host 3
Times are tough. Work for your money.
Host 2
Yeah. You'll never. Yeah, it'll change the course of your work environment from here on out.
Host 3
Yeah.
Host 4
If you go to dinner or if
Host 5
you take the money.
Host 3
You know what?
Host 4
She as an employee hasn't done anything wrong by taking the money.
Host 2
But he will not just get in his mind it's not just a gift and says, oh well, I hope he had a good. You know it will come back to haunt her from him.
Host 4
It's not her responsibility to determine that though. He gave her the money. As a boss employee relationship, I understand,
Host 2
but in a work environment, if you don't shut the door by not even taking the money, then you don't have to deal with the drama in the office because he is going to be on you in the office all the time. More so than he is now if you take his money.
Host 4
Hey Susan. Good morning.
Caller Heather
Hey guys. I just wanted to tell her that taking the money makes her not just about love. It makes her expect object to him because it's basically like he's buying her now because she won't accept him. So he's trying to find another way to get to her.
Host 2
It is a
Caller Heather
completely wrong.
Host 3
I think she takes the money, only goes to dinner with him because imagine how much she could get to lay down with him like mommy and daddy did once so many years ago.
Host 2
But everybody in the office will think she did that.
Host 3
That's like 75. Who cares? Guess what?
Host 2
She's in the work environment.
Host 4
Yeah.
Host 3
A new pair of Jimmy choosing. They can think whatever they want. Hey Lynn.
Host 4
Good morning.
Host 3
She is a whore and she should be proud of it.
Host 4
Hey lan. Good morning.
Caller Heather
Good morning. No, it's Inappropriate, definitely. No, I mean, you know, that kind of money leads to other things. It's like if you wanted to give her just a nice gift for Valentine's Day, a couple hundred bucks or something. But fifteen hundred dollars? She's expecting something.
Host 4
She is a good employee, and he wanted to go over the top. In her mind, she's perfectly. It's perfectly acceptable for her to think I've done a great job and this guy is going over the top to give me a bonus.
Host 2
He's abusing his and masking it as a bonus so that he can try to get to her.
Host 4
Take the money. Take that money.
Host 2
Give her flowers for Valentine's Day. That's sweet. That's appropriate. That's it.
Host 4
Hey, Laura. Good morning.
Caller Heather
Hi. This is Laura. I just wanted to let you know that I think she ought to take everyone out to dinner with it.
Host 3
Like us?
Caller Heather
Yeah, you know, I mean, her company. I mean, if. But I think that would be a nice gesture.
Host 5
I think that's a great idea. Take all four bosses out to dinner.
Caller Heather
Yeah.
Host 4
Does make a statement. It does make a statement.
Host 5
That.
Host 4
Thanks a lot for the money, but I want to share it with everybody else here.
Host 5
I think that's a great idea and a way to mask it, too.
Host 4
On her side, I still don't see anything wrong with taking that cash. I got to be honest with y'. All. It is a bonus. In her mind, that is a bonus. If he's got the problem, if he's coming on to her, that's not. That's not her problem.
Host 5
Kind of agree with you on that one. Or just tell him you're using the money for another date.
Host 2
But imagine the work environment. Like, just. If you don't want. If you have no interest in him, then don't accept his gifts.
Host 3
The problem with you, Melissa, is you care what other people think of you. Like, if you could somehow. Yeah, if you could. If you could somehow lose that filter and just live in your own moment like other people aren't important. It's about you.
Host 2
If she's an assistant, unless I'm nearby,
Host 3
then it's about me. Then it's about me.
Host 2
He's an administrative assistant, and he's her boss, and he's doing this. It is highly inappropriate. And I'm telling you, if you want that reputation in the office, take it. Take the money, take him to dinner. But you'll have that reputation in the office with everybody.
Host 4
Hey, Julie. Good morning.
Caller Heather
Hey. I think this is indecent proposal money for sure. I think that he's expecting her to get a hotel room with the card.
Host 4
But just because he's expecting that doesn't mean she has to do it.
Caller Heather
I think if he had framed it as a bonus, if he had said, this is a bonus, maybe it would be different. But he didn't say it. He said, I want you to do something really nice for Valentine's Day. I think the only way she could keep the money is if she's really clear that she's doing the most unromantic thing possible, like, oh, I bought a new dishwasher with a gift card or something like that.
Host 2
He'll know that he bought her that dishwasher. And then didn't you say that he was following up with emails, like, what are you gonna do with the money? I'm not doing anything for Valentine's Day. Didn't you say that's what he said after the fact? After the offer?
Caller Heather
Yeah, definitely. I mean, he's definitely made it clear that he wants to go out, I think.
Host 4
And you make it perfectly clear back to him that that's not gonna happen. That agreed. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with the cash, but I know on Valentine's Day, I got a date set
Host 2
up if you really wanted. Yeah. And I think if you really want to tell him it's not gonna happen. Thanks, but give it to an employee that needs it.
Host 3
I wasn't going to do anything for Valentine's Day, but now they got these. $1,500. I'm going to take out one guy on Friday, one guy on Saturday, and get a hotel room with a guy on Sunday. Thank you.
Host 5
That's a great email. No, send that.
Host 4
Seriously? Yes.
Host 2
I mean, and then when he gets. I don't know, I just think, Yeah. I mean, take the money. Everybody thinks you should take the money.
Host 4
Take that cash.
Host 2
But don't complain if your work environment gets hostile or weird from now on, because as the administrative assistant, you have no control. If you have four bosses and he gives you a hard time from now on because you rejected him, it's a bonus. It's going to make your job hell. And it's not a bonus.
Host 4
Heather, we got to run. I would love to follow you up by either email or a call over the next couple of weeks and find out what you did, though.
Caller Heather
Okay.
Host 4
All right. Thanks a lot for calling.
Caller Heather
Thank you.
Host 4
Good luck.
Host 3

Caller Heather

Episode: Vault: She Got an Inappropriate Gift from Her Boss
Date: June 23, 2026
Main Cast: Bert, Kristin, Abby, Cassie, Tommy, and the Bert Show team
Caller: Heather
Theme: Navigating an uncomfortable and ambiguous situation after a boss gives a large and arguably inappropriate Valentine's Day gift to a subordinate.
This episode focuses on listener Heather, who calls in to share her predicament: one of her bosses (among four in her real estate office) has given her a $1,500 American Express gift card specifically for Valentine's Day, sparking concerns about the gift's appropriateness, his intentions, and how she should respond. The Bert Show hosts, joined by callers, examine workplace boundaries, the implications of accepting such a gift, and brainstorm how Heather can navigate this awkward situation without jeopardizing her job or reputation.
Take the Money and Set Boundaries: Some hosts urge Heather to accept it, say thank you, and keep things strictly professional.
Return the Gift: Others caution that accepting it opens the door to unwanted expectations or future drama.
Use the Money Publicly or for Everyone: Some callers suggest using the card in a very public and unambiguous way.
Hosts and callers identify the big red flag: a boss with known romantic interest targeting a subordinate with a lavish, personal gift.
Notable suggestion: shutting it down explicitly.
On being clear with boundaries:
On office politics:
On Heather’s control over the situation:
On the inappropriateness of the gesture:
Throughout the lively debate, the priority is clear: Heather’s safety, professionalism, and reputation. While a few see no harm in treating the gift as a bonus, most warn about the persistent risks—future expectations, rumors, and even harassment—if boundaries are blurred in the workplace. As the show ends, Heather hasn't made a decision but is open to following up with the outcome.
End Note:
The episode captures authentic, funny, and sometimes blunt advice from the Bert Show team and its listeners, highlighting both the comedic and real implications of mixing (too generous) personal gifts with professional relationships, especially within power imbalances.
