Co-host
Good girl.
Host
So golf clap for Joanna.
Joanna
Great job, Joanna.
Host
Joanna, moments after she got engaged, called all of us on the show and said, what do I have to do to get into Filenes early? When's running the brides? I gotta be there. I gotta be there. And she's been desperately looking for a wedding dress. I mean, I think. Did you leave your actual proposal to go to a wedding boutique?
Joanna
Yeah, I already had all my bridesmaids
Co-host
ready and in the car.
Joanna
Yeah, they're in the bed of the truck and we took off.
Host
So it's a big deal for a bride to be here. That's why, you know, women line up as early as 8am on Thursday to get in on Friday, full 24 hours in advance they camp out. And Joanna wanted to cash in on the perks of the bird show and get in early.
Co-host
Well, and also it really affects your wedding budget because if you can get a $10,000 dress for hundreds of dollars, then you have more room to do other things for your wedding. Right.
Host
So. And that's the whole purpose of filing space. And we do want to rem. There is a running at 8 o', clock, but the dresses are here all
Co-host
day, all day long.
Host
And there's thousands.
Wendy
So many of them. Yeah. And they're in all different sort of styles and shapes and sizes and designers and that kind of Thing. So even if you go to a bridal boutique place to try on dresses, there's not going to be this many available. But it is only today at Finlane's basement. Goes all day long, but it is just today.
Host
So on Monday, I gave Joanna her first challenge, and that was to take a picture of herself within a few seconds of waking up and post it on our website. And on Tuesday, she did that.
Co-host
Yeah. And then I gave her her next challenge, which is do three minutes of original comedy, stand up comedy on the radio, which she did that very successfully.
Host
She did that well.
Wendy
And then I gave her the challenge of letting her brothers, her two brothers, pick out childhood pictures of her that we got to put up online. They were very cute.
Joanna
Thank you. Yeah, they did a good job.
Bluff
Yeah.
Host
They could have ruined. They could have tortured you, and they didn't.
Wendy
They were nice.
Co-host
Very nice metal mouth.
Host
And then Wendy gave her her final challenge yesterday.
Joanna
Yeah. It's something that we do usually around American Idol season. It's called ip, where you literally just have the earbuds from an iPhone and you sing to the song. You can't hear what you sound like, but everybody in line at Filene's basement on the air is are gonna see you and hear you. But the thing is, Burt got to pick the song. I had no choosing in the song, so I have no idea what you're gonna sing.
Co-host
So she's saying, I'm not responsible is what she said.
Joanna
I'm not responsible.
Co-host
I'm gonna make you sing. But Burt.
Wendy
Right.
Host
This could be the worst one, because you know that it's happening in public and in front of a lot of people, and we've all done this.
Wendy
I think you should stand up here on the stage.
Joanna
Really?
Wendy
Come on up.
Co-host
And while Joanna's coming up here, what I put. Okie.
Wendy
I feel like I'm in my sorority. I'm hazing again.
Co-host
Right, Right. You've heard people with headphones on that are singing a song that they're listening to in their headphones. And what they may be thinking they're singing is not actually what you hear. So it's. You're hearing the acapella version, and that's basically what Joanna's doing. She's going to hear a song in her earphones, then she's going to sing what she's hearing. But all we hear is Joanna's beautiful voice.
Host
So Tracy right now is setting Joanna up with the ipod headphones.
Co-host
Yes.
Host
Tracy has the song queued up on her iPhone. Okay. And Bert sent over the lyrics. Nobody has seen these yet.
Co-host
Okay.
Host
This is. The only people who know are Bert and Tracy. Even though it's Wendy's challenge, I have no idea. We're all hearing it for the first time.
Wendy
Okay, Joanna, are you ready to swoon us with your talents while you are singing?
Co-host
What is it?
Wendy
I will always love you.
Co-host
Oh, no.
Guest
Whitney.
Wendy
Whitney Houston.
Co-host
Baby crack his wax stand really far away.
Joanna
Wow. Oh, that's a tough one.
Wendy
Here it comes.
Joanna
That only sounds good in the shower.
Co-host
You know what? But this is for a wedding dress.
Host
She's working for it.
Wendy
That's right.
Host
Working hard for it, I
Joanna
should say. I will only be in your way. So I'll go. But I know I'll think of you every step of the way.
Host
Here we go. Big note, big note.
Joanna
And I. Will always love you.
Host
Nicely done, Joanna.
Co-host
Great job. Oh, lord, she's so good.
Joanna
Okay.
Co-host
All right.
Host
Can somebody stop her?
Co-host
She's like, I got the stage now.
Host
Yeah. The. Does she know that you don't have. You can stop
Joanna
hear you right here with me, Joanna.
Host
Nicely done.
Co-host
Joanna fulfilled all her tasks.
Host
I think she earned it.
Wendy
Yes, absolutely.
Co-host
Well done, Joanna.
Host
Hey, Joanna. Who's going in with you?
Joanna
My mom is here.
Host
Hi.
Joanna
And my maid of honor fell asleep, so I told her she better get down here as soon as possible.
Host
Or you could probably find a new maid of honor.
Joanna
I could.
Co-host
Yes.
Host
I would look into that.
Co-host
That's true.
Host
All right. Congratulations.
Joanna
Thank you.
Host
You're wel. You're welcome. Good job. The bird show.

This year's girls trip to Telluride was the best. We one upped ourselves with my Sapphire Preferred card. And with 5 times points on Chase Travel plus 3 times points on vacation homes with top brands. We got this incredible cabin.
Wendy
It was a mansion.

And with three times the points on dining. We ordered a wagyu steak dinner and

that pistachio gelato was too good.
Guest
So where should we go next year?
Wendy
I've got ideas.

Episode Theme:
This episode dives into the hilarious (and occasionally mortifying) challenges Joanna, the Bert Show’s phone screener, must complete to earn early access to the iconic Filene’s Basement “Running of the Brides”—an opportunity to score her dream wedding dress at a fraction of the price. The Bert Show cast brings plenty of laughs, camaraderie, and heartfelt moments as Joanna works through her final and most daunting challenge: singing Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” in front of a live audience.
Over the week, Joanna was given escalating challenges by the show’s hosts to prove her commitment (and entertain the listeners!):
[02:28] Co-host: “She did that [stand-up] very successfully.”
[02:36] Wendy: “Her brothers picked out childhood pictures… they were very cute.”
[02:55] Joanna: Introduces the concept of “ipod singing,” where the singer only hears the music but the audience hears only the vocals—cringe!
[03:17] Joanna (jokingly blaming): “I’m not responsible.”
The episode balances humor, empathy, and just the right dose of public embarrassment, with the Bert Show crew providing encouragement (and some gentle ribbing) as Joanna “works” for her ticket to the biggest bridal bargain event in town. Joanna’s willingness to laugh at herself and fully embrace each challenge endears her to the listeners and her teammates alike. It’s classic Bert Show: authentic, silly, and big-hearted.
