The Bird show let's get Brandy on here. I've heard this before like and I think we used to pick up from time to time like neighbors just really, really quickly on our baby monitor. Like if you're on the same frequency from time to time you can hear like some squelching going in and coming out, but you can't really make it out. At least I never could. Apparently Brandy could. Hey Brandy. Good morning. You're on Q100.
Caller Brandy
Hey, morning guys. Good morning.
Host
How are you today?
Caller Brandy
Well, I'm a new mom so I'm exhausted. But I just have a word of warning for new moms here. I'm the mother of a beautiful two month old and so okay, so it was really nice the other day and our neighbors were sitting outside having a glass of wine. And we noticed. We went over. You know, we have very little. Little mommy and daddy time. Just parents, you know, just people time, you know? So we were like, we'll take the baby. Baby monitor over there. Baby was sound asleep. It was great. We'll have a glass of wine. You know, I don't think I've drank in, like, a year and a half, so it was wonderful. And so the baby usually naps during the day, right? And then at night, she has a bassinet in our bedroom. You know, she's waking up every three hours, whatever. So as it gets longer, she'll go into her room. So we took the baby monitor with us, right? Like responsible parents. We opened the window anyway so we could kind of hear her if she started to cry. And so we decided that we wanted more mommy and daddy time, if you know what I mean. And the baby's in our room, so we end up in the baby's room. Fine, right? Baby's not there. Why does she care? Right?
Co-host 1
Except there's a big gap. Like the last time we left the
Caller Brandy
baby monitor at the neighbor. At our neighbor's house.
Host
And when they came home from mommy and daddy time, the neighbors could hear what they're doing
Co-host 1
because the baby's in
Caller TJ
the same room

to the baby room.
Caller Brandy
Baby's room, yeah. So the next day, our neighbor's like, so I just wanted to return your. You really mad at her?
Co-host 1
Thanks.
Caller Brandy
And she, like, kind of snickered. I was just like. I was like, oh. I mean, you know, of course. I'm like, oh, thanks. Oh, my God. What does that mean?
Host
Now they had the choice to either turn that thing down or turn it up. Sounds to me like.
Co-host 1
What do you think they did it?
Host
Sounds to me like they turned it on.
Spinquest Advertiser
What would you do in that situation?
Co-host 1
Well, I'd listen for you.
Caller Brandy
I'm, like, mortified.
Host
Yeah. I had heard that. That. Yeah. I mean, this is.
Caller Brandy
I mean, should we. Should we have proof that we've done it? I mean, now, you know, the whole world knows we've either done it once.
Host
You know, it's a little uncomfortable, but it's nothing you can't get by.
Co-host 1
Well, I think the whole world figured out you did it once. Once the baby came along.
Caller TJ
Right.
Caller Brandy
I'm just shocked.
Co-host 1
You can hear it from a neighbor's house that baby monitors travel that, like, that far away from the house.
Host
Oh, yeah.
Co-host 1
I had no idea.
Host
Some of them you can hear, like, hundreds of feet away. And if you're in a small community where you got those, like, cookie cutter houses that are real close to each other, there would be no problem at all.
Caller Brandy
So.
Co-host 1
See, I would have no idea about that. Yeah. Remember, like, Bert's been in here before with the baby monitor and just left the kids at home when Stacy's out of town. Yeah.
Host
And they're a quarter mile away down the street. They're in different cities.
Co-host 1
Oh, that's amazing.
Host
We have gone over to our neighbor Mike's house and been at his pool with our baby monitor while Hollis is sleeping. And It's, I don't know, 70ft, 80ft away, something like that.
Caller Brandy
Yeah.
Co-host 1
Oh, yeah. It's got a good range because you think it has to go through walls and stuff. Like, if the baby's. If you're. Like, the baby's room is way upstairs and you're down in the basement or something, you still need to be able to hear it. So does that. Do you become more relaxed with that as you have more kids? Like, would you guys have done that with your first.
Host
We did do it with the first.
Co-host 1
You did.
Host
Okay, we did.
Co-host 1
I just wonder if that. Like, the first time you do something like that, if you're like, oh, no.
Host
We were pretty crazy. Like, when we went. We would all go on vacations together when Hayden was just an infant, and we would purposely stay in hotel rooms that were close enough to the beach, to where Stacy and I could still be on the beach, but close enough to our room to where we could have the monitor in the room, and if anything happened, we just walk off the beach, and there you are.
Caller Brandy
Right.
Host
So, yeah, we were pretty relaxed about that kind of thing immediately.
Co-host 1
Are you freaked out, though, about the. Obviously, you're not gonna leave your baby monitor anywhere like this girl did. But, like, the frequency thing, like, what if you're just like.
Host
I've heard conversations on there before, but they're so faint that you really can't hear what's going on.
Co-host 1
But are you mindful of that? Like, if you're in your baby's room and you're about to talk crap about a neighbor or somebody? No, because I'd be freaked out.
Caller Brandy
No.
Host
It doesn't even cross your mind.
Co-host 1
I get nervous talking crap in this building because I'm convinced there's microphones hidden in the ceiling tiles.
Caller Brandy
All right, friends, we have picked up our neighbors. Well, it must be some neighbor I've never met. It's a teenager or something. And is it the cordless? Is the cordless phones that you can Pick up.
Host
I'm not really sure. I mean, frequencies are frequencies and I think if you're just on the same one, it doesn't matter really what you're
Caller Brandy
using because it was a teenager, it was like not the most interesting thing I've ever heard.
Host
That's gonna go one of two ways also. It's either gonna be very, very interesting or very.
Caller Brandy
I can't wait to have one in my own.
Host
All right, Brandi, thanks a lot for calling. Appreciate it.
Caller Brandy
Okay, guys, that's a word of warning. Seriously, thank you.
Host
Here's tj. Similar situation. Hey, tj, what's going on?
Caller TJ
Hey, what's going on, guys? Yeah, actually, when we were first time parents, we woke up to somebody yelling and we thought we were being robbed. And we had to call our father in law and have him drive past the house to see if anyone was here. And I was creeping up the stairs in my underwear thinking we're being robbed. It was just us picking up our neighbor's cell phone conversation on the baby monitor, yelling at his ex wife.
Co-host 1
Oh, really?
Caller Brandy
Oh, no way.
Caller TJ
Yeah.
Co-host 1
I have a question.
Caller TJ
It scared the daylights out of us. We really thought we were being robbed. I was creeping around my underwear and my bat. I was going, hold on, honey, hold on, hold on. I hear him talking. I hear him talking. Somebody's here.
Co-host 1
Somebody's here. Tj, at what point did you or your wife make the decision that calling your wife's father to drive by the house while you were home to protect it rather than you just taking care of the problem? How did that work?
Caller TJ
Well, listen, they live two houses down from us.
Host
Oh.
Caller TJ
And I was already creeping through the house and my wife was seconds away from calling 911. And I was like, no, honey, don't call 911 yet. Just call your father. I know he's up. See if anyone's here. See if anyone's outside.
Host
He wanted to stay inside to see while his father in law was outside to see if anybody was outside the house.
Caller TJ
Listen, I figured if he got me, somebody had to flank him. He's a big man. I figured somebody had to save me.
Host
Yeah, it can't happen, man. I mean, those baby monitors, they're on the same frequency. We had one call that dropped out and it was a very similar situation as TJ's. They used to hear their neighbors arguing all the time.
Caller TJ
Wow. I might go.
Co-host 1
I don't have a baby monster, but I might just go get a couple baby monitors, line them up on the, on the table for fun.
Caller TJ

This episode dives into the hilariously awkward (and surprisingly common) hazards of baby monitors—how they can inadvertently turn into neighborhood eavesdropping devices and the mortifying moments that can follow. Featuring real listener stories, including a standout call from new mom Brandy, the episode offers a blend of playful banter, parental confessions, and a word to the wise about tech and privacy. As always, The Bert Show team brings their candid and comedic style to the conversation, making it equal parts relatable and entertaining.
[01:31 – 04:52]
New Mom Exhaustion & Desire for ‘Mommy and Daddy Time’:
Brandy, a mother of a two-month-old, recounts her “amazing” brief escape to the neighbor's house, made possible by a baby monitor in the baby’s room.
The Embarrassing Twist:
After some overdue ‘adult time’—in the baby’s room, since the baby was elsewhere—Brandy and her spouse return to find the baby monitor was left at the neighbor’s house, still on.
Hosts’ Reactions:
The cast jokes about what the neighbors did upon realizing what was happening.
Universal Parenting Vulnerabilities:
[04:33 – 06:54]
The Surprising Reach:
The hosts discuss just how far baby monitors can transmit, sometimes “hundreds of feet,” especially in close-knit neighborhoods.
Parenting Habits Over Time:
Host and co-hosts share stories about using monitors while at the neighbor’s pool, or even relaxing on the beach near their hotel, confident in their device's range.
The Eavesdropping Dilemma:
The conversation turns to the risk of unintentionally broadcasting private (and potentially embarrassing) conversations to others on the same frequency.
Other Radio Frequency Anecdotes:
[06:56 – 08:32]
A False Alarm:
TJ shares his own scare—in the early days of parenting, picking up audio that sounded like someone was yelling in their house, leading to them thinking they were being burglarized. Turns out, it was just their baby monitor tuning into a neighbor’s phone call.
Family Involvement:
TJ tells a comedic story about calling his father-in-law to drive by the house (instead of calling 911), while he himself crept through the house in his underwear with a bat.
The Baby Monitor as Neighborhood Gossip Tool:
Co-host jokes about using baby monitors recreationally to eavesdrop:
Brandy’s mortification:
"I'm, like, mortified." – Brandy [04:12]
Host’s reassuring humor:
"You know, it's a little uncomfortable, but it's nothing you can't get by." – Host [04:24]
On the infinite reach of monitors:
"Some of them you can hear, like, hundreds of feet away..." – Host [04:41]
Paranoid co-host:
"I get nervous talking crap in this building because I'm convinced there’s microphones hidden in the ceiling tiles." – Co-host 1 [06:18]
Caller TJ’s comedic self-defense:
"I was creeping around my underwear and my bat...I figured if he got me, somebody had to flank him." – TJ [07:27, 08:12]
