A
Hey, Bible readers. Welcome to April's bonus episode where we'll take some time to review what we've been reading together.
B
But first, as a reminder, no matter when you're listening to this episode, you are exactly where you need to be.
A
That's right, Ms. Tierley. Every day that you're in God's word is a good day day.
B
So let's go. In the last month of reading, we've learned some big words. We've followed along with a big story, and maybe you've even wondered about a big question or two. Ms. Emily what are some of the big words we've learned?
A
Two of the biggest words we learned this month were pagan and eternal words to remember. Pagan is having to do with false gods. Eternal means lasting forever, having no beginning and no end. Understanding the word eternal can help us understand more about the big story of the Bible, the story about who God is, what he's doing, and how much he loves his kids. Let's review where we are in that big story.
B
In the beginning, God sets out to build a relationship with his family. But their sin gets in the way. It hurts that relationship. But God is sovereign and not at all surprised by their sin. In fact, before they even sinned at all, he had a plan in place to restore the relationship that they would hurt by their sin.
A
That's right. And God keeps working out that plan even while they keep on sinning. God makes a covenant with Abraham where God promises to bless him and his family. And God promises to bless every every family on earth through his family.
B
Even though God gives his family so much mercy and grace, their sin still has consequences. For 400 years, they're slaves in Egypt. But God does something big for his family through a man named Moses.
A
God shows his power to the Egyptian Pharaoh through Moses. And finally Pharaoh agrees to let the Israelites go free. They leave Egypt and they make their home in the desert. Even though God rescues his family, they're still sinful.
B
But God is merciful and he gives them rules for living a holy set apart life. There are lots of rules about cleanliness and sacrifices and celebrations and so much more. But these rules are necessary because God is holy and the Israelites are sinful. God wants them to remember who he is and how much he loves them.
A
But instead of remembering, they keep on forgetting. They either get fearful and disobey or they get prideful and disobey. Because they disobey God, they spend 40 years in the wilderness of the desert. They don't get to go into the land. God promised them, but their children do.
B
God raises up a new leader, Joshua, to lead the Israelites into the promised land. Because Joshua listens to God and does what he says. They take the land. Hooray. They divide up the land and spread out by tribe. Then they're supposed to drive out all their enemies, but they don't.
A
And so, just like God warned them would happen, they disobey him and they get further and further away from him. God gives them judges who are like military leaders to lead them. Sometimes the people turn back to God and things go well for them for a while, but then they forget God again and turn back to their sin and wickedness.
B
But there are faithful people in Israel, some from the family of Israel, and some are from pagan nations, people like Ruth and Rahab.
A
God is building a family, and it's a bigger and more beautiful family than they could have imagined. And it's an eternal family.
B
The people decide they want a king, and God gives them one, even though he knows it won't go well. God himself was already their king, so anyone else would be a massive downgrade.
A
They get Saul as their first king, and he is, in fact, a massive downgrade. He makes some really terrible decisions, but soon the people have their eye on someone else, David.
B
So, of course, Saul gets incredibly jealous and decides to kill David.
A
But God has a plan for David and for Israel and for the family he's building.
B
So let's keep reading this big story together tomorrow. It's all pointing us toward Jesus, our savior, who comes to redeem God's people.
A
That's right. And we have time for one big question about the story we've read so far. So here it is, Ms. Terry. Why did God give Israel a human king even though he knew that it
B
wouldn't go well for them to answer that. Let me ask you a question, Ms. Emily. What did you just tell us about David?
A
Well, that God has a plan for him and a plan for Israel and a plan for the family he's building.
B
And God used a human king, a few human kings, to point to that plan. Through David's family line, God gives his family another king, a king that is fully human and fully God, the perfect
A
king and the eternal king, King Jesus.
B
Even when we can't see what he's doing, God is always working out his plan. And those plans bring him glory and bring us joy. Of course his plans bring us joy, because he's where the joy is.
