Hey, Bible readers, I'm Ms. Emily, and this is the Bible recap for kids. Today's Bible verse 1 Chronicles 11:3 says they anointed David king of Israel, just as the Lord had promised through Samuel. In Chronicles, we'll often read a story for the second time, but from a different point of view. And here's where we left off in David's story. He's been the king of Judah, one of the 12 tribes, for about seven years. The other 11 tribes said that Saul's son Ishbosheth was their king. But he and his military commander Abner were killed right before that happened. Abner told the other tribes that they should follow David too. So David is finally king over all of Israel, about 15 years after Samuel anointed him. Wow. David wants to move the religious capital of Israel to Jerusalem. But the Jebusites live there. They're pretty confident that no one could possibly breach their walls. But David outsmarts them by going into the city through a water tunnel. The Israelites move the capital to Jerusalem, and David builds his castle there. God also gives David victory over the Philistines, who fight him when they realize he wasn't ever really on their team. David obeys God in battle, but his personal life is a different story. He starts collecting new wives and mistresses, even though God forbids it. God makes people great for his sake. David's greatness as king of Israel comes from God. God is the creator of David's life and the holder of his kingship. David's victories and his flaws point us forward to our eternal God and perfect king who makes people great not only for our good, but also for the sake of his glory. He's where the joy is.
