God tells Jonah to go to Nineveh and rebuke or express sharp disapproval of the people there for their wickedness. But Jonah is proud and arrogant and he hates the Ninevites. They don't look like him or talk like him, and he doesn't want them to be God's kids. So instead of following God's instructions, Jonah gets on a boat heading in the opposite direction. God sends a huge storm. It's so big that even the sailors, who would have sailed through many storms before, were terrified. Jonah tells the sailors the storm came because he's running from God. They throw Jonah overboard and the sea calms. Then the sailors offer sacrifice to God. God sends a big fish to swallow Jonah whole. And for three days and nights, Jonah lives in his belly.
