Hey, Bible readers, I'm Ms. Emily, and this is the Bible recap for kids. Today's Bible verse Isaiah 4, 5, 6 says, the Lord will provide a canopy of cloud during the day and smoke and flaming fire at night, covering the glorious land. It will be a shelter from daytime heat and a hiding place from storms and rain. Isaiah, the prophet who speaks messages from God, is writing to southern Judah, mostly telling them about what's been happening in northern Israel. God is dealing with their sins, and they've been attacked by the Assyrian army. Isaiah warns southern Judah that they should repent of their own sins or the same thing will happen to them. When Israel is being attacked by Assyria, God tells them that he doesn't want their offerings. Now, God hasn't changed his mind about offerings. He knows that their hearts aren't honest even if they sacrifice an animal. He tells everyone what a changed heart should look like. Because of Assyria's victory, Judah gets scared. They stop listening to God and start making themselves feel safe by making friends with the enemy nation around them. Isaiah tells them that their safety isn't real because it can only be found in God. Today, God is our refuge. In today's readings, there were lots of pictures of Israel's time in the wilderness. He was with them there in a fire and a cloud. And even though they're not in the wilderness anymore, he's with them still. He's our refuge, a safe place to live. No matter where we are, God is with us. He makes his home with his people. He's where the joy is.
