Hey, Bible readers, I'm Ms. Emily and this is the Bible recap for kids. Today's Bible verse. In Exodus 16:23, Moses says to the leaders of the Israelites, this is what the Lord commanded. Tomorrow will be a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for the Lord. Only 45 days after God delivered them. The Israelites start grumbling and complaining. They wish for the days that they were slaves because the food was better. Come on, Israel. Don't you remember that you were slaves? But instead of punishing the Israelites for not trusting him, God makes himself known to them through the cloud they've been following. He promises to give them bread in the morning and meat at night. God tells them to gather food every day except on the Sabbath, when they should rest. Sabbath. That's a good word to remember. Word to remember. The Sabbath is the seventh day of the week set aside for rest and worship. God also tells Moses to hit a rock with his staff. And when he does, we. Water pours out. God wants his people to rest and he wants them to trust that he will provide everything they need. When an enemy army attacks the Israelites, Moses tells a man named Joshua to put together an army. God brings Joshua's army victory. Moses builds an altar and gives God a new name. The Lord is my banner. A banner is like a flag, something visible that marks a victory. So this name means not only that God is victorious, but also that Moses wants everyone to know it. God gives rest. The Israelites aren't used to days off, so when God tells them to rest, they may feel confused. Rest reminds us that we can't work our way to God. God gives himself to us as a gift and nothing we could ever do would make us worthy of that gift. As we learn to rest in him, we'll realize more and more that he's where the joy is. This was a big week for learning. If only we had some way to summarize it all and wrap it all into one big P. Oh wait, we do. Be sure to check out our seven day Roundup episode where we will zoom out on each week's reading. This helps us to remember all that we've learned and we'll even talk about how we can apply what we've learned. We can't wait to see you there.
