16, Moses says, if you don't personally go with us, don't make us leave this place. How will anyone know that you look favorably on me, on me and your people, if you don't go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth. God tells Moses it's time for the people to start moving toward Canaan, the promised land, but that God won't be going with them. God's people had hurt him deeply with their sin, and he tells Moses he'll send his angel to go with them instead of himself. Moses talks to God just like we talk to our friends. And he begs God to come with them or to let them stay there with him. He remembers the promises God made to his people and tells God that they need him there with them to guide them. And God agrees to go. Moses asks God to show him his glory, which is a word to remember, word to remember. Glory is magnificence, splendor, and beauty. So on top of Mount Sinai, God does just that. He shows Moses his glory. God rewrites the ten Commandments on new tablets and gives them to Moses. Moses goes back down to the people, and his face is actually shining from being with the Lord. Wow. The people are afraid. So Moses covers himself with a veil. He reminds the people of God's laws and collects an offering to provide for the needs of the tabernacle. Today, God gives us our identity and he makes us his. Moses knew that if God didn't go with them, they would sin again and again. When we live like God is with us, we become who he really made us to be. God uses his people to show others his power and his kindness and of course, his joy. Because he's where the joy is.
