Hey, Bible readers, I'm Ms. Emily and this is the Bible recap for kids.
B
Today's bible verse, Deuteronomy 23:5 says, but the Lord your God refused to listen to Balaam. He turned the intended curse into a blessing because the Lord your God loves you. Moses gives a lot of laws today that have to do with adults relationships with each other. It's important to remember two things when we think about these laws. First, the Israelites lived during a very different time from ours, with very different cultural traditions. And second, if God gives a law about something like slavery, for example, it doesn't mean that he approves of that thing. He is talking to a specific group of people who are living at a specific time. So he's giving them laws that apply to the situations they're already in. As we've seen since the beginning, God's heart is for the vulnerable, and he's both powerful and kind. Some of God's laws have to do with mixing things together. Different kinds of seeds, plowing animals, and fabrics in a piece of clothing. These serve practical purposes, but they also remind the Israelites that they themselves are separate from those around them, set apart as God's people. God reverses the future we earned. When King Balak tries to get Balaam to curse the Israelites, the curse turned into a blessing. Because of our sin, we deserve the curse. But because Jesus redeemed us from the curse, we get his blessing. God turned the Israelites curse into a blessing, and he turns our curse into a blessing too.
