Today we meet four of Israel's judges and they're pretty good at their job. Because the Israelites worshiped other gods, they became slaves for eight years and then they turned back to God and God gives them Othniel. He's a military leader and a judge and God gives him victory. For 40 years there is peace. But then can you guess what happens next, Bible readers? Israelites rebel against God again and their enemies take back Jericho. They become servants again, this time for 18 years. They cry to God for rescue and he gives them their second judge, Ehud. He's left handed, which at that time meant people thought something was wrong with you. But God uses Ehud's left hand to defeat King Eglon and the Israelites have peace for any 80 years. Then Shamgar, who is probably a Canaanite turned into a Yahweh worshiper, leads them to victory and more peace. Until you guessed it, the Israelites fall into sin again. And after 20 more years of slavery for Israel, God raises up Deborah. She's the judge who honors God the most. She and her military leader named Barak sing a song of praise when God gives them the victory Today by God. God uses unlikely people to accomplish his purposes. So far in Judges he's used a left handed man, a Canaanite and a woman. All of those leaders would have been surprising choices back then. He uses unlikely people not only so that his power will be seen, but also so that his heart for the vulnerable will be seen. These victory stories with unlikely leaders bring God glory and they bring us joy.
