A
Hey, Bible readers. Welcome to February's bonus episode where we'll take some time to review what we've been reading together.
B
But first, a reminder. No matter when you're watching or listening to this episode, you're right on time, right? Ms. Emily?
A
Yes, every day that you're in God's word is a good day.
B
So let's get going. In the last month of reading, we've learned some big words. We followed along with a big story. And maybe you've even wondered about a big question or two.
A
What are some of the big words that the Bible readers learned this month?
B
So many good words. But there are two I want to review with you. They're little words with big and important meanings. Holy and atone words to remember.
A
Holy means set apart. Atone means to come are to pay a penalty. Such important words.
B
Now, you already know that the Bible is made up of a lot of small stories, but it's also one big story, the story about who God is and what he's doing and how much he loves his kids.
A
Let's review where we are in that big story.
B
In the very beginning, God sets out to build a relationship with his family. But their sin gets in the way and it hurts that relationship. But God is sovereign and he was not at all surprised by their sin. In fact, before they had even sinned at all, he had a plan in place to restore the relationship that they would hurt by their sin.
A
That's right. And God keeps working out that plan even while they keep on sinning. God makes a covenant with Abraham where God promises to bless him and his family and God promises to bless every on earth through his family.
B
Even though God gives his family so much mercy and grace, their sin still has consequences. For 400 years, they're slaves in Egypt, but God does something big for his family through a man named Moses.
A
God shows his power to the Egyptian Pharaoh through Moses. And finally Pharaoh agrees to let the Israelites go free. They leave Egypt and they make their home in the desert. Even though God rescues his family, they're still sinful.
B
But God is merciful and he gives them rules for living a holy set apart life.
A
There are a lot of rules, but these rules are necessary because God is holy and the Israelites are sinful.
B
And all of these rules about cleanliness and sacrifices and so much more point our eyes forward to the ultimate sacrifice. We aren't there yet in the story, but that ultimate sacrifice is Jesus, our Savior.
A
So stay tuned and let's keep reading the big story together tomorrow before we wrap up.
B
Ms. Emily, do you have a big question from a Bible reader?
A
I do. Why did the Israelites need to make so many sacrifices?
B
That is a big question. So first let's review. Remember that God is holy or set apart and what separates us from him is our sin. To make us right with God, our sins have to be atoned for. And remember, atone means to cover. That means a penalty has to be paid that covers the sin. So the animal sacrifices were God's temporary way of covering the sins of his people?
A
Yes Ms. Taralee God had a plan all along that would replace the animal sacrifices.
B
That's right. An ultimate, once and for all time perfect sacrifice. His son Jesus.
A
So the animal sacrifices in the Old Testament point our eyes forward to the ultimate sacrifice. Jesus.
B
He loves us so much that even though the problem is our sin, he provides the solution. He did it for the Israelites and He does it for us.
A
He's where the joy is.
B
It.
