Researchers say an abundance of animals are prowling around in Florida sewers. According to a study published in the journal Urban Naturalists. Abundance of alligators and nearly three dozen other species Chick use stormwater sewer systems in Gainesville to safely traverse the urban environment. Researchers believe similar species use stormwater sewers in urban areas throughout the state. The study leader, Allen Ivory told the New York Times. It's like something out of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Well, you know what? I'm actually up. I've got a little loft here, and I grabbed. I wanted to feel. This is where I write. This is where I do my vocal sessions. It's my creative space here. So I just grabbed. Over the years, we've been so fortunate to have amassed quite a collection of this. Of this stuff and. But I picked the ones that meant the most to me and brought them up here. I got. I got my original sheet music of I want to hold your hand back there. Got my letter from Stephen Stills over here. So it's. It just. Yeah, just kind of a. Kind of a inspiring place for me.
Tom Griswold
And. Wasn't your dream to want to at least sing with Stephen Stills at some.
Kevin Cronin
Point, dude, it was. You know, my daughter talks about manifestation. You know, how if you think something and imagine it as happening, that it will happen. And. But for me, with, you know, when that first Crosby Stills And Nash record came out, man, I ran to my girlfriend, I bought it, ran to my girlfriend's house and put on Sweet Judy Blue Eyes and listened to it 12 times in a row. And that's where the journey began. It's a long, It's a pretty cool story. I write about it in my book, which I will finish one of these days. But yeah, Stephen and I ended up. I mean, we're friends to this day. I did a gig with him actually with the Jim Ursay collection. I know you're probably familiar with Jim. And he does this cool thing where he brings his memorabilia all around the country. And he's got this amazing band, you know, Kenny Arnoff, Mike Wanchik, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Mike Mills from R.E.M. this great 12 piece band. And he brings, you know, three or four singers out to do to play a few of their hits with the band and, and the last one we did together, Stephen was there and I got to do a duet with him and almost cut my hair in honor of David Crosby. And I was like, you know what? That's it. My bucket list is empty. I'm good. Anything that happens from here on in is just icing on the cake for me.
Tom Griswold
We're speaking with Kevin Cronin, veteran of the band reo. You're going on with a new outfit kind of this summer. It's Sticks in the Kevin Cronin Band Brotherhood of Rock tour. Give me the details on what's happening. I know it's going to be starting up in late May and you're going all over the place. Who else is on the tour now with you?
Kevin Cronin
Well, this the band that is with me. It's a weird thing. Anyone that saw REO Speedwagon anytime since November of 23 knows that it's Dave Amato and Brian Hitt who've been with me for 35 years. Derek Hilland who when Neil Doughty retired, Derek took over on keyboards. He played with Whitesnake and years with Rick Springfield. And then when Bruce went down with serious back issues in November 23, we were so lucky because it was a week before our Vegas residency and we were lucky that Elton John had just retired and his bass player Matt Bissonnet was a friend. He came in and subbed for Bruce for those gigs and you know, there was just a chemistry that happened with the five of us. And so we've been been together ever since. But sadly at the as of December 31st of 24, I kind of got outvoted 2 to 1 that I could not continue touring with the name Mario Speedwagon. And honestly, it's been really difficult. You know, it was devastating and it still kind of is, is, but I'm devastated, but not defeated. And so that same band playing the same songs, just with a new name, it's. If you liked Ario Speedwagon last year, you will like the Kevin Cronin Band and, and, and also check it out. So we're gonna, we decided that we would perform the entire High Infidelity album which we had been doing in Vegas, but we've never done it on a large scale tour and, and our buddies and sticks are going to be performing the Grand Illusion album in its entirety, plus their heads, bunch of our hits. And you know, Tommy Shaw and I have had each other's backs for many, many years and, and I'm really grateful to those guys for having faith in me in the Kevin Cronin Band. You know, with a tour that's booked as Styx, REO Speedwagon, that's, that's a no brainer. You know, that's just, but, but it's. Even though it's this, as I said, same song, same band, it's, you know, without that Ariel Speedwagon name, it's a little bit difficult for people. And, and so, you know, I appreciate you guys having me on because, you know, I'm just trying to reassure the REO Speedwagon fans all over the country that, that, that they can count on me to deliver them the REO Speedwagon experience, even though I can't call it REO Speedwagon anymore. So thank you guys. Of course. This means so much.
Tom Griswold
I have two dumb questions for you. The first one, the first one is sometimes when you were coming up, was it weird being on stage and not holding a guitar ever? Or do you always want to be at a keyboard or a guitar or can you get out there with just a mic and be comfor comfortable? Or was that awkward for you? Is it now? You know what I'm saying?
Kevin Cronin
Yeah, I know exactly what you're saying. Mix. I'm a guitar player. I've been, you know, I started taking guitar lessons when I was 11 years old and, and I was never a lead singer. When I first started, my band was a kind of a harmony band. We were kind of kind of Buffalo Springfield Birds, Moby Grape, that kind of stuff. And when, when Gary Richrath kind of found me by kind of accidentally up in Chicago and invited me to join reo, they were, I mean they were just a powerhouse rock Band, you know, the people around the Midwest especially remember that those, those early albums and, and there were, there were a couple songs where I didn't need to play guitar. So, so I just kind, kind of, you know, took, took the mic and I'm glad there were no videos back then because it was totally awkward. I didn't know what, I didn't know what to do with my hands. It's like, what do I do to standing with my hands in my pockets too? Because the Ariel's original singer, Terry Luttrell was a great blues rock singer and he had the mic stand moves like he did this, had the mic stand spin and all this stuff. And you know, those guys were all, you know, kind of cool beetle boots and tight bell bottom jeans and cool cowboy shirts and stuff. And I'm, I'm standing there in a pair of brown corduroy pants and Hush Puppy shoes. They, they looked like rock stars. I looked like I was late for poetry class.
Tom Griswold
I also, I understand. And this, please don't take this the wrong way. You have been taking singing lessons recently. So you. And I've heard you say in another interview, you're actually singing better now than you were 30 years ago.
Kevin Cronin
You know, I am proud of the fact that I am working with a vocal coach. My son Shane was accepted to the USC pop vocal program and they, they accept four or five singers a year. And Shane, I should be so lucky to be able to sing like this kid. He's, he's amazing. But after his first semester, he's like, dad, my v, my vocal professor, Jeffrey Allen is amazing. You got to work with him, he'll change your life. And I'm like, yeah, right, I'm 69 years old. I'm going to change my life. Right? But one thing led to another and I swear to God, it occurred to me after Shane talked to me a couple of times over over a year and a half span that for his childhood and young adulthood, there was several times where I've said, you know, told him something, given him some advice, and you know, maybe he didn't quite understand what I was saying, maybe he didn't like what I was saying. But I would always say, Shane, trust, trust me, I love you. And anything I'm telling you comes out of a place of love. And it occurred to me that this was my chance to show him that same respect. And that's kind of what got me to take my first lesson. And it's been almost four years now. And you're absolutely right, it has changed My life, my son was right. You know, it changed my whole way of thinking about singing. It's hard to explain, but I really understand the instrument better now. I had so many. I had so many things wrong, you know, some things I just had the opposite of what I was supposed to be doing. So it's been a long process, but I work with Jeffrey two or three times a week and it has changed my life. I feel better than ever, and I'm singing better than ever. And, you know, my feeling is that, you know, you can't become complacent. You know, I know too many people in my, you know, peers of mine who feel like they've had success and they kind of start getting complacent, kind of just, you know, riding on their path, you know, accomplishments. And I know Tommy Shaw and I share the same type of feeling that you gotta continue to raise the bar. You gotta keep growing, you gotta keep getting better. And I know Sticks feels that way, Tommy feels that way and I feel that way. And you know, I want to be lifted up and I want to lift the people around me. And if that stops happening, then I'm.
Pat Godwin
That.

That's not good for me. And. And so I gotta, I gotta keep moving forward.
Tom Griswold
Now. The, the. Do you have any, like, weird exercises you do now while you're backstage? Oh, yes. Little scales.
Kevin Cronin
Sounds like. It sounds like a, like a, a. A medium sized animal being strangled in, in my. If you're standing outside my dressing room before a show, there's, it's, it's. But it, but that's all part of it. There's trying to think what the, what the weirdest one is. And I probably can't even do it because it's so early in the morning here, but there's one where I go. I start really low.

I mean, weird stuff like, you.
Pat Godwin
Know, call me crazy. I think you have a hit on your head that's got a real hook.
Josh Arnold
That's got a real hook to it.
Tom Griswold
Do, do you have you at, at some point with your instructor, taken reo songs, your songs, and said, okay, I'm going to sing this one for you. Give me some hints on how to make it work a little better and breathe right, et cetera, et cetera?
Kevin Cronin
Absolutely. We've, you know, you know, we have a, you know, we start every session with scales and just to warm up, stretch the vocal cords, get the diaphragm working. And then we get right into, into my songs and, and we, you know, we've. Over the past four Years, we've. We've. We've torn them all apart. And, you know, there's certain. It's a weird thing, there are certain consonants that. That kind of close down the area of your throat where vocal tone is enhanced. And, you know, I used to be infamous for the way I pronounced the R consonant. You know. You know, I'd always be forever, you know, that thing. And that's like, exactly what you're not supposed to do. And I blame the late, great Danny Folk, because back when REO first started, Danny and us were the first management clients of a man who would go on to become the most powerful and, I would argue, probably the smartest man in the music business, Irving Azoff, who's a downstate Illinois boy. And I was down in Nashville recording REO T W O. And down the street, Danny Fogelberg was recording Home Free Free, his first album. And anybody listening, if you haven't heard Fogelberg, Home Free, that was his first album. It is such a great album. I mean, cover to cover, it's just amazing. But. But he used to really kind of overdo the R's. And I would kind of sneak into his sessions and. Because I just love that kind of music so much. They had that beautiful vocal harmony. He was. He was basically the Midwest answer to Jackson Brown and James Taylor, people like that. And. And so I blame Danny.
Tom Griswold

We'll be playing the whole High Infidelity album, every track in sequence, plus, you know, all the REO hits, you know, Time for Me to fly Roll with the changes can't fight this Feeling, you know, of course, the. The High Infidelity songs, Keep On Loving you, Take it on the Run, Etc, Riding the Storm. It's like I say, it's. It's the same songs, same band, new name.

In a Treasure island resort in Welsh, Minnesota, which is about. I think it's about a half hour south of Minneapolis. So it's basically the Minneapolis area. And it's gonna be. It's gonna be awesome, man. We are. We're chomping at the bit, you know. You know, like I say, Dave and Brian have been with me for 35 years. And these guys, you know, I mean, Brian hit is like the ageless wonder of this band. And you know these guys. Brian sits at his practice pad and plays for a couple hours every night. You know Derek Hilland who's on keyboards in the practice room. I hear him just playing scales, working on his solos and his parts. Matt Bissonnette is just a beast. Great singer, amazing bass player. And of course, Dave Amato, also with me for 35 years. He's an amazing guitar player. The best guy to be in a band with ever. Got the. The whole crew stuck with me. So it really feels. I really feel comfortable. I feel at home and you know, it's a shame that. That things kind of got messy, you know, for. At the end of REO Speedwagon here. It was never my intention for REO Speedwagon to end. I always wanted to keep it going. I assumed that I would be able to keep it going. But, you know, life has its way of throwing knuckleballs at you and you gotta learn how to hit them. And so I'm just inviting anyone that wants that REO Speedwagon experience of high energy, positive energy and just a good time. Come out and see the Kevin Cronin and come out and see us this summer with sticks. And I'm shamelessly promoting here, but I believe in this so strongly.

Well, that's. No, you know what? Actually, actually there are a lot of people, a lot of my peers that are. Have taken a teleprompter on tour and I refuse to do that. That I refuse to use a teleprompter. I refuse to use any pre recorded tracks if what, whatever, whatever I sing. That's what you're going to hear and you know, and I, I would rather, I'd rather, you know, am I going to hit every single note perfectly? No, of course not. I'm, I'm a human being. But I, I would rather like when I watched the Saturday Night Live 50th anniversary, you know, Paul Simon, Paul McCartney. These guys came out there. Did they sound the same as they did did 30 years ago? No, but I would rather hear them the way they are now and, and have it be real, man. And you know, rock and roll is meant to be. It's meant to be real. It's meant to be, to be natural. It's meant to be. You know, I, I can't get into the whole, you know, sing into a pre recorded track thing. I just, I will never do that. I will, I will sing, I'll sing live until I can no longer do it.

Well, you can do it acapella. You just, you just proved it. Kevin, we gotta run.
