This is an I Heart podcast.
Bobby Bones
Nourishes like a smoothie and sizzles like a smash burger. Easy to pick up and hard to put down. Made from plants and grills like beef. See, it's not. Or it's. And. And that's what I love about impossible. Just this weekend, a couple impossible burgers. Put them on the grill. Boom. Felt like I was having a cheat meal without the feeling of the guilt of a cheat meal. It's not just burgers. They got hot dogs, chicken. Everything you need for your summer menu. Look for the impossible red packaging at your local grocery store today. I knew I wanted to obey and.
Unknown
Submit, but I didn't fully grasp for the rest of my life what that meant for my heart. Podcasts and Rococo Punch. This is the Turning River Road. In the woods of Minnesota, a cult leader married himself to 10 girls and forced them into a secret life of abuse. But in 2014, the youngest escaped. Listen to the Turning river road on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Bobby Bones
The Girlfriends is back with a new season, and this time I'm telling you the story of Kelly Harnett. Kelly spent over a decade in prison for a murder she says she didn't commit. As she fought for her freedom, she taught herself the law. He goes, oh God. Harnett, jailhouse lawyer. And became a beacon of hope for the women locked up alongside her. You're supposed to have your faith in God, but I had nothing but faith in her. I think I was put here to.
Janae
Save souls by getting people out of prison.
Bobby Bones
The Girlfriends, jailhouse lawyer. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. This is a podcast called 25 Whistles. Talking first and they all wear a whistle. Yeah, it's stupid, but what did you expect? It's a PODC called 25 Whistles.
Eddie
25 Whistles.
Bobby Bones
Hey, Hitty. Thank you. I won a lot of money on Sha winning. Let's go.
Eddie
Good job.
Bobby Bones
That's hard. Cuz he was a big favorite.
Unknown
Well, no, not really.
Eddie
Not early on.
Bobby Bones
So. And I didn't bet it early early. So I mean I half cheated if there's such thing as cheating. So after day one, he was a few behind because he didn't lead after the first day.
Eddie
Correct.
Bobby Bones
And so I was like, oh, he's very much not only in striking. Right. He could run away with this thing with a good day. And so I put a few hundred bucks on him and he was still at like plus 310 or something. Okay. So I made around thousand bucks.
Eddie
I think at that time, the whole Ireland Rory thing was like. And there's just no way that Rory's not gonna win this. It's in Ireland. And I think that kind of made all those odds keep Scheffler down a little bit. So. Dude, that's. That's a good hit.
Bobby Bones
Well, it's also the odds aren't based on who Vegas thinks will win. They're based on people betting.
Eddie
Yeah, that's what I mean. Like, I mean, I bet on Roy.
Bobby Bones
Everyone liked the storyline more. Yeah. Yeah. I do have the video here of Jordan Spieth talking about Scottie. And some people were upset about it, but Jordan and Scotty were college teammates and really good friends to Texas.
Eddie
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
So I'm gonna play this clip here. And here you go. He doesn't care to be a superstar.
Eddie
He's not transcending the game like Tiger did.
Unknown
He's not bringing it to non golf audience necessari.
Bobby Bones
He doesn't want to go. Do you know, the stuff that a.
Unknown
Lot of us go do corporately, Anything like that.
Eddie
He just wants to get away from.
Unknown
The game and separate the two. Because I know that he at one.
Bobby Bones
Time felt he was too much, that he was taking it with him.
Unknown
And whenever he made that switch, I.
Bobby Bones
Don'T know when it was.
Unknown
But he has hobbies. He's always with his family. They're always doing stuff. So I think it's more so the difference in personality from any other superstar that you've seen in modern era and maybe any sport.
Bobby Bones
I think he could talk freely because he was his friend. Yeah. And I think everything he said was true, but he wasn't saying as a dig. He was like, he doesn't transcend because he doesn't want to.
Eddie
Correct.
Bobby Bones
But if you didn't know and you just heard that clip, you would definitely think he was taking shots at him. Like, if you didn't have the context of their relationship, if he didn't have the context of who Scheffler is, even Scheffler doing the press conference last week, being like, you know, this stuff doesn't matter. Like, you win a major, you feel good for a couple minutes, you move on, and then he goes out and dominates another major. Crazy. It's pretty awesome. His kid being out there at the end. That's pretty cool. The picture was cool. So I have that video, and then I have one other one I wanted to play for you guys. And this one is after the wnba all Star Game. And at the table was Kelsey Plum. They're such haters of Caitlin Clark for no reason. They're so jealous of Caitlin Clark for no reason. And again, the only reason that Jen pop and I would consider me. Gen pop cares about the WNBA at all is because of Caitlyn Clark.
Eddie
Who's Kelsey Plum?
Bobby Bones
She was married to Aaron Waller. Darren Waller, who's unretired, by the way.
Eddie
Tight end.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
She's also. That's funny. That's where my mind goes. Like, where would I know her from most? But she's also like a good WBA player. She's a long time veteran. Yeah. She's been around.
Eddie
She's done.
Bobby Bones
So she's. She's kind of. She is weird. Like a little. She's off. Like, she just likes to pick. She was the one, too, who told the guy asking for the autographs. Yeah. Had like an issue with them. And I get it, but sign the crap and move on. You're the. They can't handle their sport is getting popular. It's like all them getting upset when Shane Gillis was making the jokes. When your sport gets popular, it gets so popular that it's into the pop culture universe. People start to be fun or not be fun and take shots. Like, that's your platform. Raising up. More people are seeing you so people can get happy with you, mad at you, upset at you. That's what's happening. They can't handle it. And so Kelsey Plum has been a hater of Caitlin Clark before. Again, people that weren't in the WNBA wouldn't care about the WNBA if it wasn't for Caitlin Clark. Because they only care about Angel Reese because of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese's beefs. Yep. So that being said, this is after the WNBA All Star Game, and there were two teams, and this is Kelsey Plumb talking about the shirts they were wearing that said, pay us what we're worth or whatever the shirt said, or we're not getting paid. I forget what the shirt said. But what's funny was the leagues lost like 40 million bucks a year. And so hilarious. People on the Internet were fine. Well, I guess every player owes them about $300,000 if they lost 40 million. You owe us. Yeah. Pay us what you owe us. Where the shirts they were wearing. They're in the middle of a, like a contract negotiation. TV rights are new. CBA stuff. Yeah. Here we go. This is them at the table after the All Star Game. That was a very powerful moment. We didn't. At least as players we didn't know that that was going to happen. So I think it was kind of like a genuine surprise. But the T shirt just united front was determined this morning that we had a meeting for. And you know, not to tattletale, but zero members of Team Clark were very present for that. But no, we were just. We had a very. That really needed to be mentioned. I'm trying to make a situation light. Okay. But. But yeah, no, I think it was just all of us getting on the same page for the game. We wanted to do something that was just united and collective. And so one of the teams was Team Clark. Team Caitlin Clark, because she liked the highest vote getter, like the two highest vote getters, I think had a team named after them. Okay. But. Shut up. Yeah. You don't need to say who wasn't there whenever you were talking about what shirt was worn. Pay us. What? She's such a hater. Even Sabrina Ionescu, she stepped in. She felt weird. That was unnecessary. Yep.
Eddie
It feels like high school.
Bobby Bones
And Sabrina should be the one most upset about Caitlin Clark because she was the three point bomber until Caitlyn Clark came. Yes. Yes. Yeah, dude, it ain't good. That's. It's weird. Girls are mean, man. There's all this jealousy for what is making them more famous. Yeah, that. Yeah, I was laughing about it yesterday. I was like, the shirt should say something about Caitlin Clark. Like, thank you, Caitlin Clark. Yeah, big thanks, cc.
Eddie
Yeah, that'd be nice.
Bobby Bones
And the league has gotten better. It's still hard to watch sometimes. Like when they miss, they miss. Bad. It's bad. And I have the WNBA Sunday ticket.
Eddie
That's what it is.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I watch it. I watch the wnba. I got that frigging league pass. WNBA league pass because of Caitlin Clark. And I want to watch the fever fair. What losers. They're losers. A rising tide lifts all ships and collect your paychecks because that's the collective bargaining agreement that they're doing right now. And with the TV rights are going to get paid more. They are going to get paid more. Yeah. You know why they're in such a power position right now? Caitlin Clark. That's it. Because the general interest has risen 100, 200%. And I say that based on the percentage of ticket prices, they're having to move to bigger arenas when Caitlin Clark comes. So other players are catching. They're getting the fame by association, and then we can see how good they are. Yeah. The worst thing for them right now is her being hurt. Yeah. Oh, yeah. The all Star Game tickets fell, like, 60%. Yeah. Because she didn't play in it. Yep. All right. Yeah. Yeah. That was the whole thing. There we go. Don't be haters, man. And I love being a hater. And even. Even then, I'm like, don't be a hater on that. Like, you're biting the hand that feeds you. Yeah. It's just weird to me. Eddie and I played our first round of golf in the tournament. Oh, you didn't know. You didn't know it yet, right? Oh, no, he actually told me. Oh, he actually told me.
Unknown
Yeah.
Eddie
Yeah, I told him.
Bobby Bones
So I was waiting for this. Eddie and I. Well, it was close at the end. I only won by a stroke, so I'm only up one stroke going into day two of the tournament. I was like 15ft out, and it freaking choked in the water. But we both choked in different holes. I think I shot at 84.
Eddie
84. I shot 85.
Bobby Bones
And we played. No moving the ball.
Eddie
No, man. Very fair.
Bobby Bones
And very few gimmes. Eddie was so hell bent on not playing gimmes. But unless it was super close. How close? Like, we're talking two, three. Oh, a foot. Like.
Eddie
Like, really? You're not gonna miss it?
Bobby Bones
Yeah, like, you're not gonna miss it. Okay. Based on. And not everything was a gimme.
Eddie
No, even.
Bobby Bones
Even normal gimmes, we wouldn't do gimmes. He was so against gimmes.
Eddie
And then. But then Kevin, he would walk up to the ball and be like, you're not gonna give it to me? Like, what are we gonna do here? And I. And I would purposely be like, I'm still thinking. And I'd put. You're good. You can pick it up.
Unknown
Dang.
Bobby Bones
So you guys are playing mind games, too.
Eddie
Well, yeah. That's. Bob.
Bobby Bones
Did you talk a lot of crap? Yeah, it's true. No, I didn't talk any crap at all. Eddie was the one talking all the crap. No, even Tom, who was playing with us, was like, eddie, I don't even know you as a competitor right now.
Eddie
There were times I win the ball, go out of bounds, I'd be like, I wasn't.
Bobby Bones
I was focused. And I had a crazy headache at the start of the round.
Eddie
Like, sinus dude. Didn't matter. Hey, Tiger. Tiger uses putter as a cane. Dude, he's not making excuses.
Bobby Bones
I did not play the first five holes. I was like, double, double. And I went like 10 holes one over, and, like, really put it on it. But Eddie was leading the first six or seven holes, but I still was.
Eddie
Making bogeys when he was making doubles. Like, man, that was my time to really gain some, like, space. And I never could take advantage of that.
Bobby Bones
So at the end, I only won by. Sorry, day one, I'm only up by one stroke. It was actually very close. Way closer than he should be upset about. Was it the final hole? What was going into that?
Unknown
Were you up by.
Bobby Bones
I was up like three.
Eddie
He was up by three strokes.
Bobby Bones
And I hit it 15ft out into the water. Like I. Yeah, stupid.
Eddie
And then I made the par putt, which is like huge.
Bobby Bones
The green is on the water and I frigging shanked a chip right in the freight. Right in the water. It was so stupid. That's.
Eddie
Yeah, but I mean, this is dramatic though. It's a good, it's going to be a good tournament. Everyone's watching.
Bobby Bones
Nobody's watching. But if you didn't hear, if Eddie beats me in the four day tournament, I give him 500 doll if I be daddy. He has to wear a Superman costume.
Eddie
And go to the house or something.
Bobby Bones
On the street for two hours holding a sign, dang. And then he has to grill my wife and I dinner in his superintendent.
Eddie
Costume in my costume. Weird.
Bobby Bones
It is. Yeah. We like that. We talked about it. We're both into it. Diego Pavia is gonna. We're. Take a break. Mike. Yes, sir. Come back with Diego. Okay. Cool. Diego Pavia, who really became a hero and a darling after Vanderbilt beat Alabama last year.
Eddie
That was awesome.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. We'll do 45 minutes in studio with Diego Pavia next time.

Unknown
Appreciate you, Bobby. Thanks for having me.
Bobby Bones
What are media days like when you're the guy?
Unknown
Oh, I don't know if I'm the guy, you know.
Bobby Bones
Well, you're the guy. Okay, fair enough. I would say you trying to be the guy. Definitely one of the faces of the league. I would say that because you had a wonderful season last year. One of the guys. What's it like to be one of the faces? To be one of the guys when you go to that thing?
Unknown
Yeah, I would. It was a cool experience for sure. But every time I, like someone brought something up like that, I was just thinking to myself, like, I want way more, you know, for me, my teammates, a lot of us not. Are not on, like, draft boards. I mean, hype is just hype at the end of the day, but when you look at the numbers, I feel like I'm the best in the country. And that's just off numbers. There's two things that don't lie. Numbers and film. So, you know, I just got to bring it every single Saturday this upcoming year, and I'll be on everyone's draft board, and I'll be ready to go to the league.
Bobby Bones
Did you go to the SEC media days last year and represent Vanderbilt?
Unknown
No.
Bobby Bones
So this was the first year you did that?
Unknown
Yeah, yeah. Last year I barely came into Vanderbilt like, a year and a month and a half ago.
Bobby Bones
So you were late in.
Unknown
Yeah, I was late. And I had to do 21 credits at new Mexico State to graduate to come into Vanderbilt.
Bobby Bones
Was that because it was Vanderbilt or because you were transferring?
Unknown
Just generally, yeah, it was because it was Vanderbilt. They don't accept, like, credits from, I.
Bobby Bones
Guess, like, junior college.
Unknown
Well, I went junior college, then New Mexico State, and then I had to graduate because I was just older, I guess. And then they don't really take junior or senior transfers at Vanderbilt because the academics also.
Bobby Bones
You had to have. You had to graduate.
Unknown
Yeah, yeah, I had to graduate.
Bobby Bones
We were talking to Coach Lee last year and he was talking about, you know, it's. It's hard to get into Vanderbilt.
Unknown
Oh, yeah.
Bobby Bones
And to recruit players, it's got to be a special type of player. I didn't realize that you. It sounds like juniors and seniors can't transfer and you have to have graduated to come in. So that puts a lot of stress on you then at school. Right. Like, to get all that done. For sure.
Unknown
I mean, I was taking 21 credits. I was still working out, you know, two, three times a day, still going to practice, watching them practice and then. But it was all online, so that was cool.
Bobby Bones
Whenever I tried to do, like, online, when I got a ticket, I spent way less time invested in being on because it was. It was, like, easily available. So I did terrible at taking, like, driver's ed online.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. So I feel like if I took online classes, I would not pay attention.
Unknown
Well, you should have just typed it into ChatGPT. Would have got it done.
Bobby Bones
That's true. Yeah.
Eddie
Different times.
Unknown
Not saying I do that, not saying I do that. I just know a few students.
Bobby Bones
What's Vandy like to go to class? I'm assuming you're going to class.
Unknown
Oh yeah. You meet a lot of interesting kids at class. They want to like basically own the world, you know, or someone like, like their parents are just really interesting or they just tell you their background. And that's what I like doing. I like learning about people and then building relationships like that. And so I met a few people just like in the hallways and stuff who are just interesting, you know, their parents or something are high up or they're from Nashville, they own some like real estate and. But I really like the students at Vanderbilt.
Bobby Bones
Do you walk around and constantly get asked for selfies?
Unknown
More towards the end of the year than beginning for sure.
Bobby Bones
Because football season is on everyone's mind.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. That's cool.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Can you go online classes now?
Unknown
So I have an all online major right now.
Bobby Bones
Oh yeah, that's yeah. Awesome.
Unknown
So I'm really bought into football.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Did they make sure. Do most guys do that?
Unknown
No, actually not from Vanderbilt.
Bobby Bones
Really?
Unknown
We got a lot of smart kids on our roster. That's what makes. That's what makes us elite.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Unknown
You know.
Bobby Bones
Why did you choose Vanderbilt?
Unknown
Well, I chose it because at New Mexico State, my head coach, offensive coordinator, safeties coach, quarterback coach, let me think, who else? Running back coach. They took Vanderbilt, picked up about six or seven of our coaches and then they took like four of our players. And then so I was like, shoot, I might as well join them, you know. And then once Coach Kill really went to Vanderbilt, that's when I was like, okay, I'm bought in.
Bobby Bones
Whenever you come over or you're thinking about coming over, are they like, hey Diego, there's a good shot, you can play or is it just you just believe in yourself and go. Not really knowing, I guess not knowing, not how to say it, but not really having an understanding of where you're going to fit in the depth chart.
Unknown
Well, there was a quarterback battle going in. I kind of scouted that going into it, but the starter had just left so I knew the spot was open and there wasn't going to be no favoritism or anything like that. And all I asked for going in is because I know there's a lot of politics in the SEC and like these big conferences. So I told him, I'll come if you promise me that it's a 5050 shot and the better person will play.
Bobby Bones
So you didn't even ask for the guarantee to start. You just wanted a fair shot to win the job.
Unknown
I just wanted a fair shot to win the job.
Bobby Bones
What was the scheme difference offensively from New Mexico to here? Same thing because the coaches came. There were a lot of it were running the same terminology and everything.
Unknown
Same terminology. There was a little bit of a twist because of our offensive line coach. He coached like Lamar Jackson at Louisville and so we took a slight little twist with that. And so I had to learn a little bit, but it wasn't too much learning that I had to do.
Bobby Bones
Did you feel that when you came in you were equal to the guy immediately and I don't know who you were in the quarterback battle with. Did you guys start at the same place or did you come in a little behind and you had to catch up?
Unknown
I would say I was probably ahead just because I was at New Mexico State for a year and a half with the offensive coordinator and stuff.
Bobby Bones
So you knew what he was saying. Yeah, what you're expected.
Unknown
And I was in the background. So I like practice. I would go watch practice every single day in the spring because I couldn't practice. And like on seven. On seven and in team reps, I would take my drop back when he said hike, I would take my drop back. I'd go through my reads and I'd throw the. I'd fake throw the ball before like the quarterback would do it.
Bobby Bones
So it's like being on the on deck circle and timing pitches. Yep, you're there taking cuts, just, you know, timing it.
Unknown
Just mental reps. And when did you.
Bobby Bones
Feel like you guys. And I hope this comes off as super respectful, but Vanderbilt has a history and a culture of being a very smart school that occasionally has blips of success with the football program. I think Coach Lee has really brought in a culture of success. I think Coach Franklin did the same thing. But other than those two, it's been difficult for Vanderbilt to have any sustained success. When did you start to feel like, hey, we're actually going to be pretty good?
Unknown
Well, first things first. Like it was hard to mesh with the team because I was only there like a month and a half before we played our first game. So I felt like Virginia Tech was when like, okay, we have a chance to be good. And then when we lost to Missouri, they were like the number six or fifth ranked team in the country.
Bobby Bones
That was like an overtime, a field goal, double overtime.
Unknown
We lost by a field goal and we could have won it. I still blame that one on me. We could have won it. And then after that everyone was like, man, we could do this. And then Next week we had to buy. Then the following week we played Bama and we beat him.
Bobby Bones
That game was wild. I think most people started watching a different game and about third quarter, the entire country was on that on you guys game.
Unknown
Well, I bet it was pretty hype. You know, it was a back and forth battle.
Bobby Bones
Again, the ticker, we probably have most of us, it's unfair for me because I know coach Lee a little bit, but I think most of America was watching the ticker and the longer you guys stayed with Bama, it was like, oh, we'll check back on that game. We'll check back. About the third quarter, all my friends were texting me, oh, we're dialed in. We're watching this. That game. Did you feel like at the beginning your guys knew you guys could match up with them or was it after a few series you felt like, oh, we can compete with these guys. How did you guys start that game?
Unknown
I feel like everyone came in. Maybe some guys didn't come in. You know, not as confident because of the past and they've been on the team. But I feel like for the most part, the starters and the twos were pretty hyped about going in and playing Bama. Obviously we just came off a close loss to Missouri, so they wanted to see how we were going to bounce back and that was the biggest thing. And then once we punched first and then we got another pick six, it was like, okay, just keep the ball rolling.
Bobby Bones
And what does coach Lee or your offensive coordinator say at halftime? Because I don't know what you guys need halftime in order to continue to believe in yourself.
Unknown
Right? I think we're up like 2310. And the message was keep the foot on the gas. And then I remember our old lineman, big glow. He was walking out, he was like, I'm not walking out this without a W. And so that was just the mentality. Just any way possible, just find a win.
Bobby Bones
So I think a lot of teams will get caught up in trying to hold on to the lead more so than continuing to try to win. And you guys went out with that mindset of, hey, we're going to keep going and we're going to be aggressive. Even if it comes back, we'd rather be aggressive than not.
Unknown
Yeah, for sure. Well, we knew they were going to still put up points. You know, they're. They're talented on offense and they will be this upcoming year. So it takes a lot of points to be a team like Alabama.
Bobby Bones
Is that a game where you can watch tape leading up to it and have confidence that you can compete.
Unknown
Yeah, for sure. I kind of knew they weren't gonna change it up a lot. They're gonna play a lot of man coverage, and so I knew what I was gonna kind of get.
Bobby Bones
Did that feel disrespectful? They were gonna play a lot of man coverage. I think I'd be disrespected. Like, you think you can just cover us one on one?
Unknown
100%. I actually have a funny story for you that I'll tell you after off. Mike.
Bobby Bones
I love those. Yeah. I think if. If they're playing man the whole game, I think I'm feeling a bit disrespected for sure.
Unknown
That's if you. You actually think you're better than me. You know what I mean? And so that's. That's a sign of disrespect for sure. But you have to play man in the sec and because you have to bring blitzes, quarterbacks are too good to just. If you just let them sit back there, they're going to find someone.
Bobby Bones
You have to play man some, right?
Unknown
Not all the time.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. If you're man enough all game, that means you think one on one, you're better than, like, you can line up and shut down my wide receiver every play. I think I would be a little irritated. I probably throw nine interceptions. You didn't. I think I throw nine interceptions doing that. But I think I. I would take that personally if they're running man defense on me the whole time. Did they change their scheme on you mid game and did you feel it?
Unknown
No, I think they. They started to play more man. Actually, even in third and long situation, it was man. And we're going to just.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, yeah.
Unknown
But we have Eli's tower, so it was different.
Bobby Bones
And so what are you like in the huddle?
Unknown
Oh, I'm. I'm real serious in the huddle. Like, once it's business. Once that clock starts, it's all business from there on out. And then I try to just get everyone prep, give everyone confidence to go into the next play and just succeed. If someone misses a block or something, you know, I'm smacking him on his ass and just tell him, hey, you got it.
Bobby Bones
Why do your guys believe in you?
Unknown
I think they just see that, you know, I'm not going to go out without a fight. Like, I want to win more than anything else in life. Like, this is all I know. All I know is football. Without football, I don't know what I.
Bobby Bones
Would do at this Part of the year. Because football season is still 50, 50 days away or so, right?
Unknown
I think it's less than 50 days, about 40 some.
Bobby Bones
Where are you physically? Are you. Do you, like, work and then taper down before the season, or is it just an ascent and then you're, you know, your gas is fully hit?
Unknown
Yeah, we'll probably. Well, fall camp starts in about two weeks. We'll probably go hard this week. Next week we'll probably taper down a little bit going into fall camp and then blast off. And then probably a week before our first game, we'll probably taper off a little bit.
Bobby Bones
What will you do leading into this season that was different than last season since you have one under your belt now?
Unknown
I'll do more recovery in the training room, you know, and then one thing I need to do is hurry up my feet, and that's something that I'm working on. And then once I do those two things and I stay healthy the whole year, it'll be the funnest year for Vanderbilt.
Bobby Bones
When you say hurry up your feet, what are you doing specifically? You talking about drills? Are you talking.
Unknown
Right, like some footwork drills? More quarterback. Quarterback. Ish drills for my feet.
Bobby Bones
Like old school ladder type stuff. Like, because Rocky, they had the Russian who would do the. The technology stuff, and then Rocky be out fighting the chicken.
Unknown
Right, right.
Bobby Bones
What version are you doing?
Unknown
Oh, yeah, I remember he was trying to catch that chicken. No, I'm doing more like bag work. Going over the bags, going through the bags. Having. One thing that we did last year is Cordae and this, our other D tackle, Zayden Wood. I would just. They would take one second and they would just free rush me and I would just try to escape. It was basically scramble drill and then find a receiver.
Bobby Bones
Do you like before game to be extremely hype or. Because we've had other guys come in, like MMA fighters, they don't want to be hyped. They want to have good adrenaline, but they don't want to be hyped because then they don't react and think the same. They want to be as calm as possible. Where are you before the game starts?
Unknown
Oh, I'm hyped. I'm jumping up and down. I'm ready to go, you know, and then sometimes what's kind of like embarrassing, though, is sometimes when your energy is too high and then you're like starting to come down and focus, you'll catch like these yawns that are like really kind of embarrassing and you don't want no One to see us. You're like hitting like one of these or something like that.
Bobby Bones
And you brought in the plaque here with part of the goalposts. That's pretty cool.
Unknown
Oh, you like it?
Bobby Bones
I love it. That's awesome.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
So how many of these did you guys grab and save from the goal post?
Unknown
Oh, I don't know. That's a, that's a Vanderbilt question that.
Bobby Bones
I mean that's the first thing I would have done is saved it, shaved it all down and then sold it all for parts. Like a stripping. Yeah, that's exactly what I would have done. What about like the Vanderbilt fans? Like again, if you. The culture of Vanderbilt has been a lot of smart kids, but Coach Franklin and Coach Lee are the two that have really brought in that winning culture. I don't think that they know to love football consistently. I feel like you've brought that energy to the team. Are more the Vanderbilt fans, you know, showing Support in your DMs, like rooting for you than before last year?
Unknown
Yeah, for sure. Obviously I don't think they like knew of me what I was capable of last year. And I feel like, you know, they're ready to see a show. Obviously that comes with winning. The more we win, the more they show up. But one thing that I do want to change a Vanderbilt is last year students were trying to come in. We ran out of student tickets. And I just think that should never.
Bobby Bones
Happen when they also rushed the field there. But they rushed it very nice. They calmly and walked down the stairs. That was one of the real kinder, gentler stadium rushes I've ever seen.
Unknown
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Bobby Bones
I was like, all right, we're in.
Unknown
The cop was probably like, oh, go ahead.
Bobby Bones
You know, what are the facilities like at Vanderbilt? And I would like for you to walk back to both schools because I would assume each time was a big come up and it felt different.
Unknown
Yeah. When I got to. So from coming from juco, we worked out in a tent. Literally it was squat racks. Like if you walked out on the, on concrete and you were working out in the parking lot, we just put squat racks on them. And it was a, a dome, kinda kind of like Arizona States Indoor, but it was just concrete. And we just, we squatted in there, we benched in there.
Bobby Bones
And then it sounds like prison. I'll be honest with you. That's what it kind of what it sounds like the prison yard with like a little tent over the top.
Unknown
Right, right. It was a military school. And the only way that you were able to get like an extra workout in is they had like the pull up bars, the dip bars. And so at Nimi, you really couldn't be up at a certain time. And I would like sneak out of my room 4:30 in the morning and I'm like trying to like creep on the wall so no one would see me. And I would go and like work out from like probably, like probably get there at 4:45, work out till about 6 and then I had or like 5:30 and then come back, take a quick shower and be in formation by like 5:45.
Bobby Bones
Because it was a military institute.
Unknown
Yeah. And then when. When I went to New Mexico State, it was like, oh my God, this is heaven. You know, and obviously, you know, they had a really, actually a really good weight room there, but there was like no indoor, no grass field. And then I come to Vanderbilt and I'm like, they're serving steak every single day, chicken every single day. I'm like, what? Like, what's going on?
Bobby Bones
You know, the nutrition's a big difference.
Unknown
Oh, the biggest difference for sure.
Bobby Bones
And so you can get whatever food you want whenever.
Unknown
Yeah. Shrimp, there's sometimes lobsters. I'm not. That's what I was. I had. I had the same face.
Bobby Bones
That's crazy.
Unknown
Yeah. No, and then the desserts are great too.
Bobby Bones
So they just have like chefs, cooks, always cooking food, always snacks.
Unknown
Oh, dude. They have like a thing from this wall to this wall filled with. What's your favorite snack?
Bobby Bones
I mean, I love a lot of fruits. I love a lot of cookies. So I'm a big fruit and cookies guy. Probably.
Unknown
Yeah, they got that. Yeah, they got gushers.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Unknown
What's those? Climb bars or something.
Bobby Bones
And those are anytime one in the morning. Eight in the morning.
Unknown
Eight. Yeah, all day.
Bobby Bones
Dude.
Eddie
They wouldn't have anything left. We were there.
Bobby Bones
Dude. I know. We can't even have a break room.
Unknown
Oh, you should have saw my sister. So my sister came down. Well, we took her to New Mexico State. Obviously there was like just bagels and stuff. We go over here, she asked for a bag and she's like walking around making sure no one looks just like putting snacks in the bag.
Bobby Bones
We went to Auburn and worked out with the basketball team. That's what we did in the room. We got. They had like a trail mix with M and M's. That's the highest fire. Yeah. So we took those.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And we were like putting them in our bag. So like, I understand what your sister was doing. Yeah, yeah.
Unknown
No, the stuff's expensive too.
Bobby Bones
Unlimited Anything is awesome.
Unknown
Oh, yeah. I remember I asked for like a protein shake and they took me to the back and there was like stacked to the top like it was Costco, you know. And I remember I took like a protein box just home and I was like, I'm the man.
Bobby Bones
I would feel the same way.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
I'm seeing previews for the show on Netflix and I'm a big SEC guy. I grew up in sec, grew up in Arkansas, so big Arkansas guy. I would imagine because you guys had such a good season last year that you're prominently in it. Have you seen it?
Unknown
I've seen the trailer. But from the people that I talked to at Netflix, they said that they really liked our part in the, in the show. It was like, probably the most interesting is what they said.
Bobby Bones
Do you know when they're there? Did you know when they were there?
Unknown
I just think that they were. Well, they started there the week before Bama, leading up to Bama, and then they caught like four or five games. They went to the Kentucky game, Tennessee game, Auburn. So maybe four or five games that they were there. And then they went to my house as well in Albuquerque.
Bobby Bones
Do they do mic you up, you know, talk to you? You do like stand up interviews or is it just like they're just watching like fly on the wall?
Unknown
No, they would do like one on one interviews, pull you into the room and do stuff like that.
Bobby Bones
Was anyone like, hey, they can't put in what you don't say, so make sure what you say, everything you say. Because I did a reality show once and when I wasn't working, because I did Dancing with the Stars when I wasn't dancing, I kept my mouth shut because I knew they could take anything and make it whatever they wanted to do. They could switch the narrative, do whatever they wanted.
Unknown
Right.
Bobby Bones
Did anybody give you kind of a, like, tip, like everything you say can be used in this?
Unknown
Yeah, they did say that. I feel like there's some, maybe some nut job stuff that I said in there that maybe they can use in two ways in a game.
Bobby Bones
It doesn't matter. That's cool. Because you're being you.
Unknown
Right, right, right.
Bobby Bones
It's the interview stuff that could get you in trouble.
Unknown
Yeah, exactly. And I hope, I hope they didn't use it in a bad way, but I don't think they did. I think, you know, the people that we worked with were pretty good.
Bobby Bones
That's pretty cool. They were there for the Bama game though.
Unknown
Yeah, that was fun. They got to see my family too. And anyone who knows my family, they're. They're nut jobs.
Bobby Bones
Okay, I'm gonna follow up on that. Your family, why are they so awesome?
Unknown
Well, I have two older brothers, a younger sister, and my mom. And then for the Bama game, like, all, my mom has 13 brothers and sisters. And obviously, we got a lot of friends and stuff, and so literally, like, 73 people came or something like that. And, I mean, it was a blast. And they had the camera on them before, so I'm pretty excited to see, like, my brothers before the game. But it'll be interesting. That Netflix show.
Eddie
His brother's got a lot of airtime. I remember. Were they wearing overalls or something?
Unknown
Yeah, my oldest brother wears the overall. The cowboy hat, chain, I would think, after he's ripped, too.
Eddie
I remember that.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Older, you say?
Unknown
Yeah, yeah.
Bobby Bones
Do you play ball?
Unknown
Naia?
Bobby Bones
So after a game like that or any big win, I think it would be difficult to get focused quickly because you win on Saturday. Sunday's big day of celebrating, even though you're supposed to turn the page. But then Monday, you're back around other people, and all they want to do is tell you, that's amazing. You're doing interviews based on that. How hard is it to get back on track after a massive win?
Unknown
Yeah, I remember we were playing Kentucky. They just came off a big win of Ole Miss, and so I knew I had to get on. On track quick. So what I did that week, I knew was gonna be very busy. I studied a lot that Sunday night, and then Monday we were off. So Monday morning, I was studying a lot, just at home and stuff, so I kind of knocked that all out, and I found that useful, you know, And I'm probably gonna do it this year a lot, but Sunday, my. My brothers literally opened the bar and closed the bar that day until they had to fly back Monday morning.
Bobby Bones
They were celebrating for you in your place. Yeah, Yeah.
Unknown
I remember they came to practice. I was like, hey, well, I need a ride. You know, they have my car and stuff. I'm, hey, I need a ride. Can you guys come pick me up? They're freaking hammered coming into practice. Smell like beer. I'm, like, in the back, you know, I'm trying to pay attention. They're, like, dapping me up, Dapping coach, kill coach, back up. And then one of the guys was, hey, like, we need you guys to calm down just a little bit, please. So they. They, like, sat on this side, and every time we go to the sideline, they were just. They're just hyped. You know they're excited and they're proud of the team.

Unknown
Oh, shoot. So junior, junior year, I had to actually play JV because of the transfer rule. And I would say I probably had maybe six touchdowns in the half. And then, like, I just sat off, like, the rest of the day.
Bobby Bones
So they made you had to play jv and then you just dominated?
Unknown
Yeah.
Eddie
That's awesome.
Unknown
Yeah, they. I played freshman. I played varsity. Sophomore year, I played varsity. And then my junior year, I transferred and they made me sit down and play jv.
Bobby Bones
The whole year?
Unknown
Yeah, the whole year.
Bobby Bones
Was that boring?
Unknown
Oh, it was bad. You know, like, it was. There was, like, a crazy play. I was playing running back, receiver. I was just. I just, like, told him, hey, just throw me the ball real quick. And, like, we had this other kid who played quarterback, too, and if they drew up the route for him, I'll be like, hey, switch. You play quarterback real quick. And I would run the route. And so I would run the route. But there was one time, like, I took a handoff and I'm running up the left side, I curve it back to midway, and then, like, some kid facemasked me, I come back and score a touchdown. And that was the day I had, like, six touchdowns in half. And so I just, like, sat on the sideline and it got really boring. I wish I was able to play varsity. Maybe that affected why I didn't get any offers. But. But I'm also from New Mexico, you know.
Bobby Bones
How was your senior year then?
Unknown
Oh, I ended up getting hurt the first game, and I had to sit out for, like, six games. But we were 11 and 1 and we lost in the playoffs, like, 49 to 56.
Bobby Bones
So you missed your whole junior year? Well, miss it. You had to play junior varsity, and then you missed a big part of your senior year because of injury.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
So is that why you didn't get the offers? At least any Division one offers?
Unknown
No, I felt like because towards the end, I was still playing football and I was still playing really good.
Bobby Bones
Were you playing quarterback?
Unknown
Yeah. And no, I don't think just. No one wanted a 5, 10, 511 quarterback. They didn't believe in me.
Bobby Bones
So why did you choose to go to. What did you. How'd you. What do you call it?
Unknown
New Mexico Military? Nimmy.
Bobby Bones
Nimmy? Yeah. Why did you choose Nimmy?
Unknown
Oh, my brother chose it for me. Really? I was thinking about maybe walking on to, like, a powerhouse. Maybe like Oklahoma. Obviously, Baker Mayfield was a walk on twice.
Bobby Bones
Tech and Oklahoma.
Unknown
Exactly. And so I was thinking of doing, like, maybe one of those and it was like literally a week before. And then the Nimi offensive coordinator, Coach Kaiser, came into my school and was like, hey, you need to come to Nimi. Like, this is. It'll work out well for you. We've had five Division 1 quarterbacks in three years. It'll be great. Like, you'll have a great opportunity. So we kind of. And that was when that Netflix show last Chance you came out. And so JUCO was big at the time and everyone was taking looks at it. So I was thinking just, all right, I'm gonna go juco for a year and then I'll transfer D1. And then so when juco went 6 and 4 and then we went to the next year, we went to the national championship. Won the national championship, and then that's how I ended up in New Mexico State.
Bobby Bones
Did you start to get other offers other than New Mexico State, like Jeff?
Unknown
Oh, I had. I'll tell you when the offers came in. So I switched my Twitter. Twitter has all the offers. Like, that's how you get offered nowadays. And on my Twitter, I said, I'm from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I changed it to Tampa, Florida. And then once I changed it, literally a week after I started getting offers and started talking to schools, it was.
Bobby Bones
Crazy because you said you're a Florida player and they disrespected the Florida players more.
Unknown
I guess that's how it works, you know.
Bobby Bones
Are you sure they just didn't get put on to you around the same time I switched it?
Unknown
Hey, I don't know. But once I switched it, it was like, oh, now these coaches want to.
Bobby Bones
Talk to me, you know, what's the expectation this season? Is it a win loss expectation? Is it a show up me competitive expectation?
Unknown
It's a win, win, win the national championship. That's the expectation for Vanderbilt football.
Bobby Bones
Do you feel like you're so much further ahead now than you were last year as a team? Like what you know and what you're able to do Offensively for sure.
Unknown
Offensively as a team, yes, too. Just like last year, like, I only came in a month and a half before and I was focused on one, myself to win the job, and then two, I was just trying to be around the guys, trying to, you know, know everyone's name. And it was hard because they didn't know my signals. They didn't know the signals of the offense, they didn't know some plays in the offense. So we had to kind of keep it really, really basic and go in with those basic plays. Because the offensive Coordinator was only there for a semester, you know, and so that was really hard at first. But now that everyone knows everything, I mean, we'll shoot up to the moon.
Bobby Bones
Were people hitting you up after last season to transfer to other schools?
Unknown
Well, after I got my year there was some talks for sure. But I knew I was going to stay at Vanderbilt. I knew where I wanted to be. I want to, you know, finish something that I started.
Bobby Bones
How do you feel about the transfer portal, just in general?
Unknown
Yeah, I think it's a good thing and I feel like sometimes it can be used in a, in a not bad way, but just not in the way it should be used. But I enjoyed the players that come out of the portal. You know, some of the. Like Eli at myself, I wouldn't be able to be here if it wasn't for the portal.
Bobby Bones
I feel like one, maybe two. And I think that's where it will eventually be, where it's not a transfer every listen, a coach can leave all he wants. So I think it's only fair that a player gets to leave too. Especially if the coach leave. Especially so. I'm very pro players making money, I'm very pro players getting to transfer because that's real life. I could leave this job and go to a different job. I'm under contract, but I could quit. And so I'm very much, I'm very portal friendly. But I wonder if or how you felt about it. You could leave and go for, in five years, five different schools. Do you feel like that's a bit excessive?
Unknown
For sure. I think once you're doing that, I think coaches should really realize that, you know, maybe you're not who you say you are. The reason why I left is because I'm a loyal person and I followed coach Kill and my office coordinator wherever they've been.
Bobby Bones
Also, whenever you went to juco, that was the idea of going, right. Division one school. Are most kids there doing that like they're at juco so they can move out?
Unknown
Yeah, that's the whole plan. Juco's only a two year thing max.
Bobby Bones
And is that communicated by the coaches too? Like, we know why you're here. We're gonna try to get you there.
Unknown
Right. So juco coaches are trying to get out too. So that's, that's what makes it great is like okay, because I came in with a four star and the four star was projected to start over me. And so when the, when they realized the four star wasn't as good as me, the office coordinator had to play Me, because he's trying to get out too, you know, so that's why I really like Juco.
Bobby Bones
You were a three star.
Unknown
No, I was a no star.
Bobby Bones
You were a no star?
Unknown
I was a negative star.
Bobby Bones
What sports did you play?
Unknown
I wrestled and played football.
Bobby Bones
You weren't a negative star. Okay. Is that a real thing?
Unknown
So they have you ranked as you wrestled? Wrestled, played football, and then I played baseball for two years.
Bobby Bones
Which sport were you the best at?
Unknown
People thought I was the best at wrestling, but I believe that I. I just loved football so much.
Bobby Bones
You love football more?
Unknown
Yeah, way more.
Bobby Bones
Could you have wrestled in college?
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Could you play baseball in college?
Unknown
If I would have worked at it, yeah.
Bobby Bones
What coaches had the most impact on your career?
Unknown
Jerry Kill.
Bobby Bones
Why? What's special about him?
Unknown
Oh, he's hard hat, lunch pill. He's just different. Like, you just talk to him and he just realizes that you realize that he would never. He's never lied to me. Even at New Mexico State, I was going through a bad time because I wasn't in the starting lineup. We were one in five, and it just sucked being one of five. Like, losing just. Is just terrible. And I was like, hey, like, I want to help the team. I want to come back. I want to go to a bowl game. Like, how can I step on the field again? And he told me, just, you know, stop turning the ball over, get better in my reads. And literally, once I stopped turning the ball over and got better my reads, he put me back in the starting lineup. And like, he told the people over there, hey, play this kid. You know, just let him be. Just let him play. And so once that happened and he gave me another chance, it was blast off to the moon. But I respect Coach Kill because he's never lied to me.
Bobby Bones
There have been times where if I were playing a, like a celebrity golf tournament, we're playing a big course that I can play as a video game. I'll get on and play the video game. Or I have a simulator in my house. Or I get on and look at the course.
Unknown
Yeah, yeah.
Bobby Bones
Do you get on. Can you get on college football? Or do you have the. Like that. Jaden Daniels was famous for even doing stuff in the simulator. Do you have any. Do you have the ability to do that at all? Like, look ahead.
Unknown
Oh, well, we watch film. Like, so say we play Kentucky. We watch film already in the Kentucky stadium, but you don't realize what it is until you actually play in that environment.
Bobby Bones
What do you mean in the stadium?
Unknown
Like, once. Once you're in it once you're there. Like, sometimes, like, Auburn's debt perception is kind of different than Kentucky's because it just, like, goes up higher and stuff on the. On the walls. But.
Bobby Bones
So I don't know what you're saying. On the walls.
Unknown
Like, like, like, like they don't they.
Bobby Bones
Digitally put a room around you?
Unknown
No, no. Like, this is like when you step into the arena.
Bobby Bones
Okay. In real life.
Unknown
In real. This is real life.
Bobby Bones
Got it.
Unknown
Auburn holds, like 104,000. Kentucky doesn't hold as much. I don't know how much they hold, but it's like a whole extra layer, you know, that goes up. So, like, the depth perception is a little bit off.
Bobby Bones
Could you play College Football 26, though, and diagnose or, like, look at coverages they're putting in? Go. Okay, what would I do here? What would I do there?
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Have you played with yourself?
Unknown
I've only got to play once, and that was at the media days.
Bobby Bones
Can you call every defense, though, even. Even if you're not good with your fingers on the sticks? Could you be. Could you go, okay, they're gonna blitz safety. They're, you know, obviously. So we'll look at the hook here.
Unknown
Yeah, I always do that. But sometimes it's the video games different than real life. And so that's why sometimes it's kind of cracked. But I also like to mess around on the video game. Just throw one on one jump balls to Eli.
Bobby Bones
Well, that's what you guys are doing in jv, chunking balls that he widen me up.
Unknown
I tried to get him to widen me out how Cam Newton did.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Unknown
At Auburn. But Eli's like, man, I ain't throwing a jump ball to no 5' 9 Mexican.
Bobby Bones
What quarterback do you watch or did you watch as a kid that inspired you?
Unknown
Johnny Manziel, he was cold. He's a. That guy is just a different athlete.
Bobby Bones
Has he reached out to you at all?
Unknown
We talked a few times. He's a real cool dude. He's just. When I watch his tape, too, he's just. He's wired different. That's what I really like about him.
Eddie
Eddie, you enjoy Nashville? Like, I always feel like, you know, you all these players go to different schools or whatever, but they don't really. Don't you working, do you Working out all the time. You're getting. Trying to get better all the time. Do you get to enjoy the town that you live in, which is pretty cool.
Unknown
Yeah, I would. You know, obviously, we're known for, like, that country music vibe, Broadway. So sometimes maybe I enjoyed it too much last year, where I need to take a kick back, but I've had my fair share down Broadway and. And at losers and stuff like that. So this year, I'm gonna chill back. I'm gonna just, you know, it's grind mode. This is the last dance. But I got to meet some cool people too. Like, maybe, like, Theo Vaughn. Yeah, that guy's really. He's a jokester, and he does not lose character.
Eddie
How did you meet him?
Unknown
He was at the Bama game, and then after, he invited me to one of his shows, and I couldn't go because my sister had a game. And then we just connected from there and just. We've had a good time.
Bobby Bones
He's interesting.
Unknown
Oh, yeah. He's a jokester and a half.
Bobby Bones
We were sitting at dinner once, and he was by himself, and I went up. I was like, hey, Theo. He's like, hey.
Unknown
He was by himself.
Bobby Bones
He's by himself. And he hadn't ordered food yet, but he came over and sat with us and for, like, 20 minutes until his food arrived.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And, like, as soon as he sat down, I'm not even gonna say in character, he was just who I thought he was.
Unknown
Yeah. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
He was just like, oh, he was freaking Theo Vaughn at the table and just was. Was really funny.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
But in that way of like, is this even real?
Unknown
No, exactly.
Bobby Bones
It's like, is he playing?
Eddie
And since then, they didn't know each other.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, didn't know him. He was like, hey, I watch your YouTube. And I was like, dude, I watch your stuff too. And so he's like, do you care if I come and sit with you? That's what he said. And I was like, no, come on over. And so he sat with us for probably 20 minutes. But then I've seen him since we were at Arete here in town, you know, doing IV and stuff. And he comes in and sits right down by me, goes, I wanted to buy your old house. Didn't say hello, didn't say, we haven't seen each other in months. And for, like, 20 minutes, he did the Theo Vaughn thing. But I think that's just him now.
Unknown
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Because I wondered at first, like, is he just. Yeah, but it's been so consistent that I feel like that's just him.
Unknown
Yeah, he's bro. He makes me laugh every time I see that guy. I remember my. We walked in, he was getting an iv. What's that place called?
Bobby Bones
Arete.
Unknown
Yeah, it's right there by the mall. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Bobby Bones
And us athletes know all about. Don't worry about us.
Unknown
And you and I walk in and he's like in the back room on his computer doing, like a little thing. And I told my brother, hey, act super weird, like you're deaf or something. Or, like, just act like you're deaf, blind, and act like you don't know English, you know? And he, like, walks in and he, like, acts like he's like a germaphobe. And he was just like getting one of the dudes. He was like, what's up, man? And he's like trying to, like, dap him up. And he's like, is your guy good? You know, but he's never loses character.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I think it's his real self.
Unknown
Yeah, he's a really good person, though. He treats me really well.
Bobby Bones
I've seen him treat people wonderfully. Like, he's always super kind. We were. I remember he sat down. He's from Louisiana, I'm from Arkansas. And we sat down and he's like, you know, I've been to Arkansas before. And I was like, cool, that's awesome. I could tell he was going, he's gonna tell a story. He said, we used to go up there in turkey hunt. He said, you have a turkey on? I said, yeah, a little bit. He said, that stuff ain't fair. And I said, why, what's up? Because we'd be in camp, we'd hunt for like six, seven hours through the morning, and then we'd go back and, you know, we didn't kill any turkeys. So we put our guns away, we got dressed in our normal clothes, got in the truck and drove out. He goes, well, my buddy saw a turkey and said, no, we got to get out. So he got out and shot, and he killed the turkey from the truck. He's like, no, the game's over. You don't get to go up to the fourth quarter and go back and throw another pass. He was like. I felt like that was cheating. Like, we said, game over. They came, and so it was like this whole eight minute monologue that wasn't planned but was so funny. And it was exactly what, like, he does on his podcast on stage and.
Unknown
Right. Yeah, yeah. And the tone, he does it too. He, like, he's so good at telling stories. He's. He. Yeah, he's elite at what he does physically.
Bobby Bones
You feel good right now?
Unknown
Yeah, I feel really good. This is probably the best I felt since the end of season. I was kind of beat up after The Kentucky game, I got hurt, but now I feel really good.
Bobby Bones
Do you have to not throw too much right now?
Unknown
Oh, you're as far as, as far as arm carry part of it.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Like are you, how is your arm? Is it in shape right now or do you wait to get it into perfect shape like before the season starts?
Unknown
Yeah, I'm putting like some oil on it, you know, get it greased up. But I don't throw too many practice passes at practice. Once we go into fall camp, probably like the second week is when it'll pick up and then it'll die down and then once season hits, we'll be ready to go.
Bobby Bones
Will you ice your arm after a game like a pitcher?
Unknown
Oh, no.
Bobby Bones
If you've thrown 40 balls, yeah, I've.
Unknown
Only thrown 40 balls about four times in my career.
Bobby Bones
Most of the JV games, one give to himself.
Unknown
But yeah, I'll like, I'll hop in a little ice or something. That always does a trick.
Bobby Bones
What do you do right after a game for your body?
Unknown
Oh, shoot. I usually just relax. Let me think. That's a good question.
Bobby Bones
You ever get in that like the, the chamber, the cold thing, the, the cryo.
Unknown
Oh, the cow therapy?
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Unknown
No, we don't have one of those at Vanderbilt. I probably, I just go in the next day. They have treatment like at 8 in the morning. So I always go into there and just. I'm big on my legs. Just making sure those are healthy because my arm's always going to come with.
Bobby Bones
It after the season. NFL aspirations for sure.
Unknown
I mean, they can't tell the Heisman winner that he can't get drafted.
Bobby Bones
You know, they can't. And it's also, you know, there have been other five, 10, five, 11 quarterbacks.
Unknown
Right. That have gotten drafted and have played well. Exactly.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Unknown
I haven't. I had. I actually know more quarterbacks over 6 foot 1 who have played, I guess less, not as good.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Unknown
Than people under 6 foot.
Bobby Bones
Are they investing in your Heisman campaign? Vanderbilt, have they told you anything they're do?
Unknown
Yeah, for sure.
Bobby Bones
That's a part of it.
Unknown
Right, right, right. And I think it just comes with good play as well and that just, that'll result, you know, when we start winning football games.
Bobby Bones
Well, dude, I really appreciate you coming in. It's super cool to watch you develop and watch you start to be a more of a household name in college football last year because it definitely happened about midway through and then people just followed you all year. And I'm sure you felt that as well, and, you know, hopefully, you gotta take that momentum and roll it over to this year.
Unknown
No, for sure. I appreciate you, Bobby. Thank you for having me, too.
Bobby Bones
What about the schedule? Have you looked at it?
Unknown
Yeah. There'll be some intense games. I love all our road games, too. Those will all be fun environments.
Bobby Bones
What's the hardest place that you've ever had to play?
Unknown
Oh, that's a good question. Conference, you would say? I would say Liberty. Liberty was up there. Just. The fans were. It was like the sideline was here and then a foot away, like, right there is where the stands were so they could. Like, you could hear them. Minnesota was a good one. It was the first game, and literally the field was shaking, you know? And what about last year?
Bobby Bones
What was the hardest place you had to play?
Unknown
Oh, let me think. I don't think LSU really lived up to the hype.
Bobby Bones
What. What time?
Unknown
Maybe it wasn't filled, though.
Bobby Bones
Were you playing day or night?
Unknown
Night.
Bobby Bones
You really.
Unknown
Yeah, and it really wasn't. I honestly think that the whole stadium didn't show up that day, but, you know, they got the best of us still, so we had to come in with some fire when they come to town.
Bobby Bones
Well, dude, congratulations. Rooting for you. I was rooting for you last year. Didn't. You know, Took a couple games before I was like, all right, I like this dude. I like what he does. I like his energy.
Unknown
Yeah, come check us out. We'll have a good time. For sure.
Bobby Bones
Last year they were like, come up into the booth and hop on with some of the guys and talk during the game. And I was like, if I go up and they lose, they're going to blame me. Because anything out of the ordinary, if it happens and there's a loss, fans love to connect it to something else for sure. So last year I didn't do that because I didn't want to be connected to any losses. This year, I'm gonna look at the schedule and find the game. Are you really gonna win? I'm gonna come up. I'm gonna come up because that way it won't be assigned to me. I won't be the reason you guys win or lose. I'll just be up there doing my thing.
Unknown
Well, just come out and if anything happens, you blame it on me.
Bobby Bones
Well, they'll do that anyway. Or they'll credit you for it, too. Do you feel like quarterback gets all the credit? Too much credit and too much blame.
Unknown
For sure. There's three people that we always talk about. It's the head coach the offensive coordinator and the quarterback. And when we win, we get too much praise and when we lose, they all throw us under.
Bobby Bones
With coach Lee being such a defensive guy. Do you spend much time with him?
Unknown
Oh, yeah. I ask him a lot of questions about the defense. He's like thinking about different types of ways. Like we see NFL coverages all day and like they'll get to a cover 2 doing some weird stuff and it's like, how are you doing that? That's not even a true cover. It looks like cover three, you know, but that stuff is just way different. Just a lot of third down, third and long stuff that they get to.
Bobby Bones
Eddie, a final question.
Eddie
No, man, it's just awesome having you here. I mean, my favorite was watching you in New Mexico because that was like.
Bobby Bones
Late for us, right?
Eddie
You know, so like after I lost all my bets of the day, I'm like, all right, New Mexico. So dude, it's really cool Avenue here.
Bobby Bones
That's funny because those are the games we watch after central time zone. After all of our games, Eastern and central go. So we're watching like Oregon State, New Mexico, because you guys are playing later. So we can watch those games later.
Unknown
I remember at New Mexico State we were like nine and three against a spread or something like that.
Bobby Bones
That's pretty. Eddie, you should know that. There we go. Yeah, that's why he's watching. Diego, good to see you, man. Really appreciate that.
Unknown
I appreciate you guys having me.

Bobby Bones
All right, super cool to have Diego here. Eddie, I'm actually going to give you this. You can have the goal.
Eddie
The helmet?
Bobby Bones
No, the goal post.
Eddie
Oh, yeah. That's one of my.
Bobby Bones
Straight out the river. Maybe the answer should be thank you.
Eddie
Well, I was going to get there.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, See, he's like, yeah, that's right. Give it to me.
Eddie
I don't even have it in my hands yet, dude.
Bobby Bones
Diego gave me a plaques. Is Vanderbilt 40. Number one, Alabama 35. October 5th, 2024. It's part of the goal post and he signed it.
Eddie
That's amazing.
Bobby Bones
You should have that. Hey.
Eddie
Hey, Bobby. Thank you, dude. That's awesome.
Bobby Bones
It was just met with such aggression, like. Yeah, of course. He's so mad about the weekend.
Eddie
No, I'm not. No, I'm not. One stroke is good. It was.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Yeah, it's a good spot. It was actually very, very competitive.
Unknown
This is cool.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. That last day, I. I really hope he wins now. I hope it goes to, I guess, total score, right? That's what it is. Yeah, totally.
Eddie
It's like A turn.
Bobby Bones
Never mind. If one of us is up 6 going into the last round, it doesn't matter, because one of us could have a bad day and shoot 90. Yeah. Yeah. It's true. Yeah.
Eddie
And. And then we'll decide what we do if we're tied at the end, right? Like the sudden death playoff swing off. Do we play another round? Do we just go back to 18?
Bobby Bones
Like, you know, I think we should make that before we do the last round. Yeah. Yes. Yes. So we don't need to be in the round and think of it, but we don't have to do it right now. Yeah. Okay. So that's the goal post.
Eddie
That is awesome. Thank you, man.
Bobby Bones
And not only that, so I really cool. Had a couple friends come in town. One of them is the Cincinnati head coach, Coach Satterfield.
Eddie
I mean, that's amazing that you calling them like. That's my. That's your friend now.
Bobby Bones
I think it is, because now we text.
Eddie
Awesome, dude.
Bobby Bones
So they were like, hey, we're coming to the opera. No, no. So, okay, remember we went to Cincinnati. His chief of staff, who they were, he's like, just call me Chief.
Eddie
Yeah, Chief.
Bobby Bones
Yes. So he hit me up and he was like, hey, what can we do in Nashville? I'm bringing a coach. But the thing about it's because he's Coach Spear now. Chief is now back to being Coach Spear. And Coach Spear was like, a head coach. Has been a head coach before as well.
Eddie
Chief.
Bobby Bones
And Chief. Yes. Chief was the chief of staff at Cincinnati under Coach Satterfield. Yep. Chief goes back to Appalachian State and is, like, running high school recruiting for Appalachian State, which is where he was with Coach Satterfield.
Eddie
Got it.
Bobby Bones
So Coach Spear, Chief hit me up and was like, hey, we're coming to town. What can we do? And I was like, I have a few things you can do. Like, who's coming? He was like, it's me and my wife. It's Coach Satterfield and his wife. And this is like, two months ago. And I was like, you guys do this, do that. Like, go to the Bluebird, go to the hall of Fame, but you should go to the Opry. And I'll make sure I play that night so I can, like, you guys come back in the back. I'll give you the tour. And they're like, great. It's like, three months ago. They set this up. And so they come. That's what they did. So they went and watched the first part, and, like, Mark Wills performed and Abby Cohen performed. And then I Put them back in the crowd. But we hung out the whole time backstage. And then I performed for, like, 10, 11 minutes. I did some of the jokes we talked about. You did? Yeah. Which, by the way, I'll tell you what worked and what only kind of worked. The calling Eddie to see if he wants to fill things that turned into a fancy football joke. Yeah. Yeah. That did well. Nice. Yeah, that did good in this room. Yeah. And I thought maybe the lactose intolerant, being allergic to cheese and from the south, like being a cowboy allergic to his horse. That one kind of thing. I thought for old people, they'd like that one. It was. It did mid. It did mid.
Eddie
And at the Opry. I thought that'd be a good spot.
Bobby Bones
Me too, because they don't really do pop culture references to Opry because sometimes the crowd's so old. It did mid. But that one worked really well. I did, like, three new jokes. It's fine. I hadn't done stand up in a long time, so I felt a little disjointed altogether. But it was fun to see them. And so they brought. And Eddie, I have you some stuff from. From Appalachian State.
Eddie
Dang, that's awesome.
Bobby Bones
So.
Eddie
Hey, thank you, Bobby.
Bobby Bones
There you go. Look at this. Thanks, chief.
Eddie
Oh, that's.
Bobby Bones
Well, he didn't say, give it to Eddie. Oh, they gave me a bunch of stuff.
Eddie
Oh, he didn't say, here's Eddie?
Bobby Bones
No.
Eddie
Okay.
Bobby Bones
They say anything about Kevin? They didn't. Well, they didn't say anything about Eddie, so. Okay.
Eddie
Why would they say anything about Kevin?
Bobby Bones
I'm just making sure. I asked for a large, so that's yours.
Eddie
Awesome.
Bobby Bones
You want it?
Eddie
Thank you. Yes, of course. Thank you, Bobby.
Unknown
That.
Bobby Bones
You're welcome. Them. And then here's the App State shirt. I kept some of the stuff, too.
Eddie
Thank you, man. That's really cool.
Bobby Bones
Boom. Dude, the Vanny people gave us stuff, too. Have you tried it on Eddie? I didn't see. I never saw any of it. Eddie. Eddie took yours.
Eddie
That's not true.
Bobby Bones
I saw nothing. I mean, I don't wear large. Do you wear large to work out in.
Eddie
Oh, you do?
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Eddie
Oh, I only took one thing. Maybe two. There's no there. There's some left.
Bobby Bones
Oh, there is. Okay.
Eddie
I think. I don't know.
Bobby Bones
Well, what I got is super comfy. I saw nothing.
Eddie
You did get a helmet?
Bobby Bones
No, but they left stuff. And they were like, hey, we left you stuff. And I was like, cool, I'll go check it out. And then all of a sudden, it was all gone. Yeah. There's some stuff here, I think, still. I don't want anything. Okay. Do you watch UFC fights? Did.
Eddie
Oh, yeah. It is awesome.
Bobby Bones
Did Dustin Poirier, he win?
Eddie
Nah. His last fight in the ufc and.
Bobby Bones
He lost it again. I don't follow UFC enough to know how influential and how transcendent or whatever the term you want to use. I just saw Theo Vaughn. Like, he's been my guy the whole time. So he went.
Eddie
Theo was there.
Bobby Bones
And then I saw him. And his guy's name. Holloway.
Eddie
Holloway, yeah.
Bobby Bones
Afterward, complaining that they didn't win Fight of the night.
Eddie
There were some really good fights that were before that.
Bobby Bones
They were both, like, all jacked up, and they were, like, talking after the fight. They beat the crap out of each other, and they're back in the back talking with each other after the fight. And Max Holloway.
Eddie
Max Holloway.
Bobby Bones
Max Holloway's like, we didn't get effing fight of the night. Dana White gave it to somebody. Yeah, because there's, like, a bonus.
Eddie
Yeah, there was one, like, maybe two, three fights. Fights before then. That was really, really good. Really, really good.
Bobby Bones
So how does Poirier. Poirier's done.
Eddie
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And.
Eddie
And it was. He's from Louisiana, so they fought in New Orleans, and it was just a good, like, goodbye.
Bobby Bones
Lil Wayne came out with him.
Eddie
Lil Wayne was there. Lil Wayne got in the. In the octagon after the fight.
Bobby Bones
That's cool.
Eddie
A little bit. I'm just like, what are you doing?
Bobby Bones
Well, I did see that Poirier said if he won, he won a little. Way to put the belt on him. Is Holloway a champ?
Eddie
They've. This is the third time that they fought, so they both have won once, and then now. Yeah, Holloway's like. And it wasn't for the champ. It wasn't for, like, a weight class championship. It was for the bmf. Bad Mother.
Bobby Bones
I know what BMF means. Yeah, but that's a real belt.
Eddie
Yeah, like, that's the belt that they were fighting for.
Bobby Bones
So is that just one. You just say it exists. Dana White created it, like, three or four years ago. They didn't make it up. No. Yeah. Okay. Dana White was like, hey, we need this for. To promote more fights, I guess the Bad Mother. And it's a. It's. It's an awesome. Eddie. And I'd fight for the GMF Golf.
Eddie
Awesome.
Bobby Bones
Do you want any money?
Eddie
Yeah, dude, I want, like, 100 bucks on UFCA. I never win 100 bucks, but it was one of those nights where, like, I only do five dollar bets, right? So, like, every time I'd win one, I'd be like, you know what? Let me just take my winnings and keep doing it. It was like a night in Vegas where you're just like, let it ride. Let it. And I just kept hitting, boom, boom.
Bobby Bones
But there was nobody with you chanting, let it ride.
Eddie
No, it's just me, dude.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. So you're chanting to yourself.
Eddie
It was just. Just me. And after like, 9:30 or 10:00', clock, the whole family goes to bed. So literally it was just me till like one in the morning yelling, let it ride yourself.
Bobby Bones
That's so late. I thought he said so lames are so late. That's so late. So late. I don't even watch them. But even then, it's so late. Like, I remember standing up on Netflix watching the Tyson and Jake Paul. It didn't go off till like, 11:30. Yes.
Eddie
No, dude. The worst was when we were. We were coming back from, like, a show. We were playing maybe, I think, in D.C. and McGregor was fighting Cowboy and Cowboy Cerrone, and I was like, you know what? If I time it right, like, I could probably make it home by the time McGregor fights. So I bought it for like $80, and it goes on. And it was the one that lasted for five seconds.
Unknown
Oh, dang.
Eddie
I bought the UFC fight to watch five seconds of a fight. I hated it. I was so mad.
Bobby Bones
That's funny. All right, we're done. Thank you, guys. Thanks to Diego Pavia for coming in. Eddie. We'll give it a run. Round two. We gonna play this week?
Eddie
I think we can. There's time to play this week if you're able to.
Bobby Bones
We'll have to figure out a time because Eddie was like, I have nothing to do this weekend. And so I hit him up because, like, kind of last minute, we went and played yesterday. Kind of early. George Burge got back in town, and I don't get to see George a lot because he's kind of killing it with his country career. And he was like, I'm getting in town because he had a show in Alabama. He's like, I'll be in town early if we want to play golf. And so Eddie was like, I have nothing to do. So I text him. I was like, you want to go? We're going with George. And he was like, no, can't play. You literally. But you literally said you had nothing to do is why I asked.
Eddie
Sundays are tough, man. We got church.
Bobby Bones
And then you said you had nothing to do.
Eddie
Saturday.
Bobby Bones
You said the whole weekend.
Eddie
Well, that's my weekend. Saturday. Because Sunday, dude, we gotta get. We gotta get back in the grind. That's when we start working the yard and, like, a restart day. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
You just shot 110 yesterday. It was so hot. I shot at 89, sweating my glove, hands off.
Eddie
Dang, dude, 89. That would have been my day to catch up on you.
Bobby Bones
You just shot 110. You missed what I said.
Eddie
Nah, I wouldn't have shot 110. I do. Right now that we're competing, I don't have 110 in me. That score doesn't exist in my golf repertoire.
Bobby Bones
One down, three to go.
Eddie
You're dead.
Bobby Bones
Okay, maybe.
Eddie
Maybe you're dead.
Bobby Bones
You're right. Maybe, dude.
Eddie
So much fun, though. I love it. I love it. I'm glad we're doing this so we can finally just progress.
Bobby Bones
This is all your baby. I didn't challenge you.
Eddie
What do you mean? Do you challenge me every time?
Bobby Bones
No. When we play, I like to win, but you're the one. I want to show you I'm the best first and forever. I'm like, all right. And then you're like, four rounds. No, get. I'm like, dude, okay, but we don't play like that normally, so why would you, in like, a definitive moment of who's the best, play different than you always play? That was my point.
Eddie
After this is said and done, like, anytime you're like, hey, what's your score? I'm like, don't matter, dude. I'm better than you. It's gonna be so awesome.
Bobby Bones
And then what if it's the opposite?
Eddie
Then, I mean, I'm gonna be like, all right, dude. Like, I'll try to beat him every single round again for the rest of our life.
Bobby Bones
I'm up one stroke going into this week. All right, that's it. Thank you, guys. We will see you guys later on this week. Hit it, Eddie. Bye, everybody. Theme song written by Bobby Bones. That's me.
