Mike
This is a podcast called 25 Whistles. Talking Forts. And they all wear a whistle. Yeah, it' but what did you expect? It's a podcast called 25 Whistles.
Eddie
25 Whistles.
Mike
No Bill O'Brien coming up in a little bit. Head football coach at Boston College, but head coach of the Texans went to Penn State. Was in the Alabama. Hey, go coach for Nick Saban for a minute and then it'll put you back into the program.
Nathan King
Was he a coordinator?
Mike
Yeah. Defensive coordinator, Offensive coordinator. Was he not?
Reed Yarberry
I believe so, yeah.
Mike
Because he's been a quarterback and wide receivers guy. So he'll be on from Boston College in just a little bit, so that'll be cool. Where do I want to start? Let's do real sports for a second. Blow the whistle.
Nathan King
Eddie Real sports.
Mike
Why'd you yell real sports?
Nathan King
Because you said you want to do real sports.
Mike
Well, I was going to talk about sports. I was going to talk about pickleball for a second. But I want to do real sports first before we get to that. Actually. Debo Samuels going to the Commanders.
Nathan King
Oh, God. Gosh.
Mike
You're a Cowboys fan. How does it make you feel?
Nathan King
That's brutal, man. They're just stacking up over there. It's just going to be hard. The Eagles are going to be good again. Commanders are setting up to be good again. I mean, that's going to leave the Cowboys in third place probably. We're going to have no chance for the playoffs again.
Mike
I mean, Aaron Rodgers probably goes to the Giants now.
Nathan King
Oh, my. That's even worse.
Mike
And he'll probably play pretty well. I can see him playing pretty well with the Giants. Much better than he did with the Jets. Yes.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
And it's going to be like that. Yeah. I mean, yeah, yeah. You know, you're a Jets fan.
Reed Yarberry
We're cursed.
Mike
And also a longer time from that injury. That's that.
Reed Yarberry
And he was playing better towards the end of the year, so.
Mike
So the Debo Samuel trade is to the Commanders for a fifth round pick. And it's not so much about the pick because you're like, dang, he's pretty good. Why did he only get a 5th rounder? Mostly it was because of the basically $18 million salary and the fact that he's always hurt. So, yeah, as a Cowboys fan, probably not what you want to hear.
Nathan King
We got Jonathan Mingo, though. Gave our third round pick for him.
Mike
You did that last.
Nathan King
Just looking back at moves like that, you're just like, oh. And then the Commanders, they give a pick, a fourth round, fifth round for freaking Debo Samuels.
Reed Yarberry
I feel like he's going to go off this year, too.
Mike
Terry McLaurin.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah. And he's got something to prove now. And like, they can use him in the run game with Jaden Daniels.
Mike
He's got a good quarterback. Yeah. Yeah, that's going to be pretty cool. The Commanders are starting to be a real team, which is weird because they haven't been in a long time. I mean, the end of the Redskins, the Washington football team or club or whatever they were for a minute, the Commanders, they kind of suck. They've kind of been a team that sucked for a long time.
Mark Seal
Yeah.
Mike
So you just think their colors suck. Like anybody that colored a team that sucks. Like, that's. If a team is that bad, that Long. That's how I feel about the Jaguars. Like, if anyone is that kind of like bluish green, I'm like, they must.
Reed Yarberry
Suck because loser color.
Mike
That's a loser color.
Nathan King
That's funny how you associate that because, yeah, what is that maroon? That ugly, rusty whatever it is.
Mike
And that W is a terrible looking logo. But I'm telling you, a little bit of winning changes, that you start to go. It's a pretty solid W. Like, that's a good font right there. So, yeah, that sucks for the Cowboys because it looks like the commanders with new ownership are starting to be a real life. They're starting to be a Pinocchio. I'm a real boy.
Reed Yarberry
Look at that.
Mike
Sorry, dude.
Nathan King
And you talk to Jaden Daniels, like, what's he like?
Mike
Chills. Could be chill as. Could be cool as the other side of the pillow.
Nathan King
Keep going, keep going.
Mike
Cool as a cucumber, cold as ice. He's willing to sacrifice as love.
Nathan King
Like nothing, it seems like nothing gets to that guy. He'd be like, yeah, yeah, whatever.
Mike
And I don't know if I would think that if people hadn't been saying that a lot on television because the talking heads are like, yeah, nothing affects them. And then when you meet him and you've already had that built into you, you're like, oh, I see what they mean. If I were to have met him without that, I'd have been like, that guy didn't care about anything. But because people that actually know him talk about him, I believe them. Plus, I met him, he was super nice. He was like, nice. He was like, good manners.
Nathan King
He say yes, sir to you?
Mike
Super polite. Yeah. So, yeah, sorry, dude. Debo Sam is only 29, which is crazy. He seems like he's about 43 because he's been injured. Like, he feels like he's my age. Commanders are optimistic, obviously, or they wouldn't spend the 18 million bucks on it. Other free agency stuff. We mentioned Aaron Rodgers because Stafford is resigning in LA and is getting his money for another couple years. Aaron Rodgers obviously is not going to go to la. I think that was the move. Had Stafford decided to go to the Giants or to the Raiders? Stafford stand in la? It looks like Aaron Rodgers to the Giants. It's not a foregone conclusion, but it seems to be trending that way. Which probably means they won't draft a quarterback, right?
Reed Yarberry
I mean, I don't know because I think they're hoping that he can mentor.
Mike
But have they tried that? Zach. Zach Wilson?
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Nathan King
Not a lot of mentor with the jets, you mean?
Reed Yarberry
Yeah, exactly. So, yeah.
Mike
But again, he did get hurt immediately. Maybe in his older age he won't be such a douchebag.
Reed Yarberry
Right. He was humbled a little bit.
Nathan King
Maybe we keep waiting for that.
Mike
I know, you're right. That's a good point.
Nathan King
Never happens.
Mike
But like, he wasn't super warm with Jordan. Love from any of the conversations I've had with people that know. But what's crazy is, is that he wasn't treated warmly when he came up with Brett Favre.
Reed Yarberry
Right.
Mike
So you would think someone who kind of was treated like garbage wouldn't treat someone like garbage. And again, I've. My sources are seven out of tens about the Green Bay situation.
Nathan King
I don't know Aaron Rodgers, he also seems like the kind of guy that if you even let him know that he's going to go in a mentoring role, he's not cool with that. Like, I'm only here to play.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Nathan King
I'm here to win. I don't care about the next generation. That's your problem, not mine.
Mike
And if you sign him, you sign him probably to a two year deal and you hope he is able to complete that contract. But you're going probably one, maybe two. But does he think. That is the question.
Reed Yarberry
Right, right.
Mike
He may think he's Superman. He's done just enough ayahuasca to feel like he's invincible. Stefan Diggs is a free agent.
Nathan King
That'd be cool.
Mike
Would you like Cowboys to have him?
Nathan King
Would love it.
Mike
Brother and brother.
Nathan King
I think there's nothing better than having family members together in one team.
Mike
Do they have enough money?
Nathan King
Probably not.
Mike
Yeah. Especially if they got to sign Michael Parsons.
Nathan King
Yep. I mean, Dak took most of their money. Now they got to sign Michael Parsons. Going to take a good chunk of money.
Mike
I mean, CD Lamp took a big part of it too.
Nathan King
Yes, I understand three players are taking a lot of the Cowboys money, but we did lose Zach Martin, so maybe that frees up a little bit of money.
Mike
That sucks though. He retired and he was stable.
Nathan King
Yeah, man.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
He was a stud that you treated that like it was a positive. And I'm here to tell you, just money.
Nathan King
Just money wise.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Nathan King
It's almost like you can't replace that. You cannot replace that. But you look at it like, all right, that does suck. That's tough for us. But that is some money that we have left over now. Now maybe we can use that somewhere useful.
Mike
But yeah, nowhere more useful than the offensive line.
Nathan King
He retired. There's nothing we could do about It.
Mike
No, I know, but you're acting like it's a good thing. You're talking yourself into it. I'm not allowing it. No, dude, it's getting worse.
Nathan King
Did you see him at the honors?
Mike
No, he was there. I didn't see him.
Nathan King
It's pretty cool to see him there and I never seen. I've never seen him before. He's a big man.
Mike
Justin Fields. So the Steelers are reportedly leaning towards signing Fields over Russell Wilson as of this hour. I don't know what they're going to do for a while. It was Aaron Rodgers to the Steelers. He's kind of flirted with everybody. Yeah. But you know, if they sign Fields, it's more of a long term Play. He's only 26 years old. He was 4 and 2 before getting benched. But the defense was playing awesome. So that four and two. I'm not going to say Justin Fields won four games.
Reed Yarberry
No. Right.
Mike
But he didn't play terrible. And Russell Wilson, I think, was just going to be the guy until he wasn't. But Russ is a free agent.
Reed Yarberry
Raiders.
Mike
Yeah.
Nathan King
What's the. What are the Raiders doing over there?
Mike
Garoppolo, Russell Wilson, Pete Carroll reunion.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Nathan King
Well, that'd be cool, I guess.
Reed Yarberry
You know, they kind of ended pretty poorly. Right.
Mike
I feel like it was sour. Any indications that I was looking for. Yeah, because he traded him.
Reed Yarberry
Right.
Mike
Like he wanted out. But also with the Garoppolo situation, they act like Pete Carroll loves Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo. 1. Let's not forget Garoppolo won. He got to the Super Bowl. Yeah.
Nathan King
When did Garoppolo play for Carroll?
Mike
No, I didn't say that. I'm just saying he acts like they're saying Pete Carroll likes Garoppolo. I don't think they ever played.
Reed Yarberry
No, I don't.
Mike
Together. T. Higgins.
Nathan King
Yeah, he's good.
Mike
I don't know where Cincinnati is getting money. I mean, if anything, they'll tag him a franchise. Tag him. I don't think they can pay all. I don't think they pay. Jamar Chase Hendrickson.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah. Trey Hendrickson.
Mike
Yeah, yeah. And T. Higgins. When they can tag T. Higgins. Khalil Mack. And he's getting older, huh?
Reed Yarberry
Yeah, he's up there now.
Mike
He's like.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah, he's been around the block.
Mike
The Eagles kind of the leader in the clubhouse there.
Reed Yarberry
Makes sense.
Mike
I would love to go to the Eagles if I were old.
Reed Yarberry
Heck, yeah.
Mike
I mean, they are ready to go.
Nathan King
They are.
Mike
I mean, Miles Garrett, if he's if he goes to the Eagles. Oh, my God. Like, it's going to. It's.
Reed Yarberry
And they'll trade the picks, too. Yeah, they'll.
Mike
Because Miles Garrett's not an old man, right?
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
And he's awesome. It's like him and TJ Watt. Like, that's top tier. I think Henderson's right below them.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
Yeah. Just barely.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
But holy crap. And then Sam Darnold. So Darnold very much could be a Raider.
Reed Yarberry
He could.
Mike
Could be back with the Vikings if they feel like JJ McCarthy is not progressing in a way. But I feel like, from what I'm hearing. And I do have d. I do have a couple decent. I do now have odd connections. I know. It's weird. I do have odd connections. I feel like he is progressing at the rate they expect, which is wild.
Reed Yarberry
Because I feel like when he came out of college, everyone was like, oh, he just hands the ball off. He doesn't do any. You know, he can't make NFL throws. And it's just like, I feel like that was.
Mike
Yes. And that was what was said. But I feel like a lot of that was just because the offense at Michigan ran because they never had to throw the ball.
Reed Yarberry
They never had to. Right.
Mike
They got up and then just. Here you go. Here you go. Reed. How you doing, buddy? Just staring at you.
Kevin
Good, man. You know, I. I'm just. I'm here listening, you know, I'm enjoying the show.
Mike
We appreciate that.
Nathan King
You know, he's like a listener, but in person.
Kevin
Exactly.
Nathan King
That's cool.
Mike
What do you think about free agency, man?
Kevin
You know, I wish we could be free agents in life.
Mike
You are. You are literally a free agent.
Nathan King
You can do whatever you want.
Mike
You're leaving this show. You're not.
Kevin
Oh, my gosh. You're not even obligated.
Reed Yarberry
You walked right into that, man.
Kevin
I kind of am a free agent.
Mike
I never made you sign a contract.
Kevin
I need an agent.
Mike
An agent would only take you if he felt like he could make money off of you.
Kevin
Oh, that's fair. That wouldn't happen.
Nathan King
You'd keep all the money. What do you mean?
Kevin
Yeah, yeah, I'll keep all the money.
Mike
An agent would take 10%.
Kevin
10.
Mike
Unless it's a massive contract, and then they would take less. Like, there are certain. In certain sports, they can't take more than, like, 2.5 or 3% because you're talking about millions of dollars. Where it's weird with these college athletes is the agents can go 20%, 15% because there are no regulations. And so you have college athletes going, I'm in. And they're having to give 20% of their money away.
Kevin
I mean, could you even say 50%?
Mike
You can say whatever you want in certain situations. Like if an agent. I have an agent and I have an agency. And so I have different agents inside that agency. But my main agent, it's 10% of anything. Except for, like, my big radio deal, which is 2%. But if I'm, like, touring, it's 10% crazy. Yeah, it's 10%.
Kevin
But it also gets you a lot of opportunities.
Mike
So that's the way. Right. Is it worth giving up 10%? Am I getting 17%, 14% from the agent to give up 10%?
Kevin
That makes sense.
Mike
Now I give my management 15%.
Mark Seal
Oh, wow.
Kevin
So you're spreading it across.
Mike
That's already 25% immediately. And my business manager gets 5%.
Nathan King
That's 30%.
Mike
Any money I make. 30%.
Kevin
So you're just hoping you get more. More opportunities, then that everybody is just helping you.
Mike
That is the plan. Now, for my radio contract, it is not at 30%. For my radio contract, it is much lower, like I mentioned, because with baseball players, football players, there's only a certain level they can take. But for if I'm touring, if I'm doing television, all that, it's 30%.
Reed Yarberry
That's crazy.
Mike
Wow.
Kevin
I'm learning stuff, man.
Mike
It sucks.
Kevin
Yeah.
Mike
Because I have to pay it out every two months, so I'm writing checks.
Kevin
That just seems like a lot of, like, organization you gotta have.
Mike
That's why your business manager is worth 5%. Because bills don't come to my house. I have to pay percentages everywhere. And so she does that. And she also. I'll call her and be like, hey, can I buy this?
Kevin
Oh, yeah, just make sure.
Mike
Like, yeah, like, what do we do? I grew up with no understanding of money. Now I have an understanding of money 6 out of 10 because I've had to learn. But for a long time, I didn't have a business manager, and I was just writing percentage checks, not knowing exactly what I was doing.
Kevin
So you don't even look at that stuff. You literally are just like, tell me if there's a problem, and I will ask you if most of the time.
Mike
Yeah.
Nathan King
Do you get the number when you have to write those checks? Do you get the number of what you owe them? Because the percentage kind of. Right. The percentage sounds like, oh, it's only 10%. It's only 15%.
Mike
It's never only.
Nathan King
But when you look at the Number you're like, yeah.
Mike
I look at my bank account every day.
Mark Seal
Wow.
Nathan King
Really?
Mike
Every day? Sometimes. That was.
Nathan King
Stressed me out, man.
Mike
I look, I am really insecure and neurotic about not having any money again because I've been there. And so I watch it all the time. I watch. See if I've been getting scammed. See, I watch, like, what I'm spending, see who's. All of it. Sometimes I will tell my wife, spend more money, because she'll be like, I know how weird you are about stuff. I don't know. We're not gonna spend any money.
Nathan King
That's a good day.
Mike
And I'm like, hey. Like, there's not been a single charge. Like, you, like, buy. We're good.
Nathan King
Is she like, you got it?
Mike
No, no, that would be.
Nathan King
She can't. I'm like, give me the car keys.
Mike
No. And I don't know if it was ever like that. I don't know how I'd react.
Nathan King
Ah, that's a good for it.
Mike
Yeah. Yeah.
Nathan King
You're kind of glad it's not like that.
Mike
Kind of. But I am like, hey. But I look at everything all the time. Where my business manager knows. I look at everything all the time.
Kevin
Do you know when you get paid?
Mike
Oh, yeah.
Kevin
Okay.
Mike
Dude. There are some on the. Because we get paid the 15th and the last day of the month. Yeah, 30th. There are days where if I'm awake at 12, I'll look and see if it posted.
Kevin
Oh, man.
Mike
And then I get breakdowns of everything.
Nathan King
That's good, man. Because you read those stories of, like, artists getting, like, their money. People, like, scamming them out of, like, millions of dollars. And they never knew because they don't check balances. They didn't look at their bank account.
Mike
And mostly, even more than that, it's because they didn't know money to begin with and then they didn't check. So most people that grow up understanding money, which I did not at least know how much is coming in and what it kind of should be. Where. If you're, like, from a small town or you grow up poor and all of a sudden you get. You're a ball player, you got money. Where they really get in trouble is they don't take taxes out. If you are. What do they call it if you're just working for yourself?
Kevin
Sole proprietor.
Mike
Whatever. Close enough. Independent contractor. Thank you, Mike. Independent contractor. Because I have jobs where I do that, like my television work. All independent contract jobs. So if they say we're going to pay you $50,000. It comes with $50,000. It's up to me. Take the taxes out. That's my business manager. So a lot of times these people that get in trouble for taxes, they're getting in trouble because. Not because they were like, oh, screw the government. It's because they don't know that what they got is money. They then have to go figure out what to pay in.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
And then, like, a Dane Cook, which was his brother, was his money guy. You just trust them wholeheartedly.
Nathan King
Yeah.
Mike
So one, you don't know money until you trust what they're doing, the right thing. And then it gets so lost that even when you do find it, millions are gone. There's nothing you can do about it.
Reed Yarberry
Right. Like Baker Mayfield.
Mike
Right. With that.
Reed Yarberry
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Nathan King
Billy Joel.
Mike
Yeah, tell me about that Billy Joel.
Nathan King
Same thing. He had a money. He had a financial guy, and he just took, like, millions of dollars. Had no idea that it was gone.
Reed Yarberry
It's crazy.
Mike
A lot of. Well, California's passed a new law. Mike, have you seen this about influencers? About if you use your kids in influencing, Like. Oh, yeah, yeah. If. If you use your kids in, like, a certain amount of your social media content, I'm gonna just make up the number. I think it's around 40%. You have to pay them certain amount. It has to stay in a trust. And so that's California only. No, everybody's moving out of California.
Nathan King
They don't want to do that.
Mike
They don't want to have to pay. I know. They don't have to pay their kids. Crazy.
Nathan King
That's terrible.
Mike
I was watching one, and she was like, I prayed about it, and God told me that we should move. And it's like, no, no. You use your kids and your content. Yeah. And so you don't want to.
Nathan King
You should just say that, like, there's the kid. Ryan. Remember Ryan's reviews?
Mike
Yes.
Nathan King
I mean, dude, he made them so much money, and, Yeah, I guess legally, they didn't have to give him any of the money. They wanted to keep all the money they could. And poor Ryan. That was his show.
Mike
You're saying poor Ryan. Did he not get the money?
Nathan King
No. I don't know what that happened, but, I mean, with this law, it's like, they have to give him money.
Mike
That's. If they're in 30% of the content, they have to set aside 65% of the earnings for the kids.
Reed Yarberry
Dang.
Mike
So with Ryan, though, he's the main person.
Nathan King
He's the dude.
Mike
So I'm assuming that's different than a mom blogger who uses their kid in a bunch that's not paying their kid. Like, Ryan's the main dude.
Kevin
He should get all the money then.
Nathan King
You should.
Mike
And the parents just look over it. But like, Macaulay Culkin, I think, got a bunch of money taken by his parents.
Reed Yarberry
Like, there are those Hollywood stories, especially back then, too. Probably. Right?
Mike
Yeah. Because you can't really log on.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
I think a big benefit now is at any point I can get on my phone on apps and see.
Reed Yarberry
Right.
Nathan King
That's so true.
Mike
Where back then. What do you do? You drive to the bank. I'd like to see, please.
Nathan King
You wait for the letter to come in the mail.
Mike
Yeah.
Nathan King
Your statement.
Mike
Yeah. I don't know how we got to this point.
Nathan King
I don't know either. But it's a good conversation.
Mike
It's been fun.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
How do we get here?
Nathan King
Agents.
Mike
Free agents. Free agency.
Kevin
It's my fault. It's my fault.
Mike
You are a free agent. You, for many reasons. One, didn't make you sign a contract.
Kevin
That's true.
Mike
You. You can leave at any time.
Kevin
That's true.
Mike
Two, you're actually out anyway. If today is March 3rd. So end of March and April, that's it. You have less than two months here.
Kevin
Less than two months.
Mike
Do you know where you're going to live yet?
Kevin
No, I. I told. No, I wasn't telling you. I was telling Tim.
Nathan King
You don't tell me anything.
Mike
You don't tell me anything. We have to hear from, like, Kevin.
Kevin
I will find out on your birthday.
Nathan King
My birthday? March 21st.
Kevin
March 21st.
Mike
It was your birthday this weekend, too.
Kevin
Oh, yeah.
Nathan King
Got to stop for that. You have to stop doing this.
Mike
What's up?
Nathan King
People are telling me happy birthday. Like, random people all year.
Mike
It's my favorite bit. I do it, like, six times a year. I do it, like six times a year.
Bobby Bones
Make some noise for the greatest shooter of all time, Steph Curry. We went live from All Star Weekend for a new podcast called Go Greatest of Their Era. And we ranked our top five shooters from the 2000s.
Eddie
Peja 5. Dirk Ford.
Mike
Peja is elite.
Bobby Bones
Okay, okay.
Mark Seal
I'm mad him.
Mike
I left him off my list, but I still like my list.
Bobby Bones
You won't believe who Steph left off his list.
Eddie
That's so tough. That's why we have these conversations.
Bobby Bones
Yes, Absolutely.
Eddie
Love it.
Bobby Bones
Steph talked about what separates the truly elite NBA shooters.
Eddie
When you have a scouting report and you're on the list as not just a shooter, but we have specific rules for how we guard you. There's a fear factor that's associated with anytime you're wide open. Like you might as well just count that and get on back on defense.
Bobby Bones
Listen to Goat G O T E Greatest of their era on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Dr. Joy
Dr. Joy here you may know me from Therapy for Black Girls where we're celebrating 400 episodes of the podcast. That's a whole lot of Girl Me Too moments. For years, we've had deep, thoughtful and inspiring conversations about Black women's mental health. And now we're celebrating this milestone in a big way. In this special episode, Peloton Yogi Chelsea Jackson Roberts shares how yoga has taught her to stay grounded and present while balancing motherhood and self care. I can't control my partner. I can't control my child. I can't control anyone outside the way.
Mike
That I govern myself in this world.
Dr. Joy
And the celebration doesn't stop there. We'll continue this milestone with Dr. Lauren Mims, who joins me to discuss the powerful yet sometimes challenging transition from girlhood to womanhood for Black Femmes. Together, we explore how we navigate this transformative journey with strength and grace.
Mike
Black girlhood is giggling. It's sisterhood, but it is also, I think, focusing on learning how to cope with really difficult things that are happening.
Dr. Joy
With insights like these, this 400th episode celebration is one for the books. Listen to Therapy for Black Girls on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Nathan King
Why would you do that to me when I thought we were friends?
Mike
We are friends.
Tisha Allen
Los Angeles, 2021. A friendly neighbor appears out of nowhere and promises to make all my dreams come true.
Dr. Joy
Let's not forget that David Bloom was a professional con artist, so you didn't stand a chance.
Tisha Allen
But my dreams soon turned into a nightmare.
Mark Seal
Blum generally targeted people with money, and.
Tisha Allen
I was not alone.
Mark Seal
He took over 100 people for over $15 million. One of the victims was his own grandmother.
Mike
I was married to David for almost 10 years. It was insane. I was barely functioning. And I just had this realization that.
Mark Seal
He will not stop until he kills me.
Tisha Allen
Getting a con artist to pay for their crimes isn't easy.
Mark Seal
Charge David Blue.
Tisha Allen
I'm Caroline D'Amore. Listen as I take down my scammer on Once Upon a con on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Nathan King
Somebody came up to me the other day. I was like, I'm so sorry. I Sent you a text on your actual birthday. And I didn't realize it was your birthday. I'm like, it wasn't my birthday.
Mike
Bobby just does that crap to me. It's the bit that doesn't die. It's almost like. And I don't mind talking about it openly here on this show. It's almost like the O town bit, where 10 years ago I made the joke that I was one of the original members of O Town. But then I told our listeners, I'm making this joke, but you're now in on the inside joke. I was never a part of O Town. And O Town was formed on a television show. There were no early days of O town. So for 10 years, I've just said I've been a member of O Town. Especially way early in the band before they ever had a hit. And I left. Couldn't really cut it. Once they got famous, I couldn't really sing good enough to be in a vocal group. And I'm super happy for their success and. But I've just kept the bit going. I got committed to the bit 10 years later. And tomorrow night at the Million Dollar show, we're going to reform. They're here. We rehearsed last night.
Kevin
I saw that.
Nathan King
Had you ever the joke by them?
Mike
No.
Nathan King
That to me is the best part.
Mike
No, I'd never met them or communicated them in any way until last night. They showed up and it felt a little weird because I didn't know them two. I didn't want them to think I'm making fun of them. I love O Town. Yeah. It was just one day. I just was going to pick a boy band that wasn't in sync or Backstreet Boys. It could have easily been 98 degrees.
Reed Yarberry
That's what I was going.
Mike
Yeah, it could have easily been. But I like O Town better because I love, I want it all. Nothing at all. That's a jam, Right. And so I picked them and they came in. I didn't quite know what to say.
Kevin
Brothers.
Mike
And so they walked in and three of them, of the four, because Ashley. Ashley died.
Nathan King
Oh, yeah. I didn't know they lost a member.
Mike
Yeah. And so three of the four were there last night at rehearsal and they were all really nice, but a couple of them were super, like, cool. Like, this joke's finally gonna pay off. And I was like, oh, I'm glad they see it. Like, I do.
Mark Seal
Good.
Mike
Yeah. So we practiced last last night and I still suck. They should kick me out of the band again.
Nathan King
That's how it ends. They kick you out again.
Mike
Well, so they didn't know me, and they thought I was just hosting the concert because I wasn't part of the rehearsal. Because if I get up and sing songs, I'm gonna blow my voice out for the show.
Nathan King
Yeah.
Mike
So at this point, I've learned. Don't. So I was there. You and I split time. Rehearsal was, like, seven hours long. So Eddie was up there, and we tagged. I got up. I got there, and Eddie was leaving. And so we switched out. And then they came in, and I wasn't on stage singing because Tracy Lawrence was up there. Russell Dickerson's. So they just thought that I pass it to different people. And I was like, no, no, no. Like, I play and sing with every performance. My whole band does. They're like, oh. But then I have to say, but I really can't sing. It was a weird thing where it's like, I sing with every performance, but I really can't sing because then I have to. So we got up, and I'm singing Ashley's part. And they were like, do this part. And I'm a little nervous because.
Kevin
Come on.
Mike
They think I might can sing. I'm like, I don't mind. Do you see the club over there? Let me find it. Okay. I don't mind playing in here. So they're coming out, and they do, like. They had a hit called Liquid Dreams. And it's the whole dance thing. And then they do that. And then I come back on and we sing the big song together. Because I told them I can't learn the choreography for the dance.
Kevin
I was about to say, can you.
Mike
Dance with the champion, though? Come on.
Reed Yarberry
Champion.
Mike
Yeah, champion. Took me a week to learn a minute.
Kevin
Anybody?
Mike
So I.
Nathan King
And nothing else is hard, hard work.
Kevin
Imagine, though.
Mike
And so I said, hey, so let's organize this. And so they're gonna do. And then there's, like, a beat, and then it starts. All or nothing starts. And then I come in, and I was a little nervous because I can't sing like that. They're pure vocalists. Like, they just sing. They're like, ooh. Do you have it, Mike?
Nathan King
Yeah.
Mike
So this is me. It's in a bed. It's in a rehearsal room. Audio's not great, but you can hear it. Go ahead.
Reed Yarberry
Sing it.
Nathan King
Body.
Mike
Oh, I lose it there. I lose it there.
Nathan King
It slipped a little bit.
Mike
I feel like I can almost keep. And I told them, I said, come in or you gotta help me. You gotta help me. I said, so I'll Do a couple lines, but they were like, no. Sing the whole thing. I'm like, no, no, no, no. You have the wrong idea of what I'm trying to do here. I was. I can just do background vocals all the time. They're like, no, we think you need to sing. And so do you have another one? Yeah, here's another one. Hit the wrong one.
Mark Seal
Oh, here we go.
Mike
So, yeah, as. Anyway, that second clip's good. I just don't want to, like, be so bad. I'm ruining it. So I'm just. There are times, it seems to me. Keep the notes close. Yes, yes. No jumps.
Nathan King
Are you singing a lot? Like, in the car? The.
Mike
Like.
Nathan King
Like every minute of the day.
Mike
Last night, I went home and found it in the key of G, which is what they sing it in. No, C. They sing it in C.
Nathan King
And how did you find that?
Mike
I asked him. I was like, what key is this? I sing everything in G. And they're like, c, crap. Okay. It's kind of close. G is.
Nathan King
That's your key.
Mike
That's what we do. And so it's in C. And so, yeah, I've found karaoke in the key C. And then you're right. If I keep the notes close together, it's harder to scroll.
Reed Yarberry
Keep it in those three notes.
Mike
There are times, it seems to me, I be.
Nathan King
That's gonna be fun.
Reed Yarberry
That's it.
Mike
So anyway, they were cool about the joke, and they were like, this is super cool because it's charity thing, and it's fun. It was good. What are you shaking your head for?
Kevin
It's like, imagine if they walked in and they were like, hey, man, I just want to say, I don't. I don't appreciate you acting like you're a part of this.
Nathan King
They wouldn't come. They wouldn't come, though, right?
Kevin
But what would.
Mike
Correct.
Kevin
What would you do?
Mike
I don't think they would come. And if they did that, I would go. I would go, hey, I understand. I appreciate that. I can understand why you would feel that way. But here's why I've been saying this. It wasn't to make fun of you. It was. I liked you guys so much, I was gonna insert myself in a boy band. I'm the age of you guys, and it was just a running joke. But they knew about the running joke. They've known about it forever.
Kevin
That's so great.
Reed Yarberry
Awesome.
Mike
So, yeah, that's. That. That should be fun. So read. You are free agent.
Kevin
Free agent, baby.
Nathan King
Do what you want, man.
Kevin
I don't Know what to do.
Nathan King
Do what you feel.
Mike
Oh, wait. Is Ashley Parker angel not dead? I thought that.
Nathan King
Dude.
Mike
I thought he was dead.
Kevin
He's just on vacation.
Mike
Maybe he's just out of the group. Oh, let me see. Hold on. He's 43. I guess he's still alive. I know the maybe. I think I'm confusing him and lfo. I know the LFO guy died of, like, leukemia.
Nathan King
Which one? What does he say? What part of.
Mike
Yeah, he's the main guy. Okay.
Nathan King
He's the main singer.
Mike
I think two of them have now died at an lfo.
Nathan King
Dang.
Mike
I. The reason I didn't pick LFO instead of O Town. I remember thinking this in my head. LF only had three members and it was easier. I needed more.
Reed Yarberry
Right. You can blend in better.
Nathan King
Yeah, blend it smart, man.
Mike
Yeah. I think I got him mixed up because last night they were like, singing Ashley's part and I was like, rest in peace. In my head. In my head. No, just in my head. I guess he's not dead.
Kevin
Oh, my God. He comes out.
Mike
Oh, my. My God. Wow. I really. I'm glad I didn't say anything because I really thought, like, in my head. Yeah, I really thought in my head. Okay, I want it this full disclosure here. I thought in my head. Are people gonna get mad? I'm singing the dead guy's part and I don't sing it well. Like, are they gonna get upset? Wow.
Nathan King
So there. There were five members of that band originally.
Mike
Yeah. And there's four now.
Nathan King
Okay. Do they play a lot? They tour.
Mike
They do a lot of shows now. Because everything from, like, the 90s or 2000s is cool again. Yeah, it's like the country music artists that are touring again. Okay. Rich, the lead singer and co founder of LFO, died on September 8, 2010 after battling leukemia. Devin passed away in 2018 due to Adrenal Cancer. LFO. Dang. That sucks. Okay, Mike, Good. Yep. That kind of went to a place I didn't expect it to.
Nathan King
No, the whole.
Mike
The whole conversation. We're going to come back and Talk to Bill O'Brien, the head football coach at Boston College, who also was the head football coach of the Texans, also was coaching with Saban and Belichick with the Patriots. Okay, we'll come back just a second.
Bobby Bones
Make some noise. For the greatest shooter of all time, Steph Curry. We went live from All Star Weekend for a new podcast called Goat Greatest of Their Era. And we ranked our top five shooters from the 2000s.
Eddie
Peja 5. Dirk Ford.
Mike
Peja is elite.
Bobby Bones
Okay, okay.
Mark Seal
I'm mad him.
Mike
I left him off my list, but I still like my list.
Bobby Bones
You won't believe who Steph left off his list.
Eddie
That's so tough. That's why we have these conversations.
Bobby Bones
Yes, absolutely.
Eddie
Love it.
Bobby Bones
Steph talked about what separates the truly elite NBA shooters.
Eddie
When you have a scouting report and you're on the list as not just a shooter, but we have specific rules for how we guard you. There's a fear factor that's associated with it. Anytime you're wide open, like, you might as well just count that and get back on defense.

Dr. Joy Here you may know me from therapy for Black girls, where we're celebrating 400 episodes of the podcast.

All right, we're gonna go over to our interview with Bill O'Brien, head football coach at Boston College. He was hired as the 37th head football coach last year. About this time last year, he began coaching at Brown University. In 1993, he has been the head coach at Penn State and the Houston Texans. He was appointed the head coach at Boston College. First year, went 7 and 6. Turned the program around already, which is why I lead with one of the questions. Like, did what was the ceiling?
Nathan King
Yeah.
Mike
He was nicknamed Teapot during his time with New England Patriots. I didn't ask him about that.
Nathan King
Why was he named Teapot?
Mike
Don't know and don't care. It feels like a. It feels like something.
Reed Yarberry
He was a very emotional coach.
Mike
Maybe. Is that why I heard.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah. Brian Hoyer and. And Tom Brady.
Mike
I would see them fight.
Reed Yarberry
I'd battles, and he would get so heated that he would start crying, so they called him Teapot.
Mike
I'm glad I didn't ask him about that.
Nathan King
Wow.
Reed Yarberry
I think he's pretty open about it, though.
Mike
Okay. But I'm still glad I didn't ask him about that.
Nathan King
We didn't need that.
Mike
Teapot sounds like a nickname your bullies name you. Right. He's also a distant cousin of Conan O'Brien and I.
Nathan King
No way. They both have the same last name, so. Yeah, that makes sense. Wow.
Mike
Well, there's a lot of O'Brien to.
Nathan King
Me, is bigger than anything he's ever done.
Mike
That's crazy distant, though.
Nathan King
Yeah. But still got the O'Brien last name.
Mike
I had seen a lot of clips of him being very emotional on the sidelines. So going into this interview, I was a little like, what's this guy? He's awesome. Yeah. Here he is, Coach Bill O'Brien. Hey, Coach, thanks for the time. Really appreciate it.
Mark Seal
Hey, Bobby, thanks for having me on. I appreciate it.
Mike
Hey, I was watching some Donovan Ezraku stuff this weekend. How important is it to you for the future, with future recruits, that your guys go real high in this draft?
Mark Seal
Yeah, look, I think that that definitely helps. I think it. It helps that we have four guys at the combine, you know, watching, you know, these guys over the weekend. You know, Donovan, Cam Horsley, and then yesterday, Ozzy Trapillo and Drew Kendall. You know, those guys performed really well at the combine. So, you know, for those guys to. To be drafted, you know, high, first, second, third, fourth round, I think is. It's a really good sign for this program that we can get those type of guys to come play here. So I think it would be great to see those guys drafted high.
Mike
Whenever you took the job at bc, what did you think the ceiling was on Year one?
Mark Seal
I don't think. I don't know. If I looked at it that way. I really wanted. We got hired, I would say, a little bit late relative to most hirings. We got hired about a year ago. It was around the second week of February. So what I wanted to do is try to establish the foundation of hard work and toughness and being a good teammate and, you know, going to class and all the things that are giving back to the community, all the things that are important at Boston College and then along the way, obviously want to win some games. We lost games where we committed a lot of mistakes. We got to learn how not to lose before we can learn how to win. But we won some games where we played 60 minutes and we competed well. And so I think we got off to a good start a little bit.
Mike
When you took that job where you're like, our uniforms are so freaking legit.
Mark Seal
I. I love the. You know, I love the old uniforms the best, probably. So we're trying to. We're going with New Balance here pretty soon in the summertime. So New Balance has done a great job of helping us design to go back to those older, you know, the. The Flutie uniforms, You know, the. The ones that they wore back in the day, which I think were pretty cool. Those are the ones we're trying to get back to.
Mike
I just think of the Hail Mary. That's the uniform I think of when I think of BC is Fluti and Hail Mary. Like, those uniforms are so legit that I would be wanting to dress them like that all the time.
Mark Seal
Yeah, no doubt. I agree. I love, you know, the maroon and gold. I kind of like the. The gold pants with the maroon top every once in a while, which, you know, we're going to try to do a little bit more of that moving forward. But. But, yeah, I'm with you. I love the uniform.
Mike
I'm curious about language and installing playbooks with new players. I do a show with Matt Castle, who played with the Patriots for a while. He's like one of my dear friends. We work together every week, and he was Kind of walking through quarterback language with us last week at year one, like how much do you actually. Of the playbook do you actually install?
Mark Seal
Yeah, that's a great question. I would say we definitely did not install the whole thing. We try to in spring practice, you know, look at our team, really, it starts in winter conditioning. Look at our team. What type of team are we going to have? You know, where are the strengths? Right, the on offense, the strengths last year were on the offensive line and you know, the running backs and we felt like we could run the football. We had, we started out with Tommy Castellanos, was a kind of a running quarterback, did a lot of good things relative to using his feet. So that's how we installed the offense. We, we, we look at our team instead of just like putting everything in where some of that might be a waste of time because we're not going to really use all that. So that's kind of how we did it here. I think moving forward we probably get most of it in this spring because we've got a couple different types of quarterbacks and things like that. So. But last year probably just put it in relative to who we thought we were going to be.
Mike
I've spent a bunch of time in Boston. I've toured through Boston a bunch of times and played the Wilbur and like, I love that. I love Boston. I love Massachusetts because it's an honest, it's an honest state. It's a very honest city. What, what's tough for me though is how cold it is. Is this your coldest job ever?
Mark Seal
Yeah. Well, you know what it is today. You know, you're asking it on a good day because today's March 3rd, I think, and it's like 9 degrees. So yeah, it's definitely the coldest job. I mean, I was at Penn State for a couple of years. It got cold there in the middle of Pennsylvania, but not quite like Boston. So yeah, it's definitely, especially this year. It's been record setting cold temperatures here over the last couple weeks.
Mike
I saw, see the tickets are sold out, which has got to be big year. Two season tickets already sold out.
Mark Seal
I think it's big, Bobby. I really do. I appreciate you mentioning that. I do think it's big because look, it shows that people, they're excited about what maybe they saw at points last year. And we have a great home schedule next year we're playing three playoff teams. Very difficult schedule, but a really good schedule for people to come, you know, watch good college football. So, you know, I'm Excited about that. I, you know, I really think that this is a job. You know, I always say it's a pro sports town. Everybody understands that. But we play on Saturdays and, you know, if we can put a good product on the field, hopefully a lot of people come watch us play.
Mike
Do your players often ask for comps for other players that you've coached? Because you have coached a lot of different players in a lot of different places. And do you, do you comp most players?
Mark Seal
You know, that's a great question. I do use that at times. I never really try to say. I'm very careful about how I say it though, Right. Like, you know, I'll never say, hey, you're exactly like this guy. But I'll talk about some of the things that I learned from some of the great players I've coached. Right. Obviously quarterbacks, but also like wide receivers, offensive linemen. Hey, you know, here's some things that I learned from this left tackle that, you know, I think you can really help you instead of saying, hey, you're exactly like this guy. I try to stay away from that, but I definitely use cops when it comes to, hey, man, I learned a lot from this guy. And there's things that you can apply to your game that I learned from, you know, from this tight end or this wide receiver or this offensive lineman, this running back, and I think I try to do it that way.
Mike
Do you ever use any old players you're still close with for recruiting pitches?
Mark Seal
You know what? I don't do that as much. I really don't. What I do here is really use the BC guys that played here. You know, the Matt Ryan's, the Luke Keakley's. Those guys do help us in recruiting and doing different things for us. I try not to. I'm very, you know, you just brought up Matt Castle. Like, you know, I'm a friend of Matt Castle's. He's an awesome guy. I think when you step over the line of friendship, hey, can you help me with my job? I try not to do that. You know what I mean? I try not to. To do that as much. So, you know, but, but, you know, I have a lot of great friends that were great players, so try to stay away from that friendship wise.
Mike
A lot of culture with BC football and when you come in as coach, like, how quickly do you have to, like, envelop the culture? Because you mentioned Matt Ryan, you mentioned Keakley. Like, I'm, I don't know if he had a relationship with those guys prior but they are a big part of B.C. and you want them to be a part of it moving forward. Like, how quickly do you establish those relationships?
Mark Seal
That's important. That's a. That. That is very, very important. I think within the first month or two that I was here, I tried to make contact with over 100 guys that played here. Just a phone call, a text, hey, man, really want you guys involved in the program. Come back and speak to us. You know, last year at spring practice had a lot of former players come by. Matt Hasselbeck and, you know, Matt Ryan and, you know, just a ton of guys. Matthias Kiwanuka we've made contact with, you know, Zay Flowers is a guy that's playing at a high level right now that stays in contact with the program, and there's several others, so. And from different eras, too. Right. Obviously, we mentioned Flutie and Gerard Fallon. They came into the locker room after a game that we won this past season. So, yeah, I think the alumni is a huge part of this program, and we try to do as good a job as we can of reaching out to them and keeping them involved all the time.
Mike
Do you feel like your history in the NFL, pro football, has helped you now in college because of the portal in nil, and you've had experience with that?
Mark Seal
I do think it helps to a certain extent. I mean, people say that, you know, hey, this is a lot like the NFL now. I mean, it's. It's a. It is when it comes to some things, but it's still not exactly like the NFL. I mean, I think that there. There's certain things that you have to, you know, understand about college, about Boston College that's different than the NFL. But there are things relative to, you know, how you value your team when it comes to, you know, name, image and likeness, when it comes to rev share how you're going to compensate your team. Okay, here's how we value the team. The way we value the team at Boston College would be different than the way we value the team at the Houston Texans, for instance. But the concept of. Of putting a value on a player is. Is similar. And so I think that's an area where we try to use our NFL experience and apply it to the best of our ability. There's other things, though, that are a lot different in, in, you know, my experience in both college and pro have. Have helped me here.
Mike
Who are your favorite three musical artists, Coach?
Mark Seal
Oh, I would say, without a doubt, Luke Combs. Love Luke Combs. I've got different music Tastes. So I'm going to tell you right now, Rick Ross. I love Rick Ross. The third one. You know, it's hard. It's hard for me to say, but I. You know, I like groups like U2, so I love Bono and there's many, many others. But I have a. If you looked at a playlist of mine, you'd see a lot of different. I love music and our players always. But we play music at practice and they're always like, let me see your playlist. And they just cannot believe what's on my playlist. It's different. There's everything from country to rap to hard rock to Metallica is up there. You know what I mean? Like, I love them all.
Mike
You'd be the first person ever to go Combs to Rick Ross ever in the history. Like, I. We were at the airport a few weeks ago. We saw Rick Ross's plane come in. Like, he's got a massive jet with his name on the side of it. Like, it is the greatest personalized license plate. It's his airplane with his name on the side of it. So you. Yeah, you know. Do you know him, Coach?
Mark Seal
I actually met him. I met him because when. When I was in Houston, we had Hard Knocks and in the type of rappers that I really like are the guys with the D. That's why I love Rick Ross. Got really deep voice in the way that he. The way that, you know, that he does his music is awesome to me. So I would say during practice, we would play some Rick Ross, and I would always say, I love Rick Ross on Hard Knock. So he came to a game that following year and I was able to meet him. It was pretty cool.
Mike
You talk about Hard Knocks. So none of the NFL teams wanted to do it this year, so they're going to go to Belichick at North Carolina. But what was that process like for you guys? Did it get kind of annoying, the cameras?
Mark Seal
It's a. That's a tough deal. That's a tough deal. Now, they. The people that run Hard Knocks are awesome. They. They do a really good job of, you know, communicating with you and telling you what it's going to be. But it is. At that time in Houston, it was 40 days and it was 24 7. So the cameras are on you. I mean, I. I had to. I would tell him, like, hey, I'm. I'm going to the. Use the restroom right now.
Mike
You don't need to follow me.
Mark Seal
You know what I mean? Like, it was like two cameras in your office. Cameras in every meeting cameras, in every team meeting, cameras on the field. It was, it was very. It was tough. It was tough. You know, a lot of people watch it. There's a lot of narratives that are formed from it. But, you know, look, ownership wanted it and, you know, that's what we did. But it was, it was definitely a difficult deal for me personally.
Mike
Narratives are a weird thing in television. I did a reality show, a competition show once, and they would just create storylines out of random things. They would pick and. And all of a sudden there was a story that was kind of true, but not really. Right. Is that's probably what they were doing, like picking, like cherry picking things and making stories out of them.
Mark Seal
Yeah, cherry picking certain things that maybe weren't as big of a deal as they made it to be. But again, you know, their job is to, you know, get as many viewers as possible. And they did. I think I want to say there was about 4 million people that watched every episode, which I guess at that time was a big deal. We were one of the few teams that made the playoffs after. Usually you go on Hard Knocks, you don't have a good season, but we were one of the few teams that actually made the playoffs that year after being on Hard Knocks. We kind of overcame. I think the other thing it creates on the team, which I didn't like, was it created like, okay, if you're doing a big story on this guy. Well, I want, I want something done on me and my family, you know, because we had a lot of great players on those. That team in Houston. You know, we had everybody from. We had hall of famers, we had J.J. watt, we had DeAndre Hopkins, we had Vince Wilfork on that team. We had, you know, a lot of Brian Cushing, some great players on that team. And it, you know, that's kind of what it causes. It's about creating your own brand in a team sport. While the, while the game is going on, that's not really conducive to building a team.
Mike
What are you guys doing right now football operation wise? Like what is the time of year do?
Mark Seal
So we just got done with a. Basically a seven week winter conditioning period. And then the guys are on spring break right now. And then when they come back, we start spring practice on Tuesday, March 11, which is about. It lasts about a month and it's about 15 practices, about three. Three practices a week for about five weeks. And then from there they head into summer training after final exams in May, they head into summer training after that.
Mike
Some Schools are not doing a spring game. Where are you guys on that?
Mark Seal
Yeah, I do. Look, I do kind of agree with that. I think here at bc, the reasons for not doing one will be that it's really not, you know, look, last year we had a spring game. It wasn't that well attended. You know, it's not a. It's not as big of a deal as it is as, you know, like when I was at Alabama, the 90,000 people there. So that's. It's not really a money maker. And then for us, you know, we, we're all about, in spring practice, the actual practice. So what we're going to do is we're going to produce kind of a behind the scenes, not a documentary, but something that shows our team in a good light relative to, to our spring practice. And that's how we'll, you know, market our program during the spring. But spring games, you know, I don't, I don't know how big they are anymore.
Mike
Coach, I'm going to ask in conclusion here about a few people specifically, and if you don't mind just giving me a little story about them. And I want to start with Castle because I'll be with him tomorrow. We do an NFL show. Can you give me a Matt Castle story? What comes to mind?
Mark Seal
Oh, my God. I got several Matt Castle stories. First of all, Matt was a guy that was so well prepared. And so when his time came in 2008, he was ready to go. And that, that's an example that I use all the time. Hey, you never know when your time's going to come. And that was in the very first game of 2008. I was the wide receiver coach and Tom got hurt and Matt had to step up and he did. We went 11 and five. I think we're one of the few 11 and five teams to not make the playoffs. You know, we had a good football team and Matt did a great job. But one of the best stories about Matt real quick is we had these quarterback meetings with Bill like once a week. They were awesome. And I've told this story before. You know, Bill would come in there and I learned a ton in these meetings. Bill, Bill did a great job of working with Josh and at that time and kind of coaching the quarterbacks up around, you know, quarterback play around the league in our practices, it was just. You learned a ton. But in this one particular meeting, Bill came in and he didn't have any stocks on. And so Castle is sitting there and, you know, it didn't smell great. And so, you know, Bill had taken his shoes off and he had his feet up and he's showing the film, and all of a sudden, Castle, like, Castle's like, what. What is that smell? And so everybody's kind of like, oh, my God. Like, Matt. Matt doesn't, as. You know, Matt does not really care about the awkwardness that he's creating. So he just said it again. He's like, what is that smell? And so then finally it was like Matt said, bill, is that your feet? And Bill just looked over at him and said, matt, just shut the F up. And we went right back to the film.
Mike
That's funny. I have two others. You mentioned JJ Watt. Can you give me a JJ Watt story?
Mark Seal
I mean, JJ Watt. I have a bunch of stories. One of the ones I tell a lot about J.J. watt is we were playing Baltimore, I think it was my first year there, and we had to win the game to have a shot to go to the playoffs. And so we drove down and scored. They get the ball back. Joe Flacco is their quarterback. They got a hell of a team, and they're driving basically to kick a winning field goal. I think we're up by two. And so, you know, they're throwing the ball and, you know, it's getting near the 50 yard line, getting not close to field goal range, but getting to that point where he had to. So there was kind of a stoppage in play. And basically Watt told me, hey, basically, if you use a timeout right here, I can catch my breath. I will win the game. It was almost like Babe Ruth calling his own shot, like, I'll sack the quarterback. I'll. I'll win the game. So I did. I used the timeout, gave. Gave JJ a little bit of a rest. And the very next play, he comes off the edge, strip, saps, strip, sacks. Joe Flacco covered a fumble. We win the game.
Mike
That's so legit. One final, one final one. We're able to see not only Coach Belichick, who I met at super bowl last week, and he was, like, personable, not like what I would see on television. And this same thing with Saban, like, press conference. Nick Saban's different than, like, media Nick Saban. What was it like? Like, give me a Coach Saban story, because you went over there for a bit. What was he like to work under?
Mark Seal
Oh, Nick was great to work under. I. I learned a ton from him because I hadn't been in college football for a long time. And he. He brought a great, you Know, he brought insight into how an organization really runs like it was like clockwork. You know, if the meeting was going to start at 7:30, it started at 7:30. And he had a, he had a great routine about, you know, football recruiting, medical, academics, nutrition. You know, he had a really good outline of how the program would work and what we covered on a daily basis. And offensively he would bring a lot of defensive knowledge to our offense to help us game plan. So, you know, he, he taught me a lot and I. Very demanding coach, very disciplined coach. You could tell right away why he won so much there, the way we practice, the way we did things on a daily basis. But yeah, he was great to work for.
Mike
One final BC question, I was looking at you guys home versus away record and your home record I think was 6 and 1 if I'm accurate here. Yeah. What about playing there? What, what do you want to be difficult for other teams when they come in?
Mark Seal
Yeah, I think we have to continue to really get our crowd going. When we have a good crowd here, which we did, Michigan State, Syracuse, it's a, it's a smaller stadium but it can get loud. And I think that's the key, like if we can give people a good product to cheer for. We have great student body here. They come to every game. We have 9,000 students and they all come to the game. And that's a big part of our stadium experience. But I think we've got to do as good a job as we can of continuing to sell the stadium out so that we can create a really good home field advantage with our crowd because I think that's, that really helps us a lot.
Mike
Well, our show's on the bowl in Boston and I love the BC colors, I love the jerseys, uniforms, and now that we're buddies, I'm in. Coach, I'm fully in. I'm in.
Mark Seal
Come on up, Bobby. We'd love to have you at a game anytime.
Mike
I appreciate it, coach.
Mark Seal
The whole deal.
Mike
Thank you, coach, and have a great week. Good luck with spring ball and yeah, hopefully I get to come up this year. See you, coach.
Mark Seal
That'd be awesome. Thank you, Bobby. Appreciate it.
Bobby Bones
Make some noise for the greatest shooter of all time, Steph Curry. We went live from All Star Weekend for a new podcast called Goat Greatest of their Era. And we ranked our top five shooters from the 2000s.
Eddie
Major five, Dirk Forest.
Mike
Peja is elite.
Bobby Bones
Okay, okay.
Mark Seal
I'm mad him.
Mike
I left him off my list, but I still like my list.
Bobby Bones
You won't believe who Steph left off his list.
Eddie
That's so tough. That's why we have these conversations. That's why we absolutely love it.
Bobby Bones
Steph talked about what separates the truly elite NBA shooters.
Eddie
When you have a scouting report and you're on the list as not just a shooter, but we have specific rules for how we guard you. There's a fear factor that's associated with anytime you're wide open. Like, you might as well just count that and get on back on defense.

Mike
When I thought we were friends? We are friends.
Tisha Allen
Los Angeles, 2021. A friendly neighbor appears out of nowhere and promises to make all my dreams come true.
Dr. Joy
Let's not forget that David Bloom was.
Mike
A professional con artist.
Dr. Joy
So you didn't stand a chance.
Tisha Allen
But my dreams soon turned into a nightmare.
Mark Seal
Bloom generally targeted people with money, and.
Mark Seal

Dr. Joy
Dr. Joy Here you may know me from therapy for Black girls, where we're celebrating 400 episodes of the podcast.
It's sisterhood. But it is also, I think, focusing on. On learning how to cope with really.
Dr. Joy
Difficult things that are happening with insights like these. This 400th episode celebration is one for the books. Listen to therapy for black Girls on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Mike
A couple things. The rules committee for NCAA football has come up with a fresh idea they hope will combat the trend of faking injuries. The proposed rule would see a team charged an injury timeout. If a player goes down with an injury after the ball is spotted for the next play and medical personnel enter the field, if a team's out of timeouts, there'd be a five yard penalty for delay a game. All proposed rules from the committee must be approved on April 16th of this year. They got to do something. I don't know if this is it. This sounds pretty fair. I like, if somebody goes down throughout the whole series, like, if somebody has to come on, they got to be out the whole series.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
There's probably a reason, a common sense reason. They don't go with my reason. There's probably something dumb I'm not thinking about. But I felt like. And you know what? The people that complain about it are the people whose teams don't do it because they're not good enough to really like. It's a strategic thing. If I were a coach, I think I would have them faking it better. Because sometimes they're just like. And they drop. They're like. Or you smile on their face. Yeah.
Nathan King
Or you seem like, oh, I'm supposed to drop.
Mark Seal
Yes.
Mike
Yes. We would eliminate that immediately.
Nathan King
And it's a team effort because then the trainers come out and they're faking.
Mike
It and they're giggling, they're texting, they're standing over someone's ankle playing Candy Crush.
Nathan King
It's definitely a team effort. A bunch of fakers.
Mike
That's what we would do. We would make sure to do it right. So it has to be fixed, though. But the teams like Ole Miss, the teams that do this a lot, like, I'm jealous of that. Because they strategically use it to position themselves better in games, to win games. We just don't win enough games.
Nathan King
Yeah, but if you, if you were to say like your rule of where you just. You're out of the whole drive. Right. Is that your rule?
Mike
Yes.
Nathan King
Then you just throw. It's like hockey. Throw in the enforcer. Like, throw in. Hey, Tommy, you've been never played this whole year. Like, get in there. I need you to fall. It's okay. You're going to miss the entire game anyway. No big deal.
Mike
Oh, but if you do that. They can't come in without a play. Run and fall. You can't check into the game and get injured before a play runs. Right?
Nathan King
You have to play that one play.
Mike
But you find, you find that vulnerability. If I'm a quarterback and I see Tommy, who's never played, if I see number 63 playing corner.
Nathan King
Wait a second.
Mike
You don't think we're picking on Tommy?
Nathan King
Yeah, yeah, good point.
Mike
March Madness coming up. You excited about it or no?
Nathan King
I need it. I need March Madness. Gosh, I cannot wait. And it's really cool because it all surrounds my birthday. Like, it's March 21st. It usually starts around that time. And so my birthday, instead of like happy birthday on the wall, my wife puts Happy March Madness on the wall. It's a whole family thing. But more importantly, dude, I'm starting to bet on NASCAR and golf. Like, I need. I need something else. Like this weekend, I was betting on golf. I had no idea who was playing. I saw Jordan Spieth in there. He wasn't doing too well. Ricky Fowler, he wasn't doing great. The rest of the guys had no idea who it was.
Mike
I was watching the Arkansas, South Carolina game, which is horribly embarrassing because we got beat by a team that had one conference win. And we're trying to get in the tournament. And so we drop and it's like 15 to 3 and the game starts and I'm like, well, we're not going to lose by this much. I had like $900 on my account. I put it all on like Arkansas plus 8. We got crushed. I lost $900 because I was like, there's no way this is going to happen all game. They're so bad. South Carolina. No, they. They crushed us.
Nathan King
They took the lead early. Right, and you guys never caught up.
Mike
We barely had 10 points in the, in the half. I think we had 14 points in half.
Nathan King
That's right.
Mike
It was the worst half of Arkansas Razorback basketball in like 20th century.
Nathan King
Maybe maybe 17. You might have had 17 points. 15, maybe.
Mike
Whatever it is, it was the worst.
Nathan King
I did see that. I'm like, oh, my gosh, they cost me $400. They were the only leg I didn't hit on a nine leg parlay.
Mike
Well together, thirteen hundred dollar loss. We should send Calipari.
Nathan King
I did lose one dollar, though.
Reed Yarberry
Technically one unit.
Mike
Oh, that's true. So again, fair enough. You lost one.
Nathan King
Yes.
Mike
I lost 900. Kevin's not here. He got married. He's gone.
Mark Seal
Hey, Kiff.
Mike
He's on honeymoon.
Reed Yarberry
I guess he's on some Tropical.
Mike
Yeah, he's on holiday.
Nathan King
On holiday.
Mike
On holiday. We didn't go to the wedding. I mean, I didn't go to the wedding.
Nathan King
I didn't know. I think it was a very private wedding. But I heard that he had a. Like a celebration afterwards, and somebody told me, like, are you coming?
Mike
I'm like, wait, somebody? A co worker?
Nathan King
Yeah, co worker. And I was like, I have not heard of this. Oh, that's awkward. And I feel like Reed probably went, did you go read.
Kevin
You didn't go. Dude.
Mike
Did you go?
Kevin
I didn't go.
Mike
Did you get invited?
Kevin
No. No.
Nathan King
Yeah.
Mike
I think there's a co worker here. Yeah, that went.
Nathan King
That went. He's like, oh, yeah. Like, it's just. He said it's just kind of a small get together. Well, that sounds like something we would go to.
Mike
I'm starting to think we're not as good a friends with Kevin as we think.
Nathan King
I know. And I'm not one of, like, get my feelings hurt, whatever. But, like, when that co worker told me, I'm like, my feelings are hurt.
Mike
I wouldn't have gone. I would like to have been invited.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah.
Mike
But I probably wouldn't have. Yeah, that's my thing. But, like, I try to include Kevin and like, all the friend stuff. Like maybe. Maybe we're just not close friends. Who's the co worker?
Nathan King
McKitty.
Mark Seal
What?
Mike
He's not even part of, like, the core group.
Nathan King
Not even part of the circle.
Mike
What?
Kevin
I was thinking Pitts.
Nathan King
No, even that.
Kevin
Yeah, him and. Him and Pittsburgh.
Mike
I took him to the Super Bowl.
Kevin
Yeah.
Nathan King
Yeah, I know. Did you get. You didn't hear anything about it.
Kevin
I know. I heard nothing about it.
Mike
Wow.
Kevin
I know. The wedding was in Franklin, which I live in Franklin, but.
Nathan King
Next door to Reading.
Reed Yarberry
I could see it from his back.
Kevin
Nah, it was small. I get it. You know, I'm going.
Nathan King
No, the wedding. I completely. It's like when I got married, I got married in Hawaii, and my. My parents, her parents, her brothers, her sisters, my brother and sister went and that was it. And then.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah, I had a small wedding, too.
Nathan King
When we got back, then we're like, hey, we're having a party for everyone now. Let's come celebrate our marriage. And so I understand the wedding. You want to keep it private. No big deal. But having a party afterwards and we didn't get invited.
Mike
Yeah, that's a tough one. Got a little hurt. I can feel that.
Nathan King
Yeah.
Kevin
You got invited to his baptism, though.
Mike
I didn't.
Kevin
Oh, well, some of Us did.
Mike
Like, I could have easily sold his ticket and made $4,000. I gotta ship them back. I didn't have to take you guys to the Super Bowl.
Nathan King
Oh, that.
Mike
I realized that that wasn't even, like, this show. It was like, take your friends. We'll give you four tickets. It's in my contract I negotiated, and that was awesome. I'd rather taking Casey now.
Reed Yarberry
Yeah, man.
Mike
And Casey was the last one in. He hasn't been here long enough.
Reed Yarberry
I would have played Connect 4. Whatever, man.
Nathan King
Yeah.
Mike
Oh, my gosh.
Nathan King
So we'll give him a hard time when he gets back. If he gets back.
Mike
I may not, because I may be too hurt to actually give him.
Reed Yarberry
Disown him right now.
Mike
Because if you ever hear me giving someone a hard time, like, on the air or talking about something, it's because it. I've either gotten over the fact that it affects me or it never really affected me. And we can just poke at it. It's why we make fun of each other so much on the vibe, own show, or even this show. Because it doesn't matter. Like, if we're talking about it, we're making fun of each other. It's fine. The only times when Lunchbox, like, goes rage box. Other than that, that's never fun.
Nathan King
That's not fun for anyone.
Mike
That's never fun. Other than that, I get made fun.
Kevin
Of all the time, man.
Nathan King
Right? It's part of it.
Mike
You're not a victim, by the way. I love it. How about that? Well, good luck, Kevin, with your marriage. Hey, Mike.
Nathan King
Yeah?
Mike
I didn't start with this, but. So an update on the pickleball Bobby versus the troll matchup. I need a lawyer.
Nathan King
Oh, yeah, Lawyer up.
Mike
No, I need. So I don't want to get scammed for the money, okay? There are too many scams out there. I need a lawyer to create a.
Mark Seal
What would it be called?
Mike
Escrow? Yes. Thank you.
Nathan King
This, like, dang, like, when you buy.
Mike
A house and then we both put money in the account. But the thing is, if he were like, my lawyer will do it. I'd be like, I don't trust you. I don't know you. Yeah, yeah, A neutral lawyer, but I'm a public figure. I feel like it'd be safer to do it with, like, a lawyer for me, because he could just get on social media and be like, right, this dude stole a thousand bucks from me.
Nathan King
Can we just get Morgan and Morgan.
Mike
I don't want to pay anybody, though.
Nathan King
It's for the people, man.
Mike
Will someone work Pro bono and create an escrow so I can go play pickleball against this guy in Ohio, this troll 4 year D1 athlete. But I'm willing to take that chance. I'm willing to take down a troll.
Nathan King
Yeah, you are.
Mike
But I need someone to hold the money or I can't do it because I'm still in. I want to do it. I just don't want to get scammed of a thousand bucks.
Kevin
You couldn't just write up a contract either and have them sign it and have someone witness the signing that he's gonna pay.
Mike
Are you a notary public? I mean, is that what you're saying?
Kevin
I just mean like instead of like him putting money into an account, you putting money into an account.
Mike
I don't trust it. What's he gonna break it? I'm gonna sue him.
Kevin
Yeah, that's true.
Nathan King
Yeah, but like what? Like we have a lot here. Like we can't. We can't steal a thousand dollars. Like that would be bad.
Mike
That's why I was saying yes, it would be easier to go. I've created an escrow. Here's my thousand bucks. Put yours in. I'm a public figure that is in a constant state of existing. I can't just go away or it's going to cost me way more than a thousand bucks. If I were to run to Mexico with this thousand bucks.
Nathan King
You want me to do it?
Mike
No.
Nathan King
You don't want me to hold the money?
Mike
No.
Nathan King
Question though. Like, if I did, I'm not going to hold the money. But if I did hold the money and you guys gave me. You gave me a thousand, dude gave me a thousand and I had $2,000 in a random account. Is that suspicious to the government?
Mike
No. 2000. No. 2 million, possibly. I think it's different. It's like going into a casino and if you've kind of been, you know, blackballed or and you're betting 25 bucks, they're probably not going to say much. But you start putting 25,000 bucks a hand down. Something like that. Probably something. Or sports betting, you know, if all of a sudden you never. College baseball is not bet on and you go put 10 grand on the under of Mississippi State, their 3pm Thursday game. Something's up with that. Yeah, something's up. Speaking of college sports, the kid that plays for Austin Peach, you watch him play?
Nathan King
Crazy dude. I'd never seen him before. He's got one arm.
Mike
Yeah, Hansel. Emmanuel Hansel. I've watched his TikTok stuff since he was in high school.
Nathan King
Oh, crazy dude. He's so good. He gets rebounds. Casey, have you seen him?
Reed Yarberry
No, I'm not. I'm looking at him right now.
Mike
Dude.
Nathan King
He wins rebound battles.
Mike
He lost his left arm when he was younger. Like a wall collapsed on him. And he's. Yeah, he's really good.
Nathan King
He dribbles it well and he shoots.
Reed Yarberry
With one arm, one handed. Yeah.
Nathan King
That's pretty crazy to be like, I had no idea. I was like, hold on, rewind. That. That guy have one arm.
Mike
In high school, he averaged. At Christian Academy in Kissimmee, Florida, he averaged 25.9 points, 11 rebounds, 6.9 assists, and 3.4 blocks per game.
Nathan King
Amazing. One arm, dude, if I lost an arm, I'm done.
Mike
Yeah, he's awesome. I followed him on Tick Tock. I was like, would see a story in high school. All right. I think we're.
Reed Yarberry
Look at him blocking shots.
Nathan King
No blocking, dude.
Kevin
Can you automatically say that he's gonna go?
Mike
Can you? What? No, because he'll cross you up and go to the left with his right arm.
Nathan King
I like how you're thinking, though.
Mike
Keep it.
Kevin
Keep it over here.
Nathan King
I guess State was right.
Mike
Travis Kelsey, I think he's playing right. He says he's coming back.
Nathan King
He says he's coming back. He's not done yet.
Mike
All right, good. So, I mean, I didn't care either way.
Reed Yarberry
Nah, I had a feeling he'd be back.
Mike
I'm not annoyed by him. I like Travis Kelce.
Nathan King
Me too.
Mike
Yeah, I'm not a hater. And then Justin Tucker's wife has his back. Amid allegations last week, Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker broke his month long silence amid allegations of sexual misconduct from 16 different massage therapists. Amanda Tucker says these are false allegations against her husband. Have caused so much hurt to our family. She asserts she believes in Justin, loves him and supports him fully. From espn. Do you think she believes him or she, like believes. If he's like, I didn't do any of this. All 16 of them are like, she.
Kevin
Wants to believe him.
Mike
Or do you think she's just joining the team?
Reed Yarberry
Like, I think it's blindly just supporting.
Mike
Yeah. We have no idea what's going on.
Nathan King
Like just a part of marriage, right.
Mike
For your husband, Even though you know the truth.
Nathan King
I mean, 16 and it's Justin Tucker. It's not like it's someone who's very, very, very famous and is a target like that. Pretty random. It's Justin Tucker.
Mike
All right. That's it. By the way, I have no opinion on if he did it or not. 16 is a high number, though, and they're all different people.
Reed Yarberry
Not good odds.
Mike
Yeah. Yeah. Thank you, guys. If you want to watch any of.
Kevin
The show at Bobby bones sports on.
