This is Doug Gottlieb from All Ball with Doug Gottlieb. Listen, I'm gonna get serious for a minute. The hate in our country is getting out of control. In fact, it's sadly at an all time high. But it's gonna take all of us to stop it. I mean, we're all on the same team in this country. So let's take a break from our hate so our team can regroup. We need to take a time out against hate. This is a podcast called 25 Whistles. Talking Football. And they all wear a whistle yet. Stupid. But what did you expect? It's a podcast called 25 Whistles.
Justin Jefferson
25 Whistles.
Doug Gottlieb
Welcome to the show. I have a lot of stuff to say because I feel like we had so many days of football and I kept notes the whole time and it's been like a month. I feel like things I'm talking about that we haven't talked about. It's like a month. We blow the whistle.
Justin Jefferson
I got you.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay. First, how much fun would it have been to pepper spray the other team's players?
Justin Jefferson
So much fun.
Doug Gottlieb
Now, look, I got a lot to say about the Ohio State Michigan game. But imagine that you are a police officer and you're an Ohio State fan police officer. Because I'm imagining that if you're a police officer officer from Ohio at the Ohio State game, you're probably sad that you lost the game. That's a terrible loss. Imagine the cathartic release when you got to pepper spray Michigan players. Yep. You know, they were like, rivalry's real. Right in their face. So I got a lot to say. But first of all, those cops and I know they're being investigated. Things are under investigation. Nothing's gonna happen.
Justin Jefferson
You know, can't pepper spray someone messing with your logo. Yeah, you can.
Doug Gottlieb
No, you can't. Oh, now they might have pepper sprayed finger quotes because things were getting out of hand and they worried about someone being in danger and. But all I was thinking was, you know, those Ohio State police officers freaking love pepper spray and Michigan players. Yeah, that's first part of that. The second part of that is it's not even about flag planning. It's about there is not a worse look than losing a game and then getting into a fight on the field.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
And that happened many times. Not even just the flags. I saw Arkansas do that, and that's my team. I saw Arkansas try to fight after the game against Missouri. If you lose, you lost. Get off the field, losers. Now, that could be any team any year. But you lost. There is not a more I'm sad and insecure than fighting somebody after you just lost the fight on the field.
Justin Jefferson
That's a terrible look.
Doug Gottlieb
So don't fight. Once you lose, you feel like fighting. Get off the field. The flag planning. Hilarious. Now they're gonna have to stop flag planning.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, for sure.
Doug Gottlieb
Here's what I wrote on my Instagram and my Twitter. I wrote, you can't actually get the flag into the ground to stick. So why aren't these people like Running out with a nice sand base, they can. In a stand, they could put the flag in, and then.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, gently put the flag on there.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, you just take a sand base out, you have somebody who's running the flag out, and behind them, you run out of a sand base that's in a. Like, a concrete contraption. You set that down, then you put the flag in, and then you protect it because it ain't going in the field.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, is that the whole point, them actually sticking a dagger into your logo?
Doug Gottlieb
Well, that's the idea. It's the dagger in. But if you get it to stand, that would be awesome.
Justin Jefferson
That would be nice.
Doug Gottlieb
I think Baker Mayfield showed us. It ain't going to stick. Those fields are not for things to stick in. So here are the three things. Number one, it must have felt good to pepper spray a Michigan player, because, you know, they were like, we really need to pepper spray this. Everybody's got pads done. Because you didn't hear any Ohio State players being like, oh, my eyes.
Justin Jefferson
No, no, no.
Eddie
Yeah. All the missing.
Doug Gottlieb
Number two, if you lose and you fight, you're just a big titty baby.
Eddie
Titty baby.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah. Get off the field.
Justin Jefferson
Never heard that before.
Doug Gottlieb
Me neither. And I'm saying this as we lost Arkansas, my team lost, and we tried to fight Missouri. You lost. What are you going to do? Win that one. That one doesn't count. And you may get suspended again. So don't fight after you lose. If you feel like fighting, just get off the field because you're going to look like even more of a chump.
Eddie
Do you put that on the coach at all?
Doug Gottlieb
I put that on the culture.
Eddie
Okay.
Doug Gottlieb
And number three, if you're going to plant a flag, you can go to, like, Home Depot and get a flag holder. You just have two people carry it out. One carries a flag, one carries out the weighted base flag holder.
Justin Jefferson
You can buy weights and you just.
Doug Gottlieb
Lay it down there. Then you put the flag in it. Then you stand around it. The end. I fixed it.
Eddie
That would be legit.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah. Clip that. Oh, it's clipped already. Clip that. You know, those cops are like, oh, yeah.
Eddie
You guys ever been pepper sprayed?
Doug Gottlieb
Not straight on, but, like, secondarily.
Justin Jefferson
Was that because they did that in your hallways at school?
Doug Gottlieb
Oh, I know. No, because we did it a bit on the show and I was too close to it. Oh, yeah.
Justin Jefferson
Is that what Mike D got sprayed?
Doug Gottlieb
No, I sprayed my D and ran.
Eddie
Yeah. Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
But he was the one asking about it. Next up, if you have three losses and you're trying to get in the College Football Playoff. Don't cry when you don't get in. Now, I will say if there's a three loss team that gets in, good for you because one may. But you can't cry if you lost three times. I'm not saying all three lost teams are absolutely eliminated because we could see what happens where SMU's playing Clemson, right in the ACC title game. If Clemson wins, they're not getting in. So what? Clemson wins, they'll get in. If SMU wins, Clemson will not get in. So that could just be one team going in. So there could be a three win in Alabama, South Carolina, Ole Miss that they get in. But if you're a three lost team, shut up. You lost, you can state your case. But you lost. You don't deserve to have people feel sorry for you. You lost. Yeah, if you lost three games, you still might get in. But don't cry like a little titty baby.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, yeah, use that term again when.
Doug Gottlieb
You don't get in. Three losses eliminate you from crying. It almost eliminates you from getting in, but it does eliminate you from crying. So I'd like to say that.
Justin Jefferson
Are you directing that towards this certain team?
Doug Gottlieb
I am not. Actually, it's all of them. I was watching on Twitter, now known as X and Lane Kiffin had posted a thing going, let's break it down. We beat this, they beat that, we beat this, they beat that streak. The schedule bit, the bit, the bit. And I'm like, what I like about Lane Kiffin is also what I don't like about Lane Kiffin. Like he doesn't shut up. Yeah. And it's hilarious and it's annoying and it's great. It's great for the sport. Brett Bielema then posts. Hey, great logic. Let's use your same logic and just annihilates Lane Kiffin with his logic with a higher strength of schedule with three losses. So if you have three losses and you don't get in, don't cry. If you have three losses and you do happen to get in. Hey, good for you. You're really lucked out. That's number two club day. Oh, it's clipped around. I was like saying clip it makes me feel cool. Next up, Penn State, James Franklin. So they keep scoring. At the end of that game, you can always tell when two coaches meeting at midfield have a moment, even if it's not super obvious because they hug a little too long. Oh, yeah, there are a couple people that hug a little too long. Creepy uncles and coaches aren't happy with each other. And they were hugging a little too long at the end of that game. And so they go after. And James Franklin was super upfront about it. He goes, yeah, we scored. He goes, what do you mean to do? I put in the threes and the fours, meaning third string and fourth string players. I'm not supposed to let them play football.
Justin Jefferson
That's right.
Doug Gottlieb
I'm not supposed to let them play. And I thought to myself, I agree, he said, but they've been working hard. They shouldn't get to play football. But that's what the coach from Maryland was having a problem with. The game ended up 44 to 7. It was not really a game, but yeah, it was third string of fourth string guys who they should get to play. And I can tell you this as a team, team that's been had the crap beat out of them when Ole Miss is beating us 109 to 2. A few weeks ago I was like, yeah, the second and third string and fourth string guys, they should, if they can score, they should score. They play. This is their opportunity. You don't want them to score. Stop them.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
The only time that I would say that is not the case is if you're playing like Baldinger State.
Justin Jefferson
Sure.
Doug Gottlieb
And they're playing eight man football while you've got all 11. And that happens sometimes. But I thought that the Maryland coach was kind of a wimp. I wouldn't say it to his face. He's bigger than I am. Much bigger. He'd probably hug me for way long and I wouldn't like that because he's strong. But he was complaining about it and he said it was bull s. But I thought James Franklin was right on. He's like, what do you want me to do? Because he could have put third and fourth in and just run the ball the whole time. But also like your quarterback yelling him throw a little bit. Yeah, I had no problem with them throwing. I liked it. The hugs though are hilarious.
Justin Jefferson
How long did they hug?
Doug Gottlieb
Well, so what, what started off as a hug turned into kind of a mini headlock.
Eddie
Yeah, you could tell.
Doug Gottlieb
I know. And then if you fight out of the mini headlock, then you can tell there was something going on.
Justin Jefferson
That's awesome.
Doug Gottlieb
And what I admired about James Franklin was he didn't fight out of the mini headlock because he also did not want that to seem like it was more than what it was. You could tell it was after about 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi, 4 mini headlock, 4 Mississippi, 5 Mississippi. Then they split off.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
I could not agree more with James Franklin saying this is by somebody who gets a school run up on him sometimes too. So it's not like I'm a Bama fan and I'm like, yeah, let him score. But Spurrier said it best. It's your job to stop us, especially.
Eddie
If you're playing the ones he said. Maryland still had their ones in and.
Doug Gottlieb
They were playing cover zero. So what do you expect them to do? Well, you could expect them just to run it, eddie. No. Cover zero.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah. It means you cover no. 1.
Doug Gottlieb
No covers zero. No.
Eddie
Good guess.
Doug Gottlieb
That means. That means it's main coverage. There's. There's zero people back there in case. Like a safety. Oh, it's full, man.
Justin Jefferson
Got it. Yeah, man to man.
Doug Gottlieb
But covers you can play man to man with like a safety plan. Zone.
Justin Jefferson
So I've seen cover five. What's that? I've seen that on Madden.
Doug Gottlieb
Cover five is not really a thing like a cover. Okay, quick breakdown.
Justin Jefferson
Okay.
Doug Gottlieb
Cover two, this is going to be very generic and rudimentary. Split. Split safeties are playing half the fields. Right. And you can play a zone. Cover two, you can play a man. Cover two. Cover three, you're playing thirds of the field. You can go a Cover 4. There are different versions of COVID 4.
Justin Jefferson
So is this just for the DBs, for the safeties in the back?
Doug Gottlieb
It could be. You can also drop a linebacker and let's say blitz a safety. And you're playing through so roughly.
Eddie
Yeah. Multiple variations to it, but yeah, that's.
Doug Gottlieb
Yes, roughly. That would be cover zero is you're playing man coverage and there's zero people back there. In case there's an accident, someone gets behind everybody. That'd be my mistake in ncaa. Every single time. Yeah. Yeah.
Eddie
Engage eight.
Doug Gottlieb
I don't even know what that is. Engage eight. Though there's still one guy back.
Eddie
Oh, that's true.
Doug Gottlieb
Cover 69.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
You don't want to know. You don't. Hey, follow my only f. Hey.
Justin Jefferson
Hey. Cliff it.
Doug Gottlieb
Clip it. Clip it.
Justin Jefferson
Did you see the Georgia. Georgia Tech hug? Because that was a very long hug.
Eddie
But they were crying.
Justin Jefferson
They were crying though.
Doug Gottlieb
They were happily hugging. Yes, that was. The other hug was almost a headlock. This hug almost turned into a make out.
Justin Jefferson
Correct.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
So confession about that game. Georgia tech was up 17 0. I think I got some sort of like neurovirus and I. It was so bad. I was sleeping on. I was at somebody else's house for Thanksgiving. I was sleeping on towels on the bed. Oh.
Justin Jefferson
Just in case.
Doug Gottlieb
Because I was throwing up and had diarrhea and so 17 0. I was like, well, this game's probably over and I was in Arkansas, so I couldn't bet it because I would have bet Georgia and I couldn't and I was. The neurobice is like 48 hours. Right. And I. I didn't make it and I woke up, it's all eight overtimes.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, eight overtimes. If you would have bet Georgia, you would have been puckered the entire end of that game because it just kept going back and forth.
Doug Gottlieb
I watched it and hey, watch the biggest plays because you can do that on YouTube. TV.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah.
Eddie
And 20 minutes long.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, dude. That's what it felt like, dude.
Doug Gottlieb
Haynes King is like, he's.
Eddie
Yeah, he's awesome.
Doug Gottlieb
That dude is a boss.
Eddie
Yeah. So I almost texted you because I. That overtime, we've talked about it recently.
Doug Gottlieb
That's the stupidest thing ever.
Eddie
I was sitting there with my girlfriend, she's like, they're not done yet.
Doug Gottlieb
Stop with the one place you don't like it.
Justin Jefferson
I feel like it's almost like a boxing match. Like, oh, I missed.
Doug Gottlieb
No, no, it's not boxing.
Justin Jefferson
The slapping.
Doug Gottlieb
That's it. Yeah. Okay.
Justin Jefferson
Didn't knock me down. My turn.
Doug Gottlieb
And I don't think because if it goes to like the national championship and it's in a two point conversion, that's a disaster.
Eddie
That's gross.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, I don't mind first overtime. Normal. Second overtime I think is also normal where you take turns and you kick field goal. I think is the third overtime.
Eddie
No, it's second now.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay.
Eddie
I thought it was a third.
Doug Gottlieb
Two seconds. Go for two. I don't mind it being go for two every time with the play.
Justin Jefferson
Sure.
Doug Gottlieb
Like I had mentioned and I'm not sure which if it was today or maybe to Brandon last week. I think in overtime you start at the 50. I hate that you can just kick a field goal immediately without having to do anything. Started the 50, if it's even after that, then you go to the 45.
Justin Jefferson
Then to the 40, slowly make your way up.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, I like that. But what do I know?
Justin Jefferson
You know what I don't like is that when they like they two, the two teams go for the two, then the one that last did it goes next.
Doug Gottlieb
Snake draft.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, Snake draft style. I don't like that so much.
Doug Gottlieb
It's it. I hate it that it's all two point conversions because you also saw them run out of plays like four inches.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, yeah. Oh, for sure.
Eddie
Was it Georgia Tech with the crazy formation? Didn't they have one that was like, oh, yeah.
Justin Jefferson
They have five guys, even linemen. Five linemen on the left side, which is pretty crazy.
Eddie
Like, all the way to the sideline, and then they ran a play to the right. Yeah, correct.
Doug Gottlieb
Dance Dance Revolution out there. They don't even know what's going on. Like, I don't know, man. Go out there and do something.
Eddie
And they have to go from one side of the field to the other. It's just like, what are we doing here?
Doug Gottlieb
I didn't like that. I didn't watch it until later because I think I'd have been puckered the whole time, but I was. I was a little ill at that one. Don't worry about clipping that one. Oh, yeah, I got you. I got a couple more. Trevor Lawrence's.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, come on.
Doug Gottlieb
Slide. And his head almost getting ripped off. I will say, first of all, very dirty.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
Dirty play. I have a way to fix this, though. I know you guys thought, oh, oh, I know you guys thought, yeah, Bobby not gonna have a way to fix this.
Justin Jefferson
I thought you were just gonna complain about it.
Doug Gottlieb
I got a way to fix it so that. And by the way, he did end up tweeting, hey, I'm okay.
Justin Jefferson
Thank goodness.
Doug Gottlieb
I don't know if it means he's really okay or he can just tweet.
Eddie
Or his wife or he got somebody.
Justin Jefferson
Else to do it.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
But that was a bad hit. And I haven't seen, as of now what the punishment is going to be, because it was elbow. It was. It was. He was going down elbow up. So what has happened here in general, and I think we saw this a bit in a different way with Caleb Williams. These quarterbacks are really trying to push it to the last minute before they slide or get out of bounds. And you saw with Caleb Williams, he was going kind of out of bounds, and he stopped to try to get extra yard, and then he got hit and his leg got bent back. We saw Kenny Pickett, which is not. This is not allowed anymore, but Kenny Pickett with the fake slide and back up. These quarterbacks are waiting till the last minute to slide. And so I'm not saying that this was right in any way whatsoever, but these defensive players now have got to go like. And sometimes quarterbacks will just slow down and then take off again, not even faking, like, the slide. That's the new cheat.
Eddie
Mahomes has done that a lot.
Justin Jefferson
Yes, okay. But they. If they mark you down where you Start the slide. That's kind of why I think they're waiting so much. Like, I need to get a little further.
Doug Gottlieb
But I'm just talking about the injury part of it. I'm talking about them getting hit.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, but that's the reason they're not sliding so quickly, I think. I'm not a quarterback.
Doug Gottlieb
But again, all I'm talking about is the injury part of it where people are getting killed because they're. These defensive players are coming and running as hard as they can, going, time to kill, kill, kill. He's still up. And then all of a sudden, they got a pullback. Last minute, the hit was still dirty. That pissed me off. The other player should not have been ejected for beating the crap out of him. This is what they should have on their. Their uniforms. Quarterbacks. They should have basically an eject button. Now follow me here.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, where they get out of their uniform?
Doug Gottlieb
Well, it's not eject out of the uniform, though. It's like an airbag that comes out.
Kevin
Oh.
Doug Gottlieb
Like as soon as you hit.
Justin Jefferson
It's like a big sumo suit.
Doug Gottlieb
Yes. As soon as you. You don't got to slide, but as soon as you hit the su. Poof bubble hits you, you are frozen right there.
Justin Jefferson
Everything ends up looking like those helmet pads that they're wearing now.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, check those sito, cuz. Imagine that, though, because you know as soon as you hit it, that's the yard line you're on. So you're running. It's like on your hip. Run, run, run. Hit the button. One, you get crushed. Doesn't matter. You're in an airbag. Number two, it's instantaneous. You can see exactly where the airbag went off. And then. Oh, my God.
Justin Jefferson
This is genius.
Doug Gottlieb
No, tell me this is not right.
Justin Jefferson
It's probably a little pricey, but genius.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, I see the NFL makes billions of dollars a year.
Justin Jefferson
I'm just saying this is fun to see.
Doug Gottlieb
And if good quarterbacks get hurt, that costs everybody.
Justin Jefferson
Right.
Doug Gottlieb
So if there was some way to have even a top half. Half air. Like, as soon as you're. You want to call it out, anybody hits you? No, you're in an airbag. Two, we know exactly where it happened.
Justin Jefferson
Does the tackler bounce once he hits? Like, whoa. It was like a trampoline.
Doug Gottlieb
Don't know how big the airbag is yet. I would say it doesn't have to be that dramatic.
Eddie
I'm thinking like the bottom of a pile and somebody hits it, and everyone just goes flying.
Justin Jefferson
It's like video game.
Doug Gottlieb
It could be in a can thing. But there needs to be some sort of, like, alert.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
All kidding aside, alert as to when that's happening, because otherwise you should be able to hit the quarterback because they're sliding late, they're strategizing how to slide differently to get the most yards. They're faking stepping out of bounds. And we have to keep our quarterback safe because we've seen this. When our quarterbacks get hurt, nobody cares to watch the games because they're terrible. It's all Gardner Minshew on 36 teams for Guy.
Eddie
Right?
Doug Gottlieb
Clip that. Right.
Justin Jefferson
He was the nearest target.
Doug Gottlieb
Thank you. The final thing I want to say. Eddie, dear friend, second love of my life.
Justin Jefferson
What's up, man?
Doug Gottlieb
Eddie, dear friend, who claims he never looks at group chats or texts, never responds to them. Like, he's like, I don't even look at him. If you send in a group text, just send it to me privately, because I'm too good to look at a group text.
Justin Jefferson
I've never said I'm good, but that's what you do. But if it doesn't concern me, why do I even need to read it?
Doug Gottlieb
Group, it concerns you. You're in a Dallas Cowboys group with.
Justin Jefferson
Us, and they're all haters.
Doug Gottlieb
You're in a whistles betting group with.
Justin Jefferson
Us, and I contribute to that.
Doug Gottlieb
No, you don't. All of a sudden, we get a text from Eddie with a video going, happy Thanksgiving, boys. Look who at a parlay. The guy never even reads them, never responds to them. But finally, it's a $1 bet and wants everybody to know in the group text that he pays no attention to. So pick a side, huh? Either you're part of the group in the text or you're not. And if you're not, get out. And if you are, we're happy to read and congratulate you. None of us congratulated you because it wasn't.
Kevin
We were.
Doug Gottlieb
That we weren't happy for your parlay because I think you had like, a ten dollars. A ten. One with a dollar. And that's awesome, but it's because you're such a douche when it comes to being like, I don't read group text.
Justin Jefferson
Look, man, the Cowboys one can't stand it. A bunch of Cowboys haters in there. Even though they say they're big fans.
Doug Gottlieb
They are big fans. Those are the biggest cowboy fans I know, but it's also Mike D's in it. Yeah, big fan. But it's also okay to poke you po joke.
Justin Jefferson
Don't like it. So I don't even read it. The whistles one. I think there's a lot of good on Saturdays. That text thread is booming. I like seeing what you guys are watching, what you think about.
Doug Gottlieb
You never respond. You, you say you never respond.
Justin Jefferson
I don't respond.
Doug Gottlieb
No, you don't. You tell everybody what you sent. You can brag for a second, but I'm just saying low class.
Justin Jefferson
Guys, I made a seven game parlay again and let me tell you, this is the second that I've hit this season. I've never hit these big parlays and what week two or three. I hit a 10 gamer for $300 or something.
Doug Gottlieb
But you bet a dollar.
Justin Jefferson
I bet one dollar.
Eddie
We heard from you. Yeah, in the group chat.
Doug Gottlieb
You only come around when times are good. Don't be that friend.
Justin Jefferson
But that is so.
Doug Gottlieb
Don't be that friend.
Justin Jefferson
Don't you think that's so impressive?
Doug Gottlieb
Dude, I had parties all the time and I'll share them. I had parlays for like.
Justin Jefferson
You hit seven gamers.
Doug Gottlieb
I've had a couple of five and six gamers for like three and $4,000. I don't share them. I've share the occasional one. If I'm like guys, what should I do?
Justin Jefferson
You should post those. Those are cool.
Doug Gottlieb
No, but I'm also like invested in the group text. Like in general. Good times or bad times?
Justin Jefferson
I mean, I thought you guys wanted.
Doug Gottlieb
To see Johnny come lately we don't like that. So pick. You can either be a part of it. That doesn't mean you have to contribute every day, but you can be a part of it and respond with like thumbs ups. Haha's or not.
Justin Jefferson
I'm. I'm in.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay.
Justin Jefferson
I want in on this text group, but if I could like three of them.
Eddie
And you're on all of them.
Doug Gottlieb
I don't, I'm not a part of them. I don't want to be a part of them.
Justin Jefferson
So you're entering your feelings hurt if I don't respond.
Doug Gottlieb
We don't. But what we do go is what a douchebag. When you only do respond and it's only to show and brag about something.
Justin Jefferson
What's funny is whenever you text me like, hey man, they're asking you a question in the text group. Can you respond? Right, let me go check that.
Doug Gottlieb
That's what happened to that. Yeah. And so it's like, hey man, really? They need to know this. And he's like, oh, okay, I'll go look. But all of a Sudden, he hops on it. First thing, he finds it.
Justin Jefferson
You're right. And I think I grouped you guys into my family. One, because ever since my dad died and we went to the funeral, I think all the cousins and uncles got in this 20 person group. Dude, my phone doesn't stop buzzing.
Doug Gottlieb
I'm not in that one.
Justin Jefferson
I know. And I think you're just grouped into that.
Doug Gottlieb
No, that.
Justin Jefferson
When I was.
Doug Gottlieb
And you're not using your dad dying as a way to make us not feel sympathy.
Justin Jefferson
Come on.
Doug Gottlieb
No, that's wrong, dude. So that's all I'm saying. Pick a side. We'll respect it.
Justin Jefferson
I'm in.
Doug Gottlieb
That's not fair.
Justin Jefferson
I'm in. I'm in. As long as. Yeah, I'm in. I want to be part of the group. I like being part of the group. And. And I now see the importance of when you, like, want to celebrate something with your boys. You put in that text thread and.
Doug Gottlieb
You know what happened. We didn't celebrate crap with you. Nothing. We don't like you in that text.
Justin Jefferson
Nothing.
Doug Gottlieb
That's it.
Justin Jefferson
You called me out for not even responding. And then Reed said, you should have put more money on that.
Doug Gottlieb
Boom. Clip that.
Justin Jefferson
Clip it.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, I thought we were gonna hit our parlay.
Eddie
Hmm.
Doug Gottlieb
I thought daddy was gonna have to come in and actually enforce it.
Justin Jefferson
Daddy.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah. Tennessee minus 11. Hit that one. South Carolina plus two and a half. Hit that one. Hit that one big. And I'm gonna be honest with you. I shouldn't have let my emotions get to me because I wanted to. You could tell I wanted to go Texas, but I just couldn't pick. It just wouldn't come out. Texas A and M plus two and a half. They lost. So that was a parlay. We missed again. But somebody hit me up this weekend on Twitter and they were like, we're betting the parlay again, thanks for nothing. And I'm like, as we tell you, don't bet it.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, yeah. We say that up.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, we say it. Like, we gave you specific bets we feel good about. But the parlay, like, what do you want us to do? We're like, over. We're like one for 90.
Justin Jefferson
But to be fair, I even bet Port Noise. I think at one point I didn't hit that one either.
Doug Gottlieb
It's hard.
Justin Jefferson
It's hard, man. Unless you go with me on Sundays and seven gamers.
Doug Gottlieb
You're so stupid.
Justin Jefferson
I'm so stupid.
Doug Gottlieb
When you posted it, like, I was irrationally irritated at that. I could tell because I was like, what is he doing? He talks about how he doesn't want to be part of the group text but now he does when he likes to be celebrated. Scrolling down I didn't watch it. What?
Justin Jefferson
You didn't watch?
Doug Gottlieb
No.
Justin Jefferson
I'll resend it.
Doug Gottlieb
No, no thanks.
Eddie
You were. Was it you that sent that? You had a bunch like alternate spreads though, didn't you?
Justin Jefferson
No.
Doug Gottlieb
Really?
Justin Jefferson
No, no. These are spreads game time spreads.
Doug Gottlieb
Oh never mind.
Eddie
It was somebody else that text me this weekend that actually somebody who gets contribute. I get them mixed up sometimes.
Doug Gottlieb
Select two or more players and choose if they'll have more or less of a stack. I'm telling you the DraftKings pick six is awesome. So you can just do two or you can do more. They'll have more or less of a stat like receptions or touchdowns. Or like Bo next tonight. More or less than 219 passing yards. It's for sure more. Yeah. Bo Nexus about to be rookie of the year rookie.
Justin Jefferson
And you don't care.
Doug Gottlieb
Call him. Roy Nicks more. Cortland Sutton More or less than 64. More.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
Coral and Sutton more because we're always throwing him the ball. Let's go. Nick Chubb more or less than 56 rushing yards.
Justin Jefferson
On that one.
Eddie
And Broncos defense Pretty good.
Doug Gottlieb
It is. I go less on that one. David and Joku more or less than 46 receiving yards. I don't have an opinion on that one.
Justin Jefferson
Go less on that one. Less.
Doug Gottlieb
But anyway, you can do this and you pick when it's awesome. Download the new DraftKings Pick Six app and use the code. Bobby sports gambling problem call one inner gambler in Connecticut.

In the aftermath of a transformative election like the one we just had, it's hard to read the news without asking yourself every five seconds, how did we get here? That's exactly what we're always trying to figure out on Fiasco, a history podcast from the co creators of Slow Burn. In our first season, Bush v. Gore, we examine an unmistakable turning point in American politics. The 2000 election, which came down to a recount in Florida and ended with one of the most controversial rulings in Supreme Court. History. In many ways, it's the beginning of the story we're living through right now. So if you're trying to make sense of the present moment, check out Fiasco Bush v. Gore and find out how a statistical tie in the Florida vote count put the nation into an unprecedented holding pattern during which American voters waited with bated breath to find out whether Al Gore or George W. Bush would be the next President of the United States. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Doug Gottlieb
And now to our interview with three time Super bowl champion New England Patriot, Devin McCourty. Kevin, were you geeking out on this or no?
Eddie
Heck yeah. As soon as I saw him pop up on the calendar, I was like, what?
Doug Gottlieb
I didn't think about him being a Patriot and you being a Patriot, but boy, yeah, that's right. Because I. That's cool. Devin played 13.
Eddie
Yeah, that's cool.
Doug Gottlieb
That is cool. I didn't think about that. Devin played 13 years in the NFL as a defensive back. He was named Patriots all dynasty team and they're all 2010 team. And now he works for Sunday Night Football, does radio for Westwood One. Pretty cool. Here he is, Devin McCourty. Hey, Devin, man. Good to meet you. Appreciate the time.
Kevin
No, no problem.
Doug Gottlieb
Hey, I am actually pretty good friends with a guy that you went to college with and played in the pros, Logan Ryan. Like, that's like, that's like my dude. Like whenever you are, I mean, when you're in college and you and Logan, you guys played together for how many years?
Kevin
Just one year. Logue was there my last year.
Doug Gottlieb
And so did you guys both feel like you had the skills to play at the next level? And do you talk about that as guys who are like projected to go to the next level?
Kevin
I mean, I didn't when I first got to school, but by the time Logan was there, yeah, I knew my brother was already in the NFL. But Logan came in as like a four star recruit, so it was actually pretty cool. I moved my seat back in a meeting to sit between Logan and another corner. We had to try to teach them everything I knew in my last year before leaving.
Doug Gottlieb
So whenever you get up and you know you guys are both Rutgers guys, do you try to. Is he receptive to learning than what you have just learned or does every rookie kind of got to learn themselves the hard way?
Kevin
Nah, Log was really good. When he came in as a freshman, he was like, man, like, teach me everything you know. And then obviously fast forward, he came to New England the same way. And then it was cool for me to see once he left New England, like, he became that guy for all of his other teammates, the leader, the kind of example to set, you know, for everybody in a defensive room. So it was really cool to see him do that.
Doug Gottlieb
A few months ago, I was down at his house and he's got a pickleball court, like right out in the middle of everything. And he likes to dominate people at pickleball now because he had to find that outlet. What is your, what is your athletic outlet now that you will train or beat people in to feel good?
Kevin
Just really working out. I'll go down in the basement and work out and I'll still do stuff like that. But other than that, on vacation, you know what we'll do? We'll play pool, volleyball. And my wife got mad because I cut her off the team when we're in Mexico and picked up, picked up a free agent. It was, it was critical to our team's success. And I told her, she'll understand because when I win, she wins. But she, she wasn't too happy.
Doug Gottlieb
When you were a kid, were you ultra competitive?
Kevin
Yeah. When you grow up with a twin, like we were competitive and like we would play basketball and not keep score and legit will play basketball one on one outside for three hours or we play video games non stop until my mom told us either we turned off the video game where she was going to break the whole thing. We would just, we would just go out and as much as we went at it one on one, usually behind closed door with just us, we would be each other's biggest teammates. But from that standpoint, I think it kind of built the foundation of never really letting someone be better than you and out competing them and everything we did because you just naturally had a competitor with you and everything that you would pick up and do.
Doug Gottlieb
When I think about you, obviously I think about the Patriots and I wonder, as a guy who played at such a high level, won Super Bowls, when you have a season like this season with the Patriots and you love them, you were a part of them. And there is, hey, it's hard to root against your team, but you also know that if your team loses, you'll have a, you'll have better draft picks. Like, where do you fall with your love for the team and also your love for your team getting better because sometimes they don't match.
Kevin
Yeah, man, it's. It's hard. And I think the biggest thing you want when you're Looking at a team that you, you know, you're a fan of is you want the foundation to be set. And I think for the Patriots, you're trying to establish that this year. And I know it's been so much back and forth of, you know, the expectations and what people want. And, you know, I think for me, coming into this season, I'm like, if this team wins five or six games, that to me would have been a success story. Because where they were last year, everything that kind of transpired, and then the season starts and they lose some guys to injuries, they're struggling. I think the key is you start to look ahead, you look to see, all right, who's in a draft that might help this team. How can they get better in multiple places? Is it trading back and getting five players instead of getting two players? They're really trying to figure it out. I think the cool thing is doing the football stuff is I follow the Patriots, but I don't get to be fully indulged in just the Patriots trying to watch every other team and then honestly watching the good teams. And right now, my guys up in New England are not one of the good teams that you need to be watching week after week. But it's fun now. I get to watch their journey with a lot of my friends leading it and seeing what they're able to do. So it's been a journey this year. Not a. Not a fun one to watch, though.
Doug Gottlieb
So maybe not a fun one to watch either. But you are a professional. Do you root against the Chiefs because you don't want them to out dynasty you?
Kevin
I actually don't. I think it's unique to be able to watch a team do so many different things, and it's fun for me every week to go on and compare some of the things that they're doing to what we were able to do in all of the years I was on the Patriots. The ability to win games so many different ways, but also to win games and be talked about, of not winning by enough. Like, I. I've watched some sports things, and they'll pull up and they're like, the Chiefs points differential isn't high enough to make them one of the better teams in the league. I'm like, who, like you think the Chiefs care about how many points they win by? To me, they're the most feared team in the league. Like, no one wants to play them in the playoffs. But I honestly, for one, it gives me something to talk about, gives me a reason to have a job because of what we were able to do and, and it gives me a platform to talk about it and compare it. So I'm not one of those guys. I think history and what you're able to do, it's meant to be broken or meant to be mentioned with other people. And watching what the Chiefs were able to do, are able to do right now has been a lot of fun. I don't, I don't see it as, like, how do we continue to elevate our voices by being done. I know like the undefeated Dolphins team toast every year when the team loses that's been undefeated throughout the season, but for me, no, I think what they're doing is it's awesome to see and fun to break down. They're defying all odds.
Doug Gottlieb
Speaking of things that have just been fun to talk about, we can go either New York team. So let's go jets first. I don't even know where to start. We can go Rogers, we can go Salah, who is now over there working with the pac. Like, what is happening with the jets and what in the world can they do to be good in the next few years?
Kevin
Isn't it funny though? We, we talked about the jets and we were like, you know, so many people were like, salah, he's the problem. Get rid of Salah. This team was bad before, but when Robert Salah was fired, they were one win going in a Monday night game against Buffalo from being the division leaders. Since he's been fired, this whole thing has went even more downhill. And I know I live in New Jersey, so what people say and all of that stuff, they are all over. This has nothing to do with Salah, but you got to give the guy some credit that people think he was a poor leader and all of this. This team looks terrible now and to me, it just shines a light on what we see throughout the NFL a lot of times is the head coach, the general manager, they don't get to make the ultimate decisions. It's the owner. And Woody Johnson has put himself back in kind of the spotlight of, hey, we're going to get rid of Salah, we're going to get rid of Douglas. Hey, and by the way, I was the guy I wanted to bench Aaron Rodgers right around week four. So this team to me is a disaster. And you know, I was just on a pro football talk with Mike Florio and his thing is you fire Mike Tannenbaum years ago and now you hire Mike Tanenbaum's media company to help you put out the head coach. And general manager search and figure out how that's all going to work out. It. It just makes no sense. It seems like the jets, and it's sad to say, because I think they have one of the best fan bases in the NFL of. Of people just wanting to support and waiting for this team to do well. And they all thought last year was a year. You go get Aaron Rodgers, everything's supposed to take care of itself. He gets hurt, he comes back this year, and it's even worse. Like, to think about how this team could get any worse is. I mean, it's crazy. But I think for this team, it'll be attractive to general managers and head coaches because they have a lot of talent. The thing they have to figure out is, does anyone want to come in and work under Woody Johnson right now? Like that? That is the issue. But you pay guys well enough to. And they're well compensated. They'll come in and do their job and try to figure it out. But there's a good amount of talent on this jets team. They got to figure out what they're going to do at quarterback next year. Is it going to be Aaron Rodgers, are they going to move on? But. And some other places, you look at Breeze hall, you like Garrett Wilson, you look at the guys on this defense, they have talent. They just can never figure out how to get this ship pointed in the right direction. And it's plagued this franchise for years and just seems like you're still scratching your head and wondering, where will this thing go and when will they ever get it figured out?
Doug Gottlieb
Who would you rather coach under Woody Johnson or Jerry Jones?
Kevin
I think. I think Jerry Jones.
Doug Gottlieb
Jones.
Kevin
I think Jerry Jones, from the standpoint of he's done really well in the draft. The Cowboys have, like, when you look at the guys they draft, they have talent. And I think one of the biggest things that'll stick out is they have a quarterback. Dak Prescott is there. So if I'm going to go and have to deal with an owner, I think I'm going to go deal with Jerry Jones, who at least will be front and center, taking questions, saying, hey, the general manager is not going anywhere because I'm the general manager, I'm not firing me. But if you want to criticize somebody on what free agents we have, how the team's been built, I'm Jerry Jones, I'm the general manager. Like, I rather deal with that than somebody pulling me into the office and saying, do this, do that, do this, and then it all coming down on me. No, like, if we're in this together and you're going to be making decisions, go out there and make the decision. I might not like it or agree with it, but at least it's your decision and it's known to everybody. Rather than me having to be the guy that's pulling a string. Well, not pulling the strings, but actually having my strings pulled in different directions, I rather not have to go through that one.
Doug Gottlieb
This would be pure speculation on your part, but they just agreed to pay Dak 50 million bucks a year. Any chance they move on from Dak if they're able to have that 1, 2, or 3 draft pick? And you know, Shadow Sanders is 1. Cam Ward, I mean, would the Cowboys do that? Any chance?
Kevin
It would be hard. I think, like when you. When you first sign a contract, like the amount of money that they would lose and they would have to eat and guarantees and cap and dead cap and all of that stuff. However, all of those numbers get worked out, it's above my pay grade. But once you. You figure all that in, I don't think there's a way that they can, you know, get rid of Dak Prescott this year. The interesting thing will be if they get a chance, do they try to draft a guy that they see for the future? If there's a guy who falls in the draft or something like that, and they. Or, yeah, falls at the end of the first round and they trade back up in the first round, do they do something like that? Like we saw Green Bay do when they drafted Jordan Love in the later rounds? I think it was 23rd when they drafted him with that pick. It was kind of like, okay, we're drafting the successor to Aaron Rodgers. Now, obviously it created a storm and Green Bay drafting him, but I think that will be an interesting thing. But the problem with that is it shows a dysfunction. You just pay a guy all that money and then you draft a guy for the future. It. It doesn't make much sense, but I think when you talk about the Cowboys and you talk about the jets, like, I don't think it has to make sense. They could easily do something like that and none of us would be surprised.
Doug Gottlieb
I mean, Atlanta kind of just did that, right, With Cousins. And then, I mean, even if you look back at Aaron Rodgers and Jordan Love, like, Rogers got all pissy when they drafted Jordan Love for. I mean, so it has been done. And I would say the packers are actually a team we expect to win. The Falcons maybe not so much, but yeah, I mean, after all that and making Dak wait in the last minute, 50 million a year and then drafting another quarterback, like, but that would be that. I don't know. If Eddie, you're a Cowboys fan, how would you feel about that?
Justin Jefferson
I mean, I like it because we're not doing anything right now anyway, but that I feel like if I were Dak, I wouldn't like that one bit.
Kevin
You ever get drafted and that's it. I was just gonna say. And that's the thing with, with the Cowboys, like, is this move gonna make you a better football team and win? Probably not. But is the move gonna get you talked about on every network every single day of the week? Yeah, it's definitely gonna do it. And we've seen over the last 20 something years that has seemed to be one of the main things that Cowboys look for. They make a ton of money because they're always talked about they're America's team, all of that. I don't. Winning is as important to the Cowboys as everyone thinks it is, especially their fan base. I think their fan base thinks winning is important, but I'm not sure inside that building and the higher ups offices that they care as much about winning or selling tickets or merchandise.
Doug Gottlieb
You ever get drafted behind, meaning they drafted on the db, maybe not to replace you, but you felt like, dang, they got, they just drafted somebody up and spent a good pick on them to play my position. How does that feel to you, man?
Kevin
Every year you're watching the draft and everybody thinks that you're watching to see who you get to make you better. Now you just, you just trying to see, are they trying to get me out of the door, my replacement, are they going younger? Like, that's what guys watch the draft about. So, yeah, there was plenty of times that there were guys being drafted in the DB room and I would be like, all right, like, I gotta go. Even my guys from Rutgers, when Logan Ryan and Daron Harmon got drafted in the third round, like, I know I knew those guys personally. I knew they were smart, tough, good football players. I'm like, I gotta, I gotta get going. I gotta make sure I stay young. And I continue to grind in the off season because every year teams are trying to get younger. And especially as you get to the second contract and you're making more money and they can find a guy that's just, you know, maybe not as good as you right now, but eventually they think will be better. You can, you can seal it. Like, they're going to get rid of you. They're Going to move on. So every year in the NFL it's a fight for older guys to stay young and try to keep your job. So I'm sure, you know, I don't think Kirk Cousins was happy. It kind of came out a little bit this year, but he signed Atlanta and then you draft Michael Penix Jr and I know right now they seem to be in a good spot because of the wins they banked earlier in the season, but they haven't been playing their best ball. So they fall out of playoff contention. Like there's no saying. They don't say, hey, let's start this Michael Penix journey earlier than later. So you can't control it. And one thing I've always done is I've always tried to be a great teammate to all the younger guys because they're not. Their job is to come in and take your job. They want to do the same thing you were able to do when you were a young guy. So the thing is as a player, you got to go be better. You can't get mad. And you've heard stories of veterans withholding information or not helping guys and different things like that. That to me that never works out. That young guy's better than you. Eventually he's going to figure it out, he's going to take your spot. You're not helping the cause by just being an a hole to him. You might as well help the guy out and pass on what guys did before you as well.
Doug Gottlieb
James Winston is very much a TikTok quarterback in that. He's just funny in clips. Like I love watching Jameson clips on tick tock post game during game, the clip of him going, somebody jump off sides. Come on. He's like screaming at the line. Like James seems like a guy that, that everybody in the locker room likes. Like who was that? And it could be a quarterback you played against or one that was on your team that was just so freaking lovable. It was lovable for one.
Kevin
I'll say this too about Jameis. What would happen if Cleveland season if they would have put Jameis in earlier? Not to say he's the greatest thing ever, but you just said it. The energy, the way the team reacts to him. It just seems like that would have taken off and helped this Browns team. But I'll name two. One of the guys that I love playing against was Philip Rivers. Never cursed on the field, talked trash all the time. But here you had this guy who had like eight or nine kids and he never curses. Like how do you not get that man, the one you go from at home, yelling at kids all day, then guys are chasing you, hitting you, and you still don't curse. It was so impressive to see. Like, that was. He was that guy. And one of the other guys, to me, is one of the more obvious guys by having Gronk as a teammate. Like, Gronk was the guy that did everything that Coach Belichick would say we don't want to do and just never got in trouble for it. Like, you get mad at him because he was out, out somewhere and he starts dancing or acting a fool. And it'd be like the one thing Bill said, all right, this weekend, guys, let's lay low, or blah, blah, blah. Gronk would be all over social media, all over some websites, and Bill would come in and he would go to, like, get on Gronk, and Gronk would give some kind of answer and Bill would start laughing. The whole room would start cracking up. Like, that was just Gronk. His sound bites. Everything about him was always fun and games. He. He was that one teammate that you knew it would be instant laughter. But you also knew once you got on the field, he was going to be a problem for any team to have to deal with.
Doug Gottlieb
Two final questions. You ever pick Brady off in practice?
Kevin
Of course. And I kept the ball when I took Brady off every single time. Now, I didn't do. I didn't do like Logan did. You know, Logan got signed off that last ball and we saw it on social media for, like, the next six months and telling us how he ended Tom Brady's career in New England. So, nah, man, anytime you pick off Brady, you know, that's a special.
Doug Gottlieb
One final question, because Sunday Night Football, you're great. And you're also doing the Westwood One, the broadcast there. Like, what have you learned about this part of the business that maybe you didn't know until you got into it?
Kevin
Man, being a player, how many times you hear the media is bad, this guy's going to do this, she's going to say that, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. When you're on the outside and you're sitting in all of these meetings, or you get to meet different people and you get to know them, everybody's best friends with the media, the head coaches, the general managers, the owners. As a player, you don't know that inside information gets leaked. I used to wonder, like, man, who's the guy in the locker room that's talking to these guys, telling them everything? And I didn't know it was the damn team. The team was telling all of the things that they wanted out there. And now that I'm in the media, I see how it works. And as a player, you had no idea the these people who are insiders and different things like that, their best friends are your. Your coaches, your head coaches, your position coaches, your gm. So that was something that I felt like when I got into the media. I was like, man, I'm in the inner circle now. I know all of the goods. I know more than I ever knew as a player. So it's. It's definitely different when you think of it as a player in that perspective and now being done and fully being involved in it.
Doug Gottlieb
And we mentioned this before you came on, but if you're listening to this, you can go to mccordytwins.com to see all the work that Devin and Jason do for their local communities and charities and how you can be involved. And, dude, you're doing awesome. You're freaking great. And all the work that you do, even like going on as guests, but, you know, you're Sunday Night Football stuff, so. We appreciate the time you gave us. We'll be watching. Keep up the good work, and hopefully we'll talk to you again soon.
Kevin
Appreciate it, man. Thanks for having me on today.
Doug Gottlieb
Thanks, Devin. We can share our personal stories. I'll go first. Missouri beat us. We suck. We went six and six. We lost Oklahoma State. That was a stupid game. Oklahoma State didn't even win a conference game this year. I'm so just. I'm almost apathetic, except I can't be because I just love Arkansas Razorback football and Arkansas sports so much. It just. What's the use? What's the use?
Justin Jefferson
You okay, man?
Doug Gottlieb
We had a big fight at Thanksgiving, and it all was rooted in me being pissed about the game.
Justin Jefferson
Who got into a fight?
Doug Gottlieb
Me and everybody.
Justin Jefferson
The whole family.
Doug Gottlieb
I stormed out and went upstairs.
Eddie
No, you didn't.
Doug Gottlieb
And it wasn't just about the game, but that's what triggered me.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, my God.
Doug Gottlieb
I was that guy. Oh, no. I was like, you guys just don't understand.
Eddie
What did Caitlin say?
Doug Gottlieb
Well, she wasn't very happy about it.
Justin Jefferson
Was she on your side, though? She was on your side.
Doug Gottlieb
There was no side.
Justin Jefferson
What did you say?
Doug Gottlieb
It doesn't matter. I don't want to relive it because it was bad. And I was so pissed at everything. I was the world. And I was like, guys, please don't trigger me. I even begged. Please don't trigger me.
Justin Jefferson
Were they messing with You a little bit.
Doug Gottlieb
Not even about that, about something else. But I was like, I've had a rough one. Don't.
Justin Jefferson
I understand. I'm laughing because I understand, dude. I understand.
Doug Gottlieb
I begged him. Please don't. And then we lost. We lost basketball too. Illinois. And that's bad. I was like, please don't. Please don't. Please don't. Because it's. It's not gonna be good. Like I know the evil monster that lives inside. And it wasn't. It was about something completely different. And I went. It was not good.
Justin Jefferson
Oh no. How long were you in your room?
Doug Gottlieb
I went up to my room about four. I didn't come out to the next day, by the way. I wasn't even serious. I wasn't even in my house. I was at their house.
Eddie
You like write a note that you're running away.
Doug Gottlieb
What are you doing?
Justin Jefferson
Pull the home alone.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, it sucked, guys. And I'm not happy with it, but I understand it. And you know what? I. Forgive me for it.
Eddie
Good.
Doug Gottlieb
It just asked you to pass the turkey, man. It's not good, but it's. It. I. And every year I'm like, why do I give so much of like my heart, soul, passion to something that doesn't care about me? But I do. And we're six and six with some bad losses. We got that one lucky Tennessee win. Happy for it. But we're not going to make any changes and that sucks. And I've said before, I think my comparison last week was I compared coach Pittman, who I like as a person a lot to Geno Smith, who's a fine enough quarterback. And Gino had a good. They ended up winning that game.
Eddie
Yeah, yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
But again, there's a ceiling. There's a ceiling. And I think Pittman has changed the culture, which is great because we were under. Coach Morris was not good. But. And if he wants one more year to great. But it's not. I mean we're not going to win eight or nine games next year. But yeah, no, I don't, I don't like that. But anyway, Missouri beat us and they beat us.
Justin Jefferson
Snow game. Right?
Doug Gottlieb
His snow game.
Eddie
What were your expectations coming into the year? Like if you would have said six and six, would you have been like, okay, probably six and six.
Doug Gottlieb
If you just at the beginning of the year I'd have been like based on what we have. Okay. But here's the problem that I have with all these media people in Arkansas. First of all, they're state run media because they know and I Understand if they talk bad about Arkansas, they won't have credentials to go to the stuff. And that's the only thing in town.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
So I completely understand. Like, there are two guys I like, Bo and Chuck, who work for the university, but they also do a radio show and they're always like, hey, you get what a game. We really put heart and soul into it. And like they're People are like, you're propaganding the state. It's like, no, their paychecks come from the university.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
Aside from the radio thing. But I would do that too, I think.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
Where I don't have to do that. So I don't. If you would have said six, six, the beginning of the year, I'd have been like, oh, I don't like that. But I understand it because I think five and a half was what Vegas had put the line at. Maybe even four and a half. I'm not sure. But to see how weak some of the teams where we played. It's. It's different now that we've had the season. We should not have lost Oklahoma State. That game was a disaster. We should not have lost to Missouri. That's a bad game too. We gave it up at the end. Listen, we had Texas A and M on the ropes and you're not going to win every game. You're always. When people are like, we're three plays away from nine. Okay. Just even one of the three.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
And then you're seven and five with a chance to have a. Like, that's a different 7 to 5 is different than 6 and 6. If it's. Regardless, I'm sorry for Thanksgiving.
Justin Jefferson
I want to know so bad now.
Doug Gottlieb
Don't ask my wife, please.
Justin Jefferson
No, I won't. Trust me, I won't.
Doug Gottlieb
I don't want to because I don't want to have it happen again. She was like, you talked about it with Eddie. I don't want it.
Justin Jefferson
No, I won't bring it up. Up. I tell you about that time when it was, I think our things. No, it might have been Christmas with my family and just the cousins. Cuz like we. My wife's family has a bunch of cousins and one of her sisters married a guy who. His. I don't know, his grandfather went to Clemson or something. So the family's big Clemson fans. And so when Clemson and Ohio State were playing, I don't know, like six years ago, the. The cousins were like, let's go Ohio State. Ohio State. And the whole family got so mad. Had they. Did they did what you did. They locked themselves in their room.
Eddie
But are they. Are they egging it on on purpose?
Justin Jefferson
Yes.
Eddie
Oh, you can't do that.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, you can't do that. You can't do that. Yeah.
Justin Jefferson
They're like 6, 7, 8 years old.
Eddie
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
They're idiots.
Eddie
That pissed me off.
Justin Jefferson
But they did go into their room, watch the game by themselves.
Doug Gottlieb
I just sat and watched Tick tock for, like 11 hours. I just knew that the best place for me was around nobody. And now, again, I wasn't even my own house. I went into a guest room at another person's house. And just regardless, I wrote this tweet. This is right after the game. Hey, Mizzou, you own us. Oh, we act like it's not a rivalry. Because it's not. You whoop us right on schedule practically every year. No rivalry there. Please keep trolling us every year. We'll get outraged. Rinse and repeat. Signed entire state of Arkansas because they're four and one against us. Drink comes in. He trolls us every year. Hilarious, by the way.
Justin Jefferson
And he wins.
Doug Gottlieb
And he wins. And a lot of people are like, can't believe you'd write that. Yeah, Yeah, I wrote that. It sucks.
Justin Jefferson
By myself in a guest bedroom.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah.
Eddie
In the dark, candles lit.
Doug Gottlieb
So stupid. That was my thing. Is a bad one. Whatever.
Justin Jefferson
That's tough.
Doug Gottlieb
It's tough. How about those Jets, Casey?
Kevin
Oh, yeah.
Justin Jefferson
Actually, I'm kind of happy, though, that they lost.
Doug Gottlieb
Lower draft pick. Better draft pick now.
Justin Jefferson
Lower draft pick. But Seattle really wanted to give that game to us. They had like, two muff puns, but leave it to old Aaron Rodgers to.
Doug Gottlieb
Throw a little pick six. Pretty good maze mobile.
Justin Jefferson
There was one play where he was moving around. It wasn't a complete pass because he threw it in the dirt because he can't throw anymore. But, you know, it was still a valiant effort. Was that. Yeah.
Eddie
Threw a block, got lit up.
Justin Jefferson
Now he's 41. Sounds great.
Doug Gottlieb
So I. If you're. If I'm a Jets fan, I like what happened.
Justin Jefferson
Yes.
Doug Gottlieb
I always root for the team, but I think, like, the. Like, with Missouri, I was rooting for us to be Missouri. Like, but then when we lost, I'm like, you know what? Maybe this will affect some change of some sort. Right. Yeah. Bob Petrano is like, one of the head candidates to be the Charlotte head football coach or offensive coordinator where that suck. If he left. Kevin, you had kind of the best case scenario.
Kevin
Yes.
Doug Gottlieb
You played your hearts out.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
Your quarterback looked great.
Eddie
Awesome.
Doug Gottlieb
And then Anthony Richardson just Was awesome, too.
Eddie
Yeah. And it's funny, my. My brother and my dad were texting the whole game, like, oh, my God, why aren't they doing this? Doing this? And in my head, I was like. I wasn't even responding. So I was like, you guys understand, like, this is good for us. Drake May looked awesome. Their offense looked great. Defense looks suspect at some points. And then we lost the game. Like, when they went for two, I was like, please get it. Yeah, like, it's great.
Doug Gottlieb
It's.
Eddie
Which is so weird. It's taken me, I don't know, 10, 11 weeks to get here, but I am in full next year rebuild. Like, let's get that draft pick.
Doug Gottlieb
You don't want drag man to get hurt. You, like, for him to still look great.
Eddie
Yep.
Doug Gottlieb
Which he has been. He's. Before the game, I'm not sure. We ended up with. He was more yards per carry than Michael Vick during his best season. Like, running.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
Crazy. Congratulations on your loss.
Eddie
Thank you.
Doug Gottlieb
Congratulations on your loss.
Justin Jefferson
Thank you.
Kevin
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
How about the Cowboys?
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, we won.
Doug Gottlieb
I know.
Justin Jefferson
Again.
Doug Gottlieb
And Micah Parsons is like, we're making the playoffs, baby.
Justin Jefferson
He's eating a chicken wing when he says that.
Doug Gottlieb
Let me ask you this question, because I've never given him the Cowboys. Eddie has. A long time ago. The mangles lost again, so they're pretty much out of it. So they may be a bit deflated. I mean, if the Cowboys can. If they can beat the Bengals, then they got the Panthers after that.
Justin Jefferson
Let's have fun. Although the Panthers. The Panthers don't look bad. Like, the Panthers, like, almost want to.
Doug Gottlieb
For almost 300 yards, couple touchdowns.
Justin Jefferson
So that's a little. That's. To me, that's scarier than the Bengals now coming.
Doug Gottlieb
It's not scary or no. Oh, yeah. It's not scary. Joe Burrow and the Bengals are still scoring 100 points. They just can't stop anybody. But how about your Cowboys win?
Justin Jefferson
What if they win two more? Like, I don't know, dude. This is crazy. But I am like Kevin, like Kevin said, I'm having more fun watching games like this, where if we don't, we're not expected to make the playoffs. So I'm kind of having fun with it. Like, I can enjoy the game. They almost blew it at the end again. I'm like, hey, they blow it, it's fine. No big deal. They're playing Drew Lock in the New York Giants. But they won. It was cool.
Doug Gottlieb
I gotta walk down and get something for lunch from the grocery store downstairs.
Justin Jefferson
Did you not care what I was talking about.
Doug Gottlieb
I gave up like halfway through. We're going, dude, going to the playoffs. I'm going to tell you why. Because you gave up weeks ago. And we said we're not listening to anything positive. So all I'm thinking is have therapy at 1:30 and I have to get an allergy shot right before that. And I'm trying to figure out if I can get to downstairs to get something to eat real quick before I do that.
Justin Jefferson
Well, let's wrap it up.
Doug Gottlieb
I mean, I have so much more to talk about. I pooped on the cushion at the house. Oh, is that neurovirus? I just flipped the cushion over.
Justin Jefferson
You didn't tell anyone?
Doug Gottlieb
I did not slip the cushion over.
Justin Jefferson
Oh my God, you're a hit and run.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, I couldn't find the dog cleaner I was gonna blame on the dog, so I just flipped the cushion over as well. What was that? Out of anger as well? No, it wasn't flipparooski. And so I flipped it. But now I gotta find a way to blame it on the dog somehow in the next couple weeks. I wrote that down. Okay. Mike, do we need a break real quick? Yeah, let's do it. I do. A break.
Devin McCourty
In the aftermath of a transformative election like the one we just had, it's hard to read the news without asking yourself every five seconds, how did we get here? That's exactly what we're always trying to figure out on Fiasco, a history podcast from the co creators of Slow Burn. In our first season, Bush v. Gore, we examine an unmistakable turning point in American politics. The 2000 election, which came down to a recount in Florida and ended with one of the most controversial rulings in Supreme Court history. In many ways, it's the beginning of the story we're living through right now. So if you're trying to make sense of the present moment, check out Fiasco, Bush v. Gore, and find out how a statistical tie in the Florida vote count put the nation into an unprecedented holding pattern during which American voters waited with bated breath to find out whether Al Gore or George W. Bush would be the next President of the United States. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay, that's gonna pretty much do it here on this show. By the way, we can highlight game of the week because we, you know, we didn't spend a lot of time talking about games, but highlight game of the week for you, Kevin. Like, what was the craziest game I.
Eddie
Want to say the eight overtime, but I kind of got of over it a little bit, I guess. So probably the Michigan, Ohio State. Just because the upset was so big.
Doug Gottlieb
So big in the fight. It's so big that even if Ohio State wins the national championship, like that's still cool and all. But 22% of it doesn't matter as much anymore because Michigan just beat them. Yeah.
Eddie
Like their season already feels like it's done.
Doug Gottlieb
Ryan, day one and four. Oh, sucks. Yeah, that's a good one. Another thing, I was thinking about the flag because you know they're gonna say no more big flags. You what I would do. So when you do one, like they mow, they put little sprinkler head flags.
Justin Jefferson
All the little ones.
Doug Gottlieb
What I would do is get a bunch of little ones and then I would have everybody start playing little ones around the field all of a sudden when no one sees it. And then all of a sudden they're like, why are there Michigan little flags.
Justin Jefferson
All over the irrigation flag?
Doug Gottlieb
Yes. That's what you do. No one even notices. So that would be my next move there.
Justin Jefferson
Pretty good.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah. Eddie, game.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, I think it's Georgia. Georgia Tech. Just because at the end I put $10 on Georgia Tech Tech. And man, I mean, I just. I just felt like it was going to happen. And then every time like, oh, Georgia scores. Oh, Georgia score. Georgia Tech scores. And like nothing. Nothing. It was just awesome. Following eight overtimes. I loved it.
Doug Gottlieb
I wish you would have like texted us that winning bet.
Justin Jefferson
I didn't win it.
Eddie
Exactly.
Justin Jefferson
If I would have won it, you know, I had Georgia Tech just. Just to win Moneyline.
Doug Gottlieb
Got it. Got it.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, I would have texted you guys, though.
Doug Gottlieb
I know. Casey, how about the.
Justin Jefferson
The Bears butchering that last.
Doug Gottlieb
Oh, my God.
Justin Jefferson
Late game decision against the Lions.
Doug Gottlieb
And then e refluce goes in the post game. Oh, yeah. Stand by it. I think we did the right thing. And then he has a press conference the next morning and they fire him right after the press conference. I can't believe they let him have.
Justin Jefferson
A press conference in franchise history or something.
Doug Gottlieb
Like 100 years. They did it once before, like 100 years ago because like their coach had coached like five games, but he wanted to, like, do something. It was some weird like 100 years ago rule. It was like I wanted to turn butter. So he stopped.
Justin Jefferson
Got drafted in the wars.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, something like that. Yeah. That was a crazy one.
Justin Jefferson
There were.
Doug Gottlieb
So I'll say this. The. The Bills are really good.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
If you have Josh Allen, your fantasy team Congratulations. He got two touchdowns at once. I've never seen it happen before.
Justin Jefferson
Dude. I've never said this, but I. I felt bad for the 49ers. They look so bad.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, Christian McCaffrey likes Slice, by the way. If you have an injured anything and you're playing snow and ice, I'm just going back right. Hindsight 20 20. Because he. He takes off around the right side. He goes, nope, and just slides down. Is like, I'm done.
Eddie
Yep. Not happening.
Doug Gottlieb
Done for the year. They said he was probably done for the year. I don't know.
Eddie
I mean, their season's over.
Doug Gottlieb
Trending that way. Yes.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
So my game. Oh, man, I love Syracuse beating Miami. That was awesome. Especially the coach at the end going like, dabo, you're in. You're in. We got to play in the. In the AC Championship game.
Justin Jefferson
How about that Chiefs Raiders game, too? That ended up pretty. I know, right?
Doug Gottlieb
You know. You know, we can still make the College Football Playoff.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah.
Eddie
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
What game was that?
Eddie
South Carolina.
Doug Gottlieb
That was it. Thank you. That was it. So. Because it has something to say about it. Go, go Gamecocks. And I hope there are three lost team that gets in. And so they go and they be Clemson. It's awesome. And whatever I've been. And I tweeted put South Carolina in with three losses just because they've been as hot as anybody. And it just be fun because they're not Alabama. And although I root for Alabama, but I love it. And then I've been texting with a couple of the coaches. Yeah, I've been talking with Beamer.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, really?
Doug Gottlieb
Yes. It's so funny, dude. They think I have, like a bunch of influence. I don't. And they're just also fun. Like, I know the offensive coordinator because he used to be at Arkansas Dins. And then I would text him a Beamer. And I know. I know a couple people on the College Football Playoff committee, and. And I don't know, I'm just like, yeah, I'll let them know.
Justin Jefferson
Let me see what I can do.
Eddie
Pull some strings.
Doug Gottlieb
Let me see what strings I can pull to get you guys in. But I like Beamer. Shane Beamer a lot.
Justin Jefferson
He's awesome.
Doug Gottlieb
He's awesome. That's it. We're done. I gotta go get some lunch. I'm gonna get allergy shots.
Justin Jefferson
Go do your thing.
Doug Gottlieb
I'm gonna go to therapy.
Eddie
Full day.
Doug Gottlieb
I gotta work out.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, yeah, we still gotta work out.
Eddie
Dang.
Doug Gottlieb
I got snow stuff that we didn't get to today. That it doesn't matter. We'll get to it next show. We do have Joy Logano coming up.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, the race car driver.
Doug Gottlieb
Later on this week. Riverboat run.
Justin Jefferson
Oh, yes.
Doug Gottlieb
Next week, I think. Unless we double up this week. I don't know. Thank you, guys. And by the way, Reed, go ahead. Hey, everybody, I just want to say right now, go and search Bobby bone Sports on YouTube. It's going to have some very, very unique content on it. It's gonna have the best content you've ever seen. Actually, all sports ever. All sports content. Here's the problem we got into because we had the Bye Bones channel, but it was like Bobby cast stuff. It was a bunch of cut. But that YouTube didn't know who to, like, send it to. So they. Because it's been so much so long, like a music channel. So they would send the sports stuff to the music people. And they were like, why we want to see this? So you got to kind of build and stay consistent. And so Reed's like, I don't know, dude. We should probably just do a different channel. I know it sucks. We're gonna have to rebuild it. But it's gonna have all sports Bible channels still exist, though. Yeah, Bobby Bones channels there for Bobby Cass, all that stuff. But this is going to be unique to just sports. It's going to be high quality content. And if any video gets over 100,000 views, I will show my penis.
Justin Jefferson
That's the special content.
Eddie
If you go subscribe.
Doug Gottlieb
If you're a die hard. You didn't let me finish. To Eddie, but not. Okay. All right. What's that, Reed? I was just going to say, if you're a die hard sports fan and you do go subscribe to it. Go to the welcome video and comment. Comment. And your boy is going to be giving out some cash next couple weeks. How about that? Yeah. Why are you giving out cash? I just want to see it grow, man. Is it my money? No, it's not. It's not your money. Why would you give out. I want to. I want to do it. No, just take my money. No, I don't want your money. I want to do it.
Justin Jefferson
Give me the money.
Doug Gottlieb
Because if it grows, you're going to pay me more. Well, that's true, but still.
Justin Jefferson
Yeah, he's investing in himself. I like that.
Doug Gottlieb
Not a ton of money, but I mean, you know, the nickel. No, I got 50 bucks. To some people. Somebody gets a Venmo for a penny. Okay, thank you, guys. We'll see you later on this week. Bye, everybody. See you guys. Theme song written by Bobby Bones, that's me and performed by Brandon Ray. Follow Brandon on socials at brandonray Music. You can follow the show on Instagram at Bobby Bone Sports.
