Eddie
This is a podcast called 25 Whistles. Talking football and they all wear a whistle yet Stupid.
Seth Wickersham
But what did you expect?
Eddie
It's a podcast called 25 Whistles.
Kevin
Yo.
Bobby Bones
Welcome to the show. Hey, Eddie. Thank you guys for being here. Seth Wickersham coming up. We'll talk quarterbacks. It's a great conversation. I'm glad you can hear it. I got a couple things. One, I went to the Cubs game last night. A lot of fun. Weather got good. We were worried because remember went to the Cardinals and it rained us out.
Kevin
Oh, yeah.
Bobby Bones
Terrible. It started raining again.
Kevin
Oh, no, Kevin.
Eddie
We started to think it was usually.
Kevin
Yeah, you guys bring the rain.
Eddie
Bringing in the rain everywhere.
Bobby Bones
We brought the loss.
Kevin
Oh, no.
Eddie
Yeah.
Kevin
No, that's worse.
Bobby Bones
It's all right. Not really because I won two or three from the Braves.
Kevin
Okay.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, they're not going to win the division anyway. They're five. Well, they were five back going last night. The brewers are a different animal. Yeah, they are going to make the playoffs. So it was a fun game. Ate two hot dogs. There were some famous people there. Tom Morello from Rage against the Machine.
Kevin
Wow. Guitar player. Right?
Bobby Bones
Kevin, Come on.
Kevin
Come on, Eddie. Was that your first time at Wrigley?
Eddie
No, it's my second time, but it's My first time with those seats.
Kevin
Yeah, the picture, actually, I saw.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, dude, we're probably like, seven rows back from home plate.
Kevin
That's legit.
Eddie
Yeah. You see everything. And the coolest thing that I liked from the angle we were at was just to see the curvature of the ball when it gets hit. Just to kind of see like, oh, man, that's going. Let. No, it's not. It's curving. Right. And then you see the outfielder.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, we can see the up. Up against the pole. Like, the line on the pole.
Kevin
Isn't that crazy? The outfielders like how they get that tail. And you're just like, how do you read that?
Bobby Bones
Yeah, it was fun. We had a good time.
Kevin
That's awesome.
Bobby Bones
We spent all day in Chicago yesterday. I went to promote a bit of the other podcast that I do with Matt Castle, because this one doesn't need to. This one's a baller.
Eddie
Did you throw our podcast in there.
Bobby Bones
Just like this one? Yeah, I didn't. I went up with. With intention of that one with. To promote that one.
Kevin
Remember, we don't need it. Right, right.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, this was a baller. But you know.
Eddie
You know what Bobby said, Kevin? He. He. Because he went into. We saw. I saw two of your interviews out of the three, and the one that they weren't broadcasting in the room.
Bobby Bones
You watched the Cubs one, too. So you saw three of the four.
Eddie
Okay, yeah, three of the four. But the one that we did not watch, he comes out, he's like, oh, man, you guys didn't watch that? I threw you guys a shout out.
Kevin
Really? I did.
Bobby Bones
I swear to God, I'm like, dude.
Eddie
The one that I didn't see, you threw a shout out out.
Bobby Bones
So I get there, and that's. You know, Barstool's a mostly male audience, so it's a different audience that can be exposed to me and to. Hopefully some of them will go and sample lots to say, like, that's the goal.
Kevin
Yep.
Bobby Bones
And so go up. And I do mostly sports with Brandon Walker and Mark Titus, who I'm a big fan of. And so they do their show. It's a YouTube show they do every day, and it's a podcast, and they do their show live every day, same time. And so I hop into that show, and I walked in, they had already started a few minutes earlier, so I was a little discombobulated because I had never met them in person. I'd only been on one of their shows through this studio when I did a virtual.
Kevin
Okay.
Bobby Bones
So I walked in and I was like, oh. And they're already going. So I just sat down on the couch. And I liked it because I just kind of jumped in. Just kind of fell in. And they asked me some stuff. But I did plug the podcast that Matt and I did, and we just did an hour talking about all kinds of stuff. Didn't say anything about Eddie. No, didn't really come up.
Eddie
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And George Burgess was with us. He's a friend of ours. But George now has two number ones. And had something come up about new country music, I'd have given George a shout out. Didn't come up. I knew they were watching on the television out in the main lobby. There's like a room they have that's like a chill out room.
Kevin
Okay.
Bobby Bones
But I didn't really feel the need to, like, shout them out. No big deal. Like, forced them. The other one they watched was called the Yak. And it's like a hour, 45 minute YouTube show podcast. And it's like everybody that's up there all sitting around. And I did the Gauntlet. And you go in the gym and you do all these.
Kevin
Oh, yeah, I've seen clips and videos of that, like, shooting.
Bobby Bones
I crushed.
Kevin
Did you?
Eddie
He crushed it. Kevin crushed it.
Bobby Bones
I'm not here to gas myself up because there are many times I don't crush stuff. But it starts off with a beanbag.
Eddie
Cornhole.
Bobby Bones
Cornhole.
Kevin
Okay.
Bobby Bones
And you can't touch a bag. And they go, go. And you have to grab and start throwing one at a time. I grab one bag across the gym. Nailed it first, right in the hole. Nothing but hole. And I was like, oh, God. So then I go, I suck kicking. But of the first three balls, one of my balls went in and it.
Kevin
Field goal.
Bobby Bones
Knockoff soccer.
Kevin
Okay.
Bobby Bones
Hey, classic American football. I didn't see it go in, but they're watching the line, and apparently the ball went behind the goalie's hand. Over the line. I kept kicking like, no, no, it went. So I went. The next thing is a wiffle ball, and you have to throw it to yourself. Hit a home run over this out of the gym. The timing's weird because you're throwing it to yourself and trying. Dude, I ripped it. Home run. First swing gone. Dang. The next one is a quarterback throw with a hole, and you got to throw the ball through the first throw through the hole.
Kevin
Dang.
Bobby Bones
And I'm like, I'm on fire. I lose my shoe on the gym in the basket. So my shoe comes off and I'm one shoed And I hit my fourth three pointer. The four. They have a rack, so I shoot one. Almost made the first one one of them. The third was an air ball. I was like, calm down. Drill the fourth one. Go across. Drill it. Did the whole thing in, like, 36 seconds. So I was really feeling great about that.
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Did the whole interview with them. Never said anything about Eddie. Sorry, buddy.
Eddie
It's okay.
Bobby Bones
They didn't ask about it.
Eddie
Didn't expect it, really.
Bobby Bones
Right. Did the Cubs one, and they were in the room. And there's. It's the channel in Chicago that has the Cubs, the Bears. It's called the Marquee network. It's television network. Didn't really bring up Eddie or George. There was no reason.
Eddie
No, yeah, it's all good.
Bobby Bones
Didn't come up. It came up on this other podcast that I did called Macro Dosing, which they do cult. A lot of culture stuff. They talk about sports a little bit. And I go in, and one of the guys that hosts it is very popular. His name is. Well, not his real name, but pft. Yeah. Is what he goes by. Him.
Kevin
Very popular.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. And so he was like, hey. He was in Austin for, like, eight years. Like, I used to listen to your show all the time. And he was like, it's crazy that you have all these people you've always worked with. And I was like, yeah. Like, they didn't give us any money. So I just brought in my friends, and I was like, my friend out here today, Eddie's like my best friend, but he's also been on my show now for 12 years because I just surround myself with people that put me in a better place. And so I gave Eddie a shout out. And then we're talking about music, and I was like, you know, there's a lot of music, like, in Nashville. You just naturally are embedded in it if you're in the industry. I was like, my friend George out here, George Birds that two number one songs. But he's like, part of our group. Like, it's just a. And so I gave him both a shout out and I came out. I didn't know they weren't on tv.
Eddie
I didn't know the one that we weren't able to watch.
Bobby Bones
I didn't know it wasn't.
Kevin
You didn't have an option.
Bobby Bones
No, because they were watching a different show. The other guys were watching, like, a different betting show or something. Yeah.
Eddie
We were there with, like, other interns in the room.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. So young guys. I didn't know they couldn't See it, but I didn't say it because they were there. But I did give him a shout out. I was like, I shouted you guys out. They're like, shut up. We watched for three hours. You never said anything about us.
Eddie
Yeah, coincidentally, the one that we couldn't see, he shouted us out. Now, we appreciate that, though, dude. Thank you, man. You didn't have to do that. Thank you.
Bobby Bones
I didn't.
Kevin
Do you feel the pressure at all? Like, when you're on the other three? Like, I know you said shout them out.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Kevin
Okay. Just making sure, like, I don't know.
Eddie
There's no pressure.
Kevin
I know there isn't, but I'm just.
Bobby Bones
Saying, this is not 1999 party line. You call in and say hi to your friend on the radio.
Kevin
I know, but I can see Eddie, like, sitting in the back looking at you.
Eddie
No, no.
Kevin
Why'd I like. Yeah, Bobby. Say my name. Say my name.
Eddie
Honestly, if he would have never said anything, I wouldn't even thought, like, did you give me a shout out? No, but he came out of, like, straight out of the studio. Was like, man, did you guys see that? I just gave you a shout out. Like, you know, that we can't see.
Bobby Bones
I didn't know they couldn't see.
Kevin
That's funny.
Bobby Bones
I didn't know. So, yeah, it was good.
Eddie
Awesome day.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. I kind of felt bad for them because they had to sit there for, like, four hours. I did all these interviews.
Eddie
Dude, barstool. That place is like. It's like sports heaven.
Bobby Bones
It's all dudes. They got a full gym.
Eddie
Yeah. A workout gym simulator.
Kevin
Oh, that's cool.
Eddie
A golf simulator. Dude, you name it. The way I told my wife is like, if our boys had their own business, and they're like, you get to decorate it however you want. Do whatever you want. That's how it would be.
Kevin
That would be it right there.
Bobby Bones
And it's just a bunch of dudes. I'm sure they're doing jobs, but just sitting around, like, on laptops, you know? Again, I'm sure they're working.
Kevin
Right?
Bobby Bones
But. And then there's all these rooms. They go and do a podcast and stuff.
Kevin
Is that their main hub or is.
Bobby Bones
It in New York?
Kevin
Do you know?
Bobby Bones
So their main hub was only in New York. They opened this one up. I think they're moving out of New York, Chicago. I don't know. But that's now the one. That's where they shoot the TV show from. They just started on Fox.
Kevin
Okay.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, Cool. So it was great. And I Was super happy that they had me come on all the shows. Got some press for the podcast that.
Kevin
We do love it.
Bobby Bones
Went to the game. We went to the sky Deck, which is what? That is the top of the. It used to be the Sears Tower, the tallest building in America.
Kevin
Oh, yeah.
Bobby Bones
It is anymore. But we went up on top of that. And so you just go up to the top and look out a window. What do you think that ticket cost?
Kevin
Oh, no, no, no.
Eddie
You're on vacation.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. No, no.
Kevin
Okay, just go. You're just going to the top and just seeing the scenic views, right? That's what we're doing.
Bobby Bones
There's no. There's nothing to do up there.
Eddie
No, you just look out.
Bobby Bones
Look out.
Kevin
I'll say. $45 it is.
Bobby Bones
They remember my story. Not that good.
Kevin
I mean, in Chicago, it's a. Yeah, it's 60 bucks. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
65 bucks a ticket.
Kevin
Oh, yeah.
Bobby Bones
And I was like, we should go up to this. I was like, I'll pay for everybody's. Because I. The one that made him come there. I don't want to pay for 65 bucks for something they didn't really want to do. So we all went up. So I paid, like, 250 bucks for us to go and look out a window. And then I was like, yeah, this is pretty high. It's cool. But we were in an airplane earlier that was higher.
Eddie
He did say, that's a good point.
Kevin
That is a good point.
Bobby Bones
And it had windows.
Kevin
That is a good point.
Bobby Bones
And so I also. We got on this part, the glass, like, goes out over the city, and you stand on it and the bottoms out, and they take a picture of you. There's a camera up. And so me, Eddie, George, and Morgan got in the picture. And then I bought the pictures. Like, 40 bucks for the four pictures.
Kevin
I bought four of them for $300. Trip.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, it was. It was so about the four pictures for us. And Morgan's like, okay, the pictures. She left them in the car.
Kevin
Oh, no. Morgan.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. No pictures.
Eddie
I'm sure those pictures were awesome.
Seth Wickersham
They were.
Bobby Bones
They were awesome.
Eddie
You can see the whole city underneath your feet.
Kevin
Yeah, that is.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Kevin
Was it scary at all?
Eddie
That part was because it's just glass, dude. You're standing on glass. Bobby's like, that's not scary.
Bobby Bones
I'm like, I hate heights. But I. I knew we weren't.
Kevin
Yeah. I'm not a huge fan of heights.
Eddie
You knew we weren't gonna fall.
Bobby Bones
I knew we're gonna die.
Kevin
Yeah.
Eddie
So I will say, though, Man. Like, the way you like to see sightsee. I love it. Like, I wish that that's how my family.
Bobby Bones
Would you describe how I like to sightsee?
Eddie
Absolutely. Buy the ticket. Goes. Look at it. Cool. You guys ready? And then we leave, and it's like, dude, we saw it. We saw everything we needed to see. We did a little. Oh, look at that. Took pictures. And then we leave, and then he wants. He wants to like. You want to go see the bean? Yeah. It's about nine blocks away. I've seen the bean in pictures. Let's go check it out. We get to the Bean, you want to take a picture?
Bobby Bones
Cool.
Eddie
Gosh, that thing's huge. All right, you guys ready to go?
Kevin
That's amazing.
Eddie
And we did.
Kevin
We should all be like that.
Eddie
I agree.
Kevin
It's like, okay, you see it now what? Keep looking at it.
Eddie
Like, my family would be like, let's buy popsicles and let's just sit by the bean for a little.
Bobby Bones
Like, why?
Eddie
What are you doing? Get out of here.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I didn't think about it. That's kind of how I live my life. Yeah. Okay. Got everything I could possibly get out of it, and I don't want to feel any more miserable being here, so let's just go ahead and kick rocks and get out. So, yeah, we had a good 12 hour trip to Chicago.
Kevin
Yeah, that's cool. I like Chicago a lot.
Bobby Bones
Me too. When it's not cold.
Kevin
I've never been there when it's freezing.
Bobby Bones
Don't. Don't go.
Eddie
Okay.
Bobby Bones
Siberia. Ever heard of it?
Kevin
Yep.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, it's like that same. It's brutal. I love Chicago, but brutal in the winter.
Kevin
Food is so good, though.
Bobby Bones
We did our draft of teams, so we. I've been in this league the last couple of years. I've talked about on the show, but I'll give a quick recap. And it's me and five other guys, five other teams, six people, and you each draft six teams, and every time your team wins, you make money. Every time your team loses, you lose money. But it gets hard around rounds three, four, and five to get teams that are good because they're all just gone. And the first year I did, I lost like $2,000. Second year, lost like a few hundred bucks. Third year last year, I made like $4,000.
Eddie
That's awesome.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. And I don't think I figured it out, but I had a strategy going in because I played it a couple times. And so on this show, I was like, you guys want to get in? But there's no limit to what you can lose, but there's also no limit to what you can gain. We had Matt Stell on who's Our Friend? And he was like, yeah, somebody lost like $10,000. Won like 10, whatever it was. So you guys decide to come in at 25 and 25%?
Kevin
Yep.
Bobby Bones
And I'm 50%. So I text everybody. I'm like, hey, the draft is at 8 o' clock of these teams. And you guys be on text and I'll try to update you as we're going. But it moves fast. And so Kevin's like, I'm putting the babies down and I got to shoot some influencer videos.
Eddie
Oh, no.
Kevin
Some drink station.
Eddie
Yeah, Priorities.
Bobby Bones
And Eddie's like, cool. Well, I knew Kevin was with the kids. I sent Eddie the zoom link. Just hop on the zoom that I'm on when we do the draft. So Eddie gets on the zoom, so he's able to text without me even texting him. Like he's listening in. And at first you bid on who gets to pick their draft slot. So I've done this a few times now. I know you can get a pretty good draft spot for pretty cheap early. So I'm like 200 bucks. I want to pick my spot. And they're like, great. So I picked the third spot because it's Snake draft.
Kevin
Okay.
Bobby Bones
So if I had to pick first, you get a Buffalo or Baltimore or whatever, and then you have to wait till pick freaking 12.
Kevin
Right?
Bobby Bones
So I pay 200 bucks and I get spot three. Because I feel like there are three teams in that a tier.
Eddie
We paid 200, right?
Bobby Bones
No, I paid 100. You pay 50. 50. You don't have to pay. It happens at the end. They either put it on your bill or take it off your bill. Okay, so what are the things that three teams are on the A tier?
Kevin
The A tier would be in my.
Bobby Bones
In my mind, you could. There could be more.
Kevin
Okay, Buffalo, Baltimore and Philadelphia.
Bobby Bones
Kansas City.
Kevin
I was going to say Kansas City.
Bobby Bones
It's been to the super bowl three years in a row.
Kevin
And I'm not trying to be a hater, but.
Bobby Bones
Oh, yeah, you hate Kansas City. I forgot, cuz they. They threaten the Patriots, but it was.
Kevin
It was between Philly and Kansas City, if that helps.
Bobby Bones
Okay, so in Philly you could put in the A tier for sure. Yeah, I didn't, because, you know, my friend's a Cowboys fan and I respect that.
Eddie
I appreciate that. And I was watching too.
Bobby Bones
So I get the third pick and I'm like, Boom. So first pick, Buffalo figured. Second pick, Baltimore figured. I'm like, I'm sitting here, I'm gonna take Kansas City. So I take Kansas City. Feeling good about that. Had Kansas City last year. Made me a lot of money. So 4, 5, 6 happens and it goes 6, 5, 4, 3 back to me. And I'm ready to take the packers, which, by the way, I was looking at the odds, super bowl odds for this year. Buffalo and Baltimore at plus 600. They're the leaders. Philadelphia, then the Chiefs, then the packers, then the Lions, then the commanders, then the 49ers.
Eddie
Oh, my.
Bobby Bones
Well, so I'm. I was like, I think the packers, but the Bengals are all. I was telling Eddie beforehand, somebody's probably gonna take the packers, but if they don't, we should take the Packers. If they take the packers, take the Bengals. And he's like, bengals, I like Cincy. And I'm like, in my mind, I'm going, man, I would take the packers, but I like Cincinnati too.
Eddie
And I just sent the text.
Bobby Bones
No, no, no, you're fighting for the.
Eddie
I sent the text, I was like, I like Cincinnati. And then it came to Bobby and.
Kevin
The packers were there.
Eddie
Dude, you should have heard his voice. He was like, yeah, let's go. Yeah, we'll go Bengals.
Kevin
Oh, no.
Bobby Bones
I didn't want to not give you guys a voice.
Kevin
I know.
Eddie
Would you have gone Packers?
Kevin
Yes. Yeah. A thousand percent.
Eddie
Yeah. Just based on pre season odds. Well, that expectations. Absolutely.
Kevin
Anything. I mean, I love Joe Burrow, their offense is awesome. But anything you know about the Bengals are. The first four weeks. They're probably going to lose three games.
Bobby Bones
They didn't make the playoffs last year.
Kevin
They did make the playoffs last year.
Bobby Bones
They played great at the end. What, nine? They went nine and eight, I think. Yeah.
Kevin
They almost squeaked in.
Bobby Bones
They don't have a defense. I think the Bengals are going to be pretty good this year. I do. And also in their division, I. Who knows what's happening with Pittsburgh? The Browns suck.
Eddie
Yeah, man.
Bobby Bones
But the Ravens are really good. And so that's all the division, right?
Kevin
Yeah, that's it.
Bobby Bones
So I. And I look back and I said to him, hey, packers, if they're not there, we'll take the Bengals. What do you think? And I just want to say that I agree. Look, if I'm being honest, I just want him to go, like, I agree.
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
But he didn't. And I respect that. I respect. Because you guys are putting money in for sure. Yeah. So I said, okay, Bengals. And I'll Be rooting hard for the Bengals. And I hope I'm wrong. I hope.
Eddie
I hope I'm right. Gosh, I hope I'm right, because I'll never hear the end of it.
Bobby Bones
You won't.
Eddie
I will not.
Bobby Bones
You won't. I hope I. They both could win, though, too.
Eddie
They could.
Bobby Bones
It doesn't have to be one or the other, so. But that's that situation on that. So it goes over to the Bengals and wraps back around. And I believe in round three, I took the Bucks.
Eddie
Yeah. At that point, there was no, like, Eddie, what do you think? It was just like, I got this.
Kevin
I got this. Go.
Eddie
Hey, man.
Kevin
Hey. Get off the call.
Eddie
Get a drink, whatever you want, dude.
Bobby Bones
At round three, I took the Bucks. I feel like they play in a weak division.
Kevin
Love that one.
Bobby Bones
I feel like they can. Yeah. I just like the Bucks.
Kevin
Yeah, I do, too.
Bobby Bones
And then great offensive line, especially when they come back fully healthy.
Kevin
Yep.
Bobby Bones
And then round four, there aren't a lot of teams left after round three. Talking about 18 teams gone. Now, they are picking teams to lose as well, because you can pick a team to lose and if they lose. But the problem with picking teams to lose is once the playoffs start, you can't make any more money. Except for maximum one time if one of your good team makes it and then loses. And you pick them to lose. But you probably didn't pick a good team. It's a whole thing. You don't really. So I picked. I took the Patriots in your honor. Now, you didn't tell me to do that, so I'm not going to blame you, but I want to lose, Kevin. No, I didn't.
Kevin
No. No.
Bobby Bones
So our four. And then I tried the old. The old trick again, but it doesn't matter because they're off the board. I have Miami Dolphins to lose. Miami Dolphins to win. So that's. They're dead.
Kevin
Yeah. They cancel each other out, right?
Eddie
Yes.
Bobby Bones
Okay, so we have four teams. We need them all to win. We really need three of the four to win every week.
Kevin
I was wondering if you picked the Patriots, like, if I had any influence on that.
Bobby Bones
Oh, yeah, for sure. But not so much that I irrationally just jumped into the Patriots. There were no teams left.
Eddie
It was around that time.
Bobby Bones
And I thought, okay, there's like four teams, I think are about the same. And I was like, I think Kevin won't like it if. Since they're all the same, in my mind, if I went with the Patriots because we're already. It makes us root for them. Too.
Kevin
Yep. I love it.
Bobby Bones
And you have a Patriots hat on today.
Kevin
Perfect. Thank you.
Bobby Bones
So those are our four teams.
Kevin
Okay. I feel pretty good.
Eddie
I've never rooted for those four teams ever in my life.
Bobby Bones
The Cowboys were only picked once and to lose.
Eddie
Yes.
Bobby Bones
It's the first year that's ever happened. Somebody always picks them to win. They were never picked to win. They were only picked to lose. They're playing tonight. How do you feel?
Eddie
I feel great. I just. I feel so good. I'm just so glad the season's starting. This is an exciting feeling. Dude.
Bobby Bones
Eagles 8 1/2 point favorites.
Eddie
Not worried about it.
Kevin
That is.
Eddie
I don't think we're going to.
Bobby Bones
It does.
Eddie
It does keep going up.
Bobby Bones
Oh really? I'm going to bet if it's still eight and a half right now. I'm going to bet heavy on the Cowboys.
Kevin
I think it started at seven and then it went seven and a half. That was couple days ago. And now it's eight.
Eddie
It'll be nine by the time the game starts.
Kevin
I. I mean that's a lot in the.
Bobby Bones
I'm telling you this too. I am on such a heater. Did you hear my baseball story earlier? No, no, no.
Eddie
Tell him, tell them. You telling the other.
Bobby Bones
We were doing the show, the podcast on the show. I need to bet this cowboy real quick. I did. They're still plus eight and a half.
Eddie
All right.
Bobby Bones
I'm going to bet.
Eddie
I mean, I do. It's going to be closer than that.
Kevin
You gotta. You gotta think. Right.
Eddie
I don't think we'll win the game.
Bobby Bones
Oh God. If he's thinking that, I don't bet it anymore.
Eddie
I don't think we'll win the game. But it's gotta be closer than.
Kevin
That's so much in the NFL.
Eddie
It is.
Bobby Bones
Okay. I'm going to put 250 bucks on the Cowboys plus eight and a half. Last night we had the draftkings you can use in Illinois. We get there and Eddie's betting on every bat.
Eddie
The Cubs awesome strike. Next place is going to be a strike.
Bobby Bones
As soon as we get there, he goes, we should bet first inning. And I just there. I love the Cubs and at regular with my boys. Got great seats. Got hooked up with great seats and I'm just enjoying it. I got a couple hot dogs. And he's like, no, that's his bet.
Eddie
I don't really.
Bobby Bones
I don't.
Eddie
Next pitch, foul ball.
Bobby Bones
I don't really need that.
Kevin
Right.
Bobby Bones
But he. I guess why not, right? You're in it oh, dude, it's awesome. So he's betting. He's betting. We go no runs, first inning. Now, I'll say it again for the sake of the story. Obviously, I want the Cubs to win, but we both bet no runs first.
Eddie
Just the first inning, man.
Bobby Bones
So the Braves come up, go down. One, two, three. We're like, halfway there.
Eddie
Let's go, baby.
Bobby Bones
And for the first time in my life, I'm rooting against the Cubs to score in the bottom half of the first inning.
Kevin
Quietly, quietly, quietly.
Bobby Bones
And so we're watching and you know, ground out, pop fly, pop fly, and then strike out.
Kevin
Let's go, baby. And we were like, you know, in your Cubs gear.
Eddie
So, hey, I even. I even went over the top of.
Bobby Bones
Like, that's all right, boys.
Eddie
We'll get him next time. Get him next time.
Bobby Bones
We're sitting, like, right behind the plate.
Eddie
And we were like.
Bobby Bones
So I bet, like, 150 bucks. Made 150 bucks.
Kevin
Nice.
Bobby Bones
Nice. So I don't really bet anymore, but I'm watching Eddie over there just tinkering away, like, just got. Trying to. Trying to predict it.
Eddie
Carlos Santana, home run.
Bobby Bones
And he's been like, $1. He's like, if I hit this, I win $40.
Kevin
Nice.
Bobby Bones
And so a couple landings go by, and it's 00. And I've eaten Elmo hot dogs.
Eddie
You're watching. You're watching me?
Bobby Bones
Why not? It'll give us something to talk about, something bond about. And so I'm in. So I bet on a couple. Win a couple first inning. I think I make like 100 bucks or something overall, because I bet like, 50 bucks here, 25 bucks here. Next inning. I'd made a little, but I was like, I'm gonna bet 200 bucks on a single. Now. It can't be a double triple home run. It can't be a ground out. It can't be a strikeout, it can't be a walk. It's got to be an exact single. So I bet 200 bucks. Single made a thousand bucks.
Kevin
Shut up.
Bobby Bones
It was crazy. We jumped up like, we just hit the powerball.
Eddie
Hey, hey. And it was up in the air. He just hit it short. So they just hit the gap.
Bobby Bones
We just saw flow. Flow float land.
Eddie
There. We could lose it, though, because it was a single.
Bobby Bones
It was awesome. It was so cool.
Kevin
That is awesome.
Eddie
Amazing, dude. It's amazing.
Kevin
Especially because it wasn't, like, right away, you knew it was a single. Like, if there's some build up to while the ball's in the air. That's.
Bobby Bones
And we were there. Like, how often do you, like, get a big hit when you're actually there off of something so random. So random. It was crazy.
Kevin
That's amazing.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Not going to lie.
Kevin
Even I was like, cowboys tonight.
Bobby Bones
But I've been hot. I've been hot, so. Because I crushed last week. Listen, I'm not a good better. I'm a fine better. I'm an average better. I would say not a bad better, but not a good better. So I don't think what I say is the gospel. I'm not that guy. I don't have stone cold locks. I'm pretty hot right now, though, so. Right. I ride the wave until I'm not hot anymore.
Kevin
Cowboys years ago, like, first two months you couldn't lose.
Bobby Bones
I won like 10 individual in a row. Yeah, that was good. Maybe I'm back on that track.
Kevin
Oh.
Bobby Bones
So Cowboys plus eight and a half. I love it. Let's get it. I did want to do a couple of. Because I have college and NFL games I'm most interested in. I want to go to college first. I have San Jose at number seven. Texas. Texas, a 36 and a half point favorite. I'm so interested because I just want to watch Arch again.
Eddie
You want to see him shine.
Bobby Bones
I want to see him try to build a career, like fairly try to be a quarterback and not have to play the number one team in the country. Well, Texas was number one. No. Tech. Yeah.
Eddie
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
But not have played like the top defense in the country. His first game and then everybody jump on him. I hate that I'm rooting for Arch. I hate it, Mike. I hate it so much.
Kevin
I love it.
Bobby Bones
I like Arch. I think it's because I like the Mannings in general. And so I'm rooting for Arch. Yeah.
Eddie
You're not rooting for Arch the Longhorn.
Bobby Bones
I hate Texas. You're just rooting for the Arch man. I am. Because I hate when people jump on somebody and go, they're done. Yeah, write them off. It was like. It's why I became such a big Caitlin Clark fan, because she was obviously awesome coming out of college at Iowa, but I wasn't like, so. But everyone's like, there's no chance she's going to do this. And it was just like nonstop dragging. And then she started the season, it wasn't hot because they came right off, right out of college of the wnba. People were killing her. And I was like, I'm in. I couldn't root harder for Caitlin Clark. And so I became a big Caitlin Clark fan. I'm rooting for Arch. Oh, arch those for 500 yards and Texas loses. I'll get you a jersey, man. Yeah, no, I don't want a jersey. So that game I'm interested in, I mentioned Oklahoma State at Oregon. Now Oregon's a 28 and a half point favorite, but in one of the pressers, they go to Dan Landing and they're like, you know, oh, Gundy, he said, you guys spent 40 million on your roster. And then Dan Lanning just slides into it and goes, you know, we do invest a lot in winning here at Oregon. And I feel like the teams that don't invest a lot in winning because you can invest a lot in winning or you can not invest a lot and have an excuse for losing. And I was like, oh, he, he took him out to the woodshed in a very nice way. Yes. And so they're playing each other. They can't wait for it.
Eddie
That's awesome.
Bobby Bones
And Oregon's probably gonna serve it up. Yep. And I like Oklahoma State and I like Gundy, but I thought that I liked that money.
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Like Oregon doesn't have anything unfair. If you're crying about something unfair, I get it.
Eddie
They have Nike. But.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, that's not unfair.
Eddie
Everybody can have a Nike T. Boone.
Bobby Bones
Pickens dead but billionaire built our stadium. Had they all the nice facilities, like everything at different times.
Eddie
Who is that guy? What did he do?
Bobby Bones
Oil man.
Eddie
Oil man. Oil man. You still have Lanning's number?
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Eddie
You ever send him a little text?
Bobby Bones
Nope. I don't text anybody. I don't want texting. I don't want to bother people. Don't bother people. I could, but.
Eddie
But you don't.
Bobby Bones
I got the power of I could. I got two other games college wise. Arizona State at Mississippi State. This is interesting to me because Will Arizona State and Dillingham, they're a top 15 team. They had a great end of the year last year they lost to Texas in the playoff. Obviously they're playing an SC school in an SEC stadium that is not supposedly good. But they are on the slight rebuild and I like them now because I watch any given Saturday. I like the coach. I like Levy. I think both of those teams are going to see who they are.
Kevin
Yeah, I'm excited for that one too.
Bobby Bones
Like Mississippi State, they played Southern Miss. It was pretty close for a while. Yeah, that game is interesting to me for a lot of reasons. It's a Big 12 school. It's an SEC school. It's a team on the come up Arizona State, like on a national level, a prominent level with a coach who's now like the darling because he's like the youngest. I think he's nine.
Kevin
Yeah, something like that.
Bobby Bones
Ten years old. Yeah, yeah, he's been on the show too.
Kevin
Yeah, we had him on last year during the playoff.
Bobby Bones
That's right. That to me is fun. But the big game is Michigan at Oklahoma. Two top 20 teams, two legendary teams. You got a five star quarterback and Bryce Underwood at Michigan who played pretty well last week. They played New Mexico. I'm going from memory here, look good. 18 years old, just turned 18, five star kid. And they're going to Oklahoma. And Oklahoma has a possible Heisman contender at quarterback. The offensive coordinator and the quarterback both came and down from Washington State. So Oklahoma is almost a touchdown favorite because they are playing in Oklahoma. But that game is interesting to me because it's going to allow a lot of things to settle. How good is Bryce Underwood when he's not supposed to be as that good. I mean he's supposed to be good, but he's 18.
Kevin
Yeah. He doesn't have the like the hype, that arch. Nobody does. Nobody to that standard though, I'm saying because he is still like he plays for Michigan and they had a down year last year. Oklahoma also had a down year.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, bad down.
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
So both those teams are going to show something. I always root for the SEC team in situations like this and then because it's my family's team, I root for them, obviously. But that should be a good game. Obviously. Arkansas, Arkansas State, nobody cares about that but us. We shouldn't even think. We don't think we should play it. We've never played them in the history of football. It's the first time ever and we're playing them at crappy Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. I respect the stadium, been to a bunch of games there, rushed the field. But it's like we shouldn't play games off campus. But it's actually closer for Arkansas State than it is for Arkansas and it's an Arkansas home game. There's really nothing you can get positive from it because if they even play close, they're like, hey, look at us, we're close to the big school. It's stupid. So I hope we win and move on. Thinking about going to the Ole Miss game next week at Ole Miss.
Kevin
Okay. Who are they playing?
Bobby Bones
Ole Miss.
Kevin
Oh, sorry, Arkansas.
Bobby Bones
If they were going to Ole Miss to play Oregon, that'd be weird.
Kevin
I don't know.
Eddie
Why you go to a random Ole Miss game?
Bobby Bones
Like, if it's a solid result this week, it may go to Ole Miss.
Kevin
That's cool. I've heard great, great things. Yeah, that's what I heard.
Bobby Bones
I don't know, maybe I'll invite some people. I don't even have tickets yet.
Kevin
We give them shout outs on the. Anywhere you go or.
Bobby Bones
Well, I'm not doing interviews, but I.
Eddie
Would if I do an interview when they're not looking.
Bobby Bones
NFL wise. Cowboys and Eagles tonight, very interested in that game for a lot of reasons. But our money's not in this game, though.
Eddie
No, not our money, but our private money is.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, private money. The chest isn't our community chest.
Eddie
Correct.
Bobby Bones
That'll be fun to see. Just what the Cowboys do. They're going to throw a lot. Is it because they're going to be down?
Kevin
Yeah.
Eddie
Is it a. Let's see how bad they're going to be or let's see.
Bobby Bones
I think it's a. Let's see. Dot, dot, dot.
Eddie
Yeah, all of that. All the above.
Bobby Bones
You know what stack up to the.
Kevin
Great thing you have going for you is your expectations are just so low.
Eddie
Sure, yeah. I mean, they're pretty neutral. Do I think that this is our year?
Bobby Bones
No, they were low a week ago. You're. No, no, no. You're not shifting. You quit them last week.
Eddie
Is this our year?
Bobby Bones
Possibly. No, no, no, no, no. You quit them last week, you fully quit them. You. Now you're neutral, and now you're back to positive.
Kevin
You wouldn't even wear a hat.
Eddie
Been a week. I got the hat back on.
Bobby Bones
That's a quick change.
Eddie
It's been a week, baby. Let's go.
Bobby Bones
You're so stupid. He even changed, like in the mid paragraph. He's like, neutral. Could be our year.
Eddie
We'll see what I say tomorrow. Can you imagine?
Bobby Bones
Oh, man. They win their Friday night game. Our team, the Chiefs.
Eddie
Our team, man.
Kevin
That's hard to say.
Eddie
I know, dude. I never said that in my life.
Bobby Bones
You got. You have to root for.
Kevin
I know, I know. I said, hey, if they win, you know, at least I'm getting some money out of it.
Bobby Bones
No, not at least. You got to root for.
Kevin
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Bobby Bones
They're playing in Brazil.
Kevin
Yeah.
Eddie
Oh, this is the Brazil.
Bobby Bones
And it's only on YouTube.
Eddie
What the. Dude, this is gonna get bad. Oh, my gosh. Like YouTube.
Bobby Bones
Why? It's like Logan Paul, the quarterback. Is it?
Eddie
Yeah.
Kevin
Like, what do you mean bad? Like to view it.
Eddie
Well, I don't have YouTube. Like is it.
Bobby Bones
Everybody has YouTube. You just go to YouTube.com.
Eddie
It'S not YouTube TV.
Bobby Bones
I believe it's just because.
Eddie
Because last year I had to get Peacock and then cancel it just to watch a Chiefs game.
Bobby Bones
Would you mind looking?
Kevin
It's just YouTube.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I thought so.
Eddie
So I just go to YouTube and.
Bobby Bones
He'S like, I don't have the Internet. No, dude.
Eddie
Okay.
Bobby Bones
We all. It's. It's everywhere.
Eddie
Well, that's easier then.
Bobby Bones
Okay, so I have those two games and then obviously my favorite team is the Panthers.
Eddie
Oh, yeah, your team.
Bobby Bones
Panthers at Jags and then just Raiders of Patriots. It's gets a little. Kevin gets our game. Now we're rooting for the park.
Kevin
Let's go, boys.
Bobby Bones
So that's good. Bucks at Falcons should be interesting.
Kevin
Yes. Need them to win.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. And also for that. That division. That's a quick division game, huh?
Kevin
Yeah. And probably the top two you think would be in that division hunt.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. It's like, yeah, I hope the Bucks are good. Falcons the favorite to win the division.
Kevin
Are they really?
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Which is weird.
Eddie
Who are Bengals playing?
Bobby Bones
The Bengals are playing the Browns.
Eddie
Let's go.
Bobby Bones
Hey. They'll play them twice this year.
Eddie
I know.
Kevin
Love that.
Bobby Bones
We like that. Dolphins at Colts. That's crap. That's like the worst game of the weekend.
Kevin
Yeah, it's bad.
Bobby Bones
That's bad. Cardinals at Saints, also pretty bad. But there's at least one team who's kind of okay.
Eddie
Cardinals.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Steelers at Jets. That's the Aaron Rodgers Bowl. He played for the Steelers. Yes, yes, yes.
Eddie
He plays for the Steelers. He used to play for the Jets.
Bobby Bones
There you go. Thank you. Giants at Commanders. It'll be interesting if the Commanders can be good again.
Eddie
I think they are, unfortunately.
Bobby Bones
Panthers. The Jags. My Panther team my whole life. Been rooting.
Kevin
Yeah. Found it.
Bobby Bones
Titans of Broncos, 49ers at Seahawks. Should be interesting.
Eddie
Oh, yeah.
Bobby Bones
And then we get to, like, the good games. The Lions at Packers will be awesome.
Kevin
Yes.
Eddie
Come on.
Bobby Bones
Or at least on paper, it should be awesome. Texans at Rams should be good. I wonder what's up with Stafford.
Kevin
Like, how bad is that?
Bobby Bones
Yeah, like, his back's always hurt him.
Kevin
I feel like he's always hurting. Something's always hurting.
Bobby Bones
And then Ravens at Bills. That's a big boy.
Kevin
That's gonna be awesome.
Bobby Bones
Is there no Monday night game this week?
Kevin
There is.
Bobby Bones
Do you know what it is?
Kevin
The Bears.
Eddie
That's right.
Kevin
Vikings.
Bobby Bones
Oh, yeah.
Kevin
Bears and Vikings.
Bobby Bones
Ravens and Bills. Like, that's AFC championship type game. It could. Yeah. Definitely could be.
Kevin
Oh, yeah.
Eddie
No, no. It's going to be the Chiefs.
Bobby Bones
It could be. For sure. For sure. It could be. But I'm saying that's tight. Yeah. AFC type.
Eddie
But we need the Chiefs in there, is what we need.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Yeah. So.
Eddie
All right.
Bobby Bones
There we go. Good luck, everybody.
Eddie
Thank you.
Kevin
Good luck to us, our teams.
Eddie
Our teams.
Bobby Bones

I think this one's trying to sucker you in, though. I think I would go less on this because I don't think they're going to need to throw the ball a whole bunch to beat the Browns. So I think I go less on that one. Brock Purity, More or less than 246 passing yards at Seattle. I'm also going to go less there. Derek Henry, more or less than 84 rushing yards at the Bills. I'm going to be week one hater. I'm going to go less again. I just feel like I'm going. I'm pretty much going all less this year. Jaden Daniels, more or less than one passing touchdown versus the Giants. The Giants suck. I'm going. Yeah. I'm going less. I'm four. I'm four lesses right now. Jamar Chase, More or less than one touchdown at the Browns. You know what? Let's go less.
Eddie
Dang, dude.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And Puka. More or less than 74 receiving yards versus the Texans. I'm going to go more.
Kevin
Wow.
Eddie
Shocker.
Bobby Bones

Bobby Bones
Now let's go over and talk with ESPN Senior writer, New York Times best selling author Seth Wickersham. He's got a new book coming out called American A Biography of the Quarterback that you can order now on Amazon. It actually comes out on Tuesday and he talks all about the quarterback position from way old school people to people of today. Great writer Eth Wickersham. Here he is, Seth Wickersham. All right, Seth Wickersham is on with us. And we were just talking about the book. Seth, by the way, again, it's American A Biography of a Quarterback which you can pre order but it's not even like a pre order because it comes out so soon that it's almost the same time. If you order it now, you'll get it basically when the book comes out, right?
Seth Wickersham
Absolutely. Great to see you, man. Good to be here.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Congratulations on the book. I think this is great. It's super timely. Let's talk about Arch Manning for a second. And you know, you write about how ruthless the recruitment was. How did they settle on Texas?
Seth Wickersham
So my goal with the book, you know, my what I wanted to do was show what it's like to do this very uniquely American job, very unique American responsibilities at like every level from current high school to college pro, retired hall of Famer. And Arch was interesting to me because, you know, it was a window into this entire iconic quarterback family. And so I was able to kind of like, or I was hoping to try to tell the entire Manning story through Arch and specifically through Arch's recruitment. And it got so competitive, I think that like even being there it was interesting to just to see especially in the NIL era, how hot it got for Art. You know, I think that it came down to Alabama, Georgia and Texas. The reasons why he picked Texas were, I think they were pretty wise. I mean, in no particular order, number one, Steve Sarkeesian. He's the play caller and the head coach. So he's not going anywhere. He's not going to be one of these guys who gets Poached to be a head coach somewhere else. Number two, he really liked that Texas might, you know, was going to be a team on the upswing and here's a chance to win a national championship there and kind of help elevate it. He liked that it was a school that had a ton of talent. And I think after being at Isidore Newman, which is obviously a pretty, pretty small school in New Orleans, he wanted to be on a team that had, you know, other five star players. And then finally, and this is the one that I personally find the most interesting, is that, you know, Austin's a big enough city. You don't even call it a college town. It's a city that he thought he could be pretty anonymous there. And that to me is the most interesting aspect of it all. Because here you have Arch Manning and, you know, member of like, you know, football royalty. And, you know, part of the reason why he picked Texas was because he thought, and we'll see how well that works out, that, you know, he could be anonymous there. And I think that, like, even some of the reporting in my book, you know, shows that, like, that itself was, was too difficult to ask for.
Bobby Bones
How influential were Archie Cooper, Peyton Eli, all in Arch's recruitment and actually helping him achieve his destination of Texas?
Seth Wickersham
He did it himself. And I think that, like, they're all really hyper aware of looking like they had a hidden hand. And Nelson Stewart, you know, so. So Arch's sophomore year, obviously they realized he was going to be a top prospect. So Nelson Stewart, the head coach at Newman, and Cooper Manning get together and they try to think about, like, how they want recruitment to look like. And this is looking like staring at a tsunami from a distance, like there's no stopping this thing. And so Cooper said, I want this to be a 1975 recruitment. And coach Stewart was like, what do you mean? And Cooper was like, I want you to run point. I want you to be the gatekeeper. And we're not going to take offers. We're not going to be posting on social media every time a school offers to us how grateful we are. We're going to do things a little bit different to try to give Arch a semblance of a normal high school life and maintain his love of the game. And I think that's really important. And so it was Arch driving things. And obviously the family members could weigh in when they wanted. But they went to University of Virginia where Arch's older sister May goes. And as they were walking around campus, Cooper was like, look this isn't a bad choice. It's a beautiful campus, great school. It's not football crazy. And I think maybe your life could be more normal here. And, you know, obviously, Virginia wasn't a school that he, you know, ended up considering. At the end of the day, it was him that was driving this. And he's the one who decided on Texas, really, just like Peyton did with Tennessee, and even Eli did, you know, back in the day with Ole Miss.
Bobby Bones
You're right about Joe Namath and before both of our time, obviously, Joe Namath, I think about 1969, him guaranteeing him wearing the fur coats, him being, like, in New York. But it was an odd juxtaposition because he played at Alabama. Like, all of that, we didn't get to experience it, but we're only catching it, like, through story, like folklore even. And so, yeah. What did you think of Joe Namath cultural impact once you started to really get into it at a deeper level?
Seth Wickersham
Well, I mean, look, all quarterbacks are cultural archetypes of John Unitis and Joe Namath. I mean, like, those two guys are huge pillars. And, you know, as I show in the book, there are other guys who. Who helped set them up, especially Bob Waterfield in the 1940s. He was married to Jane Russell. They were like the couple's first year, the country's first power couple. But really, Namath is, you know, a watershed moment in so many ways. And it was interesting because I've been with Joe Namath at events in New York, and I've been with him at one event at the University of Alabama at the stadium. And just my personal opinion, opinion, I thought that he was way more revered, way more sought after, almost looked like with a type of reverence that was different when he was at Alabama rather than the events in New York. I think that, like, Alabama has such a, you know, a vast, you know, history in. Throughout college football. And obviously, Namath has so much cultural template that he started once he was with the jets and kind of blossomed into, you know, this guy who first offered the idea of quarterback is like a lifestyle. But at Alabama, you know, he. He said that Bear Bryant said that he was the finest player he ever coached. And I think that, like, you know, when you listen to Joe Namath talk about his. His career, I think in a lot of ways you hear him talking about more joy when he was at Alabama than even during his heyday in New York.
Bobby Bones
I remember when the story first broke, when you were talking about the book, when it first was, hey, this is going to be a book that exists. And the Kayla Williams pre draft doubts came out like that had to feel a bit like a. Yeah, a tsunami a little bit. And people were, you know, they all had opinions on your opinion and also what you saw. Right. So what's. What's been the fallout and the follow up from that story where, you know, it. Maybe Caleb didn't want to go to Chicago.
Seth Wickersham
Well, they looked at both Caleb and Carl Williams looked at it really intensely. And I think that, like, one of the things that we forget, you know, quarterback has become so big in our. In our culture and so celebrated and mythologized that we think that they can do everything on their own. And in fact, like, outside circumstances, context, those types of things have a huge impact on how successful quarterbacks are at the end of the day. And so when you're looking at a team like Chicago who's going to draft you, and they have such a poor record of drafting quarterbacks, of developing them, of coaching offensive football, for Christ's sake, I think that it is very reasonable for the guy who's going to be the first pick in the draft to say, like, is there anything I can do? Are there any other options out there? Especially because he visited with Kevin o', Connell, head coach of the Vikings, reigning coach of the year, at the combine, and they really hit it off. And so I think that, like, what he was thinking of was, like, is there a way to get myself to Chicago, to Minnesota, to work for Coach o'? Connell? There really wasn't. And at the end of the day, the choices that he was faced with was either go to the Bears or do what John and Jack Elway did or Archie and Eli Manning did and really create a situation that was completely untenable. And he wasn't willing to go there, as he told me, you know, I didn't want to nuke the city. And I think that, like, you know, taking a step back here, I mean, Carl had huge fears about Chicago. He told me, you know, Chicago's where quarterbacks go to die. And he really wanted his son. He was willing to be a lead blocker for his son if he wanted to nuke the city. But, you know, as Caleb told me later, he wasn't really willing to do that. And it took a year, but they got what they wanted. And that's. They have an innovative offensive mind whose success is tied to Caleb Williams is. And, you know, I think that Caleb played well as a rookie. A rookie year is largely about survival. And I think that like, if I'm a Chicago fan, I got to be pretty. Pretty bullish right now on, you know, what's going to happen there, because I think that he's going to do really, really well.
Bobby Bones
So you think their mind has shifted because Ben Johnson is now the coach?
Seth Wickersham
Yes. So, I mean, look, the first year played out almost exactly to Carl Spheres, and, I mean, you know, about hating on the Bears here. The record is what the record is. I mean, you know, they fire their offensive coordinator. The head coach didn't even last the season. It was almost exactly what Carl feared most would happen to his son. But I think they've got it right. And I think that, like, you know, again, some people are kind of down on Caleb after his first year. I mean, I wasn't like that. I saw him make. He was incredibly tough, for one thing. He took a lot of hits, and he always got back up. And, you know, I think he made some pretty phenomenal throws in known passing situations late in games when they were down. Those are the hardest situations in the NFL. And so I think that, like, there's a lot to work on going forward. I do think that it'll take some time. Like, these things are never as automatic as we want them to be, but I do think that having a coach like Ben Johnson, who really changed Jared Goff's career, I think is going to be a great thing for Caleb Williams.
Bobby Bones
What'd you learn about Patrick Mahomes, as in more than. More of the nuance of Patrick Mahomes that we don't get to see?
Seth Wickersham
I mean, Patrick's fascinating, right, because he's, you know, he's so. He. He has come onto the scene so quickly and, you know, established a dynasty so. So quickly, even in a way that Brady didn't. I mean, you know, Brady wasn't throwing 50 touchdown passes his first couple years in the NFL that, you know, he's somebody I had to look at and not just become, because he's become like, such a cultural phenomenon with everyone kind of copying his haircut, but because I wanted to know how he managed fame. Because, I mean, you know, fame in 2025 is much different than fame in 2000, and it's much different than fame in 1970. And, you know, he. He leaned into his religion a lot more than I think people realize. And I think that, like, the challenge for quarterbacking has become so big that I think that, like, you have to.
Kevin
Almost.
Seth Wickersham
How you deal with fame and the pressure of. Of playing the position, I think, is a makeup that's almost as important as your ability to throw the ball, to be honest with you. That's how big it's gotten. And in order to keep your performance ahead of your notoriety, you have to have something that grounds you. And that, for Mahomes, is religion. Like, I think that it catches people a little bit by surprise that, like, someone so gifted, you know, roots. Roots so much of his. How do I put it? It's like his. His awareness in religion. And, you know, sometimes people roll their eyes when they talk about religion in sports. You know, when it came to people like him and her cousins, I wanted to take them at face value and at their wor and actually learn about how religion helps them navigate again. What's a really tricky space?
Bobby Bones
I feel like what you just said there is, you know, what's the cost of being a quarterback? And what are you going to sacrifice in order to get these great things? What are some of the costs that maybe we don't see, but they are really having to sacrifice in order to get to this level?
Seth Wickersham
I think that, like, we sort of, like, look at the beautiful throw in the pressure situation and wonder how they do that. And I think that, like, for them, that's the easy part. It's everything else that comes with it that's difficult. And how they manage that stuff, I think ends up being a huge thing. Look, it is. It is really, really hard. And I think that you have to study, you have to. There's so much pressure on you that I think that, like, these guys have to create an ecosystem where they're kind of at the center of it, and they're almost detached and separate and isolated from reality. In a lot of ways, as crazy as that sounds, it's. In that way, it's very similar to, like, a politician or a pop star, whatever that might be. They have to be at the center of an ecosystem that, you know, protects them and insecure. The greater quarterbacks get, I found, the more they vol, they volley between driving insecurity and almost like, unreal confidence. And I think that, like, it's one of the things that's, like, even doing that, even making that leap to saying, well, I'm. I'm willing to be at the center of this ecosystem and have everything revolve around me is difficult. Like, you know, I spent a lot of time with Andrew Luck over the years, and that, as much as the injuries, if not more, I think is what drove him out of football, because I don't think he liked who he was as a quarterback. I don't think he liked it being, you know, Andrew's world 24 7. I think that when he. He was injured and he wasn't playing football and he had a chance to really examine himself, he was like, I don't like who this person is. And I think that, like, he tried to do it where he was a quarterback and trying to be a different type of person. And that worked for a little bit, but it really wasn't sustainable. And at the end of the day, he kind of picked himself more than the job. And so that's. Those are the things that I think are just fascinating that. That fans don't see. I mean, quarterback is not a job that you play. It's something that you are.
Bobby Bones
When you wrote this book, obviously you consumed yourself with quarterbacks of past, present, and even. We'll call Arch Manning quarterback of the future. What's like the through line with all of these guys that are super successful?
Seth Wickersham
I think it's the willy. It's the same thing that allows the lead singer to step on a stage in front of all these people with a microphone in front of him. You know, I think that you just have to have, you know, call it, you know, ego, confidence, ruthlessness, whatever it is, to step on the stage and have everyone watch you and know that even though you won't admit it. I think that, like, there's a part of these great quarterbacks that think that they know more really than anyone else and they might be kind of superior in some ways. And that includes, you know, teammates that they really like and adore and even the head coach. I think that, like, they have to figure out a way to again navigate this pressure. I mean, when I. It's not a history of the quarterback, but I do have historical aspects of it. And when I went back to 1906, when the forward pass was legalized in college football, I was thinking it was going to be like a slow build to the quarterback kind of having its lofty cultural status. And instead it went fast. I mean, we as Americans almost seem to notice that the spiral, you know, a forward pass was something very unique and mystical and magical and work worth mythologizing. And, you know, even like 1921 quarterback named Bo McMillan at Teeny Center College in Kentucky, they go up to Cambridge, Massachusetts, and they beat Harvard. New York Times called it the biggest college football upset of the first half of the 20th century. And he returns to Kentucky and they threw him a parade. And the governor was there. And the governor is saying, remember at this time, you know, politicians are about as high in cultural, you know, job as you can possibly have. The governor is saying, I would do anything to trade places with this guy right now. And, you know, sure enough, soon his wedding announcement is in the New York Times, and, you know, he's in Hollywood with starlets, and his life really took off. And again, that was relatively early. And so I think that, like, from the moment those types of things happened, things just changed for quarterback. When I was. When I was doing the book, I sat down with Steve Young and we. We started listing all of the hats that a quarterback has to wear, from matinee idol to field general to astonishing asshole at times to amateur psychologists, all these things. And we stopped at, like, 17, and frankly, like, I think we could have kept going. And so it's just a different job than anything else that really we offer in American sports and I think global sports, too.
Bobby Bones
The book is called American Kings, a biography of The Quarterback, out September 9th. You can get it on Amazon. One question that's not super book related. I'm going to ask about Bill Belichick, because I know you spent a lot of time covering Bill. What do you think his office is like in. In Chapel Hill this week?
Seth Wickersham
Oh, my God. I mean, look, when. When Bill Belichick loses a game, that pain and that misery takes on an atmospheric type of, you know, presence. And, you know, when he's in staff meetings, I mean, these things can go for hours, and he'll mumble at the lowest of his voice. Like every coach has to lean in and hear him and listen to him talking about all of the things that they did wrong and all of the things that they have to do better. And so, look, I think that, like, today, tomorrow, Thursday are not going to be very good days in Chapel Hill. But the thing that's interesting about Bill, for as miserable as he can be and as hard as he can push his assistant coaches, I mean, he's kind of fundamentally an optimist. And by Friday, he will change his. His tone and change his tune. And I think that, like, he'll be working really hard to put his team not only in a position to win, but to give them confidence. And I think that, like, it's one of the aspects of him that I think is really underappreciated. And it comes from a place that's not like Vince Lombardi or Newt Rockne. You know, it's a brainier type of thing where he says, look, if you do these things, this will put you in a decent position to make a play. That could change this game. I mean, I thought that he was going to come into college football, you know, coach like he was on a warpath and slap around Dabo Swinney's offense and all these things. And I think that, like, look, there's a big talent gap and there's a learning curve even for, you know, the greatest coach of the super bowl era.
Bobby Bones
Seth, really appreciate the time. I hope everybody checks out American Kings and I love your work just generally too. So good luck. I hope the book sells a gabillion copies and hopefully we'll talk to you again soon.

So, big news, big announcement here. Eddie got a new job.
Kevin
What?
Eddie
Yep, got him. You know, gotta make some money somehow.
Kevin
Influencer.
Bobby Bones
I thought you were doing it more for the love.
Eddie
No, it is for the love. I don't get paid for it. I don't get paid for it. But on Fridays, boys, I'm gonna be busy Friday nights. I'm part of the chain gang. What? For the high school football team. No way. Yeah, it was last minute. You know, a buddy of mine, he's been doing it for like two years and I think one of Their guys got sick. I wally pipped him. I said, dude, I'm available. I can jump in. And I did it on Friday night, and, dude, I was pretty good at it. The only time I screwed up one time.
Bobby Bones
Which one do you do?
Eddie
Yeah, well, both, because. Which way are you going on the field?
Bobby Bones
Well, there's a marker holder. Yeah, I consider that part of the chain gang.
Eddie
The marker holder is Doug. That dude's been there for 40 years.
Bobby Bones
Oh, you don't take Doug's butt.
Eddie
No, no, no. Doug's been doing this for, like, 40 years. So, yeah, I don't do Doug job. I do either end of it. Am I the first down or am I where the ball starts?
Bobby Bones
So how'd you screw up?
Eddie
So when it was first in goal, I put the marker on the goal line, and the guy's like, throw it on the ground.
Bobby Bones
Oh, you don't need to, because the goal line is the marker.
Eddie
Right? I. I didn't think about it. I just thought, like, hey, maybe they need a reference. Guys, the goal's right here.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, that ain't so bad. Rookie move. But that's not, like, bad.
Kevin
Yeah, I was thinking, like, you got it, like, chained up, like, all, like, caught up. You know what I mean? And you had to break it up and pause the game.
Eddie
That's. That's a little nerve wracking because it's along the sidelines. So when you're rid front of the visitor team, they could trip on the chain. Couple times they stepped on it, and I got to be like, boys, watch the chain.
Bobby Bones
Wait, do you do the thing where if they're coming over, you just drop everything and move away?
Eddie
That's what they told me to do. Don't risk it the first time. Dude, there was a run that came straight to me, and I used the stick to guard it.
Bobby Bones
I don't think that's the way it's supposed to do it because it could hurt a player.
Eddie
Yeah. And the stick bent. So now we may need to get a new stick.
Bobby Bones
So in your first game, you put the stick on the goal line. Not that bad.
Eddie
Shouldn't do that, though.
Bobby Bones
But you. But you bent the stick.
Eddie
I bent the stick.
Bobby Bones
Did the player hit it?
Eddie
Yeah. So, like, the players came to me, and they were. And I just kind of stuck it out like a shield, like.
Bobby Bones
Like you were blocking yourself.
Seth Wickersham
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
From the player by using the metal rod.
Eddie
Yeah. And they landed on the bottom of the stick, which then I let go of it. But by that time, they'd already stepped on the Stick. And it's been. It's a little war.
Bobby Bones
But they didn't teach you just, if there's. If it's coming over, drop it.
Eddie
They did, but, dude, I mean, it's so fast. You can't really think that quick.
Bobby Bones
Do you ever get distracted and, like, you just start thinking about the, like, oh, God. Because I think I would be doing that.
Eddie
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, dude, you got to stay in it. I think the best part about it is that you are in the visitor sidelines, so you're hearing everything.
Bobby Bones
Is there a way the chain gang could cheat in high school?
Eddie
Absolutely.
Bobby Bones
How?
Eddie
I mean, once you start realizing what green tomato. Green tomato. Once you realize what green tomato means, and when they call it, you could easily text because, I mean, I have my phone out checking scores.
Bobby Bones
You check the score? Absolutely. That's why the player ran into the stick. Sure.
Eddie
Yeah, dude. I mean, it's. It's a. It's a high school game. They're boring times. And you're just like, they're never. It's like. It's like third and 20. They're never gonna get a first down. And here they come. And I'm like, oh, crap.
Bobby Bones
Put you over there watching chit on tick tock.
Eddie
Yeah, but dude, I. I think they have AirPods in.
Bobby Bones
Eddie's got AirPods in over on the side watching tiktoks.
Eddie
I could easily text the other team and be like, yeah, dude, they're throwing green tomato every. Every third.
Kevin
What was green tomato?
Bobby Bones
I don't remember.
Eddie
That's an example. But like, when you start figuring out the.
Bobby Bones
He's the Connor Stallions of the high school.
Kevin
He wears a different hat each time, dude.
Eddie
But it was cool, man. Like, I'm. I'm kind of excited about this.
Bobby Bones
Did you get, like a little power trip?
Eddie
A little bit.
Bobby Bones
Did you wear the uniform?
Eddie
No. See, that's where I screwed up. And I don't know if I messed the te. If I missed it in the text, but I wore like, a white flower shirt and like, they were all. The chain gang wore black.
Bobby Bones
And I'm like, did you know you were going to do it going into the game?
Eddie
Yeah, they text me two hours before the game.
Bobby Bones
And you still wore a flowered shirt.
Eddie
I didn't even think about. I thought, you know what I thought. I thought they were gonna give me one of those orange fluorescent bibs, and they never did. So there I was with a flowered polo shirt.
Kevin
Oh, man.
Bobby Bones
And this is high school.
Eddie
High school, man. Big time. It was just cool like, you know, there was. So we were on the visitor side and some guy comes up to me, he's like, hey, man. So I do the chain gang for our high school. Like, you guys are doing a great job. Thank you, man.
Bobby Bones
Dang respect to my chain. Garrett.
Eddie
Chain gang respecting.
Kevin
Do they have the digital ones at all?
Eddie
Yeah, that's what Doug carries. Doug carries the. The down.
Kevin
Okay.
Eddie
And he just follows the ref. Like, wherever the ref says the ball is, Doug goes to the ref, hits the. All he does is hit the. The button and he goes, 1, 2, 3, 4. I'm flipping it over instead of doing the flip. And he said, dude, is a game changer.
Bobby Bones
Did you ever have to go on and do a measure?
Eddie
No, I never went out on the field to measure the whole game.
Bobby Bones
They never call for a measurement index.
Kevin
Card so you can put it right in between the football.
Eddie
Dude, what's crazy is, like, when. When the quarters. When the quarter shift happens, like, how do you. Like I was just kind of confused. Like, how do they know? Because you got to flip to the other side of the field, but they've got to keep that same mark. And the ref just does this thing where, like, he counts the links, puts his finger on it, follow me. And he goes all the way to this side, kind of does a little measurement and says, put it right there.
Kevin
Well, you should mark it on those. On the. On a 35. 35 yard line, right?
Eddie
Yeah.
Kevin
March it on there. So then it's a 35 on the other side.
Eddie
It's a little bit of math, though, because he's gotta kind of move it.
Bobby Bones
Exactly where it was, like within one yard. Like, there's different places you can put it inside of one yard. Yeah, I guess he's finding that specific spot.
Eddie
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
We can learn so much from you, dude.
Eddie
The ref was on it. If you guys have any questions about doing the chain gang or any kind of first down rules, like, let me know.
Bobby Bones
I don't think you know them yet.
Kevin
Number one rule, drop the poll.
Bobby Bones
I would think as soon as someone's coming, drop it. Yes, they told me that because the one that's not getting hit holds it, which holds it into its place. It keeps its integrity. Yeah. If both of them drop. But you don't need both of them to drop because they're 10 yards apart. If both of them drop, you have a chance to lose your. The integrity of where the ball is, right? Yeah, but both drop.
Eddie
But I mean, the time. The time I stuck it out, I was the first down. So I Felt like that runner needed to know where to get to. You know what I mean? I feel like it would have been an injustice to drop the stick a little premature before he knows where that yard marker is.
Bobby Bones
Are they doing pylons and first downs as well?
Eddie
No, just me, man.
Bobby Bones
Dang. All that pressure.
Eddie
Just me.
Bobby Bones
The weight of the world is on you.
Kevin
Are you worried about getting hurt at all? No, I'd be worried about somebody rolling up on me.
Eddie
They did tell me that when you.
Bobby Bones
Have a force field, a big metal pole in front of you, you get hit by anything.
Eddie
It's not that hard, though, dude. It's like. Like. It's like, weak aluminum.
Bobby Bones
I would think so.
Kevin
I hope so.
Eddie
I thought it was, like, a big rod, dude. I'm like. With a big pad on it, but it's not. It's like, a little weak flag. It's just a aluminum stick.
Bobby Bones
How could you cheat, though? Not passing along information. Could you manipulate? Like, let's say your team needs another half foot. If you worked on the same page with the person who is running where the ball started, you could have them, like, back up three inches, and you could slowly move yours three inches, right?
Eddie
Yeah. I thought they would check the tightness of the chain a little more. They didn't. And there were some times where I'd look over and like, dude, that chain is loose. I'm probably giving these guys half a yard right now.
Kevin
Dang.
Eddie
Yeah. So I could cheat like that. I can give them a half a yard.
Bobby Bones
Do you get paid?
Eddie
No. I did ask, but no. No pay, no payment. It's all volunteer work.
Bobby Bones
Well, they get what they get, then.
Kevin
Yeah.
Eddie
I do get free concessions, though.
Bobby Bones
Like, oh, now we're talking.
Eddie
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Unlimited Frito P halftime.
Eddie
I got. It was free to get in.
Kevin
Well, that's good.
Eddie
Which. Which they didn't believe me because I had that flower shirt on. I was like, I promise I'm working chain game.
Kevin
How early did you have to show up?
Eddie
Just 45. He was there at noon. The lines on the field, he's running.
Bobby Bones
He's doing runs with the poles, like, doing sprints.
Eddie
Like Kevin said, you got to make sure that chain's not tied up.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, but you only do every other game, right?
Eddie
Home. Just home games? Yeah, because the home game supplies the.
Bobby Bones
Chain game, so basically every other game. So how many is that total?
Eddie
Five or something.
Bobby Bones
What? So are you bound to do it now? I like, what if something happens on a Friday?
Eddie
I said, look, put me on the list. I'm like, if you think I did a good job. Put me on the list. I want to do this every. Every home game. And they said, all right, well, what.
Bobby Bones
About the guy who normally did it?
Eddie
He's always going to do it. Oh, well, the guy. Wally Pipped. Yeah. I don't know. No, there was. I'm telling you, after the game, there was no talk of that guy.
Bobby Bones
You think you did such a good job, they forgot him?
Eddie
I think so.
Kevin
Did you make friends with the guys? Other than. There's another one, though, right? There's three.
Eddie
Yeah, yeah, yeah. My buddy. My buddy Reed.
Kevin
Okay.
Eddie
My buddy Reed. I'm not. Not our read. A different read. But I've known him for, like, three or four years, so. So Reed and I are tight. Doug, though, Doug was tough, man. Like, it was almost like he. He looked me up and down, like, who. Who do you think you are? Like, have you ever chain gang before.
Bobby Bones
You had to prove yourself?
Eddie
Yeah, yeah. Because Doug's been doing it forever.
Bobby Bones
Classic.
Eddie
Yeah. And I think Doug. I'm not 100 sure, but I think Doug was texting the updates to the.
Bobby Bones
As it was going. Seems like a little too many updates.
Eddie
Yeah. You know, like, every time, like, they'd score, like.
Kevin
Yeah, but they don't have anybody there, like, reporting, probably.
Eddie
But I just. Every time we.
Bobby Bones
I don't think they have the reporting manpower to put somebody at every game now.
Kevin
Maybe not.
Eddie
And what's that. What's that website? The high school Max Preps. So maybe he was just sending them.
Bobby Bones
They may keep it updated then, so people can check scores live. Like, Max Preps.
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Oh, congratulations on your big gig.
Eddie
Thank you.
Kevin
Dude, that's pretty awesome, man.
Bobby Bones
Moving up in the sports world.
Eddie
Thank you, man. It's pretty cool.
Bobby Bones
You ever think it'd be fun to be a referee?
Eddie
Yes.
Bobby Bones
Like, that would be cool, right? It's a lot of school. I would only want to be a referee on the biggest. Biggest of levels, and that doesn't work. It doesn't work like that. It's like you said, I want to be a major league baseball player. No, no, you got to go through rookie ball, you know? So.
Eddie
I don't know, dude. Refs seems like such a stressful position. Like you said, you can't daydream at all.
Bobby Bones
You don't think being a ref. NFL will be fun? Like, getting to be in it, see it, hear it, you know, all the insides.
Eddie
I think it would be fun until they're like, eddie, what is it? And I'd be like, I. Guys, it could go either and he.
Bobby Bones
Just runs off, runs in the tunnel like Forrest Gump.
Eddie
Like, it's. It's hard because I know there was this one play on Friday night when. When there was a holding, right. And it was like a holding on. On an offensive line was holding. And then the coach was yelling. The holding was right in front of you. And then the ref looks at the coach like, I only have two eyes. I was looking at the runner, you know, and it's like, well, it's still your job. But I'm thinking, like, that's tough. Everyone's just like, the holding was right there. But you're like, dude, I was looking at the ball, not the hold.
Bobby Bones
So you don't think it'd be cool to be NFL, mlb?
Eddie
No, no, I think it'd be too stressful, man.
Bobby Bones
No, I think that would be so cool. I think it'd be fun to, like, go to school to do that. Mike, you think it'd be fun? I think that would be awesome. I wouldn't talk to the coaches.
Kevin
Can't.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Why is this guy even, like, humoring the coach?
Eddie
But even, like, you know, you watch the college games, like, their coaches are always just, like, talking to the ref, so you gotta, like, somehow humor them. Yeah, yeah. It's a relationship, I guess.
Bobby Bones
You don't got.
Eddie
I wouldn't just ignore them. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Ignore them completely.
Eddie
The whole time.
Bobby Bones
Doing my job. I think they have specific ones on the sideline. Judges.
Eddie
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Who are there to actually communicate with the coaches that job accounts.
Kevin
Yeah. That would suck.
Bobby Bones
Especially when you get somebody that just like Bobby Petrino used to just bite heads off. Nick Saban used to bite heads off. So that's fun. Congratulations.
Eddie
There was a weather guy when I was. When I worked the news. He would work Friday. He was a ref on Friday nights.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Eddie
Jim Spencer.
Bobby Bones
Go, Jim.
Eddie
He was a weatherman by day, by the. During the week. And then Friday nights, he was a ref. That's awesome.
Bobby Bones
That's cool. Kevin had a. He says one of the top three moments of his life.
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Eddie, do you want to guess what it is before we. Before we tell you?
Eddie
Three moments.
Bobby Bones
He said he had a top three moment in his life happened.
Eddie
Is this one of the influence is an influencer deal? Like, what did you get, like, 10,000 likes or something?
Bobby Bones
I did see your new drink station.
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Influencing video. Nice job.
Kevin
Thank you.
Eddie
I thought you already did Drink station.
Bobby Bones
No, he does. I'm at the drink station. Right.
Eddie
Oh, it's.
Bobby Bones
Oh.
Eddie
Oh, it's a drink station.
Kevin
It doesn't have Anything to do with drink station?
Bobby Bones
No, but I saw that.
Kevin
Okay.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Thank you. Yeah.
Eddie
So it's not that. Something with the Patriots?
Bobby Bones
I don't know. You get three guesses. He had a top three life moment. How well do you know him?
Eddie
Well, I know Kevin pretty well. Top three life moment. You just had babies. You recently got married. So then this is going to be the third. I'm going to say you got invited to do something with the Celtics.
Bobby Bones
Okay, that's guess one.
Eddie
Yeah. Or the Patriots. Guess two.
Bobby Bones
That can be guess one.
Eddie
Okay. Gosh, I don't know. I mean, what else does this dude like?
Kevin
I thought you know me.
Eddie
I do, I do. You're a Patriots fan. Oh, are you going to Boston for a vacation?
Bobby Bones
Okay, let's guess two.
Kevin
Two. Everything's Boston related.
Bobby Bones
If he's going though, it hasn't actually happened.
Kevin
It already happened.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, it already happened. Top three.
Eddie
Oh, it already happened. Did you post about it?
Bobby Bones
No, but I saw a post that was.
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
It adjacent.
Kevin
Yeah.
Eddie
He got an autograph. Tom Brady ball or something.
Bobby Bones
Oh, that'd have been cool.
Kevin
Yeah, I would have posted that.
Eddie
Well, maybe not.
Bobby Bones
It has to do with golf.
Eddie
You got a hole in one.
Bobby Bones
No, that have been awesome.
Kevin
That'd be number one over your kids.
Eddie
Okay, golf. He's gonna. Oh, it already happened. Did you play, like a cool course?
Bobby Bones
Where did you guys play?
Kevin
Cedar Crest. Murphy'sboro.
Eddie
Okay.
Bobby Bones
You played that one. I don't even know that one, honestly.
Kevin
It was a good course, though. It was a cool course.
Eddie
Okay. He got an eagle.
Bobby Bones
Oh, that have been pretty cool.
Eddie
Okay.
Kevin
You're setting the bar so high.
Eddie
So what? He got a birdie. He got his first birdie. What did he.
Kevin
He's out of guesses, right?
Bobby Bones
Baby's first birdie. All right, you can go ahead.
Kevin
I hit a drive as straight as can be. Over 300 yards.
Eddie
I mean. Okay. Okay.
Kevin
Dude, you know that feeling?
Bobby Bones
Hey, what's your. What's your tone about?
Kevin
You know that feeling? You're not even pumped for me.
Bobby Bones
What's your tone? He had a tone. I'm curious to know your tone.
Eddie
Yeah, he didn't care over 300 yards. Okay. Like, good job, Good job. It's probably gonna happen again if you did it once.
Bobby Bones
See, I feel like he's downplaying it downhill when.
Kevin
I'm glad you. I'm glad you weren't there because everyone else was stoked.
Eddie
We haven't had rain in like a month. No.
Bobby Bones
What were the factors? I'm asking you.
Kevin
Oh, yeah, no, it Was just. No downhill. No. Maybe a little bit of wind. I think some cross wind was coming, actually. Okay. Yeah. And then it went right through. Over the. There's this tree line that came out like halfway through the fairway. Boom. Over the trees, tall trees. And then right over. It's like 308 yards straight as can be.
Eddie
I mean, I've never done it. I don't.
Bobby Bones
I mean, think in the history of your golf.
Eddie
Probably hit a car path, something kept rolling.
Bobby Bones
Oh, that's a good point.
Eddie
But a legit 300 yard drive.
Kevin
Yeah, this was legit.
Eddie
That's not in my arsenal.
Kevin
It was my best day of driving by far.
Bobby Bones
All around.
Kevin
All around. Yeah. I only had like four bad drives, probably.
Eddie
Wow.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Kevin
And I had like five. I had four really good ones in a row, and that was the best one.
Eddie
So you said you went over trees. So was this kind of just like you had to go that way if you were gonna.
Kevin
Yeah, it was either like, you know, hit to the right of the trees a little bit and go around or just go straight over the trees. To be honest with you, I was just hitting it and it went over the trees. I did not expect to do that. But it went right over the trees. I mean, it was a monster shot.
Eddie
I will say that Kevin's drive. I mean, he doesn't need a peanut play very well. But the driver. You struggle with the driver.
Kevin
I do.
Bobby Bones
Was there.
Kevin
I do.
Bobby Bones
Was there a reason to take a shot at him?
Eddie
I think so.
Bobby Bones
What does he normally shoot then, in your opinion?
Eddie
Over 101, 110 around.
Kevin
Oh, no, not that high.
Bobby Bones
Okay.
Eddie
1, 105, 101 maybe. Yeah. I mean, it's over 100 for sure. And so I've. I've played with Kevin and the driver is left, right, straight.
Kevin
I. I always slice it it. Yesterday when we played, it was. It was on, dude. On. I've never seen it like this.
Eddie
So I guess this is cool for him. It's the start of something for you.
Kevin
So much more fun when you can hit a driver.
Eddie
Yeah, it is.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, that's true. Well, congratulations.
Eddie
What do you think? What do you think?
Bobby Bones
About what? What's the question you're asking?
Eddie
300 and whatever yard drive.
Bobby Bones
Okay. I think he's an athletic guy. If he's having a good day driving and he's swinging really hard. Sure.
Kevin
It's just a great feeling, you guys know. Sure.
Eddie
When you get a hold of it.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. It is a great feeling.
Eddie
I thought you had like an eagle, I think.
Bobby Bones
I don't really think It's a top 30 moment for you, though. I think.
Kevin
I mean, at the time.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I think it's probably like a top 70. Nah. 700 moment for you.
Kevin
Yeah. Somewhere in there between three and 700.
Bobby Bones
How much golf do you play? We haven't played in week.
Kevin
How much do I play? I've only played twice this year. That was only my second time.
Bobby Bones
And how did that. That round get together?
Kevin
I have family in town. My brother.
Bobby Bones
Wait, I thought you were with Ray. Did you not play golf with Ray?
Kevin
No.
Bobby Bones
At all?
Kevin
No, I haven't played with Ray in like two years.
Eddie
See something.
Bobby Bones
Maybe Ray and Pitts were playing golf together.
Kevin
Oh, I. I played with pits. My brother. My brother doesn't look like. Oh, it was my brother and dad.
Bobby Bones
Maybe it was that I saw a picture of you guys playing golf.
Kevin
Yeah, yeah. Pitts, my brother and my dad.
Bobby Bones
How does that round get together?
Kevin
My dad and brother in town, and we're like, we got to play around in golf. We had a nice Sunday, and then Pitts plays a lot of golf. So I was like, you want to come with? He was our fourth.
Bobby Bones
How hard is it to get on that course day of or day before?
Kevin
I booked it a week in advance.
Bobby Bones
Got it.
Kevin
So that's.
Bobby Bones
Why was it packed out there?
Kevin
It was. It wasn't that bad.
Bobby Bones
We.
Kevin
Okay. We actually had this guy's. This group behind us, right? This guy hit into the opposite fairway, and then we were waiting for him to hit up, and he hit up and he had another really bad shot. Dude, this guy threw. I'm not kidding.
Seth Wickersham
He.
Kevin
Happy Gilmore just club. Club back to his car. He threw it at his cart from like 20 yards away. I've never seen somebody that mad.
Eddie
I don't get that.
Bobby Bones
The weirdest part about people that throw clubs is they usually aren't good golfers anyway. So you don't expect to. How can you expect to be good when you aren't good anyway, right?
Kevin
And then the next hole, they hit up on us.
Bobby Bones
Like, I can understand if you were a pro golfer and you wanted to throw clubs, because you probably don't hit that many bad. So when you do, it's a shock to your system. So what do you do when you're shocked? You throw a club.
Eddie
But, like, Lunchbox, he's not a great golfer.
Bobby Bones
No, he throws his clubs. It's like, what do you expect? You always suck, right? Yeah.
Kevin
Like, I would never throw my clubs because I'm like, what do I expect?
Eddie
Well, and then plus, they're expensive.
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
It's like you're throwing money.
Kevin
I know.
Bobby Bones
You're damaging money.
Eddie
That's what I thought.
Kevin
I was like, dude, you're not getting free ones. If you break that one, you're not sponsored.
Bobby Bones
Obviously, you're not sponsored by how bad you are.
Eddie
So this guy hit. Hit on you guys?
Kevin
Yeah. And then the next hole, he hit on us. I think. We think he was so mad that he was playing so bad. And then he hit up on us on the next hole. I'm not kidding. Like, five feet behind my brother. We were walking off the green.
Eddie
Was it the same hole, though? Did he hit 300 yards, too?
Kevin
No, he couldn't. He couldn't do that.
Bobby Bones
And he's looking for a way to find Hayden's heart.
Kevin
I know, I know.
Eddie
I don't know if it's just the hole, maybe.
Kevin
And he did it. So get this. He did it right in front of the. The Marshall literally sitting on that hole, watching all of us. He did it right in front of the Marshall. And so we turned around like, hey, what the F? Blah, blah, blah, you know? And then the Marshall came up, and he's like, like, I saw that happen. Like, I'll talk to him. Like, okay. Like, come on, man. We look back, he literally has his arms around the guy. It's like, the Marshall knows the guy.
Bobby Bones
Oh, boy.
Kevin
We're like, okay, well, what do we do?
Eddie
And plus, the Marshalls, like, what are they, 80 years old?
Kevin
Yeah, he was. Yeah. But it's like, what do we. Like, we were pissed. But then we were having such a good time. We don't want to ruin our mood. So then the next hole, we just kind of sped up, and then we never had any problems after that.
Bobby Bones
I get triggered, and people hit on me.
Kevin
Yes. That we were all. I mean, we were having such a good time seven holes in, and then got triggered. Weird.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. I worked on a golf course, and so I did maintenance on a golf course. So people were hitting on me. Is a little traumatic because the workers would just get tagged with balls and so without anybody even. Because we had to water greens specifically if it got really hot because there was not hydration. What's the word with the water system? Irrigation. Thank you. The irrigation system. 95 of the time, unless it got really hot and it couldn't keep up. So we had to go out real quick, stop it. Go on a golf cart, plug it in, and spray the greens of the water. And obviously, we're on the green.
Kevin
Right.
Bobby Bones
With a hose on the green. And they would still hit on us. I saw guys heads get whacked, like, cut.
Kevin
They wouldn't even, like, make sure you're looking at them or something.
Bobby Bones
And, like, the foot you got hit? Yeah, and like, the foot. Or I'd be like, weed eating or something on the siding. People would hit. So I have a little PTSD with getting hit with golf balls. But once we were all playing in Austin, and it was me, Eddie, a couple of our friends at my course, and these guys kept hitting on us. And so we got up to this hole and they hit on us again. It was like four. And so I'm pissed. So I'm like, all right, if this. If I have to fight, I guess I will. I don't want to. I'm not a fighter. But I'm gonna have some words because I'm pissed. And so they're coming at me, and I'm. I'm standing there and I got my boy behind me, and I'm like, well, if we're gonna fight, I guess we'll fight. And they're coming, and I'm like, you guys gotta stop it. And I look back and my boy's driven off and left me.
Kevin
Oh, no.
Eddie
Bobby was all alone.
Bobby Bones
No clubs, no boy.
Kevin
What the heck?
Bobby Bones
He's like 200 yards down in the golf. And I'm like, oh, my God, I'm about to get whooped by four dudes. Yeah.
Eddie
Cuz talking crap on a golf course is cool when you have a foursome.
Bobby Bones
Or you got a wood in your hand.
Eddie
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You got backup and you got clubs.
Bobby Bones
And I didn't need all four people people. I just needed at least one with some clubs. Yeah. Because I was having a word. Now look back for my support. Oh, my God. Well, sorry.
Eddie
All alone.
Bobby Bones
You guys have a good day.
Kevin
The first thing I thought about was that hockey guy that just whooped that dude.
Eddie
Oh, yeah.
Kevin
A couple months ago. And I was like, I'm gonna be that guy today that gets whooped. No, no, the hockey guy.
Bobby Bones
Oh, the one hockey guy you're gonna be. The whooper.
Kevin
Yeah, the whooper.
Bobby Bones
Well, congratulations on your top three moments.
Eddie
Congrats, man.
Kevin
That's amazing. Thank you.
Bobby Bones
Why you mean?
Eddie
That's awesome, man.
Bobby Bones
That's it. Enjoy football, everybody. Go cowboys tonight.
Eddie
Go Cowboys.
Bobby Bones
Are you betting?
Eddie
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Did you already bet it while I said that or are you gonna do it later?
Eddie
I'm gonna do it later. I might use a no sweat bet.
Bobby Bones
Oh, the ghost leg.
Eddie
The ghost thing that's built for you, dude. That is my kind of perk. I think I only get like two or three or something.
Bobby Bones
We have a ghost token. This is for DraftKings. Yeah, Ghost Token.
Eddie
Do you know about this?
Kevin
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And then you can use it, your ghost token. If one of your legs doesn't hit.
Kevin
So awesome.
Eddie
And like, especially Saturdays, I like to do 16, 17 leg parlays. So if I hit 16 out of.
Bobby Bones
17, 10 ghost legs, dude, tokens like crazy. Like you're going to freaking showbiz Pizza, Chuck E. Cheese, whatever the reference is. That's it. Thank you guys for being here. If you do go to DraftKings and sign up, it would help us a ton if you put in the code Bob Bobby Sports. Like it helps us because they're a huge partner of the show and we depend on that. Keep us on the air like we're on the air.
Eddie
Yeah. Keep the lights on.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. But we. If you do it, that's awesome. Put in Bobby Sports as the code and we will see you guys early next week. Unless something crazy happens with the cowboys tonight.
Eddie
Like they win by like 50.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. We may have an emergency pod tomorrow, so no podcast. Yeah.
Kevin
Yeah.
