Amy
Okay, this is a spoiler review of Maternal Instinct. We said we were going to do this podcast. This is full of spoilers. I'm just saying this over and over again in case you stumbled upon this podcast because it automatically rolled into it and you haven't seen Maternal Instinct on Netflix. This is your chance to go away right now because we're going to do spoilers right now.
Mike
Right now. Spoilers.
Amy
Okay.
Mike
It's good.
Amy
Do you do spoiler podcasts on movie?
Mike
Yeah, and I Just put real big in the title so people know.
Amy
So this show on Netflix, how it was introduced to me was when I was flipping through, it was a thumbnail. There was a body cam from a cop pulling a woman over. She was screaming because she had a baby in her lap. And then it cuts to the hospital and they're weirded out because they go, that's not her baby. That's not her blood. Boom, boom. That's it. Amy brings it to the show and says, you gotta watch it. So we watched it. Did you do all the reading after about it too?
Mike
Yeah, some.
Amy
Yeah, me too. So it feels weird to talk about something so openly because we never do shows like this.
Gabe
You all did more research after you watched it?
Mike
Yeah. Well, it's such a fascinating story.
Gabe
Well, this is good for me then, because I didn't. So I want to hear what you guys.
Mike
Okay.
Amy
So it's so effed up because there's this woman who is from Texas or Oklahoma, New Boston. It's the. It's the border. So it's constantly in both. Which one is it?
Gabe
I think it's Texas.
Mike
Yeah.
Amy
Okay. So she has this baby. They go to the doctor. They bring in that old doctor, the older guy, to. To look and see if she has.
Mike
Examine her.
Amy
And when he walks out of the room and they have him on camera from body cam going, no, I didn't come to her vagina. That ain't hers.
Mike
Yeah.
He's like, she definitely shows no signs of having a baby.
Amy
How about him having to go down and check?
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
And just seeing nothing came out of her and going, well, this is weird.
Mike
Yeah.
Gabe
And that was. That took a while to get the examination because she was just. Remember the first call was, she does not want to get the examination.
Mike
Right.
Amy
So. And we'll go through the show kind of in order. They're talking with this dude who is her ex boyfriend. Did they ever get married?
Mike
Wade? No.
Amy
And you could tell Wade they were.
Gabe
They never got married. They were engaged.
Amy
I don't know if they were married.
Mike
I don't know that they got married yet, because then she got pregnant. Did they get me? No. Did they get me?
Amy
Did you watch it?
Mike
Oh, I watched it. Yeah.
Amy
They get married, her and Wade?
Mike
I don't think so. Yeah, no. This would have been way more tangled. I think he's lucky they weren't married because he could just like, you know.
Gabe
Okay, good point.
Amy
As soon as Wade showed up on screen, sitting in his house, and he's got a cowboy hat on inside, black One. And he's got a jacket. You know, he went through, like, 10 jackets to find that one.
Mike
And he's like, is it hot in here?
Ashley Akonetti
Yeah, dude.
Amy
You're wearing three layers in a cowboy hat.
Mike
But also, I think he was just so nervous. He's about to publicly show kind of what a idiot he is. Which I. You know, I hate saying that. Poor Wade. But also not poor Wade, because you. You were sleeping next to a woman who was faking pregnant for months, and you never saw her naked or never said, let me touch your stomach.
Amy
I didn't think about to see your naked part anything.
Gabe
They weren't doing anything because it was a fake stomach.
Mike
I get.
Amy
Well, you could have sex and the lights be off.
Ashley Akonetti
Sure.
Mike
But.
Gabe
But you're on a prosthetic.
Mike
They. They weren't. They. He admitted they weren't physically intimate. They weren't anything. But you don't have enough suspicion in your mind to where you're like, huh, all right, that's it. I'm gonna walk in on her peeing, showering.
Amy
I don't do that even now, but.
Mike
Or roll over in the bed and be like, I hear you.
Gabe
You're right.
Amy
You know why I thought the no sexting or maybe the sex thing was happening. There are stories of people who faked being a sex. Like, if it's a dude and they're faking as a woman.
Mike
Wait, what?
Amy
And they're having sex with the person, but they're always just doing mouth stuff or what? And so the person never actually thinks anything about it. So there are ways to hide that, because the lights are off. So I didn't think about that because I thought maybe she was just doing other stuff to him. And also, when you're pregnant, you just don't want to do that.
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
For a lot of the pregnancy.
Gabe
I mean, he even told his buddy that they hadn't done it in how.
Mike
Four months.
Months.
Amy
But that, to me, didn't feel crazy. If she's pregnant and feeling sick and
Mike
not feeling good, I get that's why.
Amy
To me, that never stuck out when you're saying that it does. But that's why to me, if she's pregnant, I never thought much about it because everybody's pregnancy affects them differently. Sometimes you just. You don't want to do anything.
Mike
Right.
Amy
You can be so sick. My wife was so sick for months that there's no way.
Mike
But I guarantee you, there's a time, even in those months, even when she's sick, where, like, you're married, you walk around your house. Like you.
Amy
Yeah.
Mike
If you have a sports. Like, you don't have to be fully naked, but you know, she has a real belly.
Amy
I hear you on that part. I just didn't think anything about the sex part because I thought he would just think, well, she doesn't. Pregnant. That's an easy excuse.
Mike
Yeah.
Gabe
You know what I thought is feeling the stomach. Like, he never felt the stomach.
Amy
No, like, well, but she had a
Mike
thing where it would kick.
Amy
There was a video that she showed because she was doing all the social media of her going, look how pregnant I am. Which, by the way, she had bought a fake stomach online. Yes.
Mike
Okay. But also, can we back up to. To the part where this woman. There's this girl. Taylor, right, Taylor.
Gabe
Taylor.
Mike
She had a full hysterectomy.
Amy
Prior.
Mike
Prior. So she's publicly putting online, like, how delusional do you have to be to know that there are doctors, nurses, and friends in your town, in your town that know you have a hysterectomy and you have the audacity to post online that you're pregnant?
Amy
The doctors were in though, and they were saying, we knew she wasn't pregnant. They have hipaa, but they can't say anything. But did she disclose to her friends that she had had a hysterectomy?
Mike
Yes, but there I think that at that point they just wanted nothing to do with her. So. Or at least this is. The story I told myself is like, if I'm a friend that knew, it's like, do I really want to stir this pot? Like, she's crazy. I finally have her out of my life. I want to keep her out of my life because she had a friend that was pregnant. Like, and this friend is in the documentary. And she started acting really weird towards that pregnant friend. And that's where the friend was like, red flags, red flags. Like, I don't want anything to do with you. So later she pops up online. You already got her out of your life. She's pretending to be pregnant. You probably are just like, whatever.
Amy
I didn't think much about her having the hysterectomy and her friends knowing because in my mind, I guess I assumed that she didn't share that with everybody because the doctors were ongoing. We knew, but we couldn't say anything. And maybe the other people did, but they never put that in the documentary. Those people that knew her, they were never saying, yeah, we knew she had a hysterectomy. They were just.
Mike
I thought the best friend did.
Gabe
Just one friend. Yeah, one Friend that she didn't talk to.
Mike
But even that one friend, there's another friend in the friend group. And, you know, probably in their close circle. They probably are like, God, this is crazy. She has a hysterectomy.
Gabe
But they know her already as.
Mike
But it's not. It's not a. It wasn't a big, obviously widely known story or her situation until
Reese Witherspoon
later, till
Mike
the crime was committed. So no crime had been committed. So probably in the small town, they gossiped like, there's no way she's really pregnant. But it's like, doesn't that get back
Amy
to Wade, the social media of her having that belly and it kicking?
Mike
Yeah.
Amy
And she posted, oh, look at it kick. And it's doing that. Is that some sort of belly with a motor in it?
Mike
I think so.
Amy
Like, they even do that with those fake bellies.
Gabe
Yeah, but. And what would that be used for other than this scenario? A movie.
Amy
Oh, yeah, Probably.
Gabe
Like just a movie prop.
Mike
Probably.
Amy
Or a joke costume. Yeah, Weird joke. Like a. Yeah. Costume for a movie or play or a.
Gabe
Like a. Cuz it was almost like watching a magic trick. I was like, how is she doing that?
Amy
She's like, look at it. It's kicking.
Mike
She was so used to lying her whole life about so many things that. You know, the. The. The part that got me, too, about Wade is like, how she had these people who have multiple phones or they're texting people as multiple characters in the story and how they keep up with it because there's other stories, not just her, where they.
Ashley Akonetti
People.
Mike
It fascinates me how they're able to keep up with five different characters, different cell phone numbers, different texts, and they even text while you're with the person. And they would never think that it's you, and you're. You have all these identities. Like, how do they keep it all straight? It's almost like they're crazy but brilliant.
Amy
I was thinking about that, and I wondered how I would do it. And I figured that by all the phones, I would just look at what I had said before and remind myself what character I was then. Because every phone was different.
Mike
Okay.
Amy
If I had to do it from one phone and go to different accounts, you know, people get caught on burner accounts. Yeah. Because they don't switch back over to their real account. I'd probably fall that way.
Mike
Okay.
Amy
But, yeah, you're right. She had all these identities that she was faking.
Martha
Her mom.
Mike
She was inheriting millions of dollars, which, honestly, I think that's what Wade wanted. Like Wade wanted his ranch.
Gabe
Like, Ray Wade was spending money.
Mike
Wade was like, okay, I'm gonna get a new truck. But then what about the time where she bought Wade's mom a car and dropped it off and was literally like, I bought you a car on Facebook. However. What? Like a week later or however long Wade's mom is, like, yeah, they showed up, and we're like, this car hasn't been paid for. Like, how do you think you're gonna get? Like, why? What?
Amy
I think it's all, you want it instant. You don't think about what's going to happen in the future. Otherwise, you wouldn't really do any of this.
Gabe
You're right. You're right.
Mike
Because it's fantasy.
Gabe
Because when you get to that point where you're like, oh, my gosh, now I have to keep this up, you go to these measures of, like, I have to do anything I can to make this somewhat not be a lie.
Amy
Well, they didn't talk about a lot. And the thing that Caitlin and I kept talking about was. And they brought her up a little bit, but she had already had kids. A kid.
Mike
They were at the gender reveal, walking
Amy
out with the donkey or the pony or whatever with a red bow on its neck. But they didn't really focus on that. Wade had said in one of those interviews, yeah, and she'd had kids before. So I believed her. When she was talking about what we needed because she was pregnant. I was like, wait, she already has kids and she's doing all this and she already had. Like, why are they not being taken care of? And so then I wonder, like, who has her kids?
Gabe
Did they not say who has her kids?
Amy
I don't think it was.
Mike
They were. Obviously, she had them at. She had split custody at some point
Gabe
because her real mom eventually came out. Right? Or my making that up.
Mike
Yeah, she did. And I think she confirmed, like, none of that because she pinned a lot of things on her mom, and her mom was like, no, that's not me.
Amy
Because her.
Mike
Didn't her mom have her kids?
Gabe
That's what I'm thinking.
Mike
She was worried about if she said something about what she was doing that she would unleash, like, havoc on her, get the kids taken away from.
Gabe
That's it.
Amy
That's good leverage. Like, that's psychotic.
Gabe
Yep.
Amy
Strong leverage.
Mike
So.
Amy
So, okay, she. They go backward first. So at the very beginning of the show, they're like, oh, the baby. They go to the hospital doctor. Like, there's nothing came out of that vagina. And so then they start to talk to folks and friends and she's pregnant. Yeah. I couldn't. It was one of those. I couldn't predict it. As I was going. I had a couple ideas, but so it's rolling through and you're starting to see. And then you're starting to pin. I pin it on everybody. At one point during the show, I thought everybody did something.
Gabe
See, that to me, is a good documentary when you start thinking that anyone can do something.
Amy
And then she wants to be a photographer, and so she just creates her own little photography company. But you know what was interesting? They had that other boss of hers in. She was sitting behind her desk, I forget what. Kind of like a staffing company or something. And she had came and only worked there for a bit. But then in her time there, she started impersonating that boss.
Mike
Yes.
Amy
Like using her.
Mike
But she seemed like she really liked her. Like everyone. Coworker. Yeah. They're like. Yeah. I mean, they would. I guess she had lost a child. They bonded over something. So then she felt like this connection to her. And. Yeah. After she got fired and she left, they were going through stuff. She's like, wait a second, you were impersonating me.
Amy
So that's happening. You're starting to see a lot of the. You're starting to see a lot of people start to dislike her. Slowly they're unraveling.
Mike
Yeah.
Amy
How people started to distrust.
Gabe
Because when they introduced characters, everyone's like, we loved her.
Amy
Life of the party.
Gabe
She was the best.
Amy
She was pretty. She. And then they hit you with. Well, when she was younger, she was extremely overweight and she had the sleeve, I believe is what it was.
Mike
The gastric.
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
So you started to see. Okay, now she's dealing with something emotionally where she doesn't want to be whatever version she was. And now she's starting to do anything and everything she possibly can do to not be what she wasn't proud of, which was what she was. And so they would talk about how pretty she was and her Instagram and how fun she was. But everybody started to get a little sour on her. Her friends that we're talking about her nicely beginning documentary. Not so nice. And Wade. Good guy, by the way.
Gabe
Good guy.
Amy
Maybe not the smartest.
Mike
Yeah.
Amy
But good guy. He's just.
Mike
From what we can tell, he's just a simple dude. Yeah.
Amy
Wanted a ranch. Have. There's questions about the ranch. While they were faking all the money that. That she was getting from her grandparents.
Gabe
Yeah. Oil. Oil money.
Amy
Then when they were buying the Ranch. He was like, are there. How about the real hogs on it?
Mike
You know, the real estate people that were selling the ranch, they're like, yeah. They would always get contacted after business hours and, like, all these weird things.
Amy
Voice. A voice changer. To be your uncle. Like her Uncle Tuxi or what?
Mike
I don't even know what his name was or something.
Gabe
That's crazy.
Amy
And so obviously they didn't have the money. They faked the money for it. They. She faked the money for everything, dude.
Gabe
But they spent. Yeah, they spent a lot of money. He was buying, you know, what do they call side by sides and, I mean, new trucks.
Amy
It was all the family money they were getting.
Gabe
Gosh, that's crazy.
Amy
That Christmas video that somebody took, because she was, like, holding court with all the family around her, and she's like, this is where we're moving. We're buying this ranch. Like that. That was her drug right there.
Mike
Yeah. And there was this one guy in that scene. I don't know, maybe a cousin. Did y' all notice him? He's sitting on the couch, and he's sort of like, oh, rolling his eyes, like, what? Okay. We're listening to the story about Pecan bend for 30 minutes, and everyone's like.
Amy
Like, we're changing the name from Pecan Point to Pecan Bend.
Mike
Yeah. So I think he was just like, yeah, okay, we're happy for y'.
Matt Altmix
All.
Mike
But it's like, okay, let's move on. You could tell he either was just annoyed or he knew, like, something just doesn't seem right.
Amy
So you may have helped me with the timeline here. She had started her own photography business, but when they called that photographer who did Western photography, when they did those pictures, did that inspire her to do more photography and that's how it went, or did she already go and do the photography at that wedding for that one girl?
Mike
I think she'd already done the.
Yeah, that was photography.
Amy
So then why did she called. How did the other girl get involved in the other photograph? Because she spent time with them.
Mike
Yeah. I think because she wanted her own
Gabe
pictures taken, and the other photographer was saying that something was weird about that.
Amy
Yeah, that's what I'm wondering. Like, how did that real photographer get in the documentary just because she spent time with them?
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
Something was wrong.
Gabe
And she noticed something during the photo session of. Just, like, it's. It's just weird. Like.
Mike
But she also went home and told her husband, like, how cool they were.
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
Yeah.
Mike
I don't think she noticed it.
I Think that it was just part of like, for me, I took that as painting more of the picture of like just how far she was going to take this pregnancy thing. Doing a full blown maternity shoot on horses and like, okay, got this big belly, like her belly in the maternity. Maternity pictures. Like that was that prosthetic. Like, it looked. She was very pregnant at that point.
Amy
How crazy. When they go to the Internet shot of her looking to find a sonogram and the different sonograms to buy off the Internet.
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
And search and the websites are funny. Prank. That's why you buy those. And it was all those sonograms that you could.
Mike
Which that's where a lot of people are making the connection. Which all aren't listening to. But Love Trapped is the other podcast that involves faking a pregnancy and sonograms. And it's kind of crazy. What. What women or men will. The links they will go to make something convincing like altering using. Like what. What's the. That where you can hire assistants. Like Fiverr. Have you ever heard of Fiverr? Okay. It's. It's where you can just get an assistant to do anything for you. You need photoshopping, you need documents drawn.
Amy
Real assistance. Or is this some sort of prank?
Mike
No, they're like legit. They're like giving you a hand. Like a high five, I think like Fiverr, like, no problem.
Amy
That's gonna help you.
Mike
It's a real. Yes. A real person.
Amy
Like right now I'm like, what?
Mike
That is going to help you? And I'm like thinking like, you get a Fiverr notification in your email from someone that's like, hey, can you doctor this ultrasound for me? Yeah.
Gabe
You start questioning.
Amy
Is that what they did?
Mike
What? Yeah, that's. It's one of the things that.
Amy
Because I knew she ordered from that website.
Mike
Well, I mean, I don't know if it's what she did, but it's a thing where if you don't know how to Photoshop it yourself, like they're outsourcing it.
Gabe
I thought she used an older one, like from her.
Mike
Maybe her other baby.
Gabe
Her other babies. Because the date, the day.
Amy
But then she went. Didn't she go to a website where they showed you all the fake sonograms you could buy? And it's like play a prank. And. And you could buy all from different. Yeah.
Gabe
Different stages of the. Of the. Yeah.
Amy
Because she. Because she got caught with the wrong date on one of them.
Gabe
Correct.
Amy
Which may have been her old one. But I just remember seeing that website that brought up of all the fake sonograms thinking the person that built this site knows that 60 to 70% of these aren't being used for pranks.
Mike
Right. Right.
Amy
But that's how they can actually you
Mike
have to market it.
Amy
Market it as a prank site.
Gabe
But.
Amy
But a lot of people, most people probably are buying them and lying about it.
Gabe
That's crazy.
Amy
And doing scam type situations.
Mike
To your point. Now I get that maybe the if you get a fiverr notification to alter that they could position like I'm trying to prank my family and then you're like oh, okay.
Fun.
Hehe. Ha ha ha.
Amy
The Bobby cast.

And we're back on the bobbycast. So she got a fake belly. She got a fake sonogram. Wade believes they're having a kid. Wade does not love her. Wade is like. He never told her he loved her.
Gabe
No.
Amy
Their whole time.
Mike
No. But he loves the.
Amy
He loves the money and he loves that she's getting all that family money.
Mike
Yeah.
Amy
And she's now. She's now doing photography. And she goes. And she does photography at this wedding of this woman. Girl hires her. And they were talking about just, you know, how magnetic she was. What was her name, the main girl?
Gabe
Taylor. Taylor.
Mike
Taylor's the main.
Amy
How magnetic Taylor was as a person. Because the people at the wedding were saying, yeah, Taylor was in a lot of our selfies. Like, she was like, just part of the group we hired as a photographer, but she was just part of the group. And so that happens. They talk about it and then they go away from it. Because then after that, it's that other photo, the real photographer, and they're talking about things. And then one of the neighbors sees Taylor out, and she's kind of skinny, and she says she didn't even look pregnant to be nine months. But then she went 10 months pregnant. Then she got like 10 and a half months pregnant. The baby was never having the baby.
Gabe
Yes. Which is unheard of.
Amy
She said she was just. Didn't look pregnant. So maybe she just crapped out on wearing the belly.
Mike
Oh, she hadn't ordered it yet.
Gabe
Oh, she hadn't.
Amy
I don't think at some point she had a big belly, though.
Gabe
I felt like she just slipped.
Amy
I feel like she just took it off.
Mike
She took it off that day. Oh.
Amy
Because in the maternity shoot, she had one on. So it's 10. She's 10 and a half months pregnant. She has no baby. She does not look pregnant anymore.
Gabe
So is that when the parents started thinking and the aunt and all the family members of Wade. Wade's family members were like, hey, man. Like, something's not right. Because at one point they come out and be like, dude, you've gotta. You gotta understand, this isn't fake. She's not really pregnant. And he didn't believe it.
Amy
The feels about that time when they started talking about that. The camouflage guy.
Gabe
The camouflage guy. And then I believe his mom or somebody in there.
Mike
Speaking of that friend, I'm glad Wade has him for sure, you know, because he Sort of backed away. He did the right thing. He set a boundary. Like, hey, I'm out. Like, if you're. This is going to be your life. I can't be part of it. But then once everything went down and so many people were likely turning their back on Wade and the family because, like, oh, yeah, this is crazy. That friend showed back up. I was like, that's a good friend. He's like, you know, took him in. Talked about how you embraced him because, yeah, your heart breaks for people going through that. People.
Amy
She sends a text to Wade to say, hey, go meet this guy. Oh, gosh. Three hours away.
Mike
Yeah. She needed Wade gone and busy.
Amy
Yes. From one of our other phones. Hey, we got. We got the dogs. Go get the hogs. So Wade's got his trailer driving up to Oklahoma, I think, to get these hogs. Drives all. Because she's like, I'm going to the hospital because I think I'm gonna have the baby. And Wade's like, I'll go. She goes, no, you need to get
Mike
the hogs first, because too much money.
Yeah.
Amy
Yeah. You're gonna pass up. Yeah.
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
And so Wade's up, and Wade meets the guy, and the guy's like, I didn't text you.
Gabe
Yeah, I didn't. That's not me.
Amy
That's not me. He's like, wait, what. What about this number? That ain't me. And I think that then Wade already knew she was nuts.
Mike
Right.
Amy
He had to know a little bit.
Mike
Yeah. I think that there's some denial when you've invested that much into somebody and you're in a relationship. Like, all the signs can be there, but you've got this veil over you, and you can't. Like, part of you probably wants to see it, but you're in denial because you're like, no, no, no, this can't be true, because then what would that say about me? So you don't want it to be true.
Amy
Yeah.
Mike
So I think he was in denial.
Amy
So they.
Mike
The veil was lifted.
Amy
They show. They show away.
Gabe
Go.
Ashley Akonetti
Ah.
Amy
I guess that's kind of what I knew. So he's driving back, and in this time,
Matt Altmix
crazy.
Amy
The. The woman that was getting married, that she was the photographer for, she goes into. Breaks into her house, Goes into her house, cuts her stomach open, cuts the baby out, umbilical cord and all, and takes off toward the hospital with the baby to then act like she had the baby in the car. The. The girl died.
Mike
Mm.
Amy
And her sister is being interviewed the whole time from the wedding.
Gabe
Her Little sister.
Amy
Yeah. The dark shirt. She had a black shirt on. Right. I never connected the two. I just thought she was someone who was adding texture the whole time, and I think that's probably what they assume most people would do.
Mike
No, but. So Taylor had also gone over there, like, the night before?
Gabe
Yes. She was there the night before to
Mike
hang out and probably, like, assess the situation. What was she gonna. She knew she was gonna come back the next day and take. Cut the baby out, but she went and hung out with him the night before just like, they're all friends and nobody was the wiser. Like, she wasn't acting weird. I don't think anybody was suspicious of anything.
Amy
You wouldn't be?
Gabe
No, she's just Taylor.
Mike
Well, yeah, but if you. I'm thinking the girl that was in
Amy
the selfies at the wedding.
Gabe
Yeah.
Mike
Right. Right. I guess if I know I'm committing that kind of crime the following morning, I'm not acting normal. Like, I'm showing up to hang out to assess, and I'm going to be. There's going to be signs.
Amy
Yeah, but that's because you're rational and you're worried about stuff. Irrational people don't worry about things rational people worry about.
Mike
Right, so that's the where can't. Psychopath.
Gabe
She had Googled how to do a C section, Right?
Mike
Yeah, but there was. And, you know, there was a struggle. I saw, like. I don't know if this is something I saw in the documentary or read after, but that. Like, what? I can't think of her name right now. Reagan.
Amy
Yeah, I think that's it.
Gabe
The victim.
Mike
Yes, she to be. You think you're letting in a friend so you don't have your guard up, and then suddenly your friend starts attacking you, and she put up a fight.
Amy
And were you guys shocked by the blood in the picture they showed?
Gabe
Yes.
Mike
Yes. But Taylor was having to use, like. Yes, she had the knife, but. So she had to use, like, a gender reveal jar or something from a baby shower and, like, knocked her with that jar. And I don't know. Like, I think the scene probably was really chaotic. And then she had to get her to a point where she could keep her still enough. Like, injure her enough to. Where she could keep her still enough to cut the stomach or.
Amy
Could you not kill her? And then the baby's not gonna die.
Mike
Right.
See, but I wondered. Was her plant. I guess she had to kill her.
Amy
You have to kill her.
Mike
Okay. So I was thinking, was there a way to do it?
Amy
But there's Not a great plan because she's going to die. She still left her there, so everyone was going to know.
Mike
That's right. You're right. I wasn't sorry. I don't. I don't think like a murderer like that.
Gabe
And that's good. I'm like, we're glad you told.
Mike
Like, why couldn't she just have cut the baby out and then spared? I don't think you can do that
Gabe
on a kitchen floor without blood loss.
Amy
Just the blood loss.
Mike
Yeah.
Gabe
She's gonna die regardless.
Mike
I know.
Amy
She. The. She gets murdered by the woman that she hired to take pictures at her wedding.
Gabe
Okay. So then she takes the baby.
Mike
Well, but the reason why it's not like she became the photographer of that wedding to end up doing this. It's because she was desperate and had to come up with a plan. And she started thinking, who in my life do I know or who can I come upon that has a baby where I can commit this act? And it just so happened to be that, like, it wasn't, like, part of a big master. Well thought out. It was a very. I'm pretty sure they even show her it's a computer, like, on Facebook, like, trying to be like, who's pregnant? That I know right now because I gotta get a baby.
Amy
The baby died.
Gabe
So what was the play here? Like, to. She knew the baby was gonna die or didn't think the baby would die? I didn't think.
Mike
I didn't think she cared.
Amy
Yeah.
Mike
As long as she had a baby.
Amy
Yeah.
Gabe
So then I don't know if they addressed this, but did she call the cops? Does she get pulled over?
Amy
Pulled over.
Mike
Right.
Amy
But did she call and say, I
Mike
don't know which came first? I couldn't tell. I don't know if y' all could clarify, but I know she was on the phone with 911 saying, I had a baby. Then I don't know if because of that, cops then were like, oh, we're on this highway. Or they saw her driving erratically. Because I know when they pulled her over, she was already on the phone with 91 1.
Gabe
Yeah.
Mike
So I don't know which came first. Was she already on 911 driving erratically? And then also the police are like, oh. Or did the police start to pull her over and she's like, oh, I better call 911 to make this look more legit.
She called 911 right as she was getting pulled over?
Okay. That's the answer. So she was driving erratically. They pulled her over. See she's always thinking.
Amy
She's always thinking, but she's only thinking about right now, current, because if you murder somebody and steal their baby, eventually you're going to jail. Like, there's no long term. Everything she was doing was for the instant gratification of what she needed right in that moment. And that's through the history of this whole show.
Mike
Right?
Gabe
You're right. She's not thinking about the future.
Mike
You're in survival mode. She's thinking, like, okay, what's my next play? But that's like, she's so delusional, but also thinking because, like, I would be like, okay, I'm getting pulled over, and I would just be like, I just delivered this baby. But she's like, well, I better get on 911, because it's gonna be more believable.
Gabe
And every lie was covered by a new lie to. To, you know, stack on top of one another.
Mike
And I don't know if this is the case, but which hospital did she get the hysterectomy at? Is that why she was so insistent on going to a particular hospital? Because she knew she couldn't go to the hospital where she had the hysterectomy? Because I.
Ashley Akonetti
She was.
Mike
She was definitely saying, I need to be taken to this hospital. I need to go to this hospital,
Gabe
which is a little further away. Right.
Mike
But it's. But it had to be, because other people at the other hospital knew, like, they wouldn't even need to do an exam. They'd be like, here's her records.
Gabe
And then she knows, right, that, like, once she gets to the hospital, it's gonna end.
Amy
But that's the thing. She's never thinking about what happens when it's always right now, how do I make it out of this situation?
Mike
I mean, she had the placenta with her, too.
Amy
It's very much a survival mentality always. So it's never three steps from now what's gonna happen. It's how do I get out of this right this second, I'll deal with
Gabe
the next one later, right?
Mike
And I don't think she's thinking. I think once they cop started to really realize, oh, we have a situation is because they got a call about the murder and a woman whose baby was removed from her, and they're like, well, wait a second, we gotta call her hospital.
Amy
The cop was weird when he pulled
Mike
her over with a baby, and there was just a murder with a baby taken. They're like, oh. And then you see the documentary shows the nurse's footage they're like, this is not good.
Amy
I didn't think about the cop, though. Cause if the cop already knew there was a murder when he pulled her
Mike
over, well, I don't know that he knew at that point.
Gabe
Not that cop.
Mike
Not that cop.
Amy
Okay, but that cop was not, mister, I'm going in to help you.
Gabe
He was.
Amy
No, not really. He was like, I can't do anything. We have to call an ambulance.
Gabe
Yeah, because he knew the baby was dead.
Amy
Okay, but all our. Tell me something good we do on our show. The cops, like, in their knuckles, deep, getting the baby out, doing something with the baby, like trying to save a baby. The cop. That cop was not like that when he pulled her over.
Gabe
Good point.
Amy
And I thought that was weird, because then you see the ambulance come up. Because the cops like, ma', am, I can't help you. We're gonna have to get an ambulance here. I believe that's what he said.
Gabe
It seemed like the demeanor of the scene, they were acting as if they believed her. I didn't get the impression that they were just like, oh, she might be lying. Let's just.
Amy
I got the impression that the cop was not jumping in, to which I feel most would, because they are trained for emergency medical. This cop was not like that at all. And I thought it was weird at first. I thought, that's not a good cop. Yeah, that was my thought when he first said that. But there had to have been something known. And again, sometimes these documentaries don't want you to know, so they purposely will leave that out. Mike, what do you think about that?
Mike
Yeah, he did seem kind of weird.
Amy
Like, cold almost.
Mike
Yeah.
Amy
Like, I'm not gonna do anything. We gotta call an ambulance. And they're medically trained police officers are.
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
So that was probably the first. Looking back, we'd probably go, oh, I think that's the first clue that it's crazier than we think.
Gabe
But then when she got to the hot. When the detectives got to the hospital or the police department got to the hospital, the nurses met the. The police outside and said, yeah, she just doesn't want to get examined. And he was like, okay, that's interesting. And then he walks in.
Amy
That all does. Yep, that's true.
Gabe
So I don't know if they'd connected it. The murder, with her being there immediately. I think once they were interviewing her, they got word like, there's a murder.
Amy
If you watch it back, though, you'll be taken aback. And how that cop was not helpful.
Gabe
Yeah.
Mike
Yeah.
Gabe
Oh, I don't Know if I want to watch that back?
Mike
I don't. Yeah, I'm not gonna go watch it
Amy
because I didn't interpret it as what I'm thinking it was now, but now he was so not helpful that I think he was not helpful for a reason. Because again, most cops are trained for emergencies, medical situations. How do we save the baby? He said, I can't help you. We gotta wait for an ambulance.
Mike
I guess if you pull up to her and you see the baby's already dead, you assume maybe she did something,
but now it's a crime scene.
Amy
You still try to save the baby if you're not sure.
Mike
I know that's what I'm thinking, like a little.
Amy
Unless you're 100 sure, you're probably giving that baby CPR.
Gabe
What about a small town cop?
Amy
You're still. I don't know, I. I don't know. I just thinking back, I feel different about it than when I did when I watched it the first time going, that cop's kind of cold. Now. I think there was probably some motivation for that coldness. Let's take a quick pause for a message from our sponsor.

Amy
Welcome back to the Bobbycast.
Gabe
I do remember Mike and refresh my memory, but I do think that they found out that there was a murder with a baby stolen from another from a house when they were interviewing her because they pulled the detective out and
Mike
be like hey, in the hospital room. Right, that's what I was.
Gabe
So they didn't know immediately and then.
Mike
But they knew at the hospital because that's when yeah, they started to be like, oh shoot, this is that.
Gabe
And that's when she's just, I mean her back's against the wall. What do you mean? What do you mean? Of course I had the baby.
Mike
This baby came out of you. Yeah, yeah.
Gabe
What do you mean?
Mike
She said she now fast forward some of the post stuff that I've seen is in prison. She has pitched herself as an in house crime consultant from prison. Like telling, you know, I don't know who you tell, like I guess looking for a way out early. Like you know, if you cooperate and help the police solve other crimes. So she's like, look, I'm a really good liar and manipulator and I can help you. But in that same vein, she also has now said that she was kidnapped by some Gangster.
Amy
Oh, I saw the thing where she was trying like maybe try to get murdered in prison. I think she's done a lot of lies. What's your lie?
Mike
Okay, all of this she didn't do on her. She was forced to do it by this guy in a gang that had kidnapped her at some point and then set up this whole thing of what she had to do. And if she didn't do it.
Gabe
Yeah, I mean, it doesn't surprise me. I mean, someone that lies for their whole life, like it's not going to stop after they get arrested.
Mike
Right.
Amy
There was one too where I think she blamed her cellmate. Cellmate who she didn't. For trying to kill her. And then also what they didn't say in the documentary was she had fake pregnancies before.
Mike
Oh, really? Yeah, I knew she had fake. She had faked other ailments.
Amy
Like, oh, well, they'd said that documentary. She faked cancer. She faked. She just needs, she just wanted attention. Like there's some real deep rooted mental illness. I'm surprised that she did not because that's so crazy. What? What? All that, that happened. Every, every bit of that is so crazy. That's somebody who's clinically insane. You cannot be. That's not evil for the sake of gaining something. That's. You're brain is hurt. You're. You're off, you're off.
Gabe
But, but didn't you just say that it's to make her feel better about things?
Amy
Like, yeah, but you know what? I want to feel better about things. I'm insecure about a lot of things. I don't go and cut a baby out of somebody. I don't fake cancer. I don't. I think there was so much here that I don't feel that her brain is right. I was surprised she didn't get insanity.
Mike
Right. It's like up until that point, it's like, okay, she's the pathological liar. Like, that's one thing to be someone that lies a lot and then it's next to. Now your lies are leading you to that double murder.
Amy
Murder of an adult, murder of a baby. And if you're just a pathological liar, you probably have a limit. You hit where you're going. I need to lie better, but not. I need to murder to cover my lie. I was so surprised she didn't get insanity.
Gabe
Did you guys think it would get there? Like, did you think she would kill.
Amy
Nope.
Gabe
Try to rip a baby out of a mom.
Amy
I started to think she was going to Take the baby out of her friend or. No, kidnap the baby.
Gabe
That's what I thought.
Amy
Not, not. Not Stab. I never thought. Stab and rip the baby out of someone. I thought she might kidnap a baby from somebody, including her friend they were talking about earlier. I thought that's what the documentary was pointing us towards.
Mike
Yeah. Because at one point they were like, we're on high alert.
Gabe
They said that. Where, Mike? In the hospital.
Amy
At one of the hospitals.
Mike
They were like, yeah.
Amy
Oh, because she might come steal a baby.
Matt Altmix
Yeah.
Mike
They were like, we're on high alert for her.
Amy
That's right.
Mike
I wouldn't be surprised if it was her.
Amy
So I never thought it was. Especially because it wasn't a throwaway. It was more of texture to her life when she was a photographer for a wedding. That was just kind of a throwaway during it. Just a little texture piece, like showing
Mike
what she does for a living and
Amy
how people liked her. Yeah, yeah, yeah. How easily people were drawn to her.
Mike
I mean, those people have to. I mean, oh, my gosh, that poor family.
Gabe
I can't.
Mike
Her husband.
Gabe
I can tell you, her husband didn't get the interview. He didn't interview. Right. Like, he was mia, which is great.
Amy
The husband of the victim.
Gabe
But I can't believe Homer or. Yeah, something like that. But I can't believe the victim's mom talked so much about that. Like, that would be so hard if that was my daughter.
Ashley Akonetti
Very.
Amy
I think what you probably do in that situation is go, if I don't tell the version of the story that I have, it's never going to be told. And that's why you do it. Not for any sort of. I want to be on tv.
Gabe
But I don't think her side of the story needs any explanation.
Mike
No, I think it highlighted who. Who her daughter was as a person and her sweet spirit.
Amy
And you want people to know that person as a person, not just a victim.
Gabe
Interesting.
Amy
And that's why her sister, or sister, I think her sister, if she saw her now, she just stab her and kill her dead right now for sure. Just she's pissed and she's like, you know, we're taught to forgive. What did she say? But, like, you can ask for forgiveness before you die, but I'll never forgive you. You got to get that from Jesus. Something to that.
Mike
Like, hell wouldn't even be good enough for her.
Gabe
Yeah, that's what she said.
Amy
She said, I talked to my preacher and he's like, well, you don't have to forgive. You know, if she wants forgiveness, it's through Jesus. It doesn't have to be through you. Something like that. That is a messed up show, though.
Gabe
I didn't think it'd get that bad.
Amy
I didn't think it would get that bad either. And I blame Amy.
Mike
I'm sorry.
Amy
It was a really well put together documentary because I never pointed and go, I bet this is it.
Gabe
Nope, never. And Amy, when you said it was the craziest documentary you'd ever seen.
Amy
It's the craziest.
Gabe
I want to apologize. I didn't think that, like, there's no way. Like, there's no way it could be that crazy. But I finished that documentary and said the same thing you said. That's the craziest thing I've ever seen.
Amy
Mike, anything we've left out?
Mike
No, I was just reading more about some of the things they left out about her.
Amy
Yeah? What do you have?
Mike
She had, like, psychotic issues before that they didn't really address in the documentary.
Amy
Do they specifically say in that she
Mike
had had, like, treatment for psychiatric issues, had some diagnosis.
Gabe
You're right, man. The fact that insanity was never a
Mike
thing, it's pretty surprising if I was that family, though. I don't wonder.
Gabe
No, you definitely don't.
Mike
I don't.
Martha
But her.
Amy
Her brain was broken. She wasn't selfishly pursuing a better life. Her brain was so broken that I think she believed. She started to believe a lot of the stuff that she was also lying about.
Gabe
You think so?
Amy
I do.
Gabe
You don't think it was just to get her out of whatever lie she told before?
Amy
I think that's. I do think that's a part of it, too. But there's a difference in somebody who's just a pathological liar that's doing it for just personal monetary gain. Anna Delvey. Right. I don't think her brain was broken. I think she saw an easy way to get something really cool and she could manipulate.
Mike
Well, I mean, some people have that gift.
Amy
I feel like this girl is clinically insane because you don't murder and rip a baby out of somebody. But now she's in prison, she's on death row. Youngest person on death row in Texas.
Matt Altmix
Yep.
Gabe
You think it's. Well, obviously it's pretty hard for her to, like, just say, admit she lied about anything her whole life.
Amy
I wonder if she does that.
Gabe
Probably.
Amy
I wonder if she does admit now any lies at all. I didn't see any of that.
Gabe
There's no way that.
Mike
But when you're that delusional, I wonder if she's, like, Wait, what? I did that.
Amy
Some of that. You lie so much you start to think it's true.
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
Anything else you see up there, Mike, that we didn't talk about?
Mike
No.
Amy
It was a very compelling, it's weird to say entertaining, but I was entertained by it and then I just felt weird after it. But it was a really well put together documentary that I was surprised I didn't know the story because that's so effed up and you would have thought that had been a bigger news story.
Gabe
When did that happen, Amy?
Mike
2021.
Amy
So dancing with COVID time.
Gabe
Yeah.
Amy
And close to us.
Gabe
Yeah. Not far at all, dude. I drive through. I mean, we don't drive through New New Boston when we go to Texas, but I see the sign exit here for New Boston.
Amy
It's not like it's in Olympia, Washington.
Gabe
No.
Amy
Far regionally from us where we would. If it's a big, big enough story, we get it. But that's almost like in our area especially we're all from Texas and Arkansas and Caitlyn's from Oklahoma. Like none of that stuff ever came over to us.
Mike
So.
Amy
Any final thoughts?
Mike
I just probably spend a little too much time thinking about Wade.
Amy
Yeah.
Mike
I mean, I grieve for the other family, but he obviously I grieve for that family. Like that's horrible. But I just like when they show him at the end kind of feeding his animals and he's walking by himself. I just.
Amy
And I think it was Wade's mom maybe or someone else. Like Wade's always going to be known as the guy that was with the girl who murdered the woman and stole the baby out of the woman. I. I feel bad for Wade.
Mike
Yeah. It's like a weird. I guess the problem, the reason why I focus on that, it's obvious to me I feel bad for the victim's family. Like my heart breaks for them. That is a no brainer. I'm a little perplexed. Perplexed at my feelings I have about Wade.
Amy
Me too. Because I'm like, how did you not know? Some or any.
Mike
But I feel for him. And I'm like, that feels weird because I understand why I feel for the other people. I don't quite know why I feel for Wade.
Gabe
The fact that someone like her was out there makes me wonder if the
Mike
next person you hire for an event
Amy
when it says that in the documentary, she goes, I can't even hire a photographer. She's crying at the end of it. She's like, I don't want to hire a photographer for my own wedding because of what happened there.
Mike
Yeah.
Gabe
And like, you meet new friends all the time and you're just like, now, like, I wonder what kind of person this is.
Mike
What.
Amy
What if I'm not even left handed? Oh, it's been a lie. You never know.
Mike
Or like, you know, you start. I mean, y' all aren't dating, but like, I, I just makes you think, like, who, who, who, who?
Gabe
Yeah, you don't know when. You don't know when you go on
Mike
a date with somebody.
Martha
Yeah.
Ashley Akonetti
Yay.
Amy
If you listen to this, you probably watched it. So you know, if you listen to this or watch this and you haven't watched it, well, now you know.
Mike
Now you know you don't have to watch it.
Amy
Okay, that's our spoiler. What are you going?
Mike

Honestly. No one wants to think about hiv, but there are things that everyone can do to help prevent it. Things like prep. PREP stands for pre exposure prophylaxis, and it means routinely taking prescription medicine before you're exposed to HIV to help reduce your chances of getting it. Prep can be about 99% effective when taken as prescribed. It doesn't protect against other STIs, though, so be sure to use condoms and other healthy sex practices. Ask a healthcare provider about all your prevention Options and visit findoutaboutprep.com to learn more.
