We're going to talk about Blue Dot fever a little bit. We're going to talk about nepotism in art, which I think is where we'll start because it's been a really weird week. We had Stella Lefty on this show on Tuesday. So if you go back, if you're watching on Netflix, go back a couple episodes if you're listening. Same thing. And Stella Lefty is an artist that she's in her young 20s. She has a song called Boston that is a top three Billboard Hot 100 song right now, meaning all charts, not just country, but all Charts. The kind of amazing thing right now about that is you have three country songs. They're at the top of that all genre chart. You have Taylor with the song from Toy Story 5, which is a country song. I knew it. I knew you. That may even be number two. But Ella Langley and then Boston. So we had Stella Lefty on, and I thought she was extremely nice. So much fun. We did an hour and 15 minutes. I even told her, hey, I don't know what you're going to be like. And it was one of those where I didn't know the artist at all and hadn't heard much about them, so you just never know. And also, she's young, and a lot of these young artists don't have a lot of life to have lived to have these stories. And so I posted the clips, and it was great, except for everybody was so hateful about the fact that her dad is a billionaire Now. I'm going to bring Eddie in here. Eddie, good to see you.

I'm also a billionaire.

That's why you brought me on.

I brought you in at your intricate knowledge of being a billionaire. So you know her dad's a billionaire.

Yeah, he founded Groupon.

And I found that out later because, yeah, every time I saw a clip of hers, guess what? There was someone being like, look at. She's the daughter of so and so. I'm like, okay, whatever.

[Mike D]

So I spent a little time with this. And I'm not someone to defend rich people. I really dislike rich people, just generally speaking, which isn't really fair because now I kind of am rich, but I didn't grow up with any money at all. So I always felt resentful towards rich people. But what I'm about to do is actually talk about nepotism in art and what is and what isn't. Because just because you have a rich parent, that's not nepotism. Now, there are advantages that you can have to being rich, but there are many artists in Nashville right now that have wildly rich parents that cannot get a hit.

[Eddie]

Correct.

[Mike D]

You can't buy a hit. You can pay great producers. You can pay money to get people in a room, a songwriting room. You can pay for a lot of things, but you can't pay for a hit because that means people have to connect with it. You can't pay for people to like people.

[Eddie]

Correct. Likeability. You can't pay for that.

[Mike D]

And so there are two that I think of now, and I think one a little more than the other. But Stella Lefty is Not nepotism. Her dad is in business and finance. Is she the daughter of somebody rich? Yes, absolutely. No doubt about her. Dad's a billionaire. However, he can have all the connections in the world, but he can't make her pop. He can give her a decent shot to know the right people, to get in the right rooms. I mean, look at Taylor's dad. Taylor's dad basically funded her early career in order to get her started. Like Taylor Swift was the daughter of a rich person.

[Eddie]

Was he rich?

[Ad Voice/Announcer]

Yeah.

[Eddie]

Okay. I didn't realize that.

[Mike D]

Yeah, they had money.

[Eddie]

Okay.

[Mike D]

You ever see that?

[Eddie]

Well, yeah, but I mean, early on, I mean, didn't they all move to Nashville?

[Mike D]

They all moved here.

[Eddie]

And he still works to support her journey.

[Mike D]

And my point is, you can be rich, you can be poor. If you don't have work ethic, you don't have tenacity, you don't have Eye of the Tiger, you don't have creativity, you don't have all that, it's not going to work for you. There are multiple artists. I know now there are a couple whose parents have hundreds of millions of dollars, even billions of dollars that cannot get a hit. And they have used every connection possible. So I would like to say Stella Lefty success is not that of nepotism. I was surprised she went to Tulane. I'll be honest with you.

[Eddie]

You thought she'd go to a more expensive college?

[Mike D]

Yeah, or like a really famous music school. Or. You know, we had Vanessa Carlton in and she.

[Eddie]

Where'd she go to Berkeley?

[Mike D]

I think so.

Man, so many of those good musicians

[Mike D]

and you gotta be really good or really rich or sometimes it's both. Because you can only get so good if you have the resources as a kid to get the right lessons with the right person. My only point to start this is people were being way too rude to Stella Lefty one, she also can't really change who she was born to.

[Eddie]

Yeah. Does it make a difference to start a career when you have money? I mean, to me, it does give you a kickstart above everyone else. When you can afford to pay for a producer, pay for a record to

[Mike D]

be made, I would say it's more than that. You can afford to have the time to do it. So it's way more than even getting in the right rooms and paying for producers. I would say mostly there's no middle class with artists who move to Nashville. It's either people that come here poor and they got to work their face off working three jobs, but again, they have such an anger and a passion and a love and nothing's going to stop them. And they're waiting tables and they're babysitting and while they're also doing their music. That's the kind of person that chases a creative vocation and the person that has a ton of money because they get to do whatever they want. And they have all the time and resources to have great teachers as a kid, to be able to move here and live somewhere comfortably, to not be able to work, to just do their music, to go and play shows. Because when you're playing shows early on, you're making 50 bucks a night, if that.

[Eddie]

And you have another job, a full time job, you don't have to do.

[Mike D]

If you're rich, you come for money. You don't have to worry about money. You can just take your 50 bucks and play your shows.

[Eddie]

And I think that's where a lot of the, to use your term, lower class musician status get a little upset with the Nepo babies. And you're right in this case. She's not a Nepo baby.

She's not a Nepo baby.

She's a rich dad.

[Mike D]

It's not a Nepo is somebody that's in the industry or Bob Dylan.

Industry.

Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan's son. Nepo baby.

And we can talk about. I have a whole list of Nepo babies.

And I have another Nepo baby that I'm a fan of. And like, people try to do this with her too.

And also, he is. Was wildly creative a little bit. That gene's just gonna get passed down to the kid too. I don't want to be sticking up for rich people. This is not something I'm good at. But I felt like the hate towards her was unfair.

So I have people that you could say have used nepotism to their advantage. Number one, Dakota Johnson. Now, this isn't all music. Some music, some's acting big time. Dakota Johnson, she's the kids of Don

Johnson and Melanie Griffin. No.

Yeah, I know, you're right.

Is that right? I thought she was married to Antonio Banderas.

[Mike D]

That's not her dad.

Right. Don Johnson is.

But those are the parents. Antonio and Don Johnson weren't together.

But I think there's a point, too, where, sure, nepotism can play a part, but it can only get you so far. Like, we could watch the screen and go, that dude sucks. Or that dude is awesome. I feel like Jack Quaid's a really good actor.

He is a good actor. And you know what? You can't. I think that, like, movie producers also wait for them, you know? Like, I mean, Dennis Quaid's awesome. Meg Ryan was a huge star. Their kid has to have some talent. So I'm sure they look out for them. Like, are they gonna pursue acting? Cause I'd like to see what they're all about.

No, I think they go, I know their mom and dad. I'm gonna give them a shot in an audition. That's where the nepotism gets annoying, is because people are getting advantages because of the relationships of their parents within the industry that other people don't get because they don't know them. Yeah, it's relationships. Cause nepotism isn't always about money. It just so happens a lot of rich people are famous or rich.

Connections.

Yeah, but it's connections.

This is the Bobbycast. Let's talk about Blue Dot fever for a second. Something we've talked about on the show. Basically it just means people aren't selling to me tickets and it's happening all over. It's for a couple reasons. Mostly it's that tickets are way too expensive. That's it. I saw a chart of a ludicrous show. It was ludicrous. Big X Plug and some others I think. And this was an arena. It looked like 40 tickets were sold. Oh, it was the bluest a blue dot that I've ever seen.

So that sucked.

I saw Kacey Musgraves canceled a couple shows and they were the second shows on her tour. Meaning she did Two in a city. And she had to peel some back.

And they're not saying that's what it is, but they're not not saying that's what it is. But I kind of want to just say everybody's struggling selling tickets. Unless you're Morgan Wallen or Luke Combs or Zach Bryan. And I'm not just talking about country music. Taylor Swift.

Taylor Swift's a good one.

That are doing these football stadiums. It's really hard to sell a ticket. Yeah, everybody's out hustling. Tickets have gotten so expensive. And not just the tickets, the fees. And at times, these promoters have it all wrapped in as far as ticket prices. And then don't get me started on a dynamic ticket.

Dynamic ticket pricing.

[Mike D]

But think about that with Blue Dot, is that doesn't come into effect a lot because if tickets aren't selling, prices don't go up. Because the dynamic part is if everything sells, it's like buying a flight. If the plane's almost empty, those last few seats are pretty expensive.

So what's up with the scalpers? Are the scalpers not even buying?

The economy's bad for everybody, buddy.

Just generally speaking. And maybe we're just comparing it to when we were younger, but this is a lot for a ticket. However, it's not for a massive act. And he's playing arenas. And what Garth does that I love is that he'll just announce one show, you know, it's gonna sell out in seconds, and then he'll go second show

and everyone gets a sale, and then

[Mike D]

it sells out in seconds. Third show.

[Eddie]

Yeah.

[Mike D]

And he only now does one city

[Eddie]

at a time, even though he probably planned three nights for sure.

[Mike D]

But again, only one city at a time, too. It's not a full. Here's every city we're doing. I love how Garth does that, and I like that all the tickets are one price. I don't think they're. The fees are on there. But a lot of these promoters, I should say, I don't think that there are fees added to that. I think that's all in. A lot of these promoters, though, they own the parking, they own the merch.

Yeah.

So they own the ticket price. They have it all.

Yeah.

So they can kind of dictate what everybody's paying. But I think this Blue Dot fever is mostly because people are exhausted of expensive concerts.

I mean, it's just a weird time right now with people and their money. Like, I know that even in my family, we have to think twice sometimes, talk about it three, four times before we even think about going to go see the Odyssey at imax. Like, dude, do we want to pay that much to go see a movie in a movie theater?

You do have Swiss Family Robinson for a family, though. Do you get the reference?

[Eddie]

No, but I have lots of kids.

Okay, let me do a different reference. You do have Johnny Kate plus eight.

[Eddie]

Yes, I got that one. Yeah, dude, that's us. And we have to think about it. A good example was Bruno Mars coming to Nashville, right?

Football stadium, by the way.

Football stadium. And the whole family wants to go. Even my wife's like, hey, everybody wants to go. Did you go? No. We looked at prices. We're like, there's just no way that we can do that. Six of us going to a concert.

You would think, too, with the seating in a football stadium, there would be some seats that would be really cheap,

[Eddie]

but there were not really. Yeah.

That's crazy.

[Eddie]

Yeah. And it's just that time, and I feel for artists that are trying to, you know, make money right now, it's a weird time.

[Mike D]

Post Malone and Jelly Roll had to cut a lot of those early shows because they weren't selling as well as they had hoped they would. And then there are shows, and I had heard that it was Post Malone and Jelly Roll, but I don't know this for sure. They have a thing called papering, where if shows are selling well enough to not cancel, but they're not selling so much that it doesn't look weird. They'll just start giving out tons and tons of tickets to get people there. So then it's still selling a little, and there'll still be a lot of people there because they're giving out the free tickets.

[Eddie]

That's my theory. With the NFL games overseas, you need

[Mike D]

to pay for them.

[Eddie]

They start giving tickets out all over town, all over London.

[Mike D]

I think it'd be kind of fun if. Yeah, you're probably right, though.

[Eddie]

I don't know. It just feels like, wow, that's a lot of football fans in London. But are there really a lot of football fans in London?

[Mike D]

I feel like they just pass out jerseys, though, outside the stadium because they're wearing every team's jersey. Like the Vikings. They ain't playing right. Why these people wearing Vikings jerseys? Megan Maroney had to end a show earlier this week. Three songs in.

[Eddie]

Oh, three songs in.

[Mike D]

So she was playing in Denver. She got three songs in. She told the crowd she could not give them the show they deserve. She posted on her Instagram hours later apologizing, rescheduled the date. Which is what's nice about it, is it's pretty close. Sometimes they do this and they can't get back in the venue. So sometimes it's a year out. But the reschedule dates August 27th. She wrote, this was the hardest decision I ever had to make. I'm quite literally bawling my eyes out in the dressing room and. And it hurts me so much to disappoint you all. I've never had to do this, and I'm truly so sorry. It was tough to watch because there's that decision, and I've had to do it. When doing standup, where you're going, one can I get through a whole show, but can also get through a whole show. And the people out there don't think that they wasted all their money and you don't want to cancel because they just got babysitters. They just sometimes drove in for two, three hours. Sometimes they got a hotel room. And if you do have to reschedule, they just lost that money. Yeah, and then you lost the money because you had to get there. You have to pay for all your travel to get there. And then you have to weigh it. And I think she probably weighed it, thought she could do it, got out there. And I'll say this. I tipped the old hat to her. Is this a hat tip? I don't know how to hat tip account that goes perfect that she got a few songs in and didn't just go. Let's just fight through it and count this as a check mark. Show that she said, we'll come back because she lost money doing that.

[Eddie]

Dude, it is so unfair to just. Just try to make it healthy with every single show. I mean, how many shows do they play a year? They play so many shows, and you have that one show where you're, man, I'm just not feeling good, and you have no choice in the matter. Your voice just isn't there. And I love that she tried to do it. She tried to do three songs and tried to, you know, fight it out, but what can you do? It's so not fair. And it's unfortunate for everyone involved.

Why it was so unselfish of her is that she could have canceled the show right before she could have gone.

[Eddie]

Yeah.

[Mike D]

And everybody would have gone home and people would have lost the money. Like we talked about, babysitter, hotels, etc. She thought, maybe I can pull it off. She tried. And it's the same thing. Had she canceled. They're still going to get to come another show. And they got to watch three songs and watch her. Like, that's better than nothing.

[Eddie]

They got to see her at least.

[Mike D]

And it's not better than nothing. As if that's all they got. They're gonna get another show. And you just saw that she wanted to try to make it work.

[Eddie]

Do people get their refund, like, if they decide they can't make it when she comes back around? Can you just get a full refund for that show?

[Mike D]

It depends. It'd be nice if they all were like that. So some artists will release refunds. That's really the kind of integrity thing to do. Some will go refund at point of purchase. So you go to wherever you bought it, you get your refund. Some just go, we're going to issue tickets for a later date, which means they're going to. All the money stays with them.

[Eddie]

Yeah.

[Mike D]

And they're just going to give you tickets for a different date. Then you figure it out. You can sell the tickets or not,

[Eddie]

you can go wherever.

[Mike D]

Some will do either, which is nice. Okay, get your tickets. But if you can't come, get a refund and we'll resell those tickets, man.

I remember there was a show we did in El Paso, remember? And I was having some stomach issues, and I was like, I don't know if we should do this. But then we went out, and then I had to go to the bathroom mid show, and. And I told you, but we didn't tell the rest of the band. And then I was like, dude, don't tell anyone, but I'm gonna go use the bathroom. So you kept. You guys kept playing. And then somewhere in the middle, when I was in the bathroom, I heard you saying, guys, you know where Eddie is? He's in the bathroom pooping.

Because if you just like someone and they're out there a lot, that's just someone being out there a lot. Yeah, I guess I'm not annoyed by him. But also, you're a Spurs fan, and I think that affected how you feel about him because he's a Knicks fan.

And she said there is this old doctor's drawing of a skeleton that they used back in the 1800s at this store. And the paper is weathered and old. They've tried to preserve it.

She said. But I had them put it aside if you go look at it and if you should buy it for the studio. And so it's a six foot, like, skeleton drawing, but it's from the 1800s.

That's really cool, huh? It's really, really cool.

We haven't done the interview yet, but he's coming up. And I said, you want to go to a train? And she goes, I don't know any of their songs. My wife's 12 years younger than I am. And I said, yeah, she knows her song. I said, you know, at least four.
