So far, I feel great physically, but socially, not so much. I'm 25, so a lot of my friends, they love to go out. I get texts, hey, come out. It stings a little because I thought if I felt better physically, I may just continue this the rest of the year. But it's not as fun. Not because I just love drinking, but because I love being around my friends. Bobby, I know you've never drank. What's your advice on how I can stay connected during Sober October? Sober, but still social. I don't know that I'm the best person for this because I only know sober. Like, I've never had a drink. So it's. I actually am jealous of people who do go out and drink and can, like, relax and be more social because I am not very social. And I don't think that's alcohol's problem. I am just not very social. So good for you for going, hey, I'm sit out October and just see what happens. But you don't need alcohol to be yourself, so there's an adjustment period. You can still go out with all your friends and just drink something that's not alcohol and just get used to. That's the new norm. The new norm is you don't drink. It ain't as fun, I'll be honest.

[Amy]

Yeah, but you're gonna feel so much better again.

[Bobby Bones]

I don't even know that. I don't know how bad it is.

Yeah, that's why I don't think I'm perfect for this as much as I've never drank. Yeah, good for you for not drinking if you're not making bad decisions. Hey, can I have a drink or two? I don't care. But I can understand your friends going out. They'll stop inviting you if you stop. If you just stop Going. Because you're not drinking. Like, I don't get invited to anything by anybody ever now in my life. But you know why? Because I never go to anything. I don't want to go to anything.

[Amy]

But you still want to be invited.

[Bobby Bones]

Yeah, but I don't want to go. But we should still invite you. Yeah, but. But nobody does, right? And they don't, though, because I don't go. You know what I mean? It's kind of a cycle I put myself in. But back in the day, like, we used to go to bars and. Yeah, I was trying to get girls, though. I know, but we would all drink and you wouldn't. So, like, how did you. How did that.

[Amy]

But Bobby's point is he's never had alcohol, so there's no adjustment.

[Bobby Bones]

But he would always order a drink, though. Like, you would have a. Like a Red Bull. I'd have a fake drink.

[Amy]

Yeah.

[Bobby Bones]

But it was. It was because that's a tip. I didn't even want to socialize with you guys. You guys are just fine to hang out with. I'm not. Good. But it was just like, I was. I was single, so I would go out and be like, let me see if I can get any girls.

[Amy]

Yeah.

And no, I didn't.

More and more places have mocktails on the menu. Or you can just get a soda and lime or something.

This is my answer to your thing. If you don't want to drink. There are going to be sacrifices in not drinking. And the sacrifice is it's not going to be as fun to go out with your friends. It's not going to be as fun. Now there's also sacrifice if you do drink. Your health isn't going to be. You're not going to feel as good either way. There's going to be a sacrifice of what your life is right now. You just have to determine what's more important to you. But you can go out and still hang out with your friends if they're drinking. I mean, I do. Yeah. And I go out, but yeah, go out to dinner. We drink. You don't. Correct. And we hang out. But I. What do you tell them?

[Amy]

I think that you give yourself this month and see how you feel. You're going to be able to navigate the rest of the month fine. You're. It's just. You're still, like, in the beginning. So you just go. You order like a mocktail type situation. So you're still holding something and then evaluated after October.

[Bobby Bones]

Yeah. You're gonna have to make the decision. Do you want to feel better physically or do you want to be more social with your friends?

[Amy]

Because you're not going to lose friends in this one month.

[Bobby Bones]

You won't lose friends, but they'll invite you to less things if you start.

[Amy]

I feel like if that if the no drinking continues and it may be where you're like, okay, maybe I give myself a weekend a month where I do because I do think overall you'll see that you're feeling better. And maybe that's just been a discovery of mine this year and because I'm mid-40s, but I notice big time when I have a drink or when I don't like, it's so obvious to me the next day how crappy I feel.

[Bobby Bones]

Because the poison you're not putting in your body.

Yeah, like if I do decide to drink, I'm like, oh, I just don't like the way I feel anymore. It used to not impact me the way that it does and so now I really weigh that. Like to me it's just not worth it sometimes now. Sometimes it is.

He was homeless when he lived in Delaware. That's how I found him. He was homeless. And then another tick tock. Just somebody that followed him bought him a plane ticket and said, hey, I know you could rent a room, but it's in Memphis. Do you want to take the offer? I'm offering it. And he did. Because he did not want to be homeless. Like, he was legit, living outside of Cabela's. Like, okay, it was that.

That was a good clarification, though. Yes. So. So I did. I did. I picked him up. I. I bought him a few get little small gifts. A blanket, a keychain with, like, positive affirmations on it. I gave him a card with really nice things in it. We introduced ourselves in person. We went to BB Kings in on Beale Street.

Yes. It was really good. We had great conversation. We laughed. We. We told each other about ourselves, like, you know, just, like, how we are and just basic questions, you know, and. But it really felt like I was sitting with a friend that I already knew, and it was the best experience. And I really felt like I was doing what I was supposed to do. Like we're supposed to spread love and positivity and give people a chance. And I understand that Jill, 22 years in the FBI, is very reluctant because she sees a lot of evil in the world, but I'm always. My glass is half full, and I'm trying to fill it the rest of the way and let People know, like, pimp and Joy. That is how everyone should live. Like, I could cry talking about it like that is. I wish everybody was more like that.

[Bobby Bones]

Okay, I have a couple things I'd like to say. Number one, as I said the first time we spoke, I can tell you have a very kind heart. And for that I'm appreciative. Because it's not just a kind heart. It's a kind heart where you are actionable with that heart. And I think that's gonna serve you so well through life, and I hope it has for you to this point. I don't like it. You picked him up in your car. Now it happened and it was fine, and it turns out okay. If anybody else is listening. I hope you take something away from this, except for the picking them up in the car, because that makes you vulnerable. Even Melody knew that, though. She didn't tell us. That's the. I just gotta shout out this baker in Charlotte, North Carolina. It's the owner of Manolo's Bakery. And for 12 years he's been giving free birthday cakes to people that are experiencing homelessness so that they still get to celebrate their birthdays.

[Bobby Bones]

That's cool.

Yeah. He's from Colombia, but he moved to the US like 25 years ago. No money, no English. Later attended college in Tennessee, then he settled down in North Carolina. And then he's been running his bakery since 2005. And this is something that he just started doing and it filled people, people with so much joy. And they just recently celebrated the delivery of their 300th cake.

[Bobby Bones]

Wow, that's super cool. I'm jealous of. I can't eat dairy. Oh, yeah, it sucks. I can't even have a cake.

[Amy]

Well, you can get a vegan cake.

[Bobby Bones]

I hear you. And I don't want that. And sometimes I settle on that. You guys don't know what it's like. Like, there are some real hardships in the world, but none as much as not being able to eat dairy.

I have a whole box of lactate and I'll try it if I think there's a chance of a trace of dairy. Yeah, this isn't something I've had my whole life, so I'm not even, like, used to it. It sucks. Like, I hear you talk about, like, terrible diseases. Ain't nothing you'd be allergic to. Dairy. That's where the real problem. They need to do a telethon for that. And so I haven't committed to taking a bunch of lact and then just eating chips and queso or pizza. Yeah, it's risky, man. But I have to have like, like, I need to have like a Runway. I. I also don't want my stomach to hurt, but I need to have like a three day Runway after. Because once I do it, I'm done, I'm out.

My son uses it and it works for him.

Can he have chips of queso when he takes lactate, does he get really. If he doesn't, does he get really sick? Because I do.

[Amy]

Yes. And we didn't know if it was in his head. So my daughter had this Idea of like, she's like, I think that a lot of this is in his head.

Yeah, she like Roofy y.

[Amy]

No, she felt like some of it was in his head. So she put like regular milk in his lactate.

Like she, she switched. She saved her to jail. I know, I know. She saved an extra bottle of his that was gonna go in the trash. And she's like, mom, let's just please let me try this out because I think it's mental. But sure enough, he drank it and.

He said, did mom allow that? Because that. What I heard is mom allowed that.

[Amy]

Because I kind of sort of thought a little bit it was mental too, because it just kind of came about and then I think he convinced himself of it. But now we know. Now we know. His stomach hurts.

So. Yeah, so what happened?

[Amy]

Yeah, he. His stomach was hurting and he wasn't feeling good. So now we can lay it to rest.

If like I hurt a hamstring or a shoulder because I train, you know.

But I don't have time to memorize every single product or ability. What do you mean, mostly abilities? You do have time. What do you mean he's a math genius? What does that have to do with anything? You don't have to be a math genius to watch the show and write down numbers, like, literally, but to remember them. But then why would you not do that if you're going to get on the show?
