Okay, so some people. Well, I would say most people hate colonoscopies. Right.

[Bobby Bones]

It's just like never had a fun one.

[Amy]

Never had a fun one. The prep is pretty horrible. Although you do feel like a fresh start, you know?

[Bobby Bones]

So the prep is you have to drink this concoction that makes you just crap your brains out.

[Amy]

Everything is gone. And so, yeah, just. You do feel, ah, like feel a little. If there's a bonus, it's that I

[Bobby Bones]

feel that way after the flu though too. And I don't love the flu.

[Amy]

Yeah, well, and then depending on your results, you feel good knowing getting the information of how you feel. Well, now there's a new option if you are doing colonoscopies for colon cancer screening. And it's a blood test, huh?

[Kat]

That. I like that.

[Bobby Bones]

Is this something new? They found that the blood can tell us that they did not know in the past.

[Amy]

Well, this was approved by the FDA in 2024. It detects fragments of tumor DNA in the blood and can be done during a regular blood draw at the doctor's office. The American Cancer Society now recommends it every three years for adults 45 and older who won't otherwise get screened for colon cancer. The catch?

[Kat]

Oh, there's a catch?

[Amy]

There's a catch. Like for me, because of my family history. Like, I need to get the colonoscopy.

[Bobby Bones]

Is it. Why?

[Amy]

I guess it's just a percentage of what it will catch isn't as high as if you get the colonoscopy. So I guess it's if you just want to do the screenings because your age, but with a family history, you need to go all in.

[Bobby Bones]

So that tells you some, but not all. And it could tell you enough to know maybe you need to get the all.

[Amy]

Exactly.

[Bobby Bones]

But it doesn't fully clear you. If things are going way wrong, you need to still get the way wrong one, which is the full tube up the butt.

[Amy]

Yeah. And right now, colorectal cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in adults under 50, which is crazy because under 50, you used to associate it with older white men, and now.

[Bobby Bones]

Dang racist.

[Amy]

Well, it's just that Stats Cancer was racist like that? Yeah, dude, that's just stats I've seen.

[Bobby Bones]

I had a shirt I was wearing when we were in Connecticut the other day and said, don't be racist.

[Kat]

Loved it.

[Bobby Bones]

It's literally just in the front said, don't be racist. I just like the shirt. And it was kind of baggy because I've been kind of dad boding it. And so I was walking around the casino, not really thinking. I just packed it and I was wearing it, and some guy comes up to me, goes, I agree. And I'm like, so I'm talking about. I didn't know what he was talking about. I was just like, yeah. Because I didn't know if he was like a show listener. And I was like, yeah. And then I was like, oh, my shirt.

[Amy]

Yeah.

[Bobby Bones]

And then they'd make the little jokes because people like to make Mexican jokes about Eddie or they make white guy jokes about me. It's just kind of our thing, you know? And I lift my shirt up, be like, don't be racist, guys.

[Kat]

Don't do it.

[Bobby Bones]

My shirt up. Don't be racist.

Yeah, good.

[Amy]

Well, I wasn't. That's just. Also I said that. I'm. That's the data I've seen. I'm just pulling that. Like, I have heard it used to be an older white man thing. Yeah. It feels racist, but it's not. It's just. That's where they were seeing it show off a lot. And now it's.

[Bobby Bones]

What if it was just more older white men had the resources to go and get the test screenings?

[Amy]

Could be that. But there are certain races where certain diseases.

[Bobby Bones]

Yeah. Cause that's because Mexican people die early.

[Kat]

I mean. Yeah.

[Morgan]

Well, there's like.

[Kat]

Like our food is pretty bad, so we kind of eat like crap.

[Bobby Bones]

Oh, that's why you say that. It's rooted into your nutrition.

[Kat]

I think so. Because, like, my grandparents didn't. All of them didn't live past 72, I think. And so, yeah, it's kind of like. And we all just ate a lot of fat, a lot of cholesterol. And everybody had some sort of high cholesterol, high high blood pressure. Half probably had diabetes.

[Amy]

Yeah. I don't know if it's something. My daughter, where she picked it up in school, like, what class? Science or whatever. She came home one day talking about how she needs to take care of her heart because of heart disease in African American women. Like, it just.

[Bobby Bones]

Hey, all you guys feel racist right now?

[Amy]

No, she. My sister yeah, it is what it is. My daughter was saying that because she is black.

[Bobby Bones]

I know. I'm sure there's something to it anytime.

[Amy]

Yeah.

I need to wear my don't racist shirt though.

Yeah.

Dude, I saw a TikTok of this girl like at the grocery store reading the back of a box and the title said, I spent all my college years drinking liters of vodka and now I care about what I'm putting in my body.

[Amy]

Right. I know, it's like, it's just funny.

But it's never too late.

[Amy]

Yeah. And it's not. And you can reverse things.

[Bobby Bones]

What I'm hoping is there's some grand discovery and they've already been slow rolling this out. A grand discovery that why people are dying more and earlier and getting all these different cancers is because of alcohol.

[Amy]

Oh, some people say that.

[Bobby Bones]

I know what I'm saying. They're rolling it out now. But that's like, because they're wondering why all these people are dying at earlier age. Why could this colorectal cancels happen, Everything's all right. And I, and I just want to be like, oh, we figured out it's alcohol.

Yeah.

God, that'd be hard news.

[Bobby Bones]

That'd be, I'm gonna live forever and then I get hit by a car.

[Amy]

I do, I do think about that.

That's how it would work.

Like as you're praising yourself. Yeah. I do think about how Bobby's never had a sip of alcohol and it does likely favor him in so many ways.

Oh yeah, no alcohol and not a lot of sun early in my life. Sun. Cuz I had a lot of outside jobs, golf course, roofing, stuff like that. But my adult years, no sun, very little sun. I'm good. I don't like sun.

They need some.

You need that vitamin D. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

I'm on the other side of that. But yeah, it would just be good. Like all you guys are dying because you're drinking. And me,

Yeah, this is an interesting story and case and I'm gonna say justice for this teacher. There's a 35 year old teacher in Alabama. She's the high school basketball coach, led the team to a state title. Well, she's been arrested on 30 counts of a school employee distributing obscene material to a student. One count of school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 19. And so she was sending pictures back and forth with his 18 year old student. They hooked up, she's arrested. Well, she is asking that the charges be dismissed because she wasn't his teacher. He doesn't even go to that high school. He goes to a different school completely. She's never been his teacher, never been in charge of him in an extracurricular activity. No teacher, student relationship. And so she wants all the charges dropped.

Okay. He's 18.

Yep.

He was 18 the entire time.

The entire time.

[Bobby Bones]

And he's not at her school at all.

[Lunchbox]

If what he is saying is accurate, justice for the teacher.

If this kid was not even at her school and he was an adult, how can you arrest her?

If the teachers take some sort of a like oath of like if you're in school anywhere.

A teacher cratic oath.

No, it still feels weird.

Do you know who reported her? Like who started this whole thing? Probably that's what I would think. His parents.

He's 18.

[Amy]

If I. Bobby, I don't care if I have an 18 year old living in my house. That's my child that's still in high school and I find out.

Some 35 year old. She's 35?

Yeah, she's 35.

I'm not saying I'm not Saying it's good. I'm not saying it's good.

I'm going to be like, I go after it.

Amy, you would go to the cops.

Well, I don't know what I would go. I would go to the teacher. No, like, no, he's still in high school. I agree. And you're busy.

You can do all that. I have no problem with any of that. And it's weird, but it's not illegal. We can't set a law to say that people are adults at 18 and then not treat them as adults. Yeah, but second, no, secondly, you go ahead.

18 year olds that are still in high school and living under their parents, they're abiding by rules that parents have.

[Bobby Bones]

Societal rules, not laws. Different. Completely different. Those are two different buckets.

[Amy]

I know. Well, some parents might be like, you can't date, date adult teachers till you're out of the house.

[Bobby Bones]

And that's fine. And I hope he gets in trouble. But she should not go to jail. Oh yeah, because she's banging an 18 year old.

[Amy]

Okay, now what if. Your point.

[Kat]

What if the 18 year old was. Her student, was at that school.

[Bobby Bones]

Different. Different because of the power dynamic where the student could have felt that they needed to do that even though they didn't want to because there was some sort of power. She fails. She. It could affect. That's different because that situation. Okay, so have y' all seen. I want everybody to know I'm not. I didn't start the petition to let adults have sex with 18 year olds, especially teachers and students. But if we're going to be consistent with Our laws, an 18 year old legally is an adult if she's not a teacher at his school. That is not something that we should be jumping in.

I think we need to re evaluate what adult is.

[Bobby Bones]

Yeah. 25.

Seriously serious.

The prefrontal cortex isn't even fully developed.

But we haven't.

And I want to. I do want to hear your story, but this has to get dropped. We cannot say that an 18 year old is an adult and then not let them be an adult.

I agree. I don't think she should go to jail.

But Lunchbox did say under 19. So is that the law in that state? Under 19.

[Bobby Bones]

Because if that's the law, I've never heard of that law. I never heard of that law.

It's a student under 19, but it's not her student. Like that's what I. And they just said that they received a complaint. The school board did they didn't say who, how they got it. I have not read anywhere where they were how they were told. But yeah, she was like, look, I mean he was 18 and he wasn't my student. So I don't see anything wrong with it.

[Bobby Bones]

It's also a stupid law. 19, that's not even a real number that allows you to do nothing. What if you're an 18 year old college student? Well, you're still 18 and a student. Right. It is weird. And as the parents, I'm probably like, what? You're taking advantage of my young adult son? Totally. And I might as a mom beat you up. But I. She can't go to jail for that. That is ridiculous. Now if he was 18 at her, at her school, different story. Different. Completely different story. But I'm with you. Weird.

Yeah, it's weird. Yeah. Cuz I just like look at kids these days and they look so young. Occasionally there's an anomaly where it's like wait, What? That kid's 13 and he looks 20. Like it's weird. Like he's really tall, muscular, has a mustache. It's.

[Bobby Bones]

Hand to God, you now have fun. Your hand. Hand to God. The other hand to God. You don't have fun. And when she does hand. When she does hand to God, she raises back her right arm with no hand on it.

Go hand to God with that. At that point, at the officer, you probably just like, you know what? Yeah, we're gonna call it a day.

Yeah.

Because unless you saw her with no hands on the steering wheel at all, driving with her knees, with her left arm across her body, you probably didn't see her on the phone.

I know, it's weird. Like, what did he see, though?

[Kat]

I mean, maybe it wasn't her right hand. Maybe he just saw the hand.

[Bobby Bones]

But again, that means no hand is on the steering wheel.

[Kat]

Right?

[Amy]

But she. Some people drive with their elbow.

[Bobby Bones]

Yeah. There was another theory online that she had a prosthetic and she took it off right before the car.

[Amy]

Oh, again, we don't know that.

[Bobby Bones]

Totally rooted in no truth at all. That was just someone going, it'd be funny if that were the case. So I thought that was hilarious.

[Kat]

You're right, though. The angle is just perfect. It's almost like they shot it shooting a movie.

[Bobby Bones]

Like, we have the perfect angle for this funny scene to happen.

[Amy]

Have y' all this popped into your algorithm at all? The girl that she doesn't have arms at all. She only has feet, but she can cook and drive. She has a special license that she's been granted. It's fascinating. She can chop food with a knife with her toes.

[Bobby Bones]

That's awesome. At my stepsister growing up, Arkansas, Keith's daughter was in a car wreck and lost her leg. And so even to watch her start, I hate to say the normal, because what's normal? We all have crap that's going on, but for her to slowly develop and use that as it is a natural part of her body, again, was really cool to see.

[Amy]

Yeah, that's what I mean. I was. I was. I don't even know how many videos deep once this girl's thing popped up on my page, because I was so just in awe of her determination to be able to, you know, figure all that out and do it and the time it must take. And then what I learned was that, yes, because she was driving in one of the videos and she was like, yes, I have a license to drive. Like, she went to school, got a special.

[Bobby Bones]

I love it. That's so inspiring.

I know.

[Bobby Bones]

Like, rock on. Here I am, I got one eye that works. And I'm like, wait, wait, me, me?

Oh, yeah.

But you guys don't even know what. You guys don't know what that's like though.

If I got pulled over and the cops, like, I saw you looking at your phone with your right eye, I'd be like, you sure about that?

Where have you been? I like to do this. Where in the world is karma? In San Diego. Where's Kev Moore been in the last three months?

[Kip Moore]

I haven't. I went down to. I went down to Costa Rica for a brief minute. I had like six days off and I went surfing. But I just kind of been here doing a lot of different stuff, a lot of studio stuff and then kind of getting prepped for this.

[Bobby Bones]

That picture behind you is you in front of a gto. Is that your car?

[Kip Moore]

No, that's not car. My buddy Matt Dorchen as who's been a friend of mine for a long time. His friend had that car that the dad had passed and that was like his baby. And he said, I've got a car for you. Because he knew that we were going out to Arizona to shoot a lot of this footage. And I told him what we were kind of looking for, and he's like, I've got the car. And they were kind enough to let us hold it. But it was, it was. We knew how precious the car was to this family. And that was intense to like make sure that you didn't treat it like a rental. Nothing happened to the car.

[Bobby Bones]

Yeah, I saw a video. It's been a while now where I'm not sure what happened, so I'd love the story on it. All of a sudden you're outside playing guitar by a fence in a foreign country and there's a bunch of people surrounding you. Did they kick you out of somewhere because it was late and so you took the. The concert out into the back.

[Kip Moore]

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was. That was in Dublin, Ireland. That was a long time ago that I did. It's like old footage, kind of.

[Bobby Bones]

It looks like video. I don't know if it was old or not.

[Kip Moore]

You're like.

[Bobby Bones]

You're like Peter Pan, dude. You don't look older, so all the

[Kip Moore]

stuff looks the same, you know, it happened. Well, it happened the first time in Dublin, and because so many people videoed it, then it got to be where every night no one would leave after the show was over. So it happened.

[Bobby Bones]

And.

[Kip Moore]

And Glasgow was probably the biggest. It was at least 2,000 people in the streets after Glasgow concert.

[Bobby Bones]

So just go on the street after the show and take your acoustic guitar and sing.

[Kip Moore]

Yeah, I did. So the first time in Dublin, they were all in the alley and I could hear everybody chanting for. I mean, it went on for 45 minutes, where, you know, I was just so taken aback by it that I kind of stepped outside and when I peeked my head out, you know, everybody, you know, started cheering. So they were all chanting for Heart's Desire, which I hadn't played. So I just grabbed my guitar and I just started playing Heart's Desire. And then they just kind of took over and sang it for me. And then when that footage got out, it got to where every show I did, people were outside chanting. So then I just started kind of that whole tour. I would just kind of go out and play for people after the show.

[Bobby Bones]

Is that cool?

[Kip Moore]

Yeah, it was cool. It was. It was endearing. It was super endearing.

[Bobby Bones]

What song do people sing the loudest at your shows? And is there a difference in America and when you're not in America, for sure.

[Kip Moore]

I mean, you got take Heart's Desire. I mean, that's been a massive hit in other countries. So I would say that Heart's Desire as a whole, which was on the Wild Ones record. That Was Us. That was Us, has always been a really big one in the Bull. But, you know, those songs are also loud in the States. But I would say, as a whole, Heart's Desire has got to be unequivocally the. The biggest song I have. I mean, it's bigger than Truck.

[Bobby Bones]

Really?

[Kip Moore]

Yeah. I mean, just as far as. If you're just going by the States, that's the most known song. But at a show, even in America, Truck's not The loudest. When I'm playing a show amongst the fan base, I would say the Bull Hearts Desire. That was us.

[Bobby Bones]

I'd be singing somebody loud. I'd be up row.

[Kip Moore]

I mean, it's. I don't. I don't believe you. But, yeah, if I know you, you'd be in the back, and you'd be kind of chilling out.

[Amy]

Yeah.

[Bobby Bones]

Kind of back in the corner. That's a good point.

[Kip Moore]

That's you in the front. Maybe Eddie, maybe Lunchbox. But I don't. I don't see you doing that.

[Bobby Bones]

Do you have any of. Because you wrote these songs on the new records out today, by the way. In the new record is Reason to Believe. Do you have any fun Kip stories of you writing a song somewhere? Really odd from this record?

[Kip Moore]

I mean, as far as, like, odd,

[Bobby Bones]

like you're in an ant hill in Peru and you're like,

[Kip Moore]

no, I don't have any. I mean, a lot of these. A lot of these ideas. Yeah, for sure. I mean, there was. There was two or three ideas that came to me while I was on a dirt bike down in Central America where, like, I'm thinking of it, but it's not. Like I've kind of done that a lot through my career where I'll stop and then I'll get a cup of coffee, and then I'll just start kind of singing what I'm hearing in my head. And then I'll drive on to the next spot, and then I'll kind of, okay, well, I'm out there. But nothing's like, nothing, nothing. Like, you know, the way I wrote Love and War, which was really wild how I wrote that. But, I mean, there was nothing that was really out of the norm this time.

[Bobby Bones]

Did you write all these songs near each other?

[Kip Moore]

Yeah, yeah, for sure. I mean, like, I wrote the Darkness, Long Time Coming, Faith in the Wind. I would say at least four of them were all within a week. But I mean, like, I'm writing every day. Like, the minute Solitary Tracks was over, I was writing the next day. But I probably wrote 30 songs over the next three months before I started, before I landed on the Darkness. And that's kind of how it works for me. I landed on the Darkness and Faith in the Wind in the same time period. And I was like, oh, okay, I'm. There's something I got. I'm. I'm saying now there's, like, a thing that's happening. So that's when, like, the record starts.

[Bobby Bones]

What are you trying to say with this whole record, then

[Kip Moore]

I think that so much of this record is when I think about the title of Reason To Believe, and. And Reason to Believe was Brett James's favorite song that I have for so many years. And that was kind of like he was always. We tried to put it on Up All Night. We tried to put it on Wild Ones. I just kind of missed it when I recorded it, and sometimes that happens, but I felt like a lot of this record like the Darkness. I remember writing that chorus at like one o' clock in the morning on my back porch. And it's. I've always. At the core of me, I've always had a faith about me, and I still. I know that I have that. Even when I feel like I'm losing it or I'm questioning do I have it anymore. I know at the core of me, I have it. But I have struggled in my adult life a lot, and especially since this has been my career, Not feeling worthy in a lot of ways, a lot of vulnerability. I feel like there's a dark entity chasing me all the time, and I'm always trying to do my best at trying to find the light, and I can't quite find it, and it gets really, really, really heavy for me at times. And I think that essentially with a lot of record is. Is having faith that even, like with the Darkness, I do. I do purposeful things with sonically, a lot of the record where I'm trying to pull that rubber band to keep a lot of tension on the verses. And then when the chorus opens up, I'm trying to make it feel like, sonically, it's going in this place of A. And then that's even, like, in the end, when it's all O. I'm trying to almost create like an angel choir, like, around what's happening, to even help myself to feel like. You know, reassure myself that, you know, even when it. When it is as dark as it gets, I know what I believe in at the core of me, and everything's going to be okay. And I think there's just a lot faith in the wind, a lot of that messaging throughout the record.

[Bobby Bones]

Do you have insecurities in how you are as an artist musically?

[Kip Moore]

I think we all have so many. I mean, I got tons of. You know, it's like I feel very comfortable in my skin, and I've always felt comfortable in being who I am, and I've always felt a little left of center, and I don't feel comfortable in certain crowds, even though I can. I can adapt. But I think we all have insecurities, but I think that. I don't think that I ever felt the way I feel as far as that word goes. Until I was doing music for a living. I've always been really hard on myself. But it's like when I finished this record, and it seems to happen every time where I'm like, you know, whether people are like, holy cow, this lyric and this and that and this is. And then I'm kind of off in the, in the shadows going, gosh, this I suck. I. I should just hang this up. And then I just, I. I get really self deprecating. But then it's like, I'll step on the stage and it's like, I know that I'm good at. I know that I'm good at that, but I might spiral from one thing that I see and feeling like I'm not. It's a. I don't think that I ever battled that in life the way I battle that now with this being. Because you're exposing a different part of yourself, I feel like. And it's kind of, you know, I work so hard at this, and then I'm always practicing and I'm always trying to get better at what I do, and I'm always trying to be a great writer. And you measure yourself against your heroes and this and that. And people close to me think it's silly, but. I mean, I think that a lot of people, you know, especially in music, deal with that, but I think as a whole, with just different things that we do in life. You know, one minute you're like, I'm not bad at this. And the next minute you're like, what am I even doing? You know? But I think that, yeah, I think that's just honest.

[Bobby Bones]

Yeah, I kind of hate myself a lot of times. And I. I will tell my therapist that, like, I'm really not having a good moment with me. It gets thrown around, but very much imposter syndrome. I feel at times too. And my therapist will say, hey, what's three good things about you? And he'll make me do that. What do you think are three good things about you that you have to say about yourself?

[Kip Moore]

Man, Bobby, I don't know if we need to do this right now, man. I think that. I think that I really. Look, I know that I look out not only for people that I care about, but I. I'll go out of my way to inject myself with trying to help people out. I. I don't know at all.

[Bobby Bones]

That's strong. That's one. That's a good one. I love that one. That's one.

[Kip Moore]

I'll just go with that, man.

Why are you so uncomfortable saying something nice about you?

[Kip Moore]

I don't know. I just. It's just not my bag. But I know that I do that. I know that I do that.

Now you see the position you're putting him.

I don't have an out. I don't like. We're talking about his album where he has all this self discovery and it's like, hey, let's do some.

[Amy]

Maybe one would. Oh, you do it. You do what you're going to do. And then I can. I have one.

[Bobby Bones]

You go ahead. You can do one.

[Amy]

Okay. I would say you're willing to do the work. Like self discovery. Not everybody is open to digging deeper to do the work, to want to be more introspective. And I think that that's a positive about you.

[Kip Moore]

I appreciate that.

[Bobby Bones]

I got one.

[Kip Moore]

Yeah.

[Bobby Bones]

I feel like as an artist, you know exactly who you are, and even if you don't, you're chasing exactly who you are and you don't compromise when putting out your art. And I think at times that's been great for you. And at times people have probably said, hey, maybe we should like, make it a little soft, make it a little easier. And you're like, nope, I know who I am. I think that's a great thing about you.

[Kip Moore]

I've been diligent about that throughout my career, and that hasn't been easy, but. Yeah, I mean, give us another one.

[Bobby Bones]

We just gave you one.

[Kip Moore]

You know, I mean, you're a good golfer. I will. What's that?

[Bobby Bones]

You're good golfer.

[Kip Moore]

Yeah, but that's not.

[Amy]

You have really hands, but that's still something.

[Bobby Bones]

That's the kind of crap I do in therapy. I'm like, I don't know. I got good hair. Some days I'm just there.

[Kip Moore]

I will say this. It's saying what you said, you know, it's. I will say this. I will beat myself up in that regard of being like, golly, you know, like, I have not been the human that I want to be in this situation. And I feel like I do. I don't have a problem. I feel like the world has gotten we all know this. It's gotten so tribal and you stick your flag and this is where you stand and there's no compromising. And I, I don't have a problem. I might not like what you say at first when you get some kind of criticism. I don't know anybody that likes it at first. But I really don't have a problem going back and looking at what I've discovered or you've discovered. And you've said to me, I have no problem being like, I need to work on that. I'm sorry. Like, I know that. I know that. I do that. I try to do that often. So I would say that's another one for sure.

[Bobby Bones]

Because I'll play it. So I need you. I need to say something.

[Kip Moore]

Well, Levy was me waking up to. I haven't, I've been intentionally, you know, not watching the news in a while. I got kind of wrapped up in it, whether it's from social stuff from, from the news. And I'm, I'm just. I woke up so sick and tired of how humanity is operating as a whole. And I feel like we, we are sheep at our core. And I feel like when, when whatever the people that we look to, however they're steering the thing, we all just kind of fall in line and, and our nature as far as people on TV that you follow on social media that are, you know, or politicians, the way they communicate now, we've all adopted that. So we just kind of scream and shout at each other and everybody's so self righteous. And I woke up so frustrated with that. And I've tried to always see nuance in the world and nuance in each situation. So that just kind of came out as a visceral, like, response to what Hank, my guitar player was playing. He was just playing the opening riff, and then I just started spitting those lyrics to that song and it just kind of came out pretty quick. And Luke Preston was on the road with me and we went back to the bus and he's like, I know exactly what you're trying to say. And we probably wrote that in like 20 minutes.

[Bobby Bones]

I have this picture of you in my head, and you can tell me if it's not true of you just like on a motorcycle, but you have a guitar on your back in different countries. Is that how you ride a motorcycle?

[Kip Moore]

No. No, it's not. Oh, dad, no.

[Bobby Bones]

You got a guitar in his bag anytime he gets on play songs?

[Kip Moore]

No, I haven't. But I did do the long trip to. Down to the bottom of Baja from LA with just a backpack with a couple buddies, and that was incredible.

[Bobby Bones]

But no guitar?

[Kip Moore]

No guitar.

You just like pull over on the side of the road in the desert and you just play.

[Kat]

No, I don't do that, Bobby. That doesn't happen.

Who's your favorite artist of all time?

[Kip Moore]

Oh, wow. I would say the most impactful was Tom Petty. For me, that's the one that I laid on the. On that hardwood floor in that little garage apartment that I was living in for so long in my mid to late 20s. And I just thought he was the master at saying the simple things in such a creative way. And he was just. Him and Dylan were probably my two most impactful. Van Morrison would be my island record if I was stuck on an island. Sam Cooke. Love, love, love Sam Cooke. I listened to a lot of Sam Cooke growing up, but I would say

[Bobby Bones]

Petty, did you have music in your house growing up?

[Kip Moore]

A lot. A lot. My mom played organ in the church and she taught piano lessons. And my dad was just a lover of music, so he was always playing rock and roll. And then my mom was big on, like, she loved Redheaded Stranger, but she wanted to be Willie Nelson's piano player. And I would always say, mom, you. You don't party enough for that gig. I don't think that's your gig. But I would come home from school, my mom was like, this. Is this just proper sweet? She's the sweetest woman. And a lot of times it's hard to get the stuff out of her. Like, she'll. She'll kind of talk here, but she's just always so sweet. And one day I came home and she's just riffing on the. In the end section of November Rain that dun Dun, dun, dun. And I'm like 10th grade, and I'm just like, my mom is really cool, you know, but, you know, you're growing up and you just kind of. My dad was the one that was the wild guy, and he was playing all the records and stuff. But my mom was such a lover of good music.

[Bobby Bones]

How do they feel about you pursuing a career in music?

[Kip Moore]

I think they. I think they both thought I was a little. Because I didn't. My household was very intimidating and not to break down family dynamics, but, like, I get along my siblings great. Like, we're great, but it's. It was a. It was a talented household, but it wasn't a. You weren't gonna get a pat on the back, and you weren't gonna for sure get a pat on the back if it wasn't good. Whatever it was. It just wasn't gonna happen that way. There was no third place trophies. There wasn't a oh, you're doing good, keep it, keep it up kind of thing, you know, and. And there was a lot more joking, almost making fun of whatever was kind of somebody was doing. And. And that's the way they show love, you know? But like my. My older brother, who I just. I looked up to both my brothers so much, but my older brother was a really good guitar player, and I was such a sponge of all the records he was playing, all the Nirvana records in Pearl Jam, and then he was, you know, playing blues records, and. And then he was playing Paul Simon and playing, you know, all these people. And he's probably one of the main reasons I'm doing what I'm doing, because I looked up to him so much, but he didn't know that. But I always told myself, because I was writing lyrics and songs at an early age that nobody knew about, even when I was a teenager. And then I told myself, the minute I get to college, my freshman year, I'm going to buy a guitar and I'm going to learn how to do this. I just didn't want to learn to do it in front of them.

[Bobby Bones]

Was there ever a moment where they said, hey, we're proud of you, sincerely.

[Kip Moore]

I know they are. I know they are.

[Bobby Bones]

So they don't say with words, you know, through.

[Kip Moore]

Yeah, I know they are. Yeah, yeah, I do. Yeah, I do.

[Bobby Bones]

You wish they would,

[Kip Moore]

man. I've just kind of learned. I'm, you know, I know how they feel about me, you know, I think. I think when you look up to whether it's your brothers, whether it's your dad, Whether it's your mom, whatever it is, I think that any kid is gonna want that. You know, I just think that's a natural, innate thing that we all have in us, you know, I think that. But, I mean, I had an amazing. My dad was incredible, but he was hard. He was a hard guy, but he was. He was amazing. You know, I wouldn't trade it for anything. And he was charismatic, and he was. He was just incredible. And my brothers, like, I know. I know how they feel about me. It's just not like a verbal. It's not a verbal affirmation kind of house, and that's okay, you know? But, yeah, I mean, when you look up to people the way I've looked up them, of course, yeah, it'd be cool, but it's not something that I need in that sense.

[Bobby Bones]

I felt like, for me, when I started to perform in any way, if it was on a stage doing jokes or was doing this, like, I find the root of it was me, like, trying to get that external love, because I didn't get it. And, like, that's where I would go and chase it, and then. And then I would feel it, and it wouldn't last very long. Go back to our hotel room, be like, oh, I'm lonely again. But I would. But literally, I was just searching for love, like, on a stage, because I didn't get that. Like, it wasn't told to me. I didn't have a dad, you know, whatever. Yeah, wham, whammy. But is any of your performance. You're pursuing a performance that Are you searching for any sort of external love?

[Kip Moore]

Man, it's interesting. You know, you talk about this stuff, and I'm really careful with these things, but I've been unpacking, I think, for the longest time, my whole life. I think you kind of create this world that, oh, this is what it was. This is what it is. And, you know, you get a little, like, wait a minute. That's. It's not quite. I've kind of created this thing of, you know, and so I've been unpacking a lot of that, I feel like, in the last couple years, like, truly unpacking it. And, you know, I do think that, just to give you an example, I can remember, you know, my dad was this freak athlete. He was truly just this freak of nature kind of thing. And like I've said, you know, you just. He was never gonna be su. I can remember riding, you know, in the back of the car as a kid. And I'm Probably. I don't know. I'd say nine or ten. And my dad was the. You know, the head golf pro and the head superintendent, this little club in my hometown. And, you know, my middle brother, my older brother David, was just such a good junior golfer, and he's still a good golfer, and he was a stud, and he was kind. That was kind of his lane. And I was basketball and baseball. But, you know, I got to where I was kind of going out to the golf course because I was like, you know, I want to show my dad I can do this, you know, And I'm getting out there hacking it around as a kid, and I can remember riding home in the car with my mom and dad and my brother, and my dad's kind of telling David, and he's 12 or 13 at this time. Like, David, you keep. You keep practicing, man, you're gonna be something in this game, you know? And I'm in the back seat, and I've been out there a few times just kind of hitting balls, and I'm like, you know, how's my. How's. How's. How's my swing look, you know, when you looked at it? And I can just. I'll never forget it, you know? And he kind of turned around and said, not good, and just kept driving, and that was it. And I can remember my mom going, stan, he goes, what? You want me to lie to him? And I. There's part of me that loves that, because I. I knew that when he did tell me something, he meant it, you know? But I can remember I did not pick up a golf club again until I was set. Until I was like. I remember it was my junior summer because I'd quit baseball, and I was waiting on basketball season. I was already getting some basketball offers, so I already knew I was going to do that. I was like, I'm gonna go out here and just start playing golf again. And, you know, I'm sure through the years I'd grabbed a club at some point, but, like, I had not gone out there to, like, hit a bucket of balls, you know? And so I was like, I'm gonna start playing golf. And I've been out there, like, a couple days, and he hadn't seen me doing it. And then he comes out there, and he's just standing in front of me. And he was an intimidating guy. He was my frame, but he was 6:1. He was just a big V and these big hands and just a bear of a man, and. And he's staring at me and he's really close to me, but he's not saying anything, and I'm just hitting. And he kind of stops me and stops my club and says, do you hear that? What do you mean? Do you hear the sound that's coming off of that club face? I'm like, I mean, yeah. He goes, well, that doesn't sound like anybody out here hitting balls. If you start practicing, you're gonna be really good at this game. I don't know what happened with your swing between now and when you were a kid, but it's perfect playing now. I don't know how that happened. So I became a psychopath. I didn't love the game. I had no love.

[Bobby Bones]

You love your dad giving you affirmation?

[Kip Moore]

It was like, I'm about to go be the best golfer there is now. Yeah, now. You know, I wasn't that, but. But by the end of the summer, I was shooting in the 60s, and it was like, you know, I just. I was there the minute the sun was up. I was there hitting balls, and I would hit balls for 10 hours a day.

[Bobby Bones]

That's an excellent story.

[Kip Moore]

Yeah.

Oh, my gosh. Yeah.

Can you tell me about one more song, Sober?

[Kip Moore]

Sober, I wrote with the band over at my house. And that was all just, like, a lot of times, there's a very intentional. Like, the darkness. That's very intentional. Faith in the Wind was very intentional. Where I'm at, I know what I'm going to say. I just got to figure out how to get there. Sober was like, Heart's Desire was written where I'll do this, where that was all off a riff that Dave Nassi was playing. Done it, and I'm just trying to. Where is that putting me right now? And I just started spit firing, and I can remember that. I can remember the lyric for the whole verse. Hit me in a matter of about 30 seconds where I just kind of. It's kind of like scatting, you know, I'm just scatting out, and you're grabbing on the phrases and words, and. And it was. That was all just an emote of like, how does this feel? Where sometimes I'm not even sure what I'm saying or where I'm trying to get to. But then once I kind of say a few things, I'm like, okay, now the writer comes out at me where I'm writing to this. This thought concept and this hook.

Yeah, it's pretty cool to hear the process, you're just building a melody, catching words that. That matter and building off those words that matter with the melody. You've also been building through none. Not really words.

[Kip Moore]

Yeah. Especially when you don't. Like I said, when you don't have a map. Like, the minute I sat outside and was like, I guess the darkness just likes me too much, I knew exactly where I'm going. I know exactly where the map is, and I've got a direct thing I want to say. But a lot of times I'm just scatting around. I've got probably 2,000 voice messages on my phone where I'm just scatting on melodies and stuff. And then I'll pull from certain things of, oh, I like what I'm saying here. And then I put myself back in the place where I know that story.

[Bobby Bones]

It's been a long time, but I think that early in my career, I might get a little bit of that, for sure, like in meet and greets. But it's been a long time since anybody's done it, Bobby,

because, you know, you need a little beer money.

I went about 2, 3 years without playing hey, pretty girl.

Oh, yeah. And now I love playing third row. CHEERING I'm in the back now.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And now I love playing it again. It's just kind of. Sometimes I get disconnected from something and, you know, sonically, whatever, and. And I just don't play it. And then I. And then I'm kind of like, oh, man. I just randomly played it one night because there was all these signs at this place. I was doing it, and I said, you know what? The heck with it. I'll play it tonight, probably in three years. And then I've played it, you know, probably 50% of the time since I did that a couple years ago.

I did. I did. But I still live really simple, Eddie. I really do, man. I did. I finally. I built. I built a home that I always wanted to build. Once again, it goes back to.

You built it yourself.

No, I did not do that.

I'm glad you asked because I thought he had built like some Aztec hut in a field somewhere. I give.

I give props to Michael Kahn for that. No, I just. I always wanted to live on the marsh. And maybe it goes back to my dad. I can remember he'd take us flats fishing, and we would drive through the channels and we'd see the houses. Just the little fish shacks on stilts in Keaton beach when you're going out. Just the super like. Like little one story houses. He'd be like, man, one day, one day, that's how I want to live. And the dude died before I can make it happen, you know? But I. And it makes me so mad sometimes because I would tell myself in my head, I'm going to figure out a way to make that happen. Even as a kid, I was like, I'm going to figure out a way to make that happen. Because he works so hard. The guy put in 70 hours a week. My whole, you know, life as a kid, you know, it was crazy watching how hard he worked. So then I built a house on the marsh and on the. On the east coast, and. But as far as the rest of my life, man, I live really, really, really simple. And that'll pay off for me when I walk away from this thing.
