So what were your main things that you're trying to go for? Obviously you want money, but then, like, what else are like the things, what are the deal points that matter to you?

The money really? The advance, like, wasn't important to, you

know, you have to pay that back.

Yeah, I wanted more points on my album, Less points for them, less percentage on merch for them, less percentage on touring for them. I had an entire page or two pages in the contract where anything I put out later that is not music related, like fashion lines or motorcycle lines or anything, they don't get to license my name. Anything that's put out with my face or my name, I have to approve. So even if I die, they can't put out a greatest hits album because they wouldn't have my approval.

How did you know how to be that smart? Because I'm guessing you're probably like in your 20s when you got these offers.

[Cassie Ashton]

I was 22.

I went to Belmont. I went to Belmont.

He was like, hey, this isn't a thing, but we're gonna make it a thing now. Like, the. The look and feel approval no matter what. That was his idea because he knew that I was picky.

So how'd you get so picky? How'd you get so confident? And how did you. Like, how'd you get like this? By the way, I'm, like, going to squirrel around here for a second because there's so many little trails I want to follow. I cannot. With your wedding and your husband and you guys. Well, first off, you're just like, just like the ultimate love story. Because you're like the woman who can't be got. You cannot. No one can get you. Your heart is so protected and like in your wedding vows. And you're saying it like. Like, my whole life I've had this like, giant. Or your husband said this about you?

Yeah.

Your whole life you've had, like, a giant metal gate around you.

He said one time we were dating for like, six months and we were drawing because he can draw, too, the inside of each other's brain. And he drew a planet that was filled with, like, fashion and motorcycles and music and food. And it had a 10 foot tall, barbed wire top prison fence around it. And I remember, like, seeing it and just like, bawling. And I. I knew. I was like, okay, I'm clearly marrying this guy. I'm gonna make him wait for like, a really long time. Because that's, you know, my own little thing.

What is that part about you? Why you gotta make him wait?

I think I just prove it.

No, it's not just prove it. It's in my brain. I just was constantly like, I have a career. I have a career. I have a career. And I was told that I couldn't have both. Like, it was.

So, at mom's house? I grew up in town, she's from Nashville, so she sings. My older sister sings. And it was just us three in the house.

Yeah. Same mom, different dads. And she, you know, covered in tattoos, 13 piercings, platinum blonde, four boyfriends at one time. Beauty pageants, ballet. I mean, everything that you can possibly. You are a star. You are a star. You are a star. My whole life. Theater. Mom said theater. Yeah. State theater. Competition, Competition.

Well, because I popped out the womb and I was like, I want to be a star. So then she was like, okay.

And then at my dad's house, you know, he lives out in the middle of nowhere. Our closest neighbors are Amish. I shot muzzleloaders competitively my whole life. Dirt bike loaders. Yeah. Like a black powder. Like a really old school gun.

I was all into my mom's side of it. Like, that's all I believed. I believed that I thought my hometown was. I thought, you know, everything besides big city lights and being a star was. Even though I was riding horses and doing all this other stuff at my dad's house, it was a really, like, convoluted thing. And then as I got older and started thinking for myself, I was like, wait a minute. But I am thankful for both halves of it because my dad wouldn't. I love him to death. He wouldn't have pushed me toward this and to be exactly who I wanted to be. Like, my mom did. Like, even though we don't speak, I would never not give her the credit that she's due for everything she did do for me and the way I was raised. And, like, if you're asking where I got the mentality, where I got the. No, I'm gonna get it done. I don't care. I don't care what you think. That's my mom.

And I'm looking at the seams and I'm like, do not buy this. Like, this is made like crap. Like, if that's what you want, I'll. I'll sew it for you. It'll cost like 500. $700 in fabric will be good. I knew that I wanted to make my own just because I like weird stuff and I'm so picky.

What was the theme of my dress? I love old world, deconstructed textural things. I want something I don't have to iron or be delicate with. I like things that look otherworldly instead of classic. And it started with this piece of guipier lace that the lady that I bought it from in Florida, she bought it at the Paris Textile Expo in the 90s. And it's like the most gorgeous piece of pearl fabric I've ever seen and just went from there. I watched my favorite ballet on film, like, over and over as I made it.

But if we have another artist's manager coming to us and saying they're gonna call the CEO and threaten our job if we don't get their thing done, I'm gonna do theirs first because my neck is on the line and I'm sitting there and I'm like, damn, I don't want it.

I don't want to do that and feel fun. I'm never gonna do that. Like, I'm not gonna threaten someone's job.

So then when we started writing the music for this album, it was just like that's what I had inside me of just. I've waited so long and I've been so patient and I've watched people be put in line, you know, ahead of me, ahead of me, ahead of me. I'm done.

And he's from Missouri, and I'm from Missouri, which I never would have thought I would find somebody from my home state. But he's. He's fabulous.

I think before Made from the Dirt, the first album came out, music was released so sparsely that there were a bunch of mini eras that did not always go together with a common thread.

If this is the only project I ever get to put out, I'm happy with it. There was a song about my grandma. It was really just like, Juanita. Yeah.

I think you just have to learn to love yourself and not care. And I know that's hard. It's easier said than done. But I think you. It also starts with, like, really asking yourself what you like. Because if you're following a trend and you know, whether it's makeup or clothes or body shape or. Or whatever, if you're following a trend but deep down, behind whatever societal thing that's been ingrained in you, if you don't find that cute, you're not going to feel good when you put it on. If you try to play dress up in someone else's clothes, you're never going to think you're hot. So I think it starts from, like, what do you like, find it? Yes. What do you think is cool? And as long as it always comes from there, it doesn't matter.

And I had four bridesmaids whose color palettes and body shapes are all different. I want them to feel beautiful. I don't want them to have to wear a corset or, like, you know, not be able to dance or their feet hurt or whatever. So I made Pinterest boards for each of them of shapes that fit my wedding. And then they could go in their Pinterest board and pick out their favorite pieces, like, and Then I would go, okay, what do you love about your body? What do you hate about your body? I want you. My only rules are I want you to be able to eat, dance, pee. Like this is supposed to be comfortable. And I want a lot of fabric because I think it's lush. You know it's not. I would rather you wear a gigantic moomoo because it's lovely than like a string, you know?

I'm waiting on the side of the building for the scooter company to come. And he comes like creeping around the back of this building waiting for you. And I go, hey, I thought you were going jet skiing. And he like looked at me and he was like, oh yeah, we, we, we, we just decided not to go. Like it's, it's pretty rough out there. Like, whatever. And I was like, all right, cool. Like I lost my key. I'm just waiting for or whatever. I didn't think anything about it. Come to find out a year later, no one was going jet skiing.

So let's say someone nudge past you in an elevator early in the morning and you think, oh, my God, that person is an asshole. Your brain will fill in the circle with the worst possibility to protect you. Because that's.

Your brain's job is to protect you. So it's gonna fill in with the worst scenario it can think of. Of. But if you're allowed to make up a bad story you are allowed to make up a good story. So if somebody cuts you off in traffic, you could think that person you honk, you know, whatever. Or you could think, what if their wife is giving birth right now and they're really trying to get there? And it's not so much giving people the benefit of the doubt, because selfishly, it's not about them. Them.
