Hey, everybody, welcome. Matt Castle. I'm Bobby Bones and we have Andrew east with us this week. Andrew, good to see you.
Andrew East
Good to be here.
Bobby Bones
I was watching your wife's Instagram stories. Weird sentence to say to another guy.
Matt Castle
Yeah, always. Bobby says that to me all the time.
Bobby Bones
It's a weird one. And you got. You guys were, I guess, on vacation, like on a boat.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
How are you? Still hitting it pretty hard. You're pretty ripped up, dude.
Andrew East
Oh, dude, I have dialed it back big time. But I do. I do enjoy fitness.
Bobby Bones
Are you kidding?
Andrew East
I like to compete.
Matt Castle
So you're really checking out his body?
Andrew East
My wife's. There's a lot going on.
Matt Castle
She's just getting really intimate. Really Quick. Welcome to the show.
Bobby Bones
I was like, when I see Andrew, I'm gonna tell him he's ripped. He's still got it.
Andrew East
He's doing a shirtless pod.
Matt Castle
What kind of. Yeah, no, no, I'm not doing a shirtless pod. What kind of swim shorts was he wearing?
Bobby Bones
I'm colorblind. Anyway, so even if you guys do like a pontoon boat or what, we
Andrew East
went down to Key west, which I'd never been to. We had the best time because they got sandbars everywhere and they're like a foot and a half deep. And we have a two year old. And so it's like he's in the pool slash on the beach at the same time. And it was a 25 foot boat. I think we had 20 people on there. It's a vibe.
Bobby Bones
20 people.
Andrew East
Oh, yeah, yeah. I got four siblings. There's 11 kids also.
Bobby Bones
The whole family went down.
Andrew East
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's fun.
Matt Castle
You're one of five.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Andrew East
Middle of five.
Matt Castle
Middle of five, yeah.
Andrew East
I'm the worst athlete in my family too. Marriage included, kids included. Worst athlete.
Podcast Announcer
Dude.
Andrew East
It's crazy.
Bobby Bones
Your brothers and sisters were good athletes.
Andrew East
Oldest brother was an Olympic cyclist. That's how Sean and I met. Second oldest was like a freak college football player. Like literally twice as strong as I was. He did 35 reps at 225 at the 35. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Dude.
Andrew East
And I. Yeah, that's a ton of reps.
Bobby Bones
I'm familiar with the combine.
Andrew East
It's like, I know you don't direct my attention to Matt because I don't think you know about the combine. And 225 pounds on.
Bobby Bones
Okay. And. And each one of them weighs 45 pounds each plate.
Andrew East
You know, what do you think?
Bobby Bones
Where do you play college football?
Andrew East
You're Wheaton College in Chicago. And then he's a CrossFit Games athlete.
Bobby Bones
And he does CrossFit Games.
Andrew East
Oh, yeah.
Bobby Bones
Okay, so then there's you. And then you have two younger.
Andrew East
Yeah, college football player at Purdue and then my sister played softball. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Oh, my gosh.
Matt Castle
Did you. So did you guys grow up as a sports family? Obviously. Were you pushed into it? Did your parents influence you?
Andrew East
No, it was funny. We all just kind of loved it. My dad did play football at Purdue. He was a tight end and long snapper there. By the way, I saw you were a punter in high school. You got a little specialist in you.
Bobby Bones
Hey, he punted in the NFL.
Matt Castle
I know.
Bobby Bones
Did you? It was yes or no?
Matt Castle
I did have a punt. I had One punt and was it awesome? It was awesome, dude. Let's go. It was a quick kick. So you know the third down situation. We're backed up. Bad weather game, Buffalo winds blowing like 60 miles an hour behind my back. Coach calls it in. I didn't believe him at first, and I looked over and told him to repeat the play, and he literally screams at me. Castle getting huddle. We're going trips right, gap left. Quick kick. And I was. So I tell these guys, we practiced this for four years. So Copenhagen yelling at me in my center. Move up, Castle. So I move up. I grab this ball as quickly as I possibly could. I kick it. It goes maybe 25 yards, but they were. They're in shell coverage, right? It's third down. The ball hits and the wind is so going like 60 miles an hour. Takes it down to the one yard line. It's like 60 yard punt.
Podcast Announcer
Wow.
Matt Castle
It is.
Bobby Bones
It's legendary on social media. Like about once a month I get refed the Matt Castle, the punter clip, and we relive it in here. It is.
Matt Castle
It is. We have talked about it a few times. It is epic.
Bobby Bones
Your sister played softball? Yeah.
Matt Castle
Where?
Andrew East
Yeah, yeah, she just did it in high school, and then she got a knee injury and that was that.
Bobby Bones
So we were talking a minute ago. I asked him how many surgeries he had, and he didn't give me a number. He started counting out. Well, I had one here, two here, three here. What do we ever get to?
Matt Castle
I think we're at six or seven.
Bobby Bones
You?
Andrew East
Yeah, zero. Really? Zero. I mean, I played long snapper most of the time, so I don't even know if it's considered football at that point.
Matt Castle
But you're compromised, dude. Those big guys up front, you. You are literally looking through your legs and snapping the ball and just getting manhandled.
Andrew East
My first NFL play was against Calias Campbell. Do you know who this is, dude? He's six foot eight. He's like 340 pounds. One of the largest humans I've legitimately ever seen in my life. And I think he runs like a sub 540, which is bonkers for his size. And I, like, I'm getting settled in, in the whole stance, and I look up, I was like, oh, my gosh. I. I don't know how my. How long my NFL career is going to be. I don't. I don't think I belong.
Bobby Bones
Were you not protected then? Is this pretty NFL?
Andrew East
They have to kind of offset a little bit.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, but not.
Andrew East
But they'll Rush you? Yeah, I literally snap the ball. He comes my way and I, I was like so much smaller than he was. My hands were on his hips and I was like, this is weird. I don't know, it's crazy. All different game.
Matt Castle
He's so massive. He's also still playing. It's like his 18th season as a defensive tackle. Yeah, it's crazy.
Andrew East
Great dude too.
Bobby Bones
Well, if you just have to take up space, how hard can it be? Hut.
Andrew East
It's hard.
Bobby Bones
Lift up your hand.
Matt Castle
Get out of my way, boy.
Bobby Bones
I have to imagine though you did that you didn't always snap.
Andrew East
I played linebacker until my third year at Vandy. I was pretty good.
Bobby Bones
You played linebacker at Vandy?
Andrew East
Yeah, I mean I wasn't like the, the starter guy but I was like, I was pretty good, like spring game stuff, you know. But we had, I had four coaches in five years there and so by the time we got our third coach, he was like, hey, we need a long snapper, you're our guy and you're not going to play linebacker anymore. So that was that.
Bobby Bones
Had you snapped though, prior to.
Andrew East
I was like the second or third string guy and that was like I was like a good enough linebacker to get recruit. That's why they recruited me. And then the long snapping was like a cherry on top. Got me the scholarship and it worked out. This was back before special teams now is such a, it's like truly specialized. All these guys.
Matt Castle
No doubt.
Andrew East
It's a whole system in and of itself.
Matt Castle
There are camps for high school kids just to do long snapping.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Matt Castle
I mean you always knew that Matt
Bobby Bones
Overton like has them and Matt, Matt interned for me for a while while he was playing in the NFL.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Like after a season he said I gotta learn something else. Moved down here and interned, then went back to play and he. That, that's my snapping experience is like hanging out with Overton. Yeah. And he has camps and he has 30 kids that come out to his camps.
Andrew East
They'll fly all over the, like from all over the country and come train, dude. Overton's career was like really impressive. He played with the Colts and then he, and then second half back in
Bobby Bones
like minimal, like veteran minimum and he's getting called back in to play with the Chargers, with the Cowboys. We went down to see him with the Cowboys, Jaguars just one after. He's like, I'm done, I, I'm retired.
Matt Castle
No, I'm going back. No. That paycheck keeps you, keeps you coming back.
Bobby Bones
There's no doubt, is there? Just A limited number of dependable snappers.
Andrew East
Here's the thing. It's like, you know this as good as anybody, Matt. Like, if you're a coach, the last thing you want to be thinking about is the long snapper. And so if you have a guy who's on the streets, your long snapper gets hurt. You have a guy on the streets like Matt, who you have film after film of just being steady, independent. He's probably going to be your top guy in the list to call. And there's probably. I mean, if there's 32 teams, 32 long snappers, there's probably 20 who are kind of in the pool of people getting tryouts and everything. But it's like you just got to. There's so many different things that go into it. And I remember, try it after tryout for me, I was like, oh, this can be my break. And then like, I would get an opportunity to have to decide between going to the Chargers, the Cardinals. I was like, okay, sweet.
Matt Castle
Let's.
Andrew East
Let's sign with the Chargers in the off season and then shoot. The Cardinals guy got hurt and that would been a better opportunity. And you're like, dang. So there's like a little bit of luck, a little bit of like, how do you vibe with the coach, the system, the whole thing.
Bobby Bones
And yeah, he got signed by the Cowboys because I, I didn't know him until he came in, intern for my show. And I just thought, this guy, like, he's on. He knows his career is not going to last forever and he wants to learn other skills. So I thought that was super cool.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And so that's when we got to know him really well and we stayed close. He said, I got. The Cowboys just called. And so my buddies are big Cowboys fans. I'm not, but they are massive Cowboys fans. So I'm watching the game. His first snap, going right over the center. First Overton. First snap, over the guy's head. No, bad snap. First one, no way. We were like, oh, my God.
Matt Castle
Now that's the worst case scenario, by the way.
Bobby Bones
There was never another bad one after that. But his first one was a bad. I don't know what you guys call it.
Matt Castle
Bad snap.
Bobby Bones
Like, I guess a botch would be a hole, but a bad snap. What was the first one?
Matt Castle
Gosh, dude, when you talk about the scheme, that's always. I had the question about this. So you play for multiple teams. You go in, everybody has their special team coordinator. But for your specific position, did the scheme really matter that much or Was it? Look, I got to get the ball to where I got to get the ball, whether it's to the holder, to the punter and I don't have to worry too much about what's going on in terms of scheme. Yeah.
Andrew East
So there would be more aggressive special teams. Coaches like Bobby Fossil, we call him, or Jones, John Fossil, you know, Bones. Bones, yeah. There's a legend.
Bobby Bones
You know, I've held a football before once or twice.
Matt Castle
Hey, this guy was, he was big time in high school.
Bobby Bones
I mean I've touched the old pig skin a couple of times, so.
Andrew East
So yeah, but Anyway, go ahead.
Matt Castle
225 by the way.
Andrew East
Yeah, yeah, he was always like, he was always pushing the limits as far as like trick plays and everything. He always had it dialed up, which was fun. So that in that way it varies. Field goals are pretty, pretty run of the mill, like vanilla. It won't vary too much. The Raiders, when I was out there, they were always like trying to do some trick plays and some people are more conservative. But then one of the big things is like do you do a tight formation or more of a spread out and there's pros and cons to both. And Kansas City, which is the first team that I signed with, I think I was a couple years right after you, that was like a tight formation which would have been so much better for me had I not helped me with Kaleis. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Because you have your, your guard right on your hip like literally touching you as opposed to two yards away like we did in other teams. And just from a protection standpoint, as I'm trying to snap and block and do both really well and consistent, that can make a difference. But then from a coverage standpoint, going down to cover the ball, it makes it a little more difficult.
Bobby Bones
So in the NFL, did you guys ever have swinging gate or did you guys kind of retire that in high school?
Andrew East
The swinging gate, dude. But the swinging gate. Yeah, we did it in college bride like a 40 yard reception.
Matt Castle
Oh you really.
Andrew East
Oh yeah, it was Georgia it.
Bobby Bones
I hate having to guard the frickin swinging gate because you would see it on film. They did it one time three years ago and God dang if they didn't do it. This game is so you're like running, trying. Oh my God, who's got who? I hated the swinging gate. Oh, so you caught a four yard
Andrew East
touchdown or a pass Georgia. And then I had, I had a two point conversion, maybe two of them at Vandy, which was always fun.
Bobby Bones
Would you guys do that? Somewhat common. Then did you guys. Some people would hop in a swinging gate and then never use it. So they would see if you'd line up right and then go back. Right.
Matt Castle
And then condense formation back.
Andrew East
Yeah, I mean, that's. That's always like, the ball. The courage of your special teams coordinator, our guy was, hey, we got nothing to lose. We got a chance to be Georgia. Let's go run this thing. And you're like, shoot, I gotta go.
Bobby Bones
Okay, let's go, baby.
Podcast Announcer
Here we go.
Bobby Bones
Game time.
Matt Castle
So scary. When you first transitioned to long snapper, was that something that was intimidating for you when you, like. Because obviously, if you do your job well, nobody ever talks about you and that's what you want, dude. It.
Andrew East
I loved playing linebacker. I love football, dude. Ever since I was a kid, like, all I want to do is play football. Linebacker, to me was like the definition of peak football. I was a little sad when I transitioned out of linebacker and just focused on long snapping. It ended up being a really fun process of, like, really trying to master that craft and just like, say, okay, I'm gonna be the most consistent person out there. And I think I did a decent job at accomplishing that. I'll never forget Adam Vittateri. Did you play with him in New England?
Matt Castle
Oh, yeah, I did.
Andrew East
Legend. You remember this guy? That kid? Dude, he probably played for 20 years.
Matt Castle
20 years, dude.
Andrew East
Patriots for a long time. Colts. I got a Colts four.
Matt Castle
Four time super bowl winner.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And you got the most famous kick in the history of kicks, other than Tolus Joe from the 60s.
Matt Castle
Yeah, that's true, man.
Andrew East
It's true. You're just dropping all these, like, the. The football knowledge.
Matt Castle
I love it. It's like,
Andrew East
oh, it's so good. But. But Vinateri did a Colts minicam and he was like, dude, those are the. The best short snaps I've ever seen in my life. And I was like, I made it. I'm good. Like, mission accomplished as far. But it was intimidating. It was not ever a problem or intimidating until I got to the pros. And then for whatever reason, like, just focusing, like, all you did was sit around and practice and, like, you'd warm up for your 5 minute window of time in practice to, like, have to nail it. And I just couldn't deal with that for the first two, three years of my career. So then I had to, like, kind of acclimate to that, which was a whole different animal.
Matt Castle
But yeah, I was gonna say, what do you guys do all day? I mean. Cause we're in meetings. I'm sitting there, I'm breaking down these elaborate defense is like, oh, there's a 22, man. Let's look at this blitz package. Let's do this. And then I always would come in the locker room.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Matt Castle
Right before we go to practice. You guys are already in there just kind of hanging out, getting ready to go take your. Like, you said five snaps. And I'm like, but then where do you go during practice?
Andrew East
Do you want the honest answer or the politically question?
Matt Castle
Yes, I want the honest.
Andrew East
Dude. We would. We would practice for, like, in Washington. We'd practice maybe for like 30, 45 minutes, and then we'd go in the locker room and play ping pong for about two and a half hours. Dude. And we would. Dude, we got so good at pong. Oh, man, I still would love to challenge you to a game of ping pong.
Matt Castle
You probably beat me. You probably beat me. Yeah, I was always wondering that. I'm just like, these guys have so much free time. I'm like, do they even have to watch film? Because you have to execute your play right. You probably do in terms of punt. Right. Punt coverage and all that.
Andrew East
Not the same way you guys do. Not the same way.
Bobby Bones
Did you ball in high school, though?
Andrew East
You know, I was not like a dominant. I was pretty good. I was pretty good on a bad high school team.
Matt Castle
Don't be modest. And you were the greatest.
Bobby Bones
He sound like Castle. Especially with the Chiefs. He's pretty good on a bad team.
Andrew East
Dang.
Bobby Bones
Is that not true? Yeah, the first year.
Matt Castle
First year, we were. We were real bad team. Yeah. Yeah, we were real bad.
Bobby Bones
Don't be assaulted for them. It's the truth.
Podcast Announcer
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Go ahead.
Andrew East
2012. Is that your first or last year?
Matt Castle
Oh, my last year was 2018. Oh, you're saying with Chiefs? 2012.
Andrew East
Okay, nice.
Matt Castle
You came in when?
Andrew East
2014 was my rookie year. Dustin Colquitt was still out there, a character.
Matt Castle
Jeez, man, you talk about somebody that can make anybody laugh, but the pranks that you'd pull and all the stuff that he'd do. Nuts.
Andrew East
By the way, I was refreshing myself on Matt's resume here. Football wise, Legendary.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I know. It's actually really good. Until he got hurt and people don't give him the credit he deserves, especially in the NFL. He was good, but the second year, he made the Pro Bowl.
Andrew East
That's insane. That is so well done.
Matt Castle
Thanks.
Andrew East
But wait, is it truly? How many college games did you start as a quarterback?
Matt Castle
Zero.
Andrew East
That's crazy, dude.
Bobby Bones
Also Quit. Also quit and played baseball, bro. I played college baseball.
Andrew East
I'm just gonna go play ball.
Matt Castle
Well, that was just to get out of spring. I mean, you talk about somebo. I was down in the dumps. I was sitting there going, oh, God, I've got to go watch line art go through spring ball.
Andrew East
No. 2 Heisman Trophy winners.
Matt Castle
You were buying two of them. How about. How about the first? So two Heisman. I played with three Heisman Trophy winners in college my first two years.
Bobby Bones
Reggie Bush.
Matt Castle
Reggie Bush.
Bobby Bones
And then Palmer. And then Palmer and lineart.
Matt Castle
Line art. And then I get to the league. I play with Doug Flutie, Heisman Trophy winner, second year.
Andrew East
Wow.
Matt Castle
Brewing in halfway through the year. Vinny Tessaverde, Heisman Trophy winner. Played with like six heisa. Derrick Henry.
Andrew East
That's amazing.
Matt Castle
Six. Played with like six Heisman Trophy winners.
Andrew East
Wow.
Bobby Bones
They also put him at tight end in college.
Andrew East
I was looking there.
Bobby Bones
He's like.
Andrew East
He played some tight end. He played some. Was it like, wide receiver?
Matt Castle
Yes. I did play a little wide receiver in my freshman year. Caught a few balls there too. Yeah. So funny.
Andrew East
Just out here grinding.
Matt Castle
The more you can do, babe, the more you can do. Hopefully somebody will give you a shot someday.
Bobby Bones
Where'd you grow up?
Andrew East
Indianapolis.
Bobby Bones
So how'd you end up at Vanderbilt?
Andrew East
Okay, so my high school team was bad in a really good conference. Warren Central is in my conference. Carmel High School is a big one up there. Ben Davis. I think when I was playing there, we were the. We were the second best conference in the country. I'm just saying, Indiana football doesn't give the credit it deserves. Everyone talks about California and Texas and Florida. Indiana is like the real deal. So I had zero scholarship offers. My coach in high school held all the letters. Like he. He was not. Unless we were a successful team. He wouldn't let you, like, do the recruiting thing. And he was like. Yeah, it was like this whole gimmick game and whatever side story. I come down to Vandy, and there's a coach, Warren Beelin there who loved me as a linebacker. And we had this. I was at the summer camp, and he was like, east, if you run under 4 7, we'll give you a scholarship. So I went out there, dude, I was like, just give it every. I was trying to juice every little ounce out, and I did it. So Vandy gave me a scholarship.
Matt Castle
So you ran a four, six.
Andrew East
I ran a four, six, five that day, I think.
Matt Castle
Four six.
Andrew East
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I should balance that off. Yeah, I should. I should work on that. But Vandy was the only school to give me offer, so I came. I didn't know anything about Vandy. Came down here, went to and 10 our first season. How hard is that to go back, have two intense season? Oh, I'll never forget. You never experienced this at usc. Our last game was against Wake Forest. It's like whatever, late November, freezing cold. We're terrible. Wake Forest was bad. They beat us by 40. But in the stands, literally there's probably 250 people. And it was just. The whole season was just like a letdown where nobody's bought in. The coaches didn't care. Like there was no challenge to it, you know, and you're used to kind of like pushing the limit. You want to, you want to be good. You want to, you want to be outside your comfort zone and push yourself to the limit to be good. And there was just none of that. There was no push, there was no good. It was just let down.
Bobby Bones
Is that culture?
Andrew East
100%. 100%. The next year we went 6 and
Bobby Bones
7 with James Franklin.
Andrew East
James Franklin came. That was a huge success, massive. And it was like different tone from the get go.
Bobby Bones
Did you feel it immediately?
Andrew East
So again, I had four coaches, five years. It was so interesting to see how they each approached like their first introduction to the team. I got to Vandy. Bobby Johnson retired, just deuced out in July. Oh my God. Right before the season, which is crazy. Coach Franklin comes. And our first time with the coaching staff was a 4am workout in the basketball gym. Dude, we had never done a workout that hard. There was so many people throwing up all over the gym. And it was like, okay, you're either gonna buy in and be here and put up with this or like we'll will help transition you away. And then the third coach, or, sorry, the fourth coach came and he was like, hey, good to meet you. We're gonna give you like six weeks off. And it was like such a different. As opposed to coming in and laying down the hammer. It was like, hey, let's be nice and friendly. We'll take it easy. And we were not as successful my last year as well. So yeah, I think it's totally cultured. It's totally expectations. It's like, I think there's, there's a little bit of like, I don't want to say delusional confidence, but I love the story of like Pavia, what he did with Alabama. It's like you, you have to first believe, you have to have that, that confidence. Whether it's delusional or based off of reality of like, we can be better, we can be good, we can beat Alabama, we can go to a bowl game. And then you kind of start, I think, reverse engineering what that looks like in your brain. And if you just have one person come with that type of belief, it can, I think, ripple effect into the whole locker room very quickly.
Matt Castle
But there's been a lot of pride now with Vandy being as good as they've been these last few years. And Clark Lee's done there and just transformed what people viewed as Vanderbilt football.
Andrew East
Yeah, 100%. It's so fun. I mean, there's so much momentum behind all of vanity athletics. Candice is doing a great job as an AD over there, but it's like a totally different experience now where you're like, okay, sweet. We got a little respect now. And I'm excited to see what they do this year, but what a great couple of years.
Bobby Bones
You say Arkansas, like, Arkansas finally gets to play Vanderbilt. And they're good. Like, all the years we did, we're just begging to play Vanderbilt. We never play them. And now we come here next year and they're good. And I love Coach Lee. Like, I've spent a lot of time with him. He's come out to my show. He's. I love that, dude.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
But it would be Vanderbilt at the bottom. Kentucky. Arkansas will be flirting, but it's just us where it's. It. Kentucky's got Will Stein. I know Vanderbilt.
Matt Castle
They're gonna be better.
Andrew East
Yeah, dude. I think Vandy's gonna be a huge beneficiary of the whole nil setup. Like, there's no reason not to come.
Matt Castle
So much money at that school. There's alumni and everybody. I'm like, dude, now they're gonna start actually chipping in because they've got a winner and they're gonna be.
Bobby Bones
Are you. Are you giving money?
Matt Castle
You give money? Huh?
Andrew East
No, I. Bogus one. You do To Vandy. Arkansas.
Matt Castle
God, no.
Andrew East
Never to.
Bobby Bones
They don't need V. Doesn't need my money. I give it to Arkansas.
Andrew East
Gosh, I. I know it's been 150 years of bad Vanderbilt football, but I think those days are behind us, dude. I'm just saying it's a new era.
Bobby Bones
What's great about it is that Coach Lee went to school here. He wants to be here. A lot of folks have used that job, if done well, as a stepping stone to get somewhere else. I mean, look at Coach Franklin when he left. Clark Lee's not doing that. He could have left. You know, when he came down from Notre Dame, he was defensive coordinator up there. It was okay, guy that played here is coming back home. Let's see. He was hot, you know, coming out of Notre Dame, and he could have left twice. And he hasn't left. He's not leaving.
Andrew East
Do you feel like Arkansas is a stepping stone job now?
Bobby Bones
Arkansas has never been a stepping stone job. I think now it's a job.
Matt Castle
You go there to die.
Bobby Bones
You go to die. Yeah. You go to die.
Matt Castle
Fayetteville's a beautiful place.
Bobby Bones
It's awesome. We got a house right by the stadium. It's the greatest thing ever. It's my favorite, other than my family and possibly my. It's my favorite thing in the whole world. And it just. It's.
Matt Castle
I.
Bobby Bones
It's so disheartening.
Andrew East
Dude. The most absurd experience pre game I've had is playing at Arkansas is Ryan Mallet, who is a good 6 foot 8 gunslinger cannon.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Started in Michigan, like right here in Camden, Arkansas.
Podcast Announcer
Yeah.
Andrew East
She's out there pregame. And they bring out the pig, and it's Tusk.
Bobby Bones
Let's have respect. Put respect on Tusk's name.
Andrew East
Yeah, Huge dude is.
Bobby Bones
But he doesn't do anything.
Andrew East
He just sits in the kitchen.
Bobby Bones
What do you mean it's alive? It's a tusk.
Andrew East
It's like.
Bobby Bones
Do you think people said about Bevo, when he comes out, they're like, he doesn't do anything. He's got big horns. What does Vanderbilt bring out somebody? A cap and gown.
Matt Castle
They need to run it around like
Andrew East
they do the buffaloes.
Bobby Bones
Huge pig. Pig with horn. It's a no.
Andrew East
But he kind of looks sad. He's in the cage kind of looking sad at you.
Matt Castle
Oh, he's just in the cage.
Bobby Bones
Well, you know why he's sad? Yeah. It's not even because he's a pig.
Matt Castle
Gosh, what a grand.
Bobby Bones
It's awful. I've never spent more money on something. It's been so upset. And I just keep pumping money into it, thinking it's gonna someday it's gonna change. Oh, my God.
Matt Castle
So good.
Andrew East
Would you rather get 100 grand to go play in Fayetteville or 50 grand to play in Nashville, Tennessee, if you're a player.
Bobby Bones
Well, what year?
Andrew East
Right now?
Matt Castle
Right now, 20.
Andrew East
26.
Bobby Bones
But I'm me, so I'm going to Fayetteville for a nickel.
Matt Castle
Okay. Switch up the school.
Bobby Bones
Okay. Yeah.
Andrew East
Let's call it.
Matt Castle
It's a recruiting. It's a recruiting question.
Bobby Bones
You're asking a bias. I'm a very biased person.
Matt Castle
What's another school that you respect in the sec?
Bobby Bones
Let's see. Hey, Texas.
Matt Castle
That's why I didn't use them.
Bobby Bones
Bama. Get over it. I like teams like I would. I like Vanderbilt and I like Kentucky because they were always below us.
Matt Castle
That's.
Bobby Bones
I mean, Ole Miss, you know.
Matt Castle
Okay, so Kentucky, you get offered $100,000 to go there or 50,000.
Bobby Bones
They have no football culture. We might not be good right now. We have just at least a little bit of football culture. Don't look at me like we don't. We have a little bit.
Podcast Announcer
We've.
Bobby Bones
We've been to the SEC championship game. We've go to bowling.
Matt Castle
80s.
Bobby Bones
No, no, no.
Andrew East
We played Chris Leak.
Bobby Bones
Chris Leak and Tebow in Florida. We went sweet in Atlanta. Yeah, I did that. But we've, you know, we've 98. We were a game away from the national championship.
Matt Castle
We opened up Pandora's box here.
Bobby Bones
No, it's stupid. Whatever, man. Good to see Andrew.
Podcast Announcer
Bye.
Matt Castle
It's been a great interview.
Bobby Bones
He's got a book. Read it if you want.
Matt Castle
Struck a chord.
Bobby Bones
Oh, man, I love it up there. I'm just very frustrated if you can't tell. And here's the bad thing that I did is I started spending a lot of money and it makes you angrier when it seems like the ship continues to sink. So don't give money is my point, because you'll just get angry.
Andrew East
Sounds you guys could use some of that delusional confidence that we were talking about.
Bobby Bones
I have plenty myself. They have. I don't know what they have. So anyway, enough. Enough about us. Just keep pumping.

new drinks are now at McDonald's with
Bobby Bones
refreshers like the Strawberry Watermelon Refresher and the Mango Pineapple Refresher with.
Andrew East
With popping Boba. To crafted sodas like the Sprite Berry Blast with berry flavors and cold foam. Who knew ice cold drinks could be so fire six?
Matt Castle
All new drinks are here now at McDonald's.
Bobby Bones
Refreshers contain caffeine. You have a book called the Courage to Commit, and I've read almost all of it now because when your wife came in, I think she was surprised that I read the book, and I was just, like, quoting stuff to her. She's like, you read it? I was like, well, I can read. I think he doesn't know I know football. And she didn't think I could read. So I think they.
Matt Castle
You're sure that wasn't books on tape? Are you sure that wasn't books on tape?
Bobby Bones
And I was watching you guys do a book tour, and I've done those a couple times. You guys were killing it. It is a grind.
Andrew East
Oh, yeah, it is.
Bobby Bones
And you get asked the same things over and over again. How was that experience at promoting a book? Because that is a monster itself.
Andrew East
Yeah, we loved writing it. I mean, we got to talk about a lot of things. Just like you saying you invested in Arkansas, and then you're, like, more emotionally invested as well. It's like there's a little bit of that in there where it's. It's whatever you give your time and attention and money to, you'll. You'll have more buy into that thing. So whether that's your family, like, the more time you spend with the family, the higher in the. The more like, you just have natural draw to it, you know, I'm saying, like, that that's more up your priorities pyramid, if you will. But the. The tour, we love the writing. We did not like the tour. It's just like we did. We were doing 30 podcasts a week, and. And then everything else goes by the wayside. Like, you're trying to just do your normal home tasks, and it's like, oh, we got a podcast in five minutes. I love doing podcasts. You know what I'm saying? But not 30 in a week.
Bobby Bones
It gets blurry. You don't even know. You don't even know if you've repeated a story.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Because you're doing so many. You want. Oh, already tell this story in this. This interview?
Andrew East
Yeah. There's hard to work out there.
Matt Castle
Don't get me wrong.
Andrew East
But it's just like a. It's a weird experience, for sure.
Matt Castle
You kind of have to repeat, though, your stories. If you're telling.
Bobby Bones
You don't even know if you've said this one in this interview or not because you've done so many.
Matt Castle
Oh, you're saying that you forgetful about. Wait, did I say what I wanted to say? Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Everything just starts to, like, mold together.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Congratulations on the success of the book. It's awesome.
Andrew East
Appreciate it.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Andrew East
It's a fun ride.
Matt Castle
It's good. How long did it take you guys to write?
Andrew East
Was about three and a half years. It took us a while.
Matt Castle
Three and a half years?
Andrew East
Yeah. It's like.
Matt Castle
No, that's commitment.
Andrew East
Did you do it with a publisher or no.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Andrew East
Yeah. It's like there's this manuscript was done a year before it came out, and you have to make all these, like, tweaks and edits to it. And then you have to choose a cover, which takes too long and choose the title, which takes a long time. But. But coming up with the concept took a long time to drill in, so.
Podcast Announcer
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Did you ever want to coach?
Andrew East
Never, dude.
Bobby Bones
So when you finished never, you didn't have a need to get back into it in any way.
Andrew East
I think very quickly, when you go to college, you realize those coaches are there, I don't know, 18 hours a day.
Matt Castle
So long.
Andrew East
It's a whole, like, you have to love that thing, you know? And then you're putting in maybe a decade to get to a coordinator or head coach job. I feel like. Am I wrong?
Matt Castle
I mean, no, it's a long time. You got to pay your dues. And even if you even previous players that played the game and they think that they know. But coaching's such a different aspect of how you teach, how you put it on the board. The stuff that you have to get prepared, so you have to know all those different elements.
Andrew East
Yeah. The coaches I had have impacted my life in massive ways. I'm so grateful for them. I do not envy what they do at all. Yeah. Did you ever think about coaching?
Matt Castle
I thought about it and I think I would enjoy it. But then the aspect of, like you said, when you go in your committed to coaching, you're not going to see your family.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Matt Castle
And then you're at the mercy of job security because if the head coach gets fired now you're looking to the next city. You're not staying in your present city with kids. At least mine. I've got Five from sophomore all the way down to third grade or junior down to third grade, and you're sitting there going, how can I disrupt what they've built in terms of friends and all that? And so that always was really difficult for me because I do think that I would enjoy the camaraderie. Yeah, I used to love getting on the board and. And watching the film and trying to figure out the problem or who we can take advantage of. That was part of the job, but the other part of the hours and being away from my family, it wouldn't be. It'd be completely unfair.
Andrew East
Yeah, you got to do it for the love of it. And I don't love it like that.
Bobby Bones
Did you have a story in your book that. That people. It resonated with people more than you thought, and it kept being brought up to you, and you're like, oh, this is the one that people kind of have. Have drawn, you know, gravitated to.
Andrew East
Oh, dude. I mean, the book is pretty much like, hey, this is everything that you do right, and that's what Sean did. And then here's how you. You could do it wrong, which is what I did. Like, I mean, so I signed with the Redskins, got my first season in my belt, and then at that point, I was five years in and bounced around everywhere. And we had started doing podcasts and YouTube, and I, like, fell in love with that. And so that became my main focus in football, was, like, just what I was making videos about, pretty much. And so the day before. This is a story that everyone seems to talk about. The day before I showed up to, like, the first day of OTAs, I ran the Boston Marathon, and it was, like, for this whole. It was like this whole charity thing, and it was awesome. Memorable. But to train for a marathon, obviously, the lighter you are, the better you can run. And I had to show up on LTAs at, like, £245, so I, like, couldn't do the long runs. I sacrificed the training for the marathon like I should have because of football, and I sacrificed football for the marathon. I was caught between this limbo. That's just not the right way to go about, you know, trying to pursue an NFL career.
Matt Castle
So at that point, correct me if I'm wrong, were you checked out? You went and ran a marathon right before ota?
Andrew East
Literally the day before, dude. And we did a hamstring text test, dude. I was cribbing. I was all messed up. The punter looked at me. He was like, east, this isn't for you, bro. And I was like, I think you're right, man.
Bobby Bones
Did you ever have a kicker? You knew, you know, I don't say a name. You're like, this ain't gonna go well for the kicker. Yeah.
Andrew East
It's such a heady. It's a mental game. So, yeah, there's a couple. Like, there's one guy I knew who used to journal for, like, two hours after practice, and it was. He would write about what happened, and then he would write about how he felt about what happened, and then he would write about how he felt about how he felt about what happened. And you're like, that's deep in the mental. In the mental category.
Matt Castle
Too much time thinking on. Yeah. A practice.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Matt Castle
The best ones are the guys that can flush and just go next.
Bobby Bones
And Janikowski show up drunk.
Matt Castle
Completely.
Andrew East
I played with Jim.
Matt Castle
Did he play with Janet? No, I did not. He's a legend.
Andrew East
I will never forget. I showed up first day on the Raiders, going to the hot tub, and I see this huge guy there, and I was like, hell, he's got to be an onlineman. And there's Sebastian Janikowski. Dude, he would walk out there with dip in his sock, and, dude, he did not care. But to his credit, that old school athlete, even baseball players like David Wells, all the stories of him showing up and whatever, they didn't have that mental stress that I think youth sports and the whole system now kind of forces on you, where it's like, oh, I've worked my whole life for this and I'm so stressed and I can't mess this up. They didn't have that rumination. So it's like, yeah, did you just show up, you do your thing and you deuce out later and whatever.
Matt Castle
I think the environment's changed so dramatically, especially in youth sports, we're experiencing it that everybody's becoming more specialized earlier. And then in addition to that, they feel like in order to keep up with the competition, they've got to do more. They've got to do the travel ball, the club ball, and that's how most of these sports recruit now. But it is a lot of stress to put on a young kid, especially if they're not ready to handle that. In the old school mentality, I felt like you go out, you play your rec league, you're probably the best guy on the team. They know that. And sooner or later you're going to get an opportunity. And then they're like, this is great playing ball.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
How many teams you play with?
Andrew East
I think I signed Eight contracts with six teams. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
In five years, did you ever get to your destination and you got to go? What was your shortest run with the team?
Andrew East
Seattle was real brief. I remember I signed with Seattle. They had like three long snappers on the roster. And then I found out I got. Got cut by Seattle. Just I showed up, did my physical, and then they cut me on Twitter and I got like an alert.
Matt Castle
No way.
Andrew East
I was like, dang. I guess I'm not on the Seahawks. Like two weeks before a wedding. I was so stressed.
Bobby Bones
What kind of check do you get then? A week's pay?
Andrew East
Oh, no, no, no, no. So, I mean, I. If you're a bubble guy like me, you'd show up, you'd sign, you'd get the stipend for camp, which was, I don't know, 1500 bucks a week maybe. And then I got, I got a signing bonus in Kansas City because that was coming out of. That was the free agency in the draft. But then it's not a lot, dude. Like, I did not get paid a lot in the NFL. So Washington paid me the most, just the three games I played with them. You get, you get the proper game checks, which is good, but not a lot of money.

With your experience, how it went, how was that transition away? Were you kind of at some point relieved, or were you just like, it's time to move on?
Andrew East
I was fortunate I was making the transition while I realized pretty quickly, oh, shoot, I need to figure something else out because this is so uncertain. And so I was making the transition kind of during my career, and so it hurt way less when it was finally, like, time to close that door. But I remember the last time I got cut from the Redskins, we were pregnant with our daughter. She was going to be born in, like, two months or so, and I was like, I'm good. Like, I've accomplished everything I dreamed of and more about to have a daughter, and I don't want to be bouncing around the country everywhere with a newborn baby. I found my second passion in life, which I feel extremely fortunate to do a lot of. Dude, I feel like the longer you play professional athletics, the longer it takes you to come out of it. You know what I'm saying? It's, like, so hard. So hard. Sean took probably five years after her gymnastics career to feel confident in something else. And so I was like, I think. I think I'm good with football right now.
Bobby Bones
So you met her through your older sibling that's a cyclist? Yeah, Olympic cyclist.
Andrew East
Yeah, yeah. They met in London at the London Olympics. She had just retired, and she was looking at going to school at Stanford or Vandy, and I was playing football there. So I was like. I made my first social media account, tweeted at her, said, hey, I'll give you a tour if you want to come Shot my shot, bro. Here we are.
Bobby Bones
And that shot worked.
Andrew East
It took a little bit of time. It did.
Matt Castle
To pay nil money to get her to come to Vandy.
Andrew East
Took a little bit of time.
Bobby Bones
How long did you guys date before you got married?
Andrew East
Two years. But it took us about a year to convince her to date me. So I was, you know, I had to write the poems and just kind of work the lines.
Matt Castle
Oh, she made you wait. Like, a year is. Especially with the way this guy looks. You think that. Hey, linebacker.
Bobby Bones
Have you seen it with a shirt off?
Andrew East
I have, I have.
Bobby Bones
Let me tell you. You know what I'm saying?
Matt Castle
Hey, no.
Bobby Bones
Does everybody make the joke? Your kids are going to be so athletic.
Andrew East
Yeah. A lot of people assume athleticism of our kids, and so far, it's it's pretty fun to watch them be so intuitive with a lot of things. Our, all of our kids have ridden a bike by the time. I think the latest was like two and a half pedal bikes.
Bobby Bones
Two and a half years old?
Andrew East
Yeah. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
They're riding bikes.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Matt Castle
And my 8 year old just learned on a race, but she didn't have any interest.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, we have a four month old right now. I don't know if this is embarrassing or not, but she can only do seven burpees. Right now we're really working like we're really, we're focused. So we're not there yet, but we're.
Andrew East
Oh man, that's funny.
Matt Castle
How do you guys approach it with your kids? Do they know that you played professional sports or anything like that or what are the ages? How, how old?
Andrew East
We have a six year old daughter, four year old actually just turned five this past weekend. Five year old son and two and a half year old son. And I think they do know. I mean it's weird. People will, you know, come take pictures with Sean. They hear a voice at the airport and they're like why, why are you talking at the airport? And you know, there's a little bit of explaining that has to go in there. But what's really fun is, is I, I'm excited genuinely to see them find their thing. And like our four year old, sorry, five is racing motocross. He's an animal at it, dude. He rides like 50cc and goes out competitive. And I think, I think Sean and I are proud of everything we've accomplished. I think we're way infinitely more excited about what our kids are getting into. No matter. But I do think that we will have them do some physical activity. You know, there's a high school around here that you have to do at least one sport every semester. And I'm like, I used to think, oh, I won't force our kids into sports. You know, that was kind of our thing. But I feel pretty passionately that you learn something by getting involved in an athletic event that you can't learn any other way. Like to use your body like that is super important to have that discomfort. Super important. And then if you're doing a team sport, it's like gold, dude.
Bobby Bones
See the adversity from a team sport.
Matt Castle
Right?
Bobby Bones
Just even if you're a winning team. For me it wasn't a lot more adverse for me than you guys. Nice being awesome athletes.
Andrew East
What sports did you do?
Bobby Bones
It doesn't matter. It literally doesn't matter. It Literally doesn't matter. It does not matter.
Andrew East
You've been hyping this as a lefty.
Bobby Bones
No, it doesn't matter. She hyped anything up. I'm sitting over here, my little nerd glasses on. Little Urkel over here.
Matt Castle
Why are you making fun of yourself?
Bobby Bones
Well, I mean, he walked in and he was like, 35.
Matt Castle
225.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Matt Castle
That's four.
Bobby Bones
It's four plates. What's your relationship now with pro football?
Andrew East
I love football, dude. I'm so ready for it to start.
Bobby Bones
Still in.
Andrew East
I love it.
Bobby Bones
Who's your team now?
Andrew East
I grew up a Colts fan. I'm still a Colts fan. It's been fun to. I guess the Titans were good for a hot second, so I'll track those two teams. But I grew up watching Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne. No, I love. Took me, like, probably two years to feel good about watching it again and not get to a point where you're watching field goals and punts and thinking, you know, that guy sails it, maybe I'll get a call. And you're kind of like, oddly rooting against them subconsciously. I don't know if you felt this at all, but you're like, damn, I might get a chance.
Matt Castle
I know I'm better than that guy. Yeah.
Andrew East
No, why didn't.
Matt Castle
A call.
Andrew East
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, you did the trial to the guys, you're like, he's not that good. And then so you just get over that ego or whatever. And so now it's. It's fun. Like, you're rooting. You're rooting for everybody.
Bobby Bones
Would there be two long snappers on the. On the active roster?
Matt Castle
No.
Bobby Bones
So what if you hurt your ankle in the first quarter? Suck it up. Or is it like at times when they don't kick up?
Andrew East
Dude, when they don't kick, they usually
Matt Castle
will have like a swing guard or
Andrew East
somebody like that that had some tight end, maybe tight end.
Matt Castle
Somebody that has some experience. And they'll practice.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Matt Castle
What is it? Once a week or whatever. They'll get out there early and do it just in case that comes. And it has come up before in NFL games where your long snapper gets hurt, like run down on a punt.
Andrew East
Yeah. Travis Kelsey was a guy in Kansas City. Yeah, he was a backup. We used to do long snapping practice together.
Matt Castle
It's fun. So you'll always have that. But they're 32 long snappers in the league every year. And though if you get an opportunity, it's usually because of somebody's not doing Their job or what?
Andrew East
Injury, Injury, injury.
Matt Castle
Yeah, it's rare.
Bobby Bones
Did you ever think I should be center too?
Andrew East
No, never. I mean those guys, those guys are way different physical specimens. I lineback like, I think a lot of long snappers were maybe like decent defensive players in high school. Maybe alignment just too small to do anything else. And I was a linebacker, so the coaches loved that I was like kind of athletic. But no, dude, like the o linemen are 330 pounds. It's huge.
Bobby Bones
I weighed 250amax with snappers and make a parallel. So when I started doing stand up, I was fortunate that I could sell out theaters pretty quickly. And it wasn't based on how good I was. People would just buy tickets because they would go, we like him, we think he's funny from this. Let's just go watch. And I was able to get better doing pretty big venues. And then I got to be pretty good. I did a special. It was fine. I never got really good, but I got to be pretty good. But other real comedians did not take. I didn't put in my dues as a real comedian according to them, because I didn't play all the small clubs and play for seven people. And I understood their frustrations. But also, what do you want me to do? Right? I'm just, yeah, I'm of course going to play the hand I'm dealt. Because you weren't a long snapper until later on in college, would like the long snappers from like 8 years old on be like, you're not one of us. You're not real. You didn't play the long snapper.
Andrew East
Small clubs, I think that's more of a thing now. Like when just it was just turning. When I was coming into college where no one was really like a full time long snapper, there was no system or coaching like there is now with over 10. There was no like rankings until 202009 maybe.
Matt Castle
There's rankings deep, bro.
Andrew East
That. Yeah. Yes. It's a whole thing.
Bobby Bones
So there's that culture now though, where if you're late to the game, they look at you like you haven't put in your time. You're not even. You're not one of us.
Andrew East
The Colts guy, Luke, forget his last name. He was a linebacker all through college and then at the pros and then he just a couple of years ago said, I'm just going to long snap. And it was like, like everyone's like, dang. Well, you haven't been doing it. Like what? You just kind of took Our spot Overton is. When Overton left, this guy Luke joined and it was like, well, we all kind of thought, you know, on the sidelines we were going to get one of that spot. So it's, it's more of an insider, outsider mentality now. But it didn't used to be.

Now I was looking for fun ways to tell you that Mint's offer of unlimited Premium Wireless for $15 a month is back. So I thought it would be fun if we made fifteen dollar bills, but it turns out that's very illegal. So there goes my big idea for the commercial. Give it a try@mintmobile.com Switch upfront payment

You do a lot of work with your wife. Obviously you guys got the podcast, you wrote the book. Is there ever a time where you've ever wanted to fire because like you guys are. You started your own company. I mean, touch. There's gotta be arguments at times, right?
Andrew East
Yes, bro. What do you mean is he married? You talking?
Matt Castle
But what I'm saying is you. You guys both come from competitive backgrounds. So who wins those arguments most of the time?
Andrew East
Oh my gosh.
Matt Castle
And who's willing to give?
Andrew East
Sean is so fierce. She graciously is also very humble, which is amazing. I'm so grateful for that. Like she is simultaneously the most talented, ambitious, capable woman I know and the most humble. And she really doesn't have the need to flex, that she needs to be in control or have. I mean, it's the Sean show, you know what I'm saying? Like that book everyone will realize or remember as the book Sean wrote. And I am totally fine with that. Growing up playing long snapper used to not getting any credit, you know what I'm saying? And it's way better for me because I think if the attention started coming my way, I'd just be like an egomaniac where you're like, yeah, yeah, my capsule.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, you'd be in that cap castle. You mean Matt Castle. Yeah.
Matt Castle
So.
Andrew East
So it's all been wonderful and. And because she's so kind and. And gracious and generous, like, you know, we're. We're able to have a pretty good team dynamic. There are 100, I mean, so often arguments, but we've gotten enough practice. Rough side of. Now that we're better at having those conversations. We've kind of carved out our lanes as far as, you know, what. What our roles are in all different areas of life. And it's been a really good ride. So I. I love that girl.
Bobby Bones
What season did you guys do of the world's toughest test?
Andrew East
Special Forces.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Andrew East
Are you trying to do it?
Bobby Bones
No, I got invited to do it way early. Do it. No, no, no, no.
Matt Castle
Hold.
Andrew East
Do it.
Bobby Bones
Everybody hold. Hold your horses. What season did you do?
Andrew East
Three season.
Matt Castle
Four.
Bobby Bones
Okay, four. Yeah, yeah. So when I was. I got invited to do season two, I didn't even know what the show was. I was in the middle of doing another show that ended up not doing that well. But I thought, I don't wanna do this show. I don't even know what it is. Whatever. You guys, season's what made that show big. Because I don't think it really. I didn't know it. I had a friend that did it, Jamie Lynn, and she was like, you gotta do this show. And so producers called and they're like, do you wanna do it? I was like, I don't think so. Just because I didn't know it.
Andrew East
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And I think you guys, season is the one that really made it pop to where now it's cool, dude.
Andrew East
It is a really special, unique show. I mean, it's reality tv, but they don't have this dramatic angle to it. It. People who have done it, they'll get, like, tattoos from it. They'll. Nick Vile totally changed his lifestyle. Brie Chicken Fry changed her lifestyle. It's like, dude, in the course of a couple weeks, you really dig deep and you find out something about yourself. And yeah, we went to Morocco. I think season two was a cold season. If we had to deal with the cold, it would have been a whole different beast. I don't know how we would have done, but I love. It was such a fascinating experience because you go in there and I didn't know who else was on the show. They don't tell you. They keep it tight. And so you're meeting all these people for the first time with no access to social media, the Internet, nothing. So, like, you're just judging them based off of how they're interacting with you and the group. And you never get that now, you know what I'm saying? Everyone's wearing the same. Everyone has the same clothes on. So you're not. There's no, like, you know, what are they about by their costume or what they're wearing. It's just like, hey, how are you? I'm Andrew. Good to meet you. And what's your name? And then. And it really allowed for there to be this unique bonding as opposed to automatic. Like, oh, that's not my type. You know what I'm saying? So I loved it. Loved every second of it.
Matt Castle
Did you know Decker and Cobb before they were. You guys were on the same season, right?
Andrew East
You talk about Randall Cobb from the historic Kentucky football team.
Bobby Bones
Yes.
Andrew East
Just legendary.
Matt Castle
Yep.
Andrew East
I. We knew the Deckers, didn't we? We knew of Randall, but I hadn't really spent that much time.
Matt Castle
So you had no idea that those guys were even.
Andrew East
Not until the Deckers were on our plane in Morocco.
Matt Castle
Where are you guys going?
Andrew East
To Morocco? Yeah, that's pretty much what it was like. But, yeah, it was awesome. We just had dinner with him last night, and it's like lifelong friendships now.
Bobby Bones
So we had. And we both know Eric in different ways, but Eric was doing this show, and it was the day before he was off that show, and we could tell a little something. Something was up.
Matt Castle
He really didn't let any cat out of the bag.
Bobby Bones
He did.
Matt Castle
He couldn't talk about it because the
Bobby Bones
season finale, but he was a little sad about it.
Andrew East
It.
Bobby Bones
But he wouldn't say what he was.
Matt Castle
Oh, dude.
Andrew East
And, yeah, well, that was after we played Murder Ball, bro. Picture this. We have, like, I think it was like, five or six NFL guys, NFL football players out playing tackle football with no pads. We were getting wrecked. Dude, you're used to laying the hammer because you got Pads and a helmet. I hit Randall Cobb, dude, it was like the purest tackle I had, I had ever had in my life. I lined it up perfect. He didn't even go down. And I felt the whole right side of my body collapse. Dude, that guy is made of steel. And I got hurt. We had Chrissy Rampone get. You're breathing all this dirt. She couldn't breathe, so she had to go home. And then Decker's back was. Dude, he was in bad shape. He could not walk. It was tough to watch, but he was a beast. He was a beast.
Matt Castle
What was the worst part of the show or most challenging?
Andrew East
I mean, the whole thing from the get go. You go in, you're like, oh, there's no way I'm going to tap out. First night, I remember my body was in like it couldn't regulate the temperature because we had just done this. We were jumping in this cold water in the middle of the desert at 1am and we had just done this crazy, insane workout in the middle of the heat. And my body was all over the place and I was like standing there. I couldn't control my shakes, dude. I'd never shook like that. And I was like, I think I, I'm, I think I'm going to collapse and I'll have to tap out. So the whole time you're like, don't tap out?
Matt Castle
Not the first day.
Andrew East
Yeah, but you don't have a choice.
Matt Castle
And they don't feed you.
Andrew East
I lost 18 pounds in 10 days. And so the, the challenge is just the compounding number of variables that they throw your way. It's like you don't know when you're going to wake up. You don't know when you're going to go to bed. You don't know what the day holds. The temperature's crazy, the food's insane. And you're just like, it's all new and overwhelming and it's like it really, really. You either can start thinking about all the variables that you don't know and it'll drive you crazy, or you could just say, I'm just going to focus on what's next and then hopefully I'll make it, you know, just make it to the next thing. That's the goal.
Bobby Bones
What was your final on there?
Andrew East
I made it to the interrogation and I got annihilated, dude. Oh my gosh, I.
Matt Castle
Tell me about that.
Andrew East
So they put a bag over your head for like 18 hours. You're sweating, you can't really breathe. It's like this heavy Canvas. And then they put you. Dude, they put you in, like a zip up kind of like mechanic onesie. You know, it's too small, so you couldn't move your arms. But they had you sit in these stress positions for 18 hours, dude. And you're listening to all this, These noises and a headphone. Have you not heard about this? Oh, it's like legitimate torture.
Bobby Bones
Then why are you going? You should do the show.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Like, nothing about this. You have so much fun. We were torn torture for 18 hours. This is not.
Andrew East
I literally,
Matt Castle
I would say that that
Andrew East
was the weirdest thing I'd ever done in my life. So up until then, it was all, like, really cool, formative challenges. And then that was actual, like, this is torture. And I can't believe we're doing this. And then they rip the bag off your head every now and then spontaneously, and you're getting yelled at by this person. You have to have this alibi. And I can't lie for the life of me. So I'm like. They're like, are you married? And I was like, I didn't want to give up Sean. So I was like, no, no. And they're like, your wife's here with Tyson. And I was like, ah, frick.
Bobby Bones
I'm done.
Andrew East
I'm done, dude.
Bobby Bones
So then why is that show so fun? Or is it just when it's over, you look back and you're glad you did it?
Andrew East
That part is not fun. To clarify, that torture part is so real. And all of it is like, Johnny Manziel almost died legitimately four hours into it. Cause that first day workout. But you're like, dude, you're. We're grown men here. You know what I'm saying? Everyone on the show is. Has great resumes, and they've accomplished everything, and they're. You never get that opportunity in life to. To push yourself to the limit, to. To. To sign up, to do things involuntarily entirely. You know what I'm saying? It's like. I'm saying, okay, here I am.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, you're the boss. Usually you're not the boss there.
Andrew East
Yeah, 100%. And you're like, okay, cool, cool.
Bobby Bones
What.
Andrew East
What can I learn through that? And it's like, it is so good to be humbled in that sense and so good to be reminded. I mean, the. The military aspect. Those guys are insane. And to hear their stories, you're like, frick, we got all these comforts, man. What am I whining about, dude? They're talking about this, Billy. On there had a baby and he thought he was gonna. He thought he was gonna witness the birth of his child as like his second daughter because he was only going to be deployed for a month. And then he ends up being away for the first year and a half of this kid's life. Missed the birth, the whole thing. It's just like, what am I whining about, dude? And it just totally shifts how you see the world, I think. And it's good to do that as a grown adult.
Bobby Bones
That thing where you're usually the boss and then you're not. That happened to me on Dancing with the Stars because I'm in control of everything all the time, for the most part. Right. Everything I do, I've built it, I run it. There's the pressures with it, but there's the great things about it too. And it's not being tortured for 18 hours. But yeah, similar. Especially when you don't know what you're doing. But that was. That experience for me was. I was just told what to do all the time. And it is so humbling because we're not in that place anymore. Rarely do we have to just lean on and learn from and listen to
Andrew East
people all the time. I heard that show is brutal, dude.
Bobby Bones
They put us in these mechanic uniforms, they put a bag over our head.
Matt Castle
Stress torture position.
Bobby Bones
And then they make us dance. Is so man. Yeah, it was wild.
Matt Castle
Wrong shoes on. Do you still have relationships with any of the special forces guys? Like, do you actually continue to communicate with them after. Yes.
Andrew East
I, I'll, I'll probably call each of them maybe like once a month, just like check in and do the memories. It's like cell phone. It's. It's just like a locker room type mentality where it's such a short period of time, but the. It's such visceral moments that you share. You're like, oh, did no one else gets it. No one else knows what it's like to climb the army, crawl through shards of glass and how terrible that was that night. So you're just kind of looking for someone to share it with. So I, I'll, I'll, I'll keep in touch with them. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Final question.
Matt Castle
What's.
Bobby Bones
What's the honey? You were nice enough to bring us some honey. Is this special honey?
Andrew East
We're fourth generation beekeepers. We talk about this in the book. And yeah, this is the family honey. So we have, we have hives in Indiana and down here in Nashville. Bees are amazing. If you don't know about them. They're really cool, but also about them, bro. They have, like, this whole language. There's a whole kind of. They all have roles and, like, those. Like, there's, like, nurse bees. There's a queen bee. There's a worker bees. The way they. I mean, the way they populate a hive is insane. Like, it'll go from a 20,000 beehive to 80,000 a couple months. And it's just like this. They're on there working. You open up the hive, and this. There's this low hum that you're hearing, and they're all just in there doing their tasks. And it's so crazy to see, but this is my. My grandpa Madison. He was a moonshiner and a beekeeper. So we could give you moonshine, but I figured I'd give you the honey right now. We could do the moonshine later. The last thing my grandpa said to my dad before he died was, take care of the bees. And so now we have our kids doing it, too. They have little bee suits, and it's. It's a. It's a fun little family shtick.
Matt Castle
That's amazing. I'm getting some bees do it to
Bobby Bones
go with your pigs and your couple of chickens left.
Matt Castle
And hopefully the raccoon won't eat them.
Bobby Bones
Here's the book, guys. It's great. This is the Courage to Commit from Shaun Johnson and Andrew East.
Andrew East
Just Shawn Johnson. Yeah. Really? That's how people remember it.
Podcast Announcer
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Andrew east and also someone else. Yeah. Hey, really appreciate the time. Yeah, this is awesome. We're looking forward to. Looking forward to you coming in and. Yeah, obviously. Basically, Sean's amazing, and I. The funny story, I was working with someone. I always like to know how people are from people that work for folks. And I ran into somebody that had produced a lot of social media for you guys and act like I didn't know you guys at all. And it's not like we're close or anything, but we see. I see you guys. We saw Ethereum. We're like, what's up? You know, you guys are always so nice. And I was like, what do you do? And they were like, well, we, you know, produce. Produce podcast for Sean and Andrew. And I was like. I kind of was leading the. Leading the witness a little bit. I was like, what are they like? You know, hitting them with a tone like, I would understand. Like, I get it. Hot shots are probably hard to produce. I was like, what are they like? And she said, they're awesome to work for. And she just went on and on about how great you guys were to work for, and I thought that was super cool because she didn't have to say that. I tried to get her not to. I really wanted the truth. I was. Was like, are they tough? She's like, no, they're really, like, respectful, and they. And so they. I thought that was a pretty high compliment, but I really tried to get her to give me some dirt. But, yeah, you guys have, like, a wonderful reputation to be a good people, so that's super cool.
Matt Castle
Sorry, a little thing you didn't say. She just got a raise the week before.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, maybe. So you guys check out the book, the Courage to Commit. Andrew, really appreciate you coming by. Yeah, that's awesome. And you guys can follow Andrew. Andrew D. E. That's right.
Andrew East
And.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. And so I'm gonna go read about this thing called. Is it Football? It's like a. It's like a.
Matt Castle
It's like a new American sport.
Bobby Bones
It's leather, right?
Matt Castle
Leather.
Bobby Bones
Is that the one we were kicking? Is that the World Cup? No, it's a different football. Got it. All right. All right. There he is. Andrew East. This episode is equal parts football nostalgia, locker room humor, and thoughtful reflection on growth, adversity, and what comes after sports. Andrew East’s humility, candor, and wit shine in the banter with Bobby and Matt. The lessons from his winding career, new family life, and adventures in media resonate far beyond the field.
