Liberty. Liberty. Lots to say with Bobby Bones and Matt Castle is a production of the NFL and iHeart podcasts. We got lots to say. We got lots to say. We're glad you're here and we hope you stay? Cause we got lots to say. Yeah, we got lots to say. Now here's Bobby and Matt. Hey, welcome to the show. We're back.
Matt Castle
We're back.
Bobby Bones
After a couple had a baby. I mean, I did, sir. I've been very close to the experience. I didn't look, though.
Matt Castle
Were you in the room? Yeah. I want to know all about this. Dude, Come on, help.
Bobby Bones
I guess I haven't spoken to you about it yet because I didn't want to text.
Matt Castle
I didn't want to text you because I know that you're not going to pick up your phone.
Bobby Bones
Well, you texted me and you're like, congratulate. You were very nice, but you weren't like, give me all the deets.
Matt Castle
Yeah, give me the. Give me the deets.
Bobby Bones
So, yeah, I was in the room. That'd be weird if I wasn't, right? It's not the 50s anymore.
Matt Castle
That would be like old school. I. When I talked to my grandpa, my grandpa said they used to go in and he would sit in the other room and they'd knock him out.
Bobby Bones
And then. That's crazy.
Matt Castle
You know, they'd say, it's a. The doctor would come and say, it's a boy. It's a girl.
Bobby Bones
That's crazy.
Matt Castle
They didn't.
Bobby Bones
They weren't in the room then. And they don't, like, smoke cigars.
Matt Castle
Smoke cigars and have a little. Little thing of doers with them.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I was in the room. I stayed up at her head. Just for my own sake.
Matt Castle
Yeah, for safety reasons.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. And she was also, at one point, they were like, do you want a mirror? She's like, I'm good.
Matt Castle
Yeah, both of us.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, both of us are like, we're good. So, I mean, I don't know what to say.
Kevin
We.
Bobby Bones
My wife is a great athlete. It was the most athletic thing I've ever seen her do. And I've seen her do some really cool, athletic things. Like she's mercenary on the basketball court.
Matt Castle
She hits.
Bobby Bones
She plays shortstop. Like, she does it all runs. But watching her deliver a baby, it was crazy to just see that, like, her do that. But I don't know. I don't know. I mean, we've, you know, had been a couple weeks at home. It's extremely newborn. I took a week off of work fully. I'd recorded a bunch of radio shows leading up to it, and we kind of had an emergency valve. We pulled it whenever we had to go into the hospital. So as soon as that hit into the hospital, we had a week's worth of shows that were just airing that was still new content. And that week two, I did from the house. But, you know, for. Because leading into the weekend, I spent five, seven, nine days, just me, her and the baby, basically in the bedroom.
Matt Castle
It was a bubble, right?
Bobby Bones
I mean, you've been to this four times at this point. You know, we're just now starting to get out of the phase of making sure she's breathing all the time.
Matt Castle
Isn't that wild? When you first go in and you put them in their crib and you walk in and there's. It's dead silent, and you go up and you gotta, like, put your finger underneath her nose and you go.
Bobby Bones
Or, like, put your hand on, like, her chest.
Matt Castle
I think she's okay.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. So that was pretty wild, you know, driving home. So many people had told me that I'd be scared to death driving home. Lucky for me, whenever we got out. I haven't said this anywhere yet, and I didn't break any rules. I'd like to preface by saying that there were no rules broken at the
Matt Castle
hospital or in general.
Bobby Bones
We got out and got home just in time for the semifinals of the SEC tournament for Arkansas to play.
Matt Castle
So we Were. How convenient. How did you check out early?
Bobby Bones
We were able to get out.
Matt Castle
You were able to get out?
Bobby Bones
We were able to get out.
Matt Castle
How many nights did you stay in the hospital total?
Bobby Bones
Less than 48 hours.
Matt Castle
Less than 48 hours, right. Because that's usually what the time limit is. Right. Unless you have a C section, you get an extra day or something.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, they were like, expect to be there three, four days. And we had a ball game to watch.
Matt Castle
We had a ball game to watch.
Bobby Bones
And here's the thing, the tv, they had one, but the only speaker played through the bed speaker.
Matt Castle
One that she's got, the hospital bed speaker.
Bobby Bones
So I can even hear it.
Matt Castle
So, honey, I know you're a little. You have a little discomfort, but I think it's time, like, let's get you into your bed.
Bobby Bones
We really need to make you comfortable where you're the most comfortable in front of the television watching the SEC tournament. What's funny is that we kind of kept it under wraps for at least a week that the baby was born.
Matt Castle
But
Bobby Bones
hardcore listeners of the show or people that follow me on social media knew it because when I posted that Arkansas had won the SEC tournament because we won the whole tournament was awesome. That I posted a picture of the screen from watching it. And they knew since I wasn't at the game, which was here in town because that whole tournament was in Nashville, they were like, you had the baby. There's no way you wouldn't be at the game.
Matt Castle
And you're like, I'm not telling you guys, okay, this is my personal business, but you can say whatever you want. But yes, you did have the baby.
Bobby Bones
Kevin, I was thinking about you, man. Because really, one baby is alive. One baby's alive.
Matt Castle
Yeah. And twins is a whole nother.
Bobby Bones
And you have twins now, you didn't know any different. Correct. So you only know the version of your story that you lived. But you know, we're watching the babies, feeding the babies. It's schedule. It's a. But you have two of them.
Kevin
Yeah, it's legit. Non stop. And to your point, we've always said since day one, well, we don't know any different. And it's probably a good thing. If we only had one before and a couple years later, maybe we had twins. It'd be like, oh, my gosh, one was so much easier. Now it's like, hopefully the next one will be just one. And we'll be like, man, this piece of cake compared to the twins, because it's non stop.
Bobby Bones
Do you have Twins in your family?
Matt Castle
Her.
Kevin
She does on her side a lot.
Bobby Bones
When did you know you were having twins?
Kevin
The first ultrasound.
Matt Castle
Wow. Yeah. So you had time to wrap your head around a little bit, huh? Yeah. But still, you're like, oh, my gosh.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Did you look? Did you watch?
Kevin
Oh, heck no.
Bobby Bones
Okay, good.
Kevin
No, I was like, you. I was up by the head. I was like, I don't want to see nothing.
Bobby Bones
I was focused in on her. I didn't want to see it anyway.
Matt Castle
It was crazy intense in there, right?
Bobby Bones
Yeah. I want to shout this out, too. The labor and delivery nurses are awesome.
Kevin
Yes.
Bobby Bones
I'm talking about a.
Matt Castle
Yes.
Bobby Bones
We had one. And they don't have their last names on their tag, but her name was Lindsay.
Kevin
A.
Bobby Bones
And when my wife went into labor, she was there. She did 75% of it before the doctor even got there.
Matt Castle
The doctor basically comes in for the delivery.
Bobby Bones
The doctor is Mariano Rivera.
Matt Castle
Yeah, exactly. They're the absolute closer.
Bobby Bones
Comes in and closes.
Matt Castle
People that are working are those nurses. The entire delivery.
Bobby Bones
So big shout out to her because she was awesome. And she was like. Her bedside manner was perfect. But we also knew it was business time. And when they started grabbing the plastic, that's when I knew it was about that time because it was quick. Like, whenever she actually started going into labor to the time the baby came out was less than an hour.
Matt Castle
That's incredible.
Bobby Bones
It was incredible. And they were like, okay, if you can pull. And again, the athletic thing is my wife, like, pulling her legs back.
Matt Castle
Yes.
Bobby Bones
And her arms are, like, ripping at biceps. Yeah. And so when they started grabbing the plastic, I was like, oh, my God, we're going. If they're, like, protecting us from water. Yes. They were tarping it up.
Matt Castle
The tidal wave's coming, so.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. And then I think we've gotten to a place now where the baby sleeps for six hours.
Matt Castle
I was gonna say, how is your sleep? Because I know you value your sleep.
Bobby Bones
My sleep is good.
Matt Castle
Let's be honest.
Bobby Bones
My wife's is probably a little less than good. My wife has been great, though, because I've said, hey, whatever I need to do. Take the job out of it. Whatever I need to do. I know my hours are weird. And she basically is like, hey, we need you to do the you things, and I'll do the baby things. And if something ever happens, it's overwhelming, I'm going to have you hop in and help, which I do. I try to assist her all the time. That was the first week was all assisting her.
Matt Castle
Right.
Bobby Bones
Cleaning the House.
Matt Castle
That's different, right? If you haven't been doing it, never.
Bobby Bones
When do I clean the house?
Matt Castle
Exactly.
Bobby Bones
When do I put dishes in the. None.
Matt Castle
Get me back to my show.
Bobby Bones
Filling bottles. If. If we're doing a bottle, you know, if she's not. If I'm going to feed it, I got to do a bottle. I don't have, you know, I can't really. You know.
Matt Castle
So you thought about it.
Bobby Bones
So. But I want to feed, I want to learn. And I've never touched a baby. Only one baby I've ever held my nephew for one second because I was like, hold the baby.
Matt Castle
That was. Cause of the restraining order.
Bobby Bones
That was not a joke. But it's been great.
Matt Castle
You only held one baby your entire life?
Bobby Bones
Oh, yeah.
Matt Castle
What the hell's the matter with you?
Bobby Bones
Yeah, yeah. I didn't want to break them. I don't know. I just was scared to mess up somebody's nice fine china, which is what a baby was.
Matt Castle
Wow.
Bobby Bones
Wow.
Matt Castle
One baby.
Kevin
Guys are like that.
Matt Castle
That would be super intimidating. Then if you're holding your own baby at first and you've only held one other one your entire life, at first
Bobby Bones
I was just like, I don't really know what to do now. I'm just like, you know, scoop it up, grab it, run.
Matt Castle
Oh, look at you. Look at you, baby girl.
Bobby Bones
But she's rocking. We have very much. We have kind of a formula for the day now.
Matt Castle
Yeah. We have routines now. Are you going full schedule? Yeah, yeah. My wife was a schedule from the time they came home. Just the sleep schedule was huge.
Bobby Bones
I love a full schedule. Anyway, I live my life by a full schedule. But now my wife's got to be on that because the baby's got to eat every two and a half hours so the baby can sleep. Because you get. I didn't know anything about babies.
Matt Castle
Yeah, it's playtime, then it's nap time.
Bobby Bones
This felt like when I went to Japan. Everything was so foreign. I was like, I can't believe this is happening. They don't have trash cans on the street. Like, everything was so new. I'm not grossed out about poopoo pee anymore.
Matt Castle
Yeah. How about diaper changing? How are you doing in that regard? How many diapers have you actually changed?
Bobby Bones
Thank you for asking. I have been at least an assistant on probably 95% of them.
Matt Castle
Oh, way to go, dude.
Bobby Bones
So we have a routine. Put the three wipes down. I get the diaper, slide it under. I gotta put the new diaper under the old diaper in Case they continue to go to the bat.
Matt Castle
There are all these things which happens.
Bobby Bones
Yes. A lot.
Matt Castle
Yeah, a lot.
Bobby Bones
And so. But I've changed a couple by myself, fully.
Matt Castle
So proud about that. Desitin A and D or whatever it's called.
Bobby Bones
Gotta make sure I don't know what that is. What'd you say? Ointment.
Matt Castle
Yeah, the ointment. We gotta be heavy on the ointment. We can't get a diaper rash is real.
Bobby Bones
I put it on the baby.
Matt Castle
This is an epidemic.
Bobby Bones
So wipe me down with it. Curl off my butt. And then I put on the babies.
Matt Castle
Yeah, good call.
Bobby Bones
I thought that's what you're supposed to do.
Matt Castle
How about swaddling?
Bobby Bones
I'm an expert at it. But the swaddles are so easy.
Matt Castle
Now, the Velcro, they are amazing. They slowly but surely got better as I had more and more kids. And I was like, this is amazing.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Matt Castle
Even used to have to five to
Bobby Bones
seven years ago, you'd have to do it all yourself.
Matt Castle
It's brutal.
Bobby Bones
Like pony express bringing mail.
Matt Castle
Now it's like, what are we, in the 1800s?
Bobby Bones
Put them in the sack, put their arms through the holes, put their hands in.
Matt Castle
It's comfortable to sleep.
Bobby Bones
It feels weird. Pinning their arms down.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
In my life, I've been told never pin a human's arms down if you don't want them getting angry or filing in restraining order.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Maybe you have to, like, put them down and then. Yeah, that Velcro helps so much.
Matt Castle
Wait, they have new.
Bobby Bones
I used to feel like I was
Matt Castle
working at Chipotle the whole time.
Bobby Bones
Oh, yeah, it's a hole.
Matt Castle
Oh, dude, it's a hole.
Bobby Bones
It's 70% done. You put them in the sack, put their arms through armholes, then you just. Velcro. Velcro. Show business, baby.
Matt Castle
And then you're like, boom. Good night. You're in your cocoon. Have a great time.
Bobby Bones
So that's my news.
Matt Castle
Being a dad, I mean, incredible. Is it just what you believed it was going to be or every.
Bobby Bones
I didn't have any sort of idea what it would be. No idea. No expectation. I can tell you it has been like to see my wife in that way. It's a whole different element and respect. Not even just having the baby, but how, like, wonderful she is and how much she loves it. Like she said multiple times, she's like, this is the happiest I've ever been in my life.
Matt Castle
You're definitely having more kids in just the last.
Bobby Bones
Just the last few weeks. I don't want to be a hundred, though.
Matt Castle
Yeah, you're going to be fine. You'll be sexy, salty, old, old guy at the second grade fair. You'll be great.
Bobby Bones
But it's been good. And I feel good. She feels good. I used to think sports reference here you have a baby. I didn't know much about babies though, so I want everybody to know this. You go, you have a baby as a woman, you rub some dirt on it, you get to raising. Next day you're up running around.
Matt Castle
No chance.
Bobby Bones
It's like they had a car crash into them below the waist.
Matt Castle
Oh, 100%.
Bobby Bones
And I didn't really know how serious it was, but they need help. They can't even walk. It's crazy.
Matt Castle
I mean, think about the transformation that body goes through for nine months. How much more courageous and how much more strong willed women are just to be able to give birth. I mean, just the act of giving birth itself is just such an exceptional phenomenon.
Bobby Bones
All the recovery with the stitches and I hurt my ankle. It was out four months.
Matt Castle
It was a serious ankle injury.
Bobby Bones
They have everything go ripping and everybody just expects them to start to raise in the next day. It's wild.
Matt Castle
You're like, I'm going to need a few days.
Bobby Bones
I do have a bit of dad brain because you just stay so focused on the baby. I've compared it to like a long road trip. You get out after a long road trip and you're exhausted, but you didn't do anything. That's what it feels like with a newborn for me is that there's so much focus on it. I'm not doing anything right. I'm doing some stuff like I'm changing diapers or I'm getting, you know, helping her feed to get, get her the burp cloth to get the peanut to change it on, get to find the clothes, do make sure the house is straight. But I'm not really doing anything. But at the end of the night, I'm just exhausted.
Matt Castle
You're exhausted for sure. You got a new baby in the house, dude. Little baby girl.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, it's been good.
Matt Castle
It's amazing. Also, dude, it's your birthday on Thursday this week. How old are we turning?
Bobby Bones
Well, I consider.
Matt Castle
Or am I allowed to ask that? Or are you like a female? Or you're like, don't ask me my age.
Bobby Bones
It's all on the age or my weight.
Matt Castle
What's your weight and your age.
Bobby Bones
Look at this picture. Look at this picture.
Matt Castle
Tell me your weight and your age.
Bobby Bones
Don't put this on the pod. But look at the hair of our baby.
Matt Castle
Full head. Bobby's a new dad. Wow. What an exceptional thought.
Bobby Bones
There you go. I like that, because that could have been your first topic.
Matt Castle
No, first topic. Best or worst birthday gift you ever received.
Bobby Bones
Oh, my wife, two years. I'll be 46, by the way. My wife, two years ago.
Matt Castle
46. You look great.
Bobby Bones
Thank you. Yeah, it's never. It's never heavy.
Matt Castle
I just want to say it like that to really make it anticlimactic
Bobby Bones
that I'm going to be like Howie Mandel when he snapped on Kelly Ripa. Did you see that at all?
Matt Castle
I saw that.
Bobby Bones
When I'm like, what do you mean I look great for 46 or in general? He's 70, Jaime.
Matt Castle
He looks unbelievable for 70.
Bobby Bones
But that's why he got.
Matt Castle
But that is old.
Bobby Bones
That's why.
Matt Castle
That's why I would sit there and go, dude, you look amazing for 70.
Bobby Bones
For me, I think my secret is never had drink of alcohol. And I don't go in the sun.
Matt Castle
I'm the exact opposite. Well, give me three years and let's see how I look. I'm going 44 this year. I've got a.
Bobby Bones
Your beard looks good, though.
Matt Castle
I'm telling you, my wife hates it. I was making out with her today, and she's like, honey, I can't even feel your upper lip.
Bobby Bones
Maybe if she does not making out
Matt Castle
is a strong statement. Maybe a little overkill. Maybe trying to give her a little kiss, but she's like, your hair is now coming over into your upper lip. I was like, well, you know, I never asked you to stop being a woman. Stop asking me to stop being a man.
Bobby Bones
Got her.
Matt Castle
Boom.
Bobby Bones
Except you're going to shave it if she hates it 100%.
Matt Castle
I'm going to probably shave it within the week. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. She does look good, though. Like, I'm jealous.
Matt Castle
She wins. Yeah, I've been ever since you told me. You kind of gave me a boost of confidence. I just kind of rocked it.
Bobby Bones
Foreign.

Matt Castle
Had a Daddy daughter dance this weekend.
Bobby Bones
How did that go?
Matt Castle
Amazing, because it's my youngest, she's in second grade and prior to this, there's been years prior to this where she goes, dad, I don't know if I want to go to daddy audience because you're going to embarrass me. I was like, embarrass you? What do you think I'm going to do? You're in first grade, kindergarten, all these things. And I don't know what I did in the past to embarrass her, but she thought I was going to embarrass her this year. All about it. Dad, can you take me? I would love to go with you. I think it would be fun. So we went to a friend's house with all her friend group and all that stuff. It was a cowboy theme, which fit my bill beautifully.
Bobby Bones
What'd you wear?
Matt Castle
Cowboy hat, cowboy boots, little button down blazer, jeans. She came up to me at the dance, even though there's so many girls from her class and all that, asked me to dance with her multiple times. I was like, I am winning. So it was a fantastic weekend for me.
Bobby Bones
What are the rules of the daddy daughter dance? Because in my mind, the rules where you dance together the whole time, you don't. You just take her and then if she wants to dance with you, she asks you.
Matt Castle
Well, it's kind of. They've got this other separate room, right, that they can go in and there's like a picture booth. And then they had little arts and crafts for some of the younger kids. So it's. They kind of run around with their friends. Friends. Their circle of friends, I guess I should say. But then they come up to you and ask to dance. And then of course they leave you on the dance floor after they dance with you for a song. And then you feel like the creep because you're still kind of you.
Bobby Bones
And the other daddy was like, man,
Matt Castle
I should probably step Back from this, because this just looks me on the outside dancing around girls that aren't my girls.
Bobby Bones
It's probably going to get off the floor.
Matt Castle
What was your best. Oh, you were saying, best gift, worst gift?
Bobby Bones
Oh, my wife, two years ago. I'm a big Andy Kaufman fan who was a performance. They call him a comedian, but he's very much a performance artist in, like, the late 70s, early 80s. He would do things like. Well, you may know him. You ever watch Taxi on Nick at night? The show? No, it wasn't on during our lives. Oh, you do?
Matt Castle
Yes.
Bobby Bones
He's like, lot gone. Taxi. Oh, thank God much. He was on Saturday Night Live. But he was not a joke guy.
Matt Castle
Right.
Bobby Bones
And so he would do things like when he was touring, people would come because he was lock on tax, and he kind of was annoyed by that. So he'd go, all right. And he would put a tent up on stage as part of his act and then just go to sleep in it. And then we'd be like, what's happening? He never would come out.
Matt Castle
Come on.
Bobby Bones
So that was his performance art. He would do stuff like read like War and Peace, and he would be like, page one and just read the book till everybody left. So to have that kind of courage on stage was something that I was always drawn to. And so massive fan. I love Jim Carrey in Man on the Moon. He's playing Andy Kaufman. It's my favorite movie ever.
Matt Castle
Didn't he dress up for one award ceremony as Andy Kaufman and went and impersonated him when he was in character?
Bobby Bones
Probably Andy Kaufman's opening act that Andy Kaufman also was dressing up as to open for himself.
Matt Castle
Okay.
Bobby Bones
Because Andy was very much.
Matt Castle
You think it was courageous that he went up on stage and slept in a tent?
Bobby Bones
I think he's super brave.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
It could also be stupid and bad content or whatever you want to say, but, yeah, yeah. To try stuff.
Matt Castle
Yeah. I love the fact about trying stuff, but I would be annoyed as hell if I went to go.
Bobby Bones
That was the point.
Matt Castle
Yeah, a little bit.
Bobby Bones
No, that was his point. He wanted to annoy everybody.
Matt Castle
Oh, okay.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Matt Castle
Well, that's fair.
Bobby Bones
The shows would be for him. A massive fan. My wife bought me a handwritten note that he wrote himself.
Matt Castle
Wow.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Two years ago. And it's framed and it's just a note that he wrote himself to keep trying, even though all the stuff that he was doing wasn't going like he had hoped. But it was basically a pump yourself up note that he kept. And when he died, it was Bought in his estate. And so then it was put in. Planet Hollywood had it. The casino had it in their museum. And so my wife bought it from them and gave it to me as a gift.
Matt Castle
That's cool. Incredibly thoughtful.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, it's one of my favorite gifts ever. I don't really have a bad gift because if it's a bad gift, I don't remember it. This birthday's different, though, this year because we have a baby. I literally don't. When the show airs, it'll be tomorrow. I haven't thought about it at all. I know. My wife got me a cake. She's already told me because I can't have milk or dairy or any kind. So she got me a dairy free, like, big razorback cake.
Matt Castle
Sweet.
Bobby Bones
I'm good. That's all.
Matt Castle
I'll jump out of a cake for you if you want.
Bobby Bones
See it just amplified again. Is that what you did at the father daughter dance?
Matt Castle
No, jump out of the cake. That's what she was embarrassed about. Jumped out of the. All right, get out your tens and twenties, folks. Here comes Castle.
Bobby Bones
Does everybody look at you in those places? Like, that's my Castle, the quarterback. Does that happen a lot?
Matt Castle
No. I've been around that school for so long. I mean, I've been there since, gosh. My oldest, who's now a sophomore, was in first grade, so 19 years. I know everybody from every grade level. So I'm just one of the dudes, one of the guys.
Bobby Bones
Well, if we start pick 800 of
Matt Castle
your notes right there, that we can talk about.
Bobby Bones
The NFL is set to bring in replacement refs.
Matt Castle
Yeah, I did just see that.
Bobby Bones
Did you ever have anything like this? Was there ever a ref strike or anything with you?
Matt Castle
There was one year, right? It was the year. It was a catastrophe. What year was that?
Kevin
That was the. I'll check the year right now. But that was when that touchdown.
Matt Castle
Yeah, it was Seattle.
Kevin
Yeah, Seattle and Green Bay wasn't.
Matt Castle
It wasn't Golden Tate. Oh, yeah. In the back of the end zone, Green Bay and everybody went upended. And then it was literally the next week that they reinstated the officials.
Bobby Bones
It took a really bad blown call.
Matt Castle
Yeah, just one bad blown call.
Kevin
2012.
Matt Castle
2012. So, yeah, absolutely, I was there.
Bobby Bones
According to reports, NFL owners are alarmed over how far apart the league and the NFL RA are in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. Things have gotten so bad, the NFL has authorized staff members to begin hiring and onboarding replacement officials in the coming weeks. From espn. I wonder if they'll be seen as Scabs if they come in as a replacement ref, because you would only grab people that were close to that level anyway.
Matt Castle
Right. You're probably going to have to go into Collegiate College, and some of those
Bobby Bones
guys might want to be NFL refs at some point for sure. And if you do that, then does that mean you don't get to be one because you were a scab and you crossed over?
Matt Castle
I don't know. I guess you gotta. You're gonna have to be a part of the NFLRA Referee Association. And then. So I'm guessing Collegiate's different than the NFL.
Bobby Bones
Ra.
Matt Castle
And I don't know what the qualifications are. If you have to have appropriate schooling or whatever. Whatever the application process sounds like.
Bobby Bones
They'll take people at this point to be the replacement reps that don't have the appropriate schooling, just a different kind.
Matt Castle
Right. But they also didn't. They passed the rule, too, that they're gonna be able to review plays that they felt were reviewable or didn't get it right and overturn that in the middle of the game with the replacement refs or what's happening, Placement refs. But if they bring back the actual officials, then that part of the review system goes away.
Bobby Bones
Oh, I didn't know that. That's interesting. That'd be a good look. Because you can change a review like the Golden Tate.
Matt Castle
Right. So you can change it right there from video in New York or whatever it is. If they're making major mistakes, it's going to impact the game.
Bobby Bones
Did you ever have a ref that you liked, or was the relationship never that?
Matt Castle
It's usually pretty professional. I mean, honestly, the head ref would always come up before the game, introduce himself, tell you, look, I'm going to protect you. Let me know if you have any issues. This, that and the other. You'd get upset. Sometimes I remember. What was his name? I was in Seattle. They had 12 people on the field. And I turn around, I think it was Walt was his name. And I'm screaming, walt.
Bobby Bones
What? They got 12 people on the field. You're yelling at the ref.
Matt Castle
He's yelling at the ref. Because he stands right behind me. I'm screaming, I'm hot. I'm in, like, full rage mode. And he goes, castle, you have to snap the ball for me to throw the thing.
Bobby Bones
I was like, he said it on the field.
Matt Castle
And I looked at him, I go, you're right. I'm sorry. And by the time the guy started running off, they called a timeout. I was like, that's My bad. That's my bad. I take back every. And I mean, I'm screaming at him, 12 people on the field just out of my head. And he goes, castle, you have to snap the ball for me to throw the penalty.
Bobby Bones
And you knew that it was just crazy.
Matt Castle
Yeah. And then after the game, we got a chuckle out of it. But at the same time, I was. I was slightly embarrassed. But you know, you're in the moment of the game. But most of most of them are super professional. They're good guys. And most of the yelling and all that stuff that takes place are usually with the head coach on the sideline. Like, Bill used to get after these coaches all the time because they have something more to say and they're not going to always throw, you know, the 15 yard flag for harassment. But they've tightened that ship up too, as well.
Bobby Bones
Did you ever have an instance where you ran into a ref in a non football setting? You're like, oh, Willie.
Matt Castle
Hmm. A few different events. Sometimes at the super bowl, the guy that now does commentary for it's not just collegiate basketball. He works for one of the main networks. There he was, Gene Serrator. Seen him multiple times. He's an awesome dude with incredible stories.
Bobby Bones
Are you allowed to talk to them?
Matt Castle
Oh, yeah, you can talk to him all the time. Like they're just normal guys. It's not like you. It's.
Bobby Bones
There's no fraternization rules with players and refs where it's like, don't.
Matt Castle
No. You probably can't go out and have a bunch of drinks and be like, hey, dude, look, tomorrow, next week, whenever,
Bobby Bones
the night before the game, I'll buy
Matt Castle
your dinner and give you a free gift certificate if you hook us up a little bit. So did you ever feel like
Bobby Bones
players got benefits from ref. If they were famous or star players?
Matt Castle
100%. I mean, especially certain DBs, say the Richard Shermans of the world or Champ Bailey's of the world and guys like that that have proven themselves, they get the benefit of the doubt. For sure. It might be a little bit more handsies, there might be more contact downfield. But again, because they're extraordinary players, they would a lot of times not be called on certain things that other lesser players might get called on.
Bobby Bones
That's frustrating.
Matt Castle
It can be frustrating.
Bobby Bones
Unless you have on your team Richard Sherman.
Matt Castle
Yeah, unless he's on your defense. It's great. It's great. Reavis is another guy. But those guys were also so skilled that they'd get away with certain stuff because when they, most of the time, they're doing it exactly right. They're on the hip of the wide receiver, and it looks like they're doing something wrong. But they're just dynamic players. Other times, you watch the film back and go, this is clear pass interference, or this is clear hands, whatever it might be. So, yes, certain players will definitely get the benefit of doubt. And you see it, too, even with quarterbacks nowadays, how they protect them. I know the rules say protect them, but you'd see some of those hits that Brady or Mahomes or some of these guys would take. Now that everybody's like, that's not roughing the passer.
Bobby Bones
Did you ever have a reference make a mistake and although he wouldn't admit he made a mistake, kind of give you the idea that he's going to make it up to you?
Matt Castle
No. No. If they make a mistake, they probably own it and move on. I never felt like they had a makeup call on the back end.
Bobby Bones
Do you think makeup calls are a real thing?
Matt Castle
Sometimes when you watch games, you think at home.
Bobby Bones
It's easy at home.
Matt Castle
I don't know if that was necessarily what it was called, but that just might have been because two plays ago, you made an awful call. I mean, it's probably human nature.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Matt Castle
You know, where you feel bad, you're
Bobby Bones
like, I've been making up calls like crazy.
Matt Castle
Because the other part is they see the big screen just like everybody else. When everybody starts booing and going, boo. And they're going, oh, my God, that was an awful call.
Bobby Bones
Is there a rule.
Matt Castle
I wish I could overturn that now,
Bobby Bones
but refs don't look at the screen.
Matt Castle
There's gotta be.
Bobby Bones
Right. Even if it's an unspoken rule, like, if you're a ref and they're showing a call, you're probably like, eyes down.
Matt Castle
Yeah. Cause all, you know, with. Especially if it's the home crowd, they're there. No matter what happens on the screen, they're going to think that you are at fault for calling the penalty. So I'm sitting there, I was like, I don't really want to watch that. I'm going to huddle up with my group, make the call, move on with the game. But if you watch it and see that you've actually messed up now, you know you're going to have to answer 10 times more questions.
Bobby Bones
All right, hit me with something. What do you got over here?
Matt Castle
Hit me with something. Okay. Well, we have the annual coaches and owners meeting going on right now. I thought it would be fun if we were to do a UFC event with just the 32 NFL head coaches. Who you putting in to the event?
Bobby Bones
Are we drafting fighters? Because I think you're old coach Mike Vrabel's first.
Matt Castle
Yeah, Vrabel's got to be. You've got to go with Dan Campbell.
Bobby Bones
Oh, who would you pick first, Vrabel or Campbell? Ooh, I think that'd be the main event, though. Right?
Matt Castle
That's what I was saying, because there's only a handful of guys that you're sitting there looking at that picture because it came out on social media. You know, the picture that they take all the time. I would go with Vrabel. I would go with Variable. He was a defensive guy. I actually. I had a Toby Keith concert one time. We were backstage and I was messing around with him, and maybe a few pops were involved, and I was like, all right, let's go, dude. Like, wrestle. Next thing I know, he has got me in a full headlock and put me on the ground. And this is when I was in pretty good shape. I thought I was going to give him a little bit more. He's still strong, dude. Did you see the video that came out the other day at the kids pro day?
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Maurice up.
Matt Castle
He's up there hand fighting. He's still got it, dude. I think Variable's still in shape. I'd say that he's definitely the favorite in the UFC competition.
Bobby Bones
I think McVeigh would be really strong, too, because he was from a cardiovascular standpoint, but also he's an athlete. Like, he's a college football player.
Matt Castle
Yeah, I think he'd give you some. But the weight differential.
Bobby Bones
Well, he's got to fight somebody his own weight. Like, we ain't matching him up against Braves, But I think McVay would fare well because I think he's still in good shape. Obviously a great athlete because he.
Matt Castle
What about Demika Ryan?
Bobby Bones
Oh, yeah, for sure.
Matt Castle
Yeah. Linebacker, played in the league. Killer.
Bobby Bones
What's the story, Kevin, you may help me here. Sean McVay was like, whatever state he's from was like, mister. And he beat out somebody. Ended up being like a world class athlete. I bet if you Google that, and I gave you nothing to Google, you'll find it.
Kevin
But McVay beat out Calvin Johnson.
Bobby Bones
That's it. What?
Kevin
Offensive player of the year? Yeah. 4A in Georgia.
Matt Castle
4A in Georgia. Beat out Calvin Johnson as a quarterback. Wow, that's really impressive.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Like, I think it's a little hidden, but I think that guy. I think McVeigh would be a dog for sure.
Matt Castle
Who else you got on that list?
Bobby Bones
You know who. He's not a head coach anymore. I guess when he was head coach in the Dolphins, maybe he would have. But he's what, the Charger offensive coordinator now?
Kevin
McDaniels?
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Isn't he with Chargers?
Kevin
Yep.
Bobby Bones
That guy's an athlete.
Matt Castle
No chance. Does he even get.
Bobby Bones
Have you seen him play ball?
Matt Castle
I'm sure he can play pickleball and stuff.
Bobby Bones
No, not pickleball. Football.
Matt Castle
Oh, no, like collegiate.
Bobby Bones
He was a wide receiver. That dude was a dog.
Matt Castle
Was he really?
Bobby Bones
Yes.
Matt Castle
I would have never guessed that.
Bobby Bones
Who do you have on your list?
Matt Castle
Who else do we got? Oh, you got to go with Saleh. Robert Sala.
Bobby Bones
Oh, yeah, I forgot. He's the head coach again. Yeah, he's coaching here and he's a beast. You're picking these high weight guys, though.
Matt Castle
Oh, of course I am. I'm sticking with the heavyweight division. Dude. I'm probably up there right about now. I'm probably right around 240 or something like that. I think that would be a pretty good solid foursome. So who. Who's your top four then?
Bobby Bones
Well, I was doing matches. I saw.
Matt Castle
Okay, so matchup variable. Dan Campbell.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, yeah. And then I'm going to do.
Matt Castle
Saul is a big dude too, though. We're going to have to.
Bobby Bones
But is he tall? I think I do. Salah and McVay. Really? And I think McVeigh might take him.
Matt Castle
He's giving away a lot of. And then you're doing Demiko Ryan versus Mike McDaniels.
Bobby Bones
Oh, no. Daniel's not a coach anymore. Head coach anymore. Okay, so I'm going to do Salah and d' Amico Ryan.
Matt Castle
Okay. And then what? You got to have somebody for McVeigh.
Bobby Bones
I'm going to do McVeigh Shanahan, Kevin O'.
Matt Castle
Connell.
Bobby Bones
I feel like those guys are.
Matt Castle
What about Todd Bowles? He's getting a little older. But what about.
Bobby Bones
I'm going to go with a guaranteed victory for McVeigh. Pete Carroll, even though he's out, he's retired again.
Matt Castle
What about the Harbaugh brothers? Who wins in that?
Bobby Bones
Probably John.
Matt Castle
No way. I go with Jim. Jim's nuts.
Bobby Bones
John's a little crazy. See, I was going to go. John's a little crazier. Really? But I think they all fall from the same trade there. Probably an equally amount of crazy there.
Matt Castle
All right, we got two other brothers, LaFleur brothers. They're pretty close in age too, aren't they? Mike and Matt LaFleur.
Bobby Bones
I don't know their ages.
Matt Castle
I don't either.
Bobby Bones
I don't know anybody's ages anymore. It all starts to be a blur once you get to a certain point. Ages.
Matt Castle
Once you get to your middle ages. Yeah, it's all gone.
Bobby Bones
NFL Draft is this month and so ChatGPT did a first round mock and instead of just going through and talking about each player, what blows my mind is how Ohio State did not win the national championship.
Matt Castle
Oh, my God.
Bobby Bones
It feels very much like Duke last year with knipple and flag and they did not win the national championship of basketball.
Matt Castle
Right.
Bobby Bones
Or even this year with the boozers wins.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
At one, Fernando Mendoza to the Raiders. But Arvell Reese, the edge at Ohio State, who's unbelievable. At 5, Sonny Styles, linebacker, who's awesome. Ohio State at 7, Carnell Tate, the wide receiver. The Commanders. The fact that Ohio State has all these massive early first round picks and didn't.
Matt Castle
Yeah. Caleb Downs too. Isn't he on there?
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Matt Castle
Yeah. Where's he at?
Bobby Bones
Safety at 10 to the Bengals.
Matt Castle
Yeah. It's ridiculous.
Bobby Bones
The fact that they have all these guys and did not do what they did, what they should have done, blows my mind. It feels very Duke ish.
Matt Castle
You got three players on the defensive side of the ball right there, all in the top 22 on that list.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Mendoza, 1. Arvell Reese. At 2, David Bailey, who's awesome at Tech. The edge there.
Matt Castle
He is really good at three.
Bobby Bones
To the Cardinals. To the Titans. Jeremiah Love, running back, Notre Dame, who a lot of these guys are saying is the best prospect in the draft, but any position. But it's also like, how much do you value a running back?
Matt Castle
Yeah, I'm sorry to finish your sentence. I just feel like we're on such good wavelengths.
Bobby Bones
We are. We're there. And also if you're the Titans, you got a lot of holes to fill.
Matt Castle
You do. And is running back the most pressing?
Bobby Bones
And how good does the running back need to be to take it above like a Sonny Styles.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Who's frigging awesome.
Matt Castle
The thing about Jeremiah Love that makes him uniquely special is because not only is he one of those runners that can take it 90 on any given play, but he can be dynamic in the pass game. He's like, he's like Gibbs. He's like the kid from Atlanta.
Bobby Bones
Or Camara.
Matt Castle
Yeah. Kamara, where he's going to be a third down threat. He's going be able to run between the tackles. He's a do it all back, which immediately Accelerates your offense and makes you a better unit.
Bobby Bones
But like to take him above Ruben Bane, who was such a stud for Miami this last year.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Like he has to be that type of special.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
I mean, when Detroit, when they ended up making a surprise pick at running back, who you just brought up Gibbs. Yeah. Jameer Gibbs. Everybody's like, what? How did he. Why are they drafting him so early? Turns out he was a game changer. Yeah.
Matt Castle
John Robinson, like I said, for Atlanta's the same way.
Bobby Bones
There's another one, though, a surprise that did not turn out so well, and that's the Falcons when they hop in at number eight at quarterback and now they have no quarterbacks.
Matt Castle
Yeah. They got two. Two is coming in.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Matt Castle
Yeah. It's going to be interesting to see what Kevin Stefanski does. He's been in a very difficult situation with QBs just over his head. Coaching care. You go, you start with Baker Mayfield,
Bobby Bones
then all of a sudden I hurt Baker Mayfield, too.
Matt Castle
That hurt. Baker Mayfield hurt?
Bobby Bones
No, a hurt.
Matt Castle
Yeah, a hurt.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Like he was playing hurts.
Matt Castle
First year they would go in the playoffs, he's the coach of the year, everything else. And then he's hurt the next year. And then they made the desean Watson trade, which. Can we look up how many games Deshaun Watson actually played for the Browns over the last. Was it four seasons?
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Even when he came back after his first injury. Yeah.
Matt Castle
It wasn't the same guy. Because if you were to watch the film from Houston of Deshaun Watson, he was awesome. Top five in the league.
Bobby Bones
He was awesome.
Matt Castle
Incredible. I remember going down there with the Titans one year, we went down to Houston, they did not punt until like five minutes left in the fourth quarter. He was marching up and down the field, making every single throw.
Kevin
19 games in four years.
Matt Castle
19 games in four years.
Bobby Bones
He's still on the depth chart for next year with the Browns and he's
Matt Castle
probably made what, 180 million at this point.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. I do think, though, going from the Browns to the Falcons is that step up.
Matt Castle
That's true. It is a step up. I think the Falcons have a good roster. They just now, once again are looking at the quarterback position going, is Penix going to be healthy? Are we going to go into the season with Tua? Can we.
Bobby Bones
Was Penix 8 in the draft?
Matt Castle
He was. And he was a stud in college. But it was the injury history.
Bobby Bones
But he was hurt at Indiana. Oh, he was in hurt in Washington. Yes, he was hurt.
Matt Castle
Acl, like, he was hurt everywhere. Everywhere. Like the red flags have to come up. And then, unfortunately, you hate to see that because he is a very good player.

Speaking of Sean McVay, the Rams considered shopping veteran wide receiver Devontae Adams in the offseason, but ultimately decided against it. We felt like it was best for our team and if we felt like that we would have done it, mcvay said for the LA Times. But we did not think it was the best for our team, so we're excited to be able to move forward with him. He told reporters he spoke Openly with a 33 year old receiver about potential trade talks. Boy, Adams was a beast this last year in the red zone. Yeah, especially in the in the 5, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 yard line.
Matt Castle
Yes he is. Well, you put him with a quarterback like Matt Stafford. That guy has proven that he's an elite wide receiver in the league. And of course if I'm the Rams, no chance of my letting him walk out of that building because you've got Pukinakua right there. You never know what when in the end is for Matt Stafford and he's still playing at such a high level obviously as the MVP for the league last year. So you want to give him every resource possible to go out there and perform at the best level. And when you have devonte Adams opposite of Puka Nakua, you're putting him in the best position to be successful. And then they go out and what do they do in free agency? They addressed an issue at the. At the cornerback position because they went and basically took both of Kansas city's star corners, McDuffie and Jalen Watson. Jalen Watson. And brought them in and filled two major holes. I think if they have those guys last year, we might be telling a different story about who's in the Super Bowl.
Bobby Bones
Devonte Adams had 14 touchdowns last year. Talk about that's a fantasy story, too. Like a fifth or sixth round fantasy pick.
Matt Castle
No doubt.
Bobby Bones
Jeez. All right, give me one more. What do you got over there?
Matt Castle
All right. Seahawks to be featured on hard knocks summer 2026. Pat's 2027.
Bobby Bones
They're announcing two years out.
Matt Castle
Yeah, I guess so.
Bobby Bones
Is it just Pats you've committed. You can't back out.
Matt Castle
Yeah, you can't back out. Sorry. You signed a contract. Braves. We got you, I think. Do you watch the show?
Bobby Bones
I used to watch it religiously.
Matt Castle
I think it's great television.
Bobby Bones
But then they started doing mid season.
Matt Castle
Yeah, don't give me mid season.
Bobby Bones
Mid season with the Dolphins. I like it because there's no football on. It's kind of the intro back to football.
Matt Castle
Right.
Bobby Bones
So whenever you're starving for football, it's on. You watch it. And then once season starts, you don't need to watch the midseason because you have football.
Matt Castle
We've got football.
Bobby Bones
So, yes, I have watched many seasons, probably every one of them. But I was a religious watcher. A little less now.
Matt Castle
I'm kind of excited about that. I mean, the reigning super bowl champion is that often that they get the reigning super bowl champion to come on Hard Knocks.
Kevin
The only one was the Ravens way back in the day.
Matt Castle
Ravens. That's right. Were they the first ones? Yeah, they were the first ones for Hard Knocks. So this will be the only. The second time ever that they've actually had a reigning super bowl champion. That would be actually interesting. Watch.
Bobby Bones
Did you guys ever have cameras in your locker room?
Matt Castle
All the time. Especially post game. Because it was all the media stuff for their actual outlets and they put it out and stuff like that. But after games, we would. Not necessarily during the week of practice or anything like that. I can't remember us, like, having a documentary. I think after I left, they did do that thing on Bill Belichick. Where they followed throughout the season, him on the field, coaching, doing all the introspective that he has. So they did that, but. But not when I was there. We never had Hard Knocks or anybody come around and do anything for us.
Bobby Bones
Do you watch much college basketball?
Matt Castle
Oh, dude, I watch. Well, a lot of the games are lame. I mean, poor Tennessee could have just got. Absolutely.
Bobby Bones
How about Michigan?
Matt Castle
Michigan. My God, Michigan's good.
Bobby Bones
I think Tennessee was good. They got to the Elite Eight year in a row.
Matt Castle
Yeah, that was outstanding. Great season.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Matt Castle
But just that that game itself was just a blowout and wasn't much of a game to watch. And then I was about to turn off the Yukon Duke game. They're down 19 points. I was like, oh, my God, this is going to happen all over. I stuck it out. You did? Because I was barbecuing. There's nothing else on. I'm watching that game. And then it was that steady climb back into the game. And then the end of the game, I was just. I yelled out loud. I said, oh, my God, he hit the. I mean, that was wild. That was wild.
Bobby Bones
I was going to ask if you watched it, because after Arkansas lost, I didn't watch any. I watched every game for the first time ever up until the Elite Eight because we had a baby. Yeah. That's crazy. And so.
Matt Castle
It was crazy.
Bobby Bones
I watched every game.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And so. And if there were two on at the same time, I'd split box them or flip back and forth, but there was nothing else for me to do except sit with the baby and watch the games. And so Arkansas had a fair year. Arizona is really good.
Matt Castle
We got beat by Arizona, so Arizona's outstanding.
Bobby Bones
I decided I wasn't going to watch any more games, and I saw Duke just running it up on Yukon, and I was like, there's no need for me to flip over. And then I saw that UConn had got back within a couple. And as soon as I flipped it
Matt Castle
back over is when they hit the shot.
Bobby Bones
It was right before the shot happened. Like, I totally cheated and got the best, like, 30 seconds before that. And I just. Unbelievable.
Matt Castle
Unbelievable.
Bobby Bones
Do you have a favorite clutch moment of your career?
Matt Castle
Gosh, what a good question. I would have to reflect back on a clutch moment in my career that
Bobby Bones
you're really proud of. And you're like, that was clutch. They asked for it, they got it.
Matt Castle
There's so many in my career.
Bobby Bones
I hear you. It's hard to pick one.
Matt Castle
It's really hard to pick one. I do remember in 2008, we were up in Seattle and it was back and forth. Matt Hasselbeck was the quarterback for Seattle and it was late in the game, we needed a play. They're blitzing off the edge and Randy was running a deep corner route and I saw him make his break and I let it go right before getting just absolutely melee in my face. He catches it, puts us in the red zone, we go down. I think we were on the three yard line, we ran this little pick play. Walker goes out, hit him in stride on a blitz, zero. Look. And we took the lead, ended up winning the game, which was huge because the divisional race at that time was pretty straightforward. And so I think that that was. I don't know if it was for my career, but I do vividly remember that game of being. Every play felt like a big play, especially running down the stretch of. You have to make the throws. When you need to make the throws, they're going to pressure you, you're going to get hit. But can you make the throws under immense pressure. So. But that's always the case with the quarterback position.
Bobby Bones
Whenever you're getting hit, let's say that ball, specifically you're throwing a ball, you get hit right away. Are you listening to the crowd to tell if you caught it or not?
Matt Castle
100%. Like, you get hit, you have no idea what, what happened with the play. But if you're on, if you're the away team, you just listen to. Oh, like. Because they'll let you know if they're cheering wildly, guess what? Incomplete pass. If not, you're like, yes. The best ones are the ones down the field. When you're throwing a deep post or a go route, you get the hell knocked out of you. You're on your back once again. You're just kind of listening to the crowd and all of a sudden you realize, oh, yeah, baby, I hit it. You have no idea where the ball ended up or how the catch was made. But it's pretty sweet when that happens.
Bobby Bones
You ever do the touchdown while on the ground? You're laying there, you're like, yeah, that you're on the ground.
Matt Castle
Only when the big boys come and pick me up and be like, let's go. And you're like, yeah, I have no idea what happened.
Bobby Bones
That's got to be an awesome feeling.
Matt Castle
It's awesome. It's really not until the next day when you watch the film that you actually get to see what the hell transpired on the play. But you know that something good happened.
Bobby Bones
So.
Matt Castle
Yeah. Are you watching any series right now? Come on. You had to watch some television.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I watched a lot of series. I watched a couple documentaries, music documentaries. Devo, Red Hot Chili Peppers. We're good.
Matt Castle
How is the Red Hot. I love Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Bobby Bones
It's about one of their founding members that died before they got famous. So it's very much not about their successes, but they had a guy named Hillel who was a guitarist for them, and it's all of them talking about that. So it's like early, early and only early, early. So if you're a Chili Peppers fan, I think you'll like it. Not you, but just whoever's listening. But if you're just kind of mid on them, I don't think it's for you. The Devo was good. We watched. Have you watched Paradise?
Matt Castle
No.
Bobby Bones
On Hulu. It's the best show on tv.
Matt Castle
Best show on television.
Kevin
Yeah.
Matt Castle
Really? What's Paradise?
Bobby Bones
There's two seasons now. Now the show has been shared so much. I think I can tell you the episode one twist.
Matt Castle
Yeah, you can go ahead and tell me.
Bobby Bones
Well, even with listeners listening, I definitely wouldn't want to spoil something for sure.
Matt Castle
Sorry, listeners. We're gonna tell you what happens in Paradise. If you don't want to know, turn off.
Bobby Bones
No, I'm not telling you what happens in Paradise. But it's the episode one. The very first. Because when that show was being teased by abc.
Matt Castle
This is fictional.
Bobby Bones
Yes. They were going, hey, here's the show. Sterling K. Brown, who was in this Is Us. You familiar with this Is Us?
Matt Castle
Mm.
Bobby Bones
So Sterling K. Brown is in the Secret Service protecting the President. It's James Marsden. And in the commercial, they were asking Sterling K. Brown on a lie detector if he's the one that was trying to kill the President. He's like, no. And they're like, okay, you're telling the truth. That kind of thing. So I was like, oh, I'm in.
Matt Castle
Yeah. Anything like CIA, FBI, whatever. Killing.
Bobby Bones
It turns out. Because that's what you think going into Turns out, what the show is, is he is Secret Service for the President. There was a disaster, like environmental disaster, massive earthquake that happened, and basically the planet's going to die. So they've secretly built this massive city in a mountain, and they're flown out to live in it while the rest of the world goes into.
Matt Castle
That is a major twist.
Bobby Bones
Major twist. Because you don't know that's what it is until the first. Midway through the first episode, and then it's them trying to navigate living it's awesome. And it's a network show, so you don't think it's going to be that good.
Matt Castle
So it's really a love story.
Bobby Bones
There's some love in it if that's what you're chasing.
Matt Castle
It's basically a president saying, look, the earth's going to die, but I'm going to live because I've got my bunker.
Bobby Bones
I'll say no more because me saying any more. Are you guys watching Paradise?
Kevin
I haven't.
Bobby Bones
I watched the first few episodes.
Matt Castle
I got to catch up, but it blew my mind.
Bobby Bones
There's two whole two seasons now. Yeah.
Matt Castle
Okay, so I'm in. Have you seen the Netflix series Sprint? So it's basically about our Olympic sprinters. And season one goes through the world championships leading up to the Olympic year. And it's amazing. It's like no Lyles, all the female sprinters that you're making. Sprinters. It's sprinters from all over the world, but it's the behind. It's basically the hard knocks of the sprint season. And you follow these characters and it's really just. It's all about the sprinters, the 100 to 200 four by one. And it's an exceptional documentary. Yeah, it's just.
Bobby Bones
I would never hop into that. Why did you pick that?
Matt Castle
I don't know. It was just something about the. Actually, my wife recommended it is really why I did. And she started to watch it and it's unbelievable. Like these sprinters and the amount of pressure that builds going into worlds. But then your Olympic year, once every four years, one opportunity to go run your best race of the season and win gold medal because like they said, you could be a world champion, but you're not a gold medalist. And so it goes through the psychological profiling of these athletes and how they prepare and the work that they put in and just the dedication it takes to be at that level. And there's only so many sprints. I mean, at the end of the day, there was what, 10100 meter sprinters running four gold. So you're the 10 best in the world. And it was literally him putting his head across before another guy's chin cross.
Bobby Bones
It's just.
Matt Castle
It's super intense. It's a good watch. And you actually fall in love with a lot of these sprinters.
Bobby Bones
You guys watch that? Heard of it?
Kevin
I've seen it, but like I've seen it on Netflix, but I haven't watched it yet.
Bobby Bones
Same.
Matt Castle
Yeah, we'll get on it, guys.
Bobby Bones
Hey, real question. Answer this Honestly, does my hit ever pop up on your Netflix?
Matt Castle
Your head? Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Like my show?
Matt Castle
Yes, all the time.
Bobby Bones
It does pop up.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
No, I'm serious.
Matt Castle
No, I'm being dead serious.
Bobby Bones
Okay. I didn't, because my algorithm shows me. Me.
Matt Castle
Oh, shocking.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
Matt Castle
All your search engine is Bobby Buns.
Bobby Bones
Well, no, I don't know how they know. I didn't look to find it. I did look to find it because sometimes I want to check and see how my show's doing because my interview show, the Bobby cast, is up on Netflix and I just want crushing. It does. Yeah, it does pretty well. But I didn't. I never know if anybody else sees it.
Matt Castle
Yeah, as soon as you put it.
Bobby Bones
But you've never searched for me, so why would it pop up all the time?
Matt Castle
My kids have watched your. What's it, Bear Gryll stuff.
Bobby Bones
Oh, yeah, yeah.
Matt Castle
Oh, yeah. When you told me that. We watched it as a family. Don't kid yourself. My kids know you, even though you never come around anymore.
Bobby Bones
Uncle Bobby, I never anymore.
Matt Castle
Anymore never come around.
Bobby Bones
I watch man in Hightower. Man in the Hightower.
Matt Castle
Have you seen that?
Bobby Bones
It's old now. I think it ended in 2019. But Netflix just got it. And so that they'll do that now. They'll buy shows.
Matt Castle
Right?
Bobby Bones
Like, even when they bought Seinfeld a couple of years ago, that's a big deal. Like, Seinfeld's coming to Netflix, so they bought man in the Hightower. And it's basically a different version of what would have happened if we'd have lost World War II because of America is now split in half. The right side of America is Germany and the left side is Japan. And they're owning. And it's an awesome concept. It gets. It gets about. Season four starts to water itself down a little bit. But do you ever watch the Diplomatic?
Matt Castle
Yes, I've seen the Diplomat.
Bobby Bones
So season one, awesome. Season two, even better. Season three, even freaking better. And Keri Russell and her husband.
Matt Castle
I love Carrie Russell.
Bobby Bones
Me too.
Matt Castle
She's amazing.
Bobby Bones
Always. Even when I was a kid, like, I loved it for different reasons.
Matt Castle
Then, of course, she did. Me too.
Bobby Bones
Her husband and diplomat is a guy named Hal, but he's the main character. A Nazi. And man in Hightower. Yeah, pretty good. High Castle. Oh, is that what it's called? High Castle? Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Matt Castle
Man in the Hightower.
Bobby Bones
Different show. Dude, don't be stupid. Don't ever question me. My bad. I watched Detective. It looks like Detective Hole. But it's Detective Hole A that pop across anybody's algorithms on Netflix.
Matt Castle
Hole A, not Hole B. Hole A.
Bobby Bones
Well, I thought it was just Detective. I was like, why is it Detective Hole? I don't want to watch a Detective Hole show. But it's a show from. I think it's Denmark. And so we put English on the subtitles and make them speak English so it doesn't always match their mouth. But it's based off a book. It's really good. If you can take that.
Matt Castle
Dude, I opened up Pandora's box when I said, you watch anything right now?
Bobby Bones
That's all we do. We have a newborn. I go to work.
Matt Castle
I tell you. That's what I figured.
Kevin
Norway, by the way.
Bobby Bones
It's Norway.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Okay. Yeah, one of those.
Matt Castle
Yeah, he's in it. The Netherlands.
Bobby Bones
Oh, Norway. Yeah. I went to Norway with Bear Grylls as a comeback. My first episode on Bear Grylls, that's
Matt Castle
when you went to Norway. The Dead Sheep in the water. Yeah, that's right.
Bobby Bones
That show's coming back. By the way. Running Wild with Bear Girls has been bought by Fox now, and it's gonna be a primetime show for like, eight weeks.
Matt Castle
Let's go.
Kevin
Are you going back?
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I've already done twice.
Matt Castle
Come on, you can do it again.
Bobby Bones
I got enough.
Matt Castle
You're a heavy hitter.
Bobby Bones
I don't think so. Not anymore. And I can't now because you literally could die doing that show.
Matt Castle
They still are pretty protective.
Bobby Bones
Absolutely. But you're still falling off. You're still going outside the cliffs. Who.
Matt Castle
Has anybody ever truly gotten hurt?
Bobby Bones
I asked him that, and he said the celebrities that come on that show, they will, based on their athleticism, give the celebrities certain things to do. And those that don't have a lot of athleticism, they won't. They'll really.
Matt Castle
We can hike.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. Like, we hiked like 15 miles and then fell off the side of cliffs. I think they felt pretty good about me. And you're right. It's as safe as you could possibly be.
Matt Castle
Right.
Bobby Bones
But that doesn't mean. But no, I don't think there are any massive.
Matt Castle
Any bad. So it's you, it's Bear, and then there's a camera guy that follows you around everywhere.
Bobby Bones
There are three camera guys that are chasing us. You never stop. There's never like, okay, guys, we need to shoot this over. In this point, you're going. You're mic the whole time. What was super interesting about that show and haven't thought about this in a long time. Is Bear would hire Special forces guys to do cameras. Not camera. He would teach Special Forces to be cameramen, not teach cameramen how to do climbing and stuff.
Matt Castle
Interesting.
Bobby Bones
So all the guys that were working the crew, dude, they were doing it. There's freaking Special Forces, like, he was that then learned how to do cameras. And there was a guy that was running like a drone, and he was. We were climbing and he was like, maybe professional climber that Bear had taught how to run drone. And he was like, climbing up stuff. It's wild. And you're surrounded by. Not only. It's you and Bear and a main safety guy that's like bear's guy for 20 years, but all the camera guys are Special forces guys. So if you break a leg or you're dying, like, there's like nine people there that can save you.
Matt Castle
They're good to go.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, yeah.
Matt Castle
They're all medics. They know what's going on.
Bobby Bones
They're all medics. Yeah, you're right.
Matt Castle
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Nicest guy, though. Like, could not be more lovely. And you're going hard for 12 hours on that show because I've done it twice now. You're going hard for 12 hours, but then at night you're in the woods or wherever you are, like, in Norway. I wouldn't say it was the woods. It was like, outside in a few hours.
Matt Castle
That's when it gets deep, right? That's when he likes to have those deep.
Bobby Bones
No cameras. Once the cameras leave. He's even nicer at night.
Matt Castle
The cameras.
Bobby Bones
Well, yeah, you're just in two tents. There are no cameras there. And so that's when you're really just getting to know him. Yeah, we invited him to our wedding. He was shooting, but we. Because my wife did the second episode. She wasn't my wife then, and she loved him so much. She was like, we have to have Bear come to our wedding. So we invited him and he was like, I'm shooting in like a stan or something. I don't know. One of those countries.
Matt Castle
What about the rap? Like, after you're done, right, they drop you off at your destination. You're done. Like, do they have, like a little party to say you're exhausted, you don't want a party. Like, hey, it's been cool. I'm going to go get a shower.
Bobby Bones
My wife and I, when we did the second episode, because the first one was in Norway and the second one, we were shooting it during COVID so we couldn't leave the country, but we went into some mountains in Northern California, Massive mountains. And it was so cold that when we got our tent to sleep, it was the coldest I've ever been. And so we're like. One of our sleeping bags ripped. We're like trying to just stay. There's nothing romantic about it. It was just her and I cuddling. No. We're like screaming our bodies together in a non romantic way because it's so cold. It was negative two.
Matt Castle
Oh, that is freezing.
Bobby Bones
And all we were in was a tent.
Matt Castle
I thought you were gonna say like 20 something.
Bobby Bones
Nope, negative.
Matt Castle
Okay. That is freezing cold.
Bobby Bones
And so when it was over, because we had to like hop in helicopters on the show and do all this stuff, when it was over, we could not get back to our hotel room fast enough for a hot shower. There's no party, right? Yeah, but it's great. He is the greatest. Like, could not say enough nice things about him. And that show is real. There's nothing about the show that's faked or pulled off. They just won't put you in a situation that you don't have the physical capability to defeat.
Matt Castle
Got it. Got it. Yeah. So they're gonna play to your strengths, I guess.
Bobby Bones
My strengths being awesome. Cause we did a lot of great stuff.
Matt Castle
Nothing off limits.
Bobby Bones
Hey, she, my wife just crushed going off the sides of cliffs.
Matt Castle
That's what you said. You said she was a beast.
Bobby Bones
And she was freaked out about it. And I had kind of knew what to expect in that show. I hate heights.
Matt Castle
You hate heights. And you went and did that show.
Bobby Bones
Dude, I got above the Grand Canyon and cleaned the bottom of that sky bridge 4,000ft over on a single rope. I got a show on Nat Geo because my episode of Berry Girls did so well. That's the reason I got the show.
Matt Castle
No, I'm saying there's nothing you can't do.
Bobby Bones
Bobby, I'm going to show you. This is my wife. So this is one of the cliffs we went off of. That's just the top of it. Right? So this is the. I'm going to show you her.
Matt Castle
Hold on.
Bobby Bones
So this is her. And if you zoom out, just zoom out with your hand. That's just the top of that cliff.
Matt Castle
That is an enormous cliff.
Bobby Bones
And she had never done that before. And that's her just going off of it.
Matt Castle
She had no worries. Just.
Bobby Bones
No, there were lots of worries.
Matt Castle
Yeah, I was going to say probably a lot of worries. But she was like, all right, I'm in.
Bobby Bones
To do the show or do the cliff? Because you really don't have. When you get there. You don't really have a choice.
Matt Castle
This is the only way we can get down.
Bobby Bones
I guess you could say no, but this is when you do the heart to hearts. Like, that's us. And you're so happy to do the sit down Heart to hearts during the taping because you're so tired.
Matt Castle
Yeah. You're just like, okay, talk to me.
Bobby Bones
And there was no food. Really?
Matt Castle
You didn't kill anything on this one? No.
Bobby Bones
There was no animals, so no joking. Bear had two bologna sandwiches in his pockets and that was our whole food for the day. We went down and did. Found some snails and ate them. I don't know if I go.
Matt Castle
That's cargo.
Bobby Bones
That's the joke. But it was like, if you go to Disney and you look up bear. Girls, I think we're on season. I think I'm on season five and together her and I are on six. Something like that. It wouldn't trade the experience for the world. It was awesome. Would never do it again.
Matt Castle
Never do it again.
Bobby Bones
I said it the first time, too.
Matt Castle
You might.
Bobby Bones
And she. She was like, we'll go together. Yeah.
Matt Castle
Hopefully somewhere cold. Negative four degrees. Dude.
Bobby Bones
It's miserable.
Matt Castle
Cuddle. All right, everybody. Good.
Bobby Bones
Kevin, you have anything on your mind before we jump?
Kevin
Yeah, no, I'm just. We talked about it early on. Happy to see you join dad life, man.
Matt Castle
Yeah, we're all here.
Bobby Bones
I'm ready to lead the group.
Matt Castle
Experience.
Bobby Bones
Follow me, guys. I got all the answers.
Matt Castle
Yeah. I love it.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. I don't know. It's pretty easy.
Matt Castle
I feel like for the men, it's a lot easier early on. You're just like. You're there, as you said, for support factor because there's nothing that you can provide. Yeah. You're right for that child where mama bear can provide a lot of it. The love and all that stuff I get. But mom is really important. But you are important in my eyes. Thank you.
Bobby Bones
That's all I wanted to hear.
Matt Castle
The child's going to be loving her daddy.
Bobby Bones
There you have it.
Matt Castle
It's awesome.
Bobby Bones
I do hear, though, from. And you'd be the person to talk to about this, that when you have a girl, it's awesome. The first years. And it gets difficult in teenage years.
Matt Castle
Oh, yeah.
Bobby Bones
Where you have a boy, it's like they're just so much. And then as they get older, it gets a little easier.
Matt Castle
It actually has come to fruition. Full circle for me. Yep. Yeah. The girls, it's just a different challenge when hormones. Hormones and boys and friend groups and. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Girls are mean, man.
Matt Castle
Man, that can be mean to.
Bobby Bones
Girls are mean.
Matt Castle
Boys are kind of like, hey, if we got a problem, let's handle it, whatever it might be. But it's not like the Caddy behind the back, this, that, and the other. And boys are. Yeah, they're out of control when they're younger and all that stuff because they're just raging bulls. But as they get older, it's almost like it gets easier because they start to understand what. What's to be expected. They kind of mellow out a little bit. Now. There's always that innate alpha mentality in males that they're going to challenge you in some way to see how far they can take dad before you nip it. Like, so there's that sometimes because they kind of grown into their own and starting to feel their oats a little bit. But girls are just different. You know, it goes from one year of they're sitting next to you on the couch and they're cuddly, they want to be near you. Then the next year, you're like, dad, dad, turn down the music. Like, make sure you don't say this or don't come up and hug me. It's real. I walked into a basketball game one time, and they're like, hi. I was like, what?
Kevin
I'm at the beginning stage right now.
Matt Castle
You know what happens at that point if you do that to dad? Dad's immediately going to come over and try to pick you up in front of everybody and hug you. Maybe that's the embarrassing part. Yeah. But, yeah, it's two completely different modes of operation when you have girls versus boys. So enjoy every bit.
Bobby Bones
I'm what, four kids away from getting a spur van like you?
Matt Castle
Dude, it's gonna be awesome.
Bobby Bones
61 still pumping them out.
Matt Castle
Yeah, dude, it'll be great.
Bobby Bones
I'm Robert De Niro. Al Pacino. They're in their 80s putting kids out.
Matt Castle
Baldwin, doesn't he.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, he had a bunch on his second wife. That'll do it for us. Thank you guys for being here. We'll see you guys next week. As always, we've had lots to say. Bye, everybody.
