Did not know he was getting the job. No, Knew nothing of it. I knew he had interviewed, but I don't know him. But I do have a close friend that's friends with him and he was like, he's the greatest guy. And I'm like, but he's a good coach. He's like, yeah, he's a good coach. He's also the greatest guy. And I'm like, great.

Yeah, I don't even care if it's a good guy. Just don't get in trouble.

Yeah. How about Lane Kefin, too? That was a big story.

[Bobby Bones]

Did you ever. When he was at usc.

[Matt Castle]

Yeah, he was with me at usc.

[Bobby Bones]

He was with me at usc and he was just. Punk little kid came in. It was literally his first year coaching. And the reason he got the job Was because Monty Kiffin, his father, was close with Pete Carroll. But Monty used to come up there to the facility all the time, and you could tell he, he understood football. He was good. He was our tight ends coach at the time. And so I'll never forget there was one story.

[Bobby Bones]

Lane or Monty Lane. Lane.

[Matt Castle]

Lane was a tight ends coach.

[Bobby Bones]

Were you tied in then? Because, remember, they moved to tight end.

[Matt Castle]

So I had to move over to tight ends, I mean, tight end, my junior year, because we had injuries, you know, and I didn't want to take up too much of the shine at the quarterback. So I went over and played some tight end special teams. Well, I do remember one practice and I was. I was running a route and he was talking smack to me. I think I might have dropped the ball or something like that. And I said something back to him like this, that or the other. And he tried to come at me and he tried to, like, grab my shoulder and I literally body checked him.

[Matt Castle]

I said, don't ever put your hands up. I mean, just the dumbest thing I could have possibly done as a player. But at the same time after that, we were totally cool and got along. But like, we laughed about it years later. But it's just incredible, his rise and where he is. But this entire situation has been front and center of every media outlet and everybody's got an opinion and everything like that. And I've known him for a really long time. He's a hell of a football coach.

[Bobby Bones]

Okay, let's go back to what you talked about.

[Matt Castle]

Yeah.

[Bobby Bones]

Would you put him better guy. Better guy or better coach?

[Matt Castle]

Better coach. Good guy. Better. But from what I understand, though, at Ole Miss, dude, everything, he's changed his life. He doesn't drink anymore, he doesn't eat salt, you know, does hot saunas, does all those things. So he's in a good mental spot.

[Bobby Bones]

I hear you.

[Matt Castle]

Yeah. So, dude, we got into it. It's one of those things, like, people don't understand. There's coaches and players in the dynamic, and you get into these fiery situations. It might be practice, it might be a game. And you guys only, like a lot of fans only see it on game day when there's this blow up. But that is a natural occurrence. That happens a lot just because of the intensity of the sport, the fire and the what you just. What just happened. And somebody yells at you right away and the competitor in you all of a sudden explodes. You don't mean it to, but at the same time your emotions get the best of you. But most people are able to put it by em. And then you come together after and you're like, I apologize. I shouldn't have done that. Boom, boom. You work it out and move on.

[Bobby Bones]

Was a bit of it because you didn't want to be playing tight end anyway.

[Matt Castle]

Probably. There's a lot of frustration there that I was running routes and I had to block a wide, wide nine technique. And I'm like, I'm half this dude's size. I mean, I used to get in fights with teammates during run drills all the time, but, you know, you got to have a little edge when you play tight end, so. And I think also the crazy part in the dynamic of that was he was such a young coach at the time. He might have been 25, 26 when he played.

[Bobby Bones]

So not much older than you.

[Matt Castle]

Not that much older. Yeah. And so there was. There was that dynamic as well, that maybe you felt like, you're screaming at me, okay, dude, I'm. I'm getting close to your age.

[Bobby Bones]

Yes.

At nine and three, Devonte Adams leads all receivers with 14 touchdowns. The next closest receiver is a Monroe St. Brown at 9. Yeah, he's been catching, even catching touchdown after touchdown. Crazy. I mean, they've played 12 games. He has 14 touchdowns.

And then when you have Puka Nakua on the opposite side, that's why he.

No, every game there's a version of this every week. I know, but you are what your record says you are. They're 10 and 2.

They're battle test. And that defense is elite.

[Bobby Bones]

The fact that Sartain is back, by the way, we're not acting like we discovered certain good. He was the NFL defensive player of the year last year. So this is not a hot take that Sertain's good, but that he's. He's so freaking good. I forget how good he is until I watch him again.

[Matt Castle]

Right. Because he will lock down your number one wide receiver. You can put him on an island anywhere. Eliminated. And the other part about his game is he can play outside, he can play inside. And you say, hey, take this guy away.

There are only like two guys in the NFL right now that I feel very Revis about because every seven or eight years there's one or two, right? And it's certain. And Stingley with the Texas, he's outstanding as well. Like those dudes. It's just like, here's a third of the field, right? You got this taken care of. Okay, when so you do the power rankings everything. But when I'm looking at this year, I'm sitting there and saying there's not like that dominant team that you feel like is unbeatable where in years past when The Chiefs are 15 and 2 or the Ravens were 14 and 3 and they're hitting their stride and you don't think anybody can beat them. I don't think that there's a team in the NFL right now that you can sit there and confidently say they don't have maybe some whole. I think the. Probably the Rams are the closest to the most complete team that we know know of. But this year is so wide open. It's. It's a fascinating year in my opinion because there is a lot of parity and you see upsets every week. You see Carolina beat the Rams, you see Philly get upset by Chicago, you see the Ravens get beat by the Bengals at which we think, oh, the Ravens are made whole, they're healthy, all these different things. So I just think it's a really interesting year for the league itself because there are legitimately no number one team that you go, oh well this team's going to be a problem right now when they get to playoffs.

They could establish the run dominant there, but when they wanted to turn it on and throw the football, they could do that. But they're out of sorts in every which way. Because I know that he was out that there's hope that he could potentially come back.

What are they feeding them in San Francisco? Because they're hurt every game for two years. We need more countdowns.

Four or five years. They've always have like they're decimated more than any other team.

No, but Dak. Dak's been playing out his mind. But he always has been a solid quarterback in the top 10, maybe top five at times. I just think that the biggest part of any quarterback for their career to be seen as that guy is you got to win a playoff game and whether it's him, whether it's Lamar, because I think that people view Lamar. I feel like people view Lamar much better than Dak because of his MVPs and what he's accomplished in the regular season. But at the same time, he hasn't made any noise in the playoffs and that's always the pushback from everybody as well. He can't win in the playoffs.

Next up, Justin Herbert. Hand fracture. He's dealing with a fracture to the back of his left non throwing hand. He did undergo surgery earlier in the week to fix it. He said he is treating it as if he's playing Monday.

Yeah, the, the big thing about that, when you have a hand injury, especially your left hand, thank God it's your non throwing hand. But you're not going to be able to get under center.

[Bobby Bones]

And that leads to me talking about Aaron Rodgers because he has a fracture in his hand still and his nose busted. But I'm glad you said that because he did not play under center for that reason because his non throwing hand.

[Matt Castle]

Right.

[Bobby Bones]

Had his wrist. Right wrist had a fracture. So when you. Please elaborate. When you're under center, is it because the impact of the ball hitting impact of the ball.

[Matt Castle]

And also probably you don't have the same strength in that hand and so you don't just. You might fumble that snap. So they're going to put you probably in the pistol to make it a lot easier for you to get the ball. You're not going to take the impact on the hand. But that what that changes. Especially for an offense like the Chargers or the Steelers when they operate a lot under center and set up their play action games and all their runs go from under center, that changes the way the defense looks and how they respond to it. Because you're in pistol, you'll still be able to run play action. It's just not as effective as when you're under center and full selling the run. It's interesting.

[Bobby Bones]

Diggs with the Cowboys knee injury. They opened a 21 day practice window. Says he hopes to play versus the Lions, which is this week. He's been hurt for a bit, so the Cowboys would love to have him back. Yeah, that would be huge, especially in their elimination game.

[Matt Castle]

And Joey Bose's hamstring. He left the game early Sunday, but McDermott says he's day to day.

Well, Joey, let's get you back too, buddy. They, they've had some injuries, man. They've been banged up as well. I mean, there's a lot of injuries, but that's this time of year too, I feel like.

And I might be completely wrong and off base on this, but there aren't as many.

Superstars that are gone at this point of the season as there were the last few years.

I think that you're probably right. I don't know what the status would be, but I'd say that there's less quarterbacks out.

And maybe that's why I feel that.

Way because quarterbacks over the last few years have taken a big hit where you're seeing a lot of guys out. I mean, Kyler Murray's out. One that I can think of right now off the top of my head.

Kyler Murray's out, though, because they just don't want to play him.

Don't wait. Aren't they soft benching?

That's part of it. Because Jacoby Brissette's been balling, I mean.

And they're going to trade Murray, so.

But I'm saying quarterbacks that you've seen in the past that have just been out for the entire season, you're not, you're not really seeing that as much.

Yeah, because we just read that and like the two quarterbacks I mentioned are still playing. They're just like hurt but still playing. But otherwise it's defensive guys and not the defensive guys don't matter. But it's an offensive league.

And it's a face of the league is the quarterback. Right.

You know the Steelers chant for Mike Tomlin. Fire Mike Tomlin. I think it's interesting because obviously he's one of the most well respected coaches in all the NFL. I know that. What? They haven't won a playoff game since, what was it, 2017.

Oh, well, it's been that long.

[Matt Castle]

I know they've constantly been around. They've not been below, they've not been. They've been 500 and a little above. They've been flirting with it.

Right. And. And that's the part where you look at it and you go, okay, since 2017, that's a long time that you haven't won a playoff game. And I understand the frustration of the fans and the Steeler Nation and all that stuff, but maybe it is time for Mike Tomlin to move on. I don't think that they're going to fire him because I don't think that that organization fires coaches like that. And he's. I think his contract's up in 2027, but at the end of the day, maybe starting at a new place similar to an Andy Reid. Right. It kind of had run its course in Philadelphia. He gets a fresh start with the Kansas City Chiefs. And you look at some of these jobs like the Giants, would they not love to have Mike Tomlin come in with a guy that they already have a quarterback. You saw it happen with the Patriots last year. When Mike Vrabel comes in, they've already got a quarterback. The biggest issue for the Steelers since that time period once Roethlisberger left is they have no consistency at the quarterback position. And so you go to a place that even help. You don't know what's going to happen with the Bengals. Are they going to keep their coach? I don't know. But would you not want.

Arizona is not going to keep their coach, but I don't think he wants.

[Matt Castle]

To go to Arizona. I don't know if he'd want to go to Arizona, but he'll be the hottest commodity out there. But it just might. It might have run its course, is what I'm saying with the Steelers, because you brought it up a few weeks ago. The hardest part about the Steelers is they're constantly over.500, but they're never in a position to where they can go get a top 10 draft pick and dedicate that to a young quarterback that they could maybe potentially develop, build a program around.

It's winning purgatory.

Yeah, it's winning purgatory. We're winning enough. We're making the playoffs, but we're not winning playoff games. And we don't have a high enough draft pick to change the future of our franchise because we can't find a quarterback.

I think a change of scenery would be awesome. And a change of scenery doesn't always mean that it's been a failure. And I don't think this would be considered a failure at all.

No. Absolutely no. Nobody in their right mind would say Mike Tomlin's tenure at all with the Steelers have been a failure. It's just sometimes the organization needs a change. He might need a change. And when that happens, I just used a few examples. You're sitting there going, okay, he's still that guy, and he's young enough to be able to go do it.

Done. Just finished the last week, so 13 weeks straight. Hitting the road hard. No home for the holidays. I'm all yours, babe.

I didn't like that you said to your wife, I'm back. I'm all yours.

She's like, go on the road again.

Does she like it that you got some time to go do stuff?

[Matt Castle]

I think that she'll appreciate me being home on the weekends. I mean, it's a lot on her, man. She takes on when I leave on Thursdays, she's got the kids, and then, like, Friday nights usually were the football nights. And she would take all five kids to the football game because that's kind of like the social event for school. And then weekends, we've got some different activities, whether it's a birthday party or sports event or something like that. So it's a lot on her during season. So I'm sure she's gonna appreciate me being home.

[Bobby Bones]

I know I will.

[Matt Castle]

You know what? I appreciate that. Too bad we can't go golf now. I know.

[Bobby Bones]

I tried many times.

Well, I go this week on Friday. I've been going to rehab twice a week.

[Matt Castle]

Is it just mobility stuff or the band work, trying to strengthen the muscles and doing all that stuff?

[Bobby Bones]

And also they have this. It's two really cool things. And I'm sure as a professional athlete, you got to experience the technological side of rehabilitation.

[Matt Castle]

It's crazy.

[Bobby Bones]

It's crazy. But there's this one thing, and they do. And I'm familiar a bit with a lymphatic massage, where it's not like a massage for your muscles, but it basically drains your lymphatic system all the excess liquid. I could be saying it wrong.

[Matt Castle]

No, you're doing great.

[Bobby Bones]

Thank you. And they have this. It's basically a current where the guy, my physical therapist, puts it on his belt so it's connected to him. It runs through the machine. And then I hold It. But then when he touches my ankle, it's an electric current. And so as he's on my ankle and it's like a. Like he's got gloves on.

[Matt Castle]

Yeah, it's like electric shock on the little. The powder on there.

[Bobby Bones]

It's crazy. It's crazy.

[Matt Castle]

It's wild, right?

[Bobby Bones]

Yep. And so that is pretty cool. And the other thing, it works.

[Matt Castle]

Some of these things that they do. I'm not going to lie. Probably there's definitely scientific evidence if they're using it, but some of them, I'm like, I just don't know if that's working much.

[Bobby Bones]

There's also a machine that they use. I wish I knew the name of it. And they wrap it around your foot and it's got a tube to it, and it's like ice, but there's no ice. It's called a game changer or something.

[Matt Castle]

Oh, it's the best thing ever. It's like the little black box right there. And they put ice in there with water, and that cold water runs through and wraps.

[Bobby Bones]

Oh, I don't know if it's that, but that's also cool.

[Matt Castle]

It's fantastic.

[Bobby Bones]

It's like. Like electricity makes it cold as it's on your foot and it's instant and it freezes.

[Matt Castle]

Normally, some. Some surgeons, like my brother, just got his shoulder redone, and they gave it to him from the doctor's office because the machine. The machine.

Well, it's probably. I mean, they let him borrow it.
