When Kohler, global design leader in luxurious kitchen and bath products, asked me to be their ambassador for timeless, elegant, durable cast iron, I said I'm in. Soon after I was in their Kohler Wisconsin foundry watching molten iron, poured enamel applied by hand and the beautiful finished pieces ready to ship. The best bits of the week with Morgan behind the scenes with a member of the show.
Morgan
Happy weekend, friends. Best bits is changing just a little, so bear with me as we figure out new changes. But it's all now into one perfect place, so you can just listen. You hit play and it rolls through. So hopefully it makes your life a little easier.
Mike D
Perfect.
Morgan
That's what we're going for. And as you just heard, Mike D is joining me this weekend. Mike D, what's up?
Mike D
Hey. I'm the guinea pig.
Morgan
You are the guinea pig. This is gonna be fun. We're gonna do some conversation, talk about life, and then we'll get into some listener questions and then we'll do a top three from the Bobby Bones show this week. So all your favorites are still in here. It's just combined into one now. So. Mike D, huge. Last time you were on, you were talking about a move. Now you've moved.
Bobby Bones
Yeah.
Morgan
What's going on?
Mike D
It was chaotic. Probably like nothing too bad happened, but it is just one of those situations where, like, everything was a hurdle, everything was an obstacle.
Morgan
Beyond the WI fi, Beyond the WI fi.
Mike D
Just the entire moving just sucks. And I think that's. It's probably a standard experience of somebody moving. I just haven't moved in, like, eight years and I kind of forgot how much it sucked. So it just feels like everything you do, there's a problem.
Morgan
Yeah. And honestly, once you get comfortable in a place, it's really hard to move. You just, you, you're like, you know, honestly, I'm pretty comfortable. It's not worth it.
Mike D
I think I started questioning it, thinking, like, are we making the right decision? Like, I love this place. I just love this area. And then I think I started to have that little, like, are we even doing the right thing? And then after everything went wrong, I was like, nothing about this has felt right. I made the wrong. We made the wrong decision. Should have just stayed.
Morgan
What about now? Do you feel like it's the right decision now after all the.
Mike D
Yeah. Because now we're going on almost a month there, so it's starting to feel like we made the right call. And then even having to go back to the old place to, like, finish up a couple of things, I was like, oh, this doesn't even feel like home anymore.
Morgan
Really?
Mike D
Yeah.
Morgan
So so much chaos. Not sureing if it was right now you're like, yes.
Mike D
Yeah, I guess it takes like a month to settle into a new place.
Morgan
That's fair. What do you like more about the new place?
Mike D
Now there's more space. Like having a separation. Like, my wife works from home, so she has her own office now. And then my studio is like, completely separate. Like, so now, like, she doesn't hear me recording all the time or whatever, do stuff in there. So I think just having. I think more so for her, like having her own defined space where she can close the door and separate from work. Because when you work from home, it's like, oh, I go over to this place and now I'm working and then I go sit on the couch and now I'm supposed to be relaxing. So she has that separation now that I think is going to benefit her in the long run.
Morgan
Oh, yeah. Closing the door, it's like separation of church and state. Obviously you have to. You have to have a divider.
Mike D
So I think that's been great for her. And then for me, I don't need much space. But I think now having like, what I call. It's kind of like a little cave because there's no windows. It's like upstairs there's no windows.
Morgan
Which. Perfect for podcast studio.
Co Wetzel
Yeah.
Mike D
You know, you know, the mess, like, lighting is so much easier to do. You basically have a blank canvas. So I think just having that space for me is. It feels like once I have everything how I like it, I'll be able just to feel a little bit more creative there.
Morgan
Okay. I love this because I had just sent a video to my fiance and it was like, why do you have five bedrooms if you don't have any kids? And then in the video, it had like a woman's room, the man's room. Like, they had their own things. Like, one was a gaming. They had like a workout studio and then their bedroom. And I do feel like when you're a dink, which you and your wife are at this current moment in time, and dink's official officially is dual income, no kids.
Mike D
Dual double.
Morgan
Yeah, yeah, dual double. And that was a tongue twister. Dual double. And I think when you have that, there's always that question of owning things. But just like you're talking about having that space and having your own space beyond an office. Beyond whatever. Just having an area that's your own to put your own things. She gets to have her own setup of an office. You get to have your own PODC studio that looks like your studio. I feel like is. Is a huge deal and nobody ever talks about that. Like, that's that's one of the coolest things you can get as an adult. You know what I mean?
Eddie
Yeah.
Mike D
Your own space. I realized, like, how nerdy all my possessions are, because as I was like, I just had a bunch of boxes in there when we first moved in. Didn't move anything out. And I was like, there has to be a lot of important stuff in here. And it was all, like, collectibles and, like, comic books. I'm like, am I 34, about to be 35, or am I.
Morgan
Did you end up moving the box over? Because that was a huge discussion. Last time we found out what was
Mike D
in the box, I. Yeah, I reduced it down to. It was like, a big cardboard box, and now it's like a smaller cardboard box.
Morgan
Like a shoebox cardboard box. Or a bigger.
Mike D
Like, maybe a little bit bigger than a shoebox.
Morgan
Okay, that's progress.
Mike D
Yeah. But everything else, I'm, like, trying to see what I'm even gonna do with some of this stuff. Because when you get used to one space and you fill it out, and then I kind of want to start from the beginning, and then I'm like, I just have all these things. I don't know where to put them.
Morgan
It is a weird. Like, do you start, like you were saying, as a blank canvas and you just start completely over, or do you take the things that you loved and you curated in your other home to now in your new space? It is kind of like you have to choose the other.
Mike D
I think when it came to, like, the artwork that I put up on the wall first, I was like, that. That's, like, my staple. That'd be like, if I got tattoos like, those stay, and then it makes it. But then it's all the other things in between it that I'm like, I kind of just want new things.
Morgan
What were the things that were in between? Were they like. I know you had characters.
Mike D
Yeah. Like, I had a bunch of, like, figures that I would put behind me. I had, like, this whole other section where I put, like, all my comics and then just kind of filled it with stuff. But all that stuff is just in a box now. And, like, that hasn't really gone anywhere yet. And I have, like, an empty bookshelf that I just haven't committed to what I put there.
Morgan
So you got a lot. That's also another fun thing about moving. It's not fun when it's happening.
Mike D
No, not at all.
Morgan
You have adult things to do. You have a job, you have a life that you have to be present for but at the same time, it's also really exciting that you get to get new things and you have adult money to get the things that you want to create a space that you really like.
Co Wetzel
Yeah.
Mike D
Cause I never really had. I mean, before this move, I think every piece of furniture I got, I got for free.
Morgan
Really.
Mike D
Either somebody gave it to me, I found it in a dumpster, or I've had it since college and maybe bought it for very, very cheap or like a thrift store. But I. I've never, like, bought specific things for a new place until now.
Morgan
And you guys did buy some new things for the new place or you're still in the process of doing.
Mike D
Yeah, we haven't got to the buying new things yet as far as, like, little things, but nothing like a. Like a major piece of furniture.
Morgan
Yeah. And it's hard to buy things. I remember I brought my couch from my apartment to my house, and I put it in.
Veronica Roth
It's still there.
Morgan
But when I first put it in, I was like, this looks tiny compared to where it was before. But then I didn't want to go through the whole step of having to re. My. My whole living room was functional around that couch. And then I realized I don't have the effort to put in to recreate this entire room right now. And so it's still the same, and now I've just added onto it. But it is a fun. It's fun while also being stressful because furniture, especially now, they're big pieces that you have to spend a lot of money on. They're not just like, you know, used to be, like, drop a couple hundred dollars.
Mike D
No, it's insane. We've already looked, and it's like, that's crazy.
Morgan
Insane amounts of money. So they're a big purchase that you have to think about. It's not a. You know, back in the day, you get a full set. It all goes together now. It's like one. One little dresser you get for $1,000. So it is all of its big purchases is what it feel. Is that what you guys are working through as you move in?
Mike D
And. Yeah, I think we just tried to get through all, like, the moving expenses first. And then we're like, we don't want to spend any more money right now. Let's wait till later to figure it out. Because we have, like. It's not like rooms are empty. We feel comfortable with everything. But I think that next step is just upgrading something. But then you have to get rid of the old thing. And like, where are you going to dump it?
Morgan
Oh, my gosh. And listen, I've had so many fun adventures on Facebook Marketplace. You've heard about that?
Mike D
I've been looking on Facebook Marketplace. I feel like it's cheaper.
Morgan
It is. And some people put brand new stuff on there. You find some gold items on there. But I will tell you, selling things on Marketplace, it is an adventure in itself.
Mike D
I mean, I imagine it's probably hard just to get the person to even show up sometimes.
Morgan
Yeah, sometimes it's so funny that these people think you've known them your entire life and they'll be like, there was one lady who was messaging me and she was like, I have my daughter's game at this time, so I can't come anymore. I'm like, I didn't need to know. I just needed to know that you couldn't show up at that time. And then she proceeded to keep messaging me, was like, well, if my husband does this at this time, I'll be able to come there. I was like, I still don't need to know that. I just really need to know what time works for you.
Mike D
I am not your mom.
Morgan
It was that. It was these full personal exchanges. And then sometimes you show up and you get ghosted. Nobody even shows up.
Mike D
Yeah, I've heard of that.
Morgan
So it's an adventure. It's fun. You have stories from it, but it's an adventure. More so, like, honestly, if you could do it, is selling it to friends and family or just selling it from your Instagram page maybe more trustworthy? But it is. It's fun. What's your favorite place about? Favorite thing about the new place?
Mike D
Well, that's a good question.
Morgan
Maybe you haven't had time to find it.
Mike D
I would say my favorite thing so far is probably our driveway.
Morgan
Okay.
Mike D
Because our old place was, like, on a little hill and it caused us a lot of problems. Both of us fell in that driveway
Morgan
during ice storms and stuff.
Mike D
Anytime it rained, you had to be very careful because it, like, wasn't real. Like concrete or gravel. I don't know what the material was. But when it rained, it got so slick. And we also couldn't really park our cars comfortably. Like, next, it was like a. Like, we had to park behind each other so somebody else had to leave the other person. So we had to, like, coordinate. Like, who parks where the carousel of
Morgan
cars is never fun?
Mike D
I think mainly the fact that it's no longer an injury hazard is probably my favorite thing so far because it's one of those things that you don't want to think about, like, am I going to fall down the hill and hurt myself?
Morgan
Isn't that funny? The things that you, like, take for granted, you don't realize are so important when you're staying somewhere.
Mike D
I think it's always been like those little things that have been my favorite parts of places.
Morgan
Is the part where you fall down a lot?
Mike D
No, I mean, just like the little, little inconveniences that you don't realize affect your every day. And I think it's because how I grew up that I didn't. I always just learned to deal with those things. Because I grew up in a trailer park. I didn't have a bedroom probably until I was 15 years old when we moved out and first trailer out, like, outlets just didn't work and you just kind of learned to deal with it. And then as I, like, moved into a house and then moved out, moved into apartments, you learned like, oh, you can live in a place where things actually work. So I think it's coming from a background of adjusting to things not working or finding ways to kind of rig something to make it work. And then you realize that at some point, like, oh, you can actually have a house that actually works. So aside from the driveway, I think my favorite thing would be, like, growing up, I always thought my sign of making it in life was being in a house where you have stairs. I just always thought that was so cool. Like, people have an upstairs and that always just felt like you made it in life moment. That in a pantry, like a legit pantry. We never had a pantry.
Morgan
Okay. You had cabinets, something.
Mike D
We had like a storage thing that our microwave was on.
Morgan
Okay.
Mike D
And that was kind of the heart of the kitchen where we put everything but never had a pantry. And I'd go to kids houses who had pantries. I'm like, wow, you must be loaded. You have a food closet.
Morgan
So does this house, it has a driveway, a working driveway. Does it have stairs?
Mike D
It has stairs.
Morgan
Does it have a pantry?
Mike D
And it has a pantry.
Morgan
Wow. Like, so are you feeling that feeling that you thought you'd feel?
Mike D
Yeah, it's like, wow, we have one of those things.
Morgan
That's a cool moment. That's a cool. Especially to experience with your wife too. Is she, like, realizing what's happening with you as this is all like, this was such a big moment for you?
Mike D
Yeah, I think she kind of forgets, like, how I grew up and how like, kind of wild it is. And I think I told her the stare things too, and she's like, oh, that's kind of crazy. Like I kind of forget that part of your life because of how far like my entire family has come from that, that I kind of had like this. Wow. This is. Aside from like the stresses of getting there and doing all those things, that was kind of the one thing I got to like, enjoy.
Morgan
Yeah, that's cool. I mean, it's hard for it to not be overshadowed by all the bad things you were experiencing. But to now be in a position where this is what you thought making it was and you're here. That's a cool place to be. Do you feel like. I don't know. I'm just. I'm excited for you. That's a cool place to be at in your life. To have something come to fruition. After a lot of hard work, a lot of time, and you finding your wife and getting married and this being the next phase of your life. Does it feel like you're entering into a new season?
Mike D
Yeah, it kind of feels like we're both able to stretch out a little bit more and become more human a little bit. Because you kind of like get into it. It's kind of like taking a fish that was like in a small tank and then putting them in a bigger tank and they kind of like expanding like, oh, I have all this space now. I can live out a little bit more to my true potential. It just kind of feels like that next part of life of like kind of maturing a little bit more, feeling a little bit more settled, feeling less like nervous about bringing people over of like actually having a place like, okay, this is, this is where we live. Not like, oh, this is where we live.
Morgan
Oh, I know. I had been to your guys house before and I loved your guys old place.
Mike D
Yeah. But I think it wasn't like a place where like an entertaining space, like you wouldn't show that house and be like, here's. This would be great for entertaining. I feel like now we're kind of more in that phase, even though we don't really have people over.
Morgan
I know your wife is super social, but are you. Would you like to entertain people? Would you like to host parties and things?
Mike D
Not really parties, but I would like to have like friends who live out of town come stay with us more. And like my family who hasn't been to visit, like as a full family, like, that's kind of what I'm. I've been pushing towards them of like, hey, we have space for you guys now, like come visit. So I think that's where I'm adding. I'm more leaning towards like, when I've never been like, I have people over to party unless it was like just drinking, like out of a keg or something.
Morgan
Yeah.
Mike D
So I don't think I'm that of itching to host like a dinner party, but I think having like family over, like everybody is kind of what I want.
Morgan
That's fair. And that's, that's also a cool part too of being an adult is when you have fun places to go visit and it's a free place to stay. That's a cool part. Like you want to go visit your friends because it's a cool free place to stay. So that's so exciting. And is this also the season that potentially you guys get a dog or a cat?
Mike D
You know, I don't think so.
Morgan
You don't?
Mike D
I think my wife has kind of changed her, her stance on the dog for now.
Morgan
Really?
Mike D
Yeah.
Morgan
What changed? If you don't want to talk about it, you don't have to.
Mike D
But I just think we thought about the responsibility of it and she's kind of like, you know what, we can't really take a last minute trip if we have a dog and we're trying to live to our full potential right now. So I think she has put a pause on those paws.
Morgan
Does that, I saw the pun there. Does the pause also include then kids too? Because that would be another progression.
Mike D
Yeah, it's like all a part of it. It's kind of like. Yeah. Steps, phases.
Morgan
Let me ask you, do you guys feel. Because I know when we like, I love my sister and my niece are there and I love squeezing on my niece and she's so cute. And I know you've probably seen like Bobby's baby and you get she's so cute. But then when you leave, like for me and my fiance were like, that's a lot of work. And I don't think that's for us.
Mike D
Oh, yeah.
Morgan
I get like a shock of how real it is when you get to hand them off.
Mike D
Yeah. When you see that from a distance, you see how much work it is and how tired it makes people.
Morgan
Yeah.
Mike D
And it's kind of like outweighing the hard with the good parts of it because I see like how exhausting and constant it is. But then I also see like another side of my group of friends who are like celebrating with their kids graduating or like going to Disney with their kids or going to the movies with their kids, like the fun moments. And it's like, oh yeah, well, you can't have one without the other.
Morgan
Yeah. No, you definitely have to have all of it. I often am like, if I could just give like the brand new, new. I love a newborn baby babe. I could just like skip that phase. I think if you could just give me a little thing that already talks, I'd be pretty solid.
Mike D
Take a three year old.
Morgan
Yeah. Right at that age. But also similar to how I feel about puppies and kittens now. I used to love puppies and kittens. You have one and you know how much work it is. And I'm like, no, I'll, I'll take the year and a half old. I'm good. I don't need the puppy face. It's. There's just so much work.
Mike D
Yeah.
Morgan
And I, I don't know if young Morgan ever realized that. So I was curious if you guys, a fellow dink couple were feeling that. Because it is when you start to transition in life and you go new phase, you're starting to think about all the others, the other things that can transition and what can come with the season. And more space obviously would naturally a lot of people would be like, okay, so it's time you're having kids. But I don't know, I. Something that we feel lately is just we're more drawn to not is where we're at. But I didn't know how you guys were feeling.
Mike D
Yeah, I think now we're just kind of taking care of all the animals who are living around us. Like there's a cat that lives in the house next to us who just kind of chills outside and comes over. We've already named her.
Morgan
Oh, fun. Okay. I love that.
Mike D
And then there's like some like rabbits that come around. So that's our entertainment. We just see the animals around here. If we can give them some food, we will.
Morgan
Listen, let me tell you, let me, let me give you a cautionary tale. I, you know how you heard about my, my cat's friend who's been hanging out. And I got really excited because she brought another friend. And I was like, I'm just going to start feeding and having a little feral cat colony. I'll take care of them. Well, I put out food and water. Cause I thought I was feeding the cat because she was hanging out there or he, I don't know. And I go outside one day, it's all gone. I got so excited. Okay, she's eating. This is exciting. We're making steps and I go to put out more Food. But then I just see a trail, and there is bird crap all over. It was birds. Birds were eating my food, which I still like birds, too, but I wasn't putting it out for the birds. This is not bird food. It was cat food. I didn't even know birds ate cat food. So cautionary tale if you decide to feed all of the animals around with any type of food.
Mike D
Yeah, that was my thing. Back in the trailer park. I would feed all the stray cats, and we were known for being the house where all the cats went to. Like, I would name them all. And then we even got in trouble from, like, the. Whatever management company it was at the trailer park and was like, you guys got to get rid of these cats. I'm like, they're not really our cats.
Co Wetzel
They're.
Mike D
They're already here.
Morgan
You were just beating them. You're being nice.
Mike D
And I named them.
Morgan
And so did they make you guys get rid of them or what happened? Is it a bad story? Don't tell me.
Mike D
I think they, like, called the pound and got some of them removed.
Morgan
Okay.
Mike D
And then we kept one that I kept in the house.
Morgan
So you did. That was the one that you had that you talked about.
Mike D
My favorite cat.
Morgan
I'm just gonna believe that all of them went to get adopted and live really happy lives. But that's funny. Yeah. So you probably know a little bit about. But cats don't leave a trail behind. Like, feral cats are pretty. You don't really know they were there birds, man. You do.
Mike D
I mean, yeah, Cats are resourceful. Like, they're independent. They know where to find food. They know, like, where what it's safe, where to stay. Like, yeah, they're resourceful.
Morgan
Oh, Hazel. Ever since we've let her out on the back deck, she now knows what the outside is. Let me tell you. Bad mistake. Because now she's a dog, and she scratches at the door trying to go outside all the time. Or if we open the garage door, she shoots out because she knows it's outside. She has learned what doors lead to outside and what doors don't. I have never seen a cat just drastically change from a cat to a dog. And it was her. And all because we introduced her to the back deck where she can lay out at. And now she is obsessed with the outside. So they are. They're. They're cool animals. So I'm still secretly hoping that maybe you guys end up with an animal at one point or another.
Mike D
Yeah. I'm pushing for a cat. I think I convinced my wife. Let's go cat.
Morgan
You could still do quick trips and stuff with having a cat. I mean, the cat, it's definitely easier.
Mike D
The cat will run the house when we're gone. Yeah.
Morgan
And there's so many. There's robot litters, there's robot feeders, there's robot waters. You can do everything on robot and they're fine for two to three days and then you're good. Sometimes they're even good for, I don't know. We left our cat growing up. We would go on vacations as a family and we'd put food out and all the different, like it was like a hunt for her to try and find the food in different places. I think there were seven different food bowls out in different water bowls. And we come home and like half of them would be eaten, half not, and she'd be totally fine. So you can do it. Cats are definitely a lot easier. That might be your guys middle ground.
Mike D
Yeah. I'm going cat.
Morgan
Going cat. Cat, Dog, cat, dog, dog, cat. All right, we're gonna take a quick break and we'll be back to answer some listener questions.

Cal Penn
hey everyone, it's Cal Penn, host of Earsay, the Audible and iheart audiobook club. This week on the pod, sitting down with Divergent author Veronica Roth to talk about her sprawling new novel, Seek the Traitor's Son. It's a sci fi fantasy epic about two protagonists on opposite sides of a war and a prophecy neither of them wanted.
Veronica Roth
My first book was Divergent and when that came out, like, because it was so popular, I think it attracted mostly positivity, but the negativity I sucked in like a sponge. And I think it was like critiques of things I liked when I was like, you know, I was 23 and I wrote this book and it had all my like dorky little cheesy or maybe unrealistic loves in it. And I started to feel a lot of shame about those things. And so for the rest of my career I steered away from those little things that like, make you feel pleasure when you read. But I also was like saying no to these parts of myself that I then was like, screw it. Yeah, so that's this book.

Best bits of the week with Morgan.
Announcer
It's listener Q and A time where
Mike D
Morgan and a show member answer almost all your questions.
Morgan
Still have to start with some shout outs. We've got Dana, who loves you, Mike D. She also loves Mike D. And Morgan. Weekends, shout out.
Mike D
There we go. Thank you.
Morgan
Drew loves you with a mic. With a mic. Mostly when you're laughing at the guys. She thinks that's awesome. And then Sonya, she admires you.
Mike D
So thank you.
Morgan
You got a secret admirer and loved all weekend.
Mike D
Appreciate it. That's me taking the compliment.
Morgan
How is marriage life going? Melissa wants to know, is it what you expected?
Mike D
We just celebrated our five year anniversary which went by really fast. Like, five years is crazy. Is it what I expected? No, I think it's more fun and I think it was a lot of people, maybe through movies and TV shows. It's like once you get married, your life is over. Like, it's been like, that's when my life started. So I think it's been way more fun and less of what all the negative things that people said about that what it would be.
Morgan
I love that. I do think it's interesting that there's a lot of negativity around marriage. I just wonder if it's people who got married for like the wrong reasons or.
Mike D
Yeah, because like even like recently, like, I ran into somebody who was like, hey, we should hang out soon and get away from our wives. And I was like, I don't want to get away from like, I like hanging out with her. It would be more less fun for me to leave her to go hang out with you than to get away from her. And I don't even think they fully meant it. I think it was just kind of like something that, like, I don't know, like a guy thinks he should say to be funny or something. But I had that just kind of reaction of like never in a million years would I think, like, I want to get out of the house to get away from her. Yeah.
Morgan
That is a very common thing. I hear honestly from a lot of guys. Like, I'll even hear it definitely from older guys who will be like, you know, got rid of the ball and chain for the weekend. And I'm like, it's not a ball and chain. You're married.
Mike D
I think if you feel that way, you married the wrong. Wrong person. Like, if. If you really found, like, the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. Like, I find, like, you mean that, like, you actually want to spend time with them. You enjoy hanging out with them. Do you get on each other's nerves every now and then? Yeah. That's just 2p. Any two people living within a confined space, you're gonna get annoyed with each other, but that's just. That's just human nature. You get put into a box with somebody for so long. Yeah, you're gonna argue and stuff. But do you still like each other? Yes. Do you still love each other? Yes. Do you want to run out of the house? Do you want to be like your cat who sees the doors open and knows that's outside? Like, I want to get out of here immediately. No, I don't think that's. That's what you signed up for if you signed up with the right person.
Morgan
So what is your favorite part about marriage? If you had to narrow it down,
Mike D
Always having a friend to do something with. Like, you always know that if you want to go do something, you are not going to do it alone, and that's a good feeling. It makes life fun. Like planning vacation together, knowing that you're gonna go do things together and you're gonna be able to enjoy that with somebody and share that with somebody. I think that's the best part. And then every now and then. Yeah, you do have those things you want to do on your own. Like, I like going to horror movies by myself because my wife doesn't like scary movies. She likes watching some reality TV shows that I'm not fully into. So it's having those separate things, but then coming together for the fun stuff.
Morgan
It's so funny. We. My fiance and I, do talk about it a lot. You mentioned it of just having fun, somebody to always do stuff with. I just love doing stuff with him. Like, you. You have the option to do it alone or do it with other people. And I still would choose him, like, every time to hang out with and go do stuff, I'm like, no. Yeah, running errands. I. We want to go together because it's more fun when we're doing stuff together instead of having to go like, oh, dang, I have to go to the store again. It's like, no, we're going to the store together. And the other day, I tried to be like, hey, I'm just gonna. I'll go run and get us something to eat. He's like, you. We're going together. Like, everything's. We're doing this together.
Mike D
One time I ran into Lunchbox, actually, and we were grocery shopping, and he was so shocked at the fact that we did it together. He's like, why do you guys both go to the store? Like, we like going to the store together. Like, it's. I don't know. We never thought we should do this separate.
Morgan
Right. I. We never have either. We've just done it together. And maybe that's a consequence of not having kids, I think.
Mike D
Yeah, I guess I could see that. If you're also wrangling kids, it makes sense for one person to go to the store together. So maybe that's an effect of that.
Morgan
Yeah. On that side. But if you don't have kids. Yeah, we're doing everything together. I don't want to go by myself.
Mike D
We got to discover new foods together.
Morgan
Exactly. Like, when we go to the grocery store, we find at least one or two new things that we're like, oh, let's try that this week. And it's a fun. It becomes a whole adventure. And then you're cooking and stuff together. I don't know. I just. Everything is more fun when I'm doing it with him instead of. Of just like, okay, I'll see you in three hours. If I go shopping, I even make him come with me shopping because I have more fun. When he's like, yeah, that looks good. I don't know. That's probably not for me.
Mike D
Does he like shopping with you? Yeah.
Morgan
I mean, I give him the option. I'm like, hey, you don't have to come. And if he has stuff going on or if he's doing something with his friends, obviously he's not canceling that to come shopping with me, but if he's not doing anything, yeah, he comes with me.
Mike D
That's one of our top things to do, is do a mall at.
Morgan
Right.
Mike D
We always go shopping together.
Morgan
Is it fun for you?
Mike D
Yeah. Like, I never found that as a thing of, like. Like, the husband couch where the husbands go sit. Like, I'm just, like, I'm with her. I go to the dressing room with her and, like, see what she tries on. And she does the same for me every now and then. I'll do the husband's seat at, like, Sephora just because, like, I don't know what's going on in there. Yeah, fair. Like, I don't really have much input on, like, shades of things, so I'm like, there. I'll go get my coffee, and I'll. I'll chill here and scroll TikTok for a while and then go to a store where I understand what's going on.
Morgan
Right. But you're right. Doing the fashion show with them, that's the fun part. Walking out and, like. And you're like, it either hypes you up or it gives you the. The confirmation you need not to get something.
Mike D
It's harder for her because I don't like anything I try on. And she doesn't understand that concept. Like, I have to absolutely love something to buy something. And she's like, you never get anything for yourself. I'm like, cause if I don't. If I put it on, I know immediately if I'm gonna wear this thing again. So I think her dressing room experience with me is much tougher.
Morgan
That is hard, though. But it's also true. My mom taught me that growing up. She's like, if you do not love this 100%, you want to wear it all the time. Do not buy it. But that's really hard. You know how hard it is to find things that you really love 100%? Most. Most things I love 95% that 5%. I'm probably not wearing it.
Mike D
And I'll know instantly if it's something that, like, immediately fits perfect, looks great, love the fit. Instant buy it. And if I don't get that feeling, nah, I'm putting it back. Even if I'm, like, on the borderline, like, she'll try to press me on stuff that's borderline. I'm like, no, it's not a. It's not a hundred percenter.
Morgan
When you guys first started dating, did you push that borderline a little bit and you're like, okay, I might want to impress her a little bit. I'll try it.
Mike D
Yeah. And then it ended up in my closet for a very long time. It usually comes down to, like, a color that I'm, like, on the fence about. Like, she really pushed light blues on me for a while.
Morgan
You? Yeah, Your skin tone, your hair.
Veronica Roth
Perfect.
Mike D
I don't like light blue, and I can never. I tried it, and I'm like, that's a color I can't do. And now I just immediately shoot it down. Like, that's a color I'm never gonna wear.
Morgan
Even if. Would you get something and then wear it for date nights with her? Has that ever happened?
Mike D
Yeah, that is the result of, like, that light blue shirt. I had a couple other colors that I'm now, like, those aren't my colors, so. Yeah. But now I'm past that.
Morgan
Yeah.
Mike D
Yeah.
Morgan
He. I was gonna say my fiance's still in that phase.
Mike D
He'll.
Morgan
He'll get shirts where he's like. And he'll wear them on. On date nights and stuff, but I. He will sneakily wear them. Other times. It's like he doesn't want to admit that I found something that he really liked. He's working on, like, trying. He gets. He's going through by much what you went through. I think you talked about it at one point where you were trying to figure out your style. You were kind of changing things over. He's kind of there. He's trying to figure out what his vibe is, what his style is outside of work. And so I just keep giving him things, and he's like, these feel too cool guy. I'm not cool guy. We're working on it, so I love that. I love that we both do it. If you could create a superhero, what would it be? Max in Massachusetts?
Mike D
I definitely want a Mexican superhero.
Morgan
Blue Beetle esque. Or different.
Mike D
I would say Blue Beetle esque. I think there's been a big gap in Mexican superheroes. Blue Beetle, obviously my favorite Mexican superhero,
Morgan
but I just think, is he the only one?
Mike D
He was the first one to have a major movie. You also have Namor is a villain who is a Mexican actor. They kind of make a Mexican Mexican. And Black Panther 2. Okay. And then you have, like, Miles Morales, who is, like, half Hispanic. So there are some Latino superheroes, but I think I just want a straight up, like, Mexican superhero. The equivalent of, like, Captain America, but, like, Captain Mexico. Something like that.
Morgan
He just wants to be Mexican versus it being the whole. Yeah, yeah, I get that. I was looking it up because I wanted to see. There was. And I think these are in some. Some comics versus I don't know that they've come. Jessica Cruz is a Green Lantern, and she's one.
Mike D
Yeah. Bane from Batman is technically, I think, Mexican.
Morgan
Oh, okay. And then Zorro is.
Mike D
Yeah, Zorro.
Morgan
I never knew. I. But I also don't know that I equate Zorro as a superhero. Would you? I mean, I just remember I watched the.
Mike D
See, that's the thing with, like, Hispanic Latino super characters is we have to, like, stretch it to be like, Zorro. I will take him in the draft just because he's. He's borderline.
Morgan
Got it. That's fair. We got Ghost Rider. I feel like he's anti hero.
Jacob Goldstein
Yeah.
Mike D
Kind of anti hero.
Morgan
White Tiger is also fits. Maybe that anti hero.
Co Wetzel
Yeah.
Mike D
So we need a big superhero.
Morgan
Yeah, there isn't any. And there's a spider girl that is. But again, there's none that Blue Beetle is for sure, like, the biggest. That's a superhero. Fits the caliber. But yeah, beyond that, there's. There's not that many. You're definitely right in that they're stretching a lot of these that I'm reading, so that would be cool.
Mike D
What.
Morgan
What powers would he have?
Mike D
See, I've worked on one of the comics I've worked on writing myself is like, this guy who, like, is in prison. He busts out of prison. In order to bust out of prison, he has to, like, hide in a dumpster that has, like, a lot of these medical syringes. And then he gets, like, this crazy power and he, like, has this crazy green glow. Kind of like the Incredible Hulk, but he's orange.
Morgan
Okay.
Mike D
Basically, like the rough draft I have of it, but I just want, like, a Mexican superhero who has, like, a crazy rage out Hulk power.
Morgan
That would be cool. And a little bit of a villain story background.
Mike D
A little bit kind of from a harsh background. Kind of like an ant man who went to prison.
Morgan
Mm. I like it. And then he comes back and he is just this major hero. Okay. I mean, immediately when you say Captain America and Captain Mexico, I went to, like, Captain Underpants. My mind wandered, so I like it. Any more plans to visit baseball stadiums this year, Brittany?
Mike D
We are doing a repeat stadium. We're going to a Yankees game for vacation.
Morgan
Are you a big Yankees fan? Is that why it's a repeat?
Mike D
No, I'm a big New York City fan. Overall. Last summer we went to a Yankees game and a Mets game, which I ended up liking Citi Field way more than I did Yankee Stadium. But when we're there and kind of the plans we have, we're gonna go, like, to a Broadway show and do some other things. The Yankees game kind of fits in better with our time there.
Morgan
Is the Met Stadium further outside of the city?
Mike D
Yeah, it's a little further out, but I just felt like the vibes were better. Maybe because it's a little further out. It's like, a little less from the main part of, like, where we usually stay. And it kind of feels like a little bit more laid back and chill. The food was better like that. A whole, like, vegan menu that they're known for.
Morgan
Yeah, and that's awesome.
Mike D
And like, I. I rarely go with the intention when going to a baseball game of Like, I'm eat some great food. You're just like, I'm going to have peanuts and then I'm going to take in my own snack. Like, the fact that we were both able to go. My wife was able to find gluten free stuff, I was able to find vegan stuff, and then we just, like, chowed down before the game. Like, that was awesome.
Morgan
Yeah, that's huge. That makes the experience so much better. For sure. You could. I don't know what your timing looks like, but you could pop over to Boston and go to a Red Sox game.
Mike D
That. That is on our list of going to Fenway.
Morgan
It's not far. I mean, you take a train ride and you're there.
Mike D
That is a good idea. Because then also this summer we're going to go back to Atlanta to go to a Rangers and Braves game. So we're repeating some stadiums because, I mean, we love baseball. Our goal is to go to every single stadium. But as far as, like, what we have planned, we're doing repeats.
Morgan
Okay. Yeah. Well, if you. If you're able to tag on, like, a little bit of Boston, you might be able to get.
Mike D
I've been there, but it doesn't count if we haven't been there together.
Morgan
Yeah, that's fair. And you definitely need to go. Fenway is so iconic. You have to go. Even if it is a repeat for you.
Mike D
Yeah, because, like, she's been to a Rockies game, but I have it, so, like, we gotta go there.
Morgan
So there's some repeats that need to happen for each of you, but, yeah,
Mike D
we gotta mark it off altogether.
Morgan
All right, that's exciting. And lastly, Samantha wants to know about your glow up. Samantha thinks you've had a glow up. I feel like you have, too.
Mike D
Yeah, Like, I think I've just tried to take better care of myself outside of, like, working out. And I think a lot of that has been my wife trying to get me, like, to wash my face and, like, have an actual skincare routine. So I focus.
Morgan
You mean you're not washing your face with shampoo and conditioner?
Mike D
Not anymore.
Morgan
Good job. Good job.
Mike D
I got rid of the three in one, so I feel like I've been more intentional about, like, being, like, how I want my hair cut. And I feel like that's kind of been, like, my something that in the past, I went totally drastic in certain situations of, like, having something I felt like didn't fit me. And I look back on some hair styles of mine, like, it was probably was a little weird.
Morgan
So you're trying to find. Are you in your haircut phase now, where you're trying to figure out the haircut for you or you found it?
Mike D
I think I found it. I was gonna experiment there for a second, and then the person who had been cutting my hair for, like, three years was, like, taking a break, and I saw that as, like, maybe I shouldn't change it now, because if I go new person and then try a new hairstyle, I might be in for a couple of months of disaster, you
Morgan
know, Let me tell you, you guys have it really easy with hair. I have to. It takes me forever to find a good hairstylist and then find one that I trust, and then I have to dye my hair. It's the whole thing. My fiance just goes to the strip mall that's by our house. He doesn't have to have an appointment. He just shows up, and they speak another language, and he gets his haircut, and it looks amazing. And then he comes home, and I'm like, that took 15 minutes. And that. You didn't have an appointment. You didn't know them.
Mike D
That's great. Like, I haven't done that in a while.
Morgan
A wild thing. And. And they look so good every time. I don't know what's happening in there. I mean, I'm a little sketched out when he goes. I'm not gonna lie. There's definitely shootings that have happened in that. That area for some reason. I don't know why, but he loves it. He loves his air that. That they do there.
Mike D
I think he's also kind of an anomaly, and his hair is probably a certain way that, like, he can do that, because I could not do that because one, my hair is, like, really thick and it grows out weird. And then two, I have, like, these really weird cowlicks that everybody has a problem with. And every time, like, I get a new hair person, like, what is going on back here? And some people, like, mess it up. So, like, I feel if I did that, it would not look good.
Morgan
Well, especially if you're. There's a little bit of a language barrier, and you're like, I have these issues. They're definitely fin assist in that. But that makes sense. So do you have an actual barber then?
Mike D
Yes. She ended up coming back after taking a little break, so we're good now. I was like, we've perfected this thing. You can't leave me now.
Morgan
There is no worse breakup than, like, one, that with a person that you've done styles with or services with for several years. And then you have to find somebody new. Horrible. It's a horrible experience. I trust me, I've had many a lot of people choose to do different things. And then like, I had to change an OBGYN after my entire life and I cried because how is somebody else gonna be doing that appointment? That feels weird.
Mike D
It's hard. I have a good person who cuts my hair and a good doctor. I feel like I'm good right now.
Morgan
You're like, nobody moves.
Mike D
I'm like, you guys, don't leave.
Morgan
Please, please leave this exactly as is. All right, we're gonna take another break and we'll be back. We're gonna do the top three segments from the Bobby Bones show this week.

Cal Penn
hey everyone, it's Cal Penn. I'm the host of Irsay The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast, I am sitting down with Ray Porter, the narrator of Andy Weir's audiobook project Hail Mary, massive sci fi adventure about survival and science and what happens when you wake up alone, very far from Earth.
Eddie
I really had to make a decision because I caught myself getting that frog in my throat and starting to get teary as I'm narrating some of these sections and it's like, okay, yo, yo, yo, is this indulgent? And I really thought about it.
Co Wetzel
I was like, no.
Eddie
At this point it would kind of be betraying the trust the author and the listener have in telling this story if I don't go through it. But there's places in this book that that deeply, emotionally affected me and I left it on the mic. That's great because it served the story. People will say like, oh my God, I cried at the end. It's like, yeah, dude, me too.

Mike D
It's the best bits of the week with Morgan. She's breaking down the top segments from the Bobby Bones show this week.
Morgan
Mike, you're joining in with me on this. Okay, this is where we're changing things up a little bit. We're gonna still insert the segment so everybody can hear it. But give me a comment or something that you want to say about one of these segments.
Mike D
Okay, Top three.
Morgan
So in the number third spot, we have. Bobby is doing more Giving Tuesdays, but he's also contemplating getting rid of it. Give me a thought.
Mike D
I like the Giving Tuesday because I like his explanation of saying, like, he's not taking away from anybody else, which is the backlash he's received. He's just highlighting things that don't normally get the highlight. And I think helping people is helping people. And as soon as you kind of like. Like try to judge somebody for how they help people, like, I don't think that's fair. So I enjoy it because I think it's people who genuinely have something going on in their life that they need help with. And some things may be trivial to some but important to others. You don't know what's important in somebody's life. So I like it.
Morgan
I agree with you. Joy comes in so many forms. It doesn't just come when somebody is at the very bottom and needs everything. Sometimes joy comes when you're in the middle and life's just really rough, you know, like, there can be all kinds of things. So here is that segment number three.
Bobby Bones
I'm thinking I may have to cancel Giving Tuesday.
Co Wetzel
Why?
Bobby Bones
Because people just get off of my junk about it, not even asking. But I don't care about that. So, quick recap. I would hate going into my DMs or comments. So I made a rule. I'm only going in on Tuesdays because it's so toxic. And then I thought, what can I do to change how I feel about doing it? So I would just find people and. And I'd help them out. And so I started calling it Giving Tuesday. And then I said, hey, if you're gonna do it, make it easy on me. Like, if you write 10 paragraphs, I'm not gonna read it all. Just give me a paragraph and put a Venmo. And I've been helping folks, and that's great, but now people are getting onto me because I'm not giving to things that are important enough. I saw someone getting after me because I'm not giving to an Ebola charity, and those people are dying.
Eddie
Okay, guys. Like, that's so dumb.
Morgan
Yeah.
Eddie
I think the softball is important. The.
Bobby Bones
All this stuff is important to somebody. What I wanted to do is individualize on Giving Tuesday. There are Things that my wife and I donate to. They're big companies. It's our own personal business. I don't have to share all that. I thought Giving Tuesday was just a fun way for me to acknowledge my relationship with social media, how it is so negative. But what I'm going to do, because I do, like, I'm successful now and I have money, so I want to help out. That's what I like doing.
Morgan
So don't let those negative people impact.
Bobby Bones
But it's like a third of the messages now.
Ryan Seacrest
Now it's back to toxic.
Bobby Bones
Now I'm toxic. I go to Giving Tuesday, and all they want to do is, like, yell at me for who I'm giving to.
Eddie
It's not good.
Bobby Bones
Like, I gave money to a guy to get a tattoo.
Eddie
Oh, do you think that's what did it?
Bobby Bones
No, I just think it doesn't matter
Eddie
because, I mean, I think that's. That was funny. But you can do whatever you want.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Morgan
I wouldn't let them yuck your yum.
Bobby Bones
Now I gotta do something to fix my mind for the people that are in Giving Tuesday that are making it toxic for me to do Giving Tuesday. So that's where I am.
Mike D
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
I just need to talk me out of being crazy here.
Morgan
Don't. Don't give in to them. If you do, they win. You know, it's like, you don't want them to have power over you like that.
Bobby Bones
Are they shame.
Morgan
You're stronger than that.
Bobby Bones
Why are they shaming me?
Morgan
Don't be weak.
Bobby Bones
And then people. Sometimes I'll go in if I've already done Giving Tuesday. At the end of the night, it's like, you didn't even pick me. I hate you. I go, oh, I'm not picking you next week now.
Eddie
Okay.
Morgan
Yeah.
Eddie
So you write their name down. You're like, all right.
Bobby Bones
Well, so now it's making me, like, angry at everybody.
Eddie
And that's not what you were trying to do in the first.
Bobby Bones
You know what Hateful Wednesday that's gonna be.
Morgan
Well, so what happens on Hateful Wednesday?
Mike D
I don't know.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I think what I'm doing now, what this segment's about. Okay, I'll do it at least one more week.
Mike D
It's the best bits of the week with Morgan Number two.
Morgan
Every time I want to do this one, this is our number two spot. But every time I want to say his name, I just. I immediately go to Pretzels. It's CO Wetzel. He was on the show this Week he was in studio. So give me some thoughts, Mike.
Mike D
I love CO the first time he came on the Bobby cast, we got a warning about cool and said he's kind of rambunctious, like be careful with co. And he came in and.
Morgan
Well, in all fairness, we did learn in the interview he created two bars because he going to get kicked out of said bars.
Mike D
But when he came in, he was so nice. He told some crazy stories though. My favorite quote from any interview we've ever done is him saying, I woke up in jail and I didn't know why I was there. Like, that is the opening line to a movie. Like, that is the coolest line anybody has ever said. And he is so authentic to that lifestyle of like, that is him. It's not an act. He's not trying to act like an outlaw to sell records. That is him. So from when we first met him, thinking he was gonna come in and like pee on the walls and like bust the break a window and he was just so nice. And does he like to party? Yeah. Does he like to get a little rowdy? Yeah, but. But he was just a genuine dude.
Morgan
That's cool. It is. You're right. That line is just. It could go in so many places. You know what I mean? And he is, he's so nice. But he did. Which you're gonna hear in this interview, he has his own bars for a good reason.
Mike D
So here's the interview number two. Here we go on the Bobby Bones show now. CO Wetzel.
Bobby Bones
CO Good to see you, man.
Co Wetzel
Yeah, yeah, Good to be here.
Bobby Bones
Hey, surprise. You got abs.
Co Wetzel
I got abs.
Bobby Bones
What the crap?
Co Wetzel
I know it. They came overnight. You know, I think that's the consensus on it.
Bobby Bones
There was a picture of CO I think it was a lake.
Co Wetzel
With your daughter maybe. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And I was like, like, you're a big dude, strong dude, obviously. I was like, how is he that big and like barrel chested with. That's my thought. With abs?
Co Wetzel
Yeah. I think, I think it's because nobody saw me whenever I, you know, I played college football and stuff. So before I got hurt, you know, I was pretty ripped up. And then I just kept on putting layers and layers on and then finally it went away and so they're, they're making themselves visible again.
Bobby Bones
Layers. You mean skin, not clothes?
Co Wetzel
Not big layers of, of fat and beer and everything else that's been happening over the last 10 years, man.
Bobby Bones
Good for you, dude.
Mike D
I was proud for you.
Bobby Bones
I was like, dude, it's been hitting hard.
Co Wetzel
Yeah, man, I'VE been locked in, man. We've, you know, getting ready for this tour and everything, and just kind of, you know, getting in the gym and eating healthy and not drinking as much, man. It's been good.
Bobby Bones
What do you do when you work out, man?
Co Wetzel
I'll do a bunch of cardio stuff. A lot of. I do, like, the bro. The bro stack or whatever it is, the arms, chest, abs, and that's kind of like rotate them out like, twice a week.
Bobby Bones
Do you go to a normal person gym when we're on the road?
Co Wetzel
Yeah, but I've got. I've got the gym at the house, so it's easy just to wake up, get in there, knock it out early, and then, you know, I'm waking up by, like, but like, six every morning, try to get the workout done. And then baby girl wakes up about 7, 7:15. So that's when our days start.
Bobby Bones
Now ours wakes up around then, too.
Co Wetzel
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
You know what's crazy to me? How old is your daughter?
Co Wetzel
She just turned one two weeks ago.
Bobby Bones
Okay, so ours is now three months.
Mike D
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
So I'm a little behind you, but it's crazy to me how long they sleep, dude. Once It's. That's like 11 hours sometimes.
Co Wetzel
We've. We've. My girl Bailey, man, she's trained. She's done, like, the routine deal, you know, since she was about seven months. And do we put her in her crib at seven? She's like, all right. Bud has that for 12 hours. But it doesn't wake up once, man. It's. It's a blessing, dude.
Bobby Bones
It's also unbelievable to me because when you have the baby, at first, it's every two and a half hours because you got to feed them. You know, there's just all these things happening. And my wife said at some point, you know, she's gonna sleep for like, 10. No way. I argued with her. There's no way this baby.
Co Wetzel
Yeah, there was. It was rough there for the first. First few months. I was like, man, what have I got myself into? You know? And. No, I get it. Does it get so much better? I've got a bunch of buddies that, you know, have younger, you know, little babies and stuff, and they're like, man, does it get better? I'm like, just trust me, it does, man. So it's been. It's been a lot of fun. And. And like I said, getting the sleep is a lot better, too.
Bobby Bones
Do you feel a softness because you have a little girl? I guess that's a no.
Co Wetzel
No, I don't know. I mean, I still have my. My days, but, you know, it's just kind of. I know it's all over the place, man. I don't. I don't know where I'm at these days, man. Everything's happening and going on, but I
Bobby Bones
feel like, because we had a little girl, like, I feel like I'm way, way softer with her than I would have been if we had a boy.
Co Wetzel
Yeah, for sure. And. And that's what, you know, me and Bailey talk about. She was like, you were. You were born to be a girl, dad. And so I don't. I guess that's a way of saying, yeah, I've gotten a little softer over the. Over the years, especially the last year. But no, she's a. She's an angel, man. And I don't know. I can't imagine having a boy now.
Bobby Bones
I mean, I just feel like it would be different. I think it'd be like I'd push him down.
Mike D
Suck it up, kid.
Co Wetzel
I know you're three months dirt on it.
Bobby Bones
Get adversity. This is what life's all about. Did you guys go to Australia?
Co Wetzel
We did. We just got back probably a month ago. We were over there for two and a half weeks. Did Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.
Bobby Bones
What'd you learn about that trip?
Co Wetzel
Trip, man, a lot, actually. It was. It was really cool to see, you know, people, you know, all the way on the other side of the world coming out and, you know, supporting Texas music, man, and singing our songs back to us. It was wild. You know, we did CMC last year. CMC Rocks. Big festival over there and had a great time. Yeah, getting over there, man, it's just. It's so much fun, dude. I tell everybody it's like a huge Texas. Like, everybody's just so cool and they. They love the country. The country music genre over there is blown up so big. And so. So it was. It was cool just to get in there and, you know, stick our foot in the water and hopefully get to go back over there for some more shows.
Bobby Bones
When you go that far, do you give yourself a couple days before you perform or do you land and hit the ground running?
Co Wetzel
Yeah, so last year, we really didn't. We kind of. We jumped into it and didn't prepare for the jet lag and all that. And we. We drank all the way there, and then we drank once we got there. We didn't really slow down any. And so, yeah, the show last year was pretty rough. So this year we were like, hey, we got to Get a few extra days. And I think we had about three, which we had. You know, we rehearsed once we got over there and drank a lot of water and kind of got the jet lag out of the way before we started.
Bobby Bones
So do people mess up your name a lot if they don't know you?
Co Wetzel
Not too. Not too bad.
Bobby Bones
So co. Koe gets set as CO most of the time. If people don't know, most of the
Co Wetzel
time it's that or Koe or Coal. I still have an aunt to this day that calls me Cole for some reason. And we. We try to. We try to be like, hey, it's. It's co. But she just said it cold for so long. Just cold now. So that's pretty good.
Bobby Bones
I still get Bobby Jones.
Co Wetzel
Bobby Jones.
Bobby Bones
That's not even my. I mean, I guess because my name is so stupid. So I get Bobby Jones.
Co Wetzel
Bobby Jones. Hey, he was a dog. He was.
Bobby Bones
He was great in the 50s when he played golf or whatever. Whatever age that was. Whenever you. Because you have the new record that's out today, like, what was the purpose of a new record for you with this one?
Co Wetzel
We didn't go into it thinking it was going to be an album, man.
Bobby Bones
We.
Co Wetzel
We went into it, it. Writing a couple singles, you know, to try and follow up High Road and, you know, whatever what it had done. And so we went in there, we wrote a few of them, a few turned into six or seven, and those turned into what is now the night Champion, you know. And so that was what. What this album was really cool about because we didn't. I didn't go into it being like, oh, we got to make a record. It just kind of made itself. And I think that goes to. To, you know, Gabe Simon and. And Carrie K and all the badass writers that we had on it, man. It's just these songs came really naturally and organic and they. They just kind of came out of nowhere and before we knew it, we had a record.
Bobby Bones
So how do you write a song? What's your process?
Co Wetzel
I'm a melody guy. I love having a melody. Just having an idea of kind of where I want to go with the song and what I want to talk about. But yeah, I've always been melody first and then lyrics second.
Bobby Bones
Do you go in a room at 9am and write until 3? Traditionally, do you write on the road? Like, what. Who do you write with?
Co Wetzel
I'm writing all the time. So I like. I just pull up my phone, pull out a bunch of voice notes and stuff. Like that and. But yeah, once, you know, once I started co writing with people and coming to Nashville a lot more, that was kind of the whole deal was, you know, get into a room and just see what we can come up with. And I wasn't, I wasn't used to the, you know, the two hour sessions or the one hour. Oh, we got to put out a song like that. Like, I was never a fan of that. So with these writers that we've put together, you know, from Ashley Gourley to Steph Jones and all these badasses, man, we're.
Bobby Bones
We've.
Co Wetzel
We've kind of got it to where we don't try to. To put a limit on. On how long we have to write a song. We just get in there and, you know, if the song makes itself for sure, but if it doesn't, you know, we don't try to force it. And that's what's really been cool about me getting in with these, these, these other writers.
Bobby Bones
You still have a restaurant or bar?
Co Wetzel
Yeah, two down in Texas.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, two now.
Mike D
Yeah.
Co Wetzel
Fort Worth in Houston.
Bobby Bones
Did it start with just one?
Co Wetzel
Started in Fort Worth. I think we just celebrated three years for the one and fourth and then. And Houston's coming up on a year and a half maybe.
Bobby Bones
Why'd you start those?
Co Wetzel
I don't know, man. It was just. I think it was kind of one of those things, you know, I like to have a good time like other people to have a good time. And fourth just seemed like the place to do it. You know, we were always going to bars and usually getting in trouble or getting kicked out of bars. I said, hell, I just want to build one that I can't get kicked out of. And so is there more you go and hang out? Yeah, yeah, yeah, we'll go, we'll go out there and. Yeah, all my friends and everything. Like, we have a back room. It's not really a room, it's just like the back of the bar that we'll kind of block off and we go in there. It'll be a, Any, any like big event in Fort Worth or wherever around there. We'll kind of make it a plan to meet up at the bar around 10 or 11.
Morgan
And it's quite the investment in not get kicked out.
Co Wetzel
We're cool with all the cops around there too. Like, all the cops are really cool with us and stuff. So yeah, I mean, we, we have a good time.
Bobby Bones
Is it bar first, restaurant second?
Co Wetzel
Yeah, pretty. So like during the day it's a restaurant slash like pretty much like a sports bar kinda. And then once, once the lights go down, it's. It's a full on honky tonk club. Whatever you want to. Want to. Whatever you want it to be, it can be.
Bobby Bones
I picture if I went into a Co Wetzel bar, it would be a stage with the fencing in front of so people can't throw beer bottles and
Co Wetzel
hit the chicken wire.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, the chicken wire. Like that's what I would picture a Co Wetzel bar to be like. It's so rowdy that that's what happens.
Co Wetzel
Yeah, it's a good time, man. A lot of people have a lot of fun. I feel like it's. The DJs are great, play a bunch of different styles of music and we got the bottle girls and all the, all the things.
Bobby Bones
Do you dance?
Co Wetzel
No. Hell no.
Bobby Bones
At all.
Co Wetzel
I mean I can dance. I just choose not to. I'm. I like to play music for people to dance to. I can't. I'm not the dancer year.
Bobby Bones
You don't even get into it and dance on stage a little bit?
Co Wetzel
No. Well, that ain't no. I'll let, I'll let Luke Bryan keep keep dancing on stage. That's, that's not my, my forte.
Bobby Bones
Why is it called the Night Champion? There is no song called the Night Champion.
Co Wetzel
No, I didn't. And you know, it's kind of. Well, I mean, Nine Lives I think was the first record that I put out that actually had a song on it that was named after the record. But the Night Champion is kind of. It kind of goes back to kind of the closing of all the records and stuff that I've made over the last 10 years. Just kind of coming out of, you know, the party era of me and, and just kind of where I've been the last 10 years. And you know, I think a lot of people can tell the changes that I've made in my life over the last year or two and just coming out of it, you know, with my fist raising the air and it's kind of like I, I conquered that night.
Bobby Bones
You won night.
Co Wetzel
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Morgan
Yeah.
Co Wetzel
And now I'm waking up at 7, you know, whenever I used to be going to bed at seven. So yeah, just. It's a lot of that. My, my granddad, he raised hunting dogs and the Night Champion is awarded to dogs that, you know, win so many events throughout the night hunt. And he only had one Night Champion dog. And I don't know, it just kind of, kind of mixed everything into what it is. And yeah, the night champion.
Bobby Bones
Do you feel like you just don't go as hard as you used to? Is that age or maturity or what?
Co Wetzel
Yeah, for sure. I think it's. It's age. It's kind of all of it, man. You know, having. Having a baby girl, just me getting older, you know, I don't have the urge to just go shut down bars anymore and. And pick fights with cops and stuff like that. So. Yeah, man, I think it's. It's kind of all of it.
Bobby Bones
You ever get in the middle of a fight and just know you're gonna lose?
Co Wetzel
Yeah, absolutely.
Bobby Bones
And then what? Do you run or do you just go? And you know what? I've entered a fight and I'm for sure I'm gonna lose. I might as well just ride it out. Is that what you do?
Co Wetzel
Yeah. Take the pain.
Bobby Bones
I don't get in fights because I know I'm gonna lose. We have this machine here. This is a grip machine. You ever seen one of these?
Co Wetzel
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Would you mind giving us a run, see what you can do on it? Let me see. Let me make sure it's on. Don't hurt yourself because I hurt my back. That's how weak I am. But give it a 1, 2, 3, go. Okay, let it go.
Co Wetzel
Hands are lotiony.
Bobby Bones
Okay, so this is his first cold pull. He gets to do one more.
Eddie
Okay.
Bobby Bones
130.
Morgan
Oh, my. And it was lotiony.
Bobby Bones
Cold and lotiony.
Eddie
I mean, wow, wow, wow.
Co Wetzel
Not bad.
Morgan
That's actually really good cold and lotion at 130.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I got like 97.
Mike D
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Bobby Bones
You know that fight thing I was talking about? That's why I don't fight.
Mike D
He didn't even like.
Bobby Bones
No, no, he didn't, he didn't.
Morgan
He just was like, oh, squeeze.
Eddie
No, grunt. Nothing, Nothing.
Bobby Bones
Yeah, I'm a grunt now. You know what's up now?
Co Wetzel
I know.
Morgan
Yeah, yeah.
Bobby Bones
Get that jargons off. There you go. Here we go. Jergens, co Wetzel and get it.
Mike D
There we go.
Eddie
Oh, that looked tough.
Co Wetzel
This.
Eddie
It was.
Co Wetzel
I think so.
Mike D
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Are you right handed, left handed?
Co Wetzel
I'm right handed.
Bobby Bones
All right, well, 1130 is in. 130 is high, but I'm surprised it's less really high. Let me see what I got here today.
Co Wetzel
It's early in the morning. By the way, everyone I know.
Morgan
My hand's always a little weaker in the morning. Bobby's face.
Mike D
Oh, I got.
Bobby Bones
With my off hand, right hand. I got 100.
Co Wetzel
It's pretty good.
Morgan
Yay.
Bobby Bones
Solid with my offhand. Let me do my good hand again. Let's see if I can beat coach. Go. What do you think the odds are I can beat co. All right, here we go. All right. What's that say?
Co Wetzel
152.
Bobby Bones
No, it doesn't. That's a lie.
Co Wetzel
It's not. 113.
Bobby Bones
113, though.
Morgan
Pretty good with your offhand.
Eddie
No, that was.
Co Wetzel
That was.
Bobby Bones
That was my left hand.
Co Wetzel
You left handed?
Bobby Bones
I'm left handed, yeah. You're not though, right?
Co Wetzel
No.
Bobby Bones
Do you play baseball at all?
Co Wetzel
Yeah, I played baseball like, like my whole life up until my senior year of high school.
Bobby Bones
Is it because you wanted to play college football so you just dedicated yourself?
Co Wetzel
I was like, I kept my show. I had really bad problems with my shoulders, and so I had offers to go, like to some jucos and smaller schools like that. But I went to Tarleton state on a visit to play football. And I walked in, the guys took me out that night to the bars. We walked into city limits in Stephenville and Randy Rogers was playing up, up on the stage. And I was looking around trying to find an ugly girl, and I couldn't find one. And so I was like. Like the next day they offered me and I was like, yeah, absolutely.
Bobby Bones
This is for me.
Co Wetzel
Yeah, for sure. Yeah. So it's like. It's like the biggest cowboy school in. In. In the world. I guess so. It made. It made sense.
Bobby Bones
And you played football there?
Mike D
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
How many years?
Co Wetzel
Just one. And then I. I snapped my leg and had to have surgery. And whenever I came back, like, we were playing a lot more shows and I was drinking ten times more beer. And so I was like, man, I'm out of here.
Bobby Bones
What positions did you play in high school?
Co Wetzel
I played linebacker. Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Do you have a best game? 14 tackles, couple picks.
Co Wetzel
Yeah, I had. I think my highest that I had was like 23, 24 tackles. Yeah. Dang. I could get after it a little bit.
Bobby Bones
Any pick sixes?
Co Wetzel
No pick sixes. I only had one interception in high school, and it's my freshman year against Carthage. I'll never forget it. And I ran it back all the way. It's like the one yard line. And got smoked. Came off the sideline. My nose just pouring blood. We had these white jerseys on. There's blood everywhere. It was pretty dope.
Bobby Bones
Would you laugh at receivers if they tried to crack you?
Co Wetzel
No, they didn't. They didn't try to do that too often.
Bobby Bones
Only one time.
Co Wetzel
Just one time?
Bobby Bones
Just one time. And they didn't do that anymore.
Co Wetzel
Watch film. I'm like, yeah, I'm not doing that.
Bobby Bones
You miss playing ball?
Co Wetzel
I miss it, man. Every day, just about every. Every night before I go to bed, like, there's always. I don't know if it helps me go to sleep or if it's just good memories, but like. Like just looking through the football helmet, I guess, is kind of. I don't know why that. And standing at home plate and hitting the home run. I don't know why, but like, it's like the last thing I see for some reason.
Morgan
Oh, like when you're closing your eyes.
Bobby Bones
Yeah. I thought he put a helmet on
Mike D
to go to bed.
Morgan
Yeah. And I was like, what an interesting result.
Bobby Bones
I was like, you know what you do?
Co Wetzel
You go, I wake up in my football cleats. I was like, Bailey puts up with a lot of. But that's not what I want.
Morgan
Okay.
Bobby Bones
The album is called the Night Champion.
Mike D
It is out today.
Bobby Bones
The song that we're gonna play is Hurts like youe. So you wrote this with a lot of the guys you mentioned earlier. I don't know, give me a story. Something about this song that's kind of interesting. Before we play it, we put the
Co Wetzel
song together and honestly, I wasn't the biggest fan of it whenever we first wrote it, just because it was more of like on the, I guess, like mainstream side of things. Like, it was more of a more poppy song than I was kind of used to writing or put together. And so. So I didn't think too much of it whenever we first wrote it, you know, I. I enjoyed it, I thought it was a good song, but it. It just didn't really stick out to me. But the more I. I listened to it, the more the song came together, you know, going to. The making, the recording process of it and everything, man, it really started to hit me in the teeth a little more. And man, it just. It really grew on me. It was a tune we wrote, you know, about just kind of like a drug that you can't get away from, you know, Even though you know it's bad for you, you're still going to go after it. It. That was kind of. The more I kept listening to it, the more it made sense to me, the more I kept playing it, the more just kind of became a bug in my ear. And so, yeah, man, it was. It turned out to be a really cool song. I think it's one of the more upbeat, obviously radio style songs on the record. And yeah, man, it turned out pretty good.
Bobby Bones
The Night Champion World Tour. I mean there's a lot of. Do you even come home?
Co Wetzel
No. Once. Once we start hearing about next month, I guess. Yeah, I won't be home.
Bobby Bones
I mean it's rocks rock and roll tour type, like where you don't come. You don't do Friday, Saturday and just come home. Like it doesn't look like he comes home till 2031. He's just gonna stay out.
Co Wetzel
It's almost three months and all his
Bobby Bones
shows are in the day. He's gonna be the day champion.
Ryan Seacrest
That's his next goal.
Co Wetzel
That'll be the next record.
Bobby Bones
Last question. Growing up. Favorite three artists,
Co Wetzel
Randy Rogers. Randy Rogers Band, Nirvana, Garth Brooks.
Bobby Bones
Solid three.
Co Wetzel
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
Co Always appreciate you coming by, man.
Co Wetzel
Thank y' all for having me.
Mike D
I hope you.
Bobby Bones
The record streams like crazy. The song does great. And you guys again, go check out the Night Champion World Tour. It's all on his website. And remember Cole Wetzel.
Co Wetzel
Yeah, Cole.
Mike D
There he is.
Bobby Bones
Co Wet.
Co Wetzel
Thank you.
Mike D
It's the best bits of the week with Morgan. Number two.

Cal Penn
hey everyone, it's Cal Penn, host of Irsay, The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast, I'm sitting down with Divergent author Veronica Roth to talk about her sprawling new novel, Seek the Traitor's Son. It's a sci fi fantasy epic about two protagonists on opposite sides of a war and a prophecy neither of them wanted.
Veronica Roth
My first book was Divergent and when that came out, like, because it was so popular, I think it attracted like mostly positivity, but the negativity I sucked in like a sponge. And I think it was like critiques of things I liked when I was like, you know, I was 23 and I wrote this book and it had all my like dorky little cheesy or maybe unrealistic loves in it. And I started to feel a lot of shame about those things. And so for the rest of my career I steered away from those little things that like make you feel pleasure when you read. But I also was like saying no to these parts of myself that I then was like, screw it. Yeah, so that's this book.

Morgan
And in our number one spot, Eddie shared some crazy family news. His uncle got run over by his own car. Wild thoughts, Mike.
Mike D
That's kind of my. Like, I always thought about an ironic situation I would find myself in if I ever bought my dream car. I would end up running myself over with it.
Morgan
Why is that the thing that you thought about?
Mike D
I think recently I've been seeing a lot of stories about, like, Ferrari coming out with different kinds of cars. And a Ferrari has always kind of been like my odd dream car. Not really to own. The more I learn about how expensive it is to maintain those cars, my dream has gone from wanting to own a Ferrari to just drive. Drive a Ferrari.
Morgan
Okay. I feel like we can make that dream happen.
Mike D
But I've always thought, like, how ironic would it be if you finally bought your dream car and then got run over by your dream car? And that keeps me from ever buying my dream car.
Morgan
I'm gonna tell you right now, Mike, I have so many internal thoughts and a lot of crazy ones. Never once have I thought about running myself over with my own car. I really have never thought of that.
Mike D
I just think that is the kind of thing that would happen to me and it could be anything, any kind of like. That's also why I guess I don't gravitate towards, like, physical possessions. I always think of, like, something is bad. Something bad is going to come from owning this physical possession. It's like, I'm going to get a new house and then it's going to catch on fire. I'm going to die in the house that's dark.
Morgan
You're hard on that one. And mind you, we can joke about this because we do know that it has a good ending. Everything is okay. We wouldn't.
Mike D
I would.
Morgan
That we would not be talking about this if that wasn't.
Veronica Roth
But wild.
Morgan
Just a wild story, too. In general, I mean.
Mike D
Yeah.
Morgan
Because as much as, like, you thought about it, I personally have not. It's not something you actually hear every day. This does not happen all that often.
Mike D
No, I've never heard of this.
Morgan
No.
Mike D
But even though it's thought about it, but I've never really heard, it doesn't
Morgan
actually happen most of the time. But it did to Eddie's uncle. So any other thoughts before we get into that?
Veronica Roth
No.
Mike D
This is Just my own irrational fear.
Morgan
Okay, well, here is that one.
Bobby Bones
Number one, Eddie's uncle got ran over by his own car. He is alive, right?
Mike D
He's alive. Okay.
Bobby Bones
Just want everybody to know that before we start.
Mike D
What happened, man?
Eddie
So this is crazy because I kind of do this, but he was driving and he saw like something on the, on the, in the road, you know, like a tool or something. He's like, that looks good. Let me go by and pick it up. He just thought he can slow down, open the door and lean out and pick it up.
Mike D
Up.
Eddie
But as he was leaning over to pick it up, he slipped and fell out of the car. And the car, the back of the, the back wheels ran over him.
Morgan
Oh, my gosh, that's terrible.
Eddie
Yeah. Dude, he broke his hip. I mean, his hip is shattered. His ribs, almost every single rib is broken. So he's having to have metal plates in his.
Mike D
Oh, my gosh.
Eddie
So that he can like, function. He's going to be okay eventually with this. No, no, no. I have like a lot of uncles.
Mike D
Okay. Deal.
Eddie
Hoopa is just one of them.
Morgan
Okay.
Bobby Bones
And they're sure he's going to live?
Eddie
Yeah, No, I mean, he, he sent a picture. He's. Well, he's smiling. He's just, you know, it's just bad. Like, and, and my wife was telling me, like, how, how do you fall out of your car? Like, I told her, like, I do
Bobby Bones
this all the time. Okay, Are you not going to do it now?
Eddie
Yes, I'm done. I. If I see something all the time. All the time. Ask my kids if, if we're in the car. And I'm like, oh, that's a screwdriver driver. I'll like slow down and pick it up. It's. Maybe it runs in the family, guys.
Mike D
Yeah, Stupidity.
Eddie
My dad did it too. My dad.
Morgan
And then lean out.
Eddie
Yeah, yeah.
Morgan
Because the buckle. The buckle would prohibit you. But then that's also what's going to save your life.
Bobby Bones
Eddie, I want you to make a PSA to all of our listeners right now.
Eddie
Yeah.
Bobby Bones
And tell them why they shouldn't do it and what. What not to do.
Eddie
So I will start off by saying, guys, I know it's tempting. You see something in the middle of the road.
Bobby Bones
Can we get some music? Like, I don't know, so some good edit. Like, I don't. Something like something meaningful, impactful. Because I'm gonna shut up.
Morgan
Like a good tool.
Bobby Bones
And action.
Eddie
If you're driving down the road and you see something in the middle of the road that Looks like it could be of value to you. What do they say? One man's trash is another man's treasure? In this case, don't stop. Don't open your door and try to pick up this item. It will be dangerous. The worst thing that could happen to you do is you can fall out and the car can run over you. Don't do it. Keep moving on. If you've done this before, make this the time that you stop doing it.
Morgan
I don't feel inspired.
Eddie
Well, what do you mean?
Bobby Bones
I think you should stop and get out.
Morgan
You can stop. It's how you said don't stop.
Eddie
Well, don't stop because here's the deal. Like, even I. I've pulled over and then dodged traffic to go get it.
Mike D
Well, that's a different part of this.
Bobby Bones
That's stupid.
Eddie
Don't even do that. I. And like my wife said, an exacto knife isn't worth you getting hit by a car or getting run over by your own.
Bobby Bones
Are there just a lot of tools laying around your yard in the neighborhood?
Co Wetzel
Yeah.
Eddie
Yeah, because there's a lot of construction. They build houses, like further down my neighborhood. So, man, I'm talking screwdrivers, hammers, tool sets, all kinds of things.
Bobby Bones
I'm sorry that happened to your uncle. Yeah, that does suck.
Eddie
Thankfully, he's going to be okay.
Mike D
It's the best bits of the week with Morgan number two.
Morgan
All right, that wraps us for this weekend. Mike D, thanks for joining. Thanks for being the guinea pig.
Mike D
Thank you. I enjoyed it.
Morgan
We had fun talking about all the things and tell the people where they can find you, hear you.
Mike D
You can listen to my podcast, Movie Mike's Movie Podcast, new episodes every Monday where I do a little bit of movie history, a movie review, and then talk about all the cool movies coming out. So check that out. And then I'm ikedistraw and everything.
Morgan
I meant to ask you a hot take. Cause I, you know, I went and saw Mandalorian and Grogu. I had a horrible experience, mate.
Mike D
I did not enjoy it either.
Morgan
Not because of the movie. It was because some family had eight toddlers running around the movie theater.
Mike D
What time was Showtime?
Morgan
It was an evening show.
Mike D
It was 8:00pm oh, that's interesting.
Morgan
And these toddlers learned to walk in this movie theater. I'm not kidding you. They were using the stairs like they have never used them before in their life. They were stomping on, they were running up and down them and their parents were not stopping them. And this is a PG13 movie.
Mike D
Yeah, that's crazy for a later showtime. Sometimes we'll go watch a movie at like 3pm That's a family friendly movie there. And we're like, okay, we could possibly run into that. I've never seen kids just running wild. Usually it's teenagers. If we ever have a problem where like somebody's being annoying, it's usually teenagers.
Morgan
Right. And I would have expected maybe talking or people on their phone. These toddlers were learning to walk for the first time. And so I personally would like to ban children from certain movie theaters. But now that you've said that about timing, I would like to just ban them after 7pm Yeah, I think that
Mike D
should probably be a rule. Kind of like R rated movies. You have to be at least 17 if you're gonna watch a movie after I think 8pm like after 8pm it's probably like a PG13 time.
Morgan
Right? And it was a PG13 movie. I don't know why. I get it. Grogu's really cute. But what are we doing? So that was my hot take recently and now I'm petitioning for. I sound like an old lady. But 8pm and after there's no kids allowed.
Mike D
I do think they should have like different types of viewing experiences. I know some theaters do have like family showings where it is going to be that environment but you buy the ticket knowing it's going to be kids running around. I think they should have showings where it's people who want to go work and watch a movie.
Morgan
Okay.
Mike D
Because you already have the recliners. Some have like where you have like the little food trays that come out. It's like a working movie where you go, you watch a movie. The rule is you can't have any. You can't take a like a conference call during it. But it's where people can go get their work done. But then watch a movie at the same time.
Morgan
That would be interesting. Different showtime. Some are for family, some are for work from. From movies instead of work from home. And some are for like romantic couple. A different. I like it.
Mike D
Then you have like the quote along movies where it's like if it's a musical or like a comedy movie, like you're able to quote along and sing to it. Like different experiences for different showtime.
Morgan
See, I like this idea. I will let you formally file the petition now because I think that's even better.
Mike D
I'll just start my own movie theater.
Morgan
I agree. Let's do that. That's what you'll get on Movie Mike's Movie podcast and now we're out. Mike, thanks for being here. I appreciate you.
Mike D
