Hello and welcome back to Movie Mike's Movie Podcast. I am your host, Movie Mike. Today I have a list of my top 10 movies of the decade so far. What do I think has been the best movies from the 2000s? In the movie review, I'll be talking about Hokum, which is a supernatural horror movie starring Adam Scott that you probably remember from Parks and Rec. He plays a novelist who goes out to a remote hotel to scatter his parents ashes and then uncover some dark mysteries and creepy monsters. And in the trailer park, I'll be breaking down Super Troopers 3. Yes, we are getting another Super Troopers movie. Is it a worthy comedy in 2026 or is it just nostalgia bait? Thank you for being here. Thank you for being subscribed. Shout out to the Monday Morning Movie Crew. And now let's talk movies from the Nashville Podcast Network.

My top 10 movies of the decade so far. This was really hard to do because I keep a of every single movie I watch on my notes, on my computer and on my phone, I went through every review and every score that I have done for this podcast and pick the ones that I feel were the most impactful to me. So this is my personal list. The movies I saw, for the most part, all in theaters, although in the early 2000s, I don't think any of those made the list. So for the most part, these are all movies I saw in theaters because we did start out the decade without movies, which was crazy because I just started this podcast in 2019, which was an amazing year in film. And then boom, all the movies went away. So nothing really came out that was noteworthy probably until 2021. But after that, 2023 was arguably the best year if it wouldn't have been for the writer strike. And then coming off of 2025, there were some fantastic movies last year. I didn't want to include too many from that year, but there were so many that had to make the list and. And 2026 is also off to a fantastic start. We have so much heat coming out this year, so I'm feeling really good about this decade that I will end up enjoying it more than the 2010s, which is really hard because that was such a definitive time in my life personally and also in movies. But let's get into the list now. At the end, I will also Give my top 10 worst movies of the decade so far. That was a lot easier to do. I just went through and found all the zero Point fives and ones and one point fives. And I for sure have the worst movie of the decade, hands down. But we'll get to that at the end. First up, at number 10, one battle after another, which came out in 2025, had a budget of about 130 to $175 million and made $200 million at the box office. Directed by one of the greatest living directors of our lifetime, Paul Thomas Anderson, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Chase, Infinity and so many more people, Benicio Del Toro. And this movie, I picked this one at number 10 because it was such a great in theater experience. And it's also one. Even though at this point, after winning Best Picture, I don't think it's overhyped. I think it is properly hyped because it is that good. It is that definitive. It has. My favorite quote of the decade so far when Benicio gets pulled over and the cop rolls up to his car is like, you've been drinking today? I've had a few. A few what? A few small beers. That is the line of the decade. And in an era right now where movie quotes are so hard to come by, in that moment, I knew that that scene was going to be memorable. Even when he just walks out, he's like, all right, let's go to work. Benicio Del Toro still, I argue, should have won for best supporting actor. He made this movie. On this list at number 10 is one battle after another. At number nine is Barbie. And I'm gonna spoil this list a little bit and tell you that Oppenheimer did not make my list. It will be an honorable mention, but I felt like one of these slots had to go to either Barbie or Oppenheimer because Barbie Oppenheimer Weekend will go down in the movie history books as something that can never be done again. And I know we're talking about Dunes Day with Dune Part 3 and Avengers Doomsday come out in theaters on the exact same day. It just doesn't have that same feeling. Because I think the difference between Barbie Oppenheimer Weekend is that the two movies were polar opposites. You have this dark, gritty biopic about the building of the atomic bomb, and then you have this story about Barbie, which everybody gave so much crap to. Greta Ger, when this movie was coming out, or just the movie in general. I can't believe they're making a Barbie movie. It's just going to be ridiculous. But it had the most important message of the year when it came out in 2023. On a budget of $145 million, it went on to gross over $1.4 billion worldwide. Margot Robbie. I think this is now her definitive movie, and she continues to crush it. Even earlier this year with Wuthering Heights, Ryan Gosling reinventing himself in this role. I am going to try to include a movie quote in all of these because I really want movie quotes to come back. And I don't know if that was just a product of us being young and remembering things like that. More in the 90s and 2000s. There aren't very many from the 2010s I feel are as memorable, but I feel like there's a slight comeback. We've been getting better writing in movies, and I just want a fresh set of movie quotes. But it just seems at times like a hard thing to ask for. But I did love the quote in Barbie where they're having this party and Barbie is going through this existential crisis of she's been living in paradise every single day. She gets dressed up in all these awesome outfits, has the perfect house, lives the perfect life, but every day is the exact same thing and she just wants something different. She wants to go into the real world. And when they're having this party, she's out on the dance floor, she says, do you guys ever think about dying? And the entire room just goes silent. And it's such a great moment because she's been having all these thoughts inside of her head, but that is the first time that she expresses them. And you can tell that in this world, nobody ever talks about real feelings like this. They're all just talk about hanging out at the beach and going to parties and playing volleyball. That I loved that moment. And then paired with whenever she goes into the real world, has to deal with, with how people and women are treated in a man's world. And Ken just being totally ridiculous and over the top. You could also argue that I'm just Ken is a great quote from this movie, but I think of the song a little bit more. But Barbie I am putting at number nine on this list, at number eight. And just by looking at this list so far, if I had to hand out an award to the best studio of the year, that has just been crushing it. Number 10, number 9, and now number 8 have all been Warner Brothers movies. I just feel like they have had the pulse on what people want to pay money to see in theaters, creating the spectacle. And like Ryan Gosling said, still my favorite quote of his, it's that it's not Us as the moviegoers talking about you listening now and me doing this podcast. It is not our responsibility to save movie theaters. It's not on the people paying money that, oh, we gotta go watch movies to save the theaters. It is about the artists and the studios creating things that we want to go see. So it's not up to us to support them and save them. It is up to them to create stories that are noteworthy and create a spectacle for you to go see in theaters. And I think the studio that has been doing that the best with original stories, also with ip because Barbie is still, even though there wasn't a Barbie movie that they were going off of, it's still a really well known brand worldwide. They have been the studio crushing it, taking risks and giving us things that we actually want to go see in theaters. And you see that represented here at 10, 9 and 8, and you'll see it even more on this list later. But at number eight, I have weapons came out in 2025 on a budget of $38 million. It made $270 million at the box office. Zach Kreger has now become one of my favorite directors. And I truly believe that horror is having a moment right now. It is to me the most creative and the most original genre. And it's also one of the places right now in pop culture. I was reading this story that doesn't pretend that everything is fine because if you look at rom coms, if you look at superhero movies, even action movies, all those movies for the most part, give the audience a happy ending. But horror right now, not only is it leading to original stories, it also leads us to the darker things in life that we actually deal with. Anxiety, dread, grief, uncertainty. Real emotions that people are feeling right now. And that is what I took away from Weapons. While it was this mystery that you were trying to uncover how all these kids went missing at 2:17am why it only was contained to one classroom, you try to figure that out. And truly, I had no idea where this movie was going. And I pride myself just because I watch so many movies, for the most part, I can kind of tell where a story is going to go. I had no idea how this movie was going to turn out. And while it was about that you uncovering the mystery, this movie was also about grief because the director's best friend died and he wrote this movie and wrote this story about him dealing with that grief of the loss of his best friend. If you don't know, Zach Kreger was back in the day on a TV show called the Whitest Kids, you know, and his best friend was also an actor on that show, and they acted in it together. They've been friends for years. And he died unexpectedly. And Zach took his death really hard, and he took that grief and turned it into this story. So while it is this horror movie with these crazy visuals, these people running with it looks like they're holding grocery bags on the side of their body, it is also something that you can watch and really learn about grief. And I think that is why people are turning to horror more and more, because it is one of the only genres where they're not pretending that everything is okay. And they are turning these fears that we have in monsters and haunted houses into making us feel seen and making us feel validated. So I think that's why I love horror. And I know sometimes it can be a hard genre to sell, Especially people, millennials like me who grew up in the 90s or even in the 80s. And your understanding and experience with horror movies has been slashers with these classic horror villains like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers that you don't want to watch. Just a bunch of people getting killed. I do believe that horror has evolved so much more from that. Yes, they're still stressful. Yes, they're still scary. But I also think the themes underneath have become more sophisticated, and they have really helped me through some struggles that I've had recently of just mental things, weapons being one of those movies. So at number eight, I have weapons. And I can't wait for that prequel as well. At number seven, everything Everywhere, all at Once directed by the Daniels, who I can't wait to see what they do next. I kind of thought they would have been at least further along in their next movie. I did tell you guys at one point, Ryan Gosling was attached to it and now he's not. So I'm kind of wondering, but we won't focus on that now. I truly thought that everybody was just going to copy this movie after it came out. And I think it's win for Best Picture did hurt it a little bit. Because even though I said earlier about one battle after another that I don't believe that movie is overhyped, it deserves all the hype I do see with this one because it is so unorthodox. A lot of the humor in this movie and the visuals and some of the gags. If it is not your cup of tea, it is not your cup of tea. And if you see it win for best picture and Then you go watch it and see something that you feel is a little bit too ridiculous. I could see how this movie could turn you off and it won so many awards that year. I do see and understand why people believe this movie is overhyped, but I still love it. I saw it in theaters before the buzz really started, before it was knocking at the door on all these award shows. I watched it and had a truly euphoric experience because it felt like something so original and so fresh. I love Keh Kwan and now he is back. It revitalized his movie career. He was basically out of the Hollywood game. And now he is back as an actor, also an author, now putting out a memoir. Jamie Lee Curtis got her first Oscar. And it also has a really fantastic movie quote that if it wouldn't have been for one medal after another, probably would have been my favorite quote of the decade so far. It does come to us from KE Huy Kwan's character and he said to his wife in the movie, in another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you. Great simple line. If that would have been a line back in the 90s, would have been all over. Top 10 movie quotes of all time. So at number seven, I have everything everywhere all at once. At number six is sinners. Came out last year on a budget of $90 million, went on to make over $370 million at the box office. Ryan Coogler directed this movie. He is one of one. He is truly such a visionary that even though Paul Thomas Anderson won for Best Director this year, I truly think it should have been Ryan Coogler because Paul Thomas Anderson obviously has the bigger filmography. But I think in this case he was just due for an Oscar. They wanted to give it to him. The time felt right. The project was also up to the standards, but I truly believe it should have been to Ryan Coogler. And just because he didn't win this year doesn't mean he's not going to win. I think his best films are still ahead of him. He's just been crushing it with movies like Black Panther Creed. And this one felt so uniquely him that I think he is the only person who could have pulled this off with not one, but two, Michael B. Jordan. So I was happy to see Michael B. Jordan win for Best Actor. It was just such a back and forth of who's going to win this one. One battle after another or Sinners. It also has a great quote. You keep dancing with the devil, one day he's gonna follow you home?

Hey everyone, it's Cal Penn. I'm the host of Irsay The Audible and iHeart Audiobook Club. This week on the podcast, I am sitting down with Ray Porter, the narrator of Andy Weir's audiobook project, Hail Mary Massive sci fi adventure about survival and science and what happens when you wake up alone, very far from Earth.
Ray Porter
I really had to make a decision because I caught myself getting that frog in my throat and starting to get teary as I'm narrating some of these sections and it's like, okay, yo yo yo, is this indulgent? And I really thought about it. I was like, no. At this point it would kind of be betraying the trust the author and the listener have in telling this story if I don't go through it. But there's places in this book that that deeply emotionally affected me and I left it on the mic. That's great because it served the story. People will say like oh my God, I cried at the end. It's like yeah dude, me too.

Getting into the top five now. This was the hardest for me because all these movies truly changed me in different ways and I don't think I've made a better top five ever on this podcast than the one I'm about to get into. At number five. All the tears are starting already. It is so hard for me to talk about this movie. The Iron Claw starring Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson. The story about the Von Erich brothers, where it is incredibly tragic, has one of the saddest endings of this decade. That their life was so sad that they actually had to take out some of the sad things because the director thought there is no way audiences are going to believe this because it is the true story about their tragic life. Some would say that this family, the Von Erich family, is cursed. That they removed some of the brothers, removed some of the storyline because somehow their real life was even more tragic than what happens in this movie. But it came out in 2023, had a budget of about 15 million to $16 million, went on to make $45 million worldwide. The quote that gets me, and maybe it's because I saw this movie with my family. We went home for Christmas that year in 2023 and my mom, my sister, my brother, my sister in law, and also Kelsey, we all went to go watch this movie and and we normally go watch animated movies as a family or things like Blue Beetle, but for some reason we all were like let's go watch the Iron Claw. So maybe it was because I was watching it with my family, with my brother. Whenever Zac Efron at the end says, I used to be a brother, and he's sitting on the lawn with his two sons just crying, that scene got me so much. So much so that I haven't rewatched this movie outside of me seeing it in theaters because it is so emotional. And that scene was incredibly sad. Followed by, I don't even want to get into it because it gets me even now. But it took me back to a scene earlier in that movie where times were good, where tragic stories, the best ones, have a moment where they show you where everything is good, where there was a scene in the movie where they were all having fun. They go out to a party, there's music being played. They're all hanging out, they all have friends there, but they are bonding as brothers still all together. I love it when a tragic story has a moment like this, where you see the times where they are at their highest, at their peak, their entire future is ahead of them. They have all these big plans. They all want to go on and be huge wrestlers, and they're working hard towards it. They have all these great days ahead of them. And then you see all these tragic things happen to all the brothers individually. And then it goes to Zac Efron at the very end, just having nothing. Oh, my gosh, this movie hits me so hard. And I think one of the biggest travesties of this decade is that Zac Efron didn't win for Best Actor, but not only that, he was not even nominated. This movie was snubbed so much. And some people forget about snubs after the awards come out, because who cares at that point? Maybe I'm the only one who cares about awards, but I like to see people who do really great work be remembered for it forever. And I think this is a case where people will remember this movie because it is impactful. It's like some songs that you know and have been the soundtrack of your life, and everybody knows certain big monster hits, and then you figure out that they were never number one song. Some didn't even crack the top 10 or top 15. So just because you don't ring that bell of number one or getting all the awards doesn't take away from the fact that you created something truly special. So if you have never seen the Iron Claw and you want to be emotionally wrecked, I think also because I love wrestling so much and I was aware of the Von Erich brothers, I didn't really watch them growing up because they were a little bit ahead of my time. Maybe it's also because of my love for wrestling and all the things. And me loving a dramatic Zac Efron is why I love this movie. At number five, I have the Iron Claw. At number four, the Batman. Starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano and Colin Farrell as the Penguin. On a budget of about 185 to 200 million dollars, this movie made 772 million dollars worldwide, making it one of the highest grossing movies of the decade. Most cited quote in the Batman is I'm vengeance. I love that this movie leaned in more to Batman. Being a great detective and being somebody that not only can beat a bunch of people down and round up the bad guys, but also figure things out and be one step ahead of Gotham's police department, be ahead of Gordon. I also love Paul Dano as the Riddler. That has been one of my favorite villains of the decade so far. I think he's up there with Lex Luthor. Obviously, we haven't seen Robert Downey Jr. As Dr. Doom yet, but I wish that we got a Riddler solo movie. I just think that character was so fantastic. Was such a unique threat to Batman while not challenging him physically in any way, but outsmarting him along the way. Where you do see Batman as a great detective, but the Riddler is somebody that he just cannot figure out. I wanted to see more of the Riddler in this movie. But then you have Colin Farrell as the Penguin in one of the best chase scenes of the 2020s. I would say it's the best because the only one that rivals it is the chase scene from one battle after another. But I remember the moment that scene happened in theaters where you see all these flames on screen. You have the Batmobile's engine just roaring and roaring. And that scene where you see it just emerge from the flames. Penguin's car flip and you see Batman walking upside down. That is such a perfect scene that I remember having this emotion over my face and turning to Kelsey, who was sitting to the left of me in the theater and saying, this is awesome. I truly felt my chemical makeup in my head. You know, they say you get wrinkles in your brain when you learn something new. I felt like this scene gave me wrinkles in my brain because I was experiencing something that was gonna define the way I felt about movies, the way I feel about Batman. The Batman did that for me. At number four, I have the Batman at number three again, I Heavily relied on my in theater experience to define where these movies would rank because that is how I remember movies. And number three, Spider man across the Spider Verse, which came out in 2023, had a budget of about 100 to $150 million, went on to make $690 million worldwide. Fantastic Voice cast, fantastic animation. And obviously a huge bias here because Spider man is my favorite superhero. But there are often only one, sometimes two movies that I go see in theaters where I feel like I don't need to take notes, I don't need to go into them with any kind of how am I going to review this movie? I don't think about that aspect at all because I am so genuinely excited and I just watch them. As a fan, I soak everything in and then put together a review and all my thoughts later. Spider man across the Spider Verse was that movie that year where I devoured every scene and I felt like it was a movie that I couldn't watch fast enough because I wanted to know where the story was going to go and I wanted it to go faster just because when I take in a new Spider man film again, like I was talking about with the Batman, I feel like it changes me as a person because I am adopting what I feel like is a new kid. I am adding somebody new to my family because I rewatch all these movies so often, they've become a part of this collection that I have, whether they're good or whether they're bad. That I wanted to take this movie in as fast as possible just because I was dying to see this. And the fact that we waited so long for the next installment, I don't, I don't trust when they say that movie is coming out now because unfortunately the animation on these movies take forever. It's the same studio that is working now on the next K pop Demon Hunters movie. And it is frustrating, but when you watch how intricate all the animation is, it does make sense. And if they did rush it and put it out within another year and just then you lose quality and it doesn't feel the same, I want it to feel the exact same. At Cinemacon, they did reveal the first looks of this movie and it looks fantastic. But it also has a fantastic quote from Miles Morales. Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Nah, imma do my own thing. Such a great quote as well. So at number three, I have Spider man across the spider verse. Next up on my list, the only movie so far that I have included from 2026 because we've covered movies from 2023, 22, a couple from 25, none from 2020, unfortunately was a really weird year and none from 2021 make the list. But the one movie so far from 2026 making the list and ranking pretty high is Project Hail mary. Cost about $200 million to make, has made $600 million at the box office. Crushing it this year, largely due to it appealing to people wanting to see it on the biggest screen possible, paying that extra money to go see it in imax. And after watching Ryan Gosling in this movie, I've now dubbed him my favorite actor working right now. And I also think I have a bigger attachment to it because I read the book and it had been such a long time since I read a book going into a movie. But I truly believe that helped me enjoy the story more where I took it in in a much different way than I normally do. All these other movies where I have no idea what is going to happen. Instead I was comparing it to my experience reading the book. I loved the book. I love the movie almost equally. I still think they hit all the main points of the book and left me satisfied. And it brought this fantastic visual element that I wasn't expecting where they could have just made a very generic looking movie. But the fact that it was so immersive, it was so bright and colorful, it fit the story perfectly. Hands down, the best quote from the movie Fist My bump. And that's all I'm gonna say about that. If you haven't seen Project Hail Mary yet, it is probably still playing at some theater around you. It keeps coming back into theaters. It'll probably still be a while before it is available for you to watch at home. Just because it has been dominating this year. But at number two in the best movies of the decade so far I have Project Hail Mary. Do I want to get to some honorable mentions here because I have so many Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Fantastic movie. Superman. A real pain. That movie just kind of wrecked me emotionally too just because I identified so much with Jesse Eisenberg's character. The menu the Worst Person in the World Top Gun Maverick, the Wild Robot One of my favorite animated movies so far of the decade. Nope. Was a great movie from Jordan Peele. Promising young woman in 2020. If I would have included one movie from that year would have been Promising Young Woman then we've had some pretty good to decent Pixar movies like Inside out two and Hoppers and Wicked and Past Lives, the Holdovers, Train Dreams, K Pop Demon Hunters, Palm Springs, which also got me through the pandemic air, Long legs, twisters. But now my number one movie of the decade so far goes to Godzilla minus one. That came out at the very end in December of 2023. Favorite quote of this movie, just Godzilla's roar as he is charging up. This was one that I didn't know going into it how much I was going to love it. And over the course of my life, I probably would not have even called myself a Godzilla fan. I remember enjoying the movie from the 90s primarily because they did a promotion with Taco Bell where they had cups and toys. And being a kid in the 90s and my mom working at Taco Bell, I had all the Godzilla toys from that. The movie itself, not so good. And then we had the Godzilla movies of the 2010s. And then more recently we've seen Godzilla fighting King Kong. But these have all been the American version of Godzilla. But Godzilla -1 is the Japanese version, which is the best version, the original version. So it didn't just give us an action movie, a sci fi movie. I feel like to me, Godzilla is a period piece, a war movie, a drama, more so than it is those that we see and feel from the American version. And there is a really great story about redemption and overcoming fear, fighting for your country, and also just proving to people that you are worthy, that you can provide for your family and not be a coward. There is a great story here where Godzilla really represents your big bad in your life. Happens to be a giant monster that breeds fire and can destroy an entire city in a mere amount of seconds. But it is really about overcoming your fears, overcoming your demons. It is a story about redemption and you don't really get that in the American version of Godzilla. You just get, here's Godzilla fighting a monkey and here we go. No story really needed. The human element doesn't really exist. But I went into this movie not being a Godzilla fan and left truly enamored with the character. I went and watched all the more recent Japanese versions of Godzilla, like Shin Godzilla, and really fell in love with the character where. Now Godzilla minus zero is one of my most anticipated movies of the fall, coming out on November 6th of this year. If you haven't seen Godzilla minus one, there's even a black and white version on Netflix as well. It is my favorite movie of the decade at number one, Godzilla minus one. But I'll close us out with this. The top 10 worst movies of the decade so far at number 10. A Christmas Story Christmas, which came out in 2022. And I won't say that the movie ruined the legacy of A Christmas Story because there was a Christmas Story too, that came out in 2010. And I don't think it tarnished the history of this Christmas classic because I really don't think that many people watched it. But that movie felt insulting to me. I don't know why they made that movie. At number nine, I have Five Nights at Freddy's two. Didn't love the first one in theaters, but a lot of people told me that I was ridiculous for not enjoying that movie, that I didn't understand it. So I was like, all right, let me go see Five Nights at Freddy's 2 now that I'm a little bit more in the mood. But one of my worst in theater experiences of the decade so far. I wanted to leave so bad. And from about the 20 minute mark till the end, I just kind of hate watched it. Did not like that movie whatsoever. I hope they don't get any more sequels to that. At number eight is the Flash, mainly due to the fact that there was so much expectation going into it with Michael Keaton coming back. It was supposed to be kind of a rival to Spider man creating this multiverse and it totally fell flat. The special effects and the CGI were terrible in this movie. The at number eight, I have the Flash. At number seven is Madame Web. There's some movies that are so bad, it's kind of fun to watch and be like, oh, look how terrible this movie is. This movie is just so bad that it's bad. Terrible. Writing the scene that stands out to me so much is whenever Madame Web just leaves and all these characters are kind of just chilling without her and then she kind of comes back and they're all just chilling. And it doesn't really explain that she just kind of left them hanging. Terrible, terrible movie. At number seven is Madame Web. At number six is Rebel Moon, which at one time it was dubbed as Zack Snyder creating his own version of Star Wars. And this entire first movie and they made a second one. I watched the first one, didn't like any element of it. The slow mo in it was just so distracting. And then When Rebel Moon 2 came out, I watched maybe 20, 30 minutes of it and I couldn't do it anymore. Probably one of the biggest fails of the decade so far. At number five is Pinocchio. This was just a bad indication of what was going to come with all of these Disney live action remakes. But you have Tom Hanks just being. He just wanted the money at this point. That movie was also so insulting to me because Pinocchio is a classic. But keep him animated. At number four, what Happens later, which was a Meg Ryan movie that takes place primarily in an airport. And I think this was at a time where Kelsey and I were just trying to get the most out of our Regal Unlimited. And we're like, yeah, we'll go watch the new Meg Ryan movie. I don't think most people have even heard of, let alone seen this movie. It was terrible. It felt like Meg Ryan was just on screen kind of winging it because it's her and David Duchovny, and she also directed this movie. And you can tell at number three is Amsterdam, which I was so excited to see this movie. You have Christian Bale. You had Taylor Swift in this movie. It had one of the most impressive casts of the decade. But oftentimes now when you go watch a movie and the entire cell of it is all the people featured in the ensemble cast. Margot Robbie was in this. Rami Malek was in this. Mike Myers, Michael Shannon. The list is so impressive. But I remember walking into the theater and seeing the poster which said nothing about the movie. It just said Amsterdam. And the entire poster was just everybody's name in it. I was like, oh, no, they're setting me up here for a bad time. And the movie was awful. At number two is Black Adam. Mainly because kind of like the Flash in the DC world, it was also just a major disappointment. I ended up buying into the Black Adam train. I thought the Rock is a superhero was gonna be fantastic. But I think he is the reason this movie wasn't good. Why all the action just didn't fit and didn't look right. It was one of the most unmemorable superhero movies I have ever seen. But at number one is a little movie that was never supposed to come out. And I kind of feel bad for Ice Cube at this point because he thought this movie would never see the light of day. The worst movie of the decade and maybe one of the worst movies of all time is War of the Worlds. They filmed this thing during the pandemic, mostly over zoom, where director wasn't even on during all of the filming. There are scenes where it's literally just Ice Cube reading off of his screen like this. Here is the line I am supposed to read. And it was also basically just a huge Amazon prime ad, which I understand. Product placement. You have to pay your bills. You have to fund your movie. I don't hate on it. Just make it a little bit more subtle than they did in the War of the Worlds where it was so obvious. Where you have characters literally ordering things off Amazon and explaining how Amazon delivery works. Sending other characters Amazon gift cards. Wild work. To think that people wouldn't totally be turned off by that. But at number one, the worst movie of the 2020 so far. War of the Worlds. I'll come back and give my spoiler free review of Hokum.

I really had to make a decision because I caught myself getting that frog in my throat and starting to get teary as I'm narrating some of these sections and it's like, okay, yo, yo, yo, is this indulgent? And I really thought about it. I was like, no. At this point it would kind of be betraying the trust the author and the listener have in telling this story if I don't go through it. But there's places in this book that that deeply, emotionally affected me and I left it on the mic. That's great because it served the story. People will say like, oh my God, I cried at the end. It's like, yeah dude, me too.

Let's get into it now. A spoiler free Movie review of Hokum People are calling this the scariest movie of the year, and to that I say you're probably right. But there haven't been many movies that have rivaled it so far. I did love Undertone earlier this year, which was the movie about two podcasters getting all these crazy files and then uncovering this mystery. This movie was not only scarier than that movie, but just overall a much better experience. What this movie is about you have Adam Scott, who you would know from Parks and Rec and now Severance, which has put him way back on the map. He plays an alcoholic writer who is just a complete, utter jerk. I've never wanted bad things to happen to a character in a horror movie ever because he is so insufferable, a horrible human to everybody he encounters. But what happens in this movie is he travels from America to Ireland to this really creepy hotel. And he goes there with the intention of spreading his parents ashes, who you learn all about how they died and probably a lot of the reason why he is so awful and has all these inner demons that he is fighting. But he goes there to visit this big redwood tree. For some reason, they went to this really creepy hotel for their honeymoon. You learn that there is a witch that apparently haunts the entire thing. And then you meet all these crazy people who work at the hotel that have very well defined personalities and roles and jobs. Kind of felt like you were playing the board game Clue and they all play integral parts in this story. But let's get into the horror elements now, which I think were fantastic. This movie is a bit of a slow burn at times. Even though I feel like this movie was one of my favorite punk rock songs and trimmed all the fat, it got right to it because it opens up with him in his house writing this story. And you as the viewer, you see the story he is writing, which is these two people out at the desert. And you see him just going away on his laptop. And it cuts to what he is writing actually being shown on the screen and then him there writing it. And right at the very beginning, there's some action, there's some creepy things happening. It wastes no time, like a lot of horror movies do with giving you this huge backstory or giving you a lot of fluff at the beginning to try to paint the picture of who this person is. It really tells you all you need to know about Adam Scott's character in those opening 10 minutes. You see him writing and drinking, so you know he has a bit of a problem. And then you see how awful and confrontational he is and smug with everybody that he encounters. And if you've ever encountered a person like this in real life, oh, man, you're gonna be triggered by this movie. What I loved about the horror elements in Hokum is it didn't rely on a bunch of cheap tricks to scare you. The actual tension that it creates with all these things that build through the cinematography that put you right there in there and make you feel scared to be alone at any moment in this movie, which is what this film heavily relies on, because the witch that haunts this hotel is supposed to be living in the honeymoon suite. And the entire story is building up to what is actually going on inside that honeymoon suite. And you just want to know and you want to get inside that door. And when characters do go in there, it gives you that sense of fear. It is such a well designed room, which I think sometimes set design doesn't get enough credit. But by doing such a good job at building out that room and giving you all these avenues to go down, all these back passages, it reminded me so much of a modern day Shining. Because this movie felt very old school horror to me through a fresh lens, where there were things that felt very familiar, maybe ripped out of the 1930s or 40s or 50s style of horror movies, but then it felt very fresh and modern with the characters. And overall, when it comes to the design of some of the monsters, I loved it. There is one single image from Hokum that will give you nightmares. And the only thing I wish is that we would have had more encounters with that character. Really only gets one big scene, but that scene is so freaky and bone chilling that it left me wanting more. And I think sometimes that is a good thing because if it leaves you wanting more, it shows you that it didn't overload you with the monster the entire time. It kind of enticed you for the most part. You just get these little glimpses and it's almost what you build inside your head that makes it scarier. But on the other side of that, I almost felt like they didn't give you enough. It's kind of like when you go through the lunch line and they just give you one scoop of your favorite food that day in elementary school and you're like, yo, this is not enough to fill me up. That is kind of how I felt after it. Instead of filling my belly, leaving me full and satisfied, it was not enough to live off of. And I think that is the only thing I hold against this movie. But again, I think that was by design. If we would have had more of those characters, I don't think it would have been as impactful. It kind of reminded me of Insidious, where there's that one frame specifically that we all know. Where we see that monster, we see that demon. And that image alone just burns inside your brain and still terrifies you. That is what Hokum had very much. One single frame, one single scene that remains in my brain. And even though I saw it going into it in the trailer and a lot of the imagery of this movie, it still scared the crap out of me. And I saw it in a full theater, which I also think added to the experience. The Person next to me was like this the entire time. So I was also going into it knowing how scary other people were saying. So maybe I had my guard up a little bit too much throughout that I didn't really feel as terrified as some of the other people in the theater. So I didn't love it because I thought it was the scariest movie I've ever seen. I just thought it was a really well crafted, directed. Adam Scott gave an amazing performance in this, which I really love him leaning more into horror because overall I saw it almost more as a drama because this movie feels so personal to our main character here and all that he goes through, all that he is dealing with, see a lot of character development. So I really think it was his character that went through more. So that is where the story is. You just happen to have some really crazy monsters and witches thrown in there in a really creepy hotel. This movie comes to us from director Damian McCarthy, who, he's Irish, so that is why this movie takes place in Ireland. He's also directed movies like caveat in 2020, oddity in 2024. And I think he is definitely one of those people who is one of the new modern voices in horror. I would put Zach Kreger on that list. Oz Perkins, who did Long Leg, the Monkey. I would also put the Filippo Brothers who did Talk to Me and Bring Her Back. These are all directors who are bringing back that old school style of horror, but giving it a facelift and also crafting it for our generation and our attention spans. Because I think all the horror movies that have gotten it wrong and flopped in the last few years have not adapted, have not shown that. Okay, we need to have some really dynamic characters. And we also need to cut out all the crap, keep all the best stuff and put that in there and create something that truly shows your voice. That is what all those directors do. This movie feels like he is the only person who could have crafted this because it feels so personal. And that is what I want going into a horror movie. As the story went along, I was just relishing in all the moments that left us in the dark. Some of the framing on these shots and seeing little characters come out from the corner, that started to freak me out. Something that hokum did that not many horror movies could do. It made you scared without a lot of blood and guts, very minimal blood spillage, but it didn't need it. But it gave us unique characters, a big problem, a mystery. And Adam Scott, what else do you need? I personally would love to see a Hokum two. And as much as I hate prequels, I do want to know what is going on with with the monsters of this movie because I think they are truly fascinating because those characters were that intriguing. So if you are a horror movie fan, this is definitely one you need to check out this year for Hokum. I give it 4 out of 5 honeymoon sweets

It's time to head down to Movie Mike's Trailer Park.
Movie Mike
This might be what we all need right now. Super Troopers 3 is coming out in theaters on August 7th. The guys are back. They have done it. The fact that the original movie came out back in 2001 really didn't do well at the box office. But through VHS and DVDs, which I never really owned a copy of Super Troopers, it was one of those movies that just kind of existed. It came out, people would pass it around and just through word of mouth. You really don't get these type of movies anymore because everything is streaming and digital. But movies that just had a life of their Own well after they were ever in theaters and through mainly, I guess, like teenagers like me. When this movie came out, I was not even a teenager in 2001. I was like 10 years old. But it's. If you grew up with like an older brother or older cousins who are watching these type of movies and you would just seek these out, like, this is the genre that I craved as a kid because it felt forbidden. Anything R rated or vulgar or something that felt like my parents would be really upset if they found out I watched it. Although now, looking back on it, there's a level of wholesomeness to Super Troopers where the movie really doesn't punch down. All the comedy is them making fun of themselves. And all these actors are all friends. They are a comedy troupe known as Broken Lizard, which is kind of like our generation's Monty Python where they have been doing movies now since like 1996 and have had continued success in this department where they put out movies that don't do well with critics. If you look at all the scores to the site, we do not mention on this podcast, but if you look at all their critics scores, they are low in the 30s, 20s, tens even for their movies. But if you look at the audience score, it is so much higher. Where Super Troopers 1 is a 37 versus a 90 audience score, part 2 is a 35 versus a 64 audience score. So that tells you that these movies are not for critics. They are for the fans who just want to go in, watch something that enables them to have a really good time. And a lot of people who watch these movies probably partake in some other substances before going to watch these movies that maybe could enhance your viewing experience. Not for me, but I could see why these movies did really well for people who wanted to watch a late night movie and maybe get some Taco Bell. But you have not only all the Broken Lizard guys back, but you also have all of the original cast from the first movie. They are trying to bring down a new drug ring. And Farva, who is my favorite character of the Super Troopers, is now engaged to Thorny's sister. So a lot of chaos, a lot of R rated fun. They even slipped something in and found a way to not get flagged by the YouTube censors. But before we get into more, here is just a little bit of the Super Troopers 3 trailer. I'll play it right. Meow. Well, well, well. It isn't the old timers passing the torch to the new generation.

Movie Mike
Only 2012. I guess a lot to do. Here I come, babe. Come get your cream, girl.
Broken Lizard Member
I'm gonna stop the sweating.
Movie Mike
So that is the premise of the movie. Them trying to take down a drug ring and Thorny trying to stop Farva from marrying his sister. But in addition to the original cast coming back, you also have a cameo from Chase Crawford, who I now know primarily as the Deep on the Boys and where he does a fantastic job of playing the dumbest superhero you have ever met. And I am so invested in that show right now. But I think you have guys like him who probably grew up loving the original movie and now are probably like, I get to be in the next Super Troopers movie. Like, that would be a really cool role to do. You get so famous that you get to be a part of your childhood. That's just the coolest thing ever. Because I've actually been able to interview these guys on this podcast before. The clip of mine that has gone the most viral on every single platform. No matter where I post the clip of them talking about from the original movie, how they filmed that scene of them actually eating the syrup, it goes viral every time. And now that this trailer came out, it is popping off yet again because people are just searching Super Troopers and discovering that clip.
Broken Lizard Member
Never again chugging maple syrup. Never again.
Movie Mike
Is that the one you regret the most? Putting the maple syrup in there? Because now everybody wants that one.
Broken Lizard Member
Really almost killed us.
Movie Mike
So it was real maple syrup?
Broken Lizard Member
Yeah. He drank. I drank two and a half, and I made him drink three and a half because I'm like, you don't have it yet? Well, let's do another couple takes. And afterwards, I had to go shoot a love scene which didn't even make the movie. But anyway, I mean, we were. We at lunch, we laid down in the dark in my trailer and just shook all for the entire 30 minutes. Just shook. And then. And then when I got back to the. The hotel, he. I saw him coming out. He goes, have you pooped yet? And I'm like, no. He goes, report back to me after
Movie Mike
you wait for it.
Broken Lizard Member
And he goes, there's a reason it's part. Maple syrup's part of the. Of the master cleanse. Things came out of me I don't remember putting in like. Like a fossilized robin fetus. I was like, I don't remember that. Spark plug.
Ray Porter
Yeah.
Movie Mike
So I got to interview them. Getting to hang out with them and learn more about the making of this movie, how they approach comedies, and why we don't see a whole lot of comedies now because they are seen as such big financial risks. That was a really cool thing. I got to tell them all about my favorite quote. So if you missed that episode, if you just search Movie Mike's Movie podcast, Super Troopers, you will find that interview. We did it in person probably a few years ago now when their last movie, Quasi, came out, which was their last film that didn't even come out in theaters. It was a straight to Hulu movie, but they still did a screening for it here in town, which was interesting. That's the first time I've ever gone to a screening of a movie that wasn't actually going into theaters. And I thought that movie played well to an audience. And if I watched it only on streaming, I don't know if I would have had as good of a time. Because there's something about watching comedies like this, whether it's in a group full of strangers or it's with your friends at your house, these movies deserve to be appreciated with other people because it makes it more fun. So that was just a first for them to not have a movie come out in theaters. And hopefully that did pretty well. And now they get to put this one out back in theaters. But if you go back to. Their first movie was called Puddle Cruiser that came out back in 1996. It was a romantic comedy set on a college campus, which became their feature debut. They all look so young in that movie. And while it is very low budget, you see the writing is there. They're dynamic. Isn't as punchy as it develops into later in 2001 with Super Troopers, but the mechanics are there. A pretty good debut, although I don't think I would really recommend to go back and start with that one. You got to start with Super Troopers that came out in 2001 about them working as Vermont state troopers. So many quotable lines. I think for me, my top five, it changes year by year. But at number five, my favorite Super Troopers quote would have to be enhance. Enhance, where it's just thorny sitting at his computer, probably because it's been arguably the biggest meme from Super Troopers. At number four, where Super Troopers has one of the best comedic openings of all time. That scene where they pull over the stoners and then mess with them. It's one of the best openings where comedies just don't have great opening scenes anymore. That is what I'm talking about. But they keep messing with them of coming up to the window, going back to their car, driving off, and then coming back. And then they pull them over one time and then they re pull them over and tell them to pull over further. And then the one guy yells out the window, he can't pull over any further. Also from that scene at number three would be the guy who was sitting in the back seat. And as soon as they got pulled over, the two guys were like, we have all these drugs. You need to take one for the team and eat them. So he ingests all the drugs that they had in their car to avoid them being found by the state troopers. And then he's freaking out and he licks the window of the back of the cop car. And he's like, the snozzberries taste like snozzberries. Which blew my mind as a kid. At number two would probably be Thorny's quote, Mother of God. When he sees the guy zoom past him speeding, and it ends up being his own guy. Great quote. I would say that's probably the second most memeable quote from Super Troopers. And at number one, hands down, is when Farva goes to the fast food restaurant and he just starts ordering food and not making any sense. He starts it off, he wants a double bacon cheeseburger, and then he wants a liter of cola. And they get into a big fight about the leader of cola. But even in there, when he's like, give me a pie, apple. Everything Farva says in Super Troopers one is classic. Now, the thing about making sequels is if you do the exact same thing again in Part two, people are gonna say it's the exact same thing as the first one. They did all the same jokes. I fear that Super Troopers 2 didn't deliver on the comedy because they needed to make it so much different then Part one in order to appease fans. It also came so long after the first one, where the first one came out. In 2001, we didn't get Super Troopers 2 until 2018, and this time it took place with them being in Canada. And I remember enjoying it just because it was Super Troopers 2. But I found overall that story wasn't as memorable. So now I am hoping. And from what I see so far in the trailer In Super Troopers 3, it looks like I hate this phrase. But they're getting back to their roots going back as Highway Patrol and making fun of things now that you find in today's world, at the beginning of that trailer, they get their first ever all electric patrol car. They're ordering stuff on uber eats and DoorDash and trying to navigate the waters of making a raunchy comedy in 2026. Although I think it can be done by these guys because they know how to make comedies that aren't making fun of celebrities, aren't making fun of any types of people. They are just making fun of themselves in the most ridiculous way. The only thing I hope that this movie improves on some of the stunts, where I think that's what made the first movie so memorable, is they committed to doing a lot of physical comedy. That really stands out. Even the clip I was talking about earlier of them actually ingesting that amount of maple syrup for the bit. I hope they were as committed in Super Troopers 3, because I do see some scenes in there that feel like it's a little movie magic, a little cgi. I think that rawness of them committing to the comedy is what sets these movies apart. And they've been doing that all throughout, all the Broken Lizard movies. Going back to the first Super Troopers movie they put out, Club Dread in 2004 was their version of a slasher comedy taking place in a tropical island resort. That movie was all right, but then they dropped a banger in 2006, Beer Fest, which I would say is the only movie, to me, that rivals the first Super Troopers, depending on the day. Sometimes I like Beer Fest more than Super Troopers just because I feel like their actual comedic skills come out a little bit more. I think there's some really funny jokes, but 2006's Beer Fest is their second best movie, sometimes their first best movie. To me, they had the slammin salmon in 2004 that took place at a restaurant. Kind of like their version of waiting Super Troopers 2 in 2018 and then Quasi came out in 2023. So that is a really good filmography for people who are famous to a very select group of people. And I'm talking guys like me who grew up in the 90s, early 2000s. Maybe you wear glasses. If you saw these guys out at a bar, you would freak out. You would probably want to buy them a beer or watch them chug a beer. And they get that all the time. They also get probably out of a lot of speeding tickets now because of people who are my age and are now working in law enforcement. And they grew up loving this movie. But if you just look at the landscape right now of all these movies being revived, we're getting a Jackass movie this year. We just got a Mortal Kombat movie. We also just got the Devil Wears Prada too. So it is a great time to be alive right now, if you are alive in the 90s and 2000s, because it kind of feels like we're living in the 2000s again, where everything that was old is cool again. But again, Super Troopers 3 is coming out in theaters on August 7th, and that's all for right Meow.

And that was this week's edition of Movie Mike's Trailer park.
Movie Mike
And that is gonna do it for another episode here of the podcast. But before I go, I gotta give my listener shout out of the week. I have a couple to hand out this week. First, go over to Instagram in the DMS and shout out Mackenzie who DM me in reply to last week's episode saying, I was wondering if y' all would ever discuss the drama. I was so curious to hear yalls take yes, MacKenzie, if you listen to last week's episode where Kelsey and I recapped all the best and worst movies from April, we finally talked about the drama. I was gonna do a review of the drama when it came out in theaters, but I felt like the only way to discuss that movie was to get into all the nitty gritty details about the plot. And even though I don't know if it's technically a spoiler because it happens, I would say at the end of the first act and the catalyst for really all the friction throughout the movie, the actual drama that causes all of that felt too much like a spoiler to me because it's one of those movies that the less you know about it, the more you enjoy it. So I didn't want to do that. But we did talk about it and mention it in last week's episode. The drama is now available on digital, so if you want to watch it at home, it is that 20 to $25 range. If you don't want to pay that amount, which I think that is really worth it when multiple people are watching it. Because if you think about it, the price you would pay to go out to the theater, it's a little bit more justified when you can spend that amount of money and two or three people actually watch the movie. Or you could just wait because it will come out on HBO Max streaming probably in July and August because it is a 24 movie and most of all the a 24 movies go over to HBO Max. But that is my first shout out of the week and we have a bonus shout out. Shouting out Trisha, who replied to the clip I posted about The Devil Wears Prada 2 where I said it's the big three in that movie and Kelsey argues, no, it is the big four and I wanted to know everybody else's opinion because still to me, I think if you really had to and you didn't have the budget, you could make that movie work with just Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt. But for the most part everybody disagrees and says you need Stanley Tucci. And Trisha replied saying it is the top four for sure. So if you missed that review of the Devil Wears Prada too, that all happened last week. Thank you everybody for sharing your thoughts on that movie. That was a fun movie to talk about. So hope you have a great rest of your week and until next time, go out and watch good movies and I will talk to you later. I'm U.S. transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. HIV Awareness PSA Speaker
Honestly, honestly, honestly, no one wants to think about hiv, but there are things that everyone can do to help prevent it. Things like prep. PREP stands for Pre Exposure Prophylaxis, and it means routinely taking prescription medicine before you're exposed to HIV to help reduce your chances of getting it. Prep can be about 99% effective when you taken as prescribed. It doesn't protect against other STIs, though, so be sure to use condoms and other healthy sex practices.
