Actually, when I was seven years old, man. I've had a 51 year career, so. Yeah, I worked a long time, man. Thank God. I'm just grateful that I've had a creative life. But I started when I was 7. I did a play with Steve Allen wow day in the 70s, and then I did commercials. I did stuff like that. It was more of a hobby as a kid, you know.

How'd you get into it? Like, did you. Was your mom into it? Like?

[Anthony Michael Hall]

My mother was a singer at Mercedes Hall. She's a singer, jazz performer. Singer. And raised me on her own till I was 12. And she remarried my father and they had my sister. So I grew up here in the city, but I'm from Boston originally.

[Robert Kelly]

Right. Yeah. You lived in the city for a while. And then you moved to LA, right?

[Big Jay Oakerson]

Correct.

[Anthony Michael Hall]

Yeah, long time ago. About 30 years ago.

I don't want to. I don't want to jump around too much on stuff, but I'd say probably the first things, obviously, when I was young, that I saw you and that, like, hit me particularly with Breakfast Club, obviously, and to this day, Mount Rushmore comedies for me, Weird Science.

And again, it was maybe my age of something hitting it along with the lines. But it's so interesting to go back and watch that movie again, even, like, the years that I showed my daughter that movie when she got older.

Well, you know what it came from as a kid, man, I was that kid growing up, it wasn't into film or actors or acting. My heroes were, you know, athletes or comics. So growing up as a kid in the 70s, man, I was listening to class clown Richard Pryor, Carlin and Pryor, man. I'd be in my room listening to them constantly. So a lot of that stuff came from just imitating bits of Pryor to John Hughes as a kid. And it would crack him up and he'd be like, don't do that. You know, so we're getting high in Breakfast Club. Like, Cheeks came out, like, whatever the hell that voice came from, it was inspired part by largely those albums of the 70s or prior. When he's in the comedy club, you can hear the dishware and people drinking and eating at the club, you know, 70s albums.

It's just amazing. So that was just like. So by the time we got to Weird Science, to your point, you know, he set that scene up. It was largely written then we just freestyle, you know.

I did a movie called out of bounds in 85. And it was a way to kind of depart from it. And it was an action movie and it was just a great opportunity, so I took it. But yeah, in fairness and in all honesty, yeah, I always had that. You know, I don't want to be known as just that thing, you know, so it kept my ass working for the next 40 years.

Great. It was goofy character that. And communicating community. In recent years, like, comedies that I did where the writing was so good, like, honestly, I didn't get some of this till after I did it right. I'm watching on TV two years, I was like, that's hilarious.

It was the first week we had a miscarriage.

I didn't realize that he's holding on to the baby weight joke was gonna fucking send you in a spiral. I thought it was just a funny thing to say when a. When a guy makes the mistake of saying I had a baby at whatever. You always make the joke.
