Well, he, you know, Godfrey's always been a killer on stage. Always kills energy. He's just crazy. And. And then he popped him in. But then he, you know, he kind of ran into that thing where you kind of pop and, you know, it didn't happen. But every, like, a very underrated dude. Gorgeous, good looking, in shape, funny, charismatic, confident. But then during the pandemic, he started going live every night, like, two in the morning, until five, like, hours would just go live. And he built this massive fan base himself just by going live on Instagram every night for hours. And just. I saw it. It went from, like, what was going on. Went from like 100 people to thousands of people watching him at the time.

[Eddie Pepitone]

What was he doing?

[Bobby Lee]

Just. Yeah, doing what he does best. Godfrey can yap. He's like, sherrod. They can talk.

[Eddie Pepitone]

They're not talking with somebody, just talking.

[Bobby Lee]

Talking to himself. Talking to the people in the room, reading the comments, talking back just by himself. And he built this massive fan base from it, you know, and kind of built a career from A career, huh? Well, he had a career, but, you know, there's, you know, this industry accepted career, which I think we all. And then there's a point where you got to kind of, you know, you made your own bones. I made our own fan base outside of the industry, and he did the same thing.

I didn't waste too many years trying to get mainstream bones, which I'm happy about. You know, I mean, I don't feel that I have a gut. Like, I always look back pretty quick. I mean, I'm sure I've done hundreds of auditions in my life.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah.

[Eddie Pepitone]

Now probably not even. But, like, it's almost the point. Like, I've done, like, I hated auditioning. And then when I look back on it, it wasn't a major part of my life. Like, I did it, you know, several times in relation to how long I've been doing comedy for him was just very quickly, was like, I don't care about this.

[Bobby Lee]

Most of them. Most auditions you go on are pointless. They already knew. They already know the guy. It's already. They already know. It's down to three or four dudes, maybe two. They already know who they want. All those people have to do is not it up and ask for too much money or fail the other day. So it's like we're going in just to fill a quota.

[Eddie Pepitone]

I just never liked it. I didn't care about this, the outcome of it, for the most part. No. Here and there would be. Sometimes you'd get like, oh, this is for a show that I like or something. Or this is a show that I actually watch, so it'll be neat to be on an episode.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah.

[Eddie Pepitone]

But for the most part, it was like, you couldn't get me hyped up about a show. It's like, hey, they want you to play, like, a hot dog vendor in a scene on, like, you know, General Hospital or something. I couldn't care less.

[Bobby Lee]

Right. I mean, everything I got was from the. Already I just got it.

[Eddie Pepitone]

Yeah.

[Bobby Lee]

Yeah, it was. Yeah, you got it. Yeah. You know, I had auditioned, like, as a. Whatever. Yeah. But anything that was worth having, I very rarely did. I. I mean, Law and Order, but that was easy because they did a million episodes. So you. You would go in.

You were on 996,000 of them.

I was, I think, five or four. And I looked different in every single one. I. I went from hair to fat to skinny to bald.

[Eddie Pepitone]

You saw them. I get so excited. I see you or Ben Bailey would

show up in one, go in for the audition. There's only usually 10 people for your role. Or five. And as soon as you walk out with within 10 minutes, you knew you got it.

How many comics out there don't like, know out of the gates they don't give a fuck about? Acting had nothing to do with like a crossover of anything else other than doing like kind of stand up.

[Bobby Lee]

I mean, I've always liked. I've done both.

[Eddie Pepitone]

I know. I'm saying, like, it was almost expected when you got into comedy in New York. When I started up here, it was like. And now you start taking the steps also towards acting. You're writing a script, you're auditioning for things you're doing. And I was. It all struck me right away where I was kind of like, wait, write a script? Like, for what? What's your story, man? What's the sitcom? I go, I don't. I don't. Never thought about sitcoms. Like, I was like, I thought we're doing like stand up comedy.

[Bobby Lee]

Well, that was.

[Eddie Pepitone]

Who's your commercial agent to do what? He goes, oh, I got a Ben Gay commercial last year. Actually paid for my whole year. And you're like, I get. The idea is if you get something, you don't have to work a day job and you can put more in the comedy, I guess. But I was just like, you guys should get into the black circuit. If you work the black circuit, they pay you money.

[Bobby Lee]

You can do the black circuit or you can just live in squalor like me and have rent be so cheap that you, you don't have to.

[Eddie Pepitone]

Oh, I live in shit places. I just also. I just paid for. With the black circuit.

[Bobby Lee]

I lived. I lived in garbage for a long time. But I mean, when I started comedy was with the improv group, and then we got into stand up and then I quit comedy for two years.

Alan the Sprinkles.

[Bobby Lee]

Alan the Monkeys. Not the Sprinkles would have been a better name, by the way. Alan the Sprinkles on the Bundle of sticks. But yeah, I quit. I was gone for two years. Billy, Patrice Dane, all those guys were doing stand up. And I was. I made a. I made a movie, then another movie, then I did a play, Off Broadway play in Boston for like seven months.

And then I went.

I thought you'd play special time into a play, Meatball. I mean, ball says what?

I. I went back to. I remember going back to the clubs and everybody was working and into the clubs and I had to start over it sucked. Like. Like they were all getting up and they were good. Like, I remember watching Patrice and Billy just kill. And I was just.

Just trying to figure it out.

Nah, I was just trying. They wouldn't even let me on stage. I had to just sit and wait and wait for somebody to get a spot. Sucked.

It's so funny seeing people now just in life even where, like, Metzger's at. Cause he's like one of my oldest friends too. Just picture us both, like sitting in the back of the Laugh House in Philadelphia hoping to get on all that kind of the small time politics of it all. Like, so and so's coming in and bumping. It's like you didn't even do good on Comic View.

I got bumped in.

[Eddie Pepitone]

We're getting bumped for beefy funny, you know, whatever some crazy name.

I got bumped at the Boston Comedy Club one night by. It was Jim Brewer. And then I got bumped by Jay Moore. And then I got bumped by Dave Chappelle. And then I got bumped by Red Johnny and the Round Guy. I bumped four times and just in a row.

And they just go up in Murder. And then it was like, all right, you're next. I was like, I think they turned the lights on by accident. That sucked.

The reason Hoist Gracie in the UFC right away came in there and took every professional fighter in the world and just broke their arm real quick is because no one even heard of it. Now there's a kid who would have been a world class boxer who learns jiu jitsu when they're five years. You know, I'm saying it evolves. So Hoist Gracie is nowhere near great.

Well, there's a guy who wrestles jiu jitsu, he's a black jiu jitsu wrestler, boxer. They know it all.

It's evolved. So it's like, well, Hoist Gracie wouldn't walk through the UFC at his best. At his best.

Well, you know Hickson, Gracie's son, who is the. I mean, just Hickson was the best. Gracie better than Hoist better than anybody. They put Hoist in because he was the smallest and thinnest. Just to prove a point that we're not going to put Hickson in who will murder everybody. We're going to give you this one. And he went and did it.
