Let's get to it. Time to do it.
Lauren LaRosa
I'm the homegirl that knows a little bit about everything and everybody.
2 Chainz
You know she don't lie about that, right? Lauren came in hot.
Lauren LaRosa
Hey, y', all, what's up? It's Lauren LaRosa. And this is the latest with Lauren LaRosa. This is your daily dig on all things pop culture, entertainment news, and all of the conversations that shake the room. Now it is time for one of those conversations because I was at. Well, I had the privilege of joining two chains in conversation. Live in conversation during this year's culture con that took place Here in New York City and Culture Con is all about the creatives, but I think it's a great place for you to understand and learn about business and storytelling and, you know, how to bridge the gap between the two to make a successful career from the successful person themself. So that's what I talk to 2 Chainz about you. He also has a new book. And he also has a new book, the Voice in My Head Is God, that drops early March. And he has a film out. It's called Red Clay. It's not out yet yet. It's actually being seen at film festivals all over right now. But it's very personal. He's opening up about his mother's addiction for the first time. He's opening up about, you know, the internal conversations he has with himself. And we get into why right now and all the things. Take a listen to 2 Chainz and I at CultureCon. How are you doing?
2 Chainz
Good. Y' all doing? How you doing?
Lauren LaRosa
We are doing amazing, man. I am really excited for this conversation. I want to start off because we talk about a lot of your accolades getting you on out here, but we got a new one to add. Author. You have your book coming. The voice is in my. I'm sorry. The voice in my head is God. That is a heck of a title. Can you talk to me a little bit about the title and choosing the title, the name of the book?
2 Chainz
Well, when I chose the title of my book, I was working on a book, and I was doing my best not to be compared to any other artists. A lot of artists like to do autobiographies that are sometimes trouble for deal with who struggle the most. And, you know, we all have a story to tell. We all come, you know, different tribes and backgrounds. But when I was working on this book, I had stories and I had some ideas, and I always had a voice in my head. My mom used to tell me to ask me who the hell I'm talking to. And when I was doing research for the book, I was looking at some of the mail that my pop was right before prison. And in every envelope, people would say, God is love. God is love. God is love. I rather even kind of just ignored it for a long time. And then one day, I took the ends out and I put an equal sign and I said, God equals love. Because if it ain't no love, it ain't no God. So I started building the idea from a book behind that and start, you know, really thinking. And the reason I'm right here. Yeah, Google My chicken. And what the success that I felt like I have is because I quiet down the outside noise and I listen to the voice of my head, and I feel like if God is supposed to be in you, that might be. That might be what the voice is. That's how I came up with the book.
Lauren LaRosa
Well, first of all, shout out to you, because I think when you amass so much success like you had, there are a lot of times where, you know, people don't give it on the God. And I think to see and hear you do that is for, you know, where you're on your venture. Can you talk to me a bit about what happens when the voice in your head isn't God? Can you hear other voices and noise? What's that?
2 Chainz
Yeah, so I have a chapter in my book called the bucket voice. Okay, we already got bucket voice. We. We notice something, right? And you just do it in. We'll say fuck it. But I guess the way I could tell that it's not. God ain't feeling out of you dig what I'm saying? That's kind of how I shine both the ends that I have put my book. It's not religious Facebook. It's not like I have chapters from the Bible or anything like that. I think it just deals with the serpent and wisdom that you get. I feel like men mature a little bit later than females. So I. I honestly think like my mom or popping females in my panel, they already had the superpower. This thing about being intuitive and having intuition for me and for a lot of men, I think we give that link. And so what I recognize that. I mean, I just listen to this voice doing everything. The way I go home, I'm listening to this voice. When I'm gonna put it on, I'm listening to this voice. Just everything I used to see from this voice in my head.
Lauren LaRosa
Well, you had. So right now you had, you know, your book coming, and then you had direct playtheno, which is also very vulnerable, very curseful as well. Why right now get so personal and, you know, divulge so much? Like, what was the conversation that you're having with that voice that made t sh. He's want to open up about so many things in school?
2 Chainz
Well, a lot of the things I think that I went through when I was. When I was younger, I'm embarrassed to talk about. I'm embarrassed to. To revisit. And I look at a lot of the. The art that I'm putting out now in this. A form appeal, you know, with red Clay Rashaw, phantom pills. But the relationship I have, my mom growing up that high that when I. It's in a festival run right now, so that's why people can't see it. But when I did the festival in Atlanta and I had like a meeting, real stage and Q&As. When I did my Q and A, I had. I noticed that I had my head down because I had friends in the crowd and I had relatives in the crowd and I was truly, truly, truly at best. And then when I did another, say one in Denver or another festival, I was able to keep my head on my chin up. People in the room that didn't know me and I felt like I didn't care what their opinion was. So a lot of stuff that you send to me, whether it's my short film or my vocals, be just filling some layers back and just trying to yield, you know, on my own and understanding it. You know, we all got good work.
Lauren LaRosa
You've always been a person that people point to and say, they go he you are. You clap for that. Yes, you clap for that for sure. You always, in the first step, you come to and say, you know, what you see and what you get. You're very honest, you're very authentic, you're very true to yourself. But you said you had your head down during that screening. And I, I can, you know, imagine divulging things for the first time is tough, especially where you are in your life. But personally, behind the curtain, what was it like having a conversation with your mom after she saw the film and just even in writing your book, people you talk about in the book and experiences having those conversations. What was that like for you? It wasn't traumatized rechar.
2 Chainz
It was very hard. My mom came to the set the whole week of sh. Short film but she never came inside. So she, she knew I was shooting a little bit, but she didn't really know what it was. She just is a support system. She was support. But I'm an old child, you know, that's where the city boy name came. You couldn't be like, know what I'm saying? Being in a one long ar. So he used to be like, he's just a titty baby. That's how titty boy they come to me, right? Winning a titty. No crazy, no strip boy. You know, you just. So she was there for the support. But then I got a copy of the short video and she came over to my house. You know, even serene they're going to get pulled to the tv. And for probably about. I would say about five or six weeks. I never mentioned that I had to call her back because I didn't know how she was going to react to it. In a nutshell. In a nutshell. Hold on. Hold this together. Let's see. Nutshell. Oh, my God. So, all right. In a nutshell.
Lauren LaRosa
It's okay. Take this shoe.
2 Chainz
And so in a nutshell, I had. I don't know if I had to. And I don't want to be judged, whatever, but it was a situation where I had to be the one to sell my old mom drugs. And that's what this red play thing is about. You know what I'm saying? And it's something that I don't rap about, talk about it. I don't talk about what I'm trying to be harder than the next person. I don't talk about. There's nothing like that. So when I did this film, put this film together, it's how this all came about. Me having to do this was so much that I love so much to put me. You know what I mean? It was just a struggle. But when I showed it to her, she's not there anymore. You know what I'm saying? This is old story, so. But she able to see that. Almost 75. When she able to see that right now, it's like I described as being on the other side of the mountain. It's like this tall mountain. We have reclined his mind. But now me and mom, we like on side wa everything, you know, so the film, much like the book, is very, very personal. It sound like, you know, I know I have a. A sense of humor, and I smile a lot. A lot of that was defense mechanisms that got me through high school. I would smile the pain. That was like my biggest smile. And I be hunting the most inside any of that. That's how I maneuver through, like, high school. And there's so much easy. I was just ready. Can y' all get the sound right up here? Get loud.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. No, I'm not being a pr. You're not here. But I think it's good out there. But I mean, I think the point that you're arriving at and you tell me, you know I'm wrong, but I've been my own spiritual journey. I got to a point where I was okay with dealing with the stuff I was going through because I felt like, well, that got me through this or cooking me through things. And I'm. So now I'm able to talk the bottom if I Can't kind of have almost like it's your testimony. So that's what we're witnessing. You're kind of like a testimony pages of life at this point. So I mean you're. We're happy that you here and you mentioned college. So you mentioned college. So I know you went to Al State at one point graduated from Virginia State.
2 Chainz
Yeah yeah I graduated have I have a psychology degree Greek. I don't think people know that So.
Snax
I have I think I have a.
2 Chainz
Brother brother wide range I I have everything from being locked up at 15 juvenile for position of Pokemon and a college degree and then all the stuff in between there and so I do feel like I'm qualified to talk about solar Eric. You know what I'm saying out the spirits I'm.
Lauren LaRosa
What was your college experience like? Because okay so you you have this fight that we learn in your book and in the rec league film and you guys there's a QR code you can scan to free one of the book of right behind us by the way. So you make it through all of these you know very tough moments that you just talk about and then you get to college. Were you first generation college student?
2 Chainz
No, no my mom. My mom went to school. I found out my dad went to college at his funeral I didn't even register on it like he was you know they tell but that I just still like the Hermes the prison stuff but don't go along mine some of my mothers went to school so yeah but I think I went to school like if this makes sense on my own no one forced me no one you know for a long part but to go to high school no one was waking me up going to school I just. I like going to school. I like dressing first of all I like putting up clothes. I like the female nor people think you know what I'm saying I never made a seat before my own I went and founded him when I finished school would be going if I ever met yeah I so I was able to go to school earn the scholarship and then when I get to college you learn that all you got to do is really go to class and do the work and I was able to graduate and move all with my wife but you know it's another shepherd it's like another the shelfing wiper 2.
Lauren LaRosa
Chicks which is a big challenge because I mean I'm also HBCU and I talk a lot about the experience of being on a campus and how I you get so much just from that don't Even think about the classes. The fastest are great, but just being on campus, it changes your life. How did going to an hbcu, like, how did that experience mold you into BC today right here?
2 Chainz
First of all, for me, my wife and she.
Lauren LaRosa
Oh, I didn't know that either.
2 Chainz
Okay. So you see how that turns out of the story. But I leave a lot of my friends there. I'm all, I was already a social butterfly. I like to be around people, like to be around what's going on. And so I think going to HBCU allow me to get more indoors and what culture is from different places. Because when you go to college, people from everywhere, not just from local. So I was just like a local local Jovo when I was in college, far football training or whatever that was. But when I got on a road, went to Africa, I met people from Chicago, Detroit, New York, you know, Louisiana, Florida, whatever. And I would learn. I remember when my friend from New Orleans, he put me on the hot boys and mystical stuff like that, you know what I'm saying? Just by subsistence of the youth, when a bunch of people from different areas come together like gumball, it just makes a unique experience.

We had 30 agents ready to go.

But what they find is not what they expected.
2 Chainz
Basically, your stay at home moms were picking up these large amounts of heroin. They go, is this your daughter?

They go, oh, you may not see her for like 25 years.

Hey sis, what if I could promise you you never had to listen to a condescending finance bro tell you how to manage your money again? Welcome to Brown AM is the hard part when you pay down those credit cards. If you haven't gotten to the bottom of why you were racking up credit or turning to credit cards, you may just recreate the same problem. A year from now when you do feel like you are bleeding from these high interest rates. I would start shopping for a debt consolidation loan starting with your local credit union. Shopping around online looking for some online lenders because they tend to have fewer fees and be more affordable. Listen, I am not here to judge. It is so expensive in these streets. I 100% can see how in just a few months you can have this much credit card debt and it weighs on you. It's really easy to just like stick your head in the sand. It's nice and dark in the sand. Even if it's scary, it's not going to go away just because you're avoiding it. And in fact it may get even worse. For more judgment free money advice, listen to Brown ambition on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcast.
Lauren LaRosa
You mentioned being your wife College. Love that score. We also watched your post at the and like you know all the great things. What was your conversation like with that voice in your head to five if you say, I'm going to propose. I think you guys have been together for some years. But what was that conversation? That's on the chapter of the movie.
2 Chainz
That's crazy. Okay, let me. Let me paint the picture, okay. Place like 35 yards in the plate, right? So I get invited by down up to my Versace because I'm doing a collaboration with Versace. Me and my whole busy. We got these shoes called Shane reactions with. With Versace. So they invited me in each sh. As a guest for the back. Yeah.
Mandy Money
Yes.
2 Chainz
Let's start there. So as soon as we get in. Excellent. Let's go to 5th AD and we can spend up to a hundred thousand at the Versace. So we upstairs and we drinking wine and we walk around the pistachio. Are you like this? I'll get it anyway, you know what I'm saying? So I'm like. I'm like. I was just trying to make a song I could do. They could be historic and last or after me, right? So I go to my ch. I say, man, you know, I think I'm think I'm going do this. You know what I'm saying? I think I'm going do it. And so I get the brain. I got all set up. You know what I'm saying? And so fast forward to when Pat G arrive and they sent a lady from Paris to do Keisha Baker. You don't clue somebody, you know what I'm saying? Get me makeup, shirt, suit. And we get to the met gal. Now get kind of a little nervous, but I'm like, we here now. And I remember they held the met gal over us in this property. Then they held up Galileo. And then I'm going say Ri came. So Ri came. She stole all the spot. So I said, maybe this is God send the me just dude, this another time. This is not all right. So we get out of there, we pose and stuff. So Keisha look more late and I go all night and the rain won't come out until my wife send a little loud two or four mic.
Lauren LaRosa
So now flies crazy.
2 Chainz
So I'm about to say fucking rare. I'll get crazy open the bar to make this was mess. And so some 12ft trying going in here somehow. And many many years ago teaching with blink many many years I was seeing the wrong pistons a long time and I got sh. M right and so When I when she turned around number on one knee Keisha and then I show her and that's not having much. I think all together the bulls in my head. So that's what I was supposed to do get. But I love that.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. That's something that I bit about. I know you know you play sports. You play ball in college there is a discipline about too that there have piece of conversations with God as wy like the intuition to just l the lock in and lock tail. And I think that's why your career has been so successful. Your best sense of the things that you're doing when you're deciding you know what discipline looks like for you at different faith. You know you so like dad disciple rule the state disobey if you have a group discipline. You're balancing it all. What is exactly regiment like in the conversation. Like we got a lot of things.
2 Chainz
You could be doing in those with discipline. I think you have to cut your head for me. I think with the outcome this could be a good or bad. So obviously. Well discipline enough to go to the G. You know that for us to fight I would like just to be casted and some little talk about us all dip. That's. That's thinking the right case.
Lauren LaRosa
Even like I found out we cuz I had some.
2 Chainz
Credit.
Lauren LaRosa
He Deb not franchise. What does it just change? I got this question so even at maybe breakfast question. But I know you have the rice. Make sure you scan if you are cold behind us if you want to pre order the book. But in my final question it's not if you want to know it's not working.
2 Chainz
That's make sure the call is working. Because it's a good reading now. It's a good read. The voice in my hand is God. So this book I'm saying y' all the name of the book is first is the voice in your hand with God I forgive focus your made me Chang it because he said that a lot of the buyers would think there was a religious bas I got the bro God so But I didn't want to change per God so I changed it to the voice in my head. So I was just speaking for me you might have the wicked voice. You know.
Snax
For me it's force is laughing.
2 Chainz
They told me you good thing like this. Like this.
Lauren LaRosa
Yes, I am. Now as you wrap you talk about the voice of your head. You know how it got you here where you are right now? What would you tell any of these young creators people in the audience who are struggling with real tap against the boys in their head here this is.
2 Chainz
Good thing we all have heard this is what it is. Okay this is another one here I pregame has anybody in here said something told me Something told me where did Some told me don't go there. Something told me that if you think about what something told you was just find out what that is because we all you got something we don't even social we don't so so girl I ain't going I wasn't even coming here tonight. Some told me to do it. Whatever that something is tap into that. So that's what this book is find out but there's something is find out what everybody too much something told we did come to this Something told somebody wasn't gonna come here today and then something told you to come here today and now you weren't it to be that's what that is. You got what I'm saying there. You feel that's what it is. I wasn't even gonna come up in there bread and T shirt. You know you want me Some told me to come over. Bam. I put the game my way over and now you gonna flourish and just be so prominent be great in everything.
Lauren LaRosa
At the end of each episode, I tell you guys, I am always appreciative for you guys tuning in my low riders who've been rocking out with me. Boring or not, I appreciate you guys because y' all could be anywhere with anybody talking about this stuff, hearing all the recaps. But y' all choose to be here with me every single episode. Episode: 2 Chainz chats about his mother's addiction, intuition, HBCU life and more
Date: October 6, 2025
Host: Lauren LaRosa (Special segment for The Breakfast Club; main cast: DJ Envy, Jess Hilarious, Charlamagne tha God)
Notable Guest: 2 Chainz
In this episode, Lauren LaRosa sits down with rapper, entrepreneur, and now author 2 Chainz at CultureCon, New York City. The discussion centers on 2 Chainz’s forthcoming book, The Voice in My Head Is God, and his vulnerable new film Red Clay, which touches on family, addiction, growth, intuition, and the power of owning one’s narrative. 2 Chainz opens up about childhood struggles, his mother’s addiction, navigating college and HBCU life, and the journey of learning to trust the voice within. Throughout, the tone is honest, introspective, and encouraging.
[03:35 – 05:29]
“When I was working on this book…I always had a voice in my head. My mom used to tell me to ask me who the hell I’m talking to…In every envelope, people would say, 'God is love.' I rather even kind of just ignored it for a long time. And then one day, I took the ends out and I put an equal sign and I said, 'God equals love. Because if it ain't no love, it ain't no God.'” — 2 Chainz [04:10]
[05:30 – 06:48]
2 Chainz discusses a book chapter called “the bucket voice” [the ‘f**k it’ voice], explaining:
“We notice something, right? And you just do it in, we’ll say 'f**k it.' But I guess the way I could tell that it's not God, ain't feeling out of you, dig what I'm saying? ... It's not religious...I think it just deals with the serpent and wisdom that you get. I feel like men mature a little bit later than females...For a lot of men, I think we get that link late.” — 2 Chainz [05:55]
Explains he’s come to trust his own intuition more deeply, seeing it as divine guidance.
[06:48 – 10:00]
Why Get So Personal Now:
“When I did the festival in Atlanta and…I had friends in the crowd and I had relatives in the crowd and I was truly, truly, truly at best. And then when I did another, say one in Denver or another festival, I was able to keep my head on my chin up…So a lot of stuff that you send to me…is just peeling some layers back and just trying to heal, you know?” — 2 Chainz [07:38]
Mother’s Reaction to the Film:
“It was very hard…It was a situation where I had to be the one to sell my own mom drugs. And that’s what this Red Clay thing is about…When I showed it to her, she’s not there anymore…But when she able to see that right now, it’s like I described as being on the other side of the mountain…But now me and mom, we like on side…everything, you know?” — 2 Chainz [10:05]
