Brown Girl Grinding Founder
So y' all know we always start
Lauren LaRosa
off the episode checking in behind the scenes of the grind. Guys, I did the View, like, you know, the one with, like, Goldberg, Sunny, you know, like, with the girls, like, the View. I did it shout out to Charlemagne. I mean, I don't know how he figured that out.
Brown Girl Grinding Founder
Leverage that.
Lauren LaRosa
But, I mean, him being who he is, he was able to maneuver where, you know, when he did the View this week, I was a part of the package deal. I came with him to also be on the View as well. Amazing experience. I think it's so crazy because when I woke up the morning of to do the View or to do actually to go to work, to go to Breakfast Club, I was a little nervous. I'm not even gonna lie to y'.
Lauren's Friend/Advisor
All.
Lauren LaRosa
I was a little nervous, and it wasn't like a nervous, like, oh, my God. I don't know what I'm saying. I don't know what I'm gonna do. It was, like, nervous, like, almost like butterflies. Like, it was, like, excitement, but it was just like, yo, this is the View. Like, like what? Like, what is my life right now? I. Oh, they literally say, you make a plan, and God laughs at your plan. I always have very high aspirations and goals and, you know, all the things for myself, but some of the things that God be just, like, effortlessly throwing my way and the people that he is, like, putting in my life to, like, help me grow, help me maneuver, help me, you know, all those things, I just be like, yo, what? What. What is life right now? Like, what is going on? This is a dream, and I'm literally living it in real life. So we were on the View. We talked about a few different topics, one of them being the Knicks going to the White House. And you guys know I got the statement from the White House after James Dolan went on that radio show and talked about the fact that the Knicks were going to the White House. And the statement from a White House representative basically said that they had been talking to the Knicks team, and they were excited for the team to come, and people were trying to figure out whether the Knicks are gonna go or not. So we talked about that on the View. Let's take a listen.
The View Host
Now, the owner of the Knicks, Jim Dolan, says that the team has accepted an invitation to visit Trump at the White House, and he is the owner of the team. Do you think they should go?
Lauren LaRosa
No, I don't think they should go.
The View Host
Why not?
Lauren LaRosa
I just.
Brown Girl Grinding Founder
I don't see the. I don't see the why in it.
Lauren LaRosa
I feel like this moment has been so, like, everybody's coming together, and, you know, like, I think when you start doing things like going to the White House and stuff like that, like, it gets. It divides people, and I think that we should continue to just be happy and in the glory of the win.
The View Host
What do you think, Charlamagne?
Charlamagne Tha God
You know, listen, I think that they're all grown adults, and they can do what it is that they want to do, but if they're not going to, I would like for them to tell us the reason why. Like, you know, we know that no NBA team has won a championship and has visited the White House thus far, but you should let folks know, hey, if it's a political reason why you don't want to go, let them know the reason. Right? Because I think sometimes, you know, we normalize what's going on in the White House because we don't speak out about it. Like, don't tell me that it's just a scheduling conflict, right?
Lauren LaRosa
You know what I'm saying?
Charlamagne Tha God
Give me the actual reason. Give me the actual reason why it is you don't want to be.
Lauren LaRosa
And then we were closing out the View, and they asking us about the Breakfast Club, and we started talking about ball spots.
Boost Mobile Announcer
It was such a.
Lauren LaRosa
Like a Breakfast Club coded moment, though. Take a listen. How has it been going, and why
The View Host
did you want to do this?
Lauren LaRosa
Well, it's been going good, but Charlotte may be on there talking about all this stuff behind the scenes, talking about, like, bald spots and just different things.
Brown Girl Grinding Founder
Right?
Lauren LaRosa
You have a bald spot.
The View Host
Calling him.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, I'm bald.
Brown Girl Grinding Founder
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
No, no, no, no, no.
Charlamagne Tha God
Now, so that was projection.
Lauren LaRosa
So it's been amazing, though, because I feel like we're on air and we're on the radio and we get to do the segments, but then behind the scenes, I think people get to really see how we are in real life. And I was just telling Son they grasp. They love, to be honest. It's, like, so much love and fun and people get to see that, too.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 Podcast Host
But wait, though.
Lauren LaRosa
He's saying, you have a bold spot.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 Podcast Host
And he is.
Lauren LaRosa
He is a walking, breathing listen to

Lauren LaRosa
So now, like, my family is texting me and calling me. A lot of them were texting and calling me, though, just when it was announced. Like, when Charlamagne and the View posted it, they were hitting me up about it, but over the weekend, and then I was with my family over the weekend, so, like, you know, a few of them, I got a chance to, like, you know, talk to them about it, like, the fact that it was going to be going down. So, yeah, like, man, this is crazy. And I didn't cry, y'. All. I was so happy that I did not cry. Charlemagne gonna say, you better not go in there crying either. Like, shut up. Like, leave me alone. Ain't nobody gonna cry. I do be crying, though, y', all, I believe, because I think I'd just be so grateful at what God has done in my life. And I think it's a different feeling when, like. Like, I've always had such a close relationship with God, and God has always shown up in my life, like, in major ways, like, all the time. He's always made his presence very, very known in my life. And always, like. Like, it's been times in my life where I've literally said to God, like, God, like, I. I don't know. I don't know about this one. I don't know if I believe you and if I should show up. And he literally would show up, in wager, I'm like, isn't that's nothing but him. So as I experience things like this where, like, you know, my career is unfolding in a way that only I could have dreamed of. Like, I set out to do all of this, but to see it actually happening, it's just like, what the hell is going on? Some days. But, yeah, y' all know where I'm coming from.
Brown Girl Grinding Founder
Yeah, it's just.
Lauren LaRosa
It's literally a dream come true. That full episode of the View with me and Charlemagne from June 22 is live on the Views YouTube page. They also posted some content to their Instagram and their Twitter account, so make sure you guys go check it out. And I also have a behind the scenes vlog of the day of us getting there and all of the stuff on my YouTube channel. If you're listening to this, go check out my YouTube channel. Lauren LaRosa TV L O R E N L O R O S A T V to see all of the behind the scenes leading up to the moment that we walked onto the View set.
Brown Girl Grinding Founder
I'm coming off a high.
Lauren LaRosa
If I'm checking in and telling you how I'm feeling, like I am. Like things have been going so well sometimes it's a little scary. I mean things are not always perfect though. So I do have that balance of like, yeah, things are good but like things be getting a little crazy sometimes too. But sometimes it's a little scary cuz I'm like h. Things are going so well right now. Like I'm looking over my shoulder like,
Brown Girl Grinding Founder
hold on, what's going to happen?
Lauren LaRosa
What's going on? Everybody healthy things is going good. What's going on? But I, I try to put those thoughts out of my mind because when God says he has things for you and when God promised you things, that's exactly what be happening. And I'm not mad at it at all. I am so grateful to God. To be receiving all of these blessings and to, to be able to talk about it, I think has been the biggest blessing. Like being able to share how none of this is, is, is possible without God and without me having a strong faith in God. And I was watching church over the weekend and just thinking about a lot of things like they talked about like forgiveness and fathers and you know, all of that type of stuff. And my biggest thing as I was listening to all of it is like, I just want to make sure I'm posturing correctly. And when I say posturing I don't mean like, you know how people. Sometimes I feel like posturing can come off or sound like it's coming off as like you want to make sure you're like positioned the right way and with the right people next to the right people. Like that's not what I mean when I say posturing. I want to make sure that like I'm cleaning out my, my, my heart, my soul, my spirit, all the things that I got going on and I'm, I'm not too impressed by all the time and I know can be better and like, you know, I'm a villain in somebody's story. I didn't hurt people, not physically. Well, not physically, but you know what I mean? Like everybody, like everybody come with their bs, Like I have my own bs, you got your own bs, we all come with it. But I'm really trying to do such a good job of like Correcting things in real time now, like, so that what I'm receiving is what is a direct reflection of what I'm putting out. And I just feel so blessed right now by what I'm able to do in my own life, in the life of my family and, like, the things that I'm experiencing, the opportunities that I'm getting that I feel like I would be disrespecting God if I did anything. But make sure I get right. Make sure that I am, like, faithful to him on this journey that I'm talking about it, that I am, like, literally a disciple for him right now. Because I know, like, me and him got this thing going on where, like, I knew I. I knew early on and I know currently that, like, he is walking and guiding. He is entering into those rooms before I even do. So. Yeah, yeah, this is life. Life is. Life is good right now, man. Like, it really is. And I'm so blessed to have a platform like the latest with Lauren, the Rosa, the podcast to document a lot of this. You guys have been along this journey with me for the last, like, year or so. If you got a chance to check out the View already or if you're listening to this and you're going to go check it out, I want to know what you think I want to. I want to hear from you. Make sure you hit me up on socials. Lauren LaRosa everywhere. Let me know you're low riding. You listen to the podcast and let me know how you think we did. I mean, Charlemagne's been on there several times now, but my first time, let me know how you think I did. L O R E N L O R O S A everywhere. I did forget to hug the ladies when I came out and I was like, oh, my God.

Okay, so quick behind the scenes moment about my business. Because people always ask me like, how do I actually run everything? So Shopify is literally the platform where I turned this tiny idea into a business. Before this, I was really just like popping up at any in person event, any vending opportunity I could, which I still do. But I wasn't really as focused online. I was like, you know, the websites are going to be too much to build out. I'm not like a super techie person, even though I can make things cute. And I didn't want to put up a website that would run my customers away. I wanted it to be efficient, to be easy. And Shopify helped me build brown girlgrinding.com out. Once I switched to Shopify, it finally clicked like, okay, I can actually do this. It's not about it being tough. It's about using the right platform to make it easy. Shopify takes all of the guesswork out. I build my own store, I manage my community, own my own customer relationships. Plus, this is my favorite thing. Shopify gets my products everywhere. I'm able to link stuff through Google, YouTube, TikTok, Shop, the Shop app, even ChatGPT and Instagram, which is very important for me. And Shopify's AI co founder, sidekick, game changer, let me tell y'. All, Right? So it's helped me not only optimize my site, it helps me look at my sales trends, it updates my product skills, all the stuff I'm absolutely not an expert in, but it's like having a genius business partner that never sleeps. And right now, the bronco grinding storefront and the Black Effect storefront is busy and Shopify is handling all of the heavy lifting. I love that for us. I am pumped, like so pumped that Shopify is going to show up at the Black Effect Podcast festival this year in a big way. And I will be there preaching this platform to all of the small black owned businesses that partner with us. So if you've been sitting on an idea or if you're ready to scale, which you've already started, this is your sign. Go to shopify.com Ben if I can

Lauren LaRosa
Goodbye. I took a lot of time just talking through the View and all the feelings of the things, but one of the things that the ladies on the View actually talked about was Carmelo Anthony and the fact that there, you know, an appeal was going to happen. There's new body cam footage that has come out from police of the arrest. Let's take a listen to a piece of that body cam footage that people are having conversations about right now. It was announced today that Carmelo Anthony has a all star dynamic legal appeal team, appeals team, as he goes into, you know, setting up his appeal. He's currently behind bars, sentenced to 35 years for the stabbing death of Austin Metcalfe, who was the other teen boy at the track meet that day that, you know, he got into the dispute with. And it's a sad situation on both sides. It really is. But Carmelo Anthony is trying to appeal and, and I believe that he should. I think that there were some things, and we've talked about it here on the podcast in previous episodes, I believe there were some things in trial that were not done the best way to, you know, provide his defense. And the ladies on the View had a really interesting conversation about, you know, at the end of the day, right. Like, if the, if. If self defense was considered in the way that we want it to be, what would have been an appropriate sentencing? Because, I mean, someone did die, so.
Brown Girl Grinding Founder
Right.
Lauren LaRosa
So someone. So Carmelo Anthony will have to, you know, face the consequences for that. And I don't think anybody is arguing that. I think what people are arguing is that they want things to be fair, they want things to be consistent. They want, you know, that's it. Right. What would that look like? Take a look. Let's take a listen to their conversation. Now, me and Charlamagne were not a part of this conversation. This was actually before we came onto the View. But let's take a listen to what the ladies on the View had to say about that.
The View Host
This is. This has been an issue for such a long time in the judicial system where prosecutors use what are called, you know, batson challenges, and they explain what that is. It's a challenge that is used to strike a juror, generally a juror of color, for a race neutral reason.
Charlamagne Tha God
Right.
The View Host
Cause you're not supposed to. You're supposed to have a jury of your peers and. And you're not supposed to just strike someone because they're black. And in this case, they gave the reasoning that they're educators and this happened. These were high school students and this happened at a school track meet. So they couldn't be impartial because of that. I don't think that's an appropriate reason. It would be the best ones, too. Yeah, I don't think it's an appropriate reason to strike black jurors, especially when it's a young black teenager on trial, and especially when that particular area is made up of 10% of an African American community. So I don't think he got a jury of his peers. So I think on appeal there is a legitimate thing, a legitimate reason. I also think we have to look at self defense here because there seems to be two systems of justice at play in this country, and there have been for a very long time. I was part of the system, so I understand that and I believe that to be true in this case. This young man, you heard him say he put his hands on me, and I told him not to. This the kid that died, and I have so much empathy for him and his family's loss. That kid was 200 pounds. This kid was 130 pounds. And the other kid was also taller than he is he was the only black kid under the tent. And the victim here had his twin brother with him, who was also a very large person. If that. If you don't fear for your life, if you weigh 130 pounds, I weigh 130 pounds facing somebody that's 200 pounds, I would be terrified of that. I don't understand why self defense was rejected by this jury.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. And I think, you know, that that is going to be the interesting thing with this new appeals team. Right. Like, it's where, where do we go from here? So, you know, the new appeals team is consistent of the NAACP president, Gary Bless. Blesso. I'm probably saying that wrong. I'm so sorry. A veteran appellate attorney, Russell Wilson ii, civil rights attorney, Brooke Cluse. I know Ben Crump is kind of like loosely in the mix of this as well too. I was told that some of these attorneys are working pro bono. And, you know, the focus of this is going to be, you know, were there errors that occurred during the proceedings. And this all star legal team plans to raise any issues that it believes could support overturning the conviction. So they're, you know, taking a first look at the case and going to try and figure that out. And I'm very interested to see where all this lands. You know what I mean? It's kind of difficult to talk about because it's like you have this young man who is behind bars facing 35 years, which is a lifetime. Right. And then you have another young man who lost his life, and there's conversations about self defense, and we don't fully know. Like, we, we've heard things through court, but I feel like things we don't. We weren't fully given the full picture throughout the court proceedings. And I do think that self defense should have been considered way more in this. So those are things that we're gonna have to think about as we move forward in this. It's just so sad to see because these are, these are, these are people's kids, these people's babies. I saw a video over the weekend of Wiz Khalifa talking to his son. And I was like, you know, the scariest thing about me preparing to become a parent, and even with my niece, my knee. I told you guys, my niece was here with me last week for about a week. The scariest thing is, like, you raise these babies up and then you give them to the world and you can't control the things that they come across a lot of the time. Wiz Khalifa's son called him about facing a bully in school. And there has been conversation about whether Carmelo Anthony was defending himself from what he felt like was aggression or, you know, something that people would even call bullying or, you know, a bullying tactics to try and remove him from under a tent. And these are things that were. That are going to be re explored as the appeal goes on. But I thought that the way Wiz Khalifa had the conversation with his son around this, knowing what, you know is happening in the world right now, I thought that it was, it was a really good parent moment. Let's take a listen.
Lauren's Friend/Advisor
And that's not always a reason to fight. Sometimes people are going to talk and sometimes y' all gonna go back to and forth. But that don't mean you got to use your hands. All right?
Lauren LaRosa
I'm not going to resort to that like immediately. If he, I, I told everybody is if he puts his hands on me first, I'm, I, I'm going to. But like, if I'm not going to put my hands on him first, I'm just not going to do that. Cuz I'm not like that.
Lauren's Friend/Advisor
I know you're not. I know you're not. And thank you for calling me.
Lauren LaRosa
He's like an aggressive person, so I know he's going to try to fight me. And if he tries to fight me, I'm to going, I don't even care.
Lauren's Friend/Advisor
You already heard what I said about de. Escalating this situation, right?
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, well, I tried. He still wants to fight me.
Lauren's Friend/Advisor
Well, we on, we on that. All right? Yeah. Okay. Well, thank you for calling me and letting me know, but I really don't want you to be getting into no rumbles like that, especially just out in the streets and just like randomly like that. Because you, you, you never know, man. Like, it could go so many different types of ways. So that's, you know, I'm all, I'm all about like, protecting yourself and a little scrap ain't nothing. But if it's, if it's something you can avoid, just do your best, all right? Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
I mean, again, this is one of those things where we just got the. When it comes to Carmelo Anthony's case for the stabbing death of Austin Metcalf, we're gonna have to watch how this appeal turns out. What I think, and this is me removing my like, factual hat.
Brown Girl Grinding Founder
Right.
Lauren LaRosa
Where I think the, the appellate team should go is I think that they definitely need to do a lot better at painting Carmelo Anthony as a person. I feel like the prosecution in the lower courts that convicted him, did a really good job of making him out to be a monster. And when you listen to that video, the, you know, the security footage, there's another part of security footage too, where he's talking about the fact that he was defending himself against Austin, who he alleged put his hands on him. Let's take a listen to that memorial tent over there, guys.
Karen and Georgia from My Favorite Murder
All right.
Lauren LaRosa
He put his hands on me. I told him nothing.

And Shopify's AI co founder, sidekick, game changer, let me tell y', all, right? So it's helped me not only optimize my site, it helps me look at my sales trends, it updates my product skills, all the stuff I'm absolutely not an expert in. But it's like having a genius business partner that never sleeps. And right now The Bronco grinding storefront and the Black Effect storefront is busy and Shopify is handling all of the heavy lifting. I love that for us. I am pumped, like so pumped that Shopify is going to show up at the Black Effect Podcast Festival this year in a big way and I will be there preaching this platform to all of the small black owned businesses that partner with us. So if you've been sitting on an idea or if you're ready to scale, which you've already started, this is your sign. Go to shopify.com Ben if I can

Goodbye. When you listen to stuff like that, it's like these were two young kids that were just in the moment. Carmelo Anthony is obviously in fear. You can hear it in his voice. And I don't, I don't think that his legal team on a lower level did a good job of painting that picture at all. So I think that that's where the appellate team should focus a lot of their time and attention to. I think, you know, there was a lot of conversation about the fact that the knife was involved and it was a stabbing. I think, you know, more conversation about the, the weapon itself and what it was versus how it was portrayed prior to. Like, I just think that before everything was made to be this, like, vicious attack where it's like, you know, you never want a kid to lose their life. And that's why this is hard to talk about, because it's like, you don't want to go against the fact that you never want a kid to lose their life. You never want anyone to lose their life. You never want a parent to have to bury their child.
Karen and Georgia from My Favorite Murder
And
Lauren LaRosa
those are all things to be considered. But when people had conversations around the, the knife that Carmel Anthony had on him, it wasn't made clear that it was, you know, it was a pocket knife, that it wasn't illegal for him to have. That is something that people care for protection all the time. Now I, I've heard testimony during the, the lower level court situation where they had a conversation about whether that was needed or not. Like, why would you need to take that to attract me? But I also think the appellate team needs to really, really help the jury understand or, or the, the panel of judges and at the appeals, you know, part of this understand or just be a little bit empathetic too. However they can do that. The fact that this is a young black boy. So the fears are a little bit different when you walking out into the world every day. And that. And that matters in this widely. And I don't think that that was done well either. So, you know, we'll, we'll look, you know, to see what happens in this. We'll keep up with it. We'll be talking about it here on the latest with Lauren the Rosa the podcast and let me know your thoughts. I'm Lauren LaRosa. Everywhere L O R E N L O R O S A Let me know your thoughts. This is an iHeart podcast, Guaranteed Human.
Date: June 23, 2026
Host(s): Lauren LaRosa, Charlamagne Tha God, Brown Girl Grinding Founder
Special Segment: "The Latest With Lauren LaRosa"
Theme: Reflections on recent career milestones, a key discussion on Carmelo Anthony’s legal appeal, and insights on personal growth and faith.
This episode of The Breakfast Club centers on Lauren LaRosa recounting her milestone appearance (alongside Charlamagne Tha God) on ABC’s "The View." The conversation touches on her emotions and gratitude, then pivots to a timely, sensitive discussion about the Carmelo Anthony legal appeal, personal responsibility, and justice. Throughout, Lauren radiates gratitude, humility, and a sense of mission, while offering listeners personal and professional takeaways.
Excitement and Nerves:
Lauren shares her initial nerves and gratitude about joining The View with Charlamagne, describing the surreal feeling of achieving a long-time dream and the unplanned opportunities that have shaped her career.
“Some of the things that God be just, like, effortlessly throwing my way and the people that he is, like, putting in my life to, like, help me grow, help me maneuver...I just be like, yo, what? What. What is life right now?...This is a dream, and I'm literally living it in real life.” (04:36)
On The Knicks’ White House Visit Debate:
Lauren and Charlamagne discuss on The View whether the Knicks should visit the White House following their invitation from owner James Dolan.
Lauren: “I just...I don't see the why in it...I think when you start doing things like going to the White House and stuff like that, like, it gets. It divides people, and I think that we should continue to just be happy and in the glory of the win.” (06:09)
Charlamagne: “If it's a political reason why you don't want to go, let them know the reason. Right? ...Don't tell me that it's just a scheduling conflict, right? Give me the actual reason.” (06:29)
Casual, Behind-the-Scenes Banter:
The cast discusses playful back-and-forth, like “bald spots,” highlighting the familial energy of The Breakfast Club.
Lauren: “It's been amazing, though, because I feel like we're on air and we're on the radio and we get to do the segments, but then behind the scenes, I think people get to really see how we are in real life.” (07:34)
Lauren opens up about her faith, the importance of humility and posture, and how blessings come with responsibility.
“When God says he has things for you and when God promised you things, that's exactly what be happening. And I'm not mad at it at all. I am so grateful to God, to be receiving all of these blessings and to, to be able to talk about it, I think has been the biggest blessing.” (10:40)
She encourages listeners to check out The View episode and her behind-the-scenes vlog on Lauren LaRosa TV.
“I want to make sure that like I'm cleaning out my, my, my heart, my soul, my spirit...and I'm, I'm not too impressed by all the time and I know can be better...I'm a villain in somebody's story. I didn't hurt people, not physically. Well, not physically, but you know what I mean? Like everybody, like everybody come with their BS...But I'm really trying to do such a good job of like correcting things in real time now.” (11:13)
Lauren shifts to the high-profile Carmelo Anthony case, currently on appeal, breaking down key aspects and inviting empathy for all involved.
Context:
Anthony was sentenced to 35 years for the stabbing death of fellow teen Austin Metcalfe at a track meet. Controversy surrounds his defense, the fairness of his trial, and the handling of the self-defense claim.
Key Issues Discussed:
The View Host: “I don't think it's an appropriate reason to strike black jurors, especially when it's a young black teenager on trial...If you don't fear for your life, if you weigh 130 pounds facing somebody that's 200 pounds, I would be terrified of that. I don't understand why self defense was rejected.” (21:56)
Lauren: “I believe there were some things in trial that were not done the best way to, you know, provide his defense...” (19:15)
Advice for the Appeal Team:
Lauren urges the appeal team to humanize Carmelo Anthony and clarify the circumstances and intent, including the details about the pocketknife and the nuances of self-defense for young Black men.
“I think the appellate team needs to really, really help the jury understand...the fact that this is a young black boy. So the fears are a little bit different when you walking out into the world every day. And that. And that matters in this widely. And I don't think that that was done well either.” (32:00)
Parental Fears & Teaching Non-Violence:
Lauren references a Wiz Khalifa clip discussing talking to his son about bullies and nonviolent conflict resolution, paralleling the lessons with the realities young people face today.
“You raise these babies up and then you give them to the world and you can't control the things that they come across a lot of the time.” (24:19)
“I'm all about like, protecting yourself...But if it's, if it's something you can avoid, just do your best, all right?” (25:47)
Multiple shoutouts to Shopify and the Black Effect Podcast Festival, underlining the importance of platforms that empower Black business owners.
Charlamagne Tha God: “Shopify is helping drive the marketplace this year at our festival and their footprint and commitment to us and and the community of black owned businesses is something I am proud to be a part of.” (01:16)
“Shopify gets my products everywhere. I'm able to link stuff through Google, YouTube, TikTok, Shop, the Shop app, even ChatGPT and Instagram, which is very important for me.” (15:08, 28:55)
