DJ Envy
Good morning. That's right. Back to the work week. Oh, man. I want to say salute to everybody that I ran. Me and the wife, we were married 25 years last Wednesday, man.
Charlamagne Tha God
Congratulations.
DJ Envy
So that was our anniversary. So we went to.
Charlamagne Tha God
What'd you call it?
DJ Envy
You say a silver anniversary?
Charlamagne Tha God
Silver.
DJ Envy
Silver, yeah. When you marry 25 years of silver. Gold is 50, platinum is 35.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm talking about what your hair color was before you put all that black dye in it. Cause it was crazy to smoke.
DJ Envy
It's silver, but thank you. Yeah. So we went out to Puerto Morales, which is in Mexico. Salute to Ro Marley, which is Bob Marley's son. Of course, he has a resort out there. So we went out there and we just detached.
Charlamagne Tha God
So y' all had a baycation?
DJ Envy
Yeah, that's it. Just me and the wife. Just do nothing but just go to the beach every day, just get massages every day, have amazing food and just relax. We didn't do nothing.
Charlamagne Tha God
Vacations are very important when you got kids, man. I know it was y' all anniversary, but even outside of the anniversary, when you have kids, vacations are very important. Oh, my gosh.
DJ Envy
You and your wife just get away. Just. Just not having anybody run into the room because they're beefing and fighting. Not everybody. Anybody jumping into the bed. Not having to take anybody to activities, pick anybody up from school. It was just me and the wife just relaxing. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. We got back late last night. Oh, my gosh. Such an amazing time. So salute to everybody I've seen out in Puerto, more or less. I did see a bunch of people out there because we went to get some. We went to a couple of restaurants, we ate, and just want to say salute to everybody that I ran into. We had such an amazing time. And I just love to tat sometimes.
Charlamagne Tha God
Absolutely.
DJ Envy
Just not on the phone, not on the email, not on the text. She couldn't call. It was just straight up relationship. Just loving on my wife. My wife loving on me.
Charlamagne Tha God
So you need to detach from Just for Men too, though. Cause you used way too much this morning.
DJ Envy
Yo, shut up, man.
Charlamagne Tha God
Am I lying, Red? This crazy. Shut up, man. That looks like it's in high definition.
DJ Envy
That's because I have a tan and
Charlamagne Tha God
it pops up a little more.
DJ Envy
It's the same. The same as always.
Charlamagne Tha God
I don't know about that.
DJ Envy
It's the same as always.
Charlamagne Tha God
It kinda looks like your follicles got a tinge.
DJ Envy
Yo, shut up.
Charlamagne Tha God
Follicles look darker. You don't.
DJ Envy
It's the same as always. And salute to Joseph and the Fives Residences. That really took care of me out there. So appreciate you guys. Let's get the show cracking. Lamorne Morris will be joining us today.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yes, man. My guy, Lamorne Morris, he is. He's starring in a new TV series or two, New Marvel television series called Spider Noir on Amazon Prime. But you know Lamorne from the new guy. Lamorne's been in all types of stuff, man. You know what's funny is LaMorne started at BET. I don't know if people remember that. No, I don't remember when BET had the whole New Faces campaign and it was. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Roxy, it was Terrence, Terrence J. And Alicia, Renee and Lamorne. Like, they all started together at bet, but, you know, Lamorne is a star now.
DJ Envy
That's right. They all stars.
Charlamagne Tha God
They all stars. Yes, yes, yes, yes.
DJ Envy
I forgot. I'm thinking about it now. I'm going back in.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
DJ Envy
Definitely was a new face.
Charlamagne Tha God
Like the. He was like the new hits on the street for us.
DJ Envy
Yes.
Lamorne Morris
He was only.
Charlamagne Tha God
He was only there for, like a
DJ Envy
short period of time.
Charlamagne Tha God
Maybe maybe two years.
Lamorne Morris
Maybe.
Charlamagne Tha God
Maybe because it was like, you know, Roxy and Terence had 106. And like Alicia and Lamont, they just, you know, used to basically, like, do the man where they fit in.
DJ Envy
Yeah, absolutely.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
Okay.
DJ Envy
All right, well, let's get the show cracking. What are we starting off with?
Charlamagne Tha God
I have no idea.
Lauren LaRosa
Drake.
Charlamagne Tha God
Okay, the radio can play Drake now.
DJ Envy
Why can't we?
Charlamagne Tha God
I don't know. I thought he said he was blackballed. He said he. Even though he never, never left rotation over the last.
DJ Envy
Yeah, he's always had a huge record.
Charlamagne Tha God
He was always getting played 10 times an hour, you know, every hour for the last two years. But according to him, he was blackballed.
DJ Envy
You like the album, didn't you?
Charlamagne Tha God
No.
DJ Envy
Liar. It's the Breakfast Club.
Charlamagne Tha God
Come on.
DJ Envy
Morning, everybody. It's DJ Envy. Just hilarious. Charlemagne, the guy. We are the Breakfast Club. Let's get in some front page news.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know, you asked me did I like the Drake album, and I said, no, no, I'm just indifferent. Because what I realized this weekend is Drake is a mood. He's a mood that I've never been in.
DJ Envy
Okay, what mood is that? What?
Charlamagne Tha God
Drake. Drake is a mood. There's only a couple of artists, you know, ever that you can say are moods. Like sad day is a mood.
DJ Envy
Yes.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know, Erykah Badu is a mood.
DJ Envy
But Drake has different moves though.
Charlamagne Tha God
Well, whatever Mood summers up tempo.
DJ Envy
Some is party, some is relaxed, some is chill.
Charlamagne Tha God
I've never been in Drake mood.
Jess Alaris
He's a multi mood dude.
Charlamagne Tha God
I've never been in the mood. Okay. For Drake. Okay. That's just.
DJ Envy
He's spitting. He rapping on the album though.
Charlamagne Tha God
Definitely.
Jess Alaris
You listen to all three of them?
DJ Envy
Yes.
Charlamagne Tha God
No.
Jess Alaris
You listen to Habibt?
DJ Envy
Yeah, I listen to the. To everything. I didn't have nothing to do but just relax and listen. I took a four hour flight, so I did get.
Charlamagne Tha God
Listen, you was on vacation listening to Drake on the.
DJ Envy
On the flight back here.
Charlamagne Tha God
Jesus Christ. You look all refreshed.
Lauren LaRosa
That's what's up, baby.
Charlamagne Tha God
Thank you. I look nice, man. That's it.
DJ Envy
Well, let's get into some front page news. Last night the Cavaliers beat the Pistons 125, 94.
Charlamagne Tha God
Sorry, Detroit.
DJ Envy
Yeah, Detroit's up out of here. And congratulations to Shy Alexander. He won the second straight NBA MVP award. So congratulations to him.
Charlamagne Tha God
Sounds about right to me.
DJ Envy
Tonight OKC takes on the spurs and tomorrow the Knicks take on the Cavaliers.
Lamorne Morris
What's up?
Charlamagne Tha God
Tonight is the actual NBA championship. Whoever wins the Spurs OKC Western Conference Finals will probably win the championship.
DJ Envy
I doubt it, but. Good morning.
Mimi Brown
Good morning, Envy. How you doing?
DJ Envy
I'm doing good.
Caller/Listener
Good.
Mimi Brown
You were missed last week. Charlemagne, Jess, how y' all doing? Good morning. Okay, so we start this morning in Montgomery, Alabama, where thousands of people from across the country, they gathered over the weekend for a major voting rights rally following the Supreme Court's decision that we' been talking about that weakens parts of the Voting Rights Act. So the event was called All Roads Lead to the South. And organizers say this was not just a march, it was the beginning of a larger political mobilization heading into the midterms. Let's listen to Congresswoman Terry Sewell. She represents Alabama's largest majority Black Congressional District 8.
Jess Alaris
Like Alabama, that is more than 28% African American voters.
Lauren LaRosa
And there are seven seats in Congress. We deserve more than zero or one.
Jess Alaris
We deserve two seats. Can I hear it? Two seats in Alabama. And we will accept nothing less.
Lauren LaRosa
But we have seen before all of this, before the efforts by which these
Jess Alaris
extremists are trying to take us back. The people of Alabama know better than anyone that democracy is under attack.
Lauren LaRosa
And when we see democracy under attack, we organize, we mobilize, and we fight back.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's what we do.
Mimi Brown
So the day actually started in Selma where participants held a prayer service before walking silently across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. That's the site of Bloody Sunday back in 1965. And throughout the day, speakers warned that voting rights rights protections, they were being steadily rolled back. And they urged people not to just protest, but to also organize and to also vote. Here's Senator Cory Booker and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.
Caller/Listener
This is one of those moments where we understand that our blessings come with obligation. There is no liberation without obligation. Because if we in our generation do not now do our duty, we will lose the gains and the rights and the liberties that our ancestors afforded us.
Lauren LaRosa
They think they can draw us out of power.
Caller/Listener
They do not know the sleeping giant
Lauren LaRosa
that they just awakened.
Mimi Brown
Now, Saturday's rally, it comes after the Supreme Court's Louisiana versus decision. That's the ruling that triggered the new wave of redistricting across the South. And following that decision, several Republican led states, they moved quickly to withdraw congressional maps in ways that critics, critics say and it does weaken black voting power. Tennessee and Florida, they have already approved new maps. While Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Mississippi are now facing growing redistricting fights. Senator Senator Raphael Warnock, Congressman Congresswoman ayanna Pressley and Reverend Dr. Bernice King, they were also there among the national voices that took the stage. Now, organizers say this was just only the kickoff. More rallies, more voter registration drives and organizing events are already planned through the summer into November. And for more information, organizers are asking people to go to Allroads.
Charlamagne Tha God
Leadtothesouth.com you know, I wonder what's the messaging here? Because we know that they weaken black voting power with these redistricting, redistricting efforts. But how do you let black people know their vote, you know, still matters? Because I would think that, you know, you know, this messaging that's current you're currently hearing would create a lot of voter apathy. If people feel like, oh, my vote, you know, it does not gonna matter in the midterms. Like how do you simultaneously tell people, yes, your votes were weakened, you know, because of these redistricting, redistricting efforts, but your vote still matters and you need to vote in the midterms.
Mimi Brown
Yeah, I think because what they're trying to say is they're counting on people, which, you know, they always say this, but this time for real, they're counting on people not to vote. And if everyone does show up to vote, they can counteract some of what's going on. They were giving statistics where they're or large majority of people in the south in certain states, especially I believe in Tennessee who don't go out to vote. And the answer to the backlash. The answer to the redistricting is for every single person who has the ability to vote to come out and do so. And they say that that is the way that they can fight back against some of this. Yeah. And really, really quickly, you know, we've had those government shutdowns, and it just Congress, they may finally be putting themselves on the same payment schedule as the rest of America. So the they just approved a new rule that would temporarily stop senators from getting paid when the government shuts down if Congress fails to pass a budget and parts of the government closes. And senators would now have their paychecks frozen, too, during that shutdown period. Now, that rule will not take not take place until after the midterm elections. But supporters are calling this accountability.
Charlamagne Tha God
Good. Because, you know, these elected officials are government workers, too. So, you know, it shouldn't just be the TSA agents and, you know, other government workers like that who get impacted when the government shuts down. They shouldn't get no paycheck either.
DJ Envy
Or not only that, Go on vacation when other people can't get paid. Like that makes no sense. I'm going on vacation for two weeks, and y' all can't get paid. Y' all got to figure it out till I get back. Now, that sound.
Charlamagne Tha God
But the other sad part is so many of them getting so much money under the table, they wouldn't even care nowhere.
Mimi Brown
And they're not living paycheck to paycheck.
Charlamagne Tha God
No.
DJ Envy
That's right.
Mimi Brown
So there's that, too. All right, y'.
Jess Alaris
All.
Mimi Brown
Well, coming up at 7, AI is no longer just helping with homework and emails. It's now. It now wants to help manage your finances. We'll get into that in the next hour.
DJ Envy
All right, everybody else, get it off your chest. 800-585-1051. If you need the vent, phone lines are wide open. Call us up. Right now, it's the Breakfast Club. Good morning.
Charlamagne Tha God
This is your time to get it off your chest, Whether you're mad or blessed. I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk I hate the way that you dress. Everything with me is blessed.
DJ Envy
Call up next, 800-585-1051.
Charlamagne Tha God
Not just me, I'm with the culture.
Lamorne Morris
Philly.
Charlamagne Tha God
Hello, this yo, Smooth jazz from the port. What up, Breakfast Club?
DJ Envy
Get it off your chest.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, man, I wanted to talk about this Drake album. Now, I'm gonna first off by starting by saying I'm not a Drake fan, but I like good hip hop, I like good music. And from what I got from the three albums is that he pretty much gave three different stages of him. And like, I'm, I've always said I like so Far Gone Drake. You feel me? Anything after that, I ain't really too much of a fan of him. He got some hits here and there and stuff. But the only thing I really liked about, you know, these three albums is the club bangers that he had on that last, that last, this last few weeks. That Cheetah print is funny as hell. It's one of my favorite ones, though. I ain't gonna lie. Can I ask you a question? You got any homeboys that rap? That rap?
DJ Envy
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, for sure. I bet you don't listen to none of their music, but you listen to three Drake albums this weekend, I bet you whenever they send you something, you'll be like, man, I ain't got time for it. You know what? I'm shout out to my dog, Bamboo Body. He got good music out. Okay, okay. Bamboo Body. He from, he from, from Baltimore, I believe. But he grew up in, he grew up, he grew up in the port, yo. He grew up in the port city. Wilmington, North Carolina. You know, I mean, we all stand on that. For real. But it's a lot of, it's a lot of homies.
Caller/Listener
4, 4.
Charlamagne Tha God
Go local. He from the port city. I listen to his music too. I mean, like, I, I, I support. For real. I hope so. Because it's a lot of y' all out there that listen to three Drake albums this weekend, but won't never listen to one song your homeboy sent you.
DJ Envy
Why?
Charlamagne Tha God
Why I gotta be that?
DJ Envy
Like, if, if, if Kendrick got that, he would be like, yo, why you listening?
Charlamagne Tha God
He dropped three albums.
Jess Alaris
He would have all. Dissected all of them.
Charlamagne Tha God
I listen to one Drake album.
DJ Envy
There's a lot of Drake fans.
Charlamagne Tha God
I would listen to three Kendrick albums if he dropped. I don't have that kind of time.
DJ Envy
There's a lot of Drake fans out there. Like when Chris Brown dropped that double album was like 36, 37.
Charlamagne Tha God
He just week and you still ain't get through all of it.
Jess Alaris
I am, I am because I'm still listening to the 45 track albums, the two ones before that he dropped. So.
DJ Envy
Yeah, but there's a lot of Drake fans out there. Like, you don't think OVO Eli up here didn't listen?
Jess Alaris
He probably know every song on every.
Charlamagne Tha God
He don't have no kids.
Jess Alaris
Yeah, he did. He went to Toronto.
Charlamagne Tha God
Young man with really no life.
DJ Envy
Damn.
Charlamagne Tha God
Drake is his life. His Instagram Page is O. Eli. He has no life.
DJ Envy
Did he get back from Toronto yet? I don't know.
Jess Alaris
But he met Drake, though.
DJ Envy
He did meet Drake?
Jess Alaris
Yes, he did.
Charlamagne Tha God
We don't know that for sure.
Jess Alaris
He told us. He wouldn't lie.
Charlamagne Tha God
He actually didn't tell us anything yet. He didn't tell us that. Somebody told me that, and I told y'. All.
Jess Alaris
No, somebody. You ain't tell me that.
Charlamagne Tha God
I did tell you that last week. I read you the text verbatim. Crazy girl.
DJ Envy
I wonder what he said to Drake. I wonder what happened. Like, no. Anyway, get it off your chest. 800-585-1051. If you need the vent, hit us up now. It's the Breakfast Club.
Charlamagne Tha God
Good morning.
DJ Envy
Wake up, wake up.
Charlamagne Tha God
This is your time to get it off your chest, man. Or blessed. We want to hear from you on the Breakfast Club. Hello.
DJ Envy
Who this?
Charlamagne Tha God
This is Dre.
Caller/Listener
Good morning.
Charlamagne Tha God
Breakfast Club family Dre.
Caller/Listener
How y' all doing this morning?
Charlamagne Tha God
Good. Black and highly favored. How are you? I am great.
Caller/Listener
I am great. I called a few weeks ago because I couldn't get through for over a decade, and so far, I've been able to get through at least three times since.
Charlamagne Tha God
Okay.
Caller/Listener
But I wanted to call y' all
Charlamagne Tha God
out a little bit.
Caller/Listener
Y' all keep saying shy for Shay Gilders, Alexandra, the MVP in the NBA.
DJ Envy
Yes.
Caller/Listener
Y' all say shy all the time, but it's. Hey.
Charlamagne Tha God
Like shea butter.
DJ Envy
Okay, well, thank you, brother.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah. Yeah.
Caller/Listener
Just want to help y' all out a little bit, because y' all been doing it for a while now. She's doing amazing for the culture.
Charlamagne Tha God
Thank you, brother. Yeah. Yeah. SGA is Wednesday. That's your question real quick. Where you calling from?
Caller/Listener
I'm in Duval. I'm in Duval, but I'm from Chicago originally. I was in the Marine Corps, so I traveled all over the place.
Charlamagne Tha God
If Shay was from America, how big of a star would he be?
Caller/Listener
Oh, he'll be up there, like, put it like this. They've been trying to push Ant man recently, right?
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
Caller/Listener
Because he's American. Same thing with Cooper. Flag. Yeah, but now we're seeing Wimby take off. We see Shay. They talk about, you know, Giannis and everything, but they trying to push American. But we ain't got no stars that's taking off like that. They ain't took over. Put it like that.
Charlamagne Tha God
But what's crazy is even know that these guys are clearly the best players in the league because they're not from America. It don't hit the same. I don't know why. Imagine if. Yeah. Kansas. You know what I'm saying?
DJ Envy
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
But I also think imagine if Shade was from Newark.
DJ Envy
Yeah. But it's also from their city. Like, you know that area. Like, look, when LeBron, the whole Cleveland, the whole Ohio loves LeBron. Michael Jordan, you know where he's from, they love him.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah. The whole Toronto, love Shay.
DJ Envy
It don't feel the same.
Charlamagne Tha God
Because it's not American.
DJ Envy
Because it's not America.
Lamorne Morris
Right.
Charlamagne Tha God
If you're in a. It's something when you're an American born and bred NBA star that hit.
DJ Envy
But he's the best player in the league, hands down.
Charlamagne Tha God
I mean, all the best players in the league. Out of the country. Out of the country. Joker.
DJ Envy
Luka. Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Thanks for calling, sir. Hello?
DJ Envy
Who's this?
Caller/Listener
Hey, this is Dre. I just want to say thank you to you guys because I called back in, like, April to ask y' all if y' all can hook me up on my mommy and me sneaker ball. And everything was delivered perfectly. Everybody loved the gifts and the books that y' all sent. And also, I was gonna say, today is a bad bitch's birthday. So.
DJ Envy
Day.
Charlamagne Tha God
Happy born day. How old are you?
Caller/Listener
I'm turning 45.
Jess Alaris
Golden Age. Damn. What the hell? You're not going through menopause yet, right?
Charlamagne Tha God
Pre.
Caller/Listener
Parent. No, no, no, no, no, no, pre.
DJ Envy
He said, no, no, no, no, Pre.
Charlamagne Tha God
No pre.
DJ Envy
Well, enjoy your birthday.
Caller/Listener
Thank you, y'.
Charlamagne Tha God
All.
Caller/Listener
And also, I just want to bid you guys up because this year was kind of hectic for me. But, like, I read your book Charlamagne. I read your book DJ Envy, and I took all those mental notes that y' all put in those books, and I was like, yo, do this for yourself, Dre. Like, get up, get active. Do what you gotta do for yourself, because you only live once.
Charlamagne Tha God
Thank you very much.
Caller/Listener
But they really don't, so just do you. So thank you, y'.
Charlamagne Tha God
All. Well, have a great birthday, Dre. Happy born day. Enjoy your big 45, man.
Lauren LaRosa
Nice, girl.
Caller/Listener
Hey, thank y'. All.
Charlamagne Tha God
Have a great one. It's crazy because I had to sit here and think about it, like, damn, I didn't did that, but 45.
DJ Envy
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'll be 48 this year. That's right. Damn. Wow.
Jess Alaris
That's right.
DJ Envy
But we still. We still flourish and still feeling good.
Charlamagne Tha God
It really does get better.
DJ Envy
That's.
Charlamagne Tha God
It does. That's why when I be seeing so many young people, you know, dying early, I'm like, yo, y' all have no idea what y' all missed out on,
DJ Envy
you know, I even went back to see some of the legends when they passed. Like, when you really think about it, you know. You know what age Michael Jackson died?
Charlamagne Tha God
50 something.
DJ Envy
No, I think it was like 48. Let me see.
Charlamagne Tha God
No, he was in his 50s. He's like early 50s. Like 51. I would probably. Yeah, he was 50. It was 50. Exactly.
Caller/Listener
Wow.
DJ Envy
But that's young.
Charlamagne Tha God
That is very young. I'll be 40 in a couple. In a few weeks.
DJ Envy
A lot of these people pass out. Prince, too.
Lamorne Morris
Prince was.
DJ Envy
I think Prince was pretty young, too.
Charlamagne Tha God
I think Prince was early 50s.
DJ Envy
But anyway. What's up, Lauren?
Charlamagne Tha God
Ll cool, baby.
Lamorne Morris
What's up?
Lauren LaRosa
Okay.
Jess Alaris
Look at you.
Lamorne Morris
I know.
Jess Alaris
Don't he look refreshed and oily and everything?
Lauren LaRosa
Nick is seeing something.
DJ Envy
The mic wasn't up. What's up, Lauren?
Lauren LaRosa
Good morning, Envy.
Jess Alaris
Look at you.
Lauren LaRosa
Hey, Charlotte.
Caller/Listener
Good morning.
Charlamagne Tha God
Fat rolls out for the summer.
Lauren LaRosa
Shut up.
Charlamagne Tha God
I can't believe you've been in here talking about my rolls hanging out of your freaking velour.
Lauren LaRosa
First of all, it's 90 degrees today.
Jess Alaris
I either look like a Black and
Lauren LaRosa
Mile or a fat roll.
Charlamagne Tha God
Come on.
Lauren LaRosa
I actually. Whatever.
Charlamagne Tha God
When you open up the biscuit can,
Lauren LaRosa
I don't mind it. I'm happy for you. I'm actually like 140 now. Okay, okay. Shut up.
Charlamagne Tha God
40 on your waist.
Jess Alaris
All right.
Lauren LaRosa
I appreciate my happy weight.
DJ Envy
Okay, the ladies coming up.
Lauren LaRosa
We do. We got some Drake leftovers.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, okay.
Lauren LaRosa
Envy, you've been gone for a little bit, so Drake's dad had to come out and clear up some things. We're gonna talk about it in the latest.
DJ Envy

Today, that one call really started everything. And fast forward to now. It's springtime, the weather's breaking, people outside, vibes are Right again. Thank God. And it got me thinking. Who haven't you talked to in a minute? And you know, through all these years and all these conversations, AT&T has been there, connecting people in meaningful ways. This is more than a story of technological innovation. It's really a story about human connection. Real people, real moments and real relationships. So we celebrate over 150 years of connection. Let this be your reminder. Don't wait. Make that call. Send that text. Pull up on somebody you care about. Because at the end of the day, those connections, that's what really matters.

Lauren LaRosa
Hey, y', all, what's up? It's Lauren LaRosa. And I used to think that if something worked for everybody else, it should work for me too. So I was just layering products on, trying every routine I saw online, and my hair just stayed dry, undefined. And honestly, it was frustrating. It felt like I was doing everything right but getting no results. What I had to unlearn is that hair isn't one size fits all. Once I started focusing on my hair and what I actually needed, everything changed. My hair felt softer, stronger, and I finally started seeing real growth. That's why I love Baskin Lather. Their products are made specifically for textured hair, and you can feel the difference. The stimulating scalp and hair bomb keeps my hair hydrated without the heavy, greasy feel. And it helps reduce breakage while adding Shine and the hydrating hair mist. Oh, it's perfect for keeping my curls soft, detangled and refreshed, especially in protective styles. I have thick textured hair that leans very dry. So moisture and strength are everything for me and I've definitely seen an improvement in both even their before and after results. You can tell it's real growth and healthier hair and I love the fact that it's a black owned, family operated brand that started from a real need and real care. Explore viral bestsellers and products of healthier hair for all types from Baskin lather. Go to baskinlatherco.com and use code breakfast club for 20 off. DJ Envy
Good morning.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, I'm not dumbing myself down. I'm being myself. I'm the homegirl that knows a little bit about everything and everybody, the little
Mimi Brown
brown girls looking you and go.
Lauren LaRosa
I want to be like you.
Charlamagne Tha God
Take me through that.
Lauren LaRosa
Take me through there.
Charlamagne Tha God
The latest with Lauren on the Breakfast Club. LL Cool baby talk to me.
Lauren LaRosa
So we talked about Iceman and it's dropping at the end of last week, Friday. But since then there's been some conversation because in the opening of the album, Drake talks about his dad, Dennis Graham and having cancer. But they. TMZ caught Dennis out. Literally. I think it was like the night after. I think I know it was right after Iceman dropped. Let's take a listen to Dennis talking about his cancer.
Charlamagne Tha God
What's going on, Dennis? First of all, I want to say
Lauren LaRosa
hi to you and I'm concerned. I was listening to the lyrics. Iceman and Drake Rebel reveals that you are buttoning cancer.
Lamorne Morris
No, that was a while back.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm okay now. Could you reveal.
Lauren LaRosa
Well, what were you.
Charlamagne Tha God
If.
DJ Envy
If it's possible, if not, nothing.
Charlamagne Tha God
It was a lung cancer at first
DJ Envy
and fortunately I got a message that it disappeared.
Caller/Listener
So here I am.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. And. And so when TMZ had first shot this out on X, they literally like, it said like, he did not have cancer.
Caller/Listener
Yeah.
Jess Alaris
It's not a headline.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. So a lot of the outlets, I guess before listening to the actual video went and reported it that way. So then people were picking it up as if like Drake was just like capping just for the song. Right. So Dennis Graham then had to get on his Instagram, I'm Drake stat, and basically clear it up. And he called out the pop. The paparazzi that was speaking to him, but basically was saying, like, this is messed up for you to make this controversial. That's not what I said. So, yeah, that was.
DJ Envy
But it seemed like he didn't. He just seemed like. I heard Drake's album. He said, you had cancer. You okay? And he just explained it.
Lauren LaRosa
It wasn't the paparazzi's fault, in my opinion. It was the headline that followed after. But he know he has a relationship. Like, you hear him greet the paparazzi person. So I think he just, just, you know, when whoever he personally knew first.
Charlamagne Tha God
You also don't know how long ago Drake recorded that record. Yeah, when he recorded that record in the moment, he probably was battling with cancer. By the way, that's the best record on the album, if you ask me. Make them cry.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Very introspective after that, he did not even try to even touch that level anymore.
Jess Alaris
Okay.
DJ Envy
Baby's real personal on make him cry. But I, I what I got through so far, what I enjoyed so far. I like the fact that Drake is rapping and I see a lot of people saying, well, why is he talking
Charlamagne Tha God
about all this stuff? Right?
DJ Envy
You tell you we've been talking about it for, for years. Don't reply on Instagram, don't reply on social media, Reply to music, then replies the music. Why are you still talking about the stuff?
Charlamagne Tha God
It's been two and a half years, man. He should have been turning the page on this reply to music two years ago. But it's not like he hasn't been putting out music. It hasn't been putting out albums.
DJ Envy
Has he been put out solo albums? He hasn't done a solo album. He did the last album.
Charlamagne Tha God
That they got to you in this way. Kendrick got to him in a way that we haven't seen in a long time. Everybody heard his little waffle colored feelings,
DJ Envy
but maybe his feelings were hurt and it took a while to put it, to put his own album back out. And I ain't mad at it. I ain't mad at the shots he took of LeBron. I ain't mad at the shots he took at Khaled.
Jess Alaris
He got that. Man said it right.
DJ Envy
But that's my point. They were boys. They were hanging out. I'm not mad.
Charlamagne Tha God
Somebody told him to put a tattoo of another man on his ass, but
DJ Envy
that there's no tattoo on his ass.
Jess Alaris
No, I don't.
Charlamagne Tha God
You went to the tattoo parlor, got a tattoo of me, and now you mad cause I don't rock with you like that. Grew up together,
DJ Envy
they got a different relationship.
Lauren LaRosa
But you don't feel like the Kendrick stuff was like just A like that was one thing, a big thing, of course, but it was a lot going on. It seems like in that song, like he dealing with a lot of other things as well too. That sounds like a break. Like he's literally having like a mental break.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'll make them cry and be talking about the whole project.
DJ Envy
The whole project.
Lauren LaRosa
I'm talking about just the first song alone.
Charlamagne Tha God
I think that's the best record on the album. It's very introspective and he, like you said, he touched on a lot of things that have nothing to do with what we've been saying. And after that, he just did not do that anymore throughout the album.
Lauren LaRosa
Well, there's been a lot of records that they were mentioning that Drake broke over the weekend, including the song that we are discussing being listed as one of the top five most streamed rap songs in a single day on Spotify's history. And then, yeah, Spotify did something weird. So spot. They didn't. I guess they didn't mean to. They had to correct it. Spotify listed Iceman as the most streamed album of 2026 in a single day. And then they listed that Drake became the most streamed artist in a single day of 2026 so far. Then they had to go back and correct it and they had to apologize because he is not the most streamed. Iceman was not the most streamed album even though he is one of the most streamed artists. So they say. The initial stream review process was completed manually, resulting in streams from two different album tracks being combined. Drake continues to hold the record for most streamed artists an album in a single day in 2026. We apologize for the error and have implemented updated review procedures to prevent similar issues in the in the future. I don't know how like a Spotify makes a counting mistake like that.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, go ahead.
Jess Alaris
No, I'm just about those things.
Charlamagne Tha God
I wonder what Drake cares about more. Does he care more about, you know, screaming numbers or does he care about people saying the project is dope?
Lauren LaRosa
I think he cares about both. Yeah, because he posted old reviews of one of his old albums. I forget which album it was. And he was basically showing how people were talking bad about that album at the time and then it became one of his, like biggest albums. I'll go back and find.
Charlamagne Tha God
Because the screams don't change anything. And what I mean by that is I saw like a lot of the OV hoes posting about how, you know, this, whatever that song was screamed more than not like us. It don't matter because not like us Culturally was a huge record that put the nail in the coffin for that rap battle.
Jess Alaris
Right?
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, but I mean, so regardless of how many songs you got that scream more than Not Like Us, it still doesn't stop the impact or Not Like
DJ Envy
Us, but it's still a huge accomplishment that the fact that this record is streaming more than any record that any hip hop record. So it's still a huge accomplishment.
Charlamagne Tha God
Probably does care about both, but I. I have a. I personally feel like he cares more about the music as he should.
Lauren LaRosa
But I think right now, in this moment, because of what he's trying to, like, be up against, he's going to care about both.
Charlamagne Tha God
What is he up against?
Lauren LaRosa
He's up against people trying to act like he's not him. Like he doesn't care. People were having conversations as if Drake's career was over.
Charlamagne Tha God
Nobody ever said that. That's. That not true? No, that's not true.
Jess Alaris
You know, that's what all three of the albums spell. Him.
Caller/Listener
Him.
Charlamagne Tha God
I saw that on nobody. Nobody ever thought Drake was over.
Lauren LaRosa
Not sensible people.
Charlamagne Tha God
All he did was lose a rap battle.
DJ Envy
Yeah. That's all he did was nobo.
Charlamagne Tha God
We were saying that all he did was lose a rap battle. Yeah.
DJ Envy
And as he was losing the rap battle, a couple of months later, he's back to number one record with somebody else that he had. So Drake has always been on the
Lauren LaRosa
charts, but according to him, he's fighting back at the radio. And I thought that that was confusing.
Charlamagne Tha God
I told y' all already, man, Drake got beat up by one person. Woke up, looked in the mirror, saw his reflection and thought he got jumped. So he just started swinging.
DJ Envy
It wasn't just one person. A bunch of different artists jumped on his ass.
Charlamagne Tha God
None of them had had any impact on him.
DJ Envy
Except for Kendrick.
Jess Alaris
I agree with that.
Charlamagne Tha God
None of them. No, none of them had any impact. One man they did try kicked his ass.
Lauren LaRosa
LeBron made a little impact.
Charlamagne Tha God
I don't like talking. Hush stuff like that. That just derails the conversation.
Lauren LaRosa
That was the latest for the hour.
Charlamagne Tha God
Like, what are we talking about?
DJ Envy
I don't know.
Charlamagne Tha God
We talking about music.
Lauren LaRosa
He been in his feelings.
Charlamagne Tha God
Taylor Swift didn't do it.
Lauren LaRosa
I envy. Don't.
Jess Alaris
I'm sorry.
Charlamagne Tha God
Listen, I want to shout out Jinta Omasami.
DJ Envy
I know that's not the right name,
Charlamagne Tha God
but her mom's name is Yolanda and she wanted us to shout her daughter out because her daughter is 26 and graduated with her doctorate in pharmacy.
Jess Alaris
Nice.
DJ Envy
Congrats.
Charlamagne Tha God
She's a proud hbcu. Alumnus.
Lauren LaRosa
University of Tennessee.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, I don't think University of Tennessee is a hbcu, though.
Lamorne Morris
Is it?
Lauren LaRosa
That's what that car says.
Charlamagne Tha God
I don't know.
DJ Envy
I mean, if it says.
Charlamagne Tha God
It says lemoyne Owen College. So maybe she got. Maybe she got her Bachelor's from LeMoyne, but got her doctorate from University of Tennessee. That's what I'm thinking.
Jess Alaris
Congratulations.
Charlamagne Tha God
Congratulations. Yes. Yolanda, your mother wanted to give you a shout out.
Lamorne Morris
Salute to you, Jacinto.
DJ Envy
All right, now when we come back, we got front page news. Mimi will be joining us. It'll go anywhere, man. It's the Breakfast Club. Good morning. Morning, everybody. It's DJ Envy. Just hilarious Charlemagne, the guy. We are the Breakfast Club. Let's get back to some front page news. Salute to sga. I was calling him Shy. His name is Shay. He won his second straight NBA MVP award. Congratulations to him. Now, last night, the Cavaliers beat the Detroit Pistons 125, 94. So tonight, OKC takes on the spurs and the Pistons. Excuse me. The Cavaliers take on the Knicks tomorrow night. What's up, Mimi?
Mimi Brown
Good morning, Envy. Jess, Charlemagne. How y' all doing this morning?
Lamorne Morris
Good morning.
Mimi Brown
Good morning. So we start this hour with a conversation that's blowing up online involving Jake Paul Waka Flocka in a debate over blackface, comedy and history. So remember the Drew Ski skit that we were joking about that he did about a conservative white women in America? He never came out and said that it was Erica Kirk, but many people assumed that's who he was talking about. Well, Jake Paul said he thought the video was funny, but then argued that if Drew Ski can joke about white people, he should be able to wear blackface and joke about black people too. He said he called the video hilarious and said he was already reaching out to makeup artists to film a response in full on blackface. Well, a few days ago during a live stream, Waka Flocka tried to explain to him why white plate, white face and black face are not the same thing. Let's listen.
Caller/Listener
You don't even know the history behind
Charlamagne Tha God
it, behind the comments you made. It was just. It's not like I'm being serious. I want to educate you, bro, because
Caller/Listener
y' all ever some you making jokes
Charlamagne Tha God
about, but folks, Grandmama experienced that torture in it. You know what I'm saying, bro?
Caller/Listener
So ain't nobody experienced torture with no
Charlamagne Tha God
white face but a black face.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah, but I think, but again, we can like, we can go into like all of this. Like people are oppressed, different, you know, races all of this stuff, people should be able to make fun of it. Like, if I. If I'm Jewish, bro. And people should be able to make fun of that no matter what what happened or what people went through.
Charlamagne Tha God
You guys see how politics are?
DJ Envy
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
No, that's not politics.
DJ Envy
This.
Charlamagne Tha God
Education. This how I grew up. Like, when I made jokes, how he did it. The difference between him is I got punished for this. Like, hey, Walker, why you out here running your mouth doing, bro? This happened with this. You don't make fun of white, black, this. Because this, this.
Caller/Listener
They educated me.
Charlamagne Tha God
I seem serious because education is serious.
Jess Alaris
K. I definitely agree with Waka.
Charlamagne Tha God
Okay?
Jess Alaris
But like he said and like. Like he said, ain't nobody ever suffer from white face. Like, y' all never.
DJ Envy
Like, well, blackface was used to dehumanize black.
Jess Alaris
Exactly. That's what I'm saying.
DJ Envy
And mock black people. You know that. That's what it was done. White face.
Lauren LaRosa
Exactly.
Jess Alaris
There's no comparison to that, like, with white face.
DJ Envy
What?
Jess Alaris
Like, what are you talking about?
Charlamagne Tha God
Well, I like that Flocka is trying to educate Jake Paul, but, you know, Waka Flocka is a Trump supporter, and Donald Trump's policies have targeted and hurt black Americans. And one of the things that Donald Trump has done with his policies is an erasure of black history. So it's going to be a lot of people who don't know the history of blackface because, you know, Donald Trump is erasing black history, especially in schools and targeting, you know, African American museums, amongst other.
DJ Envy
But two things could be true, right? The fact that he does support Trump, we don't know the reason why he supports Trump. It could be a particular reason. But also what he's saying about blackface is true.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah. But what I'm saying is people like Donald Trump are erasing, of course, black history. So there's gonna be a lot of other people who don't know the history of blackface because of Donald Trump's policies.
Jess Alaris
So basically, Wyer will be teaching much more.
Mimi Brown
Well, to what Envy said in the beginning about mocking. You know, blackface is mocking black people, and white faces is. You know, it's not. Waka tried to make that point as well. And then Jay Paul, he pushed back, arguing that comedy should not have double standards. I think we have that clip as well.
Charlamagne Tha God
So basically, what I'm telling you is they got history behind it. Like, bro, like, real deal history, bro. Like, like, I'm seeing him because I did some Amsterdam when people made face.
Caller/Listener
I never knew what black face was.
Charlamagne Tha God
I went out the country.
Caller/Listener
And I watched people dress up with
Charlamagne Tha God
black faces on their face, but made me mad as Amsterdam because there was mocking.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah, I think. I think if they're mocking, then that's one thing. If it's like, comedy. That's why I love comedians, is because they can get away with, like, saying and making fun of anyone or anything. And that's where I said, I love drucy skit. And by the way, I'm a Republican and I'm white, and I think you should make fun of white Republicans who are too deep.
Charlamagne Tha God
What you're doing is gaining traction. Like, are you serious?
DJ Envy
Something.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm not doing it.
DJ Envy
You're all, boom.
Mimi Brown
So a lot of people online is the conversation is exactly what you guys are saying. One, that Walk is also a Trump supporter, and two, that Jake Paul, he completely missed the point that Walker was trying to. To explain to him, and he called it tone deaf. And they were saying that not every joke starts from the same historical context. So therefore it's. You can't look at the two the same.
Charlamagne Tha God
I get what Jake Paul was saying too, though. Yeah.
Lamorne Morris
You.
Charlamagne Tha God
You can make any joke you want to make, but my thing is you just have to deal with the consequences of it. You know, Do I think that there should be some things that are off limits? Sure. But, you know, some people are willing to take the risk. If you're willing to take the risk, deal with everything that comes with it. Whether it's, you know, you lose things financially, whether you get punched in the mouth, like, you know what I mean? Whether it's backlash on social media, whatever it is, you gotta deal with it.
Jess Alaris
Yeah, but I do like that they're having a conversation. I like that they're talking about it. You know, instead of sitting there beefing and going back and forth and throwing racial slurs or whatever. Like, I like that it's a conversation.
Charlamagne Tha God
I wonder if Waka Flocka would be open to that conversation in regards to his support for Trump. Like, if somebody sat down with him and somebody said, hey, man, you know, these are the reasons I don't think you should be supporting Donald Trump as a black person because of the policies that target and, and, and hurt black Americans. I wonder, would he be receptive to. To that?
DJ Envy
I think he would have to.
Charlamagne Tha God
Would he be. Would he be acting like Jake Paul was acting towards him?
DJ Envy
Nah, I think he would have to, especially his. His own community asking him a question about it. I think he would have him.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, that's a good question.
Mimi Brown
And switching gears really quickly. Tennessee school district has officially removed Alex Haley's RA roots from school library shell.
Jess Alaris
Okay, Mimi, she said that up too perfect. Like, okay,
Charlamagne Tha God
but no, but that's, that's the, that's the era we live in that is there.
Mimi Brown
And it goes. They go together, right? Because we're talking about historical context. And then here we go. We have like a classic being removed from library fairy shelves. But the reason is raising a lot of questions. So, you know, if you are unfamiliar, really quick. Roofs is considered one of the most important books in black American history. It tells the story of, you know, Alex Haley's enslaved ancestor, Kunta Kinte, and follows generations of his family through slavery and American racial history. The book won a Pulitzer plot prize and it became a groundbreaking series that many of us watched as we were growing up. So, but school officials, they say the ban was not about the overall history or the message of the book. They say that it was flagged for one paragraph of sexual actual content in chapter 84. But the district will not tell people what that chapter is. They will not publicly release the actual paragraph that led to the ban. So under Tennessee state law review committees, they're required to focus on whether specific passengers are age appropriate, not the overall historical education or the value of the book. So the district said that teachers can still teach about it, but kids can no longer check this book out in the school libraries anymore.
Charlamagne Tha God
And let the record show it is started because the Trump administration enacted a broad book ban across federally operated institutions. Started in the when, when they targeted, I think 500 titles in the Department of Defense. So they set the stage, they said they set the stage for stuff like this.
Mimi Brown
Yeah, for sure, for sure. So more of that to come and I think running out of time. So I will leave it there and. But so that is your front page news. I'm Mimi Brown. Follow me @mimi Brown TV. And for more, more stories, follow the
Charlamagne Tha God
Black Information Network and make sure you go subscribe to Mimi Brown's front page news podcast on the Black Effect I Heart radio podcast network, available everywhere you listen to podcasts, man. DJ Envy
And I also want to salute to everybody because I see the calls coming in. Everybody that has to take the Long Island Railroad to get to work, they are actually on strike. Long island Railroad takes 82 million people to New York City and around New York yearly. And they are actually on strike. So I just want to say there's a lot more listeners in the car today, people trying to get to work. So be safe out there. I mean, I think I heart sent out an email that says if you live in Long island affected, stay at home, work from home today. So really, a lot of people affected today.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
DJ Envy
All right, now when we come back, Lamorne Morris will be joining us.
Charlamagne Tha God
All right.
DJ Envy
You know him from Spider Noir. He was actually on bet. Charlamagne and myself were talking about. He was with the New Faces campaign
Charlamagne Tha God
at BET back in the day.
DJ Envy
Years and years and years and years ago. That's when they found Terence J. They found Roxy, Alicia, Renee. Alicia Renee. And he'll be joining us next.
Charlamagne Tha God
He's also an Emmy winning actor. He won an Emmy on I forgot what he went Emmy for. I forgot. But he was also on New Girl.
DJ Envy
That's right as well. All right, and we'll talk to him next. So don't move. It's the Breakfast Club. Good morning. Morning, everybody. It's DJ Envy. Just hilarious. Charlemagne, the guy. We are the Breakfast Club. Lauren Laros is here as well. We got a special guest in the building.
Charlamagne Tha God
He will be in the new series spider noir, coming May 25. Lamor, Lamorne Morris is here.
Lamorne Morris
Hey.
Charlamagne Tha God
Hey. Good morning.
Lamorne Morris
Good morning.
Charlamagne Tha God
How are you?
Lamorne Morris
I'm good.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm good. Every time I see you, man, I just feel close to you. Because we share a sister.
Lamorne Morris
Yes, we do. Alicia, she. She bailed on us today.
Charlamagne Tha God
I know she was here all week. I didn't. I was running around, so I ain't get a chance to see her, man.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
But she spends way more time with you now because she's on the west coast. Coast. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Lamorne Morris
And she says you abandoned her.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, I did not.
Lamorne Morris
I know. I'm just trying to start.
Charlamagne Tha God
How are you, though, my brother? Dude, I'm good.
Lamorne Morris
You know, it's funny, I used to tell people when people ask me that, I would just go old and tired. And then I started feeling old and tired. Everything started breaking down. And so now I'm like, I'm good. I'm great.
Charlamagne Tha God
What's kicking your ass more? Acting, fatherhood, or just life in general?
Lamorne Morris
Trying to try to balance it? To be honest with you, before I had a kid, I was just free. You know what I mean? Like, I could. Oh, you got a job in. In Africa. Let's go do it. You know what I mean? You got a job over here. Let's go do it now. You got to really Pay attention to, you know, time spent with your kid. You still got to make money. You still got to work. So if I could bring her with me, you know, that, that. But that's a stressful situation, trying to handle the logistics of that. You know, she's only five, so, you know, I would say that. That work. Fatherhood, you know, I'm a single dad, so that balance is kind of. It's kind of crazy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm noticing gray hairs everywhere.
Charlamagne Tha God
It's interesting with you, right, because you. You definitely a comedian, Right. So you built a career where people expect you to be funny, but, yeah, your dramatic work is equally as good. Hey. Right.
Lamorne Morris
I don't think they heard you when you said it.
Jess Alaris
You got range, brother.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
Lamorne Morris
I feel like I don't get the respect.
Charlamagne Tha God
Do you find yourself leaning in one direction?
Lamorne Morris
No. You know what's cool is that I. I like the. As actors and performers, we like to think that we can do everything. You know what I mean? But it's very rare that you get the opportunity to do it. So for years, you know, I was on comedies and stuff like that and getting that recognition, but I'm an actor, you know, so I can play whatever. Whatever is written, and I could play it honestly and truthfully. When Fargo came around, I won an Emmy for it.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's right.
Lamorne Morris
And people were like, what?
Charlamagne Tha God
What?
Lamorne Morris
You know, I was like, yeah, we. We, as performers, if given the opportunity, can do. Who can do a lot of things. And so now with this show. The cool thing about this show is that, you know, I kind of get to do all of it. You know, there's moments where very passionate, very serious, but it's still a comic book franchise, so. And it's with Nick Cage, so you get to be silly. You get to. You call him Nick.
Charlamagne Tha God
Now it's not Nicholas like the rest of us.
DJ Envy
My Nick.
Charlamagne Tha God
Okay, Nick. Nick.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know, so I didn't even know that I called.
Lamorne Morris
I called him Nick Cage, too, I think, to Alicia, and she was like, oh, we all. We don't just call him Nick. We gotta call him Nicholas.
Charlamagne Tha God
Still, I never heard nobody refer to him as Nick in my life. Nick.
Lamorne Morris
That's my name.
Charlamagne Tha God
Nick. When you won the Emmy for Fargo, did that feel validating or did it make you realize, like, Hollywood only rewards black actors when they suffer in a
Lamorne Morris
role doing so crazy.
Charlamagne Tha God
Listen, I was thinking about it. I was thinking about it. I used to have this bit that
Lamorne Morris
it was like, if you want to win an Oscar, you gotta. You gotta be a Slave. And I started writing this. I started writing this movie that I stopped writing called the Porch.
Charlamagne Tha God
Porch.
Lamorne Morris
And it was one. It was like. It was about this actor who was trying to get respect, so he wrote a slave movie called the Porch about one. About one slave's uprising to become a house. And it was like, once he finally became a house, and everybody goes and sees the movie, and black people turn on me, you know, So I was gonna make that. I was gonna make that movie. But when I won the award, it did feel validating. It was just like, you know, Noah Hawley, the creator, he said something. He was like, usually when. When people win these big awards, they. It's because their role was big and glitzy, and they did a weird thing, and they had a lisp, and they did a thing. You know, he was like, the good guy won. He was like, just great acting. You followed the arc. You did the thing, and people appreciated it. You know, he was like, it's about time that that happened. Because a lot of those performances sometimes get overlooked because, you know, somebody got a stutter, you know, and somebody, like you said, is a slave, you know, and then. And then. But there are times where I do feel that way. It's like we do have to suffer in order to get that. To get that recognition. You know what I mean? Because if you look at our performances, like, for the most part, they're pretty damn great, and. And they don't get the. The recognition.
Caller/Listener
The point.
Charlamagne Tha God
Sounded like a great concept, didn't it?
Lamorne Morris
You want to produce it?
Caller/Listener
Sure.
Lamorne Morris
Y'.
Charlamagne Tha God
All.
Lamorne Morris
Richard, you doing it?
Lauren LaRosa
No, he's doing that.
Charlamagne Tha God
You don't get Illuminati rumors, though. Success as you've had, like, mainstream. You don't get the Illuminati room. But how have you avoided.
Lamorne Morris
I don't know.
Charlamagne Tha God
Why? Because I'd be sacrificing.
Lamorne Morris
No,
Charlamagne Tha God
Please.
Lamorne Morris
No. You know what's interesting is that I like the. The thing I like the most about my career is that I can.
Charlamagne Tha God
I've been.
Lamorne Morris
Like you said, I've been working for a long time, you know, and I do well for myself. Is I. But I can go.
Mimi Brown
Cool.
Lamorne Morris
I could go to the mall. You know what I mean? And just hang out and kick it. And then people will walk up and people will say, what's up? And people ask for photos. But it's not like. It ain't like the rock. You know what I mean? Like, it ain't that. That level of success.
Charlamagne Tha God
Why would you use the rock? Okay, okay.
Lamorne Morris
It ain't Like Brad Pitt. You know what I mean?
Lauren LaRosa
One more try. One more time.
Lamorne Morris
One more time.
DJ Envy
Yeah.
Lamorne Morris
It ain't like Oprah going to the mall.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know what I'm saying?
Lamorne Morris
Listen, I got.
Charlamagne Tha God
I feel good about myself today, but
Lamorne Morris
it's not like that. I have a steady career. I. I used to tell people all the time, I just want to be Morgan Freeman. I want to be in my 80s and 90s and still working.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, go.
Lamorne Morris
And not have to have, like, a burnout, you know what I mean? Because it's such high heights. That seems cool at times, but as long as the money's still good and I can still, you know, provide for my family. Family. I don't need that. I don't need to be Bieber. I don't need to be.
Charlamagne Tha God
You want longevity and consistency. Yeah, because I like.
Lamorne Morris
I like my piece. I like to be able to hang out with people and. And be able to take selfies and. And just. People just respect it and chill. I don't like the people.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, my God. Like, that's wild to me.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah. So, you know, when we're talking about
Lauren LaRosa
the dramatic roles, right, and you doing these various things, though, earlier you said that you still don't feel like you get the recognition for that. So if you could pick the recognition which would come with a lot of the. Oh, my God. Fame.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
And consistency, which one would you pick if you honestly had to make a choice?
Lamorne Morris
Well, see, that's tough because, you know, there are actors who I consider like goats that can do that, can go to the mall. I think Don Cheadle is top five best actors I've ever seen, and that's a skill that I want to be able to get to. I think everybody knows Don Cheadle, but his personality says, I'm good. You can come up to me and talk to me.
Charlamagne Tha God
Well, he.
Lamorne Morris
People aren't rabid about it.
Charlamagne Tha God
Right.
Lamorne Morris
That's what I. That's what I'm looking for. You know what I mean? But he gets that. He gets the accolade when he walks in the room. Everybody knows that's an actor. That's an. That's an artist, and they respect it. And you can't disrespect anything about his career. So that's kind of what I'm looking for.
Charlamagne Tha God
If that.
Lamorne Morris
Listen, if it comes with the craziness and chaos behind it, it.
Charlamagne Tha God
So be it.
Lamorne Morris
You can find ways to protect yourself from all that. You know what I mean? I just don't want to have to be guarded by bunch of Security guards all the time. And like, that just. That does. That doesn't feel healthy for. Yeah. You know what I mean? Like, because I'd be doing weird, and I don't need everybody to know about it.
Charlamagne Tha God
Like, what.
DJ Envy
What you mean?
Charlamagne Tha God
Like, what would you be doing?
Lauren LaRosa
What's the weirdest thing you be doing?
Lamorne Morris
What do you mean?
Jess Alaris
You already be doing weird, don't you?
Lamorne Morris
Yeah, yeah. I live a strange lifestyle, but nothing slippery like y' all be talking about. You do got to clarify.
Charlamagne Tha God
You get syndication checks.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah, yeah. I've been lucky, man. New Girl, like, New Girl was weird. It was like a show that almost didn't happen for me, but it ended up being the. The. The best thing that's happened in my career because it set me up to be in people's household so much that I. That I can work. You know what I mean? It's almost. It's. It is a little. A little validation of just being able to get you a job. But the dramatic stuff is what you. You know, you want a mixture of both.
Charlamagne Tha God
It's crazy that the climate of the country has changed so much that you probably couldn't get a show like New Girls right now. Yeah.
Lamorne Morris
Some of the stuff we talked about is kind of. You know, what the show used to be called?
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm just talking about the diverse. The diverse friendship.
Lamorne Morris
Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. We had. We had two black series regulars on the show. We had a Indian woman on the show.
Charlamagne Tha God
My.
Lamorne Morris
The type of guy I had. I dated, like, black women on the show, Asian women on the show. Like, Max. Max's character had. It was like. It was just like everything. Like, every. It didn't.
DJ Envy
It didn't.
Lamorne Morris
It was interesting. They didn't care. They were just like, oh, let's just. Even my character wasn't supposed to be black. Everybody was auditioning for it. Everybody. I mean, there was Asian cats in the room, Indian cats, Hispanic cats in the room. All. We were all sitting there auditioning, and it was. I mean, I tested against Xzibit at one point. You know what I mean?
Charlamagne Tha God
Rapper. They.
Lamorne Morris
Because they were. They were just trying to find it. They didn't know if they wanted, like, a bigger brother in the loft or if they wanted, like, a younger status. Like, they. They were trying to play with the dynamics, and so it ended up just happening, just going to me.
Charlamagne Tha God
Wow. Do you think shows like New Girls accidentally prepared America for, like, more diverse friendships?
Lamorne Morris
Probably. You know why? Because it's still around. Yeah. New Girl, we stopped taping in 2018, and people still think it's a new show. Show. And I think the reason, I think the reason why is because it translates across all generations. Everybody can identify. I think a lot of times when you see a TV show and it's just predominantly one particular race or one particular thing, it doesn't necessarily, it's not necessarily indicative of what's actually happening in our, in our world. You know, everybody's got diverse groups of friends. You know what I mean? It's just a matter of like, our networks are scared to show it, Are they scared to showcase it? That when you go to other countries, people are like, I love new girl. I love new girl. And you talk about it, they're like, I have a friend like you or, or my cousin is, is Jess or, you know, or we all live together. You know, the one thing we all can agree on is, is. Is community. You know what I mean? We all been broke and we all had roommates and everybody can identify with that. And I think that's why it's, that's why it has that longevity. You know what I mean? And I think that's why it can continue to go. People still, again, people still think we're taping. People are like, when's the new season coming out? I'm like, we about to be up. Bunch of old living together.
Jess Alaris
Do you believe that you have to do stand up to be a, A comedian?
Charlamagne Tha God
I think to have that, I think
Lamorne Morris
to pay respect to the comedians. You, you. Yeah, because I think there's so many great comedians that have kind of paved the way. Like that is their medium. If you're on stage telling jokes, that is your medium. Medium. Everything else is you're a comedic performer. Like, I, I do a little stand up, but I'm also, I'm a comedic writer and I came up in the improv scene, which is you on stage making stuff up from the top of your head or write comedy and write sketches and stuff like that. So I'm a comedic performer and I'm in the comedy business. But what they do is they're comedians, you know, or comics, if you, if you will. But the comedy business is big. Like, Will Ferrell is not a stand up comedian, but he's one of the greatest funny people of all time.
Charlamagne Tha God
Comedic actors, what they call him, right?
Lamorne Morris
Yeah, comedic. He's a comedic actor, you know what I mean? And when he walks in the room, people go, oh, it's gonna be funny. This is the same. But that's the same when you see like a Donnell Rawlings, you Know he's a comic. He's a comedian and a comedic performer. Yeah, shut up, yo.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yes, I know.
Jess Alaris
He is well known, household name chef. Hey, yo.
Lamorne Morris
Apparently he makes good gumbo.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's what the street say. That's what they say.
Lamorne Morris
I've never had it.
Lauren LaRosa
He do be cooking.
Lamorne Morris
I know he'd be cooking out of an rv.
Lauren LaRosa
He be telling jokes.
Lamorne Morris
He's. He's hilarious.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, you do got a food truck, but it's, it's like unlicensed.
Lamorne Morris
You got.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's why he. That's the rv. No, for real. He got an RV in Ohio. Yeah. And he cooks out of the RV in Ohio.
Lamorne Morris
I know. I was in Ohio in Yellow Springs, and he was offering it and I was like, you made it out of an rv.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm not about to eat this. You don't support black business.
Lamorne Morris
Not out of an rv.
Jess Alaris
Oh, that depends on where it's at.
Lamorne Morris
No, I refuse.
Charlamagne Tha God
I ain't no dick comedy. Interesting. I mean, I just like, I like, I like the, the people you use as examples. Because I never thought about that.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah, I mean, yeah, but you, but then you got, I mean, you got some people that are just legendary that do it all, you know, Martin, Eddie Murphy, he hasn't, he hasn't done. He hasn't been on the stage in a long time, but Eddie's the king, you know, Jamie Foxx.
Charlamagne Tha God
Jamie.
Lamorne Morris
Jamie Foxx to me is the greatest performer of all time. Greatest performer of all time. Like just overall performance, Jamie, there's nobody better than Jamie Foxx.
Charlamagne Tha God
Why? Because he can do so many things. Are just.
Lamorne Morris
He can do so many things at a high level and he's brave enough to do it. You know, there are a lot of people, like, internally. This is a real thought that I have. This is a real thought. I think I am the greatest stand up comic of all time. But you would never like that. But you never know. Know it because I don't be doing it. So everybody can say.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know what I mean?
Lamorne Morris
Everybody can say, I truly inter. And this is not me exaggerating. I'm looking at all these people on this wall and I'm like, yeah, if I took, if I took the time, I'd be better than all of them.
Charlamagne Tha God
I had some people on this wall.
Lamorne Morris
I don't give a who they are.
Charlamagne Tha God
Dick gr.
Jess Alaris
I was going to say Dick gr.
Lamorne Morris
It doesn't matter.
Charlamagne Tha God
Kevin Hart.
Lamorne Morris
It doesn't matter.
Charlamagne Tha God
Martin.
Lamorne Morris
It doesn't matter.
Charlamagne Tha God
Doesn't matter.
Lamorne Morris
It doesn't matter.
Charlamagne Tha God
You should feel like that.
Lamorne Morris
I Will. And it's the. And it's a fact. I feel I could be so much better than them. But here's where we differ. They got way more courage. They have way. They're. They're.
Charlamagne Tha God
They just have it.
Lamorne Morris
There's the one thing that we forget about is that to. To be them, you have to not only have. Do you have to be skilled and gifted at what you do, but your drive and that it. Thing has to happen.
Charlamagne Tha God
It has to be there.
Lamorne Morris
And I could say all day that I, That I have it, but until I prove it, I gotta shut the up.
Jess Alaris
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know what I mean? I'm not even out there.
Lamorne Morris
I was just on stage recently for Netflix as a joke. I just did it. It was dope.
Charlamagne Tha God
It was great. I had.
Lamorne Morris
It was. It was fun and people liked it and that.
Charlamagne Tha God
I get that itch.
Lamorne Morris
I go on stage and I go, okay, great. They laughed. And I go, yeah, I don't need to do this for another six months.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, my God.
Lamorne Morris
Because what y' all do is. It's like, you know how hard that is? You know, you know, we gotta hit
Charlamagne Tha God
the stage over and over and over
Lamorne Morris
again and test jokes and deal with the. The ones that don't work, you gotta do. That is a. That is people, People forget how much work goes into it, and they don't. And there's sometimes, as much as I'd like to say I'm great at it, I don't have what they have.
Charlamagne Tha God
I think that's the hardest thing to do on stage, stand up comedy.
Lamorne Morris
It is.
Charlamagne Tha God
I really do. Like, it's. You by yourself with a whole crowd of people that have the expectation.
Lamorne Morris
Yes, yes.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's. You got to be insane to even go out there, to be honest with you.
Lamorne Morris
You know, hardest to change somebody's mood. People walk into comedy Club pit half the time.
Jess Alaris
Right.
Lamorne Morris
But that's.
Jess Alaris
They come there for, you know, comic relief. And you are a genius writer. So I don't understand why that's like the scariest thing for you to do.
Lamorne Morris
And I, I came up on the stage. It's just. There's a certain level of anxiety I get that I can't control. And I go, but 2:30 seconds into it, I'm having fun. But it's that panic of the week before where I'm like, okay, I gotta go perform at this stage and do this thing. And I'm just like.
Charlamagne Tha God
And.
Lamorne Morris
And people around me will tell me me. They were like, you are annoying to be around when you got a show.
Jess Alaris
Right?
Lamorne Morris
People Talking to me. I'm like, don't say words in front of me, because then I gotta go say. I might say your words when I get on. Just shut up.
Charlamagne Tha God
And it's.
Lamorne Morris
I can't live that way.
Charlamagne Tha God
I can't.
Lamorne Morris
I can't live that way. Maybe it's just a habit that I need to practice more.
Charlamagne Tha God
But, like, when the last time you
Lamorne Morris
did a black, like, black, black, black, black, black.
Jess Alaris
Damn, it ain't been Gucci been that long.
Charlamagne Tha God
It's a word I want to say, but you got white people in here with you, so I'm not gonna say it.
Lamorne Morris
Go ahead and say it.
Charlamagne Tha God
You know the word I'm talking about. Black. You did one of those rooms.
Lamorne Morris
Oh, my God. Probably last year. We did. We did a few room. We did probably at the Improv. It was at the Improv. We did a show. I hosted a show. And in between, I would do. I would do sets. I would do like 10 minute sets in between. That was a cool show because I had Arsenio headline in Arsenio Hall. Headliner.
Jess Alaris
God damn, what a flex.
Lamorne Morris
I mean, yeah, yeah, at Arsenio headline. And so that was. That was a cool moment in my life. It was interesting because Arsenio was even like, hey, man, when you going up next? I was like, a few months.
Charlamagne Tha God
He was like, what?
Lamorne Morris
He was like, what are you talking about? He was like, you just be popping up and then not doing it again. I'm like, yeah, it's fun, man. He's like, you gotta keep doing it. He's like, what are you doing? What's happening with you? I was like, I'm an actor, you know, and I. And I. I know how hard it is to do what you guys do. I'm having fun up there right now. And in this moment, people, there's laughter because I improvise a lot, but, like, to sit down and craft. 45 minutes to an hour. I was talking with Chris Rock about it the other day. Chris Rock was like, before I put a special out, you know, I got like 300 shows that I've done 300 small rooms. He's like the, the average comic when they put their special out, they've done 40 rooms. He was like, me, it's 300. And I was like, that's why he's Chris Rock. But 300 shows is crazy. He. We were at the brunt. The Netflix is a joke brunch. And he was just like, after this, I'm. I'm, I'm. I'm hitting a few Clubs tonight. I was like, jesus Christ.
Charlamagne Tha God
He was like, yeah, yeah, man.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah, man. He was. He was just, like, locked in. Like, that's a different level of locked in.
Charlamagne Tha God
Do you ever feel like Hollywood typecast you as safe, fun, funny? Yeah.
Lamorne Morris
Oh, my God. All the time. And that's.
Charlamagne Tha God
And that's.
Lamorne Morris
It started out as a thing that I just. That just happened, and then it was like. Then I started protecting my peace a little bit with, With. With going like, you know, Flip Wilson is one of my favorite performers, and, you know, I read his book, and he talked about being safe, and people considered him being safe, but he was a wild dude off, off camera, and he was like, yeah, I'm gonna keep it though way, because I don't need people knowing what I do is a show. I, I, that's the show. You don't need to know who I really am in my personal life. And so for me, it's kind of the same way. Like, my friends will tell you, people around me will tell you. I, like, on my podcast, I say, probably every day that could get. That could get me canceled. But then I go in the edit, we're like, I don't need it. I don't need it.
Charlamagne Tha God
It.
Lamorne Morris
It's a funny joke, but I don't need it because I don't. Like, I don't. There's this certain heat that I don't want. There's certain heat that I don't want. And we all bounce back from it. People who get canceled, they all bounce back from it. But I don't. You know, I got. I don't.
Jess Alaris
But is it funny?
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, see, it'd be. It'd be fun.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah.
Jess Alaris
If it's funny, if it's more funny than offensive, it ain't going. It ain't gonna matter.
Lamorne Morris
I wish I. I wish. I wish
Lauren LaRosa
it'd be like, well, why would we air.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
We were in conversation with this studio. I think that's a big thing for you, too. Like, you.
Lamorne Morris
100% studio work, corporate, you know, corporate sponsors, and even a spokesperson for certain. You know, I go, man, is this joke worth losing? That I got you that platform. You know what I mean? Now, I always said this. I say this all the time. The moment certain things go away, you're about to get the most unhinged version of me you've ever seen in your life. Because then, now, now everything is in house. Like, like, that's, That's. That's the reason why I do love standup comics. Because no matter what you take away from stand up. Comics.
Lauren LaRosa
Comics.
Lamorne Morris
The audience don't go nowhere.
Jess Alaris
Yeah.
Lamorne Morris
You know, I could still. You still go on stage and still make your money and still have the fans support you.
Charlamagne Tha God
And now it's podcast as well.
Lamorne Morris
Exactly, exactly. But. But what I like, you know, I liked about Kevin Hart special is that he. He kept. Or his roast is that he kept. He kept, like, shouting out his sponsors.
Charlamagne Tha God
Really?
Lamorne Morris
He's like, sorry for what I'm about to say to all my sponsors, blah, blah, blah. This has nothing to do with you guys. And he would go say some wild. You know what I mean? That's the type of energy that I would. That, that, that I'm. That I try to have on my podcast.
Charlamagne Tha God
Is it a dollar amount? Is it an age to. Where you going to say it? Because I remember Kev, and I'm sure this is on video somewhere. Kev literally said, I'm going to do this, this, this, this, and this. And then I'm going to get to the point where I'm going to turn hill.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Everybody's going to hit me and I'm g. Say what the hell I want. I remember him saying this 10 years ago. Yeah.
Lamorne Morris
I'd probably say it has to have a B in front of it.
Charlamagne Tha God
Okay. Right.
Lamorne Morris
Billion dollars.
Charlamagne Tha God
God. At that point. B. Yeah.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah. B, A B. I could run somebody over and get sued for 50 million. There's nothing to me. I could.
Lauren LaRosa
You know what I mean?
Lamorne Morris
I'm not going to see inside of a jail sale. I own the prison.
Charlamagne Tha God
Damn. I got one more question. What insecurity do you still carry from before fame, that success?
Lamorne Morris
I'm working on it. This is something I am very much so working on. You know, there were some things that happened to me younger in my dating life. When I'm talking younger, younger, like 14, that I joke about because it's funny. But there are times I find that it pops up in my dating life that. That it makes me feel like I haven't gotten over it. And I have, but it. But telling these jokes on stage about it is very therapeutic.
Lauren LaRosa
Judic.
Lamorne Morris
There was. There was a. There was. It was. I was about to lose my virginity to someone and she said, should we.
Charlamagne Tha God
She wanted to.
Lamorne Morris
She was like, oh, I was talking to this other cat. He said that you haven't done it before in your life. So maybe I should. Maybe he should have sex with me while you watch. Oh, so then you'll know what you're doing. And after that, I was just like all women trying to be like all of them. I was 14 and I was like, what is she talking about?
Charlamagne Tha God
So you was cooking early, bro.
Lamorne Morris
I didn't do it.
Charlamagne Tha God
I didn't. I didn't this day to day. I didn't.
Lamorne Morris
There's no way. There was no chair. There was no chair in my, in my household.
Charlamagne Tha God
So how did you reply to her?
Lamorne Morris
I. I didn't. I just thought that was ridiculous and I just. We stopped talking.
Lauren LaRosa
He at 14.
Lamorne Morris
14 this.
Jess Alaris
How old was he?
Lamorne Morris
7.
Charlamagne Tha God
This.
Lamorne Morris
Run up to me and run up to me at school.
Charlamagne Tha God
Damn, you missed it, Joe. Where you was at?
Lamorne Morris
He went through with it.
Lauren LaRosa
So what does that do for you in your day in life today?
Lamorne Morris
My day in life tonight. When I first look at a woman, I go, this probably just came straight from a gang.
Charlamagne Tha God
Then I got, then I got, then
Lamorne Morris
I got to get into it.
Charlamagne Tha God
Then I got to know. But I love you.
Lamorne Morris
I hope you didn't just come straight from a gang. No, it doesn't, it's just like.
Charlamagne Tha God
It's just, it's just.
Lamorne Morris
It doesn't actually do anything for my dating life now. But it's. It's always a bit that I remember, and it's always a moment in my life that I remember. And it's, it's almost like you was
Charlamagne Tha God
thinking what you were thinking back then. That's what stuck with you. And I don't call women that word, but that's what you were thinking back then. But back then, yeah, back then, for sure.
Lamorne Morris
I was 14, man.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, I was 14.
Lamorne Morris
And I had no real, I had no real reference point. You know what I mean? Like, my, you know, my father wasn't around. I didn't see the romance in the household.
Jess Alaris
Gotcha.
Lamorne Morris
You know, you thought all women was
Charlamagne Tha God
getting down like that.
Jess Alaris
I just, you know, I, I was 14. Like, this is the first, like, experience.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah. You had all my friends were, were, were, were, were getting laid. I wasn't down.
Charlamagne Tha God
I was just like, man, so are
Lauren LaRosa
you romantic on dates?
Lamorne Morris
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, 100%. I'm very much so romantic on dates. But I'm also, I have a cynical sense of humor. You know what I mean? And sometimes I'd like to, in conversation,
Charlamagne Tha God
do bits and bring up, and then
Lamorne Morris
they're just like, that's too much, man. Like, gang first date, I'm like, okay, one, One, are you have a close personal relationship with your parents? Okay, cool. Two, have you been gang?
Jess Alaris
God damn.
Charlamagne Tha God
What woman made you unlearn that? What woman made you feel like, you know what? All women aren't out Here getting games.
Lamorne Morris
Oh, that made probably. This is probably the. The woman, the girl. I lost my virginity too. You know what I mean? Like, I lost that later. I lost that a while ago. But it is something that I keep doing as a. And I can't stop doing it. No, the bit I just can't. I can't stop doing stuck with me. And it's. I'm sure it's annoying.
Lauren LaRosa
Are you and Nassim, are y' all really going on a date? Is that gonna actually happen? One of his co stars from New Girl, but he called her on the podcast, which is very awkward.
Lamorne Morris
Yeah, I called her the podcast and was like, hey, we should go on a date. And she was like, okay, cool. And then it kind of went everywhere. But I was joking.
Lauren LaRosa
But. Oh, so that's not gonna really happen because people really. They want to see y'.
Jess Alaris
All. What if she had really, like, had a big crush on you and she was trying to, like, work her way up to asking you, and you call her and you ask her to go on a date with you and. And you playing.
Charlamagne Tha God
Well, here's the thing.
Lamorne Morris
We known each other, so we know. We know each other so well that when she agreed to it, I immediately knew she understood what was happening.
Lauren LaRosa
Oh, she's playing.
Lamorne Morris
I immediately knew, you know, and we talked about. She called me afterwards. She was like, you know, people are going to really believe that. Right?
Lauren LaRosa
You know what y' all do on the show.
Lamorne Morris
I know, but we. We're so. We're so close. I used to date one of her best friends. You know what I mean? And like, we. It's not like that.
Charlamagne Tha God
I mean, mean, you probably got a good, good, good recommendation. You said. You said you need to date one of her best friends. You probably got a good recommendation sometimes.
Lamorne Morris
I mean, possibly, Possibly. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
I got a five star review and
Lamorne Morris
don't know it, but she ain't gonna do that. She wouldn't do that to her friend. She wouldn't do. I know some women will. Yeah. You know why?
Jess Alaris
Damn.
Charlamagne Tha God
It's Lamore and Morris. Y' all go check out Spider Noir. May 25th. Man, thank you for joining us.

This past weekend, like every other Sunday, you were on the court with the guys playing ball. Just a quick pickup game, living out your hoop dreams. No triple doubles, but mean set of threes in between buckets. One of the homies mentioned he closed on a new crib. This is big. And while everyone's asking about housewarming and making plans to celebrate, you're asking the real questions. Like has he spoken to his State Farm agent yet about coverage? See, homeownership is one thing, but the right coverage is the real game changer. Even more than your last hot streak, it's how you protect your legacy. Dropping buckets and bars on the court. A State Farm agent can more than assist you with finding the right coverage for your new place. If you have a claim, your local agent can help you file it. Yup, that's right. Over the phone, in person, online or on the app, they are ready to help you and they don't drop the ball. You know what I mean? Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.

I get a lot of questions about how I run my business and keep everything operating smoothly. And the answer is Shopify. Shopify is the commerce platform that lets me take my idea and turn it into a real, fully functioning business. One of the biggest advantages is discoverability. Shopify puts my products in front of customers wherever they're already shopping. Google, YouTube, TikTok, Shop, Shop, the Shop app, and even inside ChatGPT. And for my store, whether it's a mug, a shirt or a hoodie, all the raindrops can get something special to call their own. And Shopify's AI Co Founder Sidekick has become a core part of my workflow. It assists with tasks like website optimization, analyzing sale trends, updating product skus and generating reports. Right now the Black Effect storefront is busy and Shopify is handling the heavy lifting. I'm so pumped because Shopify is going to show up at our Black Effect Podcast Festival this year in a big way for all of our small black owned businesses that partner with us. Build your store, own your audience and create something that lasts. Start now@shopify.com Ben Amazon Health AI presents painful thoughts I I can't stop scratching my downtown.

DJ Envy
Let's get right to the latest.
Charlamagne Tha God
You'll talk LL Cool Babe.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, I'm not dumbing myself down. I'm being myself.
Charlamagne Tha God
So source is trust.
Lauren LaRosa
I'm the home girl that knows a little bit about everything and everything. Little brown girls look at you and go, I want to be like you.
Charlamagne Tha God
Take me through that.
Lauren LaRosa
Take me through there.
Charlamagne Tha God
She going. The latest with Laurio on the Breakfast Club. LL Cool B. Talk to me.
Lauren LaRosa
All right, guys. So yesterday, Real Housewives of Atlanta, the episode premiere premiered. And, you know, we've had Portia Williams up here, and we were talking to Portia about just the. The relationship between her and K. Michell. And because it was such a good relationship, and K. Michelle has been staying out of the drama. But things are starting to change. So K. Michelle got very upset on the show on this new episode, and she says she feels unsafe with the women over a oyster conversation. Let's take a listen to Real Housewives of Atlanta. Their oyster comments. Be careful with the oysters, Cynthia. Let me check them for you first. What are you checking for? What is you doing? What are you checking for?
Jess Alaris
Okay, Porsche, let me check in it.
Lauren LaRosa
Your face ain't right. That vagina is clean. This one might be a little tense. This is odd to me.
Charlamagne Tha God
What are you checking for? Does she always smell oysters? I don't know.
Lauren LaRosa
So in that audio, you hear Portia Kelly, I mean, all the women are at the table. They're on their trip. They're over in Texas. But you hear in that audio, Portia, who is, like, chucking through the oysters. Kelly, who's questioning why she's even doing that, and Cynthia, that's kind of like trying to figure out what's going on as well. To Cynthia Bailey. Now, this has been, of course, like a. A touchy topic for K. Michelle because of previous conversations that she's had to have on this topic. But it gets to a point where she breaks down. No. The topic of, like, you know, just her conversations that have been happening about her body falsely accusing her of different things. Yeah. Yes.
DJ Envy
So she thinks it's a shot at her.
Lauren LaRosa
Yes. K. Michelle thinks that this is a shot at her. And even in the episode, you see her looking like, why are we even having this conversation? Like what? Like what is happening right now? Right. And in episodes leading up to this, I will say that there's been other things that have been happening where K. Michelle thinks that Portia Is like, taking shots, but, like, hiding her hand type of thing.
Jess Alaris
Like, so, like, the first conversation, like, the first little interaction that they had that K. Michelle didn't like was when Portia was, like, a miscarriage.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah. Because K. Michelle had earlier in the season get things removed from her body because they. Some of her surgery work was literally, like, almost about to kill her. So she was talking about that, and K. Michelle's like, wait, you had a misconception? And she didn't like that comment. She's like, you know, you know what's going on. Why would you make that comment? And this situation right here feels like, you know, this was something that was heavily talked about. Why are we even talking about this? So she says she doesn't feel safe. Let's take a listen to K. Michelle on not feeling safe at dinner yesterday.
Jess Alaris
Okay. You said you didn't feel safe.
Charlamagne Tha God
Is that true?
Caller/Listener
No.
Lauren LaRosa
Y' all can sit here and say you care about people when y' all be sitting there plotting and trying to
Jess Alaris
do stuff to people. If I know that a mother is sitting there plotting my hair, I'm not
Caller/Listener
gonna smile in your face.
Jess Alaris
I know exactly the whole plot. And I want you as a person to know that you are a low
Lauren LaRosa
down mother, and that's why you ain't got. Last night, after we left dinner, someone called me and said that there was a plot in the plan this whole time from some of these ladies. One was to imply that I was with your boyfriend or not boyfriend, whatever the moment is. Two to talk about a rumor that a disgruntled ex said:8 years ago. I already know who you contacted, what blogs you called to go read that and want to spread that. I think that is very disheartening. And that shows the character of these women. Yeah. So that with the ex or the boyfriend conversation, she's talking about Drew. Drew has this new, like, little boo thing, and she has been kind of picking at K. Michelle about how they know each other. K. Michelle's like this guy being her dm, but she don't know him. Now, on the other hand, she's having that conversation about, you know, the rumors that, you know, were falsely spread about her body and certain odors. And she's upset about it, especially because she felt like Portia was her friend on the show. Now, this has spiraled to Portia and K. Michelle now going back and forth on X during yesterday's episode as it premiered. So yesterday, K. Michelle tweeted just about somebody being a coward. And, you know, Portia responded back So K. Michelle said, don't sit in my face and play like you don't know what I'm talking about. You want a reaction so you can have it, Say it to my face or be a quiet coward. Coward, Portia says, who is a coward? I would define a coward as a person tweeting from the same house. Tutor is down for me. Next time, let's do our job and bring it to the front door real time. That's how it's done on Real Housewives of Atlanta. And then Portia tweeted, oh, Twitter, fingers shaking the table, hashtag activated, and she added, k. Michelle.
Jess Alaris
So I. I do want to just say, in my opinion, I don't think K. Michelle, like, K. Michelle, needs her own show. That's what I feel like. I feel like she don't really need to be on the show. With these group of ladies, it is. This is what they do. This is what they feel like.
DJ Envy
It don't fit.
Jess Alaris
I feel like it's not a good fit for K. I feel like when we saw her on Love and Hip Hop years ago, she could fit in there because she was still. She still had things to prove, you know what I'm saying? And she. It was following, like, some controversy that happened, you know, with her and one of her exes or whatever. Now, after that, she went on to get her own show where she could write her own narrative, and it was more so centered around her. Is, you know, she. She's of a different stature. She, you know, she didn't won awards, she got successful.
DJ Envy
But it's never been Kumbaya. Right? Real Housewives has never been Kumbaya.
Lauren LaRosa
TV is never, in my opinion.
DJ Envy
Last week, it was taking shots at Pinky Cole.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, but.
Jess Alaris
But that's more of, like, I don't know. Something about this is just. It does not feel like she needs to be on this show.
Lauren LaRosa
I just think for the last. For the last episode. And y' all know I love Portia, but the last episode with the miscarri thing, I'm like, okay, I don't understand how that was a misconception. But with this. I mean, even if. I mean. Because I think sometimes it's like we don't know what's real and what's not. So producers are, like, throwing in this storyline, throwing in this joke. If that did happen, and, you know, because all of that was in the news, I don't even know if I would even touch that, especially if I'm the person that brought you into the show. But if it was just jokey. Jokey happened to come out because they're sitting there with oysters, and that's the conversation she's having. And she didn't do it perfectly. Seriously, I would just come out and say, I didn't do that.
Caller/Listener
You know what I mean?
Jess Alaris
And it's not even because of this. I just feel like, well, it did
DJ Envy
his job because we've been talking about it for eight minutes because of this.
Jess Alaris
I just feel like K. Michelle needs to be on a different type of reality show.
Lauren LaRosa
I don't even know if reality is for her at this season in her life.
Jess Alaris
Well, probably not at this point.
Lauren LaRosa
I was excited for her, but then I saw this be her own because
Jess Alaris
she got so much going on and, you know, it's all about K and K World. So it should be.
Charlamagne Tha God
She should be on her own, I tell you. Tell you what, I'm still stuck on the fact they compared oysters to vaginas. I've never heard that one.
Jess Alaris
You've never heard the oysters being an aphrodisiac?
Lauren LaRosa
No.
Charlamagne Tha God
I know it's an aphrodisiac, but I ain't never heard of a oyster actually compared to an actual vagina. I've heard vaginas called clams, but I've never had clams, but I've had oysters. And I don't know if oysters taste like vaginas because I've never put Tabasco on a vagina.
Jess Alaris
No.
Charlamagne Tha God
Now I need to eat an oyster without Tabasco to see if they taste the same.
Jess Alaris
Some of them be a little fishy, though. You know what I mean?
DJ Envy
I think that's vaginas.
Jess Alaris
Well, yeah, but oysters, some of them, they smell fishier than others. You know what I mean?
Charlamagne Tha God
If it smell like cologne, leave it alone. Smell like fish. Eat all you wish told me that in the 90s. Okay.
Lauren LaRosa
I felt bad watching K. Michelle break down the way she did on this episode.
Charlamagne Tha God
That makes more sense now than it did in the 90s.
DJ Envy
It definitely makes more sense.
Charlamagne Tha God
That, like, cologne leave. Leave it alone. It smell like fish. Eat all you wish.
DJ Envy
Lord, the sad thing is we forget. We forget that K. Michelle's an artist, right?
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, I ain't. We don't forget it.
DJ Envy
But what's Ms. K. Michelle last record?
Charlamagne Tha God
The country joint.
DJ Envy
The country joint.
Jess Alaris
He got older but never grew.
DJ Envy
Can we get a K?
Jess Alaris
That was the thing you forget.
Charlamagne Tha God
Thank you, K. Michelle, for coming to the Black Effect Podcast festival this year, being a part of the Drink Chance podcast. Appreciate you.
DJ Envy
I think we forget that she's an artist and she's really dope. That's why she was better on Love
Jess Alaris
and hip hop because.
DJ Envy
Because we talk about all the bs, but we forget about the fact that she's a dope artist.
Charlamagne Tha God
K. Michelle ain't been to the Breakfast Club. And yes, K. Michelle, you.
Lauren LaRosa
I've been reached out. Yes, I've been reached out for her to come up. When they first announced her on Housewives, because I was so excited to see her get back in reality tv. Now I'm like, man, I don't know, maybe she should protect her piece some a little bit longer.
Jess Alaris
Well, protecting your peace ain't joining the cast of Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Lauren LaRosa
We'll see. They got some more episodes coming. Hopefully they figure it out, man. Because her and Portia, they was giving dynamic duo a little bit in the beginning.
Charlamagne Tha God
All right, well, her vaginas taste like oysters.
DJ Envy
That was the latest.
Lauren LaRosa
We wouldn't.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, well.
Lauren LaRosa
Jess. I know.
Caller/Listener
Wow,
Jess Alaris
wow, wow, wow, wow.
Charlamagne Tha God
Donkey.
DJ Envy
How's it going, Lauren? I like that one.
Charlamagne Tha God
I like that.
Jess Alaris
Okay.
Lauren LaRosa
That hairline.
DJ Envy
All right, all right, chubby donkey.
Charlamagne Tha God
Today we give you donkey, too. Before after the hours going to the speaker of the House, Mike Johnson. He needs to come to the front of the congregation. We'd like to have a word with him, please.
DJ Envy
All right, we'll get to that. Next we got a camera shell joint. All right, let's get into it. It's the Breakfast Club. Good morning.
Charlamagne Tha God
This is America.
Caller/Listener
There is no question that there are
Charlamagne Tha God
problems in this country between police and community. Yes, you are a donkey. To the latest on that police killing of a black man.
Mimi Brown
Now to new developments in the deadly spa shooting rampage.
Lamorne Morris
And yesterday, it was a really bad, bad day for him.
Charlamagne Tha God
And this is what he did.
Lauren LaRosa
And so we are in a state of emergency, okay?
Charlamagne Tha God
White supremacist violence is always have been the number one threat to our society. But I'm also very proud that my wife is white. Such a Breakfast Club, bitches.
Jess Alaris
All right, Charlene, please tell me, why
Charlamagne Tha God
was I your donkey of the day? Happy Monday, y'. All. Donkey of the day for Monday, May 18, goes to the speaker of the House of the United States of America, my Mike Johnson. Now, I know it's a lot going on, and you've probably seen the headline on how the Supreme Court has made it harder to protect black voting power by weakening parts of the Voting Rights act of 1965. They've been doing this since 2013, okay? President Barack Obama scared the establishment so much that they Said, we are going to make sure this never happens again. Okay? We cannot let these negroes have any political power. So that rally you saw this weekend in Montgomery, Alabama, the all roads lead to the south, right Rally, that was because the Supreme Court essentially gutted the Voting Rights act and severely limited protections against voting discrimination. And I don't think anybody cares except for black people. Okay? I'm serious. I saw the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, say Democrats need to be talking more about the gutting of the Voting Rights Act. This is the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom. He posted Democrats need to be talking more about the gunning. And he put gunning in capital letters of the Voting Rights Act. MAGA is silencing voters and carving up black districts all across the south to hold on to power. This is Jim Crow 2.0. Silence is not an option. In, quote, the fact that Gavin Newsom, the Governor of California, big Democrat, had to post that is exactly why people don't like Democrats. Okay? The voting power of your most loyal constituents, the cornerstone of your electoral success, has been weak, weakened, gutted. And one of your most prominent faces, Gavin Newsom, has to tell y' all not to be silent about it. Unbelievable. But like I said, nobody seems to care about this issue except for black people. And that leads me to speaker of the House Mike Johnson. He was on Fox News Sunday with Shannon Beam yesterday and he was asked what his message was to black Americans after the Supreme Court delivered such a severe blow to the Voting Rights Act. Let's listen to what he said. This is a great turnaround and a turn back to Jim Crower of politics in the 50s.
Lauren LaRosa
We're looking at losing possibly 19 members of the Congressional Black Caucus because of this, frankly, racist redistricting efforts targeted towards disenfranchising black voters across the country.
Mimi Brown
So what is your message to black Americans, black voters, about this redistricting?
Charlamagne Tha God
The Supreme Court issued a long awaited opinion and I think it was long overdue. And they stated, stated the obvious, that drawing congressional lines must be fair. You cannot draw lines on the basis of race. And that's what was done in Louisiana. So they declared it to be an unconstitutional gerrymander. And it was. This is brings back fairness and certainty, this to the system. And I think a lot of states are looking to make sure that their maps are not unconstitutional like Louisiana's was. Mike, Michael, Mikey, what are we talking about? Counting. Okay. Majority black districts are the real racial gerrymandering. Imagine somebody stealing your car and then getting mad at you because you have a GPS tracker on. Okay, Mother effort. Who told you to steal my car in the first place? Okay? You're the reason I gotta have a GPS tracker. You can't spend decades suppressing black voters, weakening the Voting Rights act every chance you get, slicing up districts like sweet potato pie. Well, for you it's probably pumpkin, maybe apple, but you can't be slicing up the districts. Then all of us of a sudden, just randomly, you discover colorblindness when black people start getting political representation. And this is why black people don't trust politicians, okay? America has a long history of moving the goal post anytime black folks figure out how to play the game they invented.
Lamorne Morris
Okay?
Charlamagne Tha God
First it was literacy tests, then poll taxes, now it's. Well, actually, protecting black voting power is racist, too. We need protection. Mike Johnson. Okay? I don't trust y' all to go raw even though we've been together a long time. Okay? I know you are no good, dirty hoe. Okay? I would love to be celibate and abstain all together from being in any type of relationship with you, but that's not the way American politics work, okay? I have to engage. And let's be clear. Every district is drawn strategically. Republicans do it, Democrats do it. The difference is when black voters ask for districts where they can actually elect somebody who represents them, people think that's a problem. Okay? I've seen a lot of Republicans say, well, how come Republicans can't represent black people? Easy answer. Because historically, they have shown us they don't and they aren't willing to. Okay, Democrats at least have shown us they're willing to work with us. I guess one party acts like they like us, the other party don't give a damn. Okay? Mike Johnson and other Republicans are basically saying we should stop making districts about race. So, sir, race made the districts in the first place. Okay? Race conscious districts were created because black voters were historically diluted or shut out of representation. That's why they calling it Jim Crow 2.0. Okay? This is just another example of how America loves to celebrate black voting power. Right up until black voters start actually influencing power. And now all of a sudden, they want to start using words like fairness when the reality is, is we needed the Voting Rights act of 1965 because things weren't fair for us to begin with. Please give speaker the House Mike Johnson the biggest he haul.
DJ Envy
All right?
Charlamagne Tha God
Yes, ma'. Am.
DJ Envy
Well, thank you for that donkey today, sir. Now, when we come back, let's open up the phone lines. 800-585-1051. It's prom season, ladies and gentlemen. I know a lot of your kids are about to head to promote and it's getting a lot, it's getting a little ridiculous. I'm gonna say a lot ridiculous, but it's getting ridiculous. Right? Jess was just showing me some of the prom ideas and outfits and commitment that these parents are really putting effort into doing. Like these girls dresses are like $4,000.
Jess Alaris
Yep, $4,000. A parent paid 4,500. I've seen another parent, she paid 9,9000. So like just under a dress, they're creating sets. They're creating sets.
DJ Envy
Airbnb mansions.
Caller/Listener
Yes.
Jess Alaris
They're renting these flowers and balloons like wedding weddings just for send offs. Yes. This is like these are bigger. Like bigger than some weddings.
DJ Envy
Written three four hundred thousand dollar cars
Jess Alaris
to drive there and back paying sick from six hundred to a thousand dollars per hour for these, these kids proms.
DJ Envy
Let's, let's, let's open up the phone lines. 800-585-1051. Is, is social media the reason why this is getting ridiculous?
Jess Alaris
Yeah, because the thing is I went through the comments and I saw a lot of other parents like wow, this is why my daughter didn't even want to go to prom. I still, my son didn't want to go to prom because they didn't want to be made fun of because I ain't got it like that for them to be stepping out in Rolls Royces and Bentley's and all of that. So I was like zim, when you
DJ Envy
went to the prom it was just a limo.
Jess Alaris
Yeah, like I. Yep, because it was a limo.
DJ Envy
It was eight of us in the limo.
Jess Alaris
Me and my friends had to put up, we had to all put up,
DJ Envy
put in 200 each to get the limo.
Jess Alaris
And then we would find a diner or like a nice restaurant that stayed open later than you know, the, the after the prom we would go and we had to be in the house.
DJ Envy
Did you go to the prom amongst one or they had prom.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'll come punch you in your baby. Oh my God.
Jess Alaris
Y' all didn't have prom down there. I could punch you in.
Charlamagne Tha God
Everybody.
DJ Envy
Oh, you just caught that.
Charlamagne Tha God
Everybody should act your wage. That's all I'm getting from this. You know what I mean?
Jess Alaris
Yeah, but these are kids.
Charlamagne Tha God
What you showed me on Instagram, I know everybody not doing that.
Jess Alaris
No. Yeah, that was crazy.
DJ Envy
But a lot of people are doing that. They're saving for that. Like they are putting money to the side for their baby's prom, which is ridiculous.
Charlamagne Tha God
I Mean, prom is a once in a lifetime experience, right? Especially for girls.
Lauren LaRosa
Junior, then you got senior.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, yeah, my daughter, My daughter went to junior. She's about to go to her senior. Girls, are you going over and beyond
DJ Envy
for, for her prom like that?
Jess Alaris
That's what she want.
Charlamagne Tha God
I don't be involved in none of that type of stuff. Okay.
Jess Alaris
You just swipe the card.
Charlamagne Tha God
They just use your card my wife got going on.
DJ Envy
Let's open up the phone lines. 800-585-1051. Is prom getting too ridiculous? Is social media making it where people are spending too much money on a
Jess Alaris
damn prom and they're discouraging other kids?
DJ Envy
Let's discuss the Breakfast Club.
Charlamagne Tha God
Good morning. It's topic time.
DJ Envy
Call 800-585-1051 to join into the discussion
Charlamagne Tha God
with the Breakfast Club.
DJ Envy
Morning, everybody. It's DJ Envy. Just hilarious. Charlamagne, the guy. We are the Breakfast Club. Now, if you're just joining us, it's prom season and a lot of people are getting ready to prom. And Jess was showing me all these planned out proms and these people going to the proms. And the amount of money that people were spending was through the roof. I mean, I mean, paying four or $5,000 for dresses, I mean renting four, $500,000 cars, renting Airbnb mansions, and doing like a display, like somebody's getting married. I mean, like a floral display, like a wedding and balloons. And people are spending, they say online, 30, 40,000 for the prom.
Jess Alaris
Yeah. So if you doing that and graduation season is right around the corner. What are you, how you gonna top that? How are you even gonna top that?
Lauren LaRosa
This is crazy.
Jess Alaris
Now, I ain't gonna lie lie. It's beautiful and it's great gestures and I, I honestly feel like a lot of these parents, they, they either got it like that or they're overcompensating for, you know, not. They want to give their kids what they didn't have. And our kids are, all of our teenagers are influenced by what they see online. So I feel like, you know, you trying to keep up.
DJ Envy
You know, ours was easy. You, you, you find out what your, your date is wearing. D. What color you wearing? So give me a little of color. I'll go to menswear house, rent a tuxedo, keep it moving.
Jess Alaris
Yeah, tux.
DJ Envy
And then you.
Jess Alaris
We all thought we was doing a damn thing. I'm looking at these kids, they shooting whole tubi movies. Yeah, that's like holds productions for send offs.
DJ Envy
That is crazy. Charlamagne you did go to the prom.
Charlamagne Tha God
I did go to the prom. But actually it don't even matter.
Jess Alaris
Like, you know what? You did go to the prom. Cuz your eyebrows was real skinny.
DJ Envy
Oh yeah, that's right. He did his eyebrows.
Charlamagne Tha God
He looked like a babbage in regards to the kids. Now I'm not mad at it. You know what I'm saying? I'm saying everybody act your wage. Like if you can afford to do that for your kids, do it. Plus, I think we forgetting that a lot of these kids be working and they got their own money.
Caller/Listener
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
So a lot of them, especially when it comes to prom and stuff, they be doing this balling on on their own. But if you're a parent and you can afford to do it for your kids, I don't. I don't care.
DJ Envy
Yeah, I think it's a lot though. Hello? Who's this?
Caller/Listener
Cherise.
DJ Envy
Hey, Sharice. Good morning.
Caller/Listener
Yeah, how you doing? Good morning.
DJ Envy
Good morning. We're talking prom season. What's your thoughts, mama?
Caller/Listener
My thoughts on the situation is it's a hard conversation to have and a hard pill to swallow. But I heard a comment that said a lot of these kids are going extravagant for their prom because they won't ever experience a wedding in their life. And I was like, ooh, for the community. That's a hard pill to swallow. But if you look at the facts of it, it is kind of true. But I don't want to see that.
Jess Alaris
But.
Caller/Listener
But honestly, I've been to more baby showers than I have weddings. So I think it is. I think it is pretty messed up. And I do want to see the culture change, but that's just my opinion.
DJ Envy
Okay.
Jess Alaris
God damn. I ain't think about it that way. You know, I mean, obviously that's why we have callers, to provide other perspectives. But I didn't think about it that way.
Lauren LaRosa
How y' all gonna say these kids
Jess Alaris
ain't gonna get married?
Charlamagne Tha God
That's what one of our producers came
Lamorne Morris
in here and said.
Charlamagne Tha God
But I just paid her no attention cuz I just felt like she's thinking about her own life, Right.
DJ Envy
Oh, damn. She'll get married one day. Hello?
Charlamagne Tha God
Who's this?
DJ Envy
Hopefully. Hello?
Caller/Listener
Hi, Dr. Equation.
DJ Envy
Hey, good morning. How you feeling this morning?
Caller/Listener
I'm feeling good. I'm load on the railroad is shut down, but I'm on this highway.
DJ Envy
Okay. How long does it take you to get to work? They saying you got to take a bus or you got to drive.
Caller/Listener
Well, I have to drive to Queens. It's an hour and 15 minutes. But today I have to go to Wall street because then I have to get on the train and go another hour to get to Wall Street.
DJ Envy
They said Citi Field is. The parking is $6 today. That's. That's what I heard earlier. So I don't know if that's. That's true.
Jess Alaris
Well, that's good.
Lauren LaRosa
If so.
Caller/Listener
Oh, I don't know. I'm just trying to get to my meeting.
DJ Envy
I ain't mad at you. Well, talk to us about crime, mama.
Caller/Listener
Okay, so, first of all, I think that today the decisions that parents are making are just irresponsible. I think that the money that's being spent in May of the same children that are crying in August when they try to go to college and they can't pay that full tuition bill. These are the same parents that tell you, oh, they don't have the money to start a family. 529 camp for their children, and they're taking $8,000 to spend on a prom when their money could have been working for them and their child could have a better education. Our priorities aren't straight, period.
DJ Envy
I. I will say this. I. I do think it's a lot of money. And, you know, I always encourage even. Even my kids when they turn certain age. Sweet 16, like, Madison didn't have a sweet 16. Right. And I encourage them, you might as well. Let's go on a trip. Let's have an experience. Something that you can look back in life and say, I went here. I went there. I went to South Africa for the first time. I went to where just to have those. Those. Those experiences over a party. And she chose the. The trip, which I was happy about. But, you know, like Charlemagne said, you can't tell people what to do with that money. But I do think it's a lot.
Charlamagne Tha God
Well, that's what I'm saying. Neither one of y' all are wrong. But you're assuming, you know, people's financial situation. You know what I'm saying? Now, if you don't have it and you're doing all. All of this, yes, I think it's too much. But if you act in your wage and you. You got it to spin, I. I don't care.
Jess Alaris
Yeah, I think it was more so when I saw, like, the con. I went through the comments, and I'm seeing parents, like, oh, they were saying that their kids, some of their kids didn't want to go because they couldn't compete with something like that. And they, you know, they didn't want to look beneath anybody. Or they, you know, just feel like they didn't fit in because they ain't got all the money in the bread. They ain't pulling up in Rolls Royces and stuff.
Charlamagne Tha God
You can't even hit them with the reason for the season. It ain't like Christmas. You know what I'm saying? What does the prom got to do with anything? Remember the reason for the season. What's the reason for the goddamn season?
Jess Alaris
To show up and show up.
DJ Envy
But you're right. A lot of parents, especially moms, will be in my DMs, asking, Can they use a car for prom. And we did it a couple of times last year. I wouldn't do it again. Cause if somebody gets into an accident, it's a liability. Yes, Right. But we did it a couple of years ago just to help out. Cause like you said, a lot of people, like, yo, I can't afford it. I don't have it. My whole class, class is doing this, and my daughter can't. And you want to help out as much as possible, so I do get that as well.
Lauren LaRosa
But.
DJ Envy
800-585-1051. It's prom season. I mean, Jess has been showing me pictures online, and it's a lot people are just. I mean, renting cars, mansions. I mean, the floral arrangements look like a wedding. If you're just joining us, we're talking about his prom season, right? And Jess has been showing me behind the scenes all these different proms and kids about to head to prom. And these parents spending so much damn money. I'm talking about 10,000 thousand, 20,000, 30,000 on prom season.
Charlamagne Tha God
Damn. Is that too much, by the way? I'm assuming if you spending that type of money, you have it to spend.
Jess Alaris
Yeah. And then you also made me think about it, too. Like, yeah, these kids are working. We got a lot of influence. A lot of them are influences. They. They actually do make money on tick tock and YouTube and a gram. So I ain't even think about that.
DJ Envy
A lot of them are using affirm, too, but.
Charlamagne Tha God
Hello?
DJ Envy
Who's this?
Caller/Listener
Yeah, yo, what's good?
This is.
Charlamagne Tha God
This is Odds from Lumberton, North Carolina.
DJ Envy
Alex. What's up, brother?
Charlamagne Tha God
Y' all just want to call in about the. About the prom situation, right?
DJ Envy
Yes, sir.
Charlamagne Tha God
How you do anything is like, how you do anything is how you do everything, right? Our people. Our people Worry about the IRS.
Caller/Listener
Other people are worried about IRAs, right?
Charlamagne Tha God
So our people are spending 3, 500 on a dress.
Caller/Listener
3, 500 to rent a whip and
Charlamagne Tha God
then go back to the peas. But you got European Americans who kids go to the prom and a Honda Accord and go to the parents beach house out afterwards there's levels. Hey, can I say something? You know, that was my, that was my daily affirmation today. And I don't know, I can't remember if it was the Daily Stoic. It might have been the Daily Stoic or my, my, my other affirmation book. But how you do anything is how you do everything. I think it was in the Daily Story.
Jess Alaris
Wow.
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, and that's fact. That's facts, brother. Like, you know what I mean? Like these kids don't know nothing about high yield stocks or anything like that. But we worried about a $3,500 customized Dr. Come on man, we're living backwards.
DJ Envy
Thank you brother.
Charlamagne Tha God
But I, I just want to say again, we just assuming that we talking about broke people. I, I don't know. I don't know if these people are doing this beyond their means. I, I don't, I don't know. I don't know these people financial situation. Now if you are doing it behind you beyond your means. Yes, this applies to you.
Caller/Listener
Hello?
DJ Envy
Who's this?
Caller/Listener
Good morning, it's Jasmine from Detroit.
DJ Envy
Hey, what up doe? Talk to us, mama.
Caller/Listener
What up though?
Charlamagne Tha God
Peace.
Caller/Listener
So I think that social media definitely has an influence on the send off that people are having. And I do feel bad when they're children and feel like they don't want to go, but I don't think it's anything wrong with people having these big send offs.
Jess Alaris
Right.
Caller/Listener
It's part of our culture. It's what we do. We don't judge the Jews when they have, excuse me, when they have bar Mitzvah for their children when they turn 13. So I don't think there's anything wrong with it. It's our celebration. It's a one time thing. It's okay.
DJ Envy
Okay.
Jess Alaris
Yeah.
DJ Envy
That's a good way to look at it. Thank you.
Charlamagne Tha God
Mama also too, man, y' all keep talking about when we was younger, like proms wasn't about money or anything. When we was younger, you want you get you a nice suit, a nice dress, tuxedo.
DJ Envy
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
And a nice vehicle to take you there. And, and back then the vehicle could have been your mama car, you know what I mean?
DJ Envy
Right now we all chipped in and got a limo though. We all chipped in. Like I said, it was eight of us. So we all put in our. Probably about 100 each, 20 each. And we all Got a limo. It wasn't.
Jess Alaris
Yeah.
DJ Envy
It wasn't a.
Jess Alaris
About who could outdo the other person. The next person. Yeah.
DJ Envy
Nah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Hello?
DJ Envy
Who's this?
Caller/Listener
Hey, good morning. This is Dee from Jersey.
DJ Envy
Hey, what's going on? Good morning.
Caller/Listener
Morning. Morning. I wanted to call in to talk about the prom subject.
DJ Envy
Talk to us.
Caller/Listener
All right. So I think that they're absolutely doing way too much with the proms.
Charlamagne Tha God
Now.
Caller/Listener
I remember from my prom, I had a group of us, we all pitched in, we got a party bus, and we went to prom on a party bus. The party bus was then the after party. After prom.
Charlamagne Tha God
Prom. That's dope.
DJ Envy
Did y' all go to the show after? Because usually everybody in Jersey goes to New Jersey.
Caller/Listener
Sure, Absolutely. Prom weekend. We had a time, boy.
DJ Envy
Oh, you had sex that weekend too.
Charlamagne Tha God
Damn. That's not. I know. I know that. That is something she said.
DJ Envy
Whom you heard, you heard it.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's something that. That I'm hearing about. I have been hearing about that.
Jess Alaris
The party bus situation.
Charlamagne Tha God
Not going to the show for prom week. Okay.
Caller/Listener
Yeah, yeah. That's a big thing in Jersey. Everybody does prom weekend down the shore. You rent a house and then you and your crew got the house for the weekend.
DJ Envy
Yep. I ain't let my daughter go
Charlamagne Tha God
to.
DJ Envy
To the shore.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
DJ Envy
Nah.
Jess Alaris
Damn.
DJ Envy
Thank you, mama.
Caller/Listener
No problem. One more thing. I did see online, they said that one of the reasons why the parents is going so hard with the kids is because they low key know that. That this is the only time that their daughter will be closest to marriage.
Jess Alaris
This is crazy. I'm not saying that. You're the third person that said that to us today.
Caller/Listener
Yup. That's what they were saying online. That moms is going so hard because they don't really think their daughter ever really make it to a wedding. So this is like the wedding for them.
Charlamagne Tha God
You got to tell these old holes, stop projecting. God damn. You never got married don't mean your job is not going to get married. Like, cut it out.
Jess Alaris
Yeah, I want to hear that from a moment. From a mom who feel that way. That's crazy.
DJ Envy
You too now. All right, well, what's the moral of the story? If there's a moral?
Charlamagne Tha God
For me, it's everybody act your ways. Do what you can afford to do. Like, that's it. Like, you know what I mean? Like, if you. If you can't afford this huge prom send off, then don't do it. But I do like the idea that everybody keeps talking about yo, unity and group operation. Yeah, go get Four or five of your friends put something together. Go get a party bus.
DJ Envy
Get a party bus. Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
And have a good, good time.
Lamorne Morris
You know what I mean?
Jess Alaris
I don't think that kids should be discouraged by seeing what their peers are doing. It's not really about that. You know what I'm saying? Don't let that discourage you so much that you don't go enjoy this once in a lifetime celebration. I promise to celebrate.
DJ Envy
You know that's right.
Charlamagne Tha God
And also your friends. Don't you think the school, the school should be the ones that's like really spending some money to make sure that these kids got a dope ass party?
Jess Alaris
Hell yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Like go book a fire dude DJ for the kids, you know, I mean, make sure, make sure the party looks extravagant.
Jess Alaris
Right?
Charlamagne Tha God
Like the school should be doing that for the kids. Like it shouldn't be up to the kids to create these luxurious experiences before they're leaving. Like they should be going to a luxurious experience.
Jess Alaris
That's true. Because we never, we always see the send offs. We'll never see what the problem is.
DJ Envy
Like, yeah, my mom would drive it. My mom and dad would drive at everybody's house. Could just take pictures of everybody else because you know, the limo. Pick one person up to the next person and that was a good time. But anyway, we got the latest with Lauren coming up, so don't move. It's the Breakfast Club. Good morning. Streaming May 22nd on Paramount. Plus the acclaimed series from executive producer Lena Waithe reaches its final chapter. The Shy. For seven seasons, these stories, these streets, this community have stayed with us. Now it all leads to this. As friendships are tested, families evolve, and secrets refuse to stay buried. One thing is certain. The shy is more than just a series. It's a legacy. Don't miss the final season. May 26th. Second on a Paramount plus premium plan.
Caller/Listener
This past weekend, like every other Sunday, you were on the court with the guys, playing ball. Just a quick pickup game, living out your hoop dreams. No triple doubles, but mean set of threes in between buckets. One of the homies mentioned he calls on a new crib. This is big. And while everyone's asking about housewarming and making plans to celebrate, you're asking the real questions. Like, has he spoken to his State Farm agent yet about coverage? See, homeownership is one thing, but the right coverage is the real game changer. Even more than your last hot streak, it's how you protect your legacy. Dropping buckets and bars on the court. A State Farm agent can more than assist you with finding the right coverage for your new place. If you have a claim, your local agent can help you file it. Yup, that's right. Over the phone, in person, online or on the app, they are ready to help you and they don't drop the box. You know what I mean? Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.
Lauren LaRosa
Okay, so quick behind the scenes moment about my business because people always ask me like, how do I actually run everything? So Shopify is literally the platform where I turned this tiny idea into a business. Before this I was really just like popping up at any in person event, any vending opportunity I could, which I still do. But I wasn't really as focused online. I was like, you know, the websites are going to be too much to build out. I'm not like a super techie person, even though I can make things cute. And I didn't want to put up a website that would run my customers away. I wanted it to be efficient, to be easy. And Shopify helped me build brown girlgrinding.com out. Once I switched to Shopify, it finally clicked like, okay, I can actually do this. It's not about it being tough, it's about using the right platform to make it easy. Shopify takes all of the guesswork out. I build my own store, I manage my community, own my own customer relationships. Plus this is my favorite thing. Shopify gets my products everywhere. I'm able to link stuff through Google, YouTube, TikTok, Shop the Shop app, even ChatGPT and Instagram, which is very important for me. And Shopify's AI co founder sidekick, game changer, let me tell y'. All. Right, so it's helped me not only optimize my site, it helps me look at my sales trends, it updates my product skills. All the stuff I'm absolutely not an expert in, but it's like having a genius business partner that never sleeps. And right now the Bronco grinding storefront and the Black Effect storefront is busy and Shopify is handling all of the heavy lifting. I love that for us. I am pumped, like so pumped that Shopify is going to show up at the Black Effect Podcast festival this year in a big way. And I will be there preaching this platform to all of the small black owned businesses that partner with us. So if you've been sitting on an idea or if you're ready to scale, which you've already started, started, this is your sign. Go to shopify.com Ben if I can do it, you can do it too.
Charlamagne Tha God
Amazon Health AI presents Painful Thoughts I
Lauren LaRosa
I Can't stop scratching my downtown.
Jess Alaris
Yeah, but I'm not itching to go downtown and tell a receptionist I'm here to talk about my downtown. Some things you'd rather type than say out loud.
Lamorne Morris
There's no question too embarrassing for Amazon Health.
Charlamagne Tha God
AI chat your symptoms and get virtual care 24.
Lamorne Morris
7 Healthcare just got less painful.
DJ Envy
She gets them from somebody that knows somebody.
Lauren LaRosa
I'm the homegirl that knows a little bit about everything.
Charlamagne Tha God
She'd be having the latest on the latest with Lauren. Love, Rosa. Sometimes you have facts, sometimes you have details. Sometimes you have a little bit everything. Well, it's the latest brought to you by Top Dog Law on the Breakfast Club.
Lauren LaRosa
So young Dolph's trial, you know, for his shooting death has finally come to an end. Some five years since his murder took place. So Cornelius Smith Jr. Agreed to a plea deal last Friday. On Friday. And this plea deal will now mean that he'll receive 20 years in prison. Prison in exchange, if you guys remember, after the shooting of young Dolph, there were two. There were three men. But there were two men that were in question for this shooting. There was a Julius Johnson and then Cornelius Smith Jr. And now Cornelius has been sentenced. So this marks the conclusion of the trial when it comes to young Dolph. And I saw his wife speak out and basically say, you know, that they deserve to get everything that comes with the years that they will be serving.
Charlamagne Tha God
Absolutely.
Lauren LaRosa
And, you know, praying for some closure for her in this situation.
DJ Envy
You said how much son got 20 years.
Lauren LaRosa
So this is just for Cornelius Smith Jr. He agreed to a plea deal on Friday that will give him now he'll receive a 20 year prison sentence. In exchange, he pled guilty to second degree murder for the shooting death of
Charlamagne Tha God
young Dolph in court doesn't bring Dolph back. And, you know, I hate when you call things like that justice because, you know, nothing can ever bring. Bring Dolph back. Right.
Lauren LaRosa
Like.
Charlamagne Tha God
Like that's. But, you know, I'm glad that he's getting that time.
Lauren LaRosa
Right.
DJ Envy
Yeah, I feel like it.
Jess Alaris
If.
DJ Envy
Feel like it should be more than that. 20 years still gives him time to come out. Right. How old is he? 40 years old.
Lauren LaRosa
I don't even think he's that old.
DJ Envy
30 years old.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah.
DJ Envy
I mean, look, that's something that's grieving that family would have to deal with forever. Those kids will never see their dad again.
Lauren LaRosa
True. And his wife will never be able to see her person or raise her children with their father as well, too. But, yeah, that's the time that he was given. She said, may God have his entire way with him and every coward involved. 20 years plus time served will never be enough. So yes. Now in other news. So comedian Reggie Carroll, this happened some time ago. He was shot at the age of 52 back in August of last year. Now the man in question for the shooting is a man named Tranelle Williams who is a longtime security guard for Cat Williams. And he was just indicted at the end of last week for this shooting and he's been indicted for first degree murder. Now this, it has been like a whole back and forth. So for background on this conversation, the two were roommates at the time. Reggie Carroll was a comedian who was on tour with Cat Williams at one point. He was also.
Jess Alaris
Baltimore too.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, from Baltimore. He was also opening for Monique at some time as well. But Tranel says that after he was taken off a Cat Williams tour, he then moved out of the mansion that Cat Williams had, I guess that a bunch of the comedians were sharing and they moved in the house together. Together. This house is leased by a company that Cat Williams owns and that's where the shooting went down. Now Tranel is alleging that this was all in self defense. He has been speaking out to various outlets. He talked to wreg and he talks about, you know, he alleges that there were guns pulled on him multiple times during the three months that they lived together, that he had been threatened with the weapon and he had posted some footage as well too, where. But this wasn't from the night of the incident. It was from a previous incident because he said he's ran from this man about 10 times. Times where you see them in a back and forth exchange and you do see a gun on Reggie Reginald Carroll's hip. But yeah, so now he's going to go back and forth in court and he's actually saying he's ex. Not excited, but he was looking forward to the indictment because he thinks that it'll clear him because he'll be able to prove self defense because hopefully they'll be able to subpoena certain things and he's asking for them to subpoena like drug records and stuff like that to try and prove that what he is saying.
Jess Alaris
Yeah, that's crazy.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah.
Jess Alaris
Rest in peace to Reggie Kirk girl. That that actually was somebody who had. I, I did comedy with him in a. On a few shows up and coming. Yeah, hell yeah. He was funny as hell.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, yeah. Very tragic incident. Very sad incident.
Charlamagne Tha God
Can you do some positive news?
Lauren LaRosa
Yes, we're Gonna pick up that. We gonna pick up the. The energy.
Charlamagne Tha God
The sentencing of Dolph's murderer was positive,
Lauren LaRosa
but, you know, positive, but it can still. I get what you're saying. So we're gonna pick up the energy a bit. We were talking a lot about Kevin Hart's roast, and now one of the biggest, biggest convos or one of the biggest comedians from the night who caused a lot of conversation, Ms. Cheryl Underwood has announced that following the Netflix roast, she will now be having a comedy special produced by Kevin Hart that will be dropping on Netflix in 2027.
Charlamagne Tha God
Dropping the clues Bombs for Cheryl Underwood. Dammit.
Lamorne Morris
That's what I'm talking about.
Charlamagne Tha God
And she got that because of the roast?
Lauren LaRosa
Yes. Yep. She says that this is a conversation that they directly had with her immediately following the roast. And she sent it a message to, you know, comedians. She says those acts who think that their time has passed, it has not. Your dream doesn't die for somebody else's dream to live. All those old school comments that think, I'm never going to get the shot. Let's develop a process where new comics and old comics can get their shot. Netflix is the key now. So she's going to be, you know, working with them to bring her.
Charlamagne Tha God
And she signed the CAA as well.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, like, all of that.
Charlamagne Tha God
All of that because of the rose. I was told that, like, after the roast, in the after party that night, they cornered her, like, nope, we gotta get this done now.
Jess Alaris
She was also one of the. She was the only standup comedian other than Katt Williams that night to receive a standing ovation. Cause she went off prompter. She came back, clapped back at all the men in the room who was coming at her, like, she the best. And then also she got a book that she's writing as well. Yeah, it's called I'm Fat because of youf.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm Fat because of youf.
Jess Alaris
Yeah.
Lauren LaRosa
Congratulations.
Jess Alaris
Congratulations, Aunt Cheryl.
Lauren LaRosa
Yeah, that's right.
DJ Envy
And as the latest. What's that?
Charlamagne Tha God
Brought to you by?
Lauren LaRosa
The latest is brought to you by Top Dog Law. Any accident, big or small, call Top Dog Law.
DJ Envy
Okay. All right, now I want to salute OVO Eli. OVO Eli. He went out to Toronto to Drake's listening party, and. And I asked him, well, what are the biggest records? So he told me some of the dopest records that I should be playing at outside.
Charlamagne Tha God
So he didn't answer his phone all weekend. He was somewhere covered in frozen semen. He was into rock. What Eli? Where Eli at? Eli. What Eli?
Jess Alaris
Eli, come in. Here, tell us he didn't post a
Charlamagne Tha God
picture of him covered in frozen se heard.
Lauren LaRosa
He heard the Al call. Why Drake didn't give you one of his chains?
Charlamagne Tha God
Eli went to the six out here in New York. If I had a change.
DJ Envy
Yeah, exactly. That was the six.
Charlamagne Tha God
It was insane. Eli got bonus. That's okay. Amazing. Exceeded my expectations, man. Shout out Drizzy Drake. Shout out the whole OVO crew.
DJ Envy
Did you meet Drake?
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, I did.
Jess Alaris
Oh, my God.
DJ Envy
What happened?
Charlamagne Tha God
Real quick. No, so I'm by the DJ booth. Shout out OVO Noel, OVO Mark. I'm there with Tez, of course. Yo, shout out DJ Nala Simone too. For real. I'm forever grateful, yo, but now I'm. I'm by the DJ booth. I see Drake. Oh, my gosh. I mean, I'm like, oh, crap. He comes up to me, bricked up. You got bricked up? I said, what up To Drake? And then Tez tells him, yo, that's OVO Eli. And I guess he knows me from the streaming.
Lamorne Morris
So he's like, oh,
Lauren LaRosa
it be two of us on there. The other person be me and it be me and Drake.
Charlamagne Tha God
He knows it from the show.
DJ Envy
He knows it from the show. From the.
Charlamagne Tha God
He's like the Eli's post up here in New York, you know, love, but no.
DJ Envy
So he said, yo, that's OVO elite.
Charlamagne Tha God
Embrace me, man. Show love. We got a picture from a photographer. I need that pic, but I don't got it yet. But where's the pick of you? Covered in Frozen scene.
DJ Envy
All right.
Jess Alaris
Congratulations.
Charlamagne Tha God
Congratulations. Congratulations. But no, he's got a picture of him covered in frozen. It said Iceman came.
Caller/Listener
