Charlamagne Tha God
Every day I wake up. Wake your ass up. The Breakfast Club.
DJ Envy
Morning, everybody. It's DJ Envy. Jess. Hilarious. Charlemagne, the guy. We are the Breakfast Club. Lola Rose is here as well. We got a special guest in the building.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yes, indeed, Jess.
DJ Envy
This is our fake workout partner, Ladies and gentlemen, Angela Simmons is here. Angela's the only person I know. Comes in the gym with heels on talking about, can I work? Can I ride the bike with heels on?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
It was that day. It was just that day. But I go to the real gym, so, like, that's like a part of it. The healing process.
Angela Simmons
He said the real job.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
No, no, no. I'm saying, like, you get it. Like, you're not really sweating in there.
Charlamagne Tha God
Why you coming to gym with heels? What are you training for?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I was going somewhere else after, so I just. You can go there in your heels, right?
Charlamagne Tha God
Oh, you going to change clothes? Okay. He made it sound like you bought the.
DJ Envy
No, she worked out in her heels. Damn it. There was no.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I did that day, to be fair. They were, like, short heels and they were gray and they had, like, fur. It's. It was okay.
DJ Envy
And they were furry ass heels, but
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I had on sweats with it, so it's fair.
Charlamagne Tha God
You never know when you gotta fight. You might have to fight.
DJ Envy
Well, welcome.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Thank you.
DJ Envy
How you feeling?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I'm great.
DJ Envy
So you. You're You. You became an artist now singing, period?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Well, no, not singing. Not quite that rapping. Spoken word, spoken word.
Angela Rye
So that's you speaking and so that's not you singing?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
That's not me singing.
Charlamagne Tha God
Boy, I'm stupid. I thought that was you singing.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
That is someone named. Yeah. Okay. She's singing on it.
Angela Rye
Okay. Because it sounded like Saraya at first. And one of the producers was like, it's giving Empire Saraya.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
But.
Angela Rye
But then I was like, no, no, no, no, no. That has to be you. And then I literally said, yes, you said that. What if she not singing and she just doing the spoken word part and you're literally just doing the spoken word part. Okay. How did you come about doing that and hopping on a song with it?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
So I went into the studio and Q, who's in the room? Q? Yeah. He kind of convinced me. And then, like, I started just working on a bunch of different songs and I winded up doing this song with Corte Hitmaker and signed with Ruff Riders for this single. So putting it out. And. Yeah, I just creatively sat in the Studio and did it literally.
Charlamagne Tha God
I mean, you come from. Of course, you know, you're everyone's daughter, JoJo's sister. They never inspired you to get in the studio?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I never wanted to do. I didn't. I wasn't thinking about it. But I do love music because music is, like, everything. I use it to do everything. And so I just felt the creative bug and I went in the studio. I started this, like, two years ago, the process. So I have a couple of different ones, but this one I felt like I really felt led to put out.
Charlamagne Tha God
Never, like, even Russell Simmons is your uncle. And you never felt like going in
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
the studio ever, not singing, rapping, shied away from it. I shied away from it. Just wasn't like. I just like, nah, let me not. Let me let them have it. That's what I was thinking.
DJ Envy
So you doing a whole project or just you going to.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I was going to do a whole project for sure.
Angela Rye
And is it going to be strictly spoken word, or are you going to have other artists?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
So it's a mix. Other artists. It's really about, like, I started off doing it because of, like, meditation and healing and stuff. So, like, meditation stuff and just things that inspire and uplift and. And then, like, I got further and further in, and I'm like, jada's on this with me. Like, I'm really doing it now. You know what I mean? Like, so it's gonna be a mix. Definitely. The project's gonna be a mix of different artists and myself.
Angela Simmons
You said you felt led to put this one out. And I know in the song, it's talking about being in a maze and figuring things out. And we've watched you go through various things over the years. Why now did you think that the spirit led you here? Like, is there a sense of healing that you had?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I would say timing and alignment. It was right timing for me. Like I said, I've been working on it for a while, so. And it just. All of the pieces started coming together like Rough Riders coming and being a part of it. Me finally ready to just put the music out there. And it was timing for me.
Charlamagne Tha God
It is interesting because, you know, with somebody with your last name, you get into the music industry, people automatically think legacy. Did growing up around music make this feel inevitable, or did it make you hesitate because of expectations?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I feel like at first, I definitely, because of expectations, wouldn't have touched music at all. But I'm so creative that I can't help myself. You know what I mean? Like, I was like, I'mma do it, and this is what I'm gonna give. And I think it's dope. I love it. So what do y' all think of it?
Charlamagne Tha God
I thought it was dope.
DJ Envy
I gotta listen to it again now.
Angela Rye
To me, it sounds like a theme song to, like, a drama series, like something 50 would put on power or one of those.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I like that. I do.
Angela Rye
I really see that for it.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Thank you. Thank you.
Charlamagne Tha God
In my mind, I was like, this ain't Angela singer. Cause I was like. I'm like, she sings, she sound this good, and she ain't never sang ever in life.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
She dripping. She ain't been in the studio, not singing.
Charlamagne Tha God
Now it's not you. So that's what I said.
DJ Envy
I gotta listen to it again?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
No, no, no.
Charlamagne Tha God
I just gotta hear it again.
DJ Envy
I gotta re.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Listen to you.
Charlamagne Tha God
Right?
Angela Simmons
I'm like, dang, let that.
Angela Rye
I listened to all of it, Everything from the artist, your part, and Jada. I thought it flowed. Great.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Thank you.
Angela Rye
Yeah.
DJ Envy
What's your pop sing?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
He likes it. Yeah, he's happy for me.
DJ Envy
Did he know you were doing it, or was it one of those things like, dad, play this while we're in the car?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
It was one of those things where I just called him the next day. I was like. I was in the studio. He's, like, working. What? You know what I mean? But I sent to him, and he's super supportive. He loves it. He loves Jada on it. He likes the video. You guys probably haven't seen the video yet. That's gonna drop. Yeah, we did a video. So we did the whole thing. Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Some people say Angela Simmons is already successful. So why music? Is it about passion, expression, proving something to yourself?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Passion, expression, creativity. Just doing what I want to do and not letting people put me in a box. You know what I mean? Like, I do what I want because I want to do it, not because I'm supposed to do things a certain way. So for me, it's like, I'm just doing me.
DJ Envy
So what do you enjoy doing? Because we've seen the Angela's cakes. We've seen this, and that's still.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
That's still live and active, the music.
DJ Envy
So what do you enjoy to do the most? Was it just entrepreneurship?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
All of it? Like, I think that's the thing about being an entrepreneur is, like, a lot of times people tell you, you can only do one thing, and I'm like, yo, that's hard for me because, like, I do multiple things, just naturally wake up, work out. I'm in wellness. What can I do about it? That's my real life, you know what I'm saying? So I think it's just being creative and being able to be a creator. Like, I'm a creator. That's just what I do.
Angela Simmons
What things? What lessons that you've learned all these years in business are you bringing into, like, Angela Simmons, the artist?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Well, it's Angela Renee. That's my name as an artist. Right. But as an artist is just, like, letting myself flow and be whatever that is. Like, I don't think there's no cap on how I can do this thing. And I do feel like it's a different lane that I haven't seen out there. Like, I'm mixing myself with other artists, and then I'm coming in and doing, like, a spoken word part, which I have not seen done. Like, I've never heard anything like what I'm putting out, you know, as far as how unique it is. So, yeah, just allowing myself to flow in that and be who I am. I love spoken word, man. Like, I started the music stuff, like, two years ago. So, like, I've been in the studio, and I have just started working on multiple different sounds because for me, I like so many different things in music. You know what I mean? It's not like I don't like just one genre, so I was like, I want to hear different stuff. And I was inspired by so many people, like Jhene Aiko, and I was listening to these different artists every day, like, for inspire, inspiration, and healing. And I was like, it did something for me. Like, that was like, the first thing I was listening to in the morning. I'm like, I should do my own thing. And then I just got, like, further and further in it.
Charlamagne Tha God
So who's the part used to be so big in the culture, like, because of things like Def Poetry Jam, you know what I mean? But also cause of movies like Love Jones. I wonder why we got away from that.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yeah, yeah, that's true.
Angela Rye
Have you ever done it live?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
No, but I will. I'm ready.
Angela Rye
Yeah.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yeah, for sure.
DJ Envy
I was gonna ask you, when you came up with the concept, who was the first person you told? What were their thoughts? You'd be like, let's do a spoken word on a record with a singer and a rapper.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Like, I didn't even know what I was doing. I just went in the studio corte q and I started in New York, and then, like, for like a week, I was just going to New York.
DJ Envy
New what?
Angela Rye
New York.
DJ Envy
Oh, My goodness.
Angela Rye
That accident, that's like.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
That was upstate.
Angela Rye
Ain't that upstate Boston or some shit?
DJ Envy
That's out of Boston and Memphis together? Yeah.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
All of a sudden, I don't know.
DJ Envy
I was like, where did that come from? I'm sorry. Go ahead.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
In New York? Yeah, New York.
Angela Rye
So, Yeah, I don't hear no Memphis no more.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yeah, I mean, you know. Oh, hello. Well, anyway, so I was in New York, and so we went in the studio, and there was just, like, different beats, and I got to sit there and, like, just play with them. Like, I went in the booth, and I didn't write anything down. I was thinking I was gonna write, and it just flowed straight up out my head, whatever I was thinking. And I did that for multiple days, and then I just kept going with it, so.
DJ Envy
And when did Jadakiss get on there?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
He got on it maybe, like, at least 12 months ago. Set with Hitmaker, and then Hitmaker hit Jada, and Jada jumped on in, like, less than a week.
Angela Simmons
So did he just hear what you had already done?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yeah.
Angela Simmons
Okay.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yeah.
Angela Simmons
Okay.
Angela Rye
I think you should do a spoken word tour, because, like, Charlotte said, we got away from it, and I feel like a live event like that, that's so intimate. That's so, like, that's the connection with people. Like, you know, that's why I asked. Have you ever done it live?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Because I want to.
Angela Rye
Spoken word event.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Oh, I want to. I already have some big plans for how I even want to roll this out going forward. I just love live music. I love music. I love the culture. Even, like, the. The young lady, Reza, who's on it, like, having her part of it, her voice is incredible. I was like, let's leave you on this. You know what I mean? Like, I think it's dope. You're already dope on it. She's a writer, so, like, I just. I love using my platform for stuff like that.
Annabe Sofa Ad
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
How do you prepare yourself for the criticism that might come with, you know,
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
now, you know, I don't. I just don't care about criticism. I am so used to public opinion, and I've been around it so long that I don't care. It's like, they're gonna have their opinion about me regardless. Good, bad, ugly. You know what I mean? I feel like I am who I am, so it's like, I don't really care. I'm ready for whatever.
DJ Envy
How'd the Rough Riders thing come about?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
That's like family, and it's like it just naturally flowed, like, Wise like family and rough Riders, you know, my family history with them and the legacy behind that. So it's kind of like naturally just flowed. Like I already started working on my project independently and I went to them and talked to them and we just kind of came together and that's what we do. That's how we got to the single deal.
Charlamagne Tha God
What do you want people to learn about you that they don't already know from the music? What story can you tell with the spoken word that you haven't told already?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I just think more of more depth of who I am, you know what I mean? Seeing me on a different creative level outside of just like what has been seen, I feel like they'll see just more of me. Like the people that I do know, the interactions I do have with these people sit down, have these different connections and mixing sounds and just doing something that's different. But, you know, that's what I'm hoping they'll get from it.
Angela Simmons
Are you. Well, it seems like you're like in a really good place, like just energy wise. I feel like this song. Once you're out on that tour, are you ready to have the conversations with the women that come, that connect to being in that maze and trying to figure out so many different things because you've kind of healed from a lot of the things that you've been through.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Absolutely. I feel like that's one of my major things is doing stuff like this so that I can help people heal. You know what I mean? I think everyone's always at a different space in their life when it comes to healing. We're always healing. Everyone's always healing from something.
Charlamagne Tha God
So not linear.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yeah, it's like you got to heal. So like, I would love to have those conversations and I want people to heal and I want people to look themselves and you know, like in the song I'm saying look yourself in the mirror because how long can you run from yourself? You know what I mean? I feel like people run from themselves all the time, every day. And we find things to cover up for it. Whether that be a substance, whether that be love, whether that be. People find stuff all the time to run from the truth of themselves. So I'm definitely ready to have those conversations.
Charlamagne Tha God
So the success, the heartbreak, the motherhood, that's all going to be reflected in the spoken word.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Everything. I mean, wherever I'm at in my life, I think that's the good part about the booth is like an open diary. Whatever may come from there, that's what it's going to be, and then the collaboration with other artists and coming together, like, that's a whole different world.
Charlamagne Tha God
Is it therapeutic for you?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
It is. Okay. I would go in there, have my candles lit and maybe a glass of wine, you know what I mean? Like, I was like, I had my request. We got to have lights. A certain. I like dark and then the light. It's just. It's a whole thing, and I prefer to record in the evenings. Yeah, it's just, like a better thing for me.
Angela Simmons
Watching you on Angie Martinez a few. It was like, seven, eight months ago, and then hearing this song, I was like, I wonder if she's ever thought, like, their spoken word. But you know how people do. Not a podcast, but kind of like live conversations, too. Like, when I watched your Angie Martinez, I feel like I learned so much more about Angela Simmons. The adult versus the Angela Simmons. I used to watch online and just watch on television, and I think a lot of people, there's a disconnect sometimes there where they don't.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Huge, huge disconnect because they. Again, they seen me at 17 growing up on TV, so they're kind of stuck at 17. So even when I do grown things, it's like, foreign to everybody. Oh, you growing up, duh. Like, you missed about 20 years of my life, but you know what I'm saying? It's like, I think there's definitely a disconnect in knowing who I truly am, and I don't feel led to have to push it. It's like, if as long as I'm out there and y' all begin to see more of it, then you'll learn who Angela Renee is, and Angela Simmons is as different people.
Charlamagne Tha God
So you still feel like people are judging you based on who you were at 19 instead of who you are now?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
They do.
DJ Envy
Absolutely.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
They do.
DJ Envy
You still see it.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I can't put on swimsuits at all.
Angela Simmons
Yeah, I remember.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Oh, my God. Put on some clothes. I'd be like, this is ridiculous. If anyone else puts on a swimsuit or if anyone else, like. Like, even today, I have this on. The thongs out. That. That's risky for that. Like, risque, like, for. For people to see me like that, and I'm like, know how old I am? I have a whole child. Like, you kidding me?
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm not looking, but there's a thong out.
Angela Simmons
That's what I'm trying, you know, like, you know the girls with the jeans and you show the little, like, thong on the side.
Charlamagne Tha God
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Angela Rye
I Don't give an artist the reason
DJ Envy
you act like that even more. Yes. The reason you act like that is because we seen her at 17 and that's Rev's daughter. But. But regardless, it's even worse.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
People have things to say about it, so.
Angela Simmons
That's right. Keith said, show it off. Fire.
Charlamagne Tha God
You look good.
Angela Rye
Always look good to me.
DJ Envy
Look at me.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Myself by accident.
Charlamagne Tha God
That's different. But the look now is kind of crazy.
Angela Simmons
Well, it's like an outfit thing that
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
people do, but you gotta. You gotta try. You gotta do your thing.
Angela Simmons
But you have to carry a certain level of confidence.
Charlamagne Tha God
Don't get no ideas.
Angela Simmons
Shut up.
Charlamagne Tha God
I just want you to know that I don't know if.
DJ Envy
Ridiculous.
Charlamagne Tha God
I don't want you to be inspired.
Angela Simmons
Okay? Focus. Do you have to have a certain level of confidence to do and push through? Like, just. Even the way people critique what you wear, the fact that you're grown now or whatever, and meeting you. Not meeting, because I've met you before, but seeing you here today after watching all that online, it's like you are completely unfazed. You, like, pop up. Let me show you. Let me. Like. But is it always unfazed because your responses are so loud sometimes, like, I just don't care.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Simply, like, I really don't care what anyone has to say. Like, I. To me, like, if I'm straight in my world and everything's good, then why am I concerned about with anybody? The public or an audience has to say, as long as my son's straight, my family good, my friend's good, and I'm happy. Hey, y' all could talk all day.
Angela Simmons
Was it tough for you when you decided to talk about the split with Gotti? Cause that got a lot of conversation, too.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Um, I just had to, you know, I mean, I guess because we were public, you know, together. I understand. So people had conversations about it, but, no, not really. You know what I mean? I don't think there's nothing bad there. Love them to death. Like, so there's no problems. It's just, you know, publicly, when things happen and you are public figure and things happen, people are curious what happened. So, no, not tough at all.
DJ Envy
The funny thing is, when you walked in here, the first thing Jess said was like, yo, whatever happened to her sister? Where's her sister at?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Everyone always asks about my sister. She is in California. She's not tucked, but she's doing a lot. She just actually, my brother, Jojo.

Who has his podcast. And she just joined him, so now they're, like co hosts together. But she's into movies that are coming out. She stays in her own world, too. Yeah, I think that's just the thing. Like, sometimes you just don't see her as much because she's not, like, socially out everywhere.
Charlamagne Tha God
It's interesting because, like, a lot of influencers launch brands now, but y' all were doing it way before. It was, like, a trendy thing. You think people underestimated you and your sister's business mindset early on?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I think it had never been done again. Like, it was a new lane. Like, girls. Female, young girls putting out sneakers wasn't a thing. When you walked inside of Foot Locker and all these things, you weren't seeing the sneakers that we were putting out. And we were literally 17, 18, like, young, doing it. But they may have underestimated it until it, like, did what it did.
Charlamagne Tha God
What happened to the pastry line?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
It just.
Angela Rye
It.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
It ended.
Charlamagne Tha God
Y' all sold it or y'.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
All. No, we were working with another company, so it's licensed, and they. It's still. So they have its own thing, but it's not. We're not affiliated with it.
Charlamagne Tha God
Got you. Y' all built that up, too, though. I mean, had rappers rapping about it,
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
like, yeah, that's true. Yeah, we did build that up. That was a fun run.
Angela Rye
Did you purposely leave. Well, obviously, you purposely left Simmons off of Angela Renee. Is that because what the pressure is up that comes behind what people expect of you because you are Simmons, or.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
No. I just feel like Angela Renee is a different part of me. You know what I mean? Like, more deep, more different conversations than just what you see as Angela Simmons. Like, I'll be sharing more. It's a different part of me, and I feel like the two are separate. It's like Angela Simmons, the mom. Angela Simmons, entrepreneur. And then there's like, the creative artist Angela Renee. You know what I'm saying? So just a different part of me.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah.
Angela Simmons
Had your son heard you on the music?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
He did. He likes it. I actually told him I was going to radio. He said, do people listen to the radio anymore?
Charlamagne Tha God
Damn, that's 86% of the country.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I know.
Charlamagne Tha God
But over 200 million people. Yes.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
See, I said, they ask about you? He said, what? They be asking about me? I said. I said, he called me this morning he's like. Because he's just all about his business. He got like an art business. I didn't bought him a website. So I'm waiting for you to put enough art on it so we could put it up. He's like, I'm ready. I want my credit card. I'm like, bro, bank card. Bank card. How old is baby boy now? Nine.
Angela Rye
Nine. Nobody listen to radio.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
No. He asked me that, Khalil. Did he not? He said that was. He's so fast with his mouth. I was like, I'm getting. Because he was like on the phone getting ready for school, and I'm like. He's like. I was like, I have radio this morning. People still listen to radio. I said 86%. But the way he said it to me, I was like, little boy, is
Angela Rye
that the only person that can really, really hurt your feelings and humble you?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
He will. He can.
DJ Envy
Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
How did motherhood shift the way you see success?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Success, longevity. Like, what's the longevity and success, but also being a mother, it's like, you really don't want to miss so many moments. I think I've been really, like, honing in on that. Like, how can I sit 30 days straight, you know what I mean? Do my job from here and be here for him because of the rapid way he's growing, you know what I mean? So it's like, how do you have longevity but be present for your child, making the right decision. And for me, it's a solo dolo mission other than obviously my family, which are wonderful with him, but it's like I gotta always shift and figure out what city, state, what makes the most sense, like what schools, just longevity and figuring out what does the legacy look like for him later, you know what I mean? Coming from my dad to me, to my family in general, down to him, what's next for him and being that example for him.
DJ Envy
How do you protect him? Cause you talk about, you don't necessarily care about social media, but he's nine years old now. He's in school. I'm sure he sees the thing. So how do you protect him if you can.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
He don't have. I don't give him all access to all social media, even though he's very smart. And Google, look up everything. I protect him to my best ability, I think. He obviously is nine, so he knows how to look up stuff.
DJ Envy
But he's not on TikTok.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
No TikTok, no Instagram. He wants one, he wants a snap, he wants it all.
Charlamagne Tha God
I'm like, mama, Your mama on Instagram with a thong on.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yeah. He looks at me. He always got something to say, oh, you cut your hair. I'm like, what? Is that bad or good? Like, do you like it? He's always looking at me. Where are you going? Going? What time you getting back? He's on me. That's one thing about my son. Yeah. He's on my heels.
Angela Simmons
Does he understand, like, who mom is and, like, all that stuff? Like, does he.
Charlamagne Tha God
The whole family?
Angela Rye
Yeah.
Angela Simmons
Your family?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yeah. He's learning and has learned over the years, but not fully. Like, it's an interesting position because he's always around so much and he sees so much, I think slightly, but not really. Like, I don't know. I don't think yet.
Charlamagne Tha God
Could he even recognize his grandfather in a video?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Oh, no, no. He knows everything about Papa. Papa. Like, he knows Papa's big. He'd be like, oh, yeah, that's. You know, I show him everything. Christmas time, be like, look at these videos. You know this song. Who's this? You know what I mean? Like, he knows that his favorite artist is Kendrick lamardo. I mean, that's his playlist. Sj. He's funny. Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
How do you find the strength to keep evolving when your personal pain has been so public?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
It's the healing, it's the getting therapy. It's the keeping it real with yourself, which, to me, even in the music, that's the thing is, like, how do you keep it real self? Are you good? Are you not good? What are you doing for your mental health today? And that, to me, is like, why I'm so deep into, like, wellness and fitness and stuff. It's like, that keeps me sane. That's my me time. That's my getaway time. So just always checking back in with myself and making sure that I'm doing the things I need to do to make sure I'm well. And if I'm not, I'll step away from everything. I don't ever care about shutting down, you know? I mean, like, I shut everything down if I don't feel like I'm in a good space.
DJ Envy
Do you mind keeping your relationships public? Does that bother you? Because people are always in your business.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
It just depends if it makes sense for me and my partner. Like, and that's what we want to do, we can do it. But I don't mind being private and I don't mind being public. It's just about, like, if we solid, then we good. We don't have nothing else to worry about. That's the thing. But I do see a lot of times when people go public, their relationship goes bad. But, I mean, I dated publicly for almost three years. So, like, I don't ever think it's about the public more than it's about the home. Like, what's. What's happening at home is way more important than what's happening in public.
Charlamagne Tha God
I feel like dating while famous seems exhausting.
Angela Simmons
I was gonna say you didn't really have a choice either. Like, you. Well, in your last relationship, I don't know where you.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Oh, we had a choice. I think we. We put it out there, but.
Angela Simmons
And then he gotti rapped about you.
Charlamagne Tha God
It was called manifestation.
Angela Simmons
Yeah. Like, people were gonna follow your every track, Every single move you made. If y' all were even sitting in the same room, it was a story, like, you know what I mean? Like, before you guys came out. So that's what I mean by I don't know if you really had the choice.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I think we still had a choice. I think any relationship you want, you can make it private if you really want to. There's just a certain way to move.
Angela Simmons
What was the choice to make it public then? Like, why?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I mean, because we was with each other. If I'm with you every day, like, I'm with you, you gonna see me next to him. You know what I'm saying? Like, it's like, it's public.
Angela Rye
And I've been rapping about this girl, and I got her look, so I know that was, like, real big.
Charlamagne Tha God
And she sound like Glorilla now. So that was really confusing.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
It was like, please. Because now everyone is like, oh, you don't have the accent anymore. I'm like, bro, I think if you're around someone every day, you naturally just sound like they knew. You start looking like them, sounding like them, like it just becomes a thing. But I couldn't help it if I'm talking to someone every day with that accent. It's a heavy accent. It just. I wasn't trying. Like, I was literally flowing out my mouth. Like, me too.
Charlamagne Tha God
How do you protect your peace while still being open to love?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
By straying away if it seemed like it's not about to be peaceful. Like, to me, like, I think if you start talking to someone and it seems like it's gonna be a little chaos, or they got too much going on and they're not, like, really, like, working on themselves. I gotta hit the brakes. Like, you got that? If you're not ready, leave me alone. Cause I'm peaceful and I like what I got, you know what I mean? So I just stay away from it.
Charlamagne Tha God
I hear that from a lot of my homegirls. They be like, I can't even date a man if he's not doing the work on himself. Therapy, on some type of healing journey.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Like, how are you healing and fixing yourself? And then you come into a man's life and he's like, nah, I'm not interested, bruh. Like, if you're not gonna heal yourself, like, I don't want to be a part of that. You know? Like, I only want to evolve. So how can I be evolving and you just. You staying right there? That don't make sense.
Angela Simmons
When you were talking to Angie Martinez, you said that you and Gotti's breakup wasn't your choice, but it was necessary. Was that one of the reasons why? Like, was he not where you were healing wise?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Nah, I think that that has nothing to do with it. I think, you know, it was what it was. I have. I really care about him and his family, so I really don't talk too much about all that. But, no, I just. It was just. It just made sense at the time for what it was. You know what I'm saying?
Angela Simmons
So what about now? Like, would you do a very big public relationship now? Or would you, like, how are you walking that 99, get back together?
Angela Rye
I was gonna say, oh, that's what
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
y' all going with? Why you say that? But I like Lauren to ask those type questions now. You can see in the future.
Charlamagne Tha God
Yeah, yeah.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I mean.
Angela Simmons
Cause the act is still there a little bit. It's like, it go away, but then you bring it back.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
So I am open to my destiny. I don't speak on what I will or won't do, because then you be an idiot. You come back and see this, you'd be like, oh, I said never. Like, I never say never. I'm a never say never person, though. I learned that once I got pregnant. I said, I'm never saying never again. You just never say never. That's all you're not opposed to.
Charlamagne Tha God
And his mom still super cool.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I love his whole family. They're amazing. They're amazing family. They're really good people.
Charlamagne Tha God
I peeped at just being nosy on social media. Oh, Angela and the mom still cool. Okay.
Angela Simmons
You could tell by how you talk about the situation, though, that there's still a lot of love there.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I have high respect.
Angela Rye
She's not bitter or anything, but I don't.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I'm not even that person, though. Like, If I stop dealing with a person, I guarantee they don't have a problem with me. Because I'm not. I don't leave bitter. I don't care. I'm gonna go work on myself. Peace. And I leave in peace. Literally, like, I'm not that girl. And I never been and never will be. So.
Angela Rye
So you're not opposed to spending the block.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
God's destiny. I'm always open to what's destined for me.
Angela Rye
Okay.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
You know.
Angela Rye
Yeah.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
That's the political answer.
DJ Envy
Any other questions, Jess?
Angela Rye
No, I was just saying. Cause I usually like.
DJ Envy
She hit you like the lawyer. So back to my original question.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
If you. What's for me? The thing is, I just want what's for me.
Angela Rye
Absolutely.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
And you never know. You never know what? What? I can't kil. Can you speak for me?
DJ Envy
That's. See, that's a good friend. The friend is always the new love. I want the new love,
Angela Rye
but just new love and new life. So are you opposed to new love?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
No, I'm ready, cuz.
DJ Envy
She dating somebody.
Angela Rye
Come on, Jess.
Angela Simmons
All right.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Dating somebody. I. I'm dating. I'm. I'm dating.
Angela Rye
Okay.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Multiple means that I'm open to dates and I have taken dates. People know people. People getting to know you. Okay.
Angela Simmons
All right.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I like. I like love. So am I open to love and being in a relationship right now? Yeah.
Angela Rye
Gotcha.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
As long as they're not like holding me back or anything. Like, let me be me. Yeah, that's.
Angela Simmons
Why.
DJ Envy
Would you date another rapper?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
All right. Would you date another rapper again? You can't say no. Okay. I'm not necessarily looking necessarily for a rapper. I wasn't looking for a rapper when I winded up with a rapper. But we just wind them together. But I'm not opposed. I'm like very open. I would consider myself an open type of person, I think. Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Does it pique your interest when they mention you in songs?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
It's interesting, it's flattering, it's cute. As long if I like the song, I'm a rap it for sure.
Charlamagne Tha God
Google who it is. Let me see what he looked like.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yeah, I want to know that. That's important detail.
DJ Envy
What about if they put your name in a wax song? You listen to this all like, this song's trash. I don't know why they mentioned my name.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I don't know if I've been through that. Correct.
Charlamagne Tha God
Do you think real growth comes from pain?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Absolutely. You experiencing pain changes you as a person. You're never the same person. That's What I will say, like, after pain, a certain level of pain, you're. You're just a new person. Like, you're transforming. You're becoming a new person. After that, you look at life differently. It depends on the pain. Whether that be grief, whether that be a heartbreak. It changes you. It definitely makes you grow, though, and look at life in a different. In a different, like, way.
Charlamagne Tha God
What part of your healing journey do you think people don't see and do you even care to show them?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I don't think they see enough of, like, the motherhood part for me, because I think that's the part of life I didn't sign up for. Like, you don't sign up to be a parent alone. And so, like, that's constant every day, all day, being a parent. But, like, when you're doing it on a different. In a different way, without, like, a male, that's like, you always want to make sure you're doing the right things for especially a young man. You're like, okay, am I doing this right for you? Is this correct? So I would say when it comes to pain, like, those are the things people don't see. They don't see a lot of the things. Like, because, like, I've been through a lot and heartbreak. Okay, it's heartbreak. But, like, dealing with your child who's, like, constantly in daddy mode, and you don't have dad for him, that's grief. Like, that's, like, ongoing grief that you have to just deal with. So to me, that's like, a different level of, like, strength. And every day getting up like, okay, we're good. We're gonna do this. You know what I mean?
Angela Simmons
What is it like now? Cause he's nine, and y' all are having, like, such bigger conversations. Cause he has so much more questions.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Yes.
Angela Simmons
How is it dealing with your own grief, but also making sure he's kind of protected or healed from his.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
I mean, it's difficult. I'm dealing with his, and I deal with that to my best ability, and then I deal with mine. And, you know, like, the other day, for instance, he wrote me. He's like. I guess his grandfather told him that his dad had a Ford, like, big one of these big trucks. So he asked me for the pictures, and I'm like, where'd that come from? But he was like, oh, yeah, that's a dope truck. He just naturally had one in one of those large trucks with the wheels and all that stuff. But, like, just even hearing him asking these things is like. Like, you would have loved your dad. Like, y' all were so, like, similar, but, you know, it's just. That's a day by day thing.
Charlamagne Tha God
How did your faith help you through the grief?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Oh, prayer is everything for me. Like, I don't move without prayer. Me and my son, I'm like, check the Bible app. Did you pray? We pray at night. That's the one thing. He's still like, get in bed with me and pray with me before bed. You know what I mean? But my faith is what keeps me grounded and keeps me, like, here. Like, if I didn't have faith, you would be like, is God real? Like, how am I going through all this? And I'm still okay? But I'm definitely. My faith has grounded me and keeps me rooted and, like, together. Yeah.
Charlamagne Tha God
Has his father visited him from the other side? Has his father visited him from the other side?
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)
Dreams, Probably. Yeah. I mean, I feel like maybe essay in his dreams, he's. He's definitely, like you said, at the age where it's, like, way more interesting. My dad like this or like, you know, and his grandmother, his nana, she's always giving him different stuff. Little old cell phones he had or, like, clothes. Little pieces of him. So that helps, too.
Danielle Fishel (Nurture Life Ad)
Yeah.
DJ Envy
Well, let's get into the record. Let's play the record. I'm gonna let you introduce the record. You can introduce it to the world.
Angela Renee (Angela Simmons as artist)

Chelsea Handler
This is Chelsea Handler from Dear Chelsea after the Big Game like most people, I kept thinking about the commercials, and there was one that stayed with me. It was from the Blue Square Alliance Against Hate, and it wasn't loud or flashy. It showed a Jewish kid being targeted at school and another student who chose not to ignore it. As someone who was Jewish, that moment felt very real to me. Not dramatic, just familiar. And what struck me was how clearly it showed that hate doesn't always announce itself, but the impact is still huge. If you saw the Blue Square spot during the Big Game, it's worth thinking about. And if you want to show support, sharing the Blue Square is one small way to do that.
